00:00How we doing, everybody? It's Tyler Ward here for the New York Post Sports YouTube channel, co-host with my
00:05guy Dexter Henry of the Street Out Flushing Metropolitan Podcast.
00:08And today, we're going to talk about these Metsies as they've done something that they haven't done all that much
00:12lately, and that's win ballgames.
00:14The Mets take two out of three against the LA Angels is what we're going to recap in this one.
00:18The key takeaways are the highs, the lows, and everything else in between to take away from this matchup there
00:22in Anaheim.
00:23From there, we're going to get into Carlos Mendoza, David Stern's award the Mets land when looking at club philosophy.
00:30I've been advocating for weeks now here on the New York Post Sports YouTube channel to each and every one
00:34of you that change is needed and change is inevitable.
00:37The Mets are making changes, but how much and how drastic and how fast is what we'll get into?
00:41And what changes can they still make for this roster for the better now that Ronnie Mauricio is on the
00:46shelf just like Francisco Lindor for a month and a half to two months?
00:50Hit that like and subscribe button on your way in and make sure to rate, review, wherever you get your
00:54podcasts.
00:54Now to hop right into this one, everybody, let's begin with the immediate gut reaction to the Mets taking down
01:00the Angels two out of three.
01:01And from a fan, a reporter talking at a point of view, I got to say, it's obviously nice.
01:05Listen, is this team still 10 games bowl of 500?
01:08Yes, they are.
01:09But in order to dig yourself out of a hole, you have to start somewhere.
01:12And that's what the Mets showed some levels of life to be able to do this past weekend there in
01:16Anaheim as they rallied back in game one.
01:18And other matchup initially down three nothing, which really feels like 30 to nothing for a Mets offense.
01:24That's been a bottom feeder in baseball to begin the season.
01:27Thankfully, that did not held true as we would see the Mets rally in game one of this matchup and
01:32ultimately get all the way back onto winning this one.
01:35Four to three was your final.
01:37And the key takeaways from the Mets rallying back in this one especially wasn't just their ability to step up
01:41the way that they did,
01:42but it's who stepped up for them and these matchups in particular,
01:45especially when we look at someone like, for example, Marcus Simi and Hams have a huge hit in this ballgame
01:50that was able to drive in a pair of runs.
01:52That really set them up beautifully and ultimately to get the victory here
01:55when Christian Scott, after getting a little shaky of a first inning, really got in a group for the Mets
02:00from there.
02:01He won five rock solid innings, had himself eight strikeouts, no walks, two earned runs allowed, three runs total on
02:0774 pitches.
02:07That is a nice rebound of a start for the young right-hander, Christian Scott,
02:11who is now added to this Mets rotation, as could I say,
02:13because I'm the injured list with the lumbar inflammation that he is dealing with on his back.
02:17So Christian looked good, the Mets bullpen was cruising, they did their job,
02:21and ultimately the Mets were able to take game one four to three.
02:24They're nice and one of their better comebacks of the entire season.
02:27Game two of this matchup was another score by its final score of four to three,
02:31and it was another day where the New York Mets did find themselves losing by at least a couple runs.
02:35They were down at least a pair.
02:36However, they were not able to fully prevail this time around.
02:39After rallying to find themselves ultimately with the lead, the Mets found themselves in the seventh end game two of
02:45this matchup.
02:45Ultimately, that was not able to stay put there as a tight end initially is what I meant to say.
02:50We get on to extras and in extra innings, the Mets cannot get the job done, okay?
02:53They had opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to do something with runners in scoring position.
02:58They could not do enough in this instance, okay?
03:00They especially had runners at, you know, the corners with no outs,
03:04and then you saw a double play by Bo Bichette, which did not help them at all.
03:08And then from there, you just saw the Mets not get the offense like what they needed with that ghost
03:11runner in extra innings,
03:13the way that the Angels absolutely pounced and took advantage of it.
03:15So in game two, the Mets were really close to making a serious victory, but they couldn't do it.
03:19And part of the reason for that wasn't just the lack of continued offense,
03:23but it was Nolan McClain surprisingly not giving the Mets the length that they needed.
