00:31I'm Alex Taylor and this is Lucky Costa.
00:33Hello.
00:34We have a new project car for Hot Rod Garage.
00:37And by new, it's not just new in the garage
00:39as far as the vehicle goes,
00:40but it's actually a new shape and style
00:42that we haven't had the chance to play with.
00:44So behind me is a 51 Plymouth on a 79 Monte Carlo chassis.
00:49This falls in the group of a lead sled.
00:52Yeah.
00:53I think it checks all the boxes for a lead sled,
00:55except for the sleddy look and the lack of lead.
01:00Everything else I think is on point.
01:02I mean, I still think that it falls in that category though,
01:05because even though it may not be technically done with lead,
01:09it's done with Bondo.
01:10It's the look.
01:11The lead sled is the look.
01:12So, lead sled.
01:13Lead used to refer to the fact that when the car was chopped
01:16and shaved and reshaped, it was filled in with lead.
01:19Now a lot of them use Bondo.
01:20And then the sled part refers to the fact that it's chopped,
01:23lowered, and it looks like it's just kind of gliding down the road.
01:26Yeah, chopped channel, pressed on the ground.
01:28It looked like a sled.
01:29So that's kind of a new something that we haven't had the chance to play with on Hot Rod Garage.
01:33So we found this one pretty much sight unseen other than a couple pictures,
01:37and we picked it up because it was a good price.
01:39And now comes the part where we find all of the quirks and the shortcuts
01:43that most likely come when you buy somebody else's lead sled project.
01:47If a lead sled has drywall screws, tech screws, mystery parts, and awning parts,
01:53yeah, I guess it is some kind of sled.
01:56No, I mean there is some truth to that.
01:58However, I do think though that we could get it lower to fit the sled part.

02:04Absolutely.
02:05So this one's a really good starting point.
02:07It's a decent starting point.
02:09But we do need to address a couple things.
02:11First of all, we need to get it running and driving.
02:13There's a little bit of a wiring issue.
02:15Potentially may need to replace a starter.
02:17And then also something that's kind of important is when the body is attached to the frame.
02:22This one sits on there and it's attached with a couple zip screws, tech screws,
02:27whatever you want to call it.
02:28There are no body mounts.
02:30So we need to address stuff like that and suspension.
02:32And I'm sure once we get it on the lift, we're going to find some other stuff for it.
02:36But that at least gets us going.
02:38So the main goal for now is to get it running and driving, cram Lucky in the car, shut the door,
02:43and then Lucky and I are going on a malt shop trip.
02:45A malt shop trip is a perfect excuse to go for a test drive and see what this car actually needs
02:51to make it a functioning, cool sled sled.

03:08So this cross member here, it's just two pieces of what looks like channel?

03:17Welded together with no other structural reinforcement with one bolt through the middle.

03:26The exhaust held onto said cross member with a very lightweight chain.
03:32This is a good chain for hanging fluorescent lights.

03:36So in the future, if we need to hang some fluorescent lights, we have a little bit of chain here that
03:41we can use that is just amazing.
03:43Fortunately enough, I have no tools.

04:43So we have, I think, a little bit bigger project probably than we initially anticipated.
04:49We can get it running and driving and all that.
04:52But if we want it to be anything nice, we got a lot of work.
04:55Or we can just opt to have fun with this, which may be the better option.

11:17It got hot real quick.
11:18I often say she got some steam in her.
11:21It smelled like it actually had some steam in her.
11:23And then just standing here, we stopped to make sure the fans were working, and they
11:26have not been running.
11:27And then they just randomly kicked on.
11:28We shut the car off and turned the key on to listen for fans.

12:58So on the short list, we need to overhaul all the suspension, lower the seat, close the trunk.
13:09We need to mount the body.
13:11I mean, it's not good.
13:15That's the exact opposite of what we always say.

13:19On the bright side, though, giving credit where it's due.

13:24It's got a long list of stuff that we need to do.
13:26But it has potential.

13:55On the bright side, we made it back of all parts.
13:57Yes, and we have a mental list of just a few things that need to be taken care of.

14:11Everything to do with suspension.

