Steve Kerr sat down to address Brandin Podziemski's recent "hiccups" on the court. Steiny and Guru listen to the soundbite and debate whether Kerr is being too protective or if Podz is simply a victim of a talent-depleted roster. Steiny shares a personal story from his college days to explain why Podz's efficiency is tanking without Steph Curry on the floor.

00:00I highly recommend it.
00:01You're in a good mood.
00:02Yeah.
00:02And you got a little tan.
00:04Yeah.
00:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:08Hey, yeah, so I left on Friday, a week ago, or whatever.
00:14You missed a New York game where Pods was balling.
00:16Yep.
00:17And took the shot trying to be the hero.
00:19So he took a bad shot?
00:19No, yeah, he took a bad, it was a bad shot to me.
00:22Well, it didn't go in, right?
00:23But a lot of people were like, who'd you want to pass it to?
00:26And I was like, okay, we doing that.
00:28But the bigger, people are not ready for this discussion.
00:32And I consider you family.
00:35Yeah, I'm ready for anything.
00:36I'm not Mr.
00:36You know, I'm Malcolm X when I need to be, but this is kind of reverse.
00:40Do you think race has anything to do in a predominantly sport played by, what,
00:4675, 85% black players that Pods' look and just his ultra confidence,
00:51which has enabled him to get where he's at, rub some people the wrong way,
00:56and he can do no right?
01:00I think, in my mind, is it 90% that?
01:03Daryl, no.
01:04But 4% might be 8% to some, 16% to others.
01:09Make it make sense, I'm asking.
01:11Well, most white guys are pretty lousy, if you think about it.
01:15Well, Chris Mullen.
01:16Yeah, but that was 25 years.
01:18Yeah, that's right.
01:18Yeah, well, he's not going to be Bird and he's not going to be Mullen.
01:20And Donnelly V didn't live up to his draft, you know, where he was drafted at.
01:25Had a great career.
01:28But I'm just trying to, like, I don't know.
01:31Like, he hasn't said anything to White Ohtani, but I guess he doesn't need to say anything else.
01:38People act like that.
01:39That's just played on.
01:40They just play it back to back.
01:41All right, well, you wanted me to play this Kerr sound on Pajemski about how Pajemski's played, particularly without Steph
01:51Curry.
01:51And you said this is very interesting.
01:54I heard it once, but I'm really going to listen now.
01:56So let's listen to Steve Kerr on Podsy.
01:59This is a great experience for Brandon.
02:01I mean, 20 games without Steph.
02:02I think where he is in his career, proven he can help drive winning.
02:06I think that's been apparent during his, is this his third year?
02:10He's been apparent, you know, he does a lot of things that can help drive winning.
02:14He is, in my mind, really exploring how good he can become and what type of player he wants to
02:21become.
02:21And I think you've seen lots of hiccups along the way where he's trying things that aren't working,
02:27but playing without Steph for 20 games is going to expose some of that.
02:31So in my mind right now where he is, is if he's playing off Steph, off of the ball,
02:36if he's playing a more of a secondary ball handler role, he's really good.
02:41He does a lot of things that other players don't do.
02:44He's got a knack.
02:45When he tries to be too on ball, you see him get into some trouble.
02:48You see the warts, and this is all part of being a young player.
02:52And I think for him, he has to sort through all of that and the idea of what it means
02:57to be on a team
02:58and explore this stuff, explore your own game while also trying to help the team win.
03:02And that's a complex thing.
03:04And so this is a very interesting time for him.
03:07For sure.
03:07Can I interject?
03:09Can I say something off the bat?
03:11There are a lot of people, and I guess I'm one of them.
03:14There was a line in regard to Jonathan Camiga stood out to me.
03:18He never was afforded the luxury of trying to figure out what player he wanted to be.
03:24He was fit in.
03:26They put him, you go do this.
03:28It never felt like he was able to spread his wings or freelance to have what I call a luxury.
