00:00And Dan, I was able to keep the anti-seize bottle clean. Pretty amazing. This stuff
00:06you don't wear like the silver stuff, so I like it a lot. Even though it was
00:09pretty messy over there on the table, it cleans right up.
00:13Welcome to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage, The Great Race kicks off in St. Paul, Minnesota.
00:58135 classics, hidden checkpoints, and nine days of grit and friendship on the road to
01:04South Carolina. Then we head to Southfield Classics for a deep dive into wiring the
01:13heart of an electric truck. Finally, Sam tackles a 66 Corvette for some classic
01:22steering and suspension maintenance.
01:28We have 135 plus cars in The Great Race. Checkpoints along the way that they don't
01:36know in advance, and so the goal is you're going to stay on target. From start to finish,
01:41it's like family to me. Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard, it's a complete family
01:46member, it's an experience. All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:50Winning an ace in The Great Race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:54Were we on time and everybody else was wrong? Were they on time and we were wrong? I guess we'll find out tonight.
02:04From St. Paul to the Carolinas, 135 vintage machines chase the clock on the open road.
02:10I sold my car about a year ago, and Randy Cohen had purchased that car, and I've talked to him
02:20several times. But my dad and uncle had a dealership, Nagy Olds and Myersdale, and my dad had purchased
02:27that car for my mom, and it's been in our family 53 years. So I surprised Randy and come down to see it.
02:35So it was very, very nice to see the car for the last time, and well, hopefully not the last time,
02:40but yeah, it was very, very nice. We'd text message each other a couple of times, and it was like,
02:45it was like I said, a last minute decision to come down to see it. Like I said, it sat in our garage for
02:5153 years. It's hard to see it again and see it drive away. Yeah, because I ran it through high school,
02:57up through my senior year until I joined the military, and then it went back in the garage and it only got out
03:01once in a while, and my middle daughter used it to get married in. That was really the last time it
03:06was out for a good trip. Well, it felt good, but Randy said if he does it next year, his brother said
03:12maybe he might not be the navigator, and I said, well, put me in that seat. I might take that seat
03:17if you do it again next year, and he said he'd let me know. Now, like he said, he said they haven't
03:22got lost yet, and as long as they finish the race, that's what they're happy with. That would be good
03:26for the first time. My dad collected antique cars, so he has a poster in the garage. I think it was
03:331986. I think it went through Bedford, Pennsylvania, and dad had a 37 Ford, and he ran down to
03:40see him go through. Our day's been spot on today. I got to remember, zero to 40, seven seconds. That's
03:48what I use. Not 12. Not 12. That's an easy, easy roll. No, he's been really good so far. Like I said,
03:55the navigators and the drivers are really frustrated at each other. You can see it by
03:58their body language. Yeah. And so far, we're doing a good job. The good thing is that we laugh about
04:03it. We smile. We've been in the car with each other for 12 days, 2,300 miles, and if we can do it,
04:08you guys can do it. You guys can do it. Yeah, we just have a wonderful time together.
04:13Well, Pat came to see me at my shop, was looking for parts and information on his transmission.
04:20I fixed the transmission for him. He was so happy with it. I wanted to put an
04:24advertising on his truck, and he said, well, why don't you just come with us? You could drive
04:28the chase truck, and then if we got other problems, you could help out. He talked me into it. I said,
04:34okay. I didn't know if I'd like it or not, but it's been a lot of fun, a lot of fun. We've had a
04:39great time. Yeah. Well, Brian and I own the transmission shop together, and I met Pat there,
04:44and when he invited Brian, he said I was welcome to come. So last year, I flew to New York and met them
04:49about halfway through the Great Race, and this year, I've been on it the whole time. Just a little bit of work in the
04:53parking lot. Yeah, not really had any problems, just some service work, but it's been running good.
05:00I just drove this car from South Florida all the way up to St. Paul and back now here. The race has
05:06been great. The car's been running good, but unfortunately, yesterday at the finish line,
05:10the air conditioning unit went out, and I was able to diagnose the issue. Cannot get the part because
05:16it's 20 years old. Hopefully, the manufacturer of Vintage Air will be able to send me a part. If not,
05:21I'll make one. And we're having a great time. We're enjoying ourselves. This is our 13th year doing
05:27this. We're having a great time. We love the camaraderie and the friends that we keep seeing
05:33every year. We're happy that it's almost over, but we have a lot of mixed emotions. We're ready for the
05:40next year. Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU. Brought to you by the following companies.
