00:00out to the river islands guest line we go presented by great clips in sports success is about team
00:05effort and the same is true for your hair great clips it's going to be great and here he is coach
00:11hey coach what's going on this afternoon i'm good i'm just on my way to the airport uh heading for
00:17denver and i'm excited for our game tomorrow night yeah this crazy schedule continues and i just want
00:24to throw this out there i don't want to put you in a position where it sounds like you're complaining
00:30because i get it everyone's got a schedule but i heard for example just as an example nick fredell
00:36our warrior insider earlier today said in all of his years covering the league this is maybe one of
00:41the worst starts he's ever seen schedule wise for a team what what is your reaction to that how can
00:49you bring our fans inside what you guys are experiencing so far well i agree with nick i
00:56don't think i've ever seen anything like this where uh we've had uh so many games in different cities
01:02and you know no consistent theme to it you know um back to backs but um you know we fly to the
01:10midwest for two games and then back for one home game then back on the road um and then back for a
01:17home game and then it's uh it's nuts when you when you add it all up um i believe it's you know 15
01:24games in uh 26 days something like that and uh in in um like 10 cities so it's it's really i've never
01:34seen anything like it um but it is true every single team has to deal with uh a stretch uh in this in
01:43the season where it's just really rough and uh i kind of like getting it out of the way early
01:48i think uh we're going to survive this and um the second half of the schedule really lines up a lot
01:55better for us and we'll be in we'll be in much better shape is that really the message then right
02:00now because i'm looking at the next eight games you've got eight in 15 days and you've got seven
02:06road and as you mentioned you have at denver back home and then a long road trip is that partly the
02:12message uh to the team of like let's survive this and we'll be better later i haven't really
02:18said that to them yet what i have talked about is um you know the early part of the season we're
02:25playing a lot of people obviously um you know we want to uh we want to be able to uh to to get
02:32everybody ramped up to the point where you know they can play consistently high minutes or you know
02:40obviously our starters are the ones who uh we need to get to that point and that's probably been
02:47the the most difficult part of this stretch you like sometimes you'll get a stretch like this in
02:52the middle of the season but to have so many games at the very beginning of the season when you're not
02:57ramped up yet and um and that's it's just kind of surprising that we would we would have this but i
03:04like our depth um about last night our depth showed you know we we had every chance to win
03:10that game without our three best players and um and the reason we had an opportunity to to do that
03:16is because we've got a lot of good players so we just have to tighten some things up and and uh
03:22and i think we're going to be in really good shape going forward yeah steve let's dive into last night
03:27a little bit and first and foremost just your impressions of of the way those young guys went
03:33out there and played and the fact that a few of them at least offensively really shined
03:37yeah i mean i i think it showed in the first half how potent we can be uh when we keep the game simple
03:45uh and we take care of the ball and and we run i mean that was our fastest paced game
03:50of the season by design you know without without jimmy steph and dre we got to push the ball um
03:58but the message is you got to push the ball and get spaced and then make simple decisions which we did
04:04you know for most of the first half and then i thought two turnovers really hurt us and and this
04:10is kind of the nature of the game today because of the pace because of the three-point shooting
04:15all it takes is a couple of mistakes that turn into threes at the other end and especially on the
04:20road the whole game shifts and so we just have to pound it into these guys brains over and over
04:28again our whole team not just the young guys but everybody uh that if we if we keep turning the ball
04:36over like we are right now we're in trouble but if we take care of it like we did last year after we
04:43got jimmy butler and if we defend without fouling like we did last year when we got jimmy butler
04:50then we're going to be really good 23 and 7 down the stretch last year and that's the only thing
04:56that changed honestly was jimmy controlled the game because he would take care of the ball
05:01and he would get fouled and we were the ones going to the foul line instead of our opponents so
05:07that's what it comes down to for this team and we have to get there we we really believe we can get
05:13there steve uh not not to ask you to predict when people are going to be under the weather but but
