A major twist has emerged in the s*xual assault case involving BJP leader Ashok Singh from Rampur Baghelan in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district. The woman who had earlier accused him of raping her at knifepoint and filming the act has now withdrawn her r*pe allegation.

On Saturday night, the complainant told the police that she was not r*ped but was molested and subjected to obscene remarks. Based on her revised statement, the police arrested Ashok Singh.

Sub-Inspector Preeti Kushwaha said the woman submitted a written application stating that her earlier r*pe complaint and allegations of threats were made in anger and fear. She clarified that the accused had molested her and made obscene gestures.

Following this, a case was registered against Ashok Singh under sections 74 (outraging the modesty of a woman), 75(2) (s*xual harassment), 79 (insult by word or gesture), 296(1) (obscene act), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the victim’s security has been ensured.

Earlier, on December 22, the woman had approached SP Hansraj Singh, alleging that Ashok Singh, a resident of Karhi whose wife is a councillor, had entered her house six months ago, r*ped her at knifepoint, recorded a video, and blackmailed her by threatening to make it viral.

The case drew attention after a video of the accused surfaced on social media on Friday, in which he was seen challenging the police and claiming that no action could be taken against him. Following public outrage and media coverage, the police intensified action, leading to his arrest a day later, even as the complainant altered her statement.

Ashok Singh (50), son of Laxminarayan Singh, has a long criminal record spanning nearly three decades. Police records show that nine cases have been registered against him since 1996, including grievous assault, rioting, obstructing government work, house trespass, extortion, criminal intimidation, and use of abusive and obscene language. In 2025, a case of criminal breach of trust was also registered against him under the BNS.

The investigation in the case is ongoing.
