00:00What is the point of what we're doing?
00:03What is that?
00:04That makes no sense to me.
00:06What's the point?
00:08Yeah, all right.
00:09This is not for me.
00:11Dub Nation, it's Steve Kerr.
00:12You're listening to Willard and Dibs on 95.7 The Game.
00:16Coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
00:20I mean, I was glad that that struck a nerve a little bit.
00:23Because it struck a nerve with me too, to be honest with you.
00:30But I'm excited that Steph Curry might come back.
00:33I'm super curious.
00:35Yeah.
00:36I think that even seeing Steph Curry and Kristaps Porzingis play together
00:41is a major data point to what you want to do next if you're the Warriors.
00:46That's why I always fight back.
00:49And in that call yesterday that we played,
00:52one of the themes that he was throwing out there was, it's over.
00:58And like I said this to you before, I'll mention it to the entire audience.
01:02Anytime anybody wants to hit this show with it's over,
01:05I'm going to hit you back with that doesn't exist.
01:08I mean, like we'll die at some point.
01:10It does.
01:11It doesn't.
01:12For the Pacers this year, it's over.
01:14No, it's not.
01:15They're 15 and 54.
01:16Right.
01:16But it's over.
01:17They won't make the play in.
01:18They won't make the playoffs.
01:20It's over.
01:21Your it is different than my it.
01:23A sports team is always working on something.
01:28Whatever it is that you, like, oh.
01:31But the it is referring to like your ability to win a title this year.
01:34That's your it.
01:35That's what the it is.
01:36That's not my it.
01:37That's the majority of people's it, I think.
01:40And our caller from Brentwood, when he talks about it's over.
01:43I would disagree.
01:43He might say the whole thing's over.
01:45No Pacer fan, the second Halliburton got hurt, no Pacer fan thought they were winning a title this year.
01:51No Celtic fan thought that they were going to win a title, but they might.
01:54But they've actually got star players still playing.
01:57My point, no Pacer fan went into this year thinking we got a shot to win this thing.
02:02No Celtic fan went into this year thinking they had a shot to win this thing.
02:05Let's take a Jazz fan.
02:07Like a Jazz fan is looking at this year, and I don't think they're like, it's over.
02:11I think that a Jazz fan's like, we just acquired Jaron Jackson Jr., and sure, they're in the process of
02:18a tank,
02:19and we may agree or disagree with it, but that in and of itself is the thing that's happening.
02:25They are working on building a roster, building something that at some point they feel might lead to going for
02:33a ring.
02:34But for this year it's over.
02:36But if it's not, well, again, that's your it.
02:38That's not my it.
02:39That just means you're doing something that may lead to something next year.
02:44There's a journey.
02:45There's a story.
02:46There's a thing that's always happening.
02:47Do you know what I mean?
02:49Like Jimmy Garoppolo gets hurt, and you can go, it's over.
02:52And I'd go, ooh, you got Nick Bosa because of it.
02:55There's a thing.
02:57Like every single thing has a reaction to it, and therefore is another building block toward whatever it is you're
03:05doing.
03:05Now, if you're the Warriors, tucked into that is, like Steve said, yes, you're trying to win every basketball game,
03:12and you can get into that.
03:14But what I'm telling you is I'm into both.
03:16I'm absolutely into let's win as many games as possible.
03:20Let's see if you can get a playoff series and go from there.
03:22But I'm also into the data for next year.
03:25I want to see Steph and Kristaps play together so I can form more of an opinion on whether or
03:29not I think that might be the thing next year.
03:31And I'm with you on that.
03:32I think just when you talk about fans or callers or whatever who say it's over, I can't speak to.
03:39I think it's Anthony from Brentwood.
03:40I think it was Anthony.
03:41I don't know what he actually thinks and what his it is.
03:44But for me, and I said this about, you know, two months ago when Jimmy got hurt this season, for
03:49me as a championship team, it's over.
03:51Does that mean I'm not interested in what we've seen?
03:54Of course not.
03:55Like, D'Anthony, is he playing too well to be around next year?
03:59And poor Zingas and Guy and, you know, Pat Spencer and all the rest of it.
04:02And that part of it is not over because I'm into the games and I'll watch again tonight.
04:06But the idea of, you know, can you win a title for the Warriors?
04:10Well, you might.
04:11You might be able to.
04:12And I think about NC State and Jimmy Valvano and don't give up, don't ever give up and the tournament.
04:18And, you know, I'm locked in on the tourney.
04:19And so my mind is in that space now where, yeah, you never know, like, what might happen.
04:24I threw that out to you yesterday.
04:26What has a better chance of happening, the Warriors getting the number one pick or the Warriors winning the title?
04:32What is a better chance of happening?
04:34I mean, mathematically, it's probably damn close.
04:38I don't know what the odds are to win the title.
04:39But if they are 100 to 1, that's an implied 1%.
04:43And if they get in the lottery, that is, I think, an actual 1.4%.
04:47So they're kind of like side by side.
04:50And for me, I'd rather be in the lottery and have that 1% as opposed to, you know, go
04:56in the playoffs and have that 1%.
04:57Really?
04:58Yes.
04:59So.
04:59So if you're talking about 1% either way, I think that you have a better, I mean, mathematically, it's
05:07the same percentage, basically, right?
05:09Right.
05:09But why would you not, why would you eliminate the fun of going through the playoffs?
05:14I mean, sure.
05:15Steph Curry.
05:16It'd be fun.
05:17Yeah.
05:18So anyway, by the way, I want to be careful and say, I'm not telling you what your it is.
05:22I'm telling you what my it is.
05:24I get it.
05:25And so if that's your it, then great.
05:27And I tie that it, the it's over because the Warriors aren't going to win a ring.
05:33To me, I tie that it to the whole championship or bust mentality, which I just don't share.
05:40I just don't have that.
05:41And that's fine.
05:42If you do, if that's the only thing that gets you up in the morning and watching a Warrior game
05:47or a 49er game or a Giants game, good on you.
05:50That's just not the way that I fan.
05:55I'm interested in what these teams are doing at all times to try to get themselves.
06:00If they're not in that spot now, well, how do we get to that spot?
06:03And that's what at least good programs do.
06:07That's what good organizations do.
06:09There are organizations that pull the wool over their fans' eyes.
06:13The Padres did this for years.
06:15They did it for years in San Diego.
06:18Every year, they would tell their fans that they're three years away.
06:22The Philadelphia 76ers, trust the process.
06:24That's right.
06:25My rear end, trust the process.
06:27It didn't work.
06:29And in fact, the guy who coined it never plays basketball.
06:33So there's all kinds of ways to look at this.
06:36But that's how I choose.
06:38If you're in a down moment, then my thought is, all right, how do you get back to the moment
06:43where you can be thinking about a championship?
06:45They're 600 to one right now, so it's a .17%.
06:49So they probably got a better chance at the number one overall pick.
06:52Correct, because right now they have a 1.5% chance.
06:55But that presupposes that they're in the lottery, which they aren't yet.
06:59They're not in the lottery yet.
07:01They're not in the playoffs and they're not in the lottery.
07:05They're not in either.
07:08They're in no man's land.
07:09They're in no man's land.
