00:00best move by the Mets. Well, you mentioned it. I'm going to go with the Peralta.
00:05Now, I'm sure if you look at the values that they assign to all the prospects,
00:10it'll look negative to some people based on the fact that Jed Williams is a very good
00:15prospect and so is Sproat. But the Mets absolutely needed to get a number one pitcher.
00:20The prices were very, very high and all these trades. I mean, all of them. Shane Boz.
00:25All of them. And this guy is the best guy who's been traded. I mean, obviously, he's not school.
00:30Nobody is, but he is the number one pitcher. I happen to love Freddie Peralta. He'll be great.
00:35In the clubhouse, he was a guy who actually offered to translate for me in that Milwaukee.
00:40Clubhouse, you know, it's a small market. They don't have an actual translator. They have a
00:43coach who does the translating.
00:45Coach was busy, not a surprise. And he speaks perfect English, perfect Spanish.
00:50I speak okay English, terrible Spanish. And he stepped in and was willing.
00:55to do it. So it's a terrific guy. He's a number one starter. They absolutely needed to do it. I see
01:00the Mets are now ranked number three and some ranking, whatever those are worth. But
01:05they needed to do it. And so that's my number one Mets pick. Yeah, you know, the Mets on
01:10like bet MGM are tied with the Phillies for the second most over under projection.
01:15At 90 and a half, you know, the Dodgers are like 102.5 or 103.5.
01:20Everyone's behind them. So whatever they've done, especially late has at least the
01:25betting markets, seeing them as a very strong team, though, of course, they saw him as a
01:28strong team last year. John, I'm going to.
01:30Take best seriously here. The best move. I'm not saying it's the most impactful move because I.
01:35think that will be end up being probably Peralta or Bichette. I think they're.
01:40Best move was Luis Robert Jr. And in a way, it was because of all the other moves.
01:45Uh, and and how little they gave up. Uh, look, uh, Acuna will.
01:50Luis Angel Acuna will probably play in the major leagues for quite a while as.
01:55Utility guy because he could really defend and really run. It's two skills that will help.
01:59Maybe he'll hit enough.
02:00At some point to be a starting second baseman, but that and a pitching lottery guy.
02:05Who they took in the draft last year who hardly pitched is a good trade to me for a guy.
02:10Whose baseline if he stays healthy is play terrific defense up the middle. And again, I.
02:15like it for the other things they've done with Simeon. Uh, and then you add Lindor Alvarez Torrance.
02:20They're really strong up the middle. Robert is a really good defender. Uh, a guy.
02:25Who could run and run at a high success rate, uh, Allah Carlos, uh, Beltran, who just got.
02:30In the hall of fame, this guy steals and steals successfully. He hits lefty pitching, which helps the verse.
02:35Versify their, their lineup. And he hits some home runs, low batting average, high strikeouts.
02:40High strikeouts don't bother me as much because Bichette, Simeon and, uh, Polanco.
02:45For all guys who don't strike out a lot added to Lindor and Soto who don't strike out a lot.
02:50Like that. And, and look, I think there's a real downside. The guy's been injured. He's had a low batting average.
02:55And he strikes out a ton. Is this turnout to be a grand or more expensive version?
03:00Of Jose Siri, maybe, but I, for what they gave up and what the up.
03:05Side is and how he shoehorns in on the team. I really love that move by the Mets.
03:10Yeah. Um, they, they did a lot in a week, right?
03:15They remade the team in a week. Things look bad. We were kind of down on the Mets.
03:20We're all their fans. Uh, not that this was all done in a week. Uh, the groundwork of this.
03:25This was late a long time ago. Peralta, they started working on during the season.
03:29Robert, we know it was.
03:30The deadline last year, year. So that's been many, many months, like nine months.
03:35And, and maybe not nine. My, my math wasn't too good. Seven months. And, uh,
03:40you know, uh, I think all these moves, uh, took a while and they all came down and
03:45a week and, uh, the result of it is a very positive for the Mets. Yeah. Why don't we.
03:50You got flipped to the Yankees, uh, who kind of essentially it was all stay in house.
03:55He signed plus Ryan Weathers in a trade. Oh, what was your favorite thing, John?
03:59Well, I guess it's about.
04:00I'm telling you, right? They needed to get it done. They stuck to the five years. I mean,
04:03I think it's a good deal for.
04:05Bellinger. He's going to make, uh, 85 million over the next two years, which is actually.
04:10More than, uh, than Aaron judge makes, uh, by 5 million, if he.
04:15I don't know that he's going to opt out when he's 32 though. He's already been a free agent a lot.
04:19I think he.
04:20He likes being a Yankee, uh, but, uh, you know, I think it was a good deal for him and I.
04:25I think it was the right deal for the Yankees. They did a nice job with it. And, uh, I think it's good that he.
