00:00What I love most about being a designer
00:03is feeling like I can do anything.
00:06Sewing is my life.
00:08I can't imagine not doing this.
00:10I have talent.
00:12I am a force to be reckoned with.
00:19I know who I am, and I know what I want to make.
00:21I'm ready for this.
00:23I'm a designer that is different.
00:24That's something that the fashion world needs to see.
00:28I have to win.
00:29It would change so much for me.
00:32In this competition, sometimes you're in,
00:34and sometimes you're out.
00:38Let's go.
00:39I'm ready.
00:50I'm so excited.
00:51Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to do Project Runway,
00:53and now I'm here.
00:55Oh, my gosh.
00:56Wow.
00:57Wow.
00:59I am lost for words right now.
01:02I am here for a reason.
01:03I have it in me.
01:04I feel like I could win this.
01:08This is crazy.
01:11Oh, my God.
01:12Like, this is real.
01:14I made it to Project Runway Canada.
01:16I'm doing this for my people.
01:18I'm doing this for my people.
01:20Little feather.
01:21Little feather.
01:22That's so beautiful.
01:23I'm Chad.
01:24I'm the only Qu茅b茅cois here, and I feel kind of great.
01:28I love to present the Quebec people.
01:30The label, nice to meet you.
01:32I love it.
01:33I love it.
01:34This is surreal.
01:35It just feels like I'm waiting for somebody to be like,
01:37psych, you know, something.
01:39Wait, you're Charles, right?
01:41Charles is a designer that is pretty much known here in Toronto.
01:44So to see him, I'm a bit worried for myself.
01:47You're a huge competition.
01:51What's happening?
01:53Oh, my God.
01:54Someone important is coming out of that plane.
01:57Oh, my God.
02:03Oh, my God.
02:05Coco Rocha.
02:06Oh, my God.
02:08Yes.
02:09Coco looks so fabulous.
02:12She just exudes a confident energy.
02:14I just hope I can dress her one day.
02:16Oh, my goodness.
02:17Welcome to Project Runway Canada, designers.
02:23This is such a big moment for all of you.
02:25But don't forget, only one of you will be named
02:28Canada's next great fashion designer.
02:31Want to know what you're competing for?
02:33Yes.
02:34A feature spread in Elle Canada magazine.
02:38And from TD, a career-launching investment of $100,000.
02:45Oh!
02:48Crazy!
02:49That's insane.
02:50But I'm not the only one joining you on this ride.
02:53Okay.
02:54She's a celebrated designer, author, activist,
02:58and industry visionary.
03:00Your mentor, Aurora James.
03:03Aurora is incredible.
03:06She's had a huge impact on the fashion world.
03:09It's so inspiring.
03:11We love you!
03:13I am so honored to be your mentor.
03:17Are you ready to hear about your first challenge?
03:19Yes!
03:20Yes!
03:21Well, designers, I've come with some baggage.
03:24Oh!
03:25What's happening?
03:26I am nervous.
03:27Are we using other people's clothes?
03:30Please step up and claim one.
03:34Open them up and take a look.
03:36I'm nervous for them.
03:38Oh, my God!
03:39Denim!
03:40Denim!
03:41Yes!
03:42I'm very excited.
03:44I like working with denim because I'm the master of upcycling.
03:48I have my own design brand.
03:49It is called Obnoxious.
03:50Everything I do is denim.
03:52Everything.
03:53Denim is not the easiest material to work with.
03:57It's thick.
03:58It's bulky.
03:59So this is a challenge.
04:01Den-um?
04:02That's the nice one.
04:03The Canadian tuxedo used to be a punchline, but now it's no joke.
04:08Fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Chanel have elevated this iconic look,
04:13giving denim on denim its moment on the runway time and time again.
04:18For your first challenge, we want you to create a high-fashion, runway-ready, all-denim look from her.
04:24And you'll find everything else you need in the workroom.
04:27Your model cards can be found inside your suitcases.
04:30This is a two-day challenge.
04:32And your one-shot to make a killer first impression is your chance to show me and the judges
04:38exactly who you are as a designer with a look that is authentically you.
04:43There's a lot of pressure to reflect my aesthetic out of denim.
04:47It's going to be really, really tough.
04:49All right, you have 30 minutes to sketch your ideas, and I'll meet you in the workroom later.
04:53And the next time I see you, it will be on the other runway.
04:57Woo!
04:58Designers, your 30 minutes starts now.
05:01Woo!
05:02Okay.
05:03Here you go.
05:04Hello.
05:07Hello.
05:10This is going to be fun.
05:11Is your model a man or woman?
05:13I believe they're non-binary.
05:14Okay, slay.
05:15I always try to design with the queer community in mind.
05:18I identify as non-binary as well.
