00:16when he would say to somebody i believe in you it's simple it's simple to say but it's meaningful
00:21all these years later and i don't think and that's why i tell people when you have something to share
00:26with somebody share that with them because you don't know what those those words are going to
00:30mean to that person and i've got several stories in my past that i know that the message that was
00:36sent to me he doesn't remember saying it or she doesn't remember saying it but it meant the world
00:41to me at that time eddie pinheiro will kick this off san francisco won the toss they've elected to
00:45defer it will be houston ball and we'll start to see if there are answers on this texans offense
00:52after a clunker on monday night in seattle damian pierce from the eight yard line and the texans
01:00running back one of five on the roster spinning short of the 30 yard line down at the 28 and cj stroud
01:08will make his way out to quarterback this squad one more time monday in seattle a career high in
01:14attempts and a season low in completion percentage about everything that could go wrong on offense went
01:20wrong on monday night and i think that the perspective that he has coming into this game
01:24is is very clear and and it's a good one do the simple things better that's what you have to do
01:30and he talked about having short throws that were open and not being able to make those completions
01:34you saw that completion percentage from last week's game with 49 attempts that is that is just not
01:39acceptable that's not winning football
01:41and on first down stroud to throw deflected at the line and it's incomplete
01:52trying to get it to jayden higgins right out of the gate and it's second down and ten
01:59and this is what you're going to have there's going to be some push in the center of the pocket
02:04and and when you can't get there in this the the 49ers have struggled to get that pressure onto
02:09that quarterback to get those sacks to finish that pass rush play get your hands up in those
02:13throwing lanes and try to make an impact that's what kalia davis did and it brings up second down and ten
02:18on second down and a draw play to chubb a little bit of an opening over that right side and good power
02:43from nick chubb at the end of the run picks up nearly nine but the whole thing with this texans
02:50offense starts with these five guys up front yeah one of the big questions this week in houston was
02:55the shakeup at left guard just going back and forth i think at some point you've got to make that decision
02:59and let this starting five grow and mature together again the wide receiver position you see all those
03:05young guys xavier hutchinson jaylen noel jayden higgins they need to lean on dalton schultz a little bit
03:10today he had a big game last monday night he's going to have to follow it up
03:13with another one here today it's third and one this has been a real struggle for the texans this
03:17year and going up tall to get the pass is jaylen noel and it's a first down houston was just 12 of 25
03:25before that play on third and two or fewer and this could be an opportunity for jaylen noel to
03:31really have a breakout when you have your key players that are down and it's no christian kirk
03:36it's no nico collins here today your young guys need to step up you've seen flashes
03:41from jaylen noel during the beginning of the season in his limited role this is an opportunity
03:46for him with a much larger role this afternoon second time already on this possession that the
03:51texans have gone with six offensive linemen that's blake fisher motioning to the right of the line
03:55and it's chubb on first down and chubb with good yardage from the 41 to the 46 and for this 49ers
04:05defense we know they're missing some players none bigger than fred warner and that means tatum
04:10bethune has to fill some awfully big shoes yeah you're down your top three edge rushers but when
04:15you lose fred warner you lose so much more and this young man has stepped in and done a really
04:19good job and he knows he's not going to replace fred warner he's going to be tatum bethune and that's
04:25what you want to see from him i think one of the big questions today is the middle of the field we
04:29talked about dalton schultz on the offense one of the great things that fred warner was able to do
04:34was that middle linebacker was police that middle of the field second and five here comes some late
04:39pressure and a diving catch made by braxton barrios in san francisco territory picks up eight
04:46stroud had to get rid of it with d winners in his face yeah this is a really nice job by cj stroud
04:52because again he's got a free runner right into his face and look at the anticipation and the
04:57placement of that throw i mean here it comes right on around the outside free rusher d winners right on top
05:03of cj stroud buys a little bit of time but still able to get that ball out to the outside now you're
