00:00D'Anthony Melton joins us here on Willard and Dibs on 95.7 The Game on the River Islands guest
00:06line.
00:07Hey, D'Anthony, welcome to the show. Thanks for doing it. And hey, nice dunk last night.
00:13Man, most definitely. Thank you. Thank you. I'm happy to be here.
00:16Is it weird if I tell you, dude, I didn't know you had that in you?
00:21Nah, I like it. I like it that way sometimes. You know what I mean?
00:24I like to catch people off guard. So, you know, you never know what to expect.
00:27I mean, throw in the experience you've had over the last couple of seasons with the Warriors and then that
00:35kind of athleticism.
00:37Like, where are you in your recovery and, you know, especially leading to a moment like that?
00:45I mean, at this point in my recovery, I mean, I felt pretty, you know, I felt pretty healthy, obviously,
00:50with regards to my knee.
00:51But, you know, season always comes with some bumps, bruises and all that type of stuff.
00:57But ultimately, I mean, I'm doing, you know, and they're doing such a great job of just taking care of
01:01my body and just making sure I'm healthy and strong in the play.
01:04So, I mean, it's been a long, you could say, two years, you know what I mean, with them.
01:08So, it's been a little different. But, I mean, man, it's just been grinding.
01:13It's been grinding. It's about working and just staying level. That's all I've been trying to do.
01:17And you had to be patient to, you know, sit out the first couple of months of the year.
01:20And then even when you got back, it's kind of, you know, stops and starts and the rest of it.
01:25Are you at the spot now, though, where you're not even thinking about the knee anymore?
01:29Is all the doubt gone?
01:31Oh, yeah. No, most definitely.
01:34Yeah. I mean, I stopped thinking about it, you know what I mean?
01:36Like, I would probably say at least two to three weeks ago, you know what I mean?
01:40And maybe even a little more, more a month and a half.
01:43Because I can't really, like, you know what I mean?
01:46I don't want that to hinder, you know, my performance.
01:48So, I just try to just make sure we're talking with, you know, the other doctors and medical staff
01:53and just stay confident.
01:55Like, my knee is healthy and my knee is good.
01:57I'm still going to feel some things.
01:59But, like, you know, ultimately it's healthy.
02:00And we've done a great job just recovering and getting back to where I need to be.
02:04D'Anthony Melton here on Willard & Dibs on 95.7 The Game.
02:07And it looks like minutes are going up.
02:09And without Steph, your usage is clearly also going up.
02:12This has got to be some of the most fun basketball you've played in a number of years.
02:17Oh, yeah. For sure.
02:18I mean, I didn't even expect, like, I mean, this year it's almost been, like, three different roles,
02:23four different roles I didn't have to, you know what I mean, get accompanied with.
02:26So, I mean, it's fun.
02:28It's fun just to figure out, you know, what the next game holds.
02:31Because, I mean, from the start of the season to now, you know, teams are going to be different.
02:35You know, see how the primary defender, you know, feels on you and just how different coverages.
02:41And at the same time, you still got a fair way to be successful for yourself and also for the
02:45team.
02:45Just, you know, just to make sure you put yourself in the best positions, you know, to try to win
02:49the game, honestly.
02:50Yeah, D'Anthony, I wonder what the mental side of that is.
02:54Kind of not just your health, but how do you see your role as changing when Jimmy Butler and then
02:59Steph Curry go down?
03:02Man, I mean, just my mindset, even from the jump, was just, like, be aggressive, you know what I mean,
03:08be yourself.
03:08But then, you know, with those guys going down, it's just like, okay, now you can't just, sometimes you can't
03:13just be aggressive for yourself.
03:14You got to be aggressive for your team.
03:15Like, you know what I mean?
03:16And just talking with those guys and everything, that has definitely helped me.
03:22Because sometimes, you know, it gets a little mentally fatiguing, just, you know, day in and day out having to
03:27go through stuff.
