A leopard became trapped inside a chicken coop in Uttarakhand's Pauri district on Tuesday morning after entering the enclosure in search of prey. The animal remained stuck for nearly two hours and killed 10 chickens before being rescued by the forest department.

The incident took place in the Mason Talla area, where around 50 chickens were grazing inside a poultry enclosure. At around 6 am, the leopard emerged from a nearby forest and entered the coop looking for food.

As the predator attacked the birds, panic broke out among the chickens. In the chaos, the leopard killed 10 chickens. However, while chasing its prey, it moved deeper into the enclosure and became trapped, unable to find a way out.

The loud cries of the chickens alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the spot and were shocked to find a leopard trapped inside the coop. A large crowd soon gathered outside as the animal repeatedly attempted to escape. The unusual scene attracted widespread attention in the area, with panic and curiosity prevailing among villagers.

Upon receiving information, a forest department team rushed to the location and first cleared the crowd to ensure safety. Wildlife experts then formulated a plan to safely rescue the animal.

After an operation lasting around an hour, the leopard was tranquilised and safely captured. Officials said special care was taken to ensure that neither the animal nor any residents were harmed during the rescue.

According to forest department officials, the leopard was successfully secured after being tranquilised, and further necessary action was taken. Villagers later praised the forest department team for carrying out the rescue operation safely.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing human-wildlife conflict in several parts of Garhwal, including Pauri district. Forest officials and wildlife experts noted that leopards are increasingly entering villages in search of food due to the shrinking gap between forested areas and human settlements.

Experts believe poultry farms, domestic animals and improperly disposed organic waste often attract wild animals towards populated areas. Authorities have advised residents to immediately inform the forest department in such situations rather than gathering crowds near trapped or distressed wildlife.