05:21So for this challenge, I'm doing this whole gender-bendy moment with this pointed halter
05:25neck corset, dramatic hip panniers, and we might get a little sailor hat out of me.
05:30Do you work with denim a lot?
05:32Actually, yeah.
05:33My brand is a denim-based brand.
05:36I started my brand two years ago.
05:39It's called Maison Prix Fontaine.
05:41Each day of my life, I'm touching denim.
05:43So I'm thinking a maxi gown with a lot of colors to create a big ombre effect.
05:51I'm super confident.
05:52I'm terrified.
05:54I don't do menswear.
05:56Oh, my God.
05:58I have been a designer for 10 years.
06:02I'm a really big jacket designer.
06:05So I'm making a military jacket and some pants.
06:11I'm good at pants, but these are men's pants.
06:15It's so out of my comfort zone.
06:17You kill it.
06:19I feel like all my ideas are on this paper, and I need this taken away from me before
06:23I overthink.
06:24I think I'm set.
06:26Time's up.
06:27Let's go to the workroom.
06:30What did you pack for our trip?
06:32Denim!
06:33Let's get it.
06:37At stake for the winner from TD, a career-launching investment of $100,000 and a feature in Elle
06:46Canada magazine with global supermodel Coco Rocha, fashion designer Spencer Badu, creative
06:53director Aurora James, and legendary fashion journalist Jeanne Becker.
06:59This is Project Runway Canada.
07:11Oh, my God.
07:13Okay.
07:14It is hitting me that I'm on Project Runway Canada.
07:17Seeing the space, I'm like, oh, my God, I'm here.
07:20Where's my spot?
07:21Oh, I'm right there.
07:23Curtis, you're here.
07:24Are we table besties?
07:26This is going to be fun.
07:27Yes.
07:28I'm going through all of my denim right now.
07:34I'm kind of freaking out because I don't even know if I have enough to fit the model.
07:38Do you have a white that you're willing to give up?
07:40I kind of need the white.
07:42Ooh.
07:43Yeah.
07:44Do you have a gray?
07:45I'll take a gray.
07:46There's a giant risk with my design because I'm going to be shredding the denim, and I
07:48don't know if I'm going to finish it.
07:50Do you usually do, like, more gowns and stuff?
07:54Oh, no.
07:55I do a combination of everything.
07:56I actually love streetwear.
07:57I've done couture.
07:58I've done streetwear.
08:00So I'm making an asymmetrical ombre effect dress.
08:03It's going to go from black to white, and everything has to be perfect.
08:08Winning Project Runway Canada would be very validating in the Canadian fashion landscape.
08:13I want to win this whole thing.
08:15I just don't like what I have to do.
08:16Yeah.
08:17And it's just going to be a lot.
08:18How's it going?
08:19Um, I'm just adding colors.
08:21In my culture, they used to use the red eyebrows from the ptarmigans, and they would use it as
08:27trim at the bottom of our garments.
08:28So that's kind of my thinking behind this.
08:30So in the Western Arctic, our fashion is very influenced by the fur trade.
08:36Part of what I like to do is taking our traditional materials and using them in new ways.
08:42So I'm planning to make a cocktail dress that looks very high fashion.
08:47My dream is to do this full time, you know?
08:50I have five children.
08:51I want them to see that this is possible for someone from Dook Dook Dook.
08:56I'm like proof that it's never too late to start chasing your dreams.
09:00You can definitely do it.
09:02Okay.
09:03I'm so a denim girl.
09:05I often wear denim on denim.
09:07I grew up on a farm.
09:08So this is my challenge.
09:10I'm thinking a slouchy jacket and a matching pant.
09:14I feel like it's going to have to be patchwork.
09:16Patchwork can come off really crafty if it's not perfectly executed.
09:20So I just have to make sure that it doesn't look like a DIY project.
09:23All right, let's start cutting open jeans.
09:28Hi, designers.
09:30Hi.
09:31So this is your very first challenge.
09:35I really want to see what you're up to.
09:41All right, Leland, how's it going?
09:43Oh, wow.
09:44Okay, we're going for it.
09:45Yeah.
09:46This design is definitely in my realm.
09:48I make costumes.
09:49I make costumes every day of my life.
09:52So I want to do more of a street wear meets Canadian tuxedo.
09:56And I'm adding a very oversized ruched pant.
10:00And this deconstructed coat with this little corset.
10:03This is our first challenge.
10:05So I want to show technical skill and the camp and the fun.
10:09You can make something fun, but high fashion means it's also art.
10:13Yes, of course.
10:15So I pretty much started designing around two years ago.
10:18Self thought?
10:19Yeah, self thought.
10:20My aesthetic has a lot of punk rock vibe to it.
