00:00On this episode of Hot Rod Garage,
00:01we take our C1 Corvette for a Sunday cruise.
00:30Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage.
00:32I'm Alex Taylor, and this is Lucky Costa.
00:34Hello, or I'm sorry, as you would say, hello.
00:36I forget.
00:37We have to land a plane when we start the episode.
00:39Absolutely.
00:40You want Alex to not talk?
00:41Put her in handcuffs.
00:43All right, so we have a brand new project on the show this week.
00:45It's actually a body style and a color
00:48that I don't think has ever been on the show before.
00:50That is fair to say, yes.
00:51Normally, a 56 Corvette is not in our budget.
00:55This is a lot of people who are not in our budget.
00:58These are high-dollar, high-value cars.
01:00However, we found a really good deal on this one.
01:04I hope so, because, well, is the rest of it
01:06going to be getting here soon?
01:07That's the whole thing.
01:09The rest of the parts didn't come with the car,
01:11but we have plenty of good stuff to put in it.
01:12But the whole problem here, as you can very clearly see,
01:16there's no engine, there's no transmission.
01:18We're missing a windshield.
01:19There's a lot of work to do, but that leaves a nice blank canvas
01:23for what we want to do with this car at some point.
01:25It kind of looks like a shark.
01:26It kind of looks like a shark, the early ones.
01:28OK, that's fair.
01:28It sort of has that little sleaky sort of snake,
01:30shark-looking thing.
01:31OK.
01:32More of a goldfish or a guppy?
01:35Guppy.
01:36A koi?
01:36Could be a koi.
01:37A koi.
01:38Oh, it's orange.
01:39It's white.
01:39It's kind of koi, yeah.
01:40Now, don't get me wrong.
01:41There's some really nice hot rod and radical Corvettes
01:44out there, this year model as well.
01:46But for the most part, you kind of look at it,
01:49and you get the parade cruiser vibe.
01:51Very nice.
01:52Yes.
01:53I can see it now.
01:54So while that would be a lot of fun,
01:55I'd love to have lucky as the driver
01:57as I sat in the back and did my waves through the crowds.
02:01Professional parade driver.
02:03Oh, something to add to my resume.
02:04I like it.
02:05We're switching it up, because the whole guppy persona
02:08around here, the whole...
02:08So you're going to drive and I'm going to wave?
02:09No, no, no.
02:10Oh, not switching it up that far, huh?
02:11No, we're making this parade car
02:13where it's going to ruin the parade,
02:14where we can drive it to the parade and then run it
02:16with a smoke show very classily.
02:18I like that, I like that.
02:20So for power plant going in this,
02:22I'm going to make you say it.
02:24LS swap the world.
02:27I'll say it.
02:28Exactly what you said.
02:30We're kind of doing, you know,
02:31a little bit of a modern twist.
02:32The LS3 would have first came in the C6.
02:34We're taking that modern technology
02:36and that modern power plant,
02:38and we're putting it in our C1 Corvette.
02:40It's a nice engine that's a crate engine.
02:42It's not out of the junkyard.
02:43It's all aluminum.
02:44It's got the hot cam.
02:45It's got all the good stuff.
02:46So we're sticking it in there.
02:47We're not just leaving the plastic intake.
02:49We have good parts from Holley,
02:50which kind of gives it a classic look
02:52with the modern EFI technology and power.
02:55We've got a really nice transmission
02:57to go behind it with a five-speed,
02:58which leads us all the way to the back of the car
03:00to take the power that we're putting to this.
03:02We have a quick performance nine-inch
03:04that should be close to a bolt-in for this car.
03:07Right, and that's complete with the dropout,
03:09the third member, and axles and everything.
03:11So we have big plans for this car in the future.
03:14And at some point, you'll see it
03:15with the stance, with wheels, and all that good stuff.
03:18But for now, we're putting all the performance parts
03:21and all of the necessary parts we need
03:23to get us to the nearest burn pit
03:26so we can roast some tires off this thing.
03:27Oh, no, zero traction.
03:29Darn, how did that happen?
03:32Welcome to Hot Rod Garage.
03:34Let's get to work.
03:45So we should bring in our engine, unbox it.
03:49Then I'm going to start assembling all of that
03:51based off this table.
03:52Uh-huh.
03:53And then you can go over there, pull gas tank out,
03:55start using your friend's Sawzall, custom exhaust.
03:58Yes.
03:59And then we can meet back up.
04:03OK, I guess that's right.
04:05I think it's not right still.
04:06That was excessive.
04:11Uncalled for.
04:12OK, what were the specs you gave us on this earlier?
04:14This is a 495 horsepower, 473 foot-pounds of torque.
04:23Boom.
04:24That was good.
04:24Yeah, it took me a week to memorize that.
04:27So this is an aluminum 6.2 LS3 crate engine.
04:30It is a nice motor.
04:32Like, this is a good base.
04:34It's not a little LS, it's a bigger LS for being an LS.
04:38Yeah.
04:39So we have the long block here, which, as you can see,
04:42we don't have the intake, we don't have coils on.
04:44A long block would be heads to oil pan,
04:47front and back of engine.
04:48However, nothing bolt on.
04:50And then short block would be no heads, rotating assembly,
04:52block, and generally no oil pan on a short block.
04:54OK, right.
04:55So long block is basically a motor without all
04:57the externals bolted to it.
04:58Well, now that this is unboxed, how about I
05:02take this over to our table, and you can go back over there?
05:05Yeah.
05:06You know how you asked me to leave that area?
05:07Yeah.
05:08I'm going to have to ask you to leave this area, ma'am.
05:10Can you carry this for me?
05:11I can.
05:12Come on.
05:14Yeah.
05:15Come on.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Ow.