05:18we know you guys have certainly a plan to to manage the time and the age of some of your star players
05:25your best guess how many kind of last night games do you think you're going to have this year
05:32i don't think anybody can guess um because uh we wouldn't have guessed that steve got sick you know
05:42um you know he's unlikely to to play tomorrow in denver i still pretty sick um but these things
05:49happen during the season whether it's a an injury or an illness whatever it is i mean you know guys
05:57miss games so every year's different you don't really know what's coming so that's why you have to
06:02rely on you know your fundamentals and your decision making and and uh and then finding
06:09really good lineup combinations and being able to to win some games like last night you know i think
06:16last year i'm not mistaken we were like seven and five without steve um you got to do that you have
06:23to be able to find ways to win without your best players and last night was a great lesson for our
06:29young guys they they gave themselves every chance to win because they played hard they shared the ball
06:34they competed but we got to be uh more solid we we cannot turn the ball over with careless decision
06:41making and trying to make plays that aren't there and expect to win and that's partly uh i think through
06:48experience and all that but i wonder about steph curry is he going to be on the flight today to denver
06:54and will it be kind of a wait and see moment whether or not he can be healthy enough to to go
06:58uh barring some unforeseen uh you know last second change i don't expect him to be on the
07:06the flight today so uh we don't we you know he's still sick you know we don't need him to get
07:12everybody else sick we don't need him to fly to altitude uh to denver for you know while he's still
07:18trying to get healthy now maybe it bleeds on a few more days he misses another game we we can't have
07:26can't have that happen and you know whether it's an illness or an injury we've got to be really smart
07:31uh with with all of our players uh so that we navigate the season the right way yeah and that's
07:38i mean that that makes perfect sense steve kerr here on uh willow and dibs on 95 7 the game i want to
07:44talk about will richard last night and what he showed you and i know that he's been you know
07:48possibly ticketed for the g league and he comes out and he has 30 points does that change maybe the
07:54organized organizational plans about where will will go
07:57well will will fits in perfectly with everything that i'm discussing right now you know the turnovers
08:06the decision making the spacing uh the ability to dribble pass and shoot and process but you know
08:14those four things lead to uh good good decision making as a team as a group uh i can draw a play
08:23out of timeout and put will in any one of the five positions i can drop the play for him to come off
08:30the screen and shoot i can drop the play for him to handle the ball and make the decision i can
08:36drop the play to have it set a screen so when you get guys like this that provide really solid play
08:43and stability this is what has made our team go around stefan draymond i've said this to you guys
08:50a million times you know who are those stabilizers out there in our you know in this decade run that
08:57we've had you know it's andre gadala it's sean livingston you know it's david west it's so you need
09:04them at different positions because steph and dre need stability around them to get them organized
09:12and to to help them navigate the game and to get steph the ball um so will richard fits all those he
09:20checks all those boxes so you know i i think the the whole the whole team the whole organization
09:28recognizes this which means uh everybody's on notice take care of the ball because we got people
09:36who who will do that and they're ready to step in it's interesting steve because will described to us
09:43last week when we sort of asked him how he sees himself in this whole thing and he described it as
09:50like the dirty work garbage man lunch pail type stuff do everything and and maybe he is that but then he
09:56starts and he scores 30 and that doesn't say dirty work lunch pail to people that says whoa you kind
10:02of pop a little bit so do you think that that maybe even from his view your view the organizational view
10:08that that maybe there's a little bit more going there on the offensive arsenal than than than you guys
10:14thought absolutely um you know you don't really expect to see this from uh a guy who was what the 57th pick
10:24or something um but what we've seen now for you know since the start of camp as i said dribble pass shoot
10:32process those are those are the most important things uh a player can have and then you put that
10:38into uh you know a body of of a guy who can guard multiple spots and plays with the energy that he does
10:45the intelligence um what a steal what an incredible pick by mike gunlevy and and uh the scouting department