03:34You tell me if you think I'm wrong, to find out while he's playing what type of player he wanted
03:41to be.
03:42Camiga was like, you're in a straight jacket, fit this, and go make it work.
03:46We don't want to hear nothing.
03:48I mean, I don't hate the thought.
03:52Okay.
03:53But Pods wouldn't be doing this if they had Butler, Porzingis, and Steph Curry healthy.
03:59Because if he would do this, then he would pay the price.
04:02But right now, I don't care how much people dislike Pods.
04:09If you run down the list of the 10 players who played on Saturday night,
04:12he is one of the best three players on their team right now.
04:16Now, if you say, well, that's the problem, I'm not going to disagree with you.
04:19But I do completely agree with Steve Kerr.
04:24He's trying to do too much right now.
04:26How come?
04:27Because he feels like he has to.
04:29All right.
04:29Well, you ain't that good to try to take matters into your own hands.
04:33We all know that.
04:34But he's got to figure it out.
04:36It's like...
04:41All right.
04:41You ready?
04:42My junior year in college, we stunk.
04:44Okay.
04:44Average 16 a game.
04:46All right.
04:47We stunk.
04:48Probably, you know, but average 16 a game.
04:51Next year, we were way better.
04:53Average 12.
04:54I was better senior year than junior year.
04:57Like that...
04:58But four points is...
04:59Okay.
05:00No, but what I'm saying is, is like, I was inefficient.
05:04Like, Pods is going to be...
05:06When he's not playing with Curry and...
05:08He's going to be less efficient.
05:10See, and that's...
05:11But every player is who has to slide up the peck.
05:14Draymond Green, headed to the Hall of Fame.
05:16But my thing is, he's paid.
05:18He's got his contract day-day.
05:21This is me looking at the Warrior bingo card.
05:24I thought they were just...
05:26I'm going Beyonce.
05:28Drunken in love with Pods.
05:30He could do no wrong.
05:31But when I hear Steve Kerr break it down that way and talk about or compare and contrast what I
05:38am or what Pods is with or without Curry,
05:41then I start to scratch my head, like, maybe I jumped the gun in regard to they're going to do
05:48everything possible to bring him back.
05:51Like, maybe there is a threshold or a number that they might feel like, you know what?
05:55And I could be totally wrong, but when I hear that, that jumps out like, who, you might have it
06:01wrong.
06:02There might be a certain plateau they want to go in regard to trying to keep him when that day
06:07does come.
06:08But it's not drunken in love after hearing the coach say what I am with Stiney and what I'm not
06:15without him.
06:16And for people...
06:17I guess...
06:18Here's the other thing.
06:19On this particular...
06:21Like, the last four games, I'm looking at Pods' minutes.
06:24He hasn't played more than 30 minutes in a night in the last four.
06:27He's 24-30, 28-28.
06:30So, it's like he's not getting his 36-37 minutes.
06:33And he's been up and down, up and down.
06:35Right.
06:35Shots just inconsistent.
06:38But that's what, like...
06:40I hear you.
06:40He can...
06:41As bad as he can play, he's still going to play 25 minutes on this particular team because they're not
06:46very good.
06:47Yeah.
06:48And so, I would argue that, okay, I'm looking at Saturday.
06:51He didn't play well.
06:52He only played 24 minutes.
06:53It's like, I mean, that's like if everybody was healthy, Pods played like 15 or 18 minutes.
07:00He's got to play on this team because they don't have enough other players.
07:04Losing is not fun.
07:05And I know you've been gone.
07:07But I'm not used to it.
07:08And, again, I came in and told you before you left what life would be like without the chef.
07:14And I've got enough of a reminder of what or a sample size of what it looks like.
07:21I mean, I'm just not used to this.
07:23And we play hard.
07:24And that takes you to the second quarter.
07:26Maybe the third, the middle.
07:29And, you know, you just come down to earth.
07:31That game in Atlanta at halftime, again, had me thinking, okay, we got a chance.
07:36And then it's about talent.
