The Police Commissioner and the Mayor of Port of Spain say the new Police Post on the Brian Lara Promenade reflects progress being made in reducing crime in the nation's capital.

They insist the capital city is safe for Christmas shoppers.

The opening ceremony was also attended by the Homeland Security Minister and the Opposition MP representing Port of Spain South.

Juhel Browne reports.

00:00Police Commissioner Alastair Gravaro had a moment of reflection in the Roman Catholic
00:04Cathedral on the eastern end of downtown Port of Spain, as he led a walkabout with the city's
00:10mayor, Chinua Lane, and other officials before the official opening of the Brian Lara Promenade
00:16Police Post.
00:17Last year, this time, there were 400 robberies in the city of Port of Spain for the year.
00:24And this year, it's 258. Why all you think that is? Astute leadership, professionalism,
00:37and getting the officers under their command to do what is right.
00:42Mayor Lane said the police post on the Promenade is the second one in Port of Spain.
00:48The first police post that we opened is on South Quay, and we opened that police post in
00:53support of our program in collaborating with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service in
00:59support of our program to see a more orderly city so that the parking enforcement initiative
01:06that you see happening in the downtown Port of Spain area, that initiative is supported
01:12by the South Quay police post.
01:15Downtown Owners and Merchants Association President Gregory Abood praised the work of hardworking
01:21police officers. As he said, business owners are willing to assist in the construction of
01:26another police post.
01:27So you don't have to look for an abandoned taxi stand. We will help you to build a post
01:34all the way east because when somebody has their personal belongings snatched here, the perpetrators
01:39do not run to Richmond Street. They run to that eastern flank. And once you are on that eastern flank,
01:45they are not going to be encouraged if their exit route of escape is blocked.
01:51The mayor explained that the police post on the Promenade caters in part for cruise ship arrivals.
01:57Ladies and gentlemen, we sought to ensure that we can open this police post in advance of the bulk of the
02:05of the bulk of the cruise ship season, in advance of the bulk of the Christmas season, in advance of the
02:12bulk of the Carnival season. But this is not a seasonal police post. My commitment to you
02:20is that for as long as I wear this chain, this police post will be a fixture in downtown Port of Spain.
02:27And the opening of the Brown-Larra Promenade police post saw politics being put aside for a moment
02:32as Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, the mayor and Port of Spain South MP Keith Scotland
02:39all attended the ceremony. Jewel Brown, TV6 News.