06:10Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:25A family-run business and a family of racers, Team Sharp hits the road in their 1916 Hudson.
06:43From rain to road mazes, it's teamwork, precision, and pure racing passion all the way to the finish
06:49line. Family-run and operated business for 33 years. We supply the automotive industry with
06:55fasteners, chemicals, and shop supplies, and we focus on American-made products with quality service
07:01and quality products. I grew up in the business my whole life. I've done everything from cleaning the
07:07bathrooms, to working in the warehouse, to picking and packing orders, to out on the road selling.
07:13And now I have my fiancee coming on board as well. We're ready to take the family business to the next
07:19level. We're sponsoring Team Sharp. They're out of Freeport, New York. They're running a 1916 Hudson
07:26Hill Climber, previous champions. They won last year's race in the previous year. Howard, the dad,
07:32wasn't able to participate in the race this year. His daughter-in-law Dana stepped in to take his place
07:38as the driver, and she's been working with Doug, and the two of them are heading up Team Sharp this year.
07:48They sent us into what they call a maze, which is where they have the cars go on the same route
07:52multiple times. This was the worst one that most everybody on the race has been through.
07:58We saw the same car three or four different times, the same roads two or three different times, and
08:03there were two or three different roads that we went back and forth on.
08:06I'm real sure he got tired of me, because we'd be going down, and we were about, what,
08:10were we 36 today? Yeah, car number 39. 39, okay. So we're going down the roads, and I'm like,
08:17hey man, I don't remember seeing any of the race cars when we were coming this way, because we passed
08:22probably 10 race cars every turn we took, and luckily we didn't get caught up by any of them.
08:27The only issue we had today was the rain, really. There were a couple times where we came up on cars that
08:32were a little bit off, and we were right on their bumper, you know, three seconds behind them, and that's
08:36close for the race. Yeah. We don't want to be that close. Luckily, we were all going in different
08:40directions, though. They would turn, and we would keep going. So today was stage eight. On the last,
08:45on stage eight and stage nine, last two days, you can't throw out any of your legs. So if you have a
08:51bad leg today, it stays. So we were happy when we saw our score. Yeah. 23 seconds roll with one leg was a
08:5916. So if we would have thrown that out, it would have been great. This has been an excellent day.
09:07We had a great lunch up in Galax, Virginia. That little town community there in Appalachia came
09:12out to host the cars, and it was absolutely incredible. Just beautiful rolling streets with
09:16mature trees, but we got out here tonight. We've had a little sprinkle or two, but overall this has
09:19been a fantastic day. This community really showed out as well, so we are just thrilled to be in the great
09:24city, North Carolina. Town of Mooresville is Race City, USA. This is probably one of the greatest
09:32towns to live in if you're a car guy. If you like cars, come to Mooresville. We've got a show every
09:39second Sunday, I believe, of the month here. We also got a car group that meets every Wednesday,
09:44and literally there's a car show every week, every day of the week in Mooresville, North Carolina.
09:50But there's a lot of other history here as far as NASCAR goes as well, and that's why we love living
09:55here. It's one of our best days. One of our best days. And wait until you hear the story.
10:01It's a story for sure. It's a story. It started with a chipped tooth in Galax for this guy.
10:07And then it went uphill from there. Good run today, guys. Great run. Last day.
10:13One of our best days on one of the toughest parts. There was a family of people in front of their house
10:19at the front yard, and we had missed the turn. I turned around and go back. I went around a racer
10:24at 90 in front of the house where the people were cheering right in front of two cars that were
10:28coming this way, which were our cars.
10:40You guys have heard me talk about how important grounds are, especially when you're converting one
10:44of these old cars into fuel injection. All these old cars, they only have one ground strap, heavy
10:49ground for the starter wire somewhere in front of the engine. And there's a second ground that's going
10:53to be a strap that's very thin. It's going to be old at the intake manifold going to the firewall.
