00:00There's a lot of guys here that are mad at each other.
00:02We get mad at each other for maybe 30 seconds, and then we laugh it off, and that's what it's about.
00:07Period.
00:07But I keep thumping them like this, and after I thump them a couple times, I feel better.
00:12But here we are at Irmo South Carolina.
00:14Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage, the great race wraps with 135 classics, a few wrong turns, and a lot of right stories.
00:56Proof that on time is relative when you're having fun.
01:00We'll meet the crew who turned a 1931 Rio Royale into a 2,300 mile endurance legend.
01:11Then swing by Southfield Classics to see how hot riding meets high voltage, quietly.
01:18Finally, Sam tears into a 66 Corvette to mix old school looks with new school lungs, summit style.
01:30We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:34Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:40From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:42Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard.
01:44It's a complete family member.
01:46It's an experience.
01:47All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:50Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:54Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:56Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:58I guess we'll find out tonight.
02:01Nine days, 2,300 miles, and a few creative detours, the great race wraps in style as Sam and crew trade trophies for stories.
02:09And maybe a few overheated tempers in true road warrior fashion.
02:14We may not win the race, but nobody's had more fun than us.
02:18Yesterday, we had an amazing day.
02:21We made a couple mistakes.
02:22We drove crazy to make it up.
02:25We came within, on that segment, within eight seconds.
02:29And how many minutes did we make up, Sam?
02:31We can't tell.
02:32Yeah, a lot.
02:34It's a lot.
02:34It's a lot.
02:35About 13, 14 minutes we made up.
02:37Yeah, it was incredible what we were able to do.
02:40We had so much fun.
02:41The whole thing here, for us, is about bringing the experience to you guys.
02:47We hope everybody really enjoys what you bring, that we're able to bring to you.
02:53Without you guys, we wouldn't be able to do this.
02:56What an experience.
03:01We are racing for the RPM Foundation with their X-Cup team.
03:04It's a great race.
03:05It's always a good time with me and my teammates.
03:07We learn a lot every year.
03:09We always have a great time.
03:10Some core memories made.
03:11We always, you know, run into trouble somewhere.
03:13But it's a good time.
03:14At the end of the day, it's a good time.
03:15This was my fourth great race.
03:17And just as fun as my first one, even though I have two new teammates, which makes it even
03:21more fun because they're so great to hang out with.
03:24I got to agree, it was extremely hot this year.
03:26It was kind of rough at the beginning because it started out hot instead of getting hotter.
03:30Overall, it was awesome.
03:31It's been great to come back to the States after living in Italy for almost two years
03:36now and just back with these amazing people.
03:39We only see each other once a year.
03:40So overall, great experience.
03:43Sam, I greatly appreciate it.
03:45We've had so much fun at this race.
03:48It's our pleasure to sponsor it and to be able to participate in it.
03:52We've had a wonderful run.
03:53Wonderful run.
03:54I want to say thank you to all our sponsors, including Doug.
03:57He was actually one of the sponsors this year for the great race coverage that came on Sam's
04:01Garage.
04:02Hemsaw is awesome.
04:04The last industrial saw that's made in America completely.
04:07They do an awesome job from their little saws that you guys want for the DIYer in your shop.
04:12Instead of using a chop saw that makes a mess everywhere and you've got to use goggles and
04:16metal goes flying everywhere, his saws being band saws, reverse rotation.
04:20They last a long time.
04:21They're nice and quiet.
04:22They work every time.
04:23And the biggest thing about them is that they cut perfectly straight.
04:26So if you guys are looking for a saw that's inexpensive for what it does for your shop
04:31and your garage at home, look at the Hemsaws.
04:33And if you guys are industries as well, big giant companies, he makes saws that'll cut
04:37a truck in half.
04:38So you guys want a nice saw that's going to last forever, check out Hemsaw.
04:42Dan came all the way from New York to finish the last three legs of the race.
04:46That's cool.
04:47That's a 12-hour drive one way just to get to South Carolina from New York.
04:51Orange County.
04:53Well, I did the race last year and I know how tough my days on the road is doing this
04:57race.
04:58And I was proud to collect one of those medals.
05:01And Sam's got two of them now.
05:03He's one up on me.
05:04Well, now what we're going to do is go check out who won.
05:06Of course, Doug and I are always winners.
05:08But we want to know who actually won.
05:10So that's going to be cool.
05:11One of these teams will be your Grand Championship Division winner and overall winner of the 2025
05:18Hemings Great Race presented by Hagerty.
05:22In an unbelievable performance, they have dominated nearly end to end.
05:26Jeff and Eric Puddin, you are the damn team.
05:34Unbelievable shootout.
05:36I believe Jeff and Eric are on fire this week.
05:38Ben and Joey have been getting out there trying to run them down.
05:45Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:50Brought to you by the following companies.
