Steiny and Guru dive deep into Jonathan Kuminga's performance since moving to the Atlanta Hawks. Despite a flashy start, Kuminga’s numbers and role seem eerily similar to his time in the Bay. Did the Warriors move on too soon, or are we seeing the same patterns emerge? Plus, Guru shares why he’s not ready to let go of the "spouse" analogy just yet.

00:00All right, I'm back in the swing of things now.
00:02You're back, and maybe Curry's back.
00:06Man, go figure.
00:08I mean, that's really what's left for the Warriors, right?
00:10Steph Curry comes back.
00:12They try to hold on to the ninth seed
00:14and go ahead and win two play-in games.
00:17How realistic does that sound right now?
00:20It sounds realistic to me, but again,
00:23everything has to, like what you keep in your shower,
00:26that it has to jail.
00:28No, the jail.
00:28You know what?
00:29I don't use that.
00:30And they had it, and it was again at the Airbnb.
00:33We stayed in Puerto Rico.
00:34Was it nice?
00:35It was all right.
00:36It was pretty good.
00:37Yeah, it was good.
00:37You didn't put nothing on IG?
00:38No.
00:39That's a real vacation.
00:40Go ahead.
00:43Shower gel.
00:44Give me the bar of soap.
00:45Yeah.
00:45I got to have the bar of soap.
00:47I'm with you.
00:47Shower gel, you use so much of it.
00:51Yeah, I don't like it.
00:51And it doesn't lather like a good bar of soap.
00:55I got you, man.
00:56You got to put two handfuls and, you know,
00:58work on one area, if you know what I mean.
01:01And then you let that rinse.
01:03And then you put another handful or two under the armpits each,
01:07around the ears.
01:07You know, but it's wasteful.
01:10Yeah.
01:10I've gotten out what is still on me.
01:12I didn't use so much like, damn.
01:14Give me the bar of soap.
01:15Just give me the Irish spring.
01:16What if you're sharing the bar of soap?
01:19Or coast.
01:20I like coast.
01:21I'm a dove guy.
01:23Coast lathers.
01:24What do you mean?
01:25Did Evan say share?
01:27Don't you get it?
01:27Well, you're on an Airbnb with three other people.
01:30There's only one bar of soap.
01:31It's my family.
01:32But we have more than one shower in there.
01:35But I'm just saying, gel is.
01:38Yeah.
01:39Well, that's what they need to do.
01:42Gel.
01:42Yeah.
01:43You worried about Horford?
01:44No.
01:44See, it's always about somebody with a wearing uniform.
01:46What's wrong with him?
01:48Calf tightness.
01:49Okay.
01:51Porzingis and Melton are probable tonight.
01:53So that's a good piece of news.
01:56What are you feeling today, Goo?
01:58No, seriously.
01:59I'm Jonathan Kaminga doing Saturday.
02:01It was one of his worst basketball games, but he was pressing.
02:04Why?
02:04And I do.
02:05Just trying too hard.
02:07But I'll say this.
02:09What I didn't like about the game.
02:11Okay.
02:12Is what happened after.
02:14And this probably makes me different.
02:15They showed a lot of love.
02:17The players, Kaminga, everybody.
02:20But I get mad because I'm a guy that didn't want this guy moved.
02:25So miss me with all that.
02:27Miss me with all.
02:28Oh, we're as tight as a button on a fat man's stomach on his suit jacket.
02:36Because obviously it didn't work and he got up out of here.
02:39But I just thought a lot was being made with the aftermath after Atlanta kicked our ass of,
02:45oh, everybody likes Kaminga.
02:46I always thought it was that.
02:48It was just now the coach and the player.
02:51So, you know, maybe I'm just feeling down because that's how the team is playing.
02:56You mentioned five of six.
02:58But I just like, I guess you got to find something to promote when you're losing, right?
03:05So I just, Stan, you know me.
03:07I'm a lover, not a fighter.