10:58Well, when you're doing fuel injection, most cases, you're going to take the intake manifold off. Go
11:02ahead and replace that ground because it's old. And the ground up front that's going to be for the
11:06starter is not enough. You got to add two grounds. So you're going to add one ground to the intake
11:10manifold or the cylinder head to the firewall, making sure you scratch the surface,
11:14integrity on both sides. Second ground is going to go from the block to the chassis as well,
11:19making sure once again, you've cleaned it and you've got plenty of integrity because the voltage
11:24has got to be perfect for the Edelbrock or Holley Sniper to work properly. In the instructions,
11:29they tell you to go to the battery with the power and ground, but they never tell you to address the
11:32grounds on the vehicle. Very important that when you guys are converting these old cars and you're
11:36installing an Edelbrock or a Sniper or any kind of fuel injection system that you address those grounds,
11:41add two grounds, one for redundancy, and that way you'll have good lasting performance with no
11:47issues and you won't be stranded on the side of the road. Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by
11:54NHOU. At Southfield Classics, Noah and Dan reveal the wiring backbone of their high voltage builds.
12:14Streamline harnesses designed for safety, serviceability, and performance.
12:18All right, we're back here at Southfield Classics. I'm here with Noah and Dan and below us,
12:26we've got the complete wire harness for the 12-volt side right now. Yes, it is. It is actually the
12:32complete 12-volt harness that controls a lot of the components that are in this battery system.
12:36You know, that's not bad when you think about it. When you think about how much wiring goes into a
12:41modern car, this, as much as it controls, it's not too scary. It's not too scary for some people,
12:48for a lot of people, they look at it and go, it's a nightmare. But we have pretty detailed diagrams
12:53of how everything runs, where it's supposed to run too, and we're able to run our connectors,
12:57pin them out ourselves to get the correct lengths. So you're doing all this in-house? Yes, a lot of it's
13:02going to be in-house right now, and then eventually we'll get to a point where it just comes to us
13:06pre-laid out, pre-loomed. So what does this actually connect to and control? Everything from the
13:13control systems for the high voltage, you know, for the junction boxes, to the AC, every single
13:19configuration that has to be operated by the ECU or can be controlled by the ECU. The CAN bus,
13:25all the accessories, all the low voltage systems, it's what turns on the high voltage system. Correct.
13:30Every high voltage vehicle out there has this system in it, and that's what's actually failing
13:35in the manufactured cars coming from the dealers. Yeah, that's why we're trying to make sure that we take
13:40and troubleshoot all the problems that we have before we put it in. So which vehicle would this
13:45be for? This will be for the white truck that we are currently working on right now,
13:49so we can finish here in a short period of time. Let's say this GT, would it be more or less wires
13:55in the sense of a GT, you think? I guess it could be probably almost about the same. We try to simplify
14:01a lot of these things to where it's easier for us to install and for whoever technician to diagnose
14:06down the road, if it has to be, can be diagnosed a lot easier. That's the main thing is to make
14:11these vehicles serviceable. Correct. And that was our main objective when we started all this is,
14:16you know, we were all former, I was a former technician and everything. We wanted to make
14:19sure that we were easy to service, that easy to trace if there was any wiring issues. And you guys
14:24try your best. Now we all build cars out there. When we're building the car, you think you have
14:29everything laid out, but then you're like, man, I need this one wire for accessory. I need this one wire
14:33for this relay. You guys have already thought of all that so that you don't have any extras?
14:37If we eliminate components, so basically when we build the truck, we decide, hey,
14:41we don't want the ambient lighting set up, then that is already built into the harness. We just
14:46loom it up and take it out. Do you leave anything for a future accessory add-on? It'll have a accessory
14:51add-on capability. In other words, it's got a loom on its own. It's just for accessories. If somebody
14:56wanted to upgrade, say the stereo or something like that. You got accessory, you got ignition switch on,
15:01all that good stuff. How long does it take to create this harness in-house?
15:05This harness, and only the main reason for particularly why this one took so long,
15:10it should only take maybe a day, day and a half. This one took a couple days because there was
15:15a lot of ways that we wanted to go over a couple things. And they're not very big. They're just little
15:19things that we want to correct and make sure we get right this time around. We're also documenting all of
15:24our harness locations and routing and all that as we're going through this process. So we've built three or
15:30four trucks now, but this is basically finalizing that actual harness and what it's going to look
15:35like and what it's going to be. There you go, guys. This is the 12-volt system of the heart of these
15:39high-voltage vehicles you're going to see here at Southfield Classics. This is very cool. As you can
15:43see, it's high quality. It's going to last you a long time, and that's what you need when you've got
15:47a manufactured vehicle. Check us out next time. We'll be showing you further process of the white truck
15:52getting put back together.