03:28But ultimately, I mean, it's so much fun.
03:30You know what I mean?
03:31It's so much fun just to play ball, just to be able to suit them up with my guys.
03:34That's all I really care about.
03:36Didn't know you had that level of a postgame and they put the little six-footer on you, Sharif Cooper,
03:41last night.
03:41I mean, when you see that, and you're only 6'2 or 6'3, but do you start licking your
03:46chops a little bit when there's actually a smaller defender on you so you can get down there in that
03:50mid-block area?
03:52Oh, most definitely.
03:53I mean, you know, they locked me in the weight room a decent amount of time.
03:56So, I had to work on my strength.
03:59So, you know, I get to use it sometimes when they put littler dudes on me and stuff.
04:04Anthony, I want to ask you about your three-point shot.
04:08My partner here earlier today said something that we all know to be true, which is, like, when I look
04:15at your percentages, we know you're a better three-point shooter than that.
04:20What's going on?
04:21Yeah, what's going on this year?
04:23What can you tell us?
04:25Honestly, I don't even know.
04:28I think it's partly just the time lapse that I took and, you know, having to shoot with, like, no
04:38one's around, you know what I mean, and quiet gym and just I'm kind of shooting when I got time
04:43and stuff like that.
04:44Now it's like, you know what I mean, you got to get that shot up.
04:47You got to get that shot up, you know what I mean?
04:50So, just bringing that stuff out.
04:52And, I mean, like you said, I know this is not how I shoot, and I know it's not me.
04:57So, I'd just be saying to myself, I'm going to turn that corner, and that's what I'm trying to do.
05:02Are you the type of shooter who will look at the film to see if there's anything mechanical you're doing
05:06different?
05:07Or just, let me get back in the gym and just feel it and lock in on the form a
05:11little bit.
05:13I mean, you got to low-key do both.
05:16Like, you know what I mean?
05:16You got to look at your form.
05:19You got to look at your base, and you got to watch film and see what's going on.
05:23You know, sometimes talk to people in this school, you know, they've seen you shoot so much from a distance.
05:28Like, you know, what does it look like compared to how does it feel to you?
05:33DeAnthony Melton is joining us here on Willard & Dibbs 95.7 The Game, live from the road.
05:39They're in Boston getting ready for tomorrow night.
05:41Hey, this was interesting.
05:43Kristaps Porzingis, after the game, kind of paid you a nice compliment and said that you were always looking for
05:49him,
05:49and you made it very easy for him.
05:52What has your experience been like playing with Kristaps, and how has that relationship built?
06:01I mean, KP, he's such a, you know, KP's such a massive nightmare, and I mean, I say this every
06:07time,
06:07but, like, he really is, and, like, just being able to, like, connect with him and talk with him, you
06:12know what I mean,
06:13throughout the days that we've been together, even when we're, you know, when we're both not playing,
06:16you know, on the bench talking to each other.
06:17So, trying to figure out his game and getting him going, it's like, it's just going to be so much
06:23better for,
06:24not only for myself, but just for the team, just because the attention that is, you know, focused on him,
06:31you know, is similar to what we had to figure out with Jimmy and stuff like that, you know,
06:36just the way they get to the post, and you've got to kind of bring a double team.
06:40So, when I know he's effective, and I know when he's aggressive, and being himself,
06:44especially coming to a new team, it's tough sometimes, you know, it's going to put us in a better position,
06:50because, you know, this is what he does, and he gets paid to do it, and, you know, he's very
06:55good at what he does.
06:56So, I was going to be trying to keep him rolling, honestly.
07:00Have you had to take a bigger leadership role of late?
07:03Like, Al wasn't with the team, and Draymond, of course, is always there and a great leader,
07:07but no Steph, and no Jimmy, and you look around, and you're one of the more veteran guys.
07:11Have you had to step into that role as well?
07:15For sure. For sure.
07:17Just like you said, I got to look around, and I'm just like, okay, this might be the time I
07:21got to say something.