05:08going to see more braxton barrios today there's no nico collins there's no christian kirk so the
05:13texans have had to go deep into the lineup jared wayne in motion he came up from the practice squad for
05:18this game from the 46 and the handoff to the rookie woody marks who fights his way to the 41 yard
05:27line there's a flag down on the far side of the field
05:29and it's going to cost the texans five
05:37first time we've heard from alan ek our referee
05:43yeah and i think one of the big words that cj stroud talked about this week with the struggles
05:57against seattle was the operation all right there there's the operation right the play calls in in
06:02time but you've got a young guy making the first start kevin just talked about jared wayne coming
06:06and you're going to send him in motion he's got to let dalton schultz get settled with his shift
06:10before he goes in motion so now first and 15 back in texans territory off the play action to the
06:19sideline that's a high throw and it's incomplete xavier hutchinson trying to go up and get that at
06:24the 49ers 46 yard line
06:27one for the texans no nico collins the concussion on monday night in seattle and christian kirk still
06:36out with a hamstring injury and so that leaves you a lot of inexperience these are the career
06:41receptions for the active wide receivers today braxton barrios 136 and nobody else above 33
06:48nico collins had 26 this year
06:53here's marks back into niner territory
06:57to the 47 yard line but now third and long coming up
07:02well i think that the second biggest topic of conversation here for texan fans was was once
07:07you got past the left guard was the wide receiver braxton barrios over jaylen noel and you saw right
07:12there you know sometimes it's the experience and and jaylen noel is just going to have to keep
07:17showing himself at practice and the opportunities he's he's provided during the course of the game
07:21that's why today is such a big day for him to really kind of put a stamp on what he can mean for
07:26this team moving forward well he's got that big play capability we've seen it in flashes not only
07:31preseason but early in the regular season at 77 yards a week ago third and 11 stroud quick toss
07:38it's braxton barrios over the middle spinning through tackles and a texans first down why
07:45braxton barrios plays like that that he's made throughout his career
07:49this is just look at all the space from upton stout right so that's just a quick little slant really
07:56good throw on time by cj stroud before tate and bethune can get in there and make an impact on that
08:03throwing lane
08:04so a first down at the 33 barrios already two catches for 22 yards
08:12nick chubb in it running back
08:16that's noel motioning to the top of the screen stroud look in that direction now has to throw
08:23this ball away and a flag is down there's a flag on the far side of the field and one dropped at the
08:29feet of dalton schultz on the near side who was tangled up with d winters yeah it might have been
08:35michael williams prior to d winters getting there they wanted to run a tight end screen to dalton
08:40schultz and michael williams sniffed that one out
08:43so the center jake andrews snuck downfield just a bit
08:51this is the matchup that's going to determine the game here today i mean this is this is the one that
09:00everybody wanted to talk about this houston offense coming off that poor performance against seattle
09:05you made a point in the open kevin hey this is a one-off that's what we heard down here in houston
09:09okay well you have an opportunity to prove that today against a defense that is struggling with
09:14injuries that you should be able to be very competitive with yeah you lose fred warner
09:18you lose nick bosa no ytor grosmatos no huff and a swing to the edge for chubb who steps through a
09:25tackle and is out of bounds inside the 35 and down near the 34 33 yard line of san francisco picking up five
09:33well domico ryan said look my message this week has been this isn't that challenging this isn't that
09:42complicated he told us i've been telling these guys all week let's play fast let's keep it simple
09:48let's not stress it let's not over complicate it he was trying to make sure they didn't overreact to
09:54what happened last week yeah absolutely that was a that was a tough outing on second down stroud with
10:01some pressure dumps it short and caught at the 30 immediately tackled was jared wayne
10:07and d'amador lenore with the stop
10:11so the first catch ever for jared wayne he played three games last year did not have a catch
10:20his first nfl catch coming out of pittsburgh in 2023 third down and seven opening drive of this
10:31game has eaten six minutes off the clock
10:33they'll bring pressure finding jayden higgins is stroud and he's short by a yard of the first down
10:45and a decision for domico ryan's well when when you're not getting home with your four on a