05:20The owner said something to the effect
05:22of the rear panna had popped up while it was being towed,
05:26and it created some sort of extreme damage.
05:29We're going to see how extreme, because underneath all of that
05:31is the gas tank.
05:33The original tank, original line, original wiring,
05:37but generally these things will see a bunch of corrosion,
05:40and the cinder will just sink, fail,
05:43or disintegrate inside the tank.
05:44That will, in turn, end up going inside the fuel line
05:47and clogging up the carburetor.
05:49We really can't take that chance with fuel injection.
05:51The fuel filters are between 10 microns and 100 microns,
05:55because you don't want the smallest speck of anything getting
05:58through and clogging up an injector.
05:59A lean injector or a restricted injector
06:01not only cuts down horsepower, but could create
06:04a condition that would damage the motor,
06:05like literally ruin the engine.
06:10So we get to start putting stuff on our crate engine here.
06:12It's a nice piece as is, but like we said earlier,
06:15it is a long block, so none of the accessories came on it.
06:17We do have a Holley mid-mount system to go on this,
06:20so that just means that where the water pump goes,
06:22there's accessories that come off of it,
06:24rather than having other bracketry and stuff
06:26to hold things like power steering and an alternator
06:28and things like that, so it's a really nice piece.
06:30You guys have seen us assemble it before,
06:32so to speed it up, or in an effort to speed it up,
06:35it is, we went ahead and assembled it off camera.
06:39The downside of that, while that does save time,
06:42is it is rather heavy.
06:43So this is a combination of a couple different kits,
06:46because we had them laying around, so mix and match.
06:48Doesn't affect anything, it's just a look.
06:49We're trying something new.
06:50So I am going to try to finagle this.
06:55It's not going to be graceful at all, pre-warning.
06:58If you've got a friend around that can help hold things
07:00in place and lift and all that, it's good to do.
07:03It did save some time, but we do have to take some stuff apart
07:05so I can put all the bolts in.
07:07A reason to run the mid-mount kit and why we usually do is,
07:10you guys know, engine bays are very tight,
07:12and usually you run out of space,
07:14even if you think you have space.
07:15So the Holley mid-mount kit is really nice
07:17because it keeps everything all nice and tight and compact.
07:19They're really easy to service,
07:21and they're also very simple to install.
07:23And then you don't have all the extra bracketry
07:25of will this fit, will that work, does this line up.
07:27Very simple, so highly suggest it.
07:29It's a nice upgrade.
07:41So I got the fuel pump installed.
07:42There's a return line built into that.
07:43You just have to cut everything with gasket in place.
07:46It was nine inches from the mounting surface
07:47to the bottom of the tank.
07:48I leave about a sixteenth of an inch
07:49so it doesn't actually compress the filter there.
07:54It doesn't, you don't want it to smash
07:55and try to fight around that.
07:57Have it floating on the sending unit.
07:59You measure this mounting surface
08:00to the bottom of the tank, you cut that in half.
08:02In this case, it's exactly nine inches, ding!
08:07Nine inches to the mounting surface.
08:09So from the O-ring, from the gasket,
08:12to the pivot point on the float,
08:15that's the screw right here.
08:16I'm going to put that at 4.5.
08:19Lock it down right there.
08:21And then when I put the float in,
08:23it will go up to the top for full
08:25and all the way to the bottom.
08:26The throw of the float will be nine inches total.
08:30Fuel pump is installed.
08:32Pickup, return line all ready to be run.
08:35I have to install a vent.
08:37I can put this outside the vehicle,
08:38above the highest level of the tank.
08:40It's a little check ball.
08:42If your car were to roll over, gas will come out.
08:44You can actually hear the ball inside there.
08:46And there's a little filtration right there.
08:48Prevents the dirt from going in, but allow air to.
08:51Run some lines, put in some straps,
08:53and I think I'm about done with that.
08:55Oh, look, it's lunchtime.
08:57Perfect!
08:58So I'm going to go ahead and start assembling the intake.
08:59Not going to permanently mount it.
09:02I'm going to make it where we can remove it
09:03so we can drop the engine in.
09:04But now's a great time to talk about the combination
09:06that we're doing.
09:07So while we are putting a very modern motor
09:09into our classic Corvette,
09:10we wanted to give a nod to the styling of the era
09:14with a dual quad style setup.
09:15We're just going to be putting EFI throttle bodies
09:17instead of carburetors.
09:19One that we talked about going with
09:20was the stealth throttle body.
09:23And so basically that's where the injector is actually inside.
09:25It looks more like a carburetor.
09:27But we wanted to do the two sitting side by side.
09:30The problem that they said is that the bowls are so big
09:32that you can't physically sit them beside each other.
09:35So a cool alternative to that,
09:37something that you don't always commonly see,
09:40are these throttle bodies that we have right here.
09:42So rather than having one that's out front
09:44or something like that, we have these.
09:45So they kind of look like a carburetor.
09:47They kind of give that look.
09:49But we'll have two like this.
09:52So you have one, two.
09:53Can do a different top up here.
09:55It looks kind of docile,
09:56but it's going to be more than capable
09:58of what we're wanting to do.
09:59Excited about this, so I'm going to start building it out,
10:02getting the fuel rails set up, get it all assembled.
10:04And we'll pull it back off so we can drop this in the car,
10:07but it'll be ready to go.
10:09Nice, easy mount.
10:12If you want to run an LS,
10:14but you don't want your coils right in your face,
10:16there's the option of covering them up,
10:18remote mount, or you can just own it.
10:21I hear something behind me.
10:30What's up?
10:31I'm going to act like I didn't see him.
10:40Go back to your corner, dude.
10:43Let me put all these right here for you.