05:52Brought to you by the following companies.
06:22Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:37A 1931 Rio takes on modern weather, open cockpit and all.
06:42Proving vintage horsepower still gets it done.
06:45We catch up with the Rogo fastener team who keep the bolts tight and the racers tighter.
06:53I'm here with Dan and the future of Rogo fastener, Joe.
06:56He's the new COO.
06:58I'm very proud of you.
06:59You're kicking the rain.
07:00And I want to say thank you to both of them along with Rogo fastener themselves because
07:04they sponsored the Great Race and they got us able to bring this entire footage over to
07:09you guys at home because the Great Race is something very special.
07:12We just finished 2,300 miles.
07:15Now Rogo fastener, you guys, they have everything that you need as far as abrasives, fasteners,
07:19cabinetry, everything.
07:21And they do such a good job, family-owned business.
07:23In Middletown, New York, Orange County, New York.
07:25Family-owned and operated since 1992.
07:28Joe was born into the business, raised in the business, and he's in the process of becoming
07:33the next CEO down the road when I've had my time and he'll be taking over and running
07:40the business for the next generation and the next 30-something years.
07:44If you guys are DIYers at home, you have a huge facility as far as an operational garage,
07:49anything that needs fasteners, that needs abrasives, that needs cabinetry.
07:55They're your man.
07:55Drill bits, cutting tools, anything you guys need, they're your guys.
07:58Just go to rogofastener.com, check them out, they support the Great Race, the support car
08:03guys, the camaraderie.
08:04We need people like Rogo to keep this dream alive going down the road and for the future.
08:17It's a 31 Rio Royale.
08:19It's an exact replica, one that ran in the 1931 Indy 500.
08:23Rio did it for a publicity stunt just to show how reliable their engines were.
08:27And they took a bone-stocked four-door car and cut the roof off and put a boat tail on
08:32it.
08:33And all the racers of the day said they'll never qualify and never finish and they qualified
08:38an average speed of 106.7 miles an hour and finished ninth.
08:42These guys drove that car 2,300 miles through some serious weather because you guys get soaking
08:48wet.
08:48It's open cockpit.
08:49Right.
08:49And one day we actually, we lost our speedometer.
08:52Yep.
08:52It took us four minutes to figure out the issues, change fuses, get back on the road.
08:56And it was a 30 mile an hour road with no visibility because of the torrential rain.
09:00And I told Phillip, who did a great job navigating, just to keep me on course and I was going to
09:07fly.
09:07We passed all the cars that got by us about 70 miles an hour, no visibility with the lights
09:13flashing and the horn on.
09:15The visibility was so bad, we never saw the checkpoint.
09:17We went by them at 70 and they must have gone, what was that?
09:21So it was wild.
09:22It was a good car.
09:23It's a great time.
09:24The great race is all about great people and a good time.
09:37What a fabulous day from the beginning of the race, nobody had more fun than us.
09:48We missed some turns.
09:50We made it up.
09:51We came across the finish line.
09:54The car ran flawlessly.
09:56We got some tweaks we'll do for Route 66 run next year.
10:00I'm really proud of Sam and I, the job we've done.
10:04I can't express it enough and everybody that's followed us, this is a long, grueling ordeal.
10:09To just finish, I've never believed in participation medals, but to win this after 2,300 miles in nine
10:17days of racing is a heck of an accomplishment and everybody, if you can't race it, follow us.
10:24If you get a chance, we go by you, come on out and see us.
10:27We can't do it without you guys.
10:34We've got a really exciting announcement for you guys.
10:43The Nopi Nationals are coming back on September 12th, 13th, 2026 at Echo Park Speedway, formerly
10:48known as Land Motor Speedway.
10:50I built this car for Sullivan about six years ago out of boxes.
10:54This is a six-speed left-hand drive turbo Supra number 147 and we are going to be giving it away
11:01at the Nationals, we're going to call it the Supra Sunday Giveaway because you have to
11:05be there on Sunday when we hand out the raffles and you're going to be there to collect your
11:09prize.
11:10Now, how do you get those tickets?
11:11This is a giveaway.
11:12You've got to go to the merch store and anytime you buy anything over $25, you get a ticket.
11:17You're not only going to get a ticket, but you'll also get a $25 coupon from Summit Racing
11:21where you can go online and get whatever you want from their site and have $25 in your pocket.
11:26So you guys want to stay tuned as we go to September into 2026, we're going to do a couple mods
11:31on this car.
11:32This already has a single turbo conversion.
11:34It's already got a standalone computer in it.
11:37It's all ready to go.
11:38It's got the clutch.
11:39Most of this car is brand new because we just put it together about six years ago.
11:42So one of you guys are going to be very lucky in obtaining a six-speed iconic Toyota Supra
11:47left-hand drive.
11:48Stay tuned.
11:49Nopi.com.
