A young woman died after being hit by a bullet fired during celebratory firing at a wedding procession in the Lisadi Gate area of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred late on Monday night on 20 Foota Road in Shyam Nagar.
The deceased, Afshan (20), daughter of Arshad, was standing on the terrace with her grandfather, watching the wedding procession of Suhail, son of Haji Shahnawaz. During the celebrations, some youths began firing. A bullet struck Afshan in the stomach, causing her to collapse on the rooftop.
Family members rushed her to KMC Hospital, but she died during treatment.
Police reached the spot after receiving information. CCTV footage revealed that the shot was fired by a youth named Saqib, who has been arrested. The pistol used in the incident has also been recovered. Other youths involved in the firing fled, and police teams are searching for them.
Following a complaint by Afshan’s father, an FIR has been registered against the groom Suhail, his brother Saqib, father Haji Shahnawaz, and 20–25 unidentified persons. The groom’s family reportedly hid him at the wedding venue, but he escaped through a back door before police arrived.
Meanwhile, the bride remained seated in her wedding attire as the groom and his family went into hiding. Police are probing whether the weapons used were licensed or illegal.
SSP Dr. Vipin Tada said strict action will be taken and teams have been formed to arrest the absconding accused.