10:48There you go.
10:51OK, so this is looking pretty good.
10:53Got most of the stuff assembled as far as accessories go.
10:56Now that that lines up, I think we're past
10:59a lot of the stuff here, anyways.
11:01That could be a potential fitment issue.
11:03And we've thinned out the table, not we.
11:04You have thinned out the table quite a bit.
11:06We are swapping spark plug wires.
11:08We need to put the belts on.
11:10We're going to change the thermostat
11:12to make it run a little cooler.
11:13Yeah, I just regularly do that in LSs.
11:16It runs a little bit cooler.
11:17I think I just like them better at 160, 170.
11:19So that's what we're going to do, swap out thermostat.
11:22We have to do the steam ports.
11:24I'm waiting on a new line kit for this.
11:26Ordered a really nice one from Motion Race Works.
11:28Hard line, front to back, all four corners.
11:30Turns out this already has the rear steam ports plugged.
11:34And this is too low.
11:36The intake's too low to run that kit.
11:37So we're waiting on the new kit.
11:38But once that's here, I think I'm done.
11:41I'm done assembling stuff.
11:42I think this thing's good to go.
11:44Yep, and then this is not mounted just yet,
11:46because we are going to lift that up to drop this in the car.
11:49But first, we have something else to do.
11:52Oh, transmission.
11:53Transmission, yes.
11:54Transmission, flywheel, and clutch.
11:55All that.
11:56Yeah.
11:56So we're going to assemble it all together,
11:58do that on the bench, and then mount this to that.
12:00We're having a marriage ceremony.
12:01We haven't had that in a while.
12:03Whoa, whoa, whoa.
12:03We just met a couple episodes ago.
12:05No, one, that's a lie.
12:06A couple seasons ago.
12:07Two, that's not what I'm talking about.
12:09We're not looking for that sort of obligation.
12:11We have to pair those two together, and then we're going
12:13to drop it all in in one fail swoop, right?
12:17And then we still have a lot more to do.
12:18What is that?
12:19Drop it in.
12:20No, we're going to sweep it in.
12:23Then we're going to shoot it right in.
12:25Yeah.
12:25OK.
12:33All right, this is our 56 Corvette behind us.
12:36Not something you would think that you would see on the show,
12:38but it came to us needing a lot of work,
12:40and that's exactly how we can afford it.
12:42We want to take this out to a burn fit near us
12:44and roast the tires.
12:45And that is going to happen with our new transmission right here.
12:48So this is our Tremec 5-speed that we got
12:51from American Powertrain.
12:52They'll send you a packet from bell housing,
12:54the transmission, all the parts in between to make it fit.
12:57So upcoming, I have a little bit more button-up work
13:00to do on our engine.
13:01Lucky is working on the fuel system.
13:03He's already got the new tank dropped in the car.
13:06We are going EFI with this because it's LS,
13:08and we have Holley goodness to do.
13:10Then I'm going to start assembling all of this
13:13and getting it ready to pair with our engine.
13:15I think we're actually a lot closer than it seems
13:18to dropping all this in the car behind us.
13:21OK, so time for some fuel.
13:22What I'm trying to do here is start from the back
13:25and work my way forward.
13:26We've already installed the pump inside the tank.
13:29What comes after the pump is going to be obviously fuel line
13:32and a fuel filter.
13:33This has a pump inside the tank.
13:35We don't have to worry about a filter,
13:36so 100 microns on the frame rail.
13:38Fuel lines to the front.
13:40We also have to run a return line.
13:41This is a return-style system.
13:43I'm going to be mounting a fuel pressure regulator
13:45in the engine compartment.
13:46There is a spring inside here.
13:48Heat affects the way springs work.
13:49You put it next to the exhaust,
13:51your fuel pressure is going to change.
13:52So make sure that's in a nice, cool spot.
13:54And then I'm going to route lines from there
13:57to the fuel injection rail,
13:59and then the return line at the bottom back
14:01to the tank.
14:02So two lines from the back to the front
14:04with a filter and a regulator.
14:06Let's build lines.
14:07This is going to be a blast.
14:10All right, bell housing bolted up.
14:12Got four bolts on it just to make sure that way it's centered
14:14where it's going to land.
14:16All good.
14:17So now what I have here is my magnetic-based dial indicator.
14:20There's four measurements we need.
14:21We need the 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock,
14:24and 9 o'clock position.
14:26And those measurements are going to help you tell
14:28how well aligned the crankshaft in your engine
14:30and the input shaft in your transmission will be.
14:32Misalignment, while it's rare, can cause all sorts
14:35of problems in wear.
14:36So you want to make sure these measurements are right.
14:38And if they're not, you want to fix them.
14:39So I'm going to start at the 12 o'clock position.
14:41Nothing is going to hit as it spins,
14:43because as the engine rotates,
14:45this is all going to rotate as well.
14:47So the dial indicator is going to roll
14:48on the inside of this opening.
14:50We're going to take four different measurements.
14:52Then we'll do a little bit of math to make sure
14:53that this hole basically is going to be centered.
14:56That way our transmission is centered.
14:58OK, so I'm going to set this dial indicator at zero here.
15:03OK, can you roll, please?
15:07OK, slow, slow, slow, stop.
15:1112 o'clock was zero.
15:12That is 369.
15:139 o'clock is negative 1,000.
15:18OK, keep going.
15:20So one of our horizontal runout numbers
15:22for the 3 o'clock position was a positive 0.0015.
15:25That's one and a half thousandths.
15:27Our other number at nine o'clock was a negative 1,000.
15:30So the difference in those two is two and a half thousandths.
15:33We're going to divide that by two,
15:34because that's what your true runout number is.
15:37And that's going to be 1.25 thousandths.