07:22Like, you know what I mean?
07:23I'm one of the guys that's a little older than the most right at this point, which is crazy to
07:28even say,
07:28but, you know, I just try to use my basketball knowledge and just express how I feel about the game
07:35and what's going on out there, and just, you know, I feel like I got a very good basketball mind
07:40and very high IQ, so I just try to, you know, relay that to the rest of the team
07:45and just, you know, see what's going on.
07:46Yeah, D'Antony, are you all, like, meeting people, like, 10 minutes before you play with them
07:52in some of these cases?
07:53Like, I'm going to be honest with you.
07:55You got ready for that game in New York the other night, and I'm like, you're seven.
08:00I don't know who that is.
08:01You know, and we watch every minute of every game.
08:05What is this?
08:06Like, when are you seeing these people, and how are those relationships, both on and off the court, coming together?
08:13I mean, this year has been, it's been, you know, it's been a little different, so, but just like, kind
08:20of like you said,
08:21just this conversation with people, like, you know, me and him have already connected on watching, you know what I
08:28mean?
08:28We watched, he watched The Sopranos, and, like, that's what I'm watching right now, so, like, we've connected on that,
08:34just talking about that, you know, and just picking through his brains.
08:37Like, I'm a type, like, I don't really care, like, I can talk to anybody, you know what I mean?
08:42I like to pick people's brain, I like to see what they think, and see how, you know, how they
08:46like to be effective,
08:47because, at the end of the day, that's the most important thing for this team, is how can everybody be
08:51effective?
08:52So, I mean, I love just hooping, you know what I mean?
08:56And if you want to be effective, you want to be efficient for us, then I'm with whatever.
09:00So, what's Tony Soprano up to right now?
09:03Where are you in the arc?
09:04That's a good question.
09:05Right?
09:06That's a great question.
09:07That is a great question.
09:09Right now, I just finished season three, so I literally just finished the season finale.
09:15Tony, he...
09:17Spoiler alert!
09:18Hold on, spoiler alert!
09:19Spoiler alert for anybody who hasn't seen it!
09:23I don't know how much I should really say, but, like, yeah, Tony, he's still going to therapy,
09:29he's still figuring out, you know, he's filling out his family dynamic, I would say, right now.
09:34He's going through stuff with his son, he's going through stuff with his daughter, you know,
09:39they're kind of seeing his lifestyle more so now, and they're kind of, they're seeing the real him,
09:45and they got questions about that stuff, so that's where Tony's at.
09:49So, wait, wait, is this your first time through, D'Anthony,
09:52or do you know how this ends?
09:55No, that's my first time through, that's what I'm saying, that's what I'm like,
09:58I was telling, I was like, I'm hooked, but, like, I don't want to, I don't want to binge through
10:07it,
10:07because then I'm not going to have nothing to watch, and I'm going to be mad that I finished it
10:10so early,
10:10like, it's the same thing I did with Game of Thrones, you know what I mean?
10:14Yeah.
10:14I'm trying to take it real slow right now with this.
10:17No, you have to, I just got into the second iteration, House of the Dragon,
10:22and I'm doing the same thing, it's like, I want to watch four in a row, but I want it
10:25the last two.
10:27Exactly, exactly, so I might finish, I might wait to the end of the season to, like,
10:33really sit down and probably watch the last two seasons, but, yeah, it's one of the best ones, I see
10:40why.
10:41It's a good strategy, it's really, really well thought out.
10:44All right, you're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ, FM, NHC1 San Francisco, and Odyssey Sports Station,
10:50and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey app,
10:54and coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios, it's Willard and Dibbs,
10:57and we're talking to DeAnthony Melton of the Warriors, just a real nice game for him last night
11:03as the Warriors snap their skid.
11:05Okay, D'Anthony, I know there's only so far that you can go with this question,
11:09because, yes, there are variables and the unknown,
11:13but what is your thought on you and the future and the Warriors?
