Sonic the Hedgehog Watermill Press Book.
00:03
It starts really similar to an old Archie story because Sonic has shown a ring his uncle made
00:09
and has been practicing running every day, and a teenage Eggman's living with him
00:15
who blames Sonic for his robot being destroyed, which was an accident.
00:21
So that's interesting because he usually does it on purpose.
00:25
And I don't remember him destroying his robots by accident before.
00:30
He decides to stop living with them, which is a nice surprise,
00:34
because I thought it'd rip off the whole story off of the comic.
00:37
Or the novel, more accurately.
00:40
But then it goes on to rip off the novel anyways,
00:43
because it moves on to rip off the story where 200 chili dogs get ordered for Sonic to deliver,
00:49
and it was all a trap of Eggman.
00:52
So what's new here?
00:54
Well, his dialogue's unique.
00:56
It gets lame when he starts saying,
00:59
but not for long,
01:01
and infers himself in the third person.
01:04
Why did he waste time he could be spending trying to save his uncle and dog,
01:08
stating the obvious to himself?
01:11
Just because it's a picture book doesn't justify it being cheesy.
01:15
When Sonic's supposed to be cool, obviously.
01:17
Oh, how nice.
01:20
This is the only version of the story that colors Sally correctly.
01:24
At least that's relatively new.
01:26
Anyways, it's just like in the novel again.
01:29
After padding, since like all of the other picture books,
01:32
there are a bunch of unneeded words in it,
01:35
Sally leads the way to the back of Eggman's factory,
01:38
and Sonic sees his family getting turned into horrible looking robots
01:42
from the other side of a window.
01:45
It's all Sally's fault for slowing him down.
01:48
He's faster than her,
01:50
so why would he let her lead the way instead of picking her up
01:52
and asking her which way to go and running?
01:56
This is easily the worst version of the story.
01:59
Sonic would have been in such a hurry to save his family,
02:02
he would have been too impatient to stop and stay still while listening to her.
02:06
He would have picked her up and started running with her
02:09
and saved his family in time.
02:11
So when I think about it,
02:12
it's just as much Sonic's fault
02:14
because the writer made him possibly stupid.
02:17
At least it's a bidding character
02:19
because Sonic's supposed to be a little bit reckless.
02:22
Because he's confident,
02:23
and that's the natural result of it.
02:25
And he's also an optimist,
02:27
so it'd be in his nature to let himself believe
02:29
that maybe he'd get away with slowing down
02:31
because he wants to believe it.
02:34
I just find it insulting to his character
02:35
that he'd be made reckless in a way
02:37
that seriously backfires on him
02:39
when this really wasn't a time for him
02:40
to think it was worth taking a risk
02:42
when his uncle's life was on the line,
02:44
and he's supposed to be a good guy.
02:47
It's not like he wanted Sally to tell him
02:49
why he shouldn't go past the fence
02:50
because his only response was to ask who she was
02:53
when he had no reason to care at the moment.
02:56
And of course,
02:57
like in the comic,
02:58
I'm wondering why he didn't recognize
03:01
the princess of his own kingdom.
03:03
To be fair,
03:04
not everybody watches TV constantly,
03:08
especially not a kid,
03:09
so maybe it makes sense
03:11
that he didn't happen to see her in the news
03:14
or in media.
03:16
And she's not on the coins,
03:17
she's just the princess.
03:18
And it's weird that one moment
03:21
she told him she wouldn't go to the factory
03:23
if she was him.
03:24
And then the next moment,
03:25
as soon as he said,
03:26
come on,
03:27
she didn't nag him
03:28
and try to stop him
03:29
from going to the factory anyways,
03:31
which would have been annoying.
03:34
So in this version of the story,
03:35
Sonic jumps over the fence
03:36
and the book says he took a hold of his ring
03:38
and smashed the robots one by one.
03:42
This implies he needed the ring
03:44
to be able to do that,
03:45
which is just disrespectfully weakening him
03:47
for no reason
03:48
because it doesn't even benefit the story.
03:51
Because it's so short,
03:53
this is the last time
03:54
he's going to deal with robots.
03:56
And anyone's going to assume
03:57
he's guaranteed to escape alive anyway,
03:59
so why even bother raising attention a little
04:01
by doing this?
04:02
And it's just going to be frustrating
04:04
instead of tragic
04:06
with you taking it seriously
04:07
if a problem for a character
04:09
only arises in an adaptation
04:11
because the writer made the character
04:14
less competent
04:15
than he's supposed to be
04:17
in the source material.
04:19
Like, it's fine to introduce a concept
04:20
that wasn't originally there,
04:22
but not really to weaken
04:24
the character himself.
04:26
To be fair,
04:26
you could interpret this in good faith
04:28
by saying that Eggman's
04:29
so competent at making robots
04:31
that they're made of such tough material
04:34
that Sonic needs a ring
04:35
to slice through them
04:36
instead of just slamming into them lethally.
