00:00On this episode of Hot Rod Garage, both of these cars got professionally painted.
00:04Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage, I'm Alex Taylor and this is Lucky Costa.
00:33Hello.
00:34Where are we?
00:35We're in the cut.
00:36Actually, we're cut adjacent.
00:38Okay, so there's one thing that Least Money, our 72 Nova and the Typhoon have in common.
00:44I'm going to go with the amazing appearance.
00:48It's the fact that they both need paint.
00:51They both do need paint.
00:53In the pursuit of doing stuff right on this, we're actually sending this one off to get paintwork done professionally.
00:58It's going to be nice.
00:59It's going to be pretty.
01:00We're sending it out to get it painted.
01:01Nice.
01:02And do you remember professional race car driver?
01:05I am.
01:06We're going to be professional painters.
01:08Oh, I checked my resume.
01:09I did not see that on there.
01:11Ah, funny because I wrote it on there this morning.
01:13Really?
01:14Yeah.
01:15Pencil or pen?
01:16Sharpie, actually.
01:17That's a good marker.
01:18So we're going to try our hand at paint and body on the Typhoon.
01:22The whole idea here is to find out how much money we can save by doing it ourselves and see if the effort that's involved is worth the savings.
01:29Maybe you have a car at home.
01:30You and your buddies want to get together one weekend and paint your car over a long weekend.
01:34We're going to do that same thing and do the best paint job that we can with the little bit of time that we have.
01:40What she said, for sure.
01:42Now, I have such high hopes for this.
01:44We're going to actually do it proper with jamming the car, meaning that we're going to paint all the door jams so you don't open whatever color we go with and see black door jams and all that.
01:52So it's a color change.
01:53We're doing a full color change.
01:54Okay.
01:55So in an attempt to do that correctly, we've taken the car pretty much all the way apart, minus a few pieces, and then we're going to sand it all, then seal it with a sealing primer for a nice base to work from.
02:06Then we're going to spread filler, sand filler, and then once it's all flat and smooth to our liking, we're going to spray it with a sanding primer and then sand some more for an even smoother finish.
02:14Once that's all done, we're going to seal it again, then we're finally going to get to lay the color down.
02:19Even though we have a brand new shop, they were frowning on the whole idea of us blowing it up with Bondo dirt and overspray.
02:25By they, I meant us.
02:27Yeah, us. We'd have to clean it.
02:28Yeah.
02:29We're going to be doing a lot of it out here in the vacant parking lot. I'm okay with it.
02:32Now, don't come at us, because there's like a hundred ways to get this job done, and everybody's got different opinions, but...
02:39For every five tips we give you on how to do it, we're going to give you six tips on what not to do.
02:44Maybe, maybe, but we're going to give you reasons why we're choosing to do the methods that we're choosing to do, and then depending on how it looks at the end, we'll either cut and buff or start assembling it.
02:55So it's a four-day auto spa.
02:57Yeah.
02:58All right, so we're going to get started on this. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and then later in the week, this one is going to get sent off, and it's going to get a full cosmetic treatment.
03:07To other professionals.
03:08We're going to compare the paint jobs, take them on a cruise up to Bob's Big Boy to show off our work, and we're going to check out the other paint jobs and what they might have cost.
03:17Best place, carcass and starch.
03:19Yeah, you know what I was thinking? It's kind of like us versus them.
03:22Versus who? A legitimate paint and body shop?
03:25Yeah.
03:26Or us against Bob's Big Boy?
03:27No, us against the paint and body shop.
03:29Because us versus a burger, me versus a burger, I come out on top every time.
03:33Well, then, I mean, just carry that attitude right on into the paint job.
03:40So we just got done unloading everything out of the back of the Typhoon. By everything, I mean doors, glass, moldings, trim, cladding.
03:48This is all the side cladding for the car. Rear pieces, as you can see, these are like the bumper extensions that go on the side.
03:55This is supposed to be three and a half feet longer. We're sending stuff out to Sport Machines.
03:59They have a procedure over there where they have a mold of some sort that puts these things back together.
04:04You put the original stuff in there, it fuses them back together, makes them like new, makes them pliable.
04:08It takes care of stuff like this, which I'm interested to see that.
04:12So if you have a project at home that you're considering having painted, do yourself a favor.