10:52consistent basis and and you get into these third and long situations and you can force that ball to
10:57come out quick and rally up and tackle before you can get the first down you got to blitz a little
11:01bit and we'll see how much coach robert sala does that you know that that is that is not the way that
11:07san francisco usually rolls but they may have to now with all those edge rushers out here's a huge
11:12snap early in a football game right here went on fourth and one and seattle didn't get it
11:16can they get it on fourth and one here stroud on the quarterback keep tumbling forward and he's got
11:22the first down to the 22 tatum bethune finally brought him down but cj stroud will move the chains
11:31yeah nice job here watch the feel he's going to have he's going to kind of take a little bit of a
11:37step back and he's going to end up finding that soft spot right there and boy he is he's lucky he
11:43got there when he did because titus howard kind of got walked back by kalia davis right there if he'd
11:49waited much longer i think that that pressure over left tackle impacts that quarterback sneak
11:53so the drive continues the 13th play coming up in houston a little indecisive on that play they're
12:04going to take a timeout to talk things over 7 35 to play in the first and a good march so far for

12:32to complete six of eight passes on the opening drive yeah well if you want to come out and prove
12:36to everybody that seattle was a one-off we just didn't transfer what we were doing during the
12:41course of the practice week into that game those are three of the areas where you really struggle
12:45you know i mean cj stroud you know under 50 on 49 attempts the run game was not very very helpful
12:50at all the operation was a mess at times and boy third and fourth down were just a challenge especially
12:56the third and shorts and the fourth first down and 10 at the san francisco 23 yard line
13:03from the eye toss play woody marks well defended by san francisco bethune was there winters was there
13:16a host of niners no gain on the play yeah it is so hard to to run outside with these guys because of the
13:25fast flow on the linebackers and tayton bethune you know occupies the blocker but that allows d winners
13:31to get underneath and make that tackle
13:33so second down and ten for houston
13:38chubble motion into the backfield
13:49off the play fake stroud with time checks it down it's chubb and chubb inside the 15
14:00and another third and short coming up for houston and this is kind of that offense that we've heard about from coach
14:06cayley is is kind of you know the death by a thousand cuts that cj stroud references it's it's you know the
14:12continual ability to make these little plays and put yourself in a position you'll hear a lot of people talk about
14:18staying on schedule and that's exactly what they've done here on this drive and the impressive thing was they had that
14:23one third and long and they were able to get it into a fourth down situation where they could make that decision to go for
14:2815th play of this game opening drive and a third and long one for houston
14:34chubb is the running back wayne in motion
14:38the handoff to chubb cuts it to the left side and he is stacked up by jair brown
14:43oh brown filled that hole so quickly and chubb is dropped for no gain
14:49and the field goal unit coming on for houston yeah this is outstanding watch jair brown back there
14:54look how far he's got to come up to make this play on third and short he sees the gap scheme comes up
14:59fills right in the right spot you saw the way that the defenders took on those blocks that is your gap
15:05he comes down and fills it real quick
15:07so fairbairn on
15:11for a 33 yard field goal try
15:15and a long houston opening drive results in the first point scored against san francisco on an opening drive
15:30this season now it's the off most plays and the longest drive by time this season for the texans
15:37that's the good news they ate a lot of clock the bad news is they had to settle for a field goal but
15:41they are up three nothing yeah you can't check all the boxes on the opening drive but there was some
15:46really good stuff on that drive compared to what they were doing monday night in seattle so take the
15:50positives the biggest disappointment is absolutely going to be the field goal instead of a touchdown
15:55on a drive like that it it's disheartening to the offense and it's a it's a shot in the arm for the
16:00defense to be able to hold on so now it'll be time for the san francisco offense after their defense
16:07buckled down and got the stop and held them to a three robinson coming to work for san francisco
16:14goes sideways to get a little extra space and twists out near the 35 yard line where british brooks gets
16:20the tackle well the 49ers have been crushed by injuries so far this season the next man up philosophy
16:24that two starting quarterbacks matt jones is filled in ably for brock purdy look at the notable