10:24You'll see me using vinyl, leather.
10:27So I want to create a two piece garment for a rebel, like a good girl gone bad.
10:32Let's see how it goes.
10:33Hi, Naomi.
10:34Hey, girl.
10:35How's it going?
10:36I'm losing my mind.
10:37You are?
10:38Yeah.
10:39Why?
10:40I feel like I'm really in my head.
10:41I haven't even been graduated for a year yet from fashion school.
10:44Don't let that hold you back.
10:46I never graduated fashion school.
10:48Okay.
10:49I'm really excited to see what's going on.
10:51I have a little bolero moment.
10:53Okay.
10:54A jellyfish denim skirt with lots of chunks of denim coming down.
10:58And I'm kind of debating the top.
11:01Which one's giving you the most high fashion?
11:04This one.
11:05The bra top?
11:07Yeah.
11:08Um, okay.
11:10Which one's giving you the most high fashion?
11:12I don't know.
11:13I feel like maybe it hasn't been drawn yet.
11:18I think you have to, like, pare it back a little bit.
11:21Maybe what I'm making isn't high fashion.
11:24Maybe I'm going in the wrong direction.
11:25I've wasted so much time.
11:27I don't know what I'm doing yet.
11:28And I don't even know where to start.
11:34What is yours?
11:36I'll show it to you, but you can't laugh.
11:37Okay.
11:38Oh, no.
11:40I'm hoping my designs don't look like my drive.
11:43I wanted to bring up elegant twist to denim.
11:46So I'm making a flowy denim train dress.
11:49Denim's not giving me flowy.
11:51No, but it will give you a train.
11:53Okay.
11:54I think.
11:55Where is all this self-doubt coming from?
11:58Because I'm sure.
11:59Well, it sounds super high fashion to me.
12:01Yeah.
12:02That's what's most important.
12:05Ah.
12:06I'm bleeding.
12:07Oh, no. Are you okay?
12:08Just a little pin moment.
12:09Not great for my white fabric.
12:11I was very lucky to get these white jeans because I want to create the look of a classic tuxedo shirt.
12:18And I want to do a skirt.
12:20I think my design philosophy is a bit different because I am self-taught.
12:25I actually did a science degree.
12:27I wrote the MCAT and I applied to medical school.
12:30But I'm here to prove that I can do this.
12:37Okay. That's not right.
12:39Something didn't go according to plan here.
12:41I need to figure out what it is.
12:44With this design, I want it to look high fashion.
12:47So I am creating a strapless dress with a plunging picnic line and a floral applique motif.
12:54My concern is that the judges might feel like I didn't push myself enough.
12:59Pushing yourself within this context isn't always about the most work.
13:05Mm-hmm.
13:06It's about the most beautifully executed vision.
13:10Mm-hmm. Okay.
13:12I'm impressed with some of what I'm seeing.
13:15But there's only an hour left tonight.
13:18Get on it.
13:19Awesome. Thank you, Aurora.
13:21Bye. Bye, Aurora.
13:22Okay, I'm going to go sew these and hope for the best.
13:27So close.
13:28I'm in love with this machine.
13:30Okay, my jeans are done.
13:32Yeah.
13:34I'm looking around and I'm seeing other designers at the machine sewing already.
13:38And I'm a little bit nervous because I haven't started any of my actual sewing yet.
13:43There's no time for this.
13:44So I'm thinking maybe I'll just create a tunic dress.
13:46I'll probably have to utilize all of tomorrow to sew it together.
13:49So I'm just making fabric right now.
13:51Yo.
13:56That looks good.
13:57I'm almost wondering if it needs the over piece.
13:59Like, do I want to put more work for myself?
14:02I think it needs it.
14:04I'm overwhelmed.
14:05Usually, this is something that would take me weeks to finish.
14:10Two days?
14:13I have a lot to do and I'm hoping that I have enough time.
14:17This is hard.
14:19That's it for today.
14:21It's time to go home.
14:22Hell yeah.
14:23Good morning, sunshine.
14:24Let's do it.
14:25Straight to the machine.
14:26I know what I'm doing today.
14:27I'm doing the skirt as a short.
14:28Yesterday, I knew that I had to start from scratch.
14:29So now, I need to go with what I think is high fashion.
14:33I'm trying to decide how much ass I want to show.
14:34This is looking so good.
14:35But...
14:36I feel terrified that the biggest challenge is the biggest challenge.
14:38I'm trying to decide how much ass I want to show.
14:39This is looking so good.
14:40But...
14:41I feel terrified that the biggest challenge in my life is going to be presented to Jeannie Becker.
14:50Hey, everyone!
14:51Hey!
14:52The models are going to be here soon.
14:53I'm not sweating.
14:54I'm not sweating at all.