03:09I got what they were doing.
03:11But I thought it got too much run when we got ran out to jail.
03:15Yeah.
03:16I mean, was that good?
03:16He would still be here.
03:17Yeah, I mean, the one thing I realize is that in a game like that, okay, so you got Atlanta.
03:24They're, what, six or seven?
03:26Hottest history.
03:27Yeah.
03:27You got the Warriors who are nine or ten.
03:30It's March.
03:31There's really not a lot going on.
03:33The only interesting aspect of that game is Kaminga going up against his former team.
03:40And so that was going to be the big story no matter what.
03:43And I'm sure the players, their message was that we like this guy.
03:46It just didn't work out.
03:48Which I already knew, thought, you know.
03:51What I'm more interested in is, you know, I know he got off to a good start.
03:57But I just looked at his numbers with Atlanta.
04:02And they're very similar to what the numbers were at Golden State.
04:06In fact, he's playing less.
04:08He's playing fewer minutes.
04:09Right.
04:10But how much of that is this new load management or injury?
04:14Like, there's something there with that to me.
04:17But I got you.
04:18And Evan and I talked about it while you were gone about, you know, him smiling and being in a
04:23better place.
04:23But when you break it down thus far, he hasn't got, quote, unquote, the bigger role.
04:30No, he hasn't.
04:31In fact, Saturday night, Jalen Johnson doesn't play.
04:36Oh, my gosh.
04:37I thought he would start.
04:38Like, Kaminga doesn't even start.
04:40Yeah.
04:40And so, again, I'm not, you know, I'm not here to say that the Warriors won the trade and Kaminga's
04:47not very good.
04:48But, I mean, essentially, isn't he the same player that he was here for the Atlanta Hawks?
04:55Well, Quinn Snyder, the Atlanta Hawks head coach, said he wants Kaminga to do what he wants all his players
05:01to do, play defense and run.
05:04Rebound and run is one of the two, all of whom I'm sure Quinn would take.
05:07But the bottom line is I don't have time to focus in and hone in on what's going on with
05:13Kaminga
05:14because I still think that bone bruise has something to do with his availability.
05:20But the bottom line is that game was like Kaminga's worst game where fans call and go in on him
05:27here.
05:28But that was to be expected because he got off to a good start.
05:31But like I said, partner, we got our own problems.
05:34And what was your bigger point in saying that?
05:36Like, are you shocked a little bit?
05:38Or do you give some credence to me saying, I don't think he's all the way healthy, that knee?
05:43Well, I mean, I look at it as if.
05:45Because he was wincing in that game, too.
05:47Yeah, I mean, if he may have knee issues.
05:51I mean, he's played seven games with the Hawks.
05:55But to me, I look at the Hawks, and I don't really want to, you know, get too deep into
06:01this.
06:02But what are they going to do?
06:04Like, he's under – the Hawks have a team option for Kaminga for next year for $25 million.
06:10What are they going to do?
06:11What if he becomes their Iguodala, their young Iguodala, and he's their sixth man,
06:16like a Lou Williams or something like that?
06:19Because, again, it got so stinky here in regard to relationships.
06:24Let's just put the rat on the table brought to you by Echo Pest Control.
06:27First one since you've been back.
06:28The relationship that matters the most, obviously, was his head coach and J.K.
06:34So maybe less is more in this instance if that's what it is in regard to the distribution of minutes.
06:42But the bottom line is he feels better about where he's at.
06:46If that means he feels wanted, then maybe, you know, he doesn't need a big slice of the pizza.
06:51I'm sure he wants it, but we'll know by the All-Star break next year just what I think his
06:58future with the Atlanta Hawks is going to be.
07:00But I feel like he's got every opportunity to come off the bench.
07:03But I sat there –
07:05Like, think about that, though.
07:06Yeah.
07:06Just think about that for a sec.
07:07Yeah.
07:07He'll have every opportunity to come off the bench.
