20 November - National evening forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there. The wintry showers that some parts of the UK have experienced over the last couple of
00:05days ease overnight. And then main cause for concern are icy patches because it's going to
00:11be a widely cold night under widespread clear skies with the winds easing but the air still
00:17having been sourced from the Arctic. Temperatures for many of us dipping to minus two to minus six
00:25Celsius. And in some parts of Scotland, particularly where we've got snow cover, below minus 10
00:30Celsius. And that means, of course, where we've got any moisture on the ground, particularly where
00:35we've seen those showers coming through across northern Scotland, eastern England, Northern
00:39Ireland, West Wales, Cornwall, there is that risk of slippery surfaces, icy stretches first thing
00:44Friday. But there'll also be some fog patches around, particularly towards the west. Not many.
00:50It's relatively clean air mass. Some cloud towards the east. That tends to thin into the afternoon.
00:56And it's a beautiful, crisp, late autumn day for many of us. Long spells of sunshine. Staying cold
01:02into the afternoon, but very few showers. Those showers largely disappearing to the east. One or
01:08two still trickling into parts of Cornwall and West Wales, perhaps East Anglia. But for much of England
01:13and Wales at least, and southern Scotland, perhaps eastern Scotland until later on, it's cold, but it's
01:19bright. Five to seven Celsius, typically. A little bit milder for some extreme coastal parts. Colder
01:25where we've got some higher land and also some snow cover. But for Scotland, for Northern Ireland,
01:31it turns cloudier into the afternoon. And outbreaks of rain start to arrive into the west of Scotland
01:36by evening. Those outbreaks of rain spreading into parts of Northern Ireland and the rest of Scotland
01:41overnight. This is an Atlantic weather front that's moving in, marking the change to wetter, windier,
01:48but also less cold weather for the weekend. So here comes the weather front. As it bumps into the
01:53cold air overnight, chances of a few flakes of snow again over higher parts of Scotland and Northern
01:58England. But at lower levels, it's certainly going to be rain, heavy rain in places as we start off
02:04Saturday, particularly Western England and Wales. But it does clear Northern Ireland from the word go
02:09with showers replacing it. It stays clear of East Anglia in the southeast. So a frosty but bright start
02:16here. Elsewhere across the UK, temperatures tend to rise through the night rather than drop. And as a
02:22result, it's going to be mostly frost-free as we begin things on Saturday. Those outbreaks of rain
02:27then pushing through. And they do clear many areas, leading to a mix of sunny spells and showers for
02:34Scotland, for Northern Ireland, Northwest England, West Wales. But the rain lingers across the Midlands and
02:39as it pushes into East Anglia in the southeast, it slows down. Another spell of rain pushing later in the
02:44day into the southwest. So a cloudy day, a breezy day as well. Those outbreaks of rain making it feel
02:52unpleasant. And temperatures, yeah, they've got back towards average but not as mild as the first half
02:58of November. So still feeling a little on the cold side if you're under any rain or wind. And the showers
03:05in the northwest, they continue. But Sunday's looking like a very unsettled day. Stronger winds, further bands
03:11of rain and showers. And again, temperatures at around the high single figures, perhaps 10 or 11 Celsius in
03:17some spots. Bye-bye.