11:19Fans want to know.
11:21Yeah, I mean, the future is only what the future can hold, you know what I mean?
11:26I just try to take it day by day at this point,
11:30because you never know what can happen,
11:31and you never know what, you know, tomorrow holds,
11:35and especially given my career and what's happened,
11:39I just try to wake up the next day and just see what's going on
11:41and see how my life is, you know, feeling and moving around.
11:45Okay, amen to that, but how would you answer, like, your comfort here?
11:50Do you like it here? Could you see yourself here?
11:53I mean, of course, like, of course.
11:55I mean, I feel like I've expressed countless times how much I love, you know,
12:00going to stay in the medical staff to the actual staff to the front office to,
12:04you know, the players that's been here to the players that's here.
12:07So I think, you know, that expression of love is definitely out there.
12:11But at the end of the day, I just take it day by day, see how it goes.
12:16And you have to have a deep understanding of the business
12:19because you get hurt last year, and then you're traded,
12:23and, you know, you get traded while you're hurt,
12:25and then you get better, and then you come back.
12:27What was that process like for you mentally and emotionally?
12:33It was a lot, you know what I mean?
12:35It was definitely a lot, especially given an injury to, you know, your knee.
12:40It just puts this fear into your heart, honestly,
12:45that, like, sometimes you don't know.
12:47So it just, you know, it definitely scared me.
12:50But at the same time, I mean,
12:52they was pretty transparent about what was happening,
12:54and they was pretty upfront about stuff.
12:56And at the same time, like I said, I mean, I kind of,
12:58I had a feeling because after I got hurt, you know,
13:02we took a pretty big skid of losses.
13:06So I had a feeling a move was needed to be made.
13:09And, I mean, I'm not playing no more this year,
13:11so, like, I'm not too, you know, worked up on getting traded
13:16and everything like that.
13:17As long as I got to be in a great rehab spot
13:20and got to focus on myself and my knee, that's all I care about.
13:24D'Anthony, we want to do the big finish with you
13:26and get to know you a little bit better on the way out the door,
13:29but I have to ask this.
13:30Did you catch Steph's eye?
13:32Did you see him after the dunk last night the same way the cameras saw him?
13:36For sure.
13:37For sure.
13:38Okay, so, like, you look over there, and what do you see?
13:42I mean, I see, I see confusion.
13:46Like, you know what I mean?
13:50Sometimes I'm telling you, I just be catching people off guard,
13:53and I know they just be, they be shocked, and I love it.
13:56I love it.
13:57So if you were going to caption Steph's face, what would it be?
14:03Um, what's that one saying?
14:05It's like, I ain't never, ever, ever see you act like this before.
14:10That's one of those.
14:12That's, uh, yeah.
14:13I didn't know that you could do that.
14:15Um, okay.
14:16All right, so, big finish.
14:18Um, we got two categories.
14:20You, you pick one, and, uh, and then we'll ask you.
14:25And we'll ask you a couple questions from that category.
14:27So, uh, the, uh, the two categories are Mr. Do Something or The Melt.
14:35Hmm.
14:37Hmm.
14:39Hmm.
14:40You said, you said two categories, like, I gotta pick one?
14:42You gotta pick one of those categories, and then we'll ask you some questions from that category.
14:47Okay, let's do, let's do The Melt.
14:48Okay, The Melt.
14:50There it is.
14:50Um, all right, what's the best use, in your opinion, of melted cheese?
14:55Is it on a hot sandwich, a pizza, or nachos?
15:00Nachos.
15:01Ooh, I'm glad you said nachos.
15:02That's, that's the sleeper one right there.
15:05Nachos with some, like, carne asada, um, some beans, um, and some, and some, uh, sour cream.
15:15Oh.
15:16Okay.
15:17Now we're talking.
15:17Now we're talking.
15:18You do sound like.
15:19Guacamole?
15:19You sound like a Southern Californian, my man.