07:37Yeah.
07:38They can't...
07:39A lot of their games are the same.
07:41They're okay for a half or so.
07:43Yeah.
07:43Yeah.
07:44But that's when talent takes over.
07:47Yes, E.
07:47This is from Anthony Slater of ESPN just a moment ago.
07:51Steph Curry was not cleared for the scrimmage in Atlanta on Sunday that Kerr had referenced prior to the Hawks
07:59game.
08:00Just did more court slash rehab work with Rick Celebrini.
08:04Warriors are saying there's no setback.
08:06He just wasn't yet ready to advance to the next stage.
08:09So that's the latest on Steph Curry.
08:11All right.
08:12You worried?
08:13Evan is who he is.
08:14How much did you worry last week?
08:15And we had fun without you.
08:17Not much.
08:17Evan was there for me in a different way that you can't.
08:20And we know how you are.
08:22That was cryptic to me.
08:24He wasn't clear.
08:25This was after I'm thinking, okay, now talking to you and Evan, he might be back.
08:30Now, again, I don't want to jump the gun, but the possibility that the chef may not get back in
08:36the kitchen is still out there.
08:38Talk to me when he's ready to play.
08:41This was supposed to be.
08:42I thought Evan was giving us good news.
08:47That wasn't good news to you, was it?
08:48He'll play Friday.
08:51I mean, I got news for you.
08:53It doesn't matter if he plays Friday or who do they play after that or that game.
08:59What do you mean it don't matter?
09:00It doesn't matter.
09:01No, we need the continuity to get back and guys get back to their role.
09:05They got 10 games.
09:06They get five games.
09:07Miss another.
09:08How many games are left in the season?
09:09Like 10?
09:10Something like that?
09:11I should know.
09:13The other thing about Curry is maybe he only needs one or two games at the end of the year.
09:17Yeah.
09:18You know, at 38, you keep studying.
09:21I hear you talking, but you and I both know the body, the 11.
09:25They play 71.
09:27Okay.
09:2733 and 38.
09:30Yeah.
09:30About what I thought.
09:31Who would have thought?
09:31Yeah.
09:32I might owe you two things.
09:33What was the other one?
09:35No, just because the bet didn't come close to the 50.
09:38Well, it looks like the Lakers could get up to two.
09:40They might win it all.
09:42Stop.
09:44They haven't kind of said the same thing.
09:46They're...
09:46Well, don't say stop.
09:49You got LeBron, Luka, who could be an MVP in AR-15.
09:53Speaking of two white guys balling, Luka and AR-15.
09:57Yeah.
09:59No, they're good.
10:00And let me tell you, as good as the Lakers have been, they have not been more impressive
10:07than the Washington Wizards.
10:09They are putting on a master class right now.
10:12But what if it doesn't?
10:13What if you don't?
10:13What if you get six?
10:15That would...
10:15There are only some things you can't, you know, you can only control what you can control.
10:19And they're going to be one of the worst three teams in the league.
10:21And they're going to dare Adam Silver to screw him over two years in a row.
10:25Well, speaking of him, what...
10:27How about your boy DeBonsa?
10:28He can't get him into the second round or third...
10:31Sweet 16?
10:32Oh, is he Jesus?
10:33He had 35 and 12.
10:35Exactly.
10:36Exactly.
10:37And when Pogs does that, oh, he tries to do too much.
10:40Stiney, stop.
10:41By the way, can we change your boy's team's name?
10:44My boy's team's name?
10:45They cannot be the Wizards anymore.
10:48Why?
10:48Wow, wow.
10:49The Lizards.
10:51I'm with you.
10:5216...
10:52Oh, I got you.
10:53You went from a W to an L.
10:5416 in a row?
10:56How do you lose 16 straight games?
10:58And the Pacers were up to 14 if they hadn't won since then.
11:02I don't even know.
11:03They're keeping pace.
11:03Well, that's a four.
11:05Listen, I asked you two, did you watch Minnesota?