14:23All of this stuff.
14:30So after that little cruise, we learned a couple of things.
14:32First of all, I barely fit in here.
14:35I was potentially going to cut a hole in the headliner so my head fit in because it's rubbing on the headline.
14:40But honestly, I don't know what's going to get in my hair and my age.
14:44I'm just happy to have hair.
14:45So I'm not going to abuse it by sticking it into the mystery zone of the headliner.
14:48So I'm going to address the seat right now.
14:51Pretty simple application.
14:53We're going to take the seat out, set it up on a bench and figure out a way to take about that much out of it and still be comfortable.
15:00This is something you're not going to see every day. Check out the way this seat comes out.
15:03Just like a back seat.
15:11Looks like the base of the seat cushion goes right to the top of the trans tunnel.
15:18So shortening up the frame of the seat may be more difficult than it's worth.
15:22I think I'm going to concentrate on shortening up the actual pillow that we sit on.
15:27I don't know. Let me try it out.
15:33Does this seem normal?
15:35So one of the biggest issues we found with this car is that the body is not actually attached to the frame.
15:41And to fix that, unfortunately, we're going to have to add a little bit of height.
15:44We're going to be adding one inch body bushings with actual mounts.
15:48It's a necessary evil, but it's going to be for the best.
15:51Alright, so these are universal chassis mounts that we got from All Star Performance here.
15:56And basically they come undrilled and extra length.
15:59So that way we can cut them to the length that we need.
16:02So I'm just going to go through and pre-drill them.
16:05I've got them marked.
16:06Pre-drill them.
16:07And then we'll just cut off the length that we don't need.
16:09And then weld this to the frame.
16:11And then we'll be able to actually put our bushings on top of that.
16:14So, gone through.
16:16I've marked them.
16:17Center punched them.
16:18Go drill some holes.
16:19And then we'll cut them to length once we know what that length is.
16:23Okay, so we've jacked the body up off the frame on one side just to make sure that there's a little bit of an air gap in there.
16:28There's my measurement for how thick I want these spacers to be.
16:31I'm just using it as a reference.
16:33We're going to be lifting the body about one inch off of the frame.
16:37And then we have these bushings that will go on these brackets, putting our body right about here.
16:44But we want to be able to find a way to measure between the two mounting surfaces, one of them we have to weld in.
16:49So, I'm just kind of using that as a visual.
16:52I'm going to dice and slice to my content.
16:58All right, so I drilled some holes in our prefabricated chassis brackets, but then I realized after that it needed to be bigger holes.
17:06And so Lucky's like, hey, let me plasma that.
17:09And so he is plasming out holes so that way we can use these.
17:13And then I'm going to saw the bushing so that way it fits under here.
17:17You'll see.
17:18So all I'm doing is taking the bushing that looks like this and I'm shaping it to look like that.
17:24So basically it fits in here and it'll sandwich and then we can put the washer and the bolt through washer up here.
17:31So we're close to having body mounts ready to go on the clip.
17:37Okay, so what we're talking about right now is the few options there are to support the back of the vehicle.
17:44Like, it's just...
17:48That's the body bouncing on the frame that you're hearing.
17:51It's flexing and not the good flexing.
17:54The frame is cut off here.
17:57Clearly the body goes to here.
17:59Body mounts are here.
18:00The body mounts are all the way towards the rear.
18:02We could just drag a bar from there to there, a piece of square tube.
18:05We have some over there, some good stuff.
18:07Build a little frame, you know, end.
18:10But that's going to interfere with where we might want to put the tank.
18:13So we're going to go ahead and spend a little extra effort.
18:15Come all the way to the back, come all the way across and go all the way back forward.
18:19So we're going to be boxing up the rear of the frame that they already cut off.
18:23And that'll give us provisions to put new body mounts back here and support the vehicle the way it's supposed to be supported.
18:29We're going to mount the front and then we can figure out what we're going to do.
18:31We'll do a lot of stuff underneath.
18:32We can put the car up, figure out where the mounts are going to fit.
18:36Maybe I'll fit some of those brackets.
18:37Yep.
18:38And then you can maybe do some of the square tube welding fabrication for the back of the car.
18:42But we can do it all underneath.
18:43So we'll be in the shade and rust and dirt under the car.

18:47It's a glorious day here.
18:48Just need a breeze now.

18:50So while Alex is over there grinding and welding, I've been doing a little grinding and welding
19:15myself.
19:16I whipped up a couple of the rear body mounts.
19:19She started it.
19:20I'm just kind of helping her out.
19:21Are you ready?
19:22Are you ready for the big reveal?
19:24I hope she likes them.
19:26There they are.
19:27So the idea was instead of welding this to the frame, cutting to the right angle,
19:31just welding it right to the frame, the contact patch would only be this amount,
19:35the whole, the body of the car.
19:37Potentially going to fatigue, crack and fall off or bend or something.
19:40So I welded them to a plate.
19:41That's going to give us a lot more contact patch and more area to weld it on there.
19:45Still going to bend, still going to fall off, but it's going to look good doing it.
20:10I'm going to hold this up actually.
20:19This is crazy.
20:20That's the axle.
20:21Wow.
20:22But we were going up and down before.
20:24Okay.
20:25You don't see the body hitting the frame there.
20:27That's because it's mounted.