14:55Hi, Curtis.
14:56Hello!
14:57How's it going?
15:10This is a PeAir in Progress.
15:11Hey!
15:13The models are going to be here soon.
15:15I'm not sweating.
15:16I'm not sweating at all.
15:19Hi, Curtis.
15:20Hello.
15:21How's it going?
15:22This is a pannier in progress.
15:23I'm creating a whole universe with this look.
15:25I'm really inspired by historical silhouettes,
15:28like 17th century hip panniers,
15:30and bringing them into the modern fashion world.
15:32This is looking great.
15:34Just keep in mind, we want a chic first impression.
15:41Oh, I just looked .
15:44I'm seeing a nude body form.
15:47The models are going to be here soon.
15:50I feel like it's sewing time.
15:51Yes, it is.
15:52So I'm just kind of panicked.
15:56The individual pieces are all stitched up.
15:58Yes.
15:59I just have to put the bigger pieces together.
16:00I will hopefully have something for the models to try on.
16:03I'm scared.
16:04First impressions sometimes can either make or break you.
16:08I hope that the judges can see my personal take on what elegant is.
16:14I'm just nervous.
16:15I don't have the time to do that.
16:21The corset is going to be good.
16:23I think my secret weapon is my speed.
16:28I've been doing this for so long that I don't second guess myself.
16:31Like, that's gorgeous.
16:33I am half Chinese, half Scottish.
16:36And my Chinese family immigrated here in the 50s.
16:39And opened up a dry cleaner that is still there to this day.
16:41They're still working it.
16:42They have such a strong work ethic.
16:44So that's kind of always been instilled in me.
16:46Oh my God, so cool.
16:49That looks amazing.
16:52To be surrounded by such talented designers is intimidating.
16:56I feel like I'm going to throw up.
17:01I just don't think that it will work as like a short.
17:06I don't know what to do with my design.
17:08I have a million ideas going on in my head.
17:11But I have all of this beautiful patchwork denim.
17:14So I'm going to sew it together and I'll figure it out.
17:18I just need to trust the process.
17:20Hi, Little Feather.
17:25Hi.
17:26So what else are we doing here?
17:30We're making it deadly.
17:34Okay.
17:35Right now what I'm seeing is like a jacket that was a jacket
17:38that still looks like a jacket.
17:40And similarly the pant.
17:42I'm not really focused on the pants.
17:45The judges are going to be looking also at the pants.
17:48Yeah.
17:49Because what I don't want is for them to look at this
17:51and be like, this is the jacket that they gave her
17:54and she only just added a collar.
17:56It's like, did she do anything?
17:58Then that means it's like factory ready in my eyes.
18:01Factory ready.
18:02Yes.
18:03We need runway ready.
18:05All right.
18:18Like I missed it.
18:21I missed the boat.
18:23You know?
18:27I feel like she's correct.
18:31That's why it hurts so much.
18:33I just have no choice but to take deep breaths
18:36and remember why I'm here for the runway.
18:39And it's like, wait a minute.
18:41You're on freaking Project Runway
18:44and you got to be ready for the runway.
18:46You okay?
18:48I'm good.
18:49All good.
18:51The vision is coming to life.
18:54Oh my God.
18:55I know.
18:56Oh, I messed up.
19:00How?
19:01Wrong?
19:02Side?
19:03Yeah.
19:04When I was patching the train fabric together,
19:07I didn't flip it the other way.
19:09I made a one skirt just facing one side
19:12and it's not right.
19:13I'm just going to make a full round circle skirt
19:15instead of a train.
19:16Screw it.
19:17Oh my goodness.
19:18I'll make it work.
19:22I think I need a model.
19:24All right.
19:25Come on in.
19:26Models.
19:27Yes.
19:28Yay.
19:29They're so cute.
19:30Oh my goodness.
19:31Hello.
19:32Can you hug me?
19:33Yes.
19:34My token of.
19:35I'm just adding the finishing stitches to the skirt
19:37and then I want to fit you in quickly.
19:40Yes.
19:42Are you okay?
19:43You're surviving.
19:44You guys have 45 minutes.
19:47Make the most of it.
19:48The pressure is on.
19:49Good.
19:50I'm actually very impressed with how this fits you.
19:52Oh, yes.
19:54The dress looks amazing.
19:56It fits her like a glove.
19:58The fit is perfect.
19:59So now I just have to add the flowers in denim.
20:02How long is this going to take?
20:03A few hours.
20:05I just want you to be mindful of not having too many ideas.
20:11Focus on getting the dress really elegant.
20:15Mm-hmm.
20:16Yeah, it looks really cool.
20:17Do something with your arm.
20:19Yeah, there we go.
20:20Oh, wow.
20:21Yeah, it looks great.