04:17And I'll do the body shop a favor, too. Take it apart. Take as much off as you can.
04:21Take off the bumpers, take off all the molding that goes around the doors, the rubber that goes around the windows.
04:26It's not very difficult. Take off the rear view mirrors, the lenses, all that stuff.
04:30You take it apart, save yourself some money, get a good job. They'll appreciate it. You'll appreciate it.
04:36First thing on the list, we're going to sand all of the panels to create a textured and clean surface for our first coat of epoxy primer to bond to.
04:44We're going to start with an 80 grit sandpaper, which means it's a little bit more coarse.
04:48So the lower the number, 30, 40, 50, that's more of a grit and more sharpness than the higher the number.
04:55So we're going to start with an 80, which will knock some of the rough stuff down.
04:58I'm going to start with a DA. Some people think that Bondo has to go direct to metal.
05:03So Bondo is a DTM, direct to metal, that's what they call it, which that would be a mechanical bond
05:10where the Bondo is actually going in and gripping to like a, say you ground it down with 36 grit.
05:15It's got something to grab to.
05:17There's also the school of thought that you put Bondo over a epoxy primer or etching primer or something like a paint as a base.
05:26And that's the way that we're going to do it. So that's called a chemical bond.
05:30We're not actually going to primer it. We're going to use our paint here as kind of that base.
05:34The Bondo is going to use the acid that's in it to melt into, for lack of better terms, melt into the base that we have here.
05:44All right, we got a lot of the 80 grit pass done.
05:48We have a lot more of this process, the same thing, different grit.
05:52We won't bore you guys. After this, we're going to be sealer, Bondo, primer.
05:58It's going to be a lot of fun.
05:59So much fun.
06:04All right, you know where we're going?
06:08I do.
06:09We're in the South Bay.
06:10Yes.
06:11And we're going to get paint.
06:13Paint.
06:14South Bay paint.
06:15South Bay paint.
06:16Oh, what is it?
06:17You know, we're missing a couple more things than paint.
06:20While we are doing this in five days, we snuck in while our camera crew made it want to sneak in last night.
06:27And we got a head on some parts.
06:29Exactly.
06:30All the doors have been prepped on the outside and they're sealed.
06:33Yep.
06:34The tailgate is sealed.
06:35Those are all flat panels.
06:36There's not a lot of glory in any of those.
06:37I got one word for the roof.
06:39Cowabunga.
06:41Amazing waves up there.
06:48Unfortunately, this car has had some hands on it.
06:52It's got I don't know how many different types of paint.
06:54So sealer is going to be important.
06:56Yeah.
06:57And then primer.
06:58High build primer.
06:59Yep.
07:00And then the fun part.
07:01Yeah.
07:02So you'll notice a couple parts of the car have already been sealer primered.
07:06But we have plenty of sealer primer to shoot and then Bondo and then sanding primer.
07:11And we're going to do that like a whole bunch.
07:13All right.
07:14You ready to go?
07:15Yeah.
07:16All right, let's go.
07:17Okay.
07:18We got the supplies.
07:19Now we get the fun.
07:20Well, we made it back, huh, Alex?
07:21We made it back.
07:22If you're doing something like this at home, one of the biggest parts is the prep.
07:26Not only with just sanding, but also as far as masking, how you mask, the quality of your
07:31materials, it's not all the same.
07:33Masking allows you to only get paint where you want to get paint.
07:36Or like what we're doing right now, it's to keep sanding dust out of the interior so
07:40that way we can minimize cleanup work later.
07:43I always thought spray and pray was bring out the nitrous oxide, put in a big pill, push
07:47the button and pray.
07:49Apparently it's something else to body and paint, people.
07:52I'm sure I'll get it by the end of this episode.
07:54Either way, what we've ended up doing is doing a bunch of body work, prepping the typhoon,
07:59getting it ready for some paint.
08:01Some of the fun part of doing that, and I'm using the term fun loosely here, is running
08:06air hoses and making fittings and making sure you're not spraying water with the paint.
08:10There is a small problem of condensation.
08:12If you have a compressor really close to where you're actually using the gun, the air coming
08:16out of that tank as it's getting pressurized creates a certain amount of heat.
08:20There's condensation, there's moisture in it.
