00:00Sonic the Hedgehog Watermill Press Book.
00:03It starts really similar to an old Archie story because Sonic has shown a ring his uncle made
00:09and has been practicing running every day, and a teenage Eggman's living with him
00:15who blames Sonic for his robot being destroyed, which was an accident.
00:21So that's interesting because he usually does it on purpose.
00:25And I don't remember him destroying his robots by accident before.
00:30He decides to stop living with them, which is a nice surprise,
00:34because I thought it'd rip off the whole story off of the comic.
00:37Or the novel, more accurately.
00:40But then it goes on to rip off the novel anyways,
00:43because it moves on to rip off the story where 200 chili dogs get ordered for Sonic to deliver,
00:49and it was all a trap of Eggman.
00:52So what's new here?
00:54Well, his dialogue's unique.
00:56It gets lame when he starts saying,
00:59but not for long,
01:01and infers himself in the third person.
01:04Why did he waste time he could be spending trying to save his uncle and dog,
01:08stating the obvious to himself?
01:11Just because it's a picture book doesn't justify it being cheesy.
01:15When Sonic's supposed to be cool, obviously.
01:17Oh, how nice.
01:20This is the only version of the story that colors Sally correctly.
01:24At least that's relatively new.
01:26Anyways, it's just like in the novel again.
01:29After padding, since like all of the other picture books,
01:32there are a bunch of unneeded words in it,
01:35Sally leads the way to the back of Eggman's factory,
01:38and Sonic sees his family getting turned into horrible looking robots
01:42from the other side of a window.
01:45It's all Sally's fault for slowing him down.
01:48He's faster than her,
01:50so why would he let her lead the way instead of picking her up
01:52and asking her which way to go and running?
01:56This is easily the worst version of the story.
01:59Sonic would have been in such a hurry to save his family,
02:02he would have been too impatient to stop and stay still while listening to her.
02:06He would have picked her up and started running with her
02:09and saved his family in time.
02:11So when I think about it,
02:12it's just as much Sonic's fault
02:14because the writer made him possibly stupid.
02:17At least it's a bidding character
02:19because Sonic's supposed to be a little bit reckless.
02:22Because he's confident,
02:23and that's the natural result of it.
02:25And he's also an optimist,
02:27so it'd be in his nature to let himself believe
02:29that maybe he'd get away with slowing down
02:31because he wants to believe it.
02:34I just find it insulting to his character
02:35that he'd be made reckless in a way
02:37that seriously backfires on him
02:39when this really wasn't a time for him
02:40to think it was worth taking a risk
02:42when his uncle's life was on the line,
02:44and he's supposed to be a good guy.
02:47It's not like he wanted Sally to tell him
02:49why he shouldn't go past the fence
02:50because his only response was to ask who she was
02:53when he had no reason to care at the moment.
02:56And of course,
02:57like in the comic,
02:58I'm wondering why he didn't recognize
03:01the princess of his own kingdom.
03:03To be fair,
03:04not everybody watches TV constantly,
03:08especially not a kid,
03:09so maybe it makes sense
03:11that he didn't happen to see her in the news
03:14or in media.
03:16And she's not on the coins,
03:17she's just the princess.
03:18And it's weird that one moment
03:21she told him she wouldn't go to the factory
03:23if she was him.
03:24And then the next moment,
03:25as soon as he said,
03:26come on,
03:27she didn't nag him
03:28and try to stop him
03:29from going to the factory anyways,
03:31which would have been annoying.
03:34So in this version of the story,
03:35Sonic jumps over the fence
03:36and the book says he took a hold of his ring
03:38and smashed the robots one by one.
03:42This implies he needed the ring
03:44to be able to do that,
03:45which is just disrespectfully weakening him
03:47for no reason
03:48because it doesn't even benefit the story.
03:51Because it's so short,
03:53this is the last time
03:54he's going to deal with robots.
03:56And anyone's going to assume
03:57he's guaranteed to escape alive anyway,
03:59so why even bother raising attention a little
04:01by doing this?
04:02And it's just going to be frustrating
04:04instead of tragic
04:06with you taking it seriously
04:07if a problem for a character
04:09only arises in an adaptation
04:11because the writer made the character
04:14less competent
04:15than he's supposed to be
04:17in the source material.
04:19Like, it's fine to introduce a concept
04:20that wasn't originally there,
04:22but not really to weaken
04:24the character himself.
04:26To be fair,
04:26you could interpret this in good faith
04:28by saying that Eggman's
04:29so competent at making robots
04:31that they're made of such tough material
04:34that Sonic needs a ring
04:35to slice through them
04:36instead of just slamming into them lethally.
04:39But then this really should have been explained
04:41because the instinctive interpretation of this
04:44is that it makes Sonic weaker
04:45because he's the main character,
04:47so you'd prefer for him to be portrayed respectfully
04:49and you think of him first.
04:52Anyway, this is another way
04:53this is a unique version of the story.
04:56Sally didn't have to get grabbed
04:57for Sonic to fight the robots,
04:59so she isn't humiliated.
05:01Though it does bring into question
05:02why Sonic didn't fight the robots directly
05:04and save his family and Archie then.
05:06Because Sally didn't need to be grabbed
05:08to make him do that.
05:10In this one,
05:11he's smart enough to think
05:12if I move really fast,
05:14then my spines would cut through it
05:16and my spines are just my hair,
05:18so it shouldn't actually hurt me.
