00:00I'm always a little uncomfortable with this, but it is the way our industry works.
00:04It's the same thing in acting, movies, TV.
00:08In the industry, those who are on microphone or on camera or on stage, Dan, they are called?
00:20Actors.
00:20No, they're called talent.
00:22Oh, sorry.
00:23Like we're called talent.
00:24And it's a little uncomfortable because it's as if, like, I don't know, like we're the only talented ones here, which is not the case at all.
00:32Especially on our show.
00:33Right.
00:33We're not the most, we're not the, I don't even know if we're the most important parts of a radio station.
00:38There's a lot of things going on here.
00:40Okay?
00:41But our name is talent, and it's a perfect way to comp it because, like, I look right now at Mark Grandy.
00:48Yep.
00:48I can see him.
00:49Now, Mark.
00:50He's got talent.
00:51He's very talented.
00:52Very.
00:52Both on the air and off.
00:54Lucas.
00:55Well, anyway, so, like.
00:56I mean, I'm not going to allow that.
00:58Lucas is very talented.
00:59I know he is.
01:00I'm kidding.
01:01Of course.
01:01Like, there's, and this is what I'm getting at.
01:04Okay.
01:05I got you, Lucas.
01:06Good job.
01:07Yep.
01:08Thanks, Tibbs.
01:08Terrible at higher or lower, but talented.
01:11Right.
01:11Right.
01:12We all have our flaws.
01:14Stikes and weaknesses.
01:15We've all got holes in our game.
01:17Sure.
01:17There's no question.
01:18Okay.
01:18So, this word, talent, I want to break it down at the highest of levels because whenever
01:27there is, A, a disappointing player who was a high draft pick, oh, what a waste of talent.
01:37He's so talented.
01:39Trey Lance, James Wiseman.
01:41He's got all that talent.
01:42Yep.
01:43And then there's wee little, wee little guy over here who you just found.
01:49Yep.
01:50Either at the bottom of the draft or not drafted at all.
01:53And, yeah, maybe he's 30 years old before he ever really gets some run.
01:58And that person.
01:5830 years old before he's 30 years old before he's 30 years old before he's 30 years old.
02:11They are squeezing every single drop out of that orange.
02:16And I don't know if we're using the word right, I guess is what I would like to say.
02:23So, whenever I hear someone, and obviously today there's going to be a whole lot of Pat
02:28Spencer over here on one side of the coin, and then the likes of Jonathan Kamingo over
02:32here on the other side of the coin.
02:34And that's what we'll say.
02:36Oh, one of them.
02:37Boy, the Warriors have screwed this up because he's so talented.
02:41Which one is talented?
02:43Which one is actually talented?
02:46Because I think what we actually mean is that somebody has a sparkly skill set.
02:52But if that doesn't actually turn into execution, who cares?
02:58Why are we so focused on quote-unquote talent?
03:03Or, as I would put it, we're misusing the word.
03:05Well, I mean, what is talent?
03:07What's talent?
03:07Essentially.
03:08I mean, and you could put this into any business, any sport, any whatever you want to do.
03:15And ultimately, your talent is only as good as your ability to apply it to your business.
03:22So, yeah.
03:23Your talent can only be what it is based on what you're trying to do.
03:27So, Pat Spencer, 6'2", can't really jump, isn't going to go buy people off the dribble.
03:35And he can shoot pretty well.
03:37But is Pat Spencer talented?
03:39Probably not.
03:40Like, if you did an NBA combine on, like, dribble, end-to-end, and back.
03:47They do do an NBA combine.
03:48But if they did it now, like, ability to jump and all the things, he would be in the bottom 15%.
03:55So, he's not very talented.
03:58But when he plays basketball, he plays to where he can score, and they win.
04:03And isn't that talent?
04:04Right.
04:05I guess that's what I'm saying.
04:06I've always actually wondered about the combine, as they call it in the NFL, the underwear Olympics.
04:11It's kind of a weird deal, right?
04:13We poke you.
04:13We prod you.
04:14We make you jump.
04:15We make you run around in circles.
04:17You put underwear on.
04:18You run really fast.
04:19You know what you don't do at the NFL combine?
04:23You don't play football.
04:24Nope.
04:25And there, sometimes, in lies, part of the mistakes that teams make in the draft.
04:32Why did Lamar Jackson wait all the way, in this day and age of quarterbacks, where people
04:38lose their cookies to get up at the top of the draft board to get a quarterback, that
04:44guy made it all the way to the end of the first round.
04:49And now he's multiple-time MVP.
04:52And, by the way, what's odd there, he does have, quote-unquote, talent.
04:58But, people talk their way out of it.
05:01Oh, he's not going to have real talent.
05:03No, he's got that, too.
05:05So, I guess what I would love to say today is Pat Spencer is talented.
05:11He's very talented.
05:13He just doesn't have a sparkly skill set.
05:16And that's okay, because NBA games are not won and lost by sparkly skill sets.
05:21And now, when we transfer that conversation to Jonathan Kaminga, I think that is definitive
05:27as well.
05:28That he's got a sparkly skill set.
05:30That doesn't win NBA games.
05:33And that is the problem.
