Transcript
00:00Let's check in now with Rochelle for tonight's weather forecast.
00:03Thanks, Deesha. Good evening, Trinidad and Tobago. Let's get right to your weather.
00:09Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane around 1 p.m. today.
00:15However, at 4 p.m., Melissa weakened slightly to a Category 4 system.
00:20But the National Hurricane Center says catastrophic winds, flash flooding and storm surge remain ongoing across the island.
00:28The NHC said it was one of the most powerful hurricane landfalls on record in the Atlantic Basin.
00:35Maximum sustained winds from Melissa are near 185 miles per hour with widespread damage expected to property and infrastructure.
00:45Melissa is moving at a very slow pace.
00:48So just imagine this slow pace with very intense winds.
00:52So much so that experts are describing this intensity as one of a tornado.
00:59So just imagine this intensity moving very slow over the island.
01:03The winds have been reported so strong in some parts of the country that no structure could withstand them.
01:09One Jamaican citizen described the intensity of the winds as so strong you would not be able to stand up.
01:15Now, so far, at least seven hurricane-related deaths have been reported across the Caribbean,
01:22with three each in Jamaica and Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic.
01:27Just to keep you abreast of how things are looking, former Jamaican Senator Imani Duncan Price stated that
01:34some hospitals on the south coast of Jamaica have had their roofs torn off.
01:39A hospital in St. Elizabeth, Price says, had to move some patients up to higher floors.
01:45And in Mandeville, water has risen up to the roofs of houses.
01:49The storm is expected to hit Cuba and bring severe weather to other parts of the Caribbean,
01:55including the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands.
01:59Now, let's look at what's happening right here in Port of Spain.
