Safety and security in the Capital City is one of the priority areas for the Port of Spain City Corporation.

Mayor Chinua Alleyne announced some of the plans moving forward, which involves a new police post. It will see a 24-hour police presence at one of the busiest areas in the city.

00:00As part of the celebrations of the 111th anniversary of the restoration of municipal and civil rights to the people of Port of Spain,
00:08Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Allen highlighted some of the areas that matter to Bridgeses.
00:14Speaking at the Port of Spain City Corporation's awards ceremony, Allen pointed to security.
00:19The Council has approved and expects to commence in the not-too-distant future the construction of a new police post on Independence Square.
00:30This investment geared towards providing a 24-hour policing presence by the city police on Independence Square and Envirens.
00:40We've also worked very closely and very successfully with TNTech on effecting streetlight repairs across the city.
00:48And we look forward to continuing that collaboration throughout the term.
00:53Allen also stated that over the past year, there has been a focus by the Council on improving several areas,
00:59including flooding in the city.
01:02He indicated that investments have been made in plant and machinery to mitigate the problem.
01:08We have begun to see some success by way of a reduced incidence of flooding in the central business district during recent rain events.
01:17The Council is optimistic that continued leadership from the heads of both the Disaster Management Unit and the St. James Division will yield more results.
01:25The Council has also made significant investments in our road patching capacity.
01:31We have recently acquired a new three-ton roller, and we've successfully reformed our road patching staff into one cohesive unit.
01:39The public can expect to see a much more efficient road restoration unit in operation in the city heading into the new financial year.
01:49Allen said he toured the new assessment center for the socially displaced in the city,
01:54and he's looking forward to addressing the issues relating to that vulnerable segment of the population.
02:00He told Burgesses that upgrades are also expected to be done to the central market and the Port of Spain crematorium.
02:07Among the awardees were two recipients nominated by Allen to receive the keys to the city,
02:14Trinidad All-Stars Steel Orchestra, which was not present to collect the award, and the Bocas Lit Fest.
02:20Other awards were presented to Burgesses for various contributions toward the development of the city and its people.