16:29offensive players that have missed games brandon iuk still waiting for him to come back they really are
16:34anxious for ricky pierce all to come back but these two unfortunately will not be back nick bosa
16:39and fred warren yet all of that they're five and two they're three and oh against the division brock
16:45purdy's close to coming back for san francisco and they go to work down three nothing late first quarter
16:53and it's christian mcafree coming off a huge game and he is blasted by ej speed at the 34 yard line with a

17:16so kyle shanahan shakes his head but not because of what's about to happen our first game break with
17:21carissa he's not going to shake his head at that carissa
17:23well giants fans are going to shake their head at this eagles looking for revenge after losing to
17:29the giants two weeks ago and it's saquon all day 65 yard score eagles up early 7-0 over the giants
17:36skip yeah you're right giants fans are not going to like that first and 14 with jones fakes the toss the draw to
17:46mcafree and mcafree up the middle into the arms of aziz al shire and we've got a flag down again this is against the
17:53texans
18:03offside jumping into neutral zone number 51 defense five-yard penalty replay first out
18:10so for mac jones we've seen two penalties in his start today one forward one back but he comes in
18:22leading the national football league in passing yards per game 281 pass yards per game for mac jones off the
18:29play fake he'll roll to the right jones will tuck it and run and mac jones with a blocker out in front behind
18:35and jawan jennings gets the first down and then a flag down at the end of the play
18:44a lot of early laundry on this 49ers drive

19:01yeah one of the guys that makes his presence uh as a blocking wide receiver and great on third down
19:06you see him shallow right there he recognizes he's going to lock up and get a block he's great right
19:11there and as you separate you can see that hand go up and just get a that face mask so unfortunate right
19:17unfortunate right there those ones happen uh just got to be a little bit cleaner stay down keep your
19:22hands away from bumping around that face mask in that helmet area so back we go again now first to 12.

19:34shotgun snap jones to kittle didn't have a catch last week starting a new streak this week
19:40on national tight ends day his first catch of the afternoon the san francisco 49ers offense
19:49another injury to talk about that's right in the middle matt hennessey making his first
19:53start since week 18 of 2022. yeah but the good news there is he and mac jones spent a lot of time
19:58together quarterback center during otas during training camp again it's not just because it's it's
20:04tight end day but george kittle he's going to be a key today you mentioned he didn't catch a pass
20:09last week but he was awesome in the run blocking oh boy mac jones gets blasted as he airs it out for
20:15sky moore the pass is incomplete jones with pressure from will anderson he took a wall up as he got rid
20:23of that one yeah i just you know sometimes right there's certain guys that you just can't let get to
20:30your quarterback and do that you've got two of them here today will anderson and daniel hunter you've got
20:35to control your edges and right there with that play action they they did not have that designed
20:41well it was not done from a technical standpoint it was it was designed well it was just not executed
20:46well on that pass block the top scoring defense in the national football league the houston texans
20:52san francisco a third and seven they rush four they get to jones who gets rid of it behind mcafree
20:58and the pass is incomplete it was will anderson again moose who was able
21:02to affect the quarterback on that play and the punt team coming off yeah and and as bad as that
21:08was you had trent williams kind of late getting off the field and in a little bit of pain watch 71
21:14coming from that side he gets bumped and he's a little bit slow getting off the field not a hundred
21:18percent right now and and we talked about that other matchup the houston offense versus the san
21:23francisco defense that was going to be key because this is going to be hard for san francisco's offense
21:28against this houston defense thomas morstead to punt jalen noel the deep man from the 16. noel
21:37losing yardage dropped at the 12 by saran neal and here comes this texans offense and cj stroud seven
21:45for nine on the opening drive his team with a three nothing lead over san francisco at home
21:53three of the world series as the scene shifts to dodger stadium in los angeles vladimir guerrero jr
21:58leads the blue jays against shohei otani and the dodgers with the series tied at a game apiece
22:03game three of the world series tomorrow right here on fox texans back to work deep in their own end
22:10with a three nothing lead and we're seeing this offense coming off of an impressive 16 play 57 drive
22:1857 yard drive going to work from the 13.