15:22Hey, thank you.
15:22There you go.
15:24That's, that's, yeah.
15:25Nachos.
15:25I mean, that's an upset, because, um, pizza is everyone's favorite, and, you know, hot sandwich,
15:29you just throw it in.
15:30Question number two for D'Anthony Melton, what's your favorite ice cream flavor?
15:36Cougars and cream.
15:38Hands down.
15:39Yep.
15:39It's, it's the one seed, there's no doubt?
15:42No, man, no doubt, no doubt.
15:44Cougars and cream.
15:44Any chance I can get, I'll take that.
15:46Come on over, man.
15:47I got, like, three buckets of it in the freezer at all times.
15:50It's my kid's absolute favorite, too.
15:53So.
15:53I love it.
15:53Don't, don't tip me.
15:55Okay.
15:56Is there one ice cream?
15:57Is there a flavor that you're like, nah, not in a million years?
16:01Uh, mint, mint chocolate chip.
16:03Oh.
16:04Oh, okay.
16:05I love chocolate chip, but, like, nah, you, you ruin it with the mint.
16:08Like, no.
16:09I mean, it is.
16:10My three and a half year old is crying right now at home hearing that, but she'll get over
16:13it.
16:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:15I hope she still lives.
16:16She'll be good.
16:17Tough for mint to get slapped in the face like that on St. Patrick's Day, D'Anthony.
16:21Good call.
16:22Oh, yeah, you, you're right.
16:23You're right.
16:24Yeah.
16:24Yeah.
16:24Hot take.
16:25Hot take.
16:26Yes, it was.
16:28Okay, last one.
16:29If you had to choose one climate, which would you prefer to live in?
16:33Icy cold or scorching hot?
16:40Because I don't like the cold at all, but, like, in the hot, I get headaches.
16:44So, like.
16:45I mean, like, Palm Springs or Minnesota?
16:48Yeah.
16:49That, that, that sound about accurate, huh?
16:52Um, I'm gonna go with Palm Springs.
16:54Okay.
16:55Encino or Alaska?
16:57I mean, I went to Cal State Northridge.
16:59It gets hot in that valley now.
17:01No, it does.
17:02It for sure does.
17:03It get, it get up to 105 sometimes, like, 95 for, like, 105, too.
17:08You, you could afford a pool, D'Anthony.
17:11Oh, most definitely.
17:12Yeah.
17:13Okay.
17:13All right.
17:14I mean, yeah.
17:14I mean, even, even on the mid-level, like, you'd get a pool.
17:17So, um, okay.
17:19Hey, before you go, since you didn't pick it, but we really want to know, what's the whole
17:24Mr. Do Something thing?
17:25Who gave you that?
17:28Brevin Knight.
17:29Brevin Knight.
17:31Yeah.
17:31Okay.
17:32In Memphis.
17:33Do tell the story.
17:35It's crazy, because, like, when he first gave me the name, and, like, he, yeah.
17:42So, when he first gave me the name, I didn't like it, honestly.
17:45I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't really like it at first, but the way he explained
17:50it, and after, like, I watched, like, a broadcast on it, because they started, they
17:53started to call me, like, a little bit, and I was just like, oh, yeah, like, whatever.
17:57And then I, I, I watched, like, a broadcast, and he was talking about it.
18:00And then the way he explained it in terms of, like, oh, like, when he, when he's out there,
18:04he just does, he just does everything.
18:06Like, Mr. Do Something is, like, he's just always doing something.
18:10So, when he explained it to like that, and I was like, okay, I kind of like it.
18:13But at first, like, I thought it was, like, man, like, man, go do something.
18:17Like, you know what I mean?
18:18Like, Mr. Do Something, like, go do something or something.
18:22Like, so that's why I didn't like it at first.
18:24I mean, yeah, it was explained to me, and I was like, you know what?
18:28I like it.
18:28I can rock with it.
18:29Okay.
18:30That's good.
