00:00The Mets have been looking for an eighth-inning guy, and they got their man, Tyler Rodgers from the San Francisco Giants.
00:06Bit of a surprise. His name wasn't really on the board because we all thought that the Giants were buyers, not sellers.
00:12They bought Rafael Devers. After all, that's a pretty big buy, but obviously they've struggled since they did make that Devers deal.
00:19They have the worst record in baseball since that deal, and now they are around .500, so they decided to pivot and sell.
00:27For the Mets, it's a big get for this year. He is a rental. Rodgers is in side armor with great stuff, great success, having a terrific season, 1-8-0 ERA, but the Mets did pay a very heavy price.
00:42Blade Tidwell, right-hander, who has been a good pitcher in the minors, came up with a couple starts with the Mets this year.
00:48Drew Gilbert, not having a great year, but is a decent prospect.
00:52Jose Budo, who's been kind of up and down with the Mets, but certainly has a good arm.
00:57So the Mets gave up a pretty decent price here for a rental pitcher, but Tyler Rodgers does fit the bill.
01:05He is a good eighth-inning man, and he does improve the team.
01:08Hey, Mets fans. David Stearns is out here dealing, adding another arm to the bullpen.
01:14And Tyler Rodgers from the Giants, he's pitched well this season, 53 games, sub-2 ERA, 1.80 on the season.
01:22Submarine right-hander, the Mets needed to get another right-hander arm in the pen, and David Stearns goes out and gets it.
01:28So I like this fit because the Mets pen just got it stronger.
01:32We knew they needed to get stronger.
01:34David Stearns has addressed that part of the team, which is a weakness.
01:37We'll see what else he can do before the deadline on Thursday.
01:40But when you talk about this trade, a lot of the talk is going to be about what the Mets gave up.
01:46And look, I'm going to keep it a buck.
01:48The Mets, it's a pretty steep price what they gave up.
01:51Jose Budo going out, young arm out of the pen that a lot of Mets fans really liked.
01:56I liked what he did out the pen.
01:57Then they gave up two prospects, Blade Tidwell and Drew Gilbert.
02:01Both ranked the 10th and 12th prospects in the organization.
02:04I know some of y'all out there are prospect huggers.
02:07You want to keep all the prospects.
02:08You can't do that.
02:09The Mets are going to have to give up some prospects at some point.
02:11Do I think this was a bit much?
02:13Yes, but for me, it's not really about the prospects.
02:16I would have liked it better if they didn't have to give up a major league arm that was ready in Jose Budo.
02:20If they could have kept him in the pen, I probably would have liked that.
02:23The prospects are whatever to me.
02:25I think the Mets were selling high on Drew Gilbert and Blade Tidwell,
02:28who projects more as a relief guy out of the pen.
02:31But look, this is a move that Stearns had to make.
02:34A lot of y'all wanted to say, what is Stearns going to do?
02:36Don't want him to be small market Stearns.
02:38Well, he didn't do it.
02:39He went and got two pretty good relievers and an arm that's pitching extremely well this season.
02:44And you're hoping that he can pitch well for you down the stretch.
02:47Another 20 to 25 innings or so down the stretch.
02:49If he can give you that, that would be fantastic for the Mets.
02:52So all in all, I think this is a good deal.
02:54It's a little bit pricey, but you got to go for it.
02:57And the Mets are trying to go for it.
02:58And I like that from David Stearns.
02:59Now the clock is ticking to see what else he will do before the deadline.
03:04So we'll see and we'll keep you posted on that.