08:22You need a way to filter that, all the debris and contaminants out of it, and prevent it from
08:28spraying water, which I'm sure you've seen if you used an air hose close to where you're
08:32standing where the compressor is and you're spraying the dirt or something.
08:35You'll see moisture coming out.
08:36There's a thing called a water trap and air dryer, and that's exactly what we have here.
08:40All compacted into one thing, including a regulator, which is important.
08:43We got this one for less than 200 bucks online.
08:46I put a couple of fittings on either side, so we can use a conventional air hose into this
08:50side and then use a shorter air hose, just plug it right into this.
08:53But you don't want it laying down, you want it standing up.
08:55So I might build a little stand for it.
08:57I believe these hoses actually supposed to go to a sensor that determines how much moisture
09:01is in there and open them automatically.
09:03I will be the sensor.
09:04When I see the filter starting to get full, I will just drain the water myself.
09:08However, I don't think we have the equipment here.
09:12Fortunately enough, I do have some old air ride stuff.
09:15I'm just going to heat the end of it, close it off, and this will be the valve.
09:19I think it's good.
09:21Let's put some air in there and see if it works.
09:27Okay.
09:28The only thing leaking is our hose.
09:31Let me put that in a no-leak position.
09:33Theme.
09:57now when you're spraying paint that paint is coming out with air pressure behind it so make
10:09sure you get all those nooks and crannies where dirt may be hiding because it will find its way
10:12into your paint job so we're going to blow it all off and then we're going to go through and wipe
10:17it down with wax and grease remover so basically it gets any oils from your fingers oils that may
10:21be on the car just any residue that may be on there that would affect the paint job it's going
10:26to get that off if we were doing the final paint we'd go through with the tack cloth we're not doing
10:30that right now we'll show you that at a later point and now we finally get to spray something
10:35an epoxy primer that seals in all of the layers of old paint and body work and creates a fresh
10:40uniform surface for all of the upcoming work to build off of so for our epoxy primer here we have
10:47ew we have ew so for our epoxy primer here we have ew did i do that right yeah i'm learning now so this
10:55is arkansas fiberglass training we have ew instructions say that we're going to go one to
11:03one mixing these cups are cool because they're like speed mixing so it's like if one to one or
11:08like our other stuff is one to four or four to one four to one four to one so you can do the
11:13different quantities here so we could go down here one and if you go to the other one that would be
11:18one to one with a smaller quantity but we want a lot so we're going to do five five we're going in deep
11:24up you ready to make a mess count me in can you see it all right and the mess and the mess has begun
11:31all right now we're going to mix the primer and the activator up so then we put a strainer in
11:41to get any of the chunks out let's just go to just over five that's all of it
11:49so we have acetone slash paint center look he's going to run it through the gun get a spray pattern
11:53figured out also that way it's not just shooting yeah it's a new gun might have some cardboard in
11:58it the patterns are clean and crisp if you tighten the pattern all the way down you know a nice little
12:04bullet then you can adjust the amount of material versus air turn the air pressure up you were able
12:10to blend between material and air turn it down and then open the fan up able to shoot a lot of material
12:15or no material at all so i think it's going to work good
12:17so today was a day
12:44we did a thing today basically where we have it right now is we've got an epoxy primer
12:50on this two coats correct at least two coats yeah three coats in some spots we're going to let it
12:56dry overnight and we'll be back bright and early hoping that we have everything we need ready yeah high
13:04five
13:04our goal today is to complete the body filler step of the process this is a really important step
13:19because getting the body panel straight and smooth will not only make the sanding primer step tomorrow
13:24much easier but it will also make the overall results way better so what i'm getting ready to do this morning
13:30is just hit it with a longboard so this is a nice flat surface so you can see highs and lows as you
13:35go over it i've sprayed a guide coat i've just black paint on it and i'm just going to use that so that
13:42way i can see where the highs and lows are yeah the gray's okay but the black didn't dry all the way
13:48unfortunately we had some bad chemical reactions to what we sprayed last night the epoxy primer
13:55just did not harden properly on some spots on the doors and that forced us to strip the doors back
14:00down and re-spray them today so we still have one door that needs to be hung and sprayed but we're kind
14:05of a little bit out of room so we're a little behind schedule on these pieces we'll have to wait to do
14:12body filler on these in the morning but our body over there is ready to start the body work process