15:39For our vertical, our 12 o'clock was zero,
15:41because that's where we started.
15:42And our six o'clock was three thousandths.
15:44The difference in zero to three is three thousandths.
15:47Divide that by two.
15:48That's one and a half thousandths.
15:49Which, good news, means that we are intolerant,
15:52because the Tremec transmission can have a tolerance
15:54of plus or minus 5,000.
15:57American Powertrain, your instructions rock,
15:59but we are on to the next piece,
16:01which is the clutch assembly.
16:04Moved on to hydraulic clutch.
16:06I was just over there checking out what Alex is doing,
16:08putting in the clutch and the bell housing in play
16:11and hydraulic thrall bearing.
16:14Way too much arithmetic for me.
16:15I came back over here where I could potentially use
16:17a Sawzall and a small hammer.
16:19I'm going to mount a hydraulic master cylinder
16:22just for the clutch.
16:23It's going to go from the factory clutch pedal,
16:25just right there, to where this will mount
16:28through the firewall.
16:29Originally there was a hard rod that went from the clutch.
16:32When you depressed it, it pushed down through the firewall
16:35and hit the Z bar, which converted forward motion
16:39into rearward motion to depress the clutch,
16:42mechanical clutch.
16:43We're going full hydraulic.
16:44This will bolt right to the firewall.
16:47This is the correct angle to go right from the stock pedal.
16:50When you push down, it will depress the hydraulic
16:52master cylinder, then forcing hydraulic fluid
16:56into a hydraulic thrall bearing and compressing
16:59the clutch inside.
17:00It will go from driving a Mack truck
17:03to literally shifting like a Honda.
17:04It's that smooth.
17:06Super easy to drive, no stress.
17:09You don't get, it's not leg day.
17:10Every time we get in the Corvette, this will be nice.
17:12I'm sure the people driving it, me and Alex,
17:15will appreciate it.
17:18Okay, so does this all measure up?
17:19It does, we have $175,000 clearance, so.
17:22Hold on, we don't need a bunch of arithmetic.
17:24Yes, it measures up.
17:25All right, cool.
17:26Glad we got that sorted.
17:27You're going to ruin this whole, I say that.
17:29I know.
17:30What do you want me?
17:32Walk up a little more, right about there.
17:34I can't see.
17:36Okay, that's lined up.
17:37That's a little bit.
17:38There, you're going.
17:40There's this muscle right here, I don't hardly ever use.
17:45We good?
17:46Did the thing slide back?
17:47Yeah.
17:48All right.
17:58So we got accessories on, coils.
18:00We have everything ready on the intake.
18:02Once that's actually in the car for the final time,
18:04we'll put the intake on.
18:05In addition to that, our LS3 got to meet our Tremec 5-speed here,
18:09which is a really great pairing.
18:11Over on my side, I've got the hydraulic clutch all installed.
18:14I've got the fuel lines run, the tanks installed, the pump.
18:16Everything's ready.
18:18That thing is ready for this puppy to go right in.
18:20That would be a C1 and a C6 are going to see you doing burnouts in the...
18:27I forgot what we were doing with that.
18:29But the C1 and the C6, though.
18:30That's a fact.
18:31But remember that we're going to go ahead and swap the oil pan.
18:34They actually shipped this with oil, so we're going to drain it out.
18:36We'll swap the pan out, put the motor mounts on.
18:39And once we get that in, we can move on to the rear end,
18:41which means we can get all the power that we're making to the back tires.
18:45We got our wolf and sheep's clothing,
18:48and then we can head to the burn pit and make some smoke.
18:51Wolf and sheep. I get it. Big engine. Nice car.
18:53Yeah.
18:54Yeah, okay. All right, draining oil.
18:57Let it rain.
18:58I think that's more of a four.
18:59It's going to take a minute.
19:00I'll let that sit there.
19:02All right, so it's finally time to test fit this.
19:08For the most part, everything's gone together really smoothly.
19:11So the next thing that we have to figure out here
19:13is we have these engine mounts.
19:15We got these engine mounts from Mart's chassis,
19:17who also supplied us with a full front crossmember
19:19to replace this outdated factory steering.
19:21We're not going to get to that right now,
19:23but these mounts will at least get our motor in the right place.
19:26So we'll see if that works out very shortly.
19:28If it does, we can get to actually tacking them in.
19:30But now we have to stuff all this goodness into this goodness.
19:35Going in.
19:37This is a terrible idea.
19:39This is never going to go.
19:41Hey, hop in there and crank that puppy around.
19:43Okay, that's good.
19:46Now stand on the transmission.
19:48Stand on it.
19:50So sketchy.
19:52Okay, now don't let it spin.
19:56We feel good?
20:02Yep.
20:03Are we good on the firewall?
20:05Yep.
20:10Did you hear that hit?
20:12Did you hear that?
20:13I didn't hear it either.
20:14We didn't hit nothing.
20:15American Powertrain has the shifter in the exact location
20:19where it should mount directly into this C1.
20:21Right, which is offset the one side and a little bit further back
20:24in your standard shifter.
20:26So we're using that as our reference point
20:28for how far back this needs to be to work with everything else,
20:31which hopefully means that our engine mounts will work
20:35if we can move it back far enough.
20:37Right now, on that side, it looks like the steering
20:39could potentially be an issue.
20:41But we're trying not to panic yet.
20:43Let's just push our luck further back.
20:44Oh, I would love to push my luck.
20:47Ah, ah, ah, ah.
20:51Well, hello there.
20:52Welcome to Hot Rock Garage.
20:54One of the problems you're going to have is motor mounts.
20:56This motor mount welds to the frame on the driver's side.