11:08It was on NBC Boston last night.
11:11No.
11:11One of the announcers said, oh, Silver's got this new plan to this lottery where teams are
11:17going to be shook.
11:19So they didn't divulge it, but I'm thinking Adam is in the lab like, this might be the last
11:25one where tanking you get rewarded for.
11:27Yeah.
11:28I'm sure.
11:28That was sad on the telecast.
11:30I think it was strong.
11:32Yeah.
11:32The NBA's motto, we'll make things worse.
11:35That's how they address problems.
11:36They make them worse.
11:37You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports Station.
11:43Always live on the free Odyssey app.
11:44Now broadcasting from the Laughing Monk Studios.
11:47Let's go to Marv.
11:48Marv's in Livermore.
11:49Let's talk about the Warriors.
11:51He ain't coming for one of us, huh?
11:52Marv brings it.
11:54I ain't coming for both.
11:56I didn't say I wasn't even here last week.
11:59I know.
12:00I'm glad you're back.
12:01I know you had a good time, but your guys' talk today made me wish I was in Puerto Rico.
12:06I'm sorry.
12:07Oh, man.
12:08But, Drew, this is where you're wrong.
12:13You said it earlier, and you kind of walked it back.
12:15But you're saying people of color who call in and complain or criticize pods is racist.
12:23No, no, never, never, never, never.
12:26Real quick.
12:26You walked it down.
12:28No, Marv.
12:28Marv, just real quick, because that's a strong word.
12:31I said a lot of people, color, no color, look at the double standard of how Pazemski is treated compared
12:39to Kaminga, and it did pods no favors.
12:41I'm not saying every black person looks at pods and is racist because they don't like them.
12:47I get why they don't like them.
12:49But go ahead, Marv.
12:52It's not that I don't like pods.
12:53I put it in perspective in basketball terms.
12:56So I'll name some of the comments that you made last week, and I'm like, I've got to wait for
13:01Steiner because I know Steiner's going to say something.
13:03Oh, boy.
13:04What did you say, Drew?
13:04I'm going to say this.
13:05Go ahead, Marv.
13:05I'm writing it down.
13:07Well, but Dibs put you in your place and won when you guys did a crossover, and you said, oh,
13:12man, Pods is balling.
13:13He scored 25 against New York.
13:15And Dibs said, hey, but they lost.
13:18You can't have it both ways.
13:19You can't be a winning player like you want to say pods, and you lost because he compared it and
13:24contrasted to when J.K. went off in the playoffs, and you didn't have anything to say to him.
13:29Yeah, there's nothing.
13:30That's not Marv.
13:31Real quick.
13:31That's not fair.
13:33And who the hell is Dibs?
13:34He ain't played a minute in the NBA.
13:36Hey, I'm tired of dudes, older dudes, younger dudes, frowning on a guy that can get 25 in an NBA
13:42game, Marv.
13:43I don't care what his name is and the complexion of his skin.
13:47That's hater rate.
13:49Pods had 25.
13:50He was having a night at the garden.
13:52Put respect on it.
13:54But J.K. did that in the playoffs and didn't get respect.
13:57He got it for me, Marv.
13:59He got it for me.
14:00Okay.
14:01I'll give you that.
14:02And then, but you know you were reaching when you said, hey, Monte texted me and said he was a
14:0719th pick.
14:08He's $4 million.
14:09He overplayed his contract.
14:11Well, he should.
14:11That's what people get signed for.
14:13You get paid.
14:14Your rookie contract.
14:16Right.
14:16It's slotted.
14:17So you don't get a participation trophy for doing that.
14:21And I'll give you two names.
14:22Green, Draymines was drafted second round.
14:26And A.R., who you just mentioned, went undrafted.
14:28I got you.
14:28So don't tell me Pods is so great because he's a 19th pick.
14:32Marv.
14:32Okay.
14:33Numbers are numbers.
14:34Yeah.
14:34Numbers are numbers, right?