14:18so one of the things about painting is you're basically juggling a whole lot of moving parts
14:24at different stages at one time so you just got to be able to maximize your time the best you can
14:29for the situations that present themselves but we have officially entered the next phase of our project
14:34sanding the epoxy primer which will get it ready for whatever needs to stick to it either bondo or
14:39sanding primer or in our case both okay so i've used the da and some 180 to buzz off sort of the
14:46surface of all the sealer that we put on the car we weren't really concerned about the texture that
14:52we were shooting knowing that we're going to be knocking it down after this there'll be body work
14:55and then we're going to put the high build primer on it so some things are fun and then some things are
15:00this so right here when we started sanding i was able to actually pull sheets of our epoxy primer off
15:08you could see under it the layer below it had gummed up and it was nasty and it was not going
15:13to stick so long story short went ahead and took this down to bare metal so i'm going to get this
15:18nice and sanded down with a good 80 grit get it as close as i can get it get all the nasty gunk off for
15:24the most part it is and we're going to modify adapt and overcome our situation so we have our body filler
15:32right here and then we have our hardener in this tube kind of like seasoning in the kitchen you
15:36know but for real the more you put the faster it kicks by kick i mean harden at some point bondo gets
15:43to the point that you can't work with it so i'm going to start here so basically what you're doing
15:47is you're taking your hardener and you're kneading it into your bondo bondo's done in layers and you
15:53want to try to catch it to sand it while it's still somewhat soft for lack of better term or else
16:00you're going to have a lot harder time sanding it so you want to get it smooth but you don't want to
16:09wipe all of it off that you're putting on so basically the way it works is you're getting your
16:15low spots but you feather it out as you go meaning less as you move out
16:30so we grabbed the door that was hanging over there we haven't sealed this one yet so it's
16:33kind of okay this is lined up right here and you can see the whole bottom right here is not quite
16:37lined up where it needs to be so what we're doing is using the door as a guide for the spreader
16:42are you a baker in your free time this looks like a fondant
16:58the line looks good now we're going to fillet is that the right word fillet the door free and then
17:05seal the door hang it up i'm just thinking about the fact you've said fillet and fondant in a matter
17:10of 20 minutes yeah yeah hey i'm internationally known
17:17holy moly we actually feel pretty good about where we're at even though we ran into some bumps along
17:23the way we have the body itself ready for sanding primer um and then this is ready for us in the
17:29morning so what we'll be doing is we'll be bouncing back and forth we'll do sanding primer on the body
17:34body work over here back and forth back and forth and by the end of the day tomorrow we'll have
17:40both of these components all of the the groups in sanding primer fresh ready to go with a sealer
17:47primer on it that way the next day we can come in and get color on this so we're making progress slowly but
17:53surely
18:02hi good day how we doing how are you mark how you doing alex nice to meet you nice to meet you my
18:06pleasure you got a nice ride here thank you very much it's a lot of fun this is your parts chaser
18:11yep yep yep i can fit quite a bit back in there parts are pretty quick huh yeah all right i think you
18:16should see see what we're working with are you actually here for the nova are you sure you got
18:22the right address i believe i am all right all right let's take a look and see what we can do
18:27so this is our 72 nova i'm sure i can help tell me your wants and most importantly budget
18:33you know because it's all about what you get for budget this is where you laugh at us i think
18:38our budget is in the eight grand area yeah but that's not just prep and masking that would need
18:47to include paint and clear okay okay you're asking a lot but anything's possible okay so color are you
18:55guys thinking the same color are you thinking a changing color i think this is the original blue
18:59right i don't think it i don't know if it's original but i really am fond of this blue so let's walk
19:05around the car and take a look okay and see what we're looking at because there's things that you
19:09can see and things that you can't see areas like this i mean this is easy stuff this is just clear
19:14coat going bad so that's where when budget comes in how far do we strip certain things like continuing
19:20to walk around the car you know there's a couple of other areas that are going to jump out which is
19:25typical for older cars like this not changing the color up too much and we disassemble everything
19:31what do you think i think judging by what i'm seeing here if you guys are going to do all that
19:36i could probably turn this around in a couple of weeks couple of weeks that's nice that's impressive