20:59Also on the driver's side, in the exact same location,
21:02there's a steering limiter for this old antiquated steering
21:04that needs to be replaced.
21:06For now, we're just going to cut a little piece
21:08that's supposed to prevent the steering arm
21:10from going over the limit.
21:12And I'm going to use the end of this motor mount
21:15as the new limiter for the steering.
21:17So is there a limit?
21:19I believe there is no limit today.
21:22Put a bolt in the mount.
21:25Go back the other way.
21:27Right there.
21:27Oh, nice.
21:28Stop right there.
21:30Perfect.
21:31So we have a good plan for what we're doing right now.
21:33Lucky's under there doing some very precise incisions.
21:37So one of our hesitations was we didn't want to do work
21:39that we're going to have to redo just
21:41to put our March chassis front suspension kit,
21:43which is really nice, in at a later point.
21:46We didn't have to want to go back and then do it again,
21:47do it again, whatever.
21:48So we're looking at the option of using that.
21:50It looks like it's going to fit.
21:52It looks very nice in there.
21:53I think minor modification required,
21:56but we're on the right track.
21:59OK, Alex, so you're driving down Fagoria Street,
22:02dodging old motorhomes.
22:03OK.
22:03Hard left.
22:04Stop.
22:06Hard right.
22:06OK.
22:08Hard left.
22:10Stop.
22:10There's a curb.
22:11Darn.
22:11OK, right there.
22:12That's it.
22:13Go a little bit more, a little bit more,
22:14a little bit more, and stop.
22:16All right.
22:17So that's the spot right there that it will stop the steering.
22:20And as I look, the steering wheel is just barely brushing
22:24the fiberglass inner wheel well.
22:26So that is the spot that it's supposed to be.
22:28I feel good about that.
22:29So that was a good time, laying under the car upside down.
22:38We did get the trans-cross member in.
22:40The transmission, the shifter, all that is centered
22:43and where it should be.
22:44Generally, we're like, well, I hope there's
22:45enough room in the front.
22:46We went straight to the back, bolted that stuff up,
22:49and then just sort of moved it around until it was
22:52where it needed to be.
22:53That's a fact, which leads us to the point
22:55that we are in a really big moment where now our engine
22:58and transmission can suspend itself in our C1 56 Corvette.
23:03We have made a wolf's and sheep closing.
23:05We have something that we're going to ruin our parade
23:07rather than have a parade car because we have every intention
23:10of smoking the tires.
23:12So it is finally the point where we get to take this cherry picker
23:17off of this and see our engine and transmission hanging
23:20on its own.
23:21From there, we have lots of work.
23:22We get to wire the holly.
23:23We get to put a Ford 9-inch in the back.
23:26And we are actually pretty close to seeing this thing in motion.
23:29So lots of good stuff coming up.
23:31Are you ready to do it?
23:33Oh, yeah.
23:33Dun-dun-dun-dun!
23:37You have been set free.
23:38This thing is standalone.
23:41That's actually nice.
23:42It fits in there nicely.
23:43Hello.
23:44Whoa, that's crazy.
23:46I was just wiping small amounts of debris and dust
23:48off of these amazing heads.
23:51So this gives kind of an old school feel.
23:53The 2x4, even Holly says it's not quite as popular.
23:56I think it's going to be pretty neat.
23:57Basically, this is just like having two throttle bodies.
24:01Right.
24:01You still have eight injectors, one injector for each one.
24:04And you have a throttle plate for each hole.
24:06Perfect.
24:07Once we get the air cleaner set up on there,
24:09it's going to also look really nice.
24:10And a big old gold velocity stacks
24:12with a bug catcher in the front.
24:14That defeats the purpose.
24:17Good point.
24:18OK, so if you recall, just the other day,
24:22I did go ahead and fabricate these lines
24:24and put all the fittings on the lines from the fuel pump
24:28to the front, including the regulator,
24:30which is mounted right here with the gauge on it.
24:32And let's just see if I was guessing.
24:36I mean, carefully calculating the location of the fuel rails.
24:40So this is going to go right here.
24:44There will be a block off plate on the firewall right here.
24:47This will then go on a bracket and get mounted right there.
24:49We're going to whip up one more line right now
24:50that will go from here directly over to there.
24:54Oh, my goodness.
24:55This is going to look amazing.
24:57All right, we have done a lot of work to our 56 Corvette.
25:00And we've put a lot of good parts.
25:01We have our LS3 crate engine that
25:03has an American powertrain Tremec five-speed behind it.
25:07But that means that we cannot stop short at the rear end.
25:10So right now, it just has the stock 56 Corvette rear end in it.
25:13I can't say enough about quick performance.
25:15So they got us set up with their Ford nine-inch housing.
25:18We had it powder-coated, nice and shiny black to match our car.
25:21With a third member with 370 gears, they got us set up with axles.
25:24So basically, it is supposed to just bolt right in.
25:27It's the stock width of our 56 Corvette.
25:29So that's coming up.
25:30We have our Holley to wire up.
25:31We have some hoses to connect, shifter to install.
25:34Then we're about to fire it up and absolutely roast the tires
25:38off of this very classy C1 vent.
25:44OK.
25:45We are so close to getting our 56 Corvette running into a burn pit near us.
25:50You're getting ready to work on exhaust right here?
25:53I am exhausted.
25:54Not yet, but you will be.
25:56Yep.
25:56Absolutely true.
25:57Yeah.
25:57So we have exhaust coming up.
25:58And then the biggest and last component to finish this version of our build out
26:04is that we are swapping in a Quick Performance 9-inch.
26:07So while Lucky works on exhaust, I'm going to go ahead and start getting this dropped down.
26:11Right on time.
26:12He's going up there.
26:13I'm going to be back here.