07:10And –
07:11But if you look at –
07:12He didn't want to come off the bench here.
07:13Yeah.
07:13I got you.
07:14But what does that tell you?
07:16It tells me that he's not – at least two teams don't consider him a starting player, and neither of
07:25those teams are championship-caliber teams.
07:28They're teams that are, you know, one team's sixth or seventh in a conference, the other team's ninth in a
07:33conference, and he's coming off the bench for both of those teams.
07:38So, like, what are we really talking about with losing Kaminga?
07:45Oh, we're talking about a whole lot.
07:47I don't know.
07:48Yeah.
07:48I mean, you know, it's too – we're talking about a whole lot.
07:52And we got to let enough time go by, let his career still grow, and then we can double back
07:58and have a better idea of what he's going to be and what he is.
08:02But let's just say he's the number two in In-N-Out, and he's gone, then we can start saying,
08:09man, what did the Warriors truly lose?
08:11But when it's all said and done and the dust settles, the bottom line is I don't care what he
08:16goes to be, we blew that pick.
08:18Yeah, and that was a seventh pick.
08:20You blew the pick.
08:21But, you know.
08:22If you leave a spouse, do you really care if she gets with somebody else?
08:26Yes.
08:26Yes, you do.
08:27And I don't want to hear any differently.
08:29I don't want to hear any differently.
08:30When an ex-girlfriend or boyfriend finds another partner, you don't want them to be a gazillionaire and live happily
08:39ever after.
08:40You don't.
08:41I would honestly, if you truly care about that person and their well-being and you didn't work out, there
08:46are some grown-ups out here that would love to see that.
08:49I think there's a big difference between, you know.
08:52So you're insecure.
08:53That person would be insecure if you didn't want to see them with, okay, then go get with a rich
08:57dude or a rich gal.
08:58No.
08:58What's that got to do with you?
08:59You still keep moving.
09:01Live in your movie.
09:01No, if I had a partner and we were having a falling out, and I said, listen, some of the
09:14reasons we're having a falling out, you know, I'm not blameless, but, you know, some of the reasons we're having
09:20a falling out is because you're not doing some things that any other partner is going to expect from you.
09:28So, bye-bye.
09:30Now, my girl, Kaminga, goes to another team, and I'm like, she's having the same issues there.
09:38So you would feel better?
09:39I would feel a little bit.
09:41Well, and I don't know if now's the time because he's only played seven games.
09:45Even if he was averaging 35, I know people out there like snickering, but I'm telling you, I would not
09:51be like, oh, boy, I already told you what I feel about Kaminga and his upside.
09:55It's just going to take some time.
09:56Well, okay.
09:57Now, if Kaminga's upside is just going to take some time, why were the Warriors not able to take more
10:04time?
10:04That I don't know.
10:05I don't either.
10:06And what I do know is they're devoid of talent.
10:10His ass had no business leaving this team.
10:13When you talk about it from a talent standpoint, you can understand that.
10:18He's still at the Embryo stages.
10:2024 years old.
10:22He's still growing.
10:22Well, he's more talented than Reese Asche, but he doesn't play in front of Reese Asche.
10:25And he was more talented than a lot of dudes on this team, but he wasn't playing.
10:29Right.
10:2916 DNPs, but just give it some time.
10:32I still think I got you on the spouse day because I would want, if I truly, if we didn't
10:37work out oil and water and there was no hate, don't be the best version of yourself.
10:42And if you married a rich guy, I wouldn't look myself in the mirror and be like, I'm a loser.
10:46Even if I worked at Food for Less and wasn't making a lot of money.
10:51I'm just, you know what I mean?
10:52No, but to me, the point isn't, like, I don't root against Jonathan Kaminga.
11:00But you're judging to see to make you feel better or worse.
11:05If Jonathan Kaminga, like, you know, everybody throws, you throw around the numbers.
11:08Oh, 20 and 8.
11:1020 and 8.