22:26it's marks on first down hops through a hole over the left side and is down
22:31at the 18 yard line well tough opponents have led to tough results for the texans in their two wins
22:36averaging 35 points and 385 yards per game no turnovers in their four losses though 14.3 points
22:43per game under 120 fewer yards and they've turned it over six times their two wins are both against
22:48teams currently with just one win their four losses all against teams with winning records and of course
22:54as you can see at the bottom of your screen san francisco five and two that's a winning record
23:00second and five off the play fake stroud checks it down to woody marks marks with room on the sideline
23:08across the 40 galloping across midfield good cut back inside the 40 and marks all the way down
23:14inside the 35 at the san francisco 32 jair brown finally caught him 50 yards downfield
23:24yeah and who has woody marks in coverage i don't know if it's tatum bethune he steps up now as he
23:29releases tatum bethune goes on to the quarterback and there is absolutely nobody out in the flat to cover
23:36woody marks a tremendous pass catcher in his college days he had 261 career college catches between
23:46mississippi state and usc and he's just tied for the texans longest play of the season
23:55stroud floating it down the sideline for higgins the amador lenore with outstanding coverage
24:00the pass incomplete and it's second and ten yeah cj stroud wanted a penalty on that but i agree with
24:08you kevin i thought that was played really really well outside corners have the ability to use the
24:14sideline to their advantage you're going to funnel them that way and then you're going to press him
24:18that way you get your head back around to turn and track the ball that that's really really well done
24:23cj stroud was pleading for a flag none there the amador lenore was battling that left quad all week
24:31they're happy to have him out there on the second down at the draw play to chubb and nick chubb
24:37with a little burst he picks up nine and here we go again it'll bring up third and short and allison
24:42there seems to be a little spring in the step of this texans offense absolutely kevin i mean how many
24:47times did cj stroud tell us this group is still confident they were convinced that what happened last
24:52week was out of character they would flush it and get back to winning football he said we have to
24:57keep our swag and guys they have it after that long opening drive they were fired up nick callie loving
25:03what he sees especially from that young kind of unproven wide receiver group the confidence very high
25:08after that opening drive and on third and one another quarterback sneak for cj stroud and another
25:14first down for the texans tatum bethune was there but that's the second time we've seen stroud sneak
25:19it for a first down yeah they were not very successful in the running play last week against
25:25seattle so yeah let's try something different and it's the most direct route you know it doesn't
25:30always have to be the tush push we've seen several teams around the nfl go back to that traditional
25:35quarterback sneak and have a ton of success with it right right now that this this san francisco defense
25:41some of the run fits malik mustafa on that on that big run by nick chubb down too far inside
25:46a little better that time as they get some help from kalia davis up front and pick up of one for
25:53chubb yeah and it's unusual because this is not what we normally see from the san francisco 49ers
26:00defense and we've talked about the injuries and and what they're dealing with right now but but the
26:04standard that they have there and the consistency in the system it's not just the coaches i mean even
26:08these players know it very well you know tatum bethune can talk to fred warner even though he's on ir
26:13and get great information from him you you can talk to the guys to play these positions
26:17ahead of you because this system has been in place and everybody knows how to run it
26:23second and nine stroud too tall for jayden higgins this connection there between the quarterback
26:30and one of his rookie iowa state products at wide receiver and that that is you can't have that one
26:36there's where some of the frustration is on the easy plays right so it's just a simple speed out this
26:42is throw and catch and that's airmailed a little bit up over the top so you know and cj told us he
26:47goes i i am missing some of my open throws and i've got to eliminate that you know some people think
26:53those are easy throws they're not i mean if you've got any doubt in your mind you stress over the easy
26:59throw and he's just got to relax and just play football and let that ball come off his hand stroud on
27:05third down there you go to the sideline a little better toss hutchinson can't get the first down
27:11as it'll take us to the end of the first quarter of play in houston the texans offense on the field
27:20for most of quarter number one and at the end of one the home team with a three nothing lead
27:25just a stone's throw from where we are in houston herman park we are at nrg stadium alongside
27:34daryl johnston with allison williams on the field mike perera in our studios in los angeles i'm kevin