19:41a lot of times a lot of shops are not going to be as on top of it as jack's here and get you in
19:47in a couple weeks you did the grand national you guys did a great job in a short period of time so i
19:52have full trust well thank you that you're gonna make it happen we will all right well thanks so much
19:57mark for coming to visit pleasure yeah thank you i appreciate you coming out okay um sorry
20:03no worries just say that look a whole lot of different when we get back cool we appreciate
20:06that well you go have fun in your car we're gonna go have fun i can see that yeah
20:15all right so i'm done with bondo on the body really happy with how it's looking got the nice
20:20body line door jam everything's starting to look good again on this side so i'm gonna go ahead and blow
20:24all of this dust off also even though this is a base and you're gonna be like oh i'm putting
20:30sanding primer over the top of it the smoother you can get this finish the less likely you run
20:36the risk of having those standing marks come through at a later point in time we are at the
20:41point of doing our urethane primer which is what we keep referring to as a sanding primer or a high
20:46build primer so when we say high build very self-explanatory you're going to put a couple layers on and
20:51it's going to build in thickness that way you have some material to take off and get flat this one is
20:56a little bit different mixing ratio than our epoxy primer this is a four to one so we put four parts
21:02of primer to one part activator hardener whatever you want to call it
21:06i would say that was fun and under different circumstances probably would be so let's have
21:21a quick lesson one if your paint looks chalky and dry before you even get it in your cup stop so um we
21:29are using a little bit more budget friendly interpret that how you'd like paint for our
21:37vehicle here i had about that much reducer and i need like that much reducer and uh so anyways i
21:42took reducer which basically is just thinning down your paint you could use acetone you could use lacquer
21:47thinner but reducer is basically usually based on different temperatures so the hotter it is the longer
21:53you need to spray your paint so you get a higher temperature reducer i don't know what mine was it
21:58literally just says reducer on it so i put a reducer in it got the primer thinned down uh i'm gonna go
22:03clean this up it's a mess let that dry for a little bit get ready to sand get ready to prime get ready
22:09to sand get ready to prime get ready to sand get ready to prime
22:28okay man this is fun whose idea was this it is kind of fun you're having fun right
22:35what yeah oh yeah i'm having a blast well we'll be here for quite a while
22:43or at least i will yeah every time i get something done thinking oh okay we're good
22:47she comes behind me that's great do it again sweet here take that all right with that said um now
22:56we're going in with 320 to get the surface even smoother that way our next step the color is going
23:03to be nice and smooth a couple spots where i've sanded through uh i'll do another coat of sanding primer
23:09get it nice and smooth one more time and then it's time for color alex yeah high spots and low spots
23:16yeah this is the low spot of this episode
23:28so we have a couple colors to test here we've tried to pick colors that have a little bit of depth
23:32to them we don't want a metallic or a dark dark color yeah cool thing about the spray can is they're
23:38actually mix the paint it's not just off off the shelf rattle can paint mix it they put it in the
23:44can and then they pressurize it so we can actually do a fan pattern and very much like mixing it
23:49yourself and we want to go single stage paint meaning we don't have to put a clear coat on this when
23:54it's all said and done and you'll see what we're going to spray it on when we get there but that way
23:58you can see what the color looks like on the like different lines right right and uh yeah so with
24:03that said let's go you ready yeah just throw that in your frunk we're going to shake that paint as we
24:11drive back so we went through a large swatch of virtual plethora of paint possibilities right
24:23are you just trying to use my words yeah like dunkel grun and hell grun we looked at some dunkel blau
24:29some hell blau some orange which is pronounced exactly the same in any language some gelb i think
24:35i like this blue better than that blue though i do too this is this is hell blau
24:42hold on you maybe you should go upwind i don't know a lot about painting but i know you're supposed
24:48to be upwind because when the police get there they're like hey who painted the blue
24:59um what do you got there i got green i got orange just fun to say
25:14and now all we have to do is this side
25:19super important part of painting a car is dust control working outside you can expect to get
25:23some dirt in your paint there are a couple options to help manage the dust one of them would be
25:28renting a paint booth shopped around and i saw that there was 125 bucks for three hours it seems super
25:34reasonable the other option would be buy one of those inexpensive inflatable paint booths off the
25:38internet they look like they're going to manage the air there's filtration the one thing we've not