11:11Okay, well, if he can go get 20 and 8 for another team and that team's pretty good, guess what?
11:18That's Hugh Jack on the Warriors' face.
11:20But if he goes to Atlanta and he's coming off the bench and he's playing about the same amount of
11:25time he's playing, he played for the Warriors, and all things are kind of adding up.
11:31What did you really miss?
11:32Yeah.
11:33But what you really missed in the real end.
11:35Yeah, that was five years ago you missed.
11:37Like, you made a mistake five years ago.
11:39You didn't make a mistake two months ago.
11:42That's the way I look at it.
11:43See, and I'm not mad at that, but I am looking at a bigger picture.
11:48It doesn't matter what he becomes.
11:51And, again, we'll be watching it.
11:52To you it will.
11:53But you blew the pick by him being in another jersey already.
11:57I know this is going to sound.
11:59That's where I'm at.
12:00Like, we got that for fact.
12:02That's data.
12:03Right, but he's never produced for the Warriors.
12:06I mean, it's too soon to say he won't produce at his new location.
12:10No, but if you look at the Atlanta Hawks and their situation, how are they going to pay him?
12:17Like, I know it's outside our pay grade, but, like, they don't – you can't – this is the same
12:24problem the Warriors ran into.
12:27You can't pay a guy $25 million if he's a sub.
12:32Like, that kind of messes things up a little bit.
12:35Don't you think he's a fan favorite?
12:37And you could be like, goo, that doesn't mean a damn thing.
12:40But right now I think fans are happy.
12:42And they're like, brother, take your time.
12:45We're doing it right without you.
12:47We built this before you came.
12:49And I just feel like those three games where he got off to a good start and was on all
12:53the highlight reels,
12:54making the rounds on social media, in a crazy way has bought him some time with the fan base.
13:00But I'm watching that game and I'm like, damn, J.K., I was hoping you gave him 20-24 so
13:07they could –
13:07you know, they've seen the best version of you.
13:10Give them the business and he could.
13:12The one game.
13:14So what – I'm going to ask you some questions, Goo.
13:18I'm right here.
13:18So are we still – when I left, we can talk about when I left and now.
13:27It felt like Kerr was on his way to coming back.
13:32Curry.
13:33No, Steve Kerr.
13:35Oh, okay.
13:36Next year.
13:37I mean, are we still – has anything changed in the last week regarding Steve Kerr
13:43as a coach of the Golden State Warriors looking at, you know, the rest of this year
13:49and down the line next year?
13:50Tell me if I'm wrong.
13:51I don't know.
13:52I'm wondering.
13:54Because the one thing that changed, and I don't know if you and I have talked about it,
13:57was his last appearance on Willard and Diaz.
13:59All right.
14:00And they talked about just – I'm paraphrasing – you know, him just being tired
14:04in a coach's type of way, just answering the questions, you know,
14:09going over the same old, same old.
14:11And, you know, I'm starting to wonder, does he want to come back?
14:16And my thing is, and I stand on it, it would be offensive to me if I were Steve Kerr
14:22to where they said, hey, you know what, we're going to bring you back for one year,
14:25see how this thing goes, and then we'll revisit.
14:29Nah, if I'm the guy that, you know, was architect or helped, you know,
14:34lead this team to four championships, we're at the crossroad like Bone Thugs
14:38and Harmony, old school rap group, Sonny.
14:41The bottom line is I'm going out, give me two, three years, and I'll be up out of here.
14:46But one and done, Calipari, I don't think that would – I think he deserves better than that.
14:52Now, I'm just telling you what I feel, just like Pods.
14:55I think they're going to pay him before they have to, just how I feel.
14:59But, yeah, nothing's happened or has been said that, you know, and I can't speak for everybody,
15:05but for me, that interview has me thinking, is he just tired?
15:09And then this, like Bob Myers, just a great time to get off the train
15:14that pretty much is headed to play-in station.
15:20I mean, it's been a play-in team for a while now.