11:56No pistons, no noise, just torque for days.
12:13Southfield Classics show how electric conversions can still smell like shop grease and hot coffee,
12:18not just electrons.
12:21All right, so today we're going to be talking about batteries here at Southfield Classics.
12:24And this battery pack that Noe and Jesus just installed, you say weighs as much as a fully
12:30dressed 350.
12:31Basically the same weight, 185 pounds per battery pack, weighs about 545, 560.
12:37I think that's about the same as a 350 Chevrolet dressed.
12:40So you're not going to have that huge weight, noise from the tires, and tire wear due to the
12:45extra weight.
12:47No, it's really the same weight.
12:49Everything kind of calculated out the same.
12:50Where we have gone back and had our engineers make sure that we center it correctly over
12:55top of the front axles to where we get the good balance.
12:57Everything's balanced like it's supposed to be.
12:59Has the same weight.
13:00Basically it's the same truck with no noise.
13:04How much does that motor weigh?
13:05A couple hundred pounds max.
13:06So like a transmission?
13:08Yeah.
13:08Actually lighter than a transmission.
13:09Because there's no food in it either.
13:11A little bit of food, but not 13 quarts of food.
13:15Basically it holds a liter.
13:16That is so cool.
13:17A liter of food.
13:18Tell me about the bracketry and how you position this and why.
13:22So the bracketry was made up, I guess, for the design of the way the, you know, the firewall
13:27is made.
13:28It's made with a flat firewall and then it has a pitch of an angle down toward the bottom
13:32of it.
13:33So we made this Z-type style bracketry so that it actually sits inside of an engine bay.
13:38Our design was to make it to where it doesn't have to be cut into the firewall.
13:43Absolutely.
13:43And you can still have the interior space as well.
13:45Correct.
13:45Correct.
13:46You still have all that other stuff and, you know, you don't have any of the other things
13:49that you have to cut up or fabricate or any of that.
13:52Most of all those stuff is all just made up, done and ready to be installed.
13:56That's very cool.
13:56Now, I saw the front end has got a rack and pinion, modern design.
14:00What kind of front end did you say that was again?
14:01I believe that comes off of Mustang II.
14:03When they say Mustang II, is that the 79 Mustang II that came out that no one liked?
14:09Yeah, it was pre-Foxbody Mustang that nobody liked.
14:11The best part about it was the suspension.
14:13The front end.
14:14That's incredible.
14:15It's used in everything.
14:17We're using some of the best components that they've made over the years to try to make
14:20it even better as we go forward.
14:22Everything on this is a hot rod.
14:23That's right.
14:24All the components are everything you and I and know are used to that we work with in the
14:28industry.
14:28Yeah, absolutely.
14:29So the only difference is the cool fact that it's a high voltage.
14:31Yeah, it's just different.
14:32You know, and everybody, you know, you can have your quabbles about it.
14:35You can say, oh, I don't like it.
14:37But it's all just moving in that forward direction, forward movement.
14:40You know, we've, of course, we've all done LS swaps for most of our career.
14:44So this is just the next evolution of it.
14:46It's got to keep moving forward.
14:47We've all done turbo swaps.
14:48We've done all that stuff, right?
14:50And if you're a real gearhead, then you're going to appreciate everything you see here
14:54with a giant smile on your face, ear to ear, driving it down the road.
14:57That's right.
14:58The only difference, like I tell everybody, when you drive it is you're able to talk to
15:02your buddy in the seat next to you and you don't have to turn the radio up.
15:06So they're super fun.
15:07They're super fast.
15:08The coolest part about this is that when you're a youngster like we were and we're
15:12sneaking out the houses and pushing the cars down the street because you couldn't let
15:16the exhaust sound be heard.
15:18Look at that.
15:19But I'm telling you guys here at Southfield Classics with these high voltage vehicles
15:22that we're building is a total game changer.
15:25All the will would, quick performance, everything you would see normally in a hot rod, but with
15:29high voltage and done beautifully.
15:31It's not just put together.
15:32You guys really do it in an attractive manner.
15:35That's been our goal since from our outset is, you know, I'm a hot rod guy and I'm a
15:39big, big classic car guy.
15:42So if we were going to do it, we wanted to make sure that we did it to the high,
15:45utmost quality and make sure that it's right up there with the real show quality vehicles.
15:49That's what it's all about for me.
15:51So that's why we try to instill it on all our vehicles.
15:53And that's why if you guys are gearheads and you have a collection at home, you got to
15:57have one of these in that collection because that's make you a real gearhead.
16:00This is absolutely cool.
16:01Thank you so much for showing us this.
16:05Sam's garage is presented by NH oil undercoating is brought to you by the following companies.
16:35Welcome back to Sam's garage presented by NH OU.