05:20So he's smarter here.
05:22I guess in Archie,
05:23Sonic bumped his head really hard at one point,
05:25so he's too stupid to think
05:27to fight the robots.
05:29Or too scared of Eggman,
05:31so he just assumed
05:33that he made his robots
05:34too tough to damage.
05:35If that happened to a lot of characters in Sonic,
05:39that'd explain a lot.
05:41But that doesn't make it for idiot balls,
05:43because the fact that that's never explained
05:45means it's not the canon excuse,
05:47and it really needed to be explained to be
05:49because it took years to think of that,
05:51and most people won't.
05:53Anyways,
05:54all that's new here
05:55is that Sonic compassionately comforts Sally
05:58because he didn't find her dad.
06:00Sally says her friends in her
06:01will do anything to get rid of Robotnik.
06:03Oh, good, how unique.
06:06So this version of Sally
06:07is okay with having him killed.
06:09Which is good,
06:09because it reassures me
06:10that in this continuity,
06:12Eggman only stayed a problem
06:13for a little bit after this.
06:15Sadly, the story doesn't describe
06:17the Great Oak Slut.
06:19The story rips off
06:20the novel version of the story after this.
06:22By fortunately having a ring,
06:24conveniently bring Chuck and Matsuki
06:26back to normal.
06:27It's magical in another continuity,
06:29so whatever.
06:30I can assume the only other ability
06:32it can do
06:33is this.
06:35And Sonic's desperate and an optimist,
06:37so it's realistic that he would have tried this
06:39with no reason to think it would work.
06:42It still would have worked better
06:43if the story Adam already knew
06:45Rings can grant wishes, though.
06:48Or at least had the narration say
06:49that his desperation for him
06:51to be brought back
06:51and the sheer amount he cared about him
06:53is what caused him to do this,
06:56which would at least be
06:57emotional storytelling.
06:59Instead, it's like,
07:00maybe this will work,
07:01I don't know.
07:02And you'd think,
07:04a part of his wish
07:05would also be
07:06Eggman's nice.
07:09Chuck didn't remember
07:10what he went through
07:10for no reason,
07:11when what part of his brain
07:12being turned to metal
07:13and only altered to remove free will
07:15would make it not record memory
07:17it could play back later.
07:19And the story ends
07:19by reassuring the audience
07:20that the heroes would use
07:21Sonic's other rings
07:23that apparently existed
07:24to de-roboticize everybody else.
07:27We should have been told
07:28there were other rings.
07:29Not like that's impossible,
07:30so it's not a Deus Ex Machina,
07:32but it feels underwhelmingly easy
07:34when we thought
07:34there was only one.
07:36But it would be stupid
07:37if Chuck to only make one
07:39for no reason,
07:40even though it was something
07:41that the family benefited from,
07:43and he had all this time
07:44to make more.
07:45It says now they could
07:46defeat Eggman.
07:48They didn't need to be able
07:49to de-roboticize people
07:50to be able to do that.
07:51Sonic could just run back
07:52to Eggman in seconds
07:53and beat him up.
07:55So the author of this
07:57was Judy Mayer.
07:59This is a version
08:00of the first Sadie M novel
08:02where Chuck and Mutsuki
08:03get roboticized
08:04just as much because
08:05of Sally and Sonic
08:06as Eggman
08:07because Sally slowed him down
08:09talking to him,
08:10and Sonic uncharacteristically
08:11let her
08:12when he's supposed to be
08:13more impatient and compassionate
08:14than reckless.
08:17At least it cut out
08:18all of the lame filler
08:19by having teenage Eggman
08:20just leave right away
08:21after Sonic smashes
08:22his robots by accident
08:24this time.
08:25Good,
08:25because it always made
08:26Chuck look like an idiot
08:27with skewed priorities
08:28that he let Eggman
08:29live with Sonic
08:30despite his protests.
08:32And the Raiders
08:33once again
08:34too lazy to explain
08:35why he's an orphan
08:36living with Sonic.
08:38I have to wonder
08:39if the story
08:40was something
08:40Sega of America
08:41considered canon
08:42at the time
08:42because it kept
08:43getting remade
08:44even as late as 1995,
08:47which is confusing
08:48when they already
08:49had a better backstory.
08:51Again,
08:52Eggman gets Sonic
08:52to leave Chuck alone
08:53by ordering a ton
08:54of chili dogs
08:55from his stand
08:56so he could have
08:56them roboticized.
08:59And like in the novel version
09:00that's heavily ripped off,
09:01Sonic and Sally
09:02have the common sense
09:03to destroy the robots
09:04and save Chuck and Mutsuki.
09:06And Chuck and Mutsuki
09:07simply get to
09:08roboticize with a ring,
09:10which was only worth
09:10being anticlimactic
09:12because at least
09:13it's better than Archie
09:14where Chuck getting
09:15free will back
09:16made no sense as well
09:18and him being
09:20diroboticized
09:21was something
09:21Sonic didn't
09:22do anything to cause.
09:25Despite how much
09:26worse the story was,
09:28I'm glad it was
09:28different enough
09:29that he stopped
09:29feeling like it'd be
09:30seen as a waste of time
09:31to review this.
09:33But it'd feel
09:33less like a waste of time
09:35if they did more
09:36new with it
09:37had hammers
09:39not be the thing
09:40that was in that
09:40factory Sonic
09:41went through.
09:42So,