03:27Now, Nolan did pitch 78 pitches in this outing, but it hasn't changed the fact that he only won four
03:31innings
03:32and did get worked a decent amount, you know, even though he gave up one walk and had six strikeouts,
03:36McClain was working a lot of counts, and that has been the one early bugaboo you could give to him
03:41because otherwise, he has been absolutely nails, and he has been as dominant as a young,
03:45absolute stud of flamethrower can find himself being, not just with the flames, but it's really the movement.
03:50I mean, the type of horizontal movement that Nolan McClain is in a class of its own.
03:54It really is slim to none, a very special thing that we should appreciate as Mets fans
03:59for however long that we're going to have him and have him healthy, especially.
04:03Tobias Myers, Huasca Brosben, and Craig Kimbrell all did their jobs masterfully on the pitching end,
04:08and then it was Austin Warren, again, getting dealt a bad hand.
04:10Again, you can't expect the offense to do so little, and then there to not be a turnaround
04:15where the other team's going to pounce at some point.
04:17That's what happened here.
04:18Mets drop game two of the three-game set, which then sets us for the series finale
04:23that just concluded at the time of me recording this one.
04:25The Mets take down the Angels comfortably 5-1, and the heroes in this one starts and ends
04:30with Mr. Swaggy V himself and Mark Vientos.
04:33Listen, Mark has been loving playing out west this year, okay?
04:36We think of the San Francisco Giants series where he literally batted over .500.
04:40We look at now this series against the Angels.
04:43Went out west is when you're going to get Swaggy clearly at his best,
04:46and Vientos was not only looking good with nice scoops at first base,
04:49but the offensive ability included not one but two home runs on the day for Mark Vientos,
04:54who soon now has four on the season, pairing that with a Carson Bench,
04:58who looks so good with both the bat and the defensive skills,
05:01diving out, making gorgeous catches to end the ballgame on Vaughn Grissom
05:04that we saw there in the ninth inning.
05:05He did his job in the Mets.
05:07While they didn't do anything crazy offensively, they just chipped away
05:10and did what they needed to do, and that's the most important thing, right?
05:12MJ Melendez staying productive for the New York Mets as well,
05:15and he's been a nice find for them, obviously, from the Kansas City Royals this past season.
05:20But if we exclude the offensive upside in the 5-1 victory for the Mets,
05:23let's now talk on the pitching because that's really what sticks out of Reinstrum
05:27more than anything here, okay?
05:28Clay Holmes, talk about being reliable.
05:30Who had on their bingo card from him signing with the Mets
05:33on a $3 or $30-plus million contract to enter the 2025 season
05:37for the first time in years that he's been stretched as a starter,
05:39going all the way back to 2019 as a Pittsburgh Pirate.
05:43You mean to tell me that Clay Holmes is essentially the most consistent starter the Mets have?
05:47Yes, that is the reality that we find ourselves in, okay?
05:50Clay was not only really good last year, posting right around 3.5 ERA
05:54in over 160 innings, but he has stepped up even better this season, okay?
05:57Even while dealing with a little bit of a hammy injury that he obviously did not miss a start for
06:01but had a start cut short prematurely because of it.
06:04Clay Holmes, 6.2 innings of brilliant work, 4 hits allowed, 1 earned run, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts.
06:11We're loving ourself some Mr. Clay Holmes.
06:14Vice and McLean Pryor, I apologize, but Clay Holmes has looked unbelievably well.
06:1899 pitches, now a 1.69 year-round season.
06:21It goes without saying, but if the Mets do somehow, someway find an ability
06:25to dig themselves out of this current hole and route that they're in,
06:28it's going to be the strongholds on the pitching end of guys like Clay Holmes
06:31helping lean the pack in that regard.
06:33Because then if you can get enough offense, when Clay's dealing like this,
06:36you're going to make it work.
06:37Luke Weaver and Brooks Raley both were fantastic, coming in as relievers
06:40to round out the ball game.
06:42And lo and behold, the Mets go on to finally win a series.
06:44Still 12-22 on the season, so they still got a full 10 games worth of wins
06:49to climb just to get to 500.