14:37So, and I called you guys last year.
14:39I asked you, do you think Pods would be better than A.R.?
14:43Never.
14:45And you used the adjective I didn't say.
14:48I've never said, Marv, to you or anybody, Pods is great, man.
14:53I just give a guy credit when they deserve it.
14:57And just like Stiney said, Pods is the best on this team because they're devoid of talent.
15:02But, Marv, you call real quick, and I love you with energy.
15:05Like, I'm telling you, Pods is an all-star, and I'm nowhere near that, man.
15:11But I can recognize when a dude's busting his ass.
15:14Finish up, Marv.
15:15Yes, and I agree.
15:16And that's what I say.
15:19Pods, the Warriors would be great if Pods is your fourth best player, fourth or fifth.
15:24Yeah.
15:24The Warriors cannot be good if he's the third best player.
15:26I have no problem with that.
15:27And then Stiney said, where's all this hate coming from?
15:30So it's not hate.
15:31It's because, Guru, I'm going to use one of your submissions.
15:33All right.
15:34Don't spit on us and tell me it's raining.
15:37All right.
15:37I love you, Marv.
15:40Appreciate it, Marv.
15:41You said that, too.
15:43But I just, you know I'm never saying my man is great like that.
15:47And Coach called in and told me I was the starter of the Pods is great.
15:52I'm paraphrasing for Coach Campaign.
15:54And that just hurts.
15:55The problem is that you can't talk about Pods because everybody thinks you either think he's a great player or
16:02you think he stinks.
16:03It's Drake or Kindred.
16:04Yeah.
16:04And he's neither.
16:06Yeah.
16:06He doesn't stink and he's not great.
16:08There he is.
16:08And this is his, what, third year in the NBA?
16:11Because Steve didn't know.
16:12So I get third and fourth year all mixed up.
16:15But, again, I mean, here's the other thing.
16:18And until it's proven otherwise, the reality of the situation is we've spent hours upon hours, days upon days, weeks
16:29upon weeks, months upon months, talking about Kaminga and Pods.
16:32And they're two role players.
16:34That's it.
16:35But you're missing a rat on the table.
16:37And Pods, because they're shorthanded now, needs to be better than a role player.
16:42He's incapable of it.
16:43And we're talking about two sixth or seventh men on a team.
16:48But it's just simple until proven otherwise.
16:52Can I separate the two?
16:53Pods was not a seventh pick in the NBA lottery.
16:57Kaminga was.
16:58Dub Nation is enjoying the Steph Curry show every night.
17:04But we're waiting on the next.
17:05We thought James Wiseman was going to be the next.
17:08We thought Jonathan Kaminga with the seventh pick was going to be the next.
17:12So that's all we've been clamoring for.
17:14So there's hope.
17:15And that's why you get these calls, these texts.
17:18And now it's turned in what it's turned into.
17:21And now he's no longer here.
17:22And there's pain.
17:24Because I thought J.K. was going to be not the next Curry.
17:28I've got to tell you.
17:28But just the next face of the young iteration of the Golden State Warriors.
17:33And right now we've got a band of guys that are like, you know what?
17:36We can replace you.
17:38Exactly.
17:39If we had to.
17:39Where does that leave us?
17:41It's 33 and 38.
17:42Yeah.
17:43But like with Kaminga.
17:44Like this is all I'm saying is with Kaminga or without Kaminga.
17:46You're the same team.
17:48And I'm sorry.
17:49Right, but we had to find that out the hard way.
17:51I'm also sorry.
17:52But like I actually think.
17:54And I'd love to get Warrior fans perspective.
17:56I actually think you do focus on Kaminga.
18:00Myself.
18:01Yeah, because like.
18:03I expect more.
18:04He's gone.
18:05Right?
18:05He's gone.
18:06Yeah.
18:06And you're in one of two camps.
18:09One is, boy, this guy could be really good.
18:12They may have made a big mistake.
18:13And the other is, he's just not that good.