16:05Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
16:09is brought to you by the following companies.
16:25Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
16:55Sam rebuilds a 66 Corvette steering and suspension, teaching the finer points of tie rod setup,
17:01greasing, and radiator upgrades that keep Classics road ready.
17:07She's got her gloves on, so I'm going to go ahead and have her do the suspension upgrade. It's not
17:11really an upgrade. It's really just a rebuild, right? We're going to do the steering components,
17:15which is the tie rods, inner and outer, the sleeves, everything you do to adjust the steering. And then
17:20we'll put it back together. We'll paint everything and it'll look brand new again. You ready to get dirty?
17:24I'm ready. You look excited. Yeah, I love old suspension.
17:29All right, so when you look in underneath here and you see the whole suspension,
17:31you can see it's got old school power steering. The return line going to the pump is completely
17:36pinched, which could have caused all the leakage on the highest pressure side. So we're going to
17:40address that also. Today, what we're going to do is remove and replace the tie rod ends,
17:45the inner, the outer on both sides, along with the adjustment sleeve, making it all new.
17:49That way, when it goes to the alignment shop, it'll be very easily adjusted.
17:54What we got here is this nut is spinning with the joint, okay? No matter what I do,
18:01I can't get it. So I got to stop the joint from turning. We don't care about the ball joints or the
18:06rubber because we're replacing them. So this is where a pitchfork is okay to use.
18:11This is going to be really nice once we put the engine in it, the cold case radiator, along with
18:15the rest of the suspension with the shocks and the bushings for the rear suspension. It'll be solid
18:20again. And when John's turning the wheel, it'll be very reactive, which is what we want.
18:26Okay. So now what we're going to do is roll this over here. And what we want to do is that's the
18:33passenger, that's the driver, okay? We got new sleeves here and new joints. They're the same
18:38on either side. We want to make this assembly the same length. Let's take this here. There is a left and a
18:44right thread. So we're going to put this in here, okay? You want to come over on the other side,
18:50take another one. And what you want to do is when you're adjusting this, you want equal threads on
18:54both sides.
19:04We went ahead and tightened the sleeves, making sure everything is good. So did that. Grease the
19:18fittings. Very important when you guys grease the fittings. It comes with a little bit of grease from
19:21the factory, but three to four pumps. Look at the boot. Make sure the boot is expanding, then stop
19:26pumping because you don't want it to end up looking like this. Look at all that buildup. And a lot of you
19:30guys today may not even run into these because they took away grease fittings 30 years ago in cars.
19:34But when you're working on the custom shop, you're always going to have them. While you have the
19:38grease gun in your hand, take a look and see if there's anything else that needs to be greased.
19:41I went ahead and did the two U-joints on the outsides of the half shafts. Went ahead and did
19:47those and that should be it. It's going to be a nice project when it's done. So the factory radiator
19:52is held in place with the fan shroud. The cold case radiator goes in place and I like to use the aluminum
19:58fan shroud that's with it because the factory one has two tabs missing from it. So I need to figure out a
20:03mounting point. I've got my rogo fastener zip tie holding it in place right now and you know I
20:08kind of like it. I should just double it up. Save me a bunch of time and the customer money. But I'm
20:11not going to do that. Also when I put the vintage air in, that fan shroud and that big fan is going
20:16to do a lot for the cooling aspect of the condenser. All right we got John taken care of as far as a
20:21little bit of maintenance goes. Got the steering taken care of. Next we're going to do the suspension
20:25and hopefully one day next year they'll see it completed. But unfortunately you don't want to see me
20:29putting the engine in and out of this thing. This is pretty cool the 66 Corvette 327. If you guys need
20:34to do any kind of maintenance like this don't forget Summit Racing that not only sells performance products
20:40but they also sell maintenance products and name brands as well. So go to Summit Racing and take care of
20:46your ride. Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms. Send us questions