10:52and uh tell you when you think about our group the last few years in the draft um what they've been
10:58able to accomplish is really impressive last night jk was you know kind of asked to be the primary
11:05scorer without steph and and jimmy and draymond as well did you give him a different message going
11:10into the game and what do you think of the way jk played as kind of a primary option well the main
11:16message was you know without steph and dray he was going to get the ball a lot more and we initiated
11:22a lot of our offense last night uh with jk and uh i thought he did a great job of creating points for
11:29us and i thought it was also a great lesson for him that there there has to be a balance to his game
11:35you know he had the five turnovers and uh you know one of them was that key turnover that i mentioned
11:41you know uh late second quarter we had all the momentum he tried to dribble through his guy when
11:46there was nothing there i think it turned into a dunk at the other end or a three so you know this
11:52is all part of the processing of the game and the understanding of what wins and what loses and this is
11:59where he has to make his biggest improvement is just uh recognizing you know sometimes when you're
12:06so talented and you have so many possibilities at your disposal it's it makes the game harder because
12:13you you think you can do anything and i think most young talented players have to you know kind of go
12:19through a process like this where like yeah i i know i can do everything but i really have to make
12:25the right play over and over again and you know it took steph some years to figure that out and and even
12:33to this day you know steph does some wild stuff out there um but if the ratio is is right you know
12:41it's the old manu ginobili stuff with pop like manu was going to do three three crazy things every game
12:46but if if he did 15 things that uh that were that counteracted it the ratio is good enough that
12:54where you allow that and that's that's what i look for with all of our guys is uh does the decision
13:00making and the processing uh allow for us to control the game that's why jimmy butler came
13:06in and changed our team last year because uh suddenly we were in control of every game so
13:12that's what we have to find as a group that's what uh some of our younger players jk bp also you know he
13:19needs to be a low turnover guy um our younger guys need to learn that and last night that's why i
13:25really liked last night's game from that process that that that thought you know i'd much rather
13:31would have won but it's right there for us guys like you know if our decision making isn't better
13:37um we're not going to win the game steve kerr with us here on weather and dibs as he is every single
13:42week on 95.7 the game i mean to that end steve i mean i think you can even hear it in your voice
13:47a lot of the fans feel the same we look at all this and and and i think we see puzzle pieces we
13:54often like the way the group is playing but then you look at the record and it's five and four and
13:59the west is just so damn stacked it's so kind of daunting to look at so especially when you factor
14:06in what happened last year what's the sense of urgency early in the year to kind of set it up so
14:13that you guys don't have to chase in the second half well yeah yeah i mean of course i mean we've
14:20given a couple games away for sure and um there there's absolutely a focus on that um but you can't
14:28just say you know hey we we you know we got to get urgent here um there has to be a process that leads
14:36to the execution that that leads to the wins and um so right now the focus is on the process
14:44take care of the damn ball and we can help you with that as coaches with spacing and you know our
14:51offensive scheming what we're doing um you know that's a collaboration uh but ultimately um you know
15:00will adapt or die i mean the league has changed and everyone's playing with pace and three-point
15:06shooting i would say seven or eight years ago we could turn it over 18 times and it didn't matter
15:12because we were going to we were going to shoot threes and play fast and out talent people now you
15:20can play you can play one of the worst teams in the league and they will beat you by shooting making
15:2420 threes and playing really fast if you turn it over and so our entire team needs to understand
15:32this message and obviously i'm you know i've given them that message i'm not sharing it with you guys
15:38without sharing it with them but i want them to hear this too on the radio like i you know we have
15:44to adapt to what the league is doing right now and that means take care of the ball handle handle
15:52transition at both ends and uh if we do that i love our team i think we're going to go places
15:58yeah i mean it could be a struggle and i wonder steve like how much is this year in the regular
16:04season more about like fighting for the six as opposed to fighting for the one seed
16:09yeah i mean i i think the uh unless you're you know okc um everybody in the west is thinking