20:22I'm super happy.
20:23My jacket is coming together.
20:25I love the pockets on the side.
20:28Now I have to put the grommets on the collar.
20:31I really love it.
20:32I love it.
20:33Oh, my God.
20:34This is so good.
20:35Yes.
20:36I'm so happy.
20:38I just worked so fast.
20:40You really don't have room to make mistakes here.
20:43And you have to take a gamble and hope it pays off.
20:45Oh, my God.
20:46I love it.
20:47Let me see from afar.
20:48Yes.
20:49My model is looking amazing in this outfit.
20:51They still have things to finish.
20:53But this is an introduction to me.
20:55It needs to look flawless.
20:56And I think I can do that.
20:58All right, let's get you changed off.
21:00Designers, the fitting is officially over.
21:03Models, I need you guys out.
21:05Okay, bye.
21:06See you tomorrow.
21:07Bye.
21:08First runway show is tomorrow.
21:12So stay focused and get it done.
21:17Good night.
21:18Yeah, I know we've got work to do.
21:21It looks like it's almost there, but I still have to hand sew it.
21:26It's my first runway tomorrow, and I do not want to be the first one to go home.
21:30So I'm hoping tomorrow I have enough time to polish everything up.
21:34All righty, folks.
21:37Time to wrap it up.
21:38Brilliant day, guys.
21:47All right, let's get it.
21:48Let's go runway two!
21:51Let's get started.
21:54It's the first runway of the entire competition.
21:57I'm feeling very secure.
21:59I just need to press the out of this dress.
22:02I need to distress the out of the hem.
22:05So I feel like I'm in a really great spot.
22:09Hey, designers.
22:11It is your very first runway day.
22:15Let's get your models in here.
22:17Look how good they look from the final.
22:22Great work, baby.
22:23We're gonna eat them.
22:24Designers, you have 30 minutes for your final fittings.
22:34The model is here, and I am nowhere near ready.
22:38I have to use half of my fitting time to sew this denim floral applique.
22:43It took forever.
22:44Has this been on the model yet this morning?
22:46Not yet.
22:47I'm going to fit her now.
22:48I've got so much to do.
22:49The hem has to be done.
22:51Do you think I should leave it raw?
22:52No.
22:53I would work on perfecting it.
22:54Even if the judges come close to it, we don't want them to be like,
22:58I want some of it.
23:03I am not ready.
23:04Sorry, girl.
23:05Don't worry.
23:06You're stuck with this kind of designer.
23:08I still have the zipper to put together.
23:10I still have the hem to do.
23:11I'm nervous as hell because I don't have something finished.
23:15I took the zipper off to fix it.
23:17Okay.
23:18Wow.
23:19Okay.
23:20We've got to close it up and we've got to get this chalk off because we have literally
23:2110 minutes.
23:22Okay.
23:23Get off.
23:24Get off, get off, get off.
23:25Hold on.
23:27Now turn to me.
23:28All right, designers.
23:29It's time to bring your models to the L'Oreal Paris Glam Room.
23:34So the whole idea is she's a good girl gone bad.
23:40So I mainly wanted her up.
23:45So for hair and makeup, I'm thinking we go 1920s glam.
23:49My staple product in my kit is the Panorama Mascara.
23:53It's going to fan out your lashes, giving you corner to corner volume.
23:57The eyes are going to look bigger and lifted.
24:01Let's go to the runway.
24:02Let's do this.
24:04It looks so good.
24:09All right, you're fraying the bottom?
24:10Yeah, I'm trying to.
24:12I feel like you're last minute trying to do something that you don't need to do.
24:17Last looks, everyone.
24:18Oh, .
24:19Just went right through.
24:21Okay, we're good.
24:23All right, designers.
24:24Let's go.
24:27Romano has a dress.
24:28I'm hoping that I'm at least safe.
24:31Let's get to the runway.
24:33Wish me luck.
24:34Yes.
24:35Yes.
24:36Yes.
24:37Yes.
24:38Hello, designers.
24:39Hi.
24:40Welcome to your first runway.
24:43Yeah.
24:44Tonight, first impressions are everything.
24:49Your challenge was to create a high fashion, all denim look that reflects your design DNA.
25:04We want to see your designer jeans.
25:05There are 12 of you now, but after tonight, only 11 will continue on in the competition.
25:20It's time to meet your judges.
25:22Fashion designer, Spencer Badu.
25:26Hey, designers.
25:27Journalist and fashion television legend, the Jeanne Becker.
25:32Hey, everybody.
25:33Hi.
25:34Great to see you all.
25:35And our special guest judge.
25:37He's dressed Viola Davis, Michelle Obama, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
25:42Please welcome designer Jason Wu.
25:45Hi, designers.
25:47We'll be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.