20:30It is sitting one inch higher now, which we don't like, but it is mounted at the frame,
20:34which we do really like and we can deal with ride height later.
20:37One of the things I'm seeing that we don't have still is suspension.
20:40The body's not moving, but everything else is moving like it shouldn't be.
20:44Right.
20:45I mean, I guess that's what happens when you heat springs.
20:48That also explains the terrible ride.
20:50So we're going to replace them with new coilovers all the way around
20:54and get it sitting as low as possible, but also actually driving well.
20:58On hooked us up and we're getting ready to do that before we do another test drive.

21:05We need an accurate test.
21:07So I need to see if Lucky reacts the same.

21:13We have a suspension coming up and hopefully it's not as hard as the body mounts have been,
21:19but we are taking a 79 Monte Carlo bottom half and trying to attach it to a 51 Plymouth top
21:26half.
21:27Is it doable?
21:28Yes.
21:29Is it going to be time consuming?
21:30Yeah.
21:31But just think, there's going to be a great test drive that I'm very excited about to come
21:35after that.
21:36Oh, I'm excited too.
21:37Watch your fingers.

21:39We just put body mounts on our 51 Plymouth lead sled that's on a 79 Monte Carlo frame,
21:49but on there was a very loose turn.
21:53Like you do.
21:54So we have suspension coming up.
21:56All new suspension, all four corners from all American.
21:59And hopefully it really takes our bounces and bumps and makes them a lot more smooth.
22:06Smooth.
22:07The only issue is that our lead sled is turning less sled and a lot more four wheel drive.
22:14Oh, the upside to that is these are coilover conversions.
22:16So we can set it at sled and then redial it up to, well, why would you ever take it off of sled?
22:23Yeah.
22:24At some point we may have to address the height issue, but at least we'll have good suspension
22:28and a mounted body and then we'll get into some fun stuff later.
22:30We could throw this thing away now if we wanted to.
22:33Nope.
22:34Okay, it's time for your beat to get a little more dust going because we got stuff to do.
22:39Good times.
23:04So the Alden American coilover conversion kit comes with a upper shock reinforcement.
23:10The deal there is the shocks are set up right now to just stabilize the ride of the car
23:15because there's supposed to be a spring in front of it that is in a much more sturdy area.
23:20Sturdy, yeah.
23:21We're going to be relocating the spring to the same location as the shocks.
23:24So they make this pretty nifty little shock reinforcement.
23:27Very nice piece.
23:28I wonder if we can do this without cutting the floor out.
23:31Wow, wouldn't that be nice?
23:35It's pretty close.
23:36All we have to do is do a little notch.
23:38Oh no, we can't disrespect the Alden American.
23:41No, you just got to do a little notch for him.
23:43And then Alden American sticks down below so you can see it from the back and the braces on the top.
23:48Yeah, let's do it.
23:50I hog a couple of holes to the correct size.
24:02And this is actually fitting right in.
24:04Who would have thought that if you did your homework stuff would work?
24:08Huh.
24:09Okay, so the rear Alden American coilover conversion brackets are all installed.
24:25They bolted up, no problem.
24:27The billet aluminum shocks that are adjustable for ride height and compression and rebound are all installed.
24:34The reinforcement bracket that stops the frame from flexing in is all installed.
24:39I think we're about ready to throw some tires on the back of this and go join Alex in the front for a brake party.
24:47We're going on a brake.
24:49So when we were doing the front suspension, looked at the calipers as they were hanging there and the brake hoses that were there.
24:59They're dry cracked and nasty and all this.
25:02We're like, okay, if we're already here, we might as well go ahead and replace it if we can get the stuff.
25:05And we could.
25:06So while Lucky's finishing up in the back, our brake parts just arrived.
25:10We didn't plan on doing it, but luckily they had some right down the road.
25:13So going through, packing bearings, which isn't a bad thing.
25:17That way everything's fresh.
25:19Brakes worked before.
25:20They worked well.
25:21But now we can prevent having any other issues.
25:23So we wanted to go for a test drive today, but just like everything else, one thing leads to another.
25:27So we're going to go ahead and get everything nice and right.
25:30And then we can hit the streets and then we can do more work after that.
25:34Wah-ha-ha-ha.
25:39So this is a painless wiring harness.
25:40It was somebody who attempted to install it.
25:43Luckily, I've seen this many times where they leave just spools and spools of wire because, oh, they might need them later.
25:49If you're putting in a harness in your car, it's a harness for your car.
25:53So tailor fit it to your car.
25:55Cut it.

26:38I'm going to address the hole in the floor that we found once Lucky pulled the carpet out.
26:42So I'm going to make a pattern off of this, but since it's already a hole and it doesn't really matter what shape that hole is,
26:49I'm going to go ahead and square up the lines for it.
26:52That way it's easy to cut a pattern for, it's easy to cut a patch panel for, and it'll be easier to weld in.
26:58So clean this up and then make a pattern cut and bend and all that fun stuff.