27:38kugler we start this with a field goal in the second quarter and if you're sitting at home going these
27:44guys aren't talking at all about the 49ers offense well that's why 23 to 4 is the play differential
27:50through one quarter 34-yard try for camey fairbairn and the kick by fairbairn is good and the texans
28:01with a six nothing lead three seconds in to the second quarter they took the football to start things
28:10off now this offense of the san francisco 49ers will try to answer six nothing houston when we return
28:17cj stroud little smile on his face and why not two solid offensive possessions to start this
28:26football game for an offense that really struggled on monday night in seattle yeah a lot of plays he
28:30can check out on that microsoft surface tablet right now but i think the area that he's got to get
28:34concerned in is right on that that that cusp of the red zone i mean that that has been an achilles
28:39heel the last couple of games here and you know it started out here again today six points shoot that's
28:45one play for this san francisco 49ers offense and we still want to see what the plan is today for
28:51kyle shanahan brian robinson on the return and robinson upended as he gets across the 25 yard line
28:58you say that somewhat tongue-in-cheek but not really because there were a couple of options that kyle
29:02shanahan talked with us about what they were going to do offensively against this texans defense somehow
29:08four plays doesn't seem like enough to have any idea what he's planning right we don't have enough
29:12information yet to figure it out but you know are you going to go back to that 40 play thing and it
29:15was just amazing talking through how you do that what what your opponent provides you the opportunity
29:21to get to 40 rushes i don't think that's today's plan but i'm excited to see what he's going to roll
29:25out here on first down and the first touch for christian mccaffrey just the third time in his career
29:33that he didn't touch the football in the first quarter and he gets the touch to start the drive in the
29:39second quarter against a texans defense with this defensive line that is elite in the national
29:45football well we've already seen will anderson right i mean that that guy is controlling that
29:49first series and he'll give all the credit to those guys inside tim settle you know sheldon rankins
29:56mario edwards tommy togei the guys that rotate through there he said that's the engine for this
30:00defense but they've got great players on the back end as well they'll bring pressure on mac jones he's in
30:06trouble gets rid of it to use check as that pocket collapsed on him and the pass is incomplete it was
30:11tommy togei who was the guy that got to mac jones with that blitz yeah and as strong as that group is
30:18as a front four you've got the luxury now to add two more jalen petrie is one of the better players
30:24that you'll see in that nickel position across the nfl he's a great cover guy he's a great blitzer he's
30:29a great run supporter number five from the houston texas is one of the funnest guys i've had the
30:34opportunity to watch play this season yeah he's all over the field and has no problem blitzing
30:39as we saw there third down and three
30:44a cap real motion out of the backfield four-man pressure jones short toss caught by demarcus
30:51robinson but tackled immediately as we speak of him there's jalen petrie and the tackle short of the
30:57first down it's just he's he's such a good player i mean he just and he's down inside that box where you
31:03can utilize that skill set so much he's right here
31:09just mirrors the receiver demarcus robinson right there and and you can see him squeeze up that's
31:15that's third and short and and he gets it before you even get close to getting a first down
31:20so lorsted the punt the long snap coming from john weeks who was a 15-year houston texans long snapper
31:27before joining the 49ers this season jalen noel calls for the lake fair catch and he makes it
31:33near the 18-yard line jalen petrie the former baylor bear making a good open field tackle
31:40on his opposite number to hold the 49ers short defensive coordinator matt burks and head coach
31:45domiko ryans are fired up it is rare you see statistics like this and then records like that
31:54at the end of those stat lines point differential plus seven a minus five turnover margin you're five
31:58and two plus 39 point differential plus four turnover margin and you're two and four that's like going to
32:05math class and just not understanding anything the teacher is saying just i i have no idea what that means
32:10that it is such a shocking description of the numbers everything that that translates to a win
32:16has not helped out the houston texans third possession for houston the previous two with
32:22field goals and on first down this is hutchinson on the receiving end of the stroud pass and he's
32:27close to a first down where renardo green makes the tackle now if you were around houston all week
32:33the big discussion among many was what was going on with the left guard spot lake and tomlinson
32:39juice scrugs they've alternated back and forth and they've alternated series here today at the