25:42talked about yet is overspray so it's going to keep the overspray in the whole shop down those were
25:46only a thousand bucks we got one of those because we're going to paint more cars in the future if you're
25:50only going to paint one car maybe look in the rent in that local paint booth
25:57okay we may have overdone it a little
26:03okay body work is done as done as it's going to be i think that's like
26:08we're at i don't know probably 20 hours of sanding and bondo time so when i say four days when we say
26:14four days it's four full legit days so now it's time to get ready to unmask this and we're going to
26:21head inside prep it all that good stuff and uh probably remask it hey can you guys settle down out
26:27there huh settle down trying to rest here kidding me this is a private residence you're trespassing
26:48it's actually pretty nice yeah what do you think so 13 feet this is where the back of the car is
27:05right here okay and that's with it all the way nosed up right the purpose of this paint booth and why
27:09we're not just doing it out there is one because we don't want to get paint everywhere outside but
27:14two previous episodes of hot rod garage we have learned this lesson two we want to have a nice
27:20controlled environment here where the stuff out there is not getting in here so that's why we've
27:25dusted the stuff off coming into this we want to keep this nice and sanitary yeah sterile as sterile as
27:31possible all right so now that we have everything in here we did a wipe down on the outside
27:44with the dust now that we're finally starting to be ready to button up the booth doing a final wax
27:50and grease i'm wearing gloves because if your fingerprint oils get on here it could show up in
27:55the paint there's still some low spots that i don't like but um it's pretty flat so on these spots where
28:01you see different color the color isn't so much the big issue that you're going to have when you get to
28:07your paint where you're going to see splotching but the different textures is what can get you so
28:12metal different kind of paint primer all of that so it's really important the next step we're going
28:18to do after this well we're going to tack with a tack cloth after this but after that when we actually
28:23go to spray the sealer that we're going to do is going to help even that out so what i'm going to do
28:29first is take a sealer and go over the spots spot spray those different areas and then do one more
28:35final pass of sealer so that way it'll kind of lock everything in smooth those textures out million
28:41different ways to do it but that's how we're doing it and hopefully that helps you going in
29:11all right it's go time i'd be lying if i didn't say i was nervous i am nervous because it's like the
29:29make or break and i already know i'm going to be too hard on myself so i'm trying to go easy on myself so
29:35the first coat is important because it's forming a tack coat so that means that you want to go with
29:40a medium coat so not too light but not too thick because the first coat is going to be the most
29:46susceptible to runs and then after that you can do a thicker coat because it's not going to run as easy
29:52so i'm new to this i know what i need to do it's just the actual technique i'm going to suit up go in
30:00i'm going to start out in the door jams to try to get a feel for the gun and how the pain's going to lay
30:04down and uh the last week of work comes down to the next three hours
30:30all right so first coat is on and i'm actually really happy about it the paint is laying down
30:39really well and the body work isn't actually that bad so of course there's always more that you can do
30:45but what you see behind us isn't tv magic we legitimately have done this in five days i've had
30:53many late nights of those five days very little sleep this week so it's been a it's been long days but
31:00it's doable where we're going to leave this off is you guys can you guys can go home by home i mean
31:06stay on your couch or wherever you're watching this for a couple more seconds i'm going to be in here
31:11for a couple hours you don't have to watch all this paint it's going to be more spray spray spray
31:15cloud green spray spray spray mixed paint green uh it's not going to really change looks for you guys
31:22until later once we get the cladding on with that said i'm going to go back in get another coat of
31:27paint most likely i'm going to end up laying three coats that way we have a nice thick paint
31:32and we will see you guys in just a second
31:43so it's been a few weeks since you've seen our typhoon sitting in the paint booth after we
31:47finished spraying it and unmasking it we got the cladding back got it painted and then got the typhoon
31:52reassembled we even got some fresh gold wheels to go with our green paint and i have to say it's
31:56looking really good turns out the ventilation in our blow-up booth just did not cut it when we came
32:02to spraying a really heavy coat of paint so unfortunately there's a light coat of overspray
32:07on part of the panels making some of it look a little bit flat while this will all cut and buff at
32:12a later point in time and it's going to shine up really nice this really truly is the results of five