26:15And we're making good progress.
26:17Hey, have you apologized to this tire yet?
26:19No.
26:19You should.
26:20It's to come.
26:31So Quick Performance actually sent us everything
26:33that we need to put this back together back here,
26:36including drum brakes.
26:37Couple more nuts to take off.
26:39Lower this down onto the stands.
26:41Then wrangle it out the side and get ready to put the new one in.
26:46One way to do it.
26:48Lucky!
26:49Hello.
26:50I need two eyes back here while I'm up there,
26:53because we are unlevel.
26:54Why'd you flip it all over?
26:55I'm going to fight you.
26:58Come on.
26:58Slide it over.
27:03I have to say I love new parts.
27:07OK, I'm going to see if I can lift this by myself.
27:11Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:13So housing's in.
27:30It looks good.
27:31Check the tightness by hand in just a second.
27:33But, say it fits.
27:44My right foot is stomping.
27:50Hi there.
27:51OK.
27:52OK.
27:52OK, so when you get a new housing,
27:54got to put studs in.
27:55And they don't always, you know, if they're just going
27:57just a little bit different direction,
28:00then it makes it a little bit hard initially to put this on,
28:02but not a big deal.
28:03You grab your jack.
28:05You grab your muscles.
28:07Another stud.
28:09And then you line it up.
28:11Watch my digits.
28:14Going right in.
28:15Yeah, it's going.
28:15Going right in.
28:17Third member is installed.
28:19You might have noticed that this doesn't have a gasket.
28:21Quake Performance recommends just to run RTV instead of a gasket.
28:24So just put some sealer on there, bolt this up, torque it down.
28:28We'll make sure the studs are all seated.
28:29Then it's going to be axle time and then brake time.
28:33All right, so axle seals are in.
28:35Lucky helped me with that.
28:36Loaded backing plates.
28:37Not mad at that.
28:38Thank you, Quake, for sending those over, too.
28:41We have had a lot of cars with drum brakes lately,
28:44and I'm OK not having to do all that assembly.
28:47OK.
28:48So these go on, we'll put axles in,
28:50and then we're going to have a nine inch sooner
28:52rather than later.
28:5431 spline, goodness.
28:55Poof.
28:56In the future, we are going to do disc brakes all the way around.
28:59Right now, it still has drum brakes in the front,
29:01so you can't do a disc brake in the rear.
29:07Whoa!
29:08What?
29:09I had a dream that I was a horse.
29:11I said, whoa!
29:14Rear end housing is in.
29:15Third member is in.
29:17We have axles in.
29:18Backing plates in.
29:20Emergency cables hooked up.
29:21The only thing left is running the brake line back here,
29:25connecting that up, put the drums on, bleed the brakes.
29:28Easy, quick, good, quick.
29:30Get it?
29:31Quick upgrade.
29:31And then it's on to wiring, shifter, startup.
29:39I've gone ahead and pulled the harness.
29:40We've punched the hole through the tunnel.
29:42It's in a low position that is low enough you can't see from outside,
29:47like from the engine bay, because you don't want a big old harness
29:49coming right through the middle of the firewall.
29:51But it's in a good position where it's going to dip out,
29:53go lay right on top of the transmission,
29:55go right up to the fuel injection,
29:56be inconspicuous, yet functional, like myself.
30:14Shifter's in.
30:15This is another piece from American Powertrain to fit with this swap.
30:19We actually pulled the cover off and looked at it.
30:21And it's basically just a piece that steps the shifter over to the side
30:25and just kind of controls it from over here,
30:26even though the linkage is right in the center.
30:28So it's a really nice upgrade if you have one of these cars.
30:30That way you don't have to cut your car up.
30:32It can stay in stock location.
30:33Pretty nice.
30:34So it is in.
30:35It is functioning.
30:37At some point, once the carpet and everything gets changed,
30:39this needs to be more secured down.
30:41But you get the gist.
30:43I am just doing this one short little bar with himes on either side.
30:47And I want to see where we're going to cut the stock linkage.
30:50Luckily, there's plenty enough to trim here.
30:53If we move this down a little bit,
30:54it's going to give us a lot more throw,
30:56put the pedal in a more comfortable position,
30:58and give us plenty of room for an air cleaner.
31:02Gas pedal rod has been shortened up by about an inch.
31:05Shall we give it a test?
31:06We shall.
31:10That actually feels really good.
31:11It's not too hard to push, and it feels like it's actually got travel now
31:16because it didn't have travel.
31:17It's a little more progressive, too.
31:18Yeah.
31:19I pushed it down all the way past the little pivot point.
31:21OK.
31:22I like that.
31:23All right.
31:23So it steers?
31:24Yep.
31:25Gas pedal works?
31:26Yep.
31:27You know what?
31:27Those are the two things that we really need to make power.
31:30Fuel pump?
31:32Yeah.
31:33We're going to hotwire that.
31:34Gas tank's in.
31:35There's gas in the gas tank.
31:36The battery's in.
31:37We have voltage.
31:37It will crank over.
31:38Spark plug wires, fluids of the one, two, three.
31:42Boards?
31:43Coolant.
31:43Uh-huh.
31:44And I think we could crank this thing over and upset our neighbors.
31:47I think that's a great idea.
31:48You know what?
31:49That's what donuts are for.
31:50We can buy their forgiveness.
31:53Screen comes to life.
31:55I can't see it.
31:56Not yet.
31:57Yes, it is now.
31:57OK.
31:58The lights are on the ECU.
32:00OK.
32:01You got throttle?
32:02Yep.
32:08That's how you do it right there.
32:09That's good.
32:10So when we first started it, it idled high, 800, 1,000 RPM, maybe 1200, because it's designed
32:19to do that through the coolant temp sensor.