32:44left guard spot yeah and they feel they're better with the rotation and i don't know how long you can
32:49say that at some point one guy has to be better than the other and you allow that starting five to
32:54kind of blend and gel it's hard when you're doing all these double team blocks and you're passing games
32:59up front you've got to get comfortable with that guy playing next to you second down and a yard and a
33:04burst up the middle that's chump with a first down flag down though behind the play
33:09at the 35-yard line it's an 11-yard gain if it stands but it doesn't look like it's going to

33:41nice job of shedding the block and he draws the holding penalty on jake andrews
33:47so with the penalty which was well upfield at second and eight
34:01paxton barrios motioning top of your screen stroud look in that direction finds barrios with his third
34:06catch of the day but immediately tackled by the rookie upton stout a third round pick for san francisco
34:13when you watch this defense play he flashes quite a bit there he really does and he has grabbed
34:18attention since training camp we had the san francisco 49ers in week two and kind of tracked that team
34:23all the way through training camp and upton stout had gotten all the coaches eyes during the training
34:28camp session and a little bump in a row with some injuries in and out of the lineup but the 49ers very
34:33very excited at what his future looks like so now third down and four texans three of six on third this
34:42afternoon
34:46good protection stroud to the sideline the catch made that'll be a first down jalen noel run out
34:52by upton stout but cj stroud had time and was able to find his open man for the first yeah trying to get
35:00cj stroud to to think a little bit right here here's tatum bethune right there he's going to step in and
35:05come back the winners comes on the blitz you've got a defensive end dropping back so they're showing
35:10a five-man pressure it ends up being a three-man pass rush those are some of the things that can
35:15confuse cj stroud as he's working through some of these early bumps in the season on first down hand
35:22off not a lot up the middle this time to the 33 it's a pickup of two for nick chubb
35:37last week you saw an offense that had 254 yards a season low rating a three for 19 combined on third
35:44and fourth down but maybe more important than anything moose is they're staying on schedule right
35:49now second and eight is not necessarily on schedule but for the most of this game
35:53they have been in manageable downs and distances yeah it's hard for robert salah's group because
35:58of the injuries and and that group that that houston played on monday night jaron reed leonard williams
36:03the edge rushers that they have in seattle that that's a tough front here's stroud looking deep he's
36:08got noel out there drops it in to jaylen noel inside the san francisco 25
36:1945 yard pass from stroud to noel yeah just a big sail route coming all the way across the field
36:27you hold the defenders opposite with that little curl route and that puts malik mustafa in coverage and in
36:34a tough spot with jaylen noel coming all the way across the field into that open space it allows
36:39cj stroud to get that ball out in front of him not a defender over there to curtail that throw
36:52first down and 10 stroud with the pocket collapsing he's going to tuck it and run and cj stroud gets
36:58positive yardage to the 19 yard line it's second down
37:05we've already seen a 50 yard pass and a 44 yard pass from this offense last week we told you put
37:12up 254 yards in seattle already 207 yards in the first half yeah but different styles right the 50
37:18yard pass is is awesome to jaylen noel but the check down to woody marks for the 44 yard one was
37:25was fantastic that's that's being confident in your game right now cj stroud is playing
37:30really good football to start this game and alfred collins slow to get up for san francisco will step

37:38if you're a 49ers fan you absolutely hate to see this grabbing that left arm
37:42alfred collins the rookie from texas when we were talking with robert solid before the game
37:46unprompted he brought him up said he's got a chance to be a star making some huge strides early here in
37:51the season with everything going wrong on that defensive line one of the real bright spots
37:55second down and six and it's a thin line made thinner without collins now texans will run right
38:03at it and good work by d winters man a sure tackle tatum bethune was also involved in that play the
38:11linebackers stacking up that run yeah this linebacker group it it's pretty impressive and and they just
38:17keep kind of rolodexing guys through right as he's up al shire is on the houston texans he used to be
38:23with the niners dre greenlaw is out in denver houston fans you'll get to see him next week
38:28they're all still very very tight very very close all of them very happy for tatum bethune getting an
38:33opportunity to jump in there for fred warner but uh really really unique relationship with the
38:38linebacker group in san francisco third down and five an empty backfield for quarterback cj stroud
38:45quick toss braxton berrios another first down braxton berrios drew a little higher from folks this week