32:18days of paint body work and i have to say pretty impressed with it now we're headed off to jack's
32:23to pick up the nova and then we're going to head over to bob's big boys put both of our paint jobs
32:27on display and then see if we can find any other home sprayed paint jobs there so interestingly enough
32:34we have a fuel pump that has got some kind of problem there's a ghost in the machine at idle it's
32:39not got a lot of fuel pressure it's only got like 25 it's not about 45 to 50. so let's just keep driving
32:45it's just an idle right it drives though when it's driving it's the whole like getting to that part
32:55i think we made it we actually made it i don't know if we'll leave here but we made it here if i
33:02was toast i would be done right now that was a long drive it was very scenic very fun i see something
33:09though that looks a little bit better and uh potentially running a little better
33:22look at this thing do you remember this was red this was a red hood this is pretty heavy on some
33:28sparkles yeah this is a gm like a metallic yeah if you get up real close you can see it it looks really
33:33good so we took ours completely apart yeah and it looks good yeah don't get me wrong looks great
33:39yeah it doesn't look like this and we just threw him the keys yeah i agree i am going to probably
33:45sound partial but i am very partial i actually am very very very proud of our typhoon paint job because
33:51the spray looked freaking so good at 2 a.m after that i started spraying real heavy coats there was so
33:58much overspray that just there was no ventilation in the booth it ended up falling back on it and so
34:03there's some spots that are a little rougher than we'd like so i'm not a fan of that paint booth and
34:08i honestly feel that if we had time i actually feel confident i don't care about what anyone else
34:12says i feel confident in my skills that i could have done a killer paint job with the body work that
34:16we did oh no the body work looks great yeah but the spray doesn't look that bad no the spray looks
34:21great too it's just the overspray is all over it it's not you it's on the paint booth thanks but
34:24yeah note to self you can't paint a car in a bouncy house this definitely though looks really good
34:30it's a lot more complicated paint than what we did and it's also done like in a professional
34:35facility this is this is what they do yeah it looks good so yeah i know how you feel about it
34:39you know how i feel about it yeah let's see how mark feels about it how we doing pretty good what
34:44do you think about it i like it a lot i think it's come a long way it was a piece of cake too right
34:48oh yeah really easy what did you think once you got it here and actually got to take some pieces
34:53apart and look at it you know as always it was more work than we thought they always are yeah but
34:59you guys stepped up and put a bunch of brand new trim on it which really helps i like the color i think
35:05we came real close to what the color was oh it looks great the color is uh one of those seven layers
35:10of blue that it was and this is the one that i liked you somehow read our mind is this like a marina
35:16blue it's close to marina okay it's actually a special mix and this is two stage right yeah base
35:21go clear through so how long did you have in this from the time it showed up to the time we're
35:26taking it three weeks probably do you feel were you guys consistently on it for that time you can't
35:31be you have to get on and off it you got to give it time to cure once you sand it down and prime the
35:35stuff we didn't strip it we strip areas on it and then we primed that i am happy with it yeah glad
35:43you guys like it i like it a lot i was happy to take care of it for you thank you for uh getting it
35:47done though and a short period of time you guys did a killer job thank you very much sir happy to
35:50take care of it for you off to bob's we're gonna try to get to bob's i'll follow you in case you break
35:56down
36:09back in the day bobs bigway was the spot we went to all the bobs with boy it's a total like an in and
36:13out gig you know it's a car culture deal uh this is cool because every single friday from five to
36:18nine this is a car this is a car gig right here and it just so happens that we picked up our nova on
36:23a friday from jack's it's very close by and we thought why don't we pop by check out the car show
36:29do a walk around check out other people's paint jobs then uh chocolate cake cake cake you want to do
36:37a walk you said cake oh no no walk then cake okay yeah lucky walk lucky get cake let's go
36:46gt500 that's not too shabby and lots of nice paint jobs this is a 1964 cj5 kind of looks like our paint
36:54it does kind of look like our paint a little bit
37:01did you see a big truck i did but that would be a great we have one of those in the shop
37:04what mr squishy i'm mr squishy yeah butternut yellow 66. lots of stuff cool chevrolet not too
37:12shabby oh it's actually purple it looks like jaguar yes you have to say it like that jaguar
37:1723 window microbus i like it that is very cool that's nice yeah nice that's for sale that's that's
37:25cool yeah sweet 56 or 55 fork 56 has it right there yeah did you see did you see that green typhoon