15:23And that, man.
15:25That's not how they drew it up, right?
15:28No.
15:29No, but they had to allow for this to happen, I would think.
15:35Like, there's no way you put this team together and said, okay, we're assured of making the playoffs.
15:40Well, we got to be careful going to get Jimmy, watching it play out like it did.
15:44You still had to go through that turnstile.
15:47That was only because he wasn't here half the season.
15:50This is a major disappointment to be part of the play-in and cement it in it
15:55because of the Jimmy Butler injury.
15:57And if there's no injury, I'm betting my right arm, then maybe we're higher than eighth.
16:04You know what I mean?
16:04Like, we're not even in the play-in.
16:08You better be, right?
16:10I mean, I don't know.
16:12I don't know.
16:16But hopefully Steph Curry comes back either Wednesday or Friday of this week.
16:21Warriors play Dallas tonight.
16:226.30?
16:23Yeah, the Peacock or NBC game.
16:25All right, 6.30 against Dallas.
16:27We'll get to see Clay Thompson.
16:31Hopefully.
16:32Next question.
16:33Evan and I talked about this.
16:35I'm watching Dallas-Atlanta get a life, but you know why.
16:38And the game's over.
16:41Atlanta's winning.
16:41I'm about 15-16.
16:43About 2-12 left in the game.
16:46You know how they bring the scrubs in, the guys that never play?
16:50Substitute.
16:50Guess who entered the game for both teams?
16:53Somebody entered the game for both teams?
16:55Yeah, at 2-12.
16:56There was a couple subs.
16:57All right.
16:57I'll play.
16:58Who?
16:59Buddy healed for Atlanta.
17:01Okay.
17:02And then Clay for Dallas, and it hurt me.
17:05Oh, boy.
17:06And he had a smile on his face, but I'm like, is this what it's come to?
17:10Yeah.
17:11Wow.
17:11It's what it's come to.
17:13He scored 17.
17:14Made a couple threes.
17:18Guys get old, dude.
17:20Well, how about Draymond?
17:22Yeah, same thing.
17:23Oh, wait.
17:23He's been good?
17:24No.
17:24There's no penalty for him.
17:26You still get to go out there and play as long as you have.
17:30You know what I mean?
17:31Clay's paid the price, but there's a reason why he's come down to earth for licks mortal.
17:36His body failed him.
17:38Goo, what did Pods do in the past week?
17:43What did Pods do?
17:44No, Warrior fans.
17:46What did Pods do in the last week?
17:49And why?
17:51He took his shot against the Knicks that he earned, I thought.
17:53He went too fast.
17:54Shot at three.
17:55They were down one Sunday night.
17:58But other than that, and some people are like, no, that's fine.
18:00Nothing to see here.
18:01Other than that, nothing.
18:03He's just a lightning rod.
18:04You love him or you hate him.
18:06Okay.
18:07I got to tell you this.
18:07Like, tell me you know, like, it is what it is, and you can say it's racial undertones.
18:13It's not guru.
18:15Whatever you want it to be, this dude is a lightning rod.
18:20So I heard him talking about, you know, is he like Jordan Poole?
18:25And I got to tell you, like, I know Poole at the end.
18:30At the end.
18:30Go ahead.
18:32Jordan Poole was not hated.
18:34No, he was not.
18:35I don't think.
18:36Well, he was here.
18:36I'm with you.
18:37He hit that spot and he got ugly.
18:40And then he turned into dress shoes.
18:42Remember, but that was after he got hit.
18:43He called him Stacey Abrams.
18:45Adams.
18:47Stacey Abrams.
18:47Oh, Adams, sorry.
18:48Those are the shoes.
18:50Stacey Adams are really nice shoes.
18:51We got to cut that.
18:52Stacey Abrams was the politician.
18:55That's why I was confused.
18:57He couldn't say that at the cookout to Stacey Abrams.
19:01Oh, boy.
19:02But no.