05:37And everybody's insinuation that a coach or a team should automatically be able to turn
05:43a sparkly skill set into execution is a fallacy argument that's been proven every single year
05:50of every sport, in every draft, always.
05:53All of us could sit here without even thinking about it and come up with a list of ten names
05:59who have sparkly skill sets and they sucked.
06:02I mean out loud busts in the biggest way possible.
06:07But they can do unbelievable, individual, little thingamabobs that get us excited about
06:14the sport.
06:15But it doesn't mean they can execute and win in their sport.
06:17It depends on the system and the scheme.
06:19And I do think that JK, Jonathan Kaminga, in this system is not a great fit.
06:24Like, what he does really, really well, what makes him a great athlete, what makes him so
06:29talented is the ability to get the ball and do what he does.
06:32And in this offense, you don't want to have that person because you've got Steph, you've
06:38got Jimmy, and your offense is not built around somebody who can just take over and go individual
06:43and all the rest of it.
06:45And so I think that JK, eventually, in the right system, he can be a great player, he can
06:51be a talented player, but will they win?
06:54I don't think so.
06:55Well, and even that is only a projection.
06:59I'm not going to disagree with you.
07:00We've seen him put up points, and obviously, yes, he's got a sparkly skill set.
07:05And there are times where that really shows itself on the court, and there are times where
07:09it doesn't.
07:10But we are still completely in the I don't know zone with regard to whether or not
07:16Jonathan Kaminga, even in a different system, suddenly succeeds to become a consistent, you
07:22can do this every night, kind of 20, 25 point per game winning player in the national basketball
07:30association.
07:31You're kidding yourself if you think that there's a definitive answer to that.
07:35If I'll admit that I don't know, then you should too.
07:38We don't know that.
07:40We do not know that.
07:42That has not been proven by any stretch.
07:44Like, does it just not work here?
07:47Or does it just not work?
07:49We don't know that yet.
07:50Like, the only thing I'd say we know is that it works sometimes.
07:55Yep.
07:56Sometimes it does.
07:57I'll say that.
07:58He's not like a, boy, he stinks every time he plays.
08:00He's not that.
08:02But I don't think we've proven anything else.
08:05No.
08:05And I look at Jordan Poole as a good example where, you know, when he was here, he was
08:09really good, and they won, and they were a championship team.
08:13And, you know, at times he was maybe not quite the player they wanted, but then you go to
08:18Washington, which, all right, now it's your team, you and Kuzma, and he had two years
08:23there, and they didn't really win kind of ever.
08:25And then now he's in New Orleans, and he's only played seven games, and it's probably too
08:30early to tell.
08:31But Jordan Poole, to me, is a great example where he's very talented, but your talent,
08:36it has to contribute to winning.
08:38Otherwise, I mean, what is it?
08:40Let's wet the whistle a little bit, because I'd really love to hear from a lot of people
08:44today.
08:45Like, how do you define talent?
08:47Who's talented on the Warrior Rock?
08:49Is Pat Spencer talented?
08:52How do you reason with the idea of, does his talent match some of the other Warriors who
08:58were first-round draft picks?
08:59888-957-9570.
09:01Let's go to Matt Narinda.
09:02Hi, Matt.
09:03Thanks for the call.
09:03What's up?
09:06Good afternoon, gents.
09:07Great crossover, and good start to the show.
09:09Thanks, Matt.
09:11Just to touch on that.
09:13You're welcome.
09:13Just to touch on that, Mark.
09:16You know, the answer, I think, is, you know, talent might be the wrong word, right?
09:22Because if you're in the NBA, you're talented.
09:24Sure.
09:24All right, so let's park that for a second, okay?
09:28And I get it, stats don't make for great radio, so I'll roll through them quick.
09:32But, you know, going into the weekend, the Warriors were 7-6.
09:36You can imagine how violent this discussion is getting on Bay Area dads' text chains.
09:42I mean, they're 7-6 when Kaminga starts, 4-6 when he doesn't.
09:47But he averaged 17-and-a-half, 7-and-a-half, and 3-and-a-half in October when he played more than 30 games.
09:55Draymond is the best defender on the team at a D-rating of 112.
09:59Pods is 113.
10:00The rest of the crew is 114-and-115, including Kaminga.
10:06He shot 41% from 3 in October.
10:09They were 3-and-3 in those games.
10:11And that was the Lakers, Denver, Memphis, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and Sacramento.
10:17Or Indiana and Sacramento, right?
10:19Like, they have a better winning percentage for the end of last season and the beginning of this season
10:25when Kaminga starts than when he doesn't.
10:27But the problem with this team is way deeper than Kaminga.
10:33Because the stats, they are better.
10:37They win more basketball games when he starts and plays 30 minutes.
10:41Yeah, Matt.
10:44This is one of those...
10:45Thanks, Matt.
10:46To me, that's a very, very clear.
10:48Numbers are numbers.
10:49Are they your numbers?
10:50Because I bet you've been trumpeting this for a while.
10:53Like, you come up with all kinds of numbers that suggest their efficiency on the floor when he's on the floor
10:58is not as good as their efficiency when he's not on the floor.
11:01And it was a DNP against Chicago yesterday, and they beat the Bulls by 30.
11:06They blew them out without Steph.
11:07Yep.