04:30He's back. Uh, judge is happy. Uh, judge is happy. I think the Yankees are in good shape.
04:35Yeah. Uh, I think I'm going to agree with you, John. I wish I could tell you there was one I liked better than that.
04:40But, uh, I think he's a Swiss army knife. He plays left, center, right. The fact that he also.
04:45He plays first base at a high level matters because Ben Rice is going to be there in case the defense really does.
04:50Struggle there. You could always move Bellinger late in a game and, uh, use somebody else in the.
04:55Outfield. Uh, I know the two years at 85 upfront made, uh, some.
05:00People a little wheezy, uh, queasy. Uh, not me, John. I like.
05:05As a war player, the last three years, he's kind of right in between Bichette, uh,
05:10and Tucker who both got over 40 million on short-term deals on three and four year deal.
05:15And this is a two year deal. If he opts out, uh, if it's a five year deal, those last three.
05:20Years are more in line with what he should probably be paid in that period. Uh, the Yankees.
05:25They strike out way too much. Uh, he doesn't strike out the Yankees baseball, uh, athleticism.
05:30IQ IQ got a little better last year, but that was a lot because of him. It was good. They brought.
05:35They brought him back. Uh, John, what worst move by the Mets? What didn't you like?
05:39All right.
05:40Losing Diaz, uh, bringing in Devin Williams for Diaz. I don't see that.
05:45Uh, Diaz, uh, was the best closer in their history. I mean, I guess someone can make a case for
05:50Doug McGraw, but he was an outstanding closer, maybe the best in the league and Devin Williams.
05:55He's still worried about because he wasn't a very good closer when he was the Yankee closer.
05:59Yeah. To me.
06:00Um, again, John, I wish I could tell you, I, I differ with you. It's the move. I didn't like either.
06:05I get how volatile relief pitching could be. And by the way, Edwin Diaz was volatile as.
06:10And Matt, there were very, very good years that were not so good years. And there was obviously an injury.
06:15A freak injury, but an injury right in the middle that cost them a season. Uh, we know how this could go.
06:20But, uh, I, I am always worried about the underlying number argument for.
06:25A pitcher, uh, that's the Devin Williams argument that the underlying numbers were not that far.
06:30Off from the guy who was dominant in Milwaukee. If anyone should know that player, it's David Stern.
06:35Uh, he was the general manager who brought Devin to the majors and, and.
06:40And he had great success with the Brewers. It was a sub two ERA the last three years before the.
06:45The Yankees acquired him, but on the field and in the clubhouse, I'll take Edwin Diaz seven days a week.
06:50Twice on Sunday. Uh, and you know, with the Mets money, I wonder if they could.
06:55And should have, and should have had them, uh, both, uh, flip side yet Yankees, uh, worst.
07:00Uh, I think it's giving Grisham the qualifying offer, uh, 22 million.
07:05Uh, which you reported first was going to be 22 million.
07:08Uh, I like them could.
07:10I've sort of seen Grisham, uh, going somewhere else and them getting the draft choice.
07:14And I think.
07:15That's what some of them envisioned and it didn't turn out to be correct.
07:18So I can't kill them since.
07:20I thought Grisham might be able to get a three for 45 somewhere else, but in retrospect.
07:25Looking back at it, I think it was going to be hard with that qualifying offer for Grisham to get a.
07:30A three for 45.
07:31Right.
07:32So, uh, I think it was an error because I don't, I don't know that he.
07:35He's necessary.
07:36You know, you've got a lot of outfielders on this team, right?
07:38You've got Bellinger.
07:39I'm.
07:40I'm still a believer in D.
07:41Dominguez.
07:42Obviously we're a little skeptical after last year.
07:45Spencer Jones is coming.
07:47Uh, you know, I, I don't.
07:50I don't think it was necessary.
07:51Uh, he obviously was pretty good last year.
07:53He hit more than any other center.
07:55Fielder in the game.
07:56So, uh, I can't kill him for it.
07:58Uh, you know, they're, they're running the.
08:00The whole team back, right?
08:01It's the same.
08:02It's the same team.
08:03So I think the fans aren't going to be thrilled overall.
08:05Uh, I, I think they'll be better, right?
08:07Cause they'll have coal for the year.
08:09They'll have.
08:10Schlittler for presumably the year, although he's not going to throw 200 innings.
08:14It'll have them for more than.
08:15When they had them last year.
08:16Uh, so I, I think they're actually going to be better.
08:19Uh, and I don't.
08:20It's fine that they brought the team back.
08:22Uh, but, uh, Grisham had 22 million.
08:25That's an overpay.
08:26You know, again, uh, like a more unbiased view is better.
08:30MGM has them with the second highest over under total in the major leagues behind the Dodgers.
08:34So the top.
08:35Top one in the American league, you know, over Seattle, over Toronto, et cetera.
08:39So, uh.
08:40Uh, yeah.