18:18He has trouble staying on the court consistently.
18:21And I mean.
18:23Chris A. from Oakland says I need to put both of them in the same box.
18:27But that's not fair to Pod.
18:29It's fair to both of them.
18:30Who are they?
18:31Who the hell are either of them?
18:32Well, one was the seventh pick in the lotto.
18:34What does that matter now?
18:35It's five years into his career.
18:36Who cares?
18:38Like you are who you are.
18:39No, it's a part of the story of why we're where we're at.
18:42But we're devoid of young talent.
18:45Okay, so if Kaminga was a bigger miss, Pods is what he is.
18:49And that's why I think Marvel's alluding to.
18:51I think he's paid above what you're making.
18:53What's it, $4 million?
18:54He's giving you more than that, Pods.
18:56But he's on his rookie deal.
18:57So that's what you expect.
18:59Those are facts.
19:00But, like, they're average players.
19:06I'm not fighting you on it.
19:07Okay, so, and that's what I come back to.
19:11I don't think Warrior fans down the line are going to be like,
19:15we made a big mistake with Kaminga.
19:17You could be right.
19:18I think it's headed toward that right now.
19:20I just wish he was on our team.
19:22Why?
19:23And we found that out.
19:24But we did find it out.
19:25That's why they traded him.
19:26No, no, no, they traded him because he didn't fit and he didn't like how he was being treated.
19:31Do you think if the Warriors really thought he could be a star, they would have traded him?
19:36Because I don't.
19:37No, there's part of me that's mad that it took this damn long.
19:39You held on to him for five and you knew that he wasn't going to fit or not manifest into
19:44what you thought when you drafted him?
19:46What took so long?
19:47And then two, I'm still thinking he's got game.
19:50I still think Kaminga can be a serviceable player on a starting five in the NBA.
19:55Have I lowered?
19:56But, Gu, he can never be a serviceable player as a starter.
20:03Like, he's got to be a scorer as a starter because.
20:07But that could be serviceable.
20:08No, but, like, if you have Jalen, if you have two guys who are averaging 20 plus, like, why does
20:15Kaminga doesn't fit on a team unless they need his scoring?
20:19Well.
20:20At least at this point.
20:22Hey, tomato, tomato, I just feel like the dude can still play right now.
20:28Does it, you know, if I would have said this, we would have had the same conversation after those first
20:33three games.
20:34And I thought it was funny everybody was making a big deal, but I'm serious.
20:38That Minnesota series, maybe it's just him finding the right situation, and Atlanta might not.
20:43But at 24 years old, and I'm taking this from you because you taught me this, there's no way in
20:48hell I feel comfortable in saying yay or nay in regard to a 24-year-old's career right now.
20:56You know, and I mean, honestly, what took so long?
21:00They were, what if I said they were being overly patient with him?
21:03Like, they, the Warriors tried year after year after year with Kaminga, and it just never worked.
21:12And I'm not putting blame on any side.
21:16And now he's with the Atlanta Hawks, and he's the seventh man for the Hawks.
21:20For now.
21:21Yeah.
21:22But he was the seventh man for the Warriors, essentially.
21:27So until, until he, like, until he makes himself so valuable that he's playing 30 minutes a night, night in
21:34and night out, then he's just a role player like Pods.
21:38But Pods, individually, is in a better situation because the Hawks have better players right now than the Warriors, and
21:48Kaminga's having trouble getting onto the floor.
21:50But I'll tell you what, if things hadn't have gone south with Kaminga, and he'd be healthy right now, although
21:56he's not healthy right now.
21:57Like I was going to say, you know, if Kaminga were healthy right now, he'd be playing a hell of
22:01a lot for the Warriors.
22:02He's not healthy.
22:03So, I mean, imagine that.
22:05Let's say they didn't trade Kaminga, and he's played seven games over the last six weeks for them with the
22:11Warriors in their current state.
22:13We'd be very frustrated with him at this point.
22:17All right, 888-957-9570.