38:56for being in the lineup last week but four catches already for berrios
39:01yeah you get a little blitz there and you can see jair brown playing off the ball again there's a nice
39:07easy pitch and catch and there's the location we saw earlier where cj was a little bit frustrated because
39:12he airmailed that same kind of speed out and that's the that's a really good sign you come in and you
39:18self-correct later on down the drive and you hit almost that identical route with a blitz coming at
39:23you tenth play of this drive for the texans stroud looking for six open touchdown jayden higgins his second of
39:33the year
39:49really nice job bringing the motion across so here he comes right here and then he goes up into the
39:53vertical spot and he's uncovered and there's your linebacker that's playing short
39:58tate and bethune is kind of deep in that that end zone area and again we talked about it at the top
40:05fred warner was so good at policing the middle of the field as a linebacker in pass coverage i think
40:11that that's going to be one of the areas that that he's just he's irreplaceable in a number of areas
40:17but that one may be the one that that 49er fans start to see more and more during the course of the game
40:22now that middle wide open for jayden higgins and the rookie from iowa state celebrating a 13-0 lead
40:3210-play 82-yard drive for the houston texans took 553 off the clock and they cash in with the
40:41touchdown to jayden higgins what was the first drive 16 16 plays my gosh i mean i just i did not expect
40:48that from this 49ers defense even with the players that are out just i mean they went against atlanta
40:55and atlanta that that's a dynamic offense and and they shut that down this is this is very surprising
41:03line drive kick will bounce through the end zone for a touchback let's get a game break with carissa

41:36again we're still trying to figure out exactly what kyle shanahan had planned for this offense here today
41:41we have not been able to figure that out just because of the lack of opportunity and mccaffrey
41:46trying to find room up the middle and ej speed in his first year with the texans with the tackle
41:52let's go back to that that touchdown and try and figure out what happened so you're gonna you're
41:55gonna motion across there's no movement nobody follows so you got zone all right so it it how did
42:00jayden higgins get loose in that zone so it looks like maybe one two here and then one two here on the
42:05receivers kind of squeezing their zones but i don't know if the winters doesn't drop deep enough i don't
42:10know if tatum bethune doesn't see eyes to the right and slide a little bit more but a little bit
42:16of confusion in the zone coverage by the the niners on that play here's mac jones with pressure coming
42:22and he'll just throw it at the feet of jawan jennings
42:28daniel hunter with the pressure and it'll bring up a third down
42:32and again to your point we don't know what the initial plan was but i will say this texans defensive
42:44line has thwarted some of the things they would like to do at least early on yeah i'm not sure
42:49exactly what that last play was going to be but if we have juwan jennings blocking daniel hunter
42:54you know that that's something that's not going to be sustainable and trent williams was coming down
42:58hard to the inside on third down jones to the edge there's jennings but he stopped well short of the
43:06first down it's jalen petrie again making a stop on third down to keep the 49ers from the chains
43:14i tell you what this this houston defense is legitimate and and again jalen petrie just really
43:20really fun to watch and we we talk about the value of the nickel player today and and you know years ago it
43:27was what do you anticipate pass okay we're going to put this nickel in what do you it's the thing
43:31it's going to be a run okay we're going to put this nickel in jalen petrie hey i'm i'm the nickel
43:35back what are you want to run do you want to pass you want to do anything i'll blitz you i'll cover

44:30like this just the questions that you had about houston's offense and their performance against
44:35seattle it it appears to be a one-off right we started in the open talking about that you know was
44:40that a one-off hey we we feel like we need a little bit more information before they see it boy
44:45they are sending a message here in the first half
44:49the lineup of the eye on first down at the 20 yard line and the handoff is to chubb and chubb
44:55got blasted by jair brown brown really doing a good job of pushing back british brooks helping
45:01penetration and a loss of one yeah they've just got to be able to make a play here and and get off the
45:08field that that is going to be huge for this defense i mean you cannot allow this offense to dictate
45:14the way that they have been this entire half i mean they have not really slowed this group down
45:19at all but now off schedule second and 11 for the houston offense
45:30five defensive backs for the 49ers stroud the toss to the sideline and the first catch of the day
45:37for dalton schultz who's out of bounds at the 27. national tight ends day and dalton schultz getting
45:44into the act and just taking what's there right it first down you have a negative play or no gain so
