00:00The Galen Center for Health and Social Policy has slammed the proposed 3.06 billion ringgit
00:07cut to the health ministry's budget, warning it could undermine the public health care system
00:12and put patients and frontline workers at risk. Its CEO, Azro Kaleb, said the reduction would
00:19have direct consequences across hospital wards, operating theaters, emergency departments,
00:25clinics, pharmacies, laboratories, and patients waiting for treatment.
00:30He said the cost of this cut would be seen in delayed procedures, longer waiting lists,
00:35medicine shortages, deteriorating facilities, exhausted healthcare workers, avoidable complications,
00:42and preventable deaths. Azro added that the public health care system was already under
00:48severe pressure, with hospitals and clinics only receiving the minimum resources needed
00:53to function safely and effectively.
00:55He said more than 70% of Malaysians rely on the public health care system, especially
01:01vulnerable groups like low-income households, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.
01:07He urged Pooja Jaya to reconsider stressing that healthcare spending is a core public investment,
01:13and that weakening the public health care system would harm lives, productivity, economic stability,
01:19and social trust. Earlier today, the finance ministry proposed 5.4 billion ringgit in operational
01:26expenditure cuts for the health and higher education ministries as part of measures to save government
01:31and funds amid the impact of the Iran war.