32:21And now it's gone to 550 RPM, which is where we set it to idle.
32:25A couple of things.
32:26We have two throttle bodies, so it sounds a little crazy, like the blow dryer's on, because
32:31only one idle air control motor is controlling the actual idle.
32:35The other one's wide open, so we're going to go in and things we're going to learn as
32:38we go along.
32:39We're going to go in and close that front IAC motor.
32:41All right.
32:42So it starts up.
32:44It's not refined.
32:45It is not refined.
32:46But that's OK.
32:47For a first start, that's great.
32:48Yeah.
32:49So before we really, like, lay onto it and rev it up and all that, plus it's a brand new
32:53motor, I'd love to plug an actual laptop up and see what's going on vital-wise.
32:57We have a couple more sensors we need to hook up, like oil pressure transducer and fuel pressure
33:02transducer.
33:03Mm-hmm.
33:04Yeah, our drive shaft's in.
33:05It's ordered.
33:06It should be here.
33:07Right.
33:08We have to put a door back on, put seats.
33:09You know, very minor stuff.
33:10Right.
33:11Just wrapping the car up.
33:12But overall, we did a lot of work this week.
33:13Yeah, compared to the way this thing showed up in the beginning of the week, it wasn't
33:16even on life support.
33:17It was actually on the donor list.
33:19Oh, it was a flat liner.
33:20It was on the transplant list.
33:21Absolute flat liner.
33:22It had no engine.
33:23It had no transmission.
33:25Yeah.
33:26I have to say, really impressed with how all of this swap went together.
33:29All the companies that we worked with on this, not in a salesy way, but I highly recommend
33:33anybody that we worked with on this for you guys to check out, because this was the easiest
33:38swap that we've done in a long time.
33:42Technically, from Boneyard to Streetable, because we could have this completely drivable at
33:49the end of the day.
33:50Plus one door.
33:51Yeah.
33:52Four or five days, you're driving on the street.
33:54We just have a few things to do, and then as soon as it's done, we will see you guys
33:58at the burn pit.
33:59The tires will hopefully be begging for mercy, and our LS3 will be screaming, and so will
34:05Lucky.
34:06That is a strong point right there.
34:12So while C1 Corvettes were originally introduced as muscle cars and performance, they have
34:22now become more of a collector car, a Sunday cruiser, if you will, something that you don't
34:27take out and just hammer and beat on.
34:30However, we're doing exactly that.
34:32Absolutely.
34:33You would never see this car on the left lane of the freeway driving it up at the speed limit.
34:39It's always in the right or on the coast, polished and shiny.
34:42Now that's all about the change.
34:44Now while there are some exceptions, and there are some C1 Corvettes out there that are performance,
34:49for the most part, you don't think of them like that.
34:51You think of them as that Sunday cruiser.
34:53So we are joining that side of the party.
34:56We ordered up a LS3 crate engine, which C6 Corvettes or Camaros at the time had, and we
35:02stuck it in this, which is a lot more power to car, I have to say.
35:06Absolutely.
35:07The engine management is all Holley.
35:09It's not one four-barrel.
35:10It's two four-barrels.
35:11Because where you can put one, you can generally put another one, right?
35:14Yeah.
35:15And then that feeds an American Powertrain transmission, which is going to handle all
35:18the horsepower this thing can make.
35:19And then we had to make sure we could get all that power to the ground.
35:22So we put a quick performance nine-inch in the back.
35:24That's going to be a great recipe for lots of tire smoke.
35:28See, I didn't say one tire fire, but a lot of tire smoke.
35:31You mean fire.
35:32Whatever floats your boat.
35:33All right.
35:34So the weak link is going to be the rear wheels.
35:37Hopefully.
35:38Cool.
35:39I don't know how straight this car is going to go.
35:40We actually have not test-driven this car before.
35:42Because if you remember, it came in with an engine out.
35:45And since then, we haven't taken it out and cruised it around.
35:48Right.
35:49The other thing, too, is we have a drag strip right there.
35:51So we are here.
35:52We are at Irwindale, but we are not at the drag strip this time.
35:55Today, we're going to be doing something different than we normally do here.
35:58We need to drive it around a little bit, but once again, I don't know how confident I am with it going straight.
36:02That's a lot of straight.
36:03I do know it'll do a circle.
36:04Anything will do a circle.
36:05Are you a salesman?
36:06Because that's a great sales pit.
36:07Come on down to Circle Land.
36:08We're giving them away.
36:09By giving them away, we mean we have donuts calling our name right after we go drive through the pits and get a little bit of heat in this rear end, get a little bit of feel for the car.
36:18And then this is going into a burn pit, so that way it can see it's a whole new lifestyle of high horsepower and good times in a place that doesn't necessarily belong.
36:36We have brakes?
36:37We have one left brake.
36:39One.
36:40One left front brake.
36:41Well, check this again here.
36:44Donuts will be to the left.
36:45Yeah.
36:46Is the heater on for you?
36:47It's very much so on.
36:48The electric fans just came on, so it's sucking all the hot air out of the radiator and blowing it over the headers to make it a little warmer and then blowing it through the 14 inch by 12 inch hole in the firewall directly on Alex's legs.
37:10Yeah, right into the face.
37:14I actually really like it though.
37:16Yeah, it doesn't suck.
37:17Are you prepping?
37:18I am.
37:19This is a barrel racing right now.
37:22We are so going to get kicked out.
37:29All right, we're over in the burn pits.
37:31So this is going to be really interesting.
37:33If you guys know how this works, lucky it'll be gas brake, clutch, all of that at the same time.
37:38And something about that's a little sketch.
37:40The power to the car, little sketch.