25:52Let's start the show.
25:54Wow.
25:55Yeah.
25:56Yeah.
25:58Oh, my gosh.
25:59Oh, my gosh.
26:00Oh, my gosh.
26:01Oh, my gosh.
26:02Oh, my gosh.
26:03Oh, my gosh.
26:04Oh, my gosh.
26:05Oh, my gosh.
26:06Oh, my gosh.
26:07So good.
26:12I have full body chills.
26:15The fit is fitting.
26:16The hat is sitting.
26:18This is a completely authentic expression of my experience as being a non-binary individual.
26:27I'm not used to making menswear at all, but this garment definitely represents my aesthetic,
26:33especially with the D-rings and the harnesses.
26:35It's so good, dude.
26:39I've really honed in on what my style is, and that's just rock and roll.
26:41I'm super proud.
26:42This look is powerful.
26:43The collar is sharp.
26:44I feel like it all came together.
26:46I feel like it all came together.
26:47I'm just so obsessed with my look.
26:49The ombre, the colors are working.
26:51The shape is working.
26:52The shape is working.
26:53It's a really proud moment.
26:54Anxiety is just through the roof.
26:55All I see is the imperfections, but the flow, the elegance.
26:57This is a definition of who I am as a designer.
26:58I just hope they see the views of my design.
26:59I'm just so obsessed with my look.
27:00I'm just so obsessed with my look.
27:01The ombre, the colors are working.
27:02The shape is working.
27:03The colors are working.
27:04The shape is working.
27:05It's a really proud moment.
27:10Anxiety is just through the roof.
27:16All I see is the imperfections, but the flow, the elegance.
27:21This is a definition of who I am as a designer.
27:24I just hope they see the beauty in what I made.
27:28My look is elegant.
27:38It's timeless.
27:39It's sophisticated.
27:40But did I do enough?
27:43I have some doubts.
27:49Oh, yeah.
27:50Yes.
27:51I am super proud of what I've created.
27:54This is very representative of who I am as a designer.
27:58With this look, I'm really trying to prove that I am one of the top competitors.
28:04You do that.
28:05You do that.
28:09It's amazing seeing my look come down the runway.
28:12This look screams Maya in every way.
28:16It plays with masculinity, femininity, historical references.
28:20I love it.
28:21I want to show the judges that my culture influences my fashion, but it can also be high fashion for the runway.
28:34The hood is a cultural design feature I learned from my great-grandmother.
28:40I hope they see something in my design.
28:49That corset looks so good on her.
28:51It's so snatched.
28:52It literally is hitting her in all the right places.
28:55And then the pants match perfectly.
29:00Head to toe denim.
29:01Canadian tuxedo to the max.
29:08I have come so far with this design.
29:10I made multiple garments.
29:13I have come back from the trenches and I produced something that I am proud of.
29:19My blood is draining from my body.
29:21Ooh.
29:27I love it.
29:28I've never seen a look like this before.
29:30I painted with fabric and I feel like I'm showing all of my technical skills that I've amassed through decades of fashion.
29:37How the f*** do that?
29:46It smells really good.
29:47Designers, please step up to the runway.
29:57Tonight, some of your looks spoke volumes, while others barely whispered.
30:05When I call your name, please step forward.
30:10Rome.
30:12Little Feather.
30:15Charles.
30:17Cat.
30:20Dallarumic.
30:22And...
30:24Delaine.
30:28If I called your name, you are in.
30:31And can leave the runway.
30:32Congratulations.
30:40Sorry.
30:43What a relief.
30:44Oh my goodness.
30:45That means the six of you make up the highest and the lowest scores.
30:51One of you will be our winner and one of you will be out.
30:56So let's look at one of our faves of the night.
30:58Oh.
30:59Thank the Lord.
31:00Yes.
31:01Oh my God.
31:02Curtis, I got flight attendant vibes out of this.
31:08I was looking at a lot of denim and it took me to a super masculine, tough work wear type area.
31:13Which then drew my mind to flip that completely on its head.
31:16This is an amazing representation of exactly what my designs are all about.
31:26Congratulations.
31:27I really love this.
31:29The structure, the style.
31:30This is truly couture worthy and you really did elevate denim to new heights.
31:37I couldn't even tell it was denim.
31:39This was a great piece.
31:40I think it really shows who you are as a designer.
31:43My only critique was the neckline at the back.
31:45It did feel a bit loose.
31:46I would just tighten that up.
31:48The hat looks good.
31:49A lot of times people ruin their looks.
31:51It's like that one accessory, you know?
31:53So I thought that was really nice, nicely done.
31:56Thank you, Curtis.
31:57Great job.
31:59And now let's see one of our least favorite looks of the night.
32:05The bottom.