06:51But for Mets fans, they're just hoping for something to be happy about.
06:54Now this is something that you can clean on to.
06:56Now, speaking of cleaning on to, this is something that the New York Mets
06:59have still done with their manager in Carlos Mendoza
07:02and to a higher degree, obviously, in David Stearns.
07:04Now, as I've told you guys on this platform and on my own personal YouTube show
07:08many times over, and I'll say it again, I understand how this business works.
07:12I understand that David Stearns' likelihood of being parted with
07:16is slim to none, especially just early in the season.
07:18I understand that many managers have been parted with in the first halves
07:21of the year to save faces, even when they aren't completely at fault.
07:24And that is where we find the conundrum still going on with the Mets
07:27and Carlos Mendoza.
07:28The Mets, instead of coming out with a confident remark publicly to media,
07:33came out with an exclusive remark per David Stearns,
07:35an interview with Anthony Tacoma of MLB.com to come out with a pace
07:39to essentially reassure Mendy that he's not going anywhere.
07:43David Stearns has been reassured to a degree that he's protected
07:46from Steve Cohen down.
07:47So whether you like it or not, that change is not happening right now.
07:50And do I think it will be to this club detriment?
07:52I don't think it will.
07:53I know it will.
07:54And when it does, we'll be here to talk about it and say,
07:56oh, wow, color me shocked.
07:57It's almost like we had at least a decent grasp as to what was wrong
08:00with this team and why having to change a voice,
08:02change a scenery, change a direction might just not be a bad thing
08:05after all.
08:06Because think about it, Mets fans.
08:08Can the bar really get much worse than what it is right now
08:10with consistent lack of consistency from an offensive standpoint,
08:14from an identity standpoint?
08:15How much more do you need to run it back with the same manager
08:17and have the same bonehead decision-making
08:19or endgame mistakes on a daily basis
08:22before finally grasping the reality that maybe you just made the wrong move
08:25there to begin with and it's time to make a change now?
08:28Because while a change is not going to necessarily guarantee you anything,
08:31as an organization, it brings a level of optimism to the fan base
08:34and it brings a change in direction,
08:36which is a breath of fresh air at the same time.
08:38Many Mets fans would buy into the notion of a new manager,
08:41especially if it's someone that they have an affinity for
08:43in any way, shape, or form,
08:44whether it's a Carlos Beltran who's in the organization
08:47or an Alex Cora,
08:48even though it seems like he's going to be staying put with the family
08:50this year, barring changes.
08:52The point that I'm trying to make here is that while change of scenery
08:54and change of voice is not necessarily going to guarantee winning,
08:57it really cannot hurt at this point in the season
08:59with the way that they've been playing,
09:01the way their roster is completely dismantled
09:03because of injuries and inconsistencies
09:04and how David Stern's built in.
09:06He's going to have to eat that the way that he is now
09:08to the fans and us talking heads.
09:09That has not been great a month, month plus into the season.
09:13But I would love to hear from you Mets fans in the comments down below
09:15regarding guys like Carlos Mendoza and David Stern in particular.
09:18Are you okay?
09:19Are you complacent with the fact that this is what it's going to be right now?
09:22Are you content with it?
09:23Or do you have some choice words that you would like to share
09:25in the comments down below
09:26because you feel that this team is not moving in the direction
09:28that you'd hope that they would,
09:30especially with a payroll north of $400 million entering the season?
09:33Let us know in the comments down below
09:34because last but not least,
09:35our final topic today is getting on to trade discussions, okay?
09:39I, myself, and our amazing co-host the other day,
09:41Brandon London here on the New York Post Sports Channel,
09:44we broke down early trade options for the New York Mets
09:46courtesy of our amazing John Heyman here at the Post's article
09:49that he dropped, giving us a nice deep dive of guys
09:51that can make sense for the Mets.
09:53So to piggyback off that conversation, knowing that Ronnie Mauricio
09:56is now out with injury, I implore you Mets fans to let us know
09:59in the comments down below who is an early potential trade target,
10:03a candidate from a team that could find themselves as either a seller
10:06or a win-for-win trade type scenario,
10:09be willing to part ways with an asset that can impact this Mets infield right now.