16:40Sam turns a 327 Corvette into a factory fresh bruiser, trick flow heads, roller cam, and
17:01enough summit racing goodies to make every small block guy nod and approval.
17:07I got my good customer, John, all the way from New York.
17:09He brought me his 1966 all original Corvette equipped with a 327.
17:13And then we're going to be upgrading the engine.
17:15The engine itself is at Don Ewing, Ewing Automotive Machine, and he's doing a refresh for me.
17:19But we are going to do the top end.
17:21Being that it's a 327, I want to keep it original.
17:23But we're going to dress it up.
17:24All right, so I went to summit racing and I got a top end kit.
17:27First starting off with a set of trick flow cylinder heads.
17:30This right here, the weight savings alone is going to be 40 pounds.
17:33194 intake valves, 150 exhaust valves, 56 cc chambers, three angle valve job.
17:39It's going to make good power.
17:41Along with that, we went ahead and got a 600 CFM summit racing carburetor because we don't
17:46want to get too big.
17:47It's very important.
17:48You guys size that correctly, depending on what you're building.
17:51We went ahead and got a dual roller timing set.
17:53Also adjustable.
17:54You can see right here, it's keyed for the crankshaft.
17:56You can put it anywhere you want.
17:57We're going to put it at the top to center.
17:59I went ahead and got a summit racing camshaft as well.
18:02Not too big.
18:03It's got 528 on the intake and 538 on the exhaust.
18:07It comes in at 1800 RPM.
18:09It's going to be perfect for us because we don't want to go too high.
18:12327s are high revving engines.
18:14But when you put an automatic behind it, you're not really utilizing that high rev.
18:18How do you recommend for people to decide what size camshaft to put in?
18:22When you're going into the camshaft specs, you want to make sure you're getting the correct
18:25camshaft, whether it's a hydraulic tappet, a non-hydraulic tappet, or a hydraulic roller.
18:30We decided to upgrade to a hydraulic roller.
18:32In the specs, when you're looking at it, it gives you the duration of when it comes in
18:36as an RPM.
18:38When you're sizing your camshaft, depending on what you got, if you have a stick shift,
18:41depending on what rear end gear you got.
18:43Very important.
18:44You want to size that RPM band according to what you're going to be doing with the engine.
18:48And is that something that Summit Racing can help you with through customer service?
18:52Absolutely.
18:52If you have any questions, you can always call Summit Racing and ask them what they recommend.
18:55But when you're looking at camshafts, always make sure to go into that spec and look at
18:59what you got.
19:00That's why this one goes in 1800 RPM.
19:02We also went with the nice hydraulic roller lifters.
19:05That's going to make it really nice.
19:061.5 roller rockers.
19:08And once these are all installed, then I'm going to use this nice push rod tool to find
19:12out my length of the push rod.
19:14And once I've got the length, I'm going to add 50 thousandths to it for preload and then
19:17order my push rods from Summit Racing.
19:19I like that you kept the factory valve cover and I know you took it to Miller Powder Coating.
19:26And they always do a fantastic job.
19:29So it's nice keeping old school with new school.
19:31Absolutely.
19:32See, that's going to look really good right there.
19:34So the top end is going to be all nice trick flow deal.
19:37But what I decided to do is use the factory intake manifold.
19:40This is heavy, right?
19:41But the factory intake manifold has the fill for the oil and it's got the PCV valve for
19:45the crankcase.
19:46Nothing on the valve cover you see.
19:48So I didn't want to change the valve covers.
19:49This way I kept the manifold, had Miller Powder Coating, make it look really nice along
19:53with the exhaust manifolds.
19:55This is ceramic coated, factory fresh.
19:59It's not paint, so it's not going to chip and it's not going to look nasty, old rusty
20:03looking car.
20:04I want to keep the factory manifold so that it stays true to the car.
20:08Once this is all installed, we're going to be putting a cold case radiator in it as well.
20:12We're going to be doing the suspension, making it all nice.
20:14Put a 700R behind it, put AC in it and John's going to enjoy this for many years to come.
20:19That's right.
20:20John is a retired New York City police officer and now that he's going to have some time
20:25to really enjoy this car, I think he's going to like all the special touches that you're
20:28doing with it.
20:29Absolutely.
20:30Very much so.
20:31And he knows how to drive manual, but he doesn't want to drive it in New York traffic.
20:34So I totally understand, John.
20:36Don't blame him.
20:36So you guys want to build yourself, whether it be a small block Chevy, small block Ford,
20:40old school, new school LS, go to Summit Racing.
20:43They've got everything you need.
20:44If you have any questions, give them a call.
20:45Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
20:55From great race grit to plug and play torque and small block glory, this week proved gearheads
21:02never run out of ways to make power, just new ways to talk about it.
21:06See you next time on Sam's Garage, where the tools are loud and the laughs are louder.
21:11See you next time on Sam's Garage.