32:07Foster, you brought flowers to the denim challenge.
32:10High fashion to me is simplicity and also timelessness.
32:13And I wanted to show the delicate side of denim by using a floral motif.
32:20I always appreciate the charm of a great applique.
32:25But I didn't understand why you decided to go for an unfinished hem.
32:30The top seems very like sophisticated, so detailed.
32:33And then at the bottom, that's an undone edge.
32:36I think it's just too many ideas in one dress.
32:38The biggest issue would be the fit.
32:40I just don't think it was flattering.
32:41Thank you, Foster.
32:43I don't know.
32:44I love his piece.
32:45Let's bring out another one of our favorite looks.
32:54Maya, you gave us a new romantic moment.
32:57Walk us through it.
32:58The Canadian tuxedo, to me, comes from that history of Canadian frontier
33:02and people needing really strong, durable materials to be able to survive.
33:06I wanted to bring that to the elevation of a night out.
33:10Night out.
33:11I want that jacket.
33:12I want the look.
33:13Let's put it on my body now.
33:14The jacket was really nice.
33:15I like the cusset.
33:16It is a nice way to bring softness into denim.
33:20My only critique is I don't think the bag was necessary.
33:23Did you make the bag?
33:24No, I did not make the bag.
33:25You know, sometimes when you design, you just kind of have to edit.
33:28The bag, to me, gave this outfit another level of story.
33:33I think that's one of the biggest compliments an outfit can get.
33:37Thanks, Maya.
33:38This next look was one of our least favorites.
33:43Oh, no.
33:48Namo, you kept this look pretty simple.
33:55It's an expression of myself, which is simplicity and elegance.
33:59And I also like flowy things.
34:01I just really felt that you weren't pushing it enough.
34:04What's new here?
34:06This is a look that I've seen a gazillion times.
34:09I'm all for a simple dress.
34:11But when you do simple, it has to be perfect.
34:14And this was not.
34:15The corset isn't as impeccable as some of your peers.
34:19Yeah, initially when I saw the look, it felt really safe.
34:21I didn't really feel like you came through in this dress.
34:24I would have loved to see a bit more risk-taking.
34:26You are subtle. You are quiet.
34:28So maybe this is you.
34:30Like I do do more couture detailed work.
34:34Yes.
34:35Give me that, Namo.
34:37Thank you, Namo.
34:39And our final favorite look of the night.
34:43Yay!
34:46Leland, tell us how you brought so many elements together here.
34:50So one thing I really wanted to do was incorporate the light acid wash
34:54and really go for a fashion moment here.
34:57It made me giddy.
34:59I felt this was the Britney Spears Mad Max moment.
35:03Love, exactly.
35:04That deconstructive sort of cape, it looked quite gorgeous.
35:07When I saw it come down the runway, I noticed the shoes and I was like,
35:09whoa, this is like a whole look.
35:11So for a first impression, I'm really excited to see what we have in store.
35:15Well, it's a wow. No question.
35:18The corset is perfection.
35:20One critique I would have is I think the pants are a little over ruched, but it's hard to do messy.
35:26And I think you've done a really good job.
35:28Thank you, Leland.
35:29Thank you, Leland.
35:31And our final lowest score.
35:35But she's a 10.
35:36She is a 10.
35:37Hi.
35:38So, Naomi, patchwork and a belarue.
35:41Interesting combo.
35:43Let's walk through it.
35:44I prototyped multiple things and I wasted hours.
35:49And when I finally decided what I wanted to do, I didn't quite have the time to execute it the way I'd like to.
35:55To me, I see two different personalities here.
35:57I think the little bolero jacket shows some promise.
36:00The dress is where you fall short.
36:02I think this was maybe overly ambitious.
36:04And right now, I don't really know who you are as a designer.
36:07I think it just seemed a bit confusing.
36:10Maybe you have to develop your voice a bit more.
36:13I like the bolero.
36:14I thought that worked.
36:15A lot of the rest of the dress really fell apart, especially, you know, from the hip down.
36:20It just looked like a mess.
36:23The bottom part, it just didn't go with the top.
36:25And you've got to give me that storytelling.
36:28Thank you, Naomi.
36:30Thank you so much.
36:32Thank you, designers.
36:35You've given us a lot to think about.
36:37It's time for some tough decisions.
36:39You can leave the runway.
36:48Hello.
36:49Hi.
36:50Hey.
36:53Hi.
36:54Hi.
36:55Okay, judges, our top three.
36:57Leland, Curtis, and Maya.
37:00Who do we think should win?
37:01They're all so good and so promising.
37:03Leland's, it was really nice.
37:05I mean, the jacket, cape situation, I mean, that's really impeccably made.
37:09And the corset, very clean.
37:11Leland was impressive.