16:19hey you know let's make sure we're in the top six i mean i i told our team before the season let's
16:25finish in the top four you know let's have a home court advantage in the in the first round um
16:31and so you know top six is obviously where everybody wants to end up nobody wants to be in the play-in
16:39um but i think we're good enough where we should be thinking top four home court um but we haven't
16:48gotten there yet uh you know schedule's been tough um we're uh we're we haven't settled our rotation yet
16:57um you know i we haven't allowed for guys to get you know comfortable yet in their roles because the
17:05lineups have changed so we're a little bit scattered right now but nothing that uh we can't
17:12fix and and get on track so like i said i i i'm i couldn't be more excited about our team and our
17:19talent level and our ability to be good but we we have some work to do steve a couple individuals i
17:26want to ask you about and one is al horford right now with what you're seeing from him what what is the
17:31level of concern if any with with what you're seeing from him so far zero concern um because
17:37what i'm watching is uh the way he's moving i said this after the game and i'm sure people laughed
17:44um but it was it was real it was honest i thought he played a really good game last night the ball just
17:50didn't go in um all of his shots looked good i thought every single one of them was going and uh
17:56none of them went so he's just in one of those uh stages right now and it happens in every sport
18:03you know baseball player you know who uh who's to the ball's just you know coming off it's bad hard
18:09but it's going right two people uh it's um nothing's going elsewhere right now and it doesn't shock me
18:17because it is really hard to go to a new team but i'm watching the way he's moving i'm watching
18:23uh his decision making how smart this guy is uh he's going to be just fine i wouldn't worry about
18:30out well and then the other guy and this is the flip side answer hey what is this little change
18:34that moses moody made in his three-point shot because maybe everybody should do it the ball
18:39keeps going in what what are you seeing differently from him so far this year well i think he's getting
18:45it off quicker i think you know that's really been our focus the last few years is um you know no
18:51hesitation and speeding up the delivery a little bit his first few years in the league it just felt
18:57like um he was taking too long to get the shot off and he's worked really hard i think he's better
19:03shooting it on the move now uh but he's playing with a ton of confidence you know i had a rough camp i
19:09mean he was going to be in our starting lineup to begin the year um for sure you can see his on ball
19:16defense is uh is the best on the team i mean poking the ball away from devin booker three or four times
19:23stealing it from him the other night uh you just feel moses's defensive presence and then he's a great
19:30fit obviously you know next to to our best players because of the catch and shoot and and uh you know
19:37basically taking care of the ball for the most part so great to see moses in a good groove and um
19:43we we will rely heavily on him going forward uh steve one more really important one and i think this is
19:49mainly about accountability uh last night you referenced the fact that you don't believe that
19:55you've coached your three and six fantasy team very well i'll share with you here in the 95 7 the game
20:01league i'm one of these multiple league guys steve but in the 95 7 the game league i am oh and nine
20:07oh and nine but i i'm my goodness i know but oh boy i've been blaming my players so i like i i'd like
20:15you to help me uh you know with with the whole accountability thing because i think i've been
20:20coaching them up and they just suck yeah you know i feel your pain but oh and nine is virtually
20:26impossible don't you have to like fall into a win somewhere along the line you i'm kind of leaning
20:32into it now and i'm going to see if i could just pull this thing off and goose the whole year steve
20:37i just think you know you holding yourself accountable you know your guys will read that
20:42and they will they will actually appreciate you for it and they'll they'll play a little harder for
20:47you um i mean jeez boy i'll give it a try would you talk to them steve can we set that up no no no
20:55that's your job you're the coach you get you you know that's with with being the coach comes a lot
20:59of responsibility yeah i mean can he flip the spread on a fantasy team i don't even know what that looks
21:05like steve you know you could you could also go the angry route you know just go into the locker
21:11room and start firing footballs everywhere yeah here i've been eating the spread instead of flipping
21:18ah yeah there you go it's uh it's my bad um all right steve uh great stuff we look forward to
21:24denver tomorrow night we appreciate it as always thank you all right thanks guys take care