27:18However, it's lighter because I took about 40 pounds of wire out of here.
27:23So that's going to help the 60 foot time, but it's not a drag car.

28:47all right so the deal is we started it up to make sure the vacuum brake booster was working
28:51correctly after bleeding the brakes and the first thing it did was cut a hole a perfect hole i might
28:56add right in the middle of the radiator almost exactly in the middle in the spirit of backyard
29:02hackism we are going to just use a little bondo smear it over the wound let it dry and then we fly let it
29:10dry and then we fly

29:40all right so now that we've taken the racks of the tracks off of the seat and set it back in here
29:56it's given us like maybe an inch or two i mean i could do this before there is no us there is
30:00only me you're right i'm sorry so there's a thing in here called headroom you're not familiar with it
30:04because you have so much of it yeah i on the other hand was wearing a hat in the shape of a dirty
30:10filthy dusty hot rod well that's unfortunate yeah but we have to test today i have to hit every
30:18bump i can and make sure you're still okay believe you me it's a test every time i ride with you it's
30:22already a test anyway okay in a good way okay you exit i get in hey stop breaking stuff we've been
30:31trying to get out of this shop for two days i didn't know it was telescopic that's cool

30:43all right so we rolled our plymouth lead sled out so we can see it in a different light
30:48we were hoping that maybe once we got out here the stance might look a little bit better it doesn't
30:53so while we did put coilovers on this and they are fully adjustable and they're really nice we have
30:58them set at the very lowest setting and it's still sitting super high this is not an all an american
31:04problem our ride is going to be great our looks however not so much and yes we could fix it but
31:12that's going to require a whole lot of work it's going to require cutting the floor up channeling the
31:15body over the frame do frame mounts all kinds of stuff yes we could do it no we can't do it today
31:22maybe we'll touch it one day hopefully not ever
31:30it's a little noisier than before it's a good noise though
31:35you can't hear all the rattles i want to say hit it because it sounds like we're in the back of a
31:40boat we're idling around the dock hold on that's a little better a little better
32:00we have to put exhaust on this yeah it's so bad whoa whoa whoa

32:18that's better that's that's probably better yeah i can hear the rattles on the regulators inside the
32:24doors yeah the car seems pretty solid i can't hear so the transmission works good yeah i said the

33:19anyways so overall the car is still awful
33:26however i'm liking it a little bit more it did get us to treats it did it did so part of it right
33:32now is we can't think straight because it's so loud and exhaust fuming in there correct
33:36which is on you because you got the hole in the oh and the hole was over there it's on you you
33:40didn't put the muscle back on all right we're both responsible yeah it's a 50 50 issue here cool so
33:45we have a hold a patch we have a exhaust to put on and then the car might be halfway
33:50yeah unfortunately that's it for this episode with this car we're only halfway through really yeah

34:02to do plus we have a little special treat kind of like this oh speaking of treats um i finished mine
34:09can i get a a leaf a leaflet thank you crumbs lucky and i went on a test drive and we had a abundance of
34:26exhaust flowing in the car so i just got to finish welding this patch panel in and then lucky is going
34:32to add exhaust because we can't hear we can't faint and uh it was very smelly in the car
34:41i'm hoping we might heat it enough that it will
34:44bend up just far enough to get the end over the trans cross member i think this is going to work
34:56keep going keep going a little more that's it we did it everybody

35:34somebody else's project that's a 51 plymouth on a 79 monte carlo chassis stuff becomes questionable one
35:43man's junk is actually another man's junk in this case yeah our lead sled turned into a bondo condo
35:50because we took everything that was somewhat okay about it we made it worse by making it better so
35:55new suspension good great grand however it's now a high-rise condo full of bondo we have no lead sled
36:02coolness going on so for payoff what do you think we drive about a mile that way and pull over and
36:07break down we drive a couple miles this way pull over and break down you know as interesting as that
36:11sounds i was thinking maybe we took it back to its friends that way the junkyard yeah oh the wreck

36:21already have a plan lucky just doesn't know it and we're going on a trip great okay it's time for a road

42:12get to wrap it up nice i was really worried when we got started that there wouldn't be enough to do
42:18on it i was really worried when we got started fair enough and then once we got it done i was
42:24really worried like oh we're just gonna go sit by the beach and try to get rid of our car this truly
42:30is the definition of it's not the destination it's the journey anyways as pain in the butt as this has
42:37been it has also been i mean halfway enjoyable there were some rewards it did get us through
42:43historical beautiful old torrents it did it got us some delicious snacky treats from a local bakery
42:50snacky treat it did do that um we had a fun test drive we've laughed a lot mainly at ourselves and our
42:57situation and the exhaust fumes inside the car could have had something to do with that too all right with
43:02that said we do have some nice parts on the car which leads us to a big thank you to all in american
43:08the nicest part on this entire car with that said you have social media i do i am mobile tech lucky on