37:12Just the sheer amount of things that Leland pumped out.
37:15You can really see that he put everything on the table.
37:17Three different pieces that could live on their own, but they actually danced cohesively together.
37:23Maya, I loved this look.
37:26There was so much compelling storytelling.
37:28Loved it.
37:29I really understood the world that she was creating.
37:32I knew the character.
37:33Like, she really delivered in terms of putting an outfit that worked for the model.
37:39There's a point of view.
37:40But there's a point of view with Curtis as well.
37:42That was a shape that I kind of thought was fantastic.
37:45I mean, the silhouette, the craftsmanship.
37:47Stunning.
37:48Really well executed.
37:49Details were amazing.
37:50The little hat.
37:51It was meticulous and obviously crafted by someone who really knows what they're doing.
37:57Okay, I think we have our winner.
37:59Now, who do we think should be going home?
38:01Naimo, Foster, or Naomi?
38:04Let's start with Naimo.
38:06It really just looked like a black dress.
38:08Yeah.
38:09I didn't feel like there was a sense of innovation.
38:11I mean, if you're going to give me a black dress, it better be impeccable.
38:14Yeah.
38:15And it was not.
38:16It was messy.
38:17She's just the one that just seems to fall to the back.
38:20And I know it's not about attitude, but there is something about attitude.
38:23Well, there is.
38:24And you can see the attitude in Naomi's clothing.
38:27I like the bolero.
38:28I thought it was kind of cute.
38:29Yeah, the bolero was the best part of the dress.
38:31The best part.
38:32Put the end.
38:33It's really a question of a lack of design sophistication.
38:38I think that's Naomi's problem.
38:40And I do think Foster already has that design sophistication.
38:44But, you know, like, that dress was terrible.
38:46It didn't fit.
38:47The flowers look very crafty, but not in a good way.
38:50In a good way.
38:51I don't know who he is as a designer looking at that dress.
38:53But I want to see a little bit more.
38:55The raw hem, I would have loved to see it, you know, cleaned.
38:58Maybe a bit of a blind hem or...
39:00Blind hem wasn't going to help that dress, let's face it.
39:02It looks like we made our decision.
39:14Curtis, Maya, and Leland.
39:18You've established yourselves as the ones to watch in this competition.
39:22But, there can only be one winner.
39:26The winner.
39:27The winning designer is...
39:35Leland.
39:36Hey!
39:37Oh!
39:38The buttons are popping!
39:39Yeah!
39:40Yay!
39:41Yay!
39:42Aw!
39:43I can't believe I won.
39:44Like, what?
39:45I'm happy that I literally showcased myself and, like, my art.
39:49So welcome.
39:52Oh, my God.
39:53That means, Curtis and Maya, you are also in.
39:55The three of you can leave the runway.
39:57Thank you all.
39:58Congratulations.
40:06That's so good.
40:07I'm so proud of you, honey.
40:08I told you.
40:09Naimo, Foster, and Naomi.
40:16Unfortunately, one of you will be out.
40:23Foster, you are in.
40:27You can leave the runway.
40:29Thank you so much.
40:34It all comes down to this.
40:39Naomi, you're all denim distressed us and not in the right way.
40:49I'm sorry, but you are out.
40:51Oh.
40:52Oh, my God.
40:54No, you deserve this.
40:56Naimo, you're still in.
40:59You can leave the runway.
41:01I'm just honestly glad to be here.
41:03I met amazing people.
41:04I'm very motivated, and I know I have a very bright future ahead of me.
41:08I agree.
41:09You're gonna kill it.
41:10Thanks, guys.
41:11Bye.
41:12Bye.
41:13We'll kill it.
41:15Take care.
41:16Bye.
41:17Wait, let me hit my pose.
41:18Yes.
41:19Go, queen.
41:20Love.
41:21Hmm.
41:22Uh-oh.
41:23Here she comes.
41:25It was so lovely to be amongst all of you.
41:28This experience would not have been the same without you.
41:31Hi, guys.
41:32Aurora.
41:33I'm really proud of you.
41:36You have a lot of creativity.
41:38You have a lot of courage.
41:39Can I get a hug?
41:40Yes.
41:41Can we get a group hug?
41:42Yes.
41:43I think I've grown way more than I expected to grow.
41:47This experience was overwhelming, and I let my mind get the best of me.
41:53But this is just the beginning for me.
41:55Maybe I'll be back.
41:56Next time on Project Runway Canada, I'm pairing you up with content creator for your very first
42:07real client challenge.
42:08Oh, my God.
42:09It's a client challenge.
42:10This week is about showing them what we got.
42:14Oh.
42:15I want to see lots of glamour tomorrow.
42:17At the end of the day, it's about keeping the client happy.