37:42The fact that the walls are like this in a box and have a lot of consequences, a little sketch.
37:47And if there's one thing I've learned at Hot Rod Garage is that if you were driving when it broke, think you're at fault.
37:55And I don't want to be at fault.
37:57I'm a little bit more in control.
37:59This is chaos.
38:00However, lucky is coming up next.
38:03We'll see how he does.
38:15All right, it is time.
38:16We are bringing our C1 Corvette with an LS3 crate engine to the burn pit.
38:21We're bringing our Sunday cruiser into the middle of chaos.
38:24Lucky is driving.
38:25Could be good.
38:26Could be bad.
38:27We've only got a really short test drive.
38:29We have some sketchy brakes.
38:30But I have confidence.
38:31He'll do that.
38:32Here he is.
38:38Oh, easy there.
38:39Easy there.
38:40Come on, high up him up.
38:41High up him up.
38:42Yeah.
39:12He's absolutely killing it.
39:17This is right up his alley.
39:19He loves Swoog and Murdoch.
39:21That is both Sunday Cruises.
39:24That is the chaos on the parade.
39:27And that's exactly what we wanted.
39:29I'm so proud of him.
39:30Look at him making clouds.
39:39Hello. That was awesome.
39:40That was cool, huh?
39:41That did so good.
39:42Definitely was a good time right there, for sure.
39:45It was one of those where, like, as you were entering,
39:47like, it looked so good because it had, like,
39:49you had tire smoke.
39:50But then, like, initially it turned.
39:51I'm like, oh, no, no, no, no.
39:52And then they're like, cheer him on.
39:54And then you're just like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
39:56Professional red spot driver?
39:58Go on.
39:59Keep telling me.
40:00This is where I stopped complimenting him.
40:02Actually, you know what?
40:03I'm not joking.
40:04We should look at the left rear quarter panel.
40:08Seriously.
40:09Oh, my gosh.
40:10Really?
40:11Yeah, there's a huge scratch.
40:12I hit the wall.
40:13So, is that really?
40:14Oh, okay.
40:15When I first came in and started to kick around,
40:16and I started to creep out, I was just like, well,
40:17it shouldn't be turning this much right now.
40:18And then I felt a little bump.
40:19No, it was something in the track.
40:20All right, cool.
40:21But I had you, right?
40:22Oh, you did?
40:23I was just like, meh.
40:24No, it was good.
40:25Okay.
40:26Okay.
40:27We did figure out, as good as it performed, it does need some upgrades.
40:29It does.
40:30We didn't break anything.
40:31We don't need to replace anything that we may be damaged here.
40:33I don't think this is the last time that this thing is going to get the beans.
40:35No, we need brakes, cooling system, suspension, all that good stuff.
40:36Steering.
40:37Steering is a little sketchy.
40:38All that good stuff.
40:39This still has just stock 1956 steering mechanism on here.
40:42It's like, oh, let's go.
40:43I'm gonna do something in the track.
40:44Yeah, I'm gonna do something in the track.
40:45All right, cool.
40:46But I had you, right?
40:47Oh, you did?
40:48I was just like, meh.
40:49No, it was good.
40:50Okay.
40:51Okay.
40:52Okay.
40:53We did figure out, as good as it performed, it does need some upgrades.
40:54It does.
40:55We didn't break anything.
40:56We don't need to replace anything that we may be damaged here.
40:57I don't think this is the last time that this thing is going to get the beans.
40:58Steering is a little sketchy.
40:59All that good stuff.
41:00This still has just stock 1956 steering mechanism on here.
41:05Yeah.
41:06So there's plenty to upgrade, but I can say that we definitely have a really good base to start from now.
41:11Absolutely.
41:12And I believe there's some more stuff for this car.
41:14There's other stuff available.
41:16There's some stuff for this car.
41:17I don't know.
41:18Well, let's put this thing away and do something else.
41:20Yeah, I say, put it up while it's still happy and running.
41:23We'll do our upgrades.
41:24But I think we can go watch some of that action over there.
41:27What do the kids say?
41:28I don't know.
41:29We're going to watch them fools?
41:30Watch them.
41:31We're going to go watch them fools with some tire smoke.
41:34Oh, wait.
41:35Am I going to park this thing?
41:36Hold on.
41:37You can't leave it here.
41:38All right.
41:39I'm good.
41:40This guy.
41:43All right.
41:44So I'd say that was a success for our Corvettes.
41:47I am a professional donut hole.
41:50Donut hole.
41:51You are a professional donut.
41:53I'm a professional donut connoisseur.
41:56I'm a donut artist.
41:57Hold on.
41:58I'm a donut artist.
41:59That's fair.
42:00All right.
42:01So we have plenty to do to it.
42:03But I would say what we have got was very successful.
42:06So we have a couple of people to thank.
42:08Holly.
42:09Absolutely, Holly.
42:10Quick Performance.
42:11American Powertrain.
42:12American Powertrain.
42:13Mac at Ganderin Chevrolet.
42:14Yeah.
42:15Yeah.
42:16And Irwindale.
42:17Irwindale Speedway.
42:18Beautiful Irwindale, California.
42:19That's here.
42:20All right.
42:21It's very chaotic.
42:22We're clawing in a day.
42:24We'll have the Corvettes back at some point.
42:26That leads me to ask, do you have social media?
42:29I do have social media.
42:30Thank you so much for asking.
42:31You're welcome.
42:32I'm Mobile Tech Lugby on all the platforms.
42:34Do you have social media?
42:35I do.
42:36I'm Holly Sailor Racing.
42:37And we are Hot Rock Rock.
42:38Yes, we are.
42:39And Hot Rock Rock, thanks for buying that vent.
42:41Big, big mistake.