37:33over there i've never seen a green typhoon did you see the blue nova you want to go check it out that's
37:36amazing we should go check it out
37:50what do you think about this truck yeah i love a c10 trucks are your thing yeah 71 72. that's a nice
37:55black paint job did you paint your car or did somebody else paint it i painted it so how long do
38:01you have in your restoration here 22 months how much do you have in it do you think probably
38:07three is that accounting for what you would think of as your labor or is that materials
38:12only material only so that's interesting i have to also ask what year did you paint this 2009 wait
38:18what year were you born 97 oh killing me maybe a sensitive subject but how much do you think you
38:25have in paint and body work oh yeah this is good because you sent it to a legit shop that does high
38:29end work yeah um close to 20 plus this is a super expensive color absolutely yeah okay would you say
38:35on yours is it the typical rule of a 50 material cost 50 labor how would you split that it used to be
38:40like 3 500 just for the material for the paint now it's close to six thousand dollars yeah so and that's
38:46on a good day that's not a good day that's not a good day so that kind of changes on an ongoing basis
38:52overall it was a really good time i think we learned a lot i have personally grown up in the paint the
38:59the like show car world my dad that's your thing yeah yeah my dad like i grew up watching paint and
39:03everything and i think based on walking around this car show you can hear a very wide range of prices
39:09there was stuff from super high end to i did it myself let's talk about the cost of hours this over
39:14here which we had no labor costs because we were doing it ourself but we did have to buy all the
39:19supplies all the materials all the tools because we had a paper and a paint booth which was a thousand
39:23dollars on its own we were into it about six thousand dollars total parts materials and equipment
39:29and everything yeah now keep in mind that's lower on the materials list on some a little mid-range
39:34on the actual color paint we did get a little love from south bay paint just because we deal with
39:37them often yeah and we also got pretty good tools to work with so keep that in mind over here though
39:43did you just call me a tool i did not all right but you thought it okay and if the shoe fits
39:50that's all i gotta say all right the nova at jack's because they're our friend over there
39:55is right at nine thousand dollars now keep in mind this car was not stripped all the way down there
40:00was still a lot of work done to it so we just say that to say you could have anywhere from a couple
40:04thousand dollars to 20 30 40 thousand dollars both of these are very reasonable for the results we got
40:11i've seen some crazy expensive paint jobs i mean you get over 100 but we won't go there because
40:15that hurts so if you're going to look at doing a paint job there's a couple things to consider a
40:21don't be scared just do it do you have any artistic skills patience or potential ability to do a good
40:27job i'd like to take those dollar savings and put in the work any day of the week i personally enjoy
40:33doing paint and body i do not we have very different experiences with both yes but we have
40:38two painted cars and two that look a whole lot better than they did when we started this episode
40:44that is very true and i am driving the coolest one in my opinion we have a lot of people thank
40:48sport machine absolutely that's the car i'm driving yes it is shout out the sport machine they
40:53repaired all of the site plattings and they're the only people it's only game in town they look amazing
40:58yeah uh your boys at the paint south bay paint in beautiful gardena california thanks to those guys
41:04they were able to provide us with all the stuff to do our own paint job like literally we walked in
41:09we don't know what we're doing what do we need and they threw a bunch of stuff at us we traded them
41:13straight across for money it worked out great third thing on the list over here on your car while
41:17we're still talking about it mickey thompson it did drive very nice on the way here yeah so since
41:22we got new wheels we had to get new tires mickey thompson always keeps us hooked up good tires
41:27i see what you did there yeah yeah all right uh coming over to the nova big one obviously this
41:32whole bright blue thing going on jacks thank you guys for not only the time that you uh got this
41:37done in and the quality and just being a phone call away a lot of stuff going on mark over at jack
41:42did an amazing job and one final thank you thank you to gear star we didn't put that transmission in
41:46on this episode but every time i get in it immediately think oh cool shifter gear star love you guys
41:52appreciate it i got gear starting this one too you do absolutely yeah good point yeah uh i think
41:57there's a couple more cars to look at some more chocolate cake to be ate yes and uh a road to hit
42:02at a later point in time i'm ready uh do you have social media i do have social media thank you so
42:06much for asking what is it i am mobile tech lucky on all the platforms oh really yes how about you i do