10:14Lindor's on the shelf a month and a half,
10:15so unfortunately is Mauricio at minimum.
10:18And because of that, the Mets have shifted Beau Bichette to short,
10:20which is unsurprising, Beau to third, pardon me,
10:23that being Beatty to third, and kind of seeing what's going to happen from there.
10:26But the concern that I have is not only Bichette's great look at third base,
10:31he's gotten a lot better defensively there over the past couple weeks,
10:33and him at shortstop when he hasn't been there much this year
10:36and he's not a good shortstop defensively,
10:38leads to a level of concerns.
10:40But you just add in the complete lack of depth in the lineup that Mets have now.
10:43From having no Lindor to no Polanco to no Robert,
10:45you have to do something.
10:46And now that you don't even have Mauricio, who's your backup shortstop option for Lindor,
10:50and you already trade Jet Williams and Luis Anjo Acuna this past offseason,
10:54and how fitting is it that in the one year the Mets decided to trade two,
10:58you know, top assets of shortstop prospects, basically,
11:01in Acuna and Jet Williams this past offseason,
11:04that they are now four shortstops down,
11:06if you include them, as well as Mauricio and Lindor.
11:09Why? Because Mets fans are not allowed to have nice things.
11:12But if there's one player, again, from that conversation that I could take away that I know
11:16would add an immediate jolt to this Mets lineup,
11:18and would clearly help put them on the right path to getting consistency going,
11:23it's Yandy Diaz, okay?
11:25Out of all the players that were in John Heyman's article,
11:27Yandy Diaz is the one who sticks out like a sore thumb the most, okay?
11:30He's a brilliant hitter.
11:31That bet's over .300 still.
11:32You get him at an OPS as well.
11:34That's anywhere from .800, obviously.
11:36Even higher.
11:37You know, we understand he plays in a band box half the year in Tampa,
11:39but he's still a great heading savant no matter where he is.
11:42Yandy is someone that my sofa fellow talking heads are heavily advocated for.
11:45While I don't love the idea of having a logjam of another first-base DH type,
11:49it makes it a whole lot more palatable to do when you inevitably trade a Mark Vientos
11:53or someone along those lines in that deal in order to facilitate it and make it happen.
11:58Now, there are an abundance of players out there in MLB that you can choose from.
12:02That could be viable options for the Mets via trade.
12:04The only reason why we're not deep-diving it more than that right now
12:06has mainly to do with the fact that it's so early in the season.
12:10It's hard to tell what teams this early are going to be willing to even listen
12:13to be a potential seller in any way, shape, or form, right?
12:16So, it's not like we have the pressure on, like, the trade-in line is here.
12:19We know which teams are making playoffs, which ones likely aren't.
12:22That ain't what we're dealing with at the moment.
12:24So, I understand not being for buying as a team 10 games below 500,
12:28but if you do want to see the Mets try to go somewhere
12:31and actually put an effort in this year,
12:33they're going to have to do something that they don't typically do.
12:35In the case of David Stearns, he needs to do something that he has done before,
12:40which is make significant in-season trades early,
12:42like what he did for Willie Domus a couple years ago with the Milwaukee Brewers.
12:46And maybe, just maybe, having a level of authority to say,
12:48hey, we need to go in a different direction managerial-wise
12:51because it's long overdue.
12:53We made a mistake there.
12:54We need to change the voice to change the direction in that locker room.
12:56This is not a personal sight of Mendoza.
12:58But even though Mendy's not a fall for everything,
13:00that can't justify why he's still here as manager
13:03when things are still in complete disarray the way that they are.
13:07So, Mets fans, let me know all your thoughts about the comments down below
13:09and everything that we deep-dive from the Angels series recap
13:12to getting into Stearns and Mendoza
13:14to wrapping up on the trade options for the New York Mets
13:16and who stands out the most to me personally
13:18from John Heyman's latest article
13:20and why you can let us know all your thoughts in the comments down below, everybody.
13:23Thank you all so much for watching.
13:25And this is your guy Tyler Ward for the New York Post here, signing out.
13:28Peace out, folks.
13:32Peace out, folks.