08:41Uh, and, and John, I gotta say Grisham is not my choice here.
08:44I.
08:45Uh, you know, like I heard a lot of people, Yankee fans who love to whine about everything.
08:50Uh.
08:50Uh, saying, well, they got Grisham so they won't bring back Bellinger.
08:53Well, they did.
08:54Like, it wasn't like the.
08:55Money kept them from getting Bellinger.
08:57I don't think they liked the, like the idea of Bella.
09:00Bellinger playing full time in center.
09:02I don't know if they think Spencer Jones is close to ready to.
09:05Do that.
09:06Play full time in center.
09:07You know, so they needed somebody to play center field.
09:10And.
09:10I would quite frankly rather have Trent Grisham for one year at 22 million than three at 45.
09:15Uh, you know, again, if the here's another place, the underlying.
09:19I think everybody.
09:20Agreed with you.
09:21I don't think anyone was paying that three for 45.
09:23I think you were right.
09:24Yeah.
09:25So I'm.
09:25I mean, I don't mind it as a one year gamble that he's going to repeat something that looked
09:29like last year.
09:30I'm.
09:31I'm.
09:32I'm.
09:33I'm.
09:34I'm.
09:35I'm.
09:36I'm.
09:37I'm.
09:38I'm.
09:39I'm.
09:40I'm.
09:41I'm.
09:42I'm.
09:43I'm.
09:44I'm.
09:45I'm.
09:46I'm.
09:47I'm.
09:48I'm.
09:49I'm.
09:50I'm.
09:51I'm.
09:52I'm.
09:53I'm.
09:54I'm.
09:55I'm.
09:56I'm.
09:57I'm.
09:58I'm.
09:59I'm.
10:00I'm.
10:01I'm.
10:02I'm.
10:03I'm.
10:04I'm.
10:05I'm.
10:06I'm.
10:07I'm.
10:08I'm.
10:09I'm.
10:10I'm.
10:11I'm.
10:12I'm.
10:13I'm.
10:14I'm.
10:15I'm.
10:16I'm.
10:17I'm.
10:18I'm.
10:19I'm.
10:20I'm.
10:21I'm.
10:22And I think they're a reliever short, especially a power left.
10:27Which they don't have.
10:28Their lefties are Tim Hill and Ryan Yarborough.
10:30If they don't need Yarborough in the.
10:32Rotation.
10:32So I'm using Blackburn more as a symbolic.
10:35I think they're one.
10:37They're one pitcher short right now.
10:39Yeah, absolutely.
10:40There are a ton of relievers left.
10:41I think.
10:42Coulomb is still left.
10:43The lefty reliever.
10:45Yeah, I'm with you.
10:46They could use more.
10:47Helping that bullpen.
10:48I don't love either team's bullpen.
10:50I like both teams.
10:51I think.
10:52Overall, they're in very good shape.
10:54Some of the Mets are in a lot better shape than we thought they were going to be.
10:57But I think they're both a little short in the bullpen.
11:00Obviously, the Mets added some bullpen.
11:02He's his late Luis Garcia, who you mentioned first.
11:05And some others, obviously.
11:07They got one in the Milwaukee trade with Peralta, with Myers.
11:12Could be a reliever.
11:13But I feel like the bullpens are still a question mark for both teams.
11:17Yeah, look, Harrison Bader signed today, John.
11:22As we're doing this, a two-year deal with San Francisco.
11:25Financially, should the Yankees have let Grisham.
11:27Go and be like, let's bring in Bader to be at least like the center.
11:32Fielder for two years.
11:33I haven't heard the money on it, but let me guess it's going to be like 10 to.
11:3712 million in there, I would get.
11:38Right, 20.5.
11:40Oh, okay.
11:41So you actually.
11:42I know the numbers.
11:42So it's in that 20 million.
11:44Would the Yankees have been better off doing that?
11:46And then.
11:47Then like having a little more money to spend on another pitcher in some way, a reliever.
11:52starter instead of bringing Grisham back again, like they have to make the Grisham decision.
11:57When I think Bader, et cetera, was going to be looking for a lot more years and money than two.
12:02a 20.5.
12:03So they had to make that decision.
12:05Could Bellinger have held them even more high?
12:07Hostage if they didn't have Grisham.
12:09So, you know, like things play in a way, but it's just something to think.
12:12You know, I'm with you.
12:13I think Bader, a right ain't bad, better defensively.
12:16Grisham.
12:17Grisham is still okay defensively, but I don't think he was as good last year as he'd been in the past.
12:22Obviously, Grisham gives you more power, but Bader played great for the Phillies.
12:27And as you know, he's a friend of the show, so that always helps as well.
12:31But yeah.
12:32In retrospect, looking back on it, related to the Grisham, yeah, I would have done Bader instead.
12:37Grisham and got the pitcher.
12:42Grisham and got the pitcher.