19:03Come on, man.
19:04I'm with you.
19:04Just, and now I got to, here we go.
19:07Coach, you know I love you.
19:09And Austin and San Jose.
19:11Say what you really want to say because this is what makes me feel like the 143 guy I am.
19:18What's 143?
19:2197.8% of the pod's hate stems from how Kaminga, the fan base, feels he wasn't treated.
19:30That, to me, and he can do nothing about it.
19:34He can do nothing about it.
19:36I'm sitting there watching.
19:37Well, he can play better.
19:38But he had a stretch where he was playing good and we were talking about it.
19:42Here lately, not so much.
19:46Talk to me.
19:47If what I'm hearing about pods is true, go ahead.
19:52Like, he has far surpassed Jordan Poole.
19:55There's not even close to me.
19:57Well, then, you know what?
19:57There's only one guy left.
20:00There's only one guy left in the last 25 years than Mike Dunleavy as a player.
20:07To me, in my 30, 35 years of being around the Warriors, I don't think I ever saw a player
20:14that struggled with the fans.
20:17That's why I don't understand.
20:18Okay, right.
20:19I mean, Mike Dunleavy was the number three pick in the draft.
20:21He was drafted after Jay Williams, after Yao Ming.
20:24Wasn't a great draft, although Paul Pierce went 10.
20:28But, you know, Mike Dunleavy came out of Duke and 6'9", skilled, all that kind of stuff.
20:35Yeah.
20:35And he was a good role player.
20:37He was a good player.
20:38Played 15 years in the league.
20:40But he didn't live up to it.
20:42No.
20:42And so, when, like, if you want to really get honest about it, Brandon Pajemski has lived up to the
20:5019th pick in the draft way more than Mike Dunleavy has.
20:55As he was when he was a third pick in the NBA draft.
20:59Like, I don't understand how.
21:00I took a crack at it.
21:01You tell us what you think it is.
21:03Let's have an honest discussion.
21:05And we have.
21:06About what?
21:06About pods and why the fan base is on them.
21:09It's the white Ohtani.
21:11I mean, that's cute.
21:12And it's like, dude, come on, get over yourself.
21:13But then that goes away.
21:15Do you think?
21:16And he never really said, I want the keys.
21:18He said I wanted to be.
21:19So, he said that.
21:20Let me.
21:21Because they'll come for me if I say he didn't say that.
21:23I didn't like that.
21:25But, man.
21:26People have not moved on.
21:27And I'm asking you.
21:28Do you have a theory like my 97.5 of Kaminga, the way he was treated.
21:35They didn't feel it was equal to pods.
21:37And they felt like pods was the guy bringing the teacher an apple.
21:40Well, I mean, to me, I don't link pods and Kaminga at all.
21:47And help me with a theory.
21:48Because I just don't.
21:51One guy's a forward.
21:52One guy's a guard.
21:54One of the things that's happening with pods is, people are going to hate to hear this,
22:00sucks being the best player on a terrible team.
22:03And if you look at the Golden State Warriors roster right now
22:06and who they're throwing out there night in and night out in the last six, seven games.
22:11Well, he's not better than Melton Pardner.
22:13Who's Melton?
22:14I mean, Melton's a role player.
22:15We're going to find out because they got to pay him.
22:17But that's my point.
22:19Brandon Pajemski, his role is so outsized right now
22:25because the Warriors are so talent depleted.
22:29And whether you like it or not, he's got to try to do way more than he can.
22:34Then he makes more mistakes.
22:36Play in that way.
22:37We'll get into some of the things that Steve Kerr said.
22:40But, you know, I get why people are a little disappointed in pods.
22:48But I think they're missing the big picture that he's a role player
22:55who's got to try to be the number two on this team.
22:58And he can't do it right now.
23:00And I don't know if he can.
23:01I think there's more to it than that.
23:03Like deeper.
23:05Okay.
23:05Well, we can get into that on the other side.