04:39
But then this really should have been explained
04:41
because the instinctive interpretation of this
04:44
is that it makes Sonic weaker
04:45
because he's the main character,
04:47
so you'd prefer for him to be portrayed respectfully
04:49
and you think of him first.
04:52
Anyway, this is another way
04:53
this is a unique version of the story.
04:56
Sally didn't have to get grabbed
04:57
for Sonic to fight the robots,
04:59
so she isn't humiliated.
05:01
Though it does bring into question
05:02
why Sonic didn't fight the robots directly
05:04
and save his family and Archie then.
05:06
Because Sally didn't need to be grabbed
05:08
to make him do that.
05:10
In this one,
05:11
he's smart enough to think
05:12
if I move really fast,
05:14
then my spines would cut through it
05:16
and my spines are just my hair,
05:18
so it shouldn't actually hurt me.
05:20
So he's smarter here.
05:22
I guess in Archie,
05:23
Sonic bumped his head really hard at one point,
05:25
so he's too stupid to think
05:27
to fight the robots.
05:29
Or too scared of Eggman,
05:31
so he just assumed
05:33
that he made his robots
05:34
too tough to damage.
05:35
If that happened to a lot of characters in Sonic,
05:39
that'd explain a lot.
05:41
But that doesn't make it for idiot balls,
05:43
because the fact that that's never explained
05:45
means it's not the canon excuse,
05:47
and it really needed to be explained to be
05:49
because it took years to think of that,
05:51
and most people won't.
05:53
Anyways,
05:54
all that's new here
05:55
is that Sonic compassionately comforts Sally
05:58
because he didn't find her dad.
06:00
Sally says her friends in her
06:01
will do anything to get rid of Robotnik.
06:03
Oh, good, how unique.
06:06
So this version of Sally
06:07
is okay with having him killed.
06:09
Which is good,
06:09
because it reassures me
06:10
that in this continuity,
06:12
Eggman only stayed a problem
06:13
for a little bit after this.
06:15
Sadly, the story doesn't describe
06:17
the Great Oak Slut.
06:19
The story rips off
06:20
the novel version of the story after this.
06:22
By fortunately having a ring,
06:24
conveniently bring Chuck and Matsuki
06:26
back to normal.
06:27
It's magical in another continuity,
06:29
so whatever.
06:30
I can assume the only other ability
06:32
it can do
06:33
is this.
06:35
And Sonic's desperate and an optimist,
06:37
so it's realistic that he would have tried this
06:39
with no reason to think it would work.
06:42
It still would have worked better
06:43
if the story Adam already knew
06:45
Rings can grant wishes, though.
06:48
Or at least had the narration say
06:49
that his desperation for him
06:51
to be brought back
06:51
and the sheer amount he cared about him
06:53
is what caused him to do this,
06:56
which would at least be
06:57
emotional storytelling.
06:59
Instead, it's like,
07:00
maybe this will work,
07:01
I don't know.
07:02
And you'd think,
07:04
a part of his wish
07:05
would also be
07:06
Eggman's nice.
07:09
Chuck didn't remember
07:10
what he went through
07:10
for no reason,
07:11
when what part of his brain
07:12
being turned to metal
07:13
and only altered to remove free will
07:15
would make it not record memory
07:17
it could play back later.
07:19
And the story ends
07:19
by reassuring the audience
07:20
that the heroes would use
07:21
Sonic's other rings
07:23
that apparently existed
07:24
to de-roboticize everybody else.
07:27
We should have been told
07:28
there were other rings.
07:29
Not like that's impossible,
07:30
so it's not a Deus Ex Machina,
07:32
but it feels underwhelmingly easy
07:34
when we thought
07:34
there was only one.
07:36
But it would be stupid
07:37
if Chuck to only make one
07:39
for no reason,
07:40
even though it was something
07:41
that the family benefited from,
07:43
and he had all this time
07:44
to make more.
07:45
It says now they could
07:46
defeat Eggman.
07:48
They didn't need to be able
07:49
to de-roboticize people
07:50
to be able to do that.
07:51
Sonic could just run back
07:52
to Eggman in seconds
07:53
and beat him up.
07:55
So the author of this
07:57
was Judy Mayer.
07:59
This is a version
08:00
of the first Sadie M novel
08:02
where Chuck and Mutsuki
08:03
get roboticized
08:04
just as much because
08:05
of Sally and Sonic
08:06
as Eggman
08:07
because Sally slowed him down
08:09
talking to him,
08:10
and Sonic uncharacteristically
08:11
let her
08:12
when he's supposed to be
08:13
more impatient and compassionate
08:14
than reckless.
08:17
At least it cut out
08:18
all of the lame filler
08:19
by having teenage Eggman
08:20
just leave right away
08:21
after Sonic smashes
08:22
his robots by accident
08:24
this time.
08:25
Good,
08:25
because it always made
08:26
Chuck look like an idiot
08:27
with skewed priorities
08:28
that he let Eggman
08:29
live with Sonic
08:30
despite his protests.
08:32
And the Raiders
08:33
once again
08:34
too lazy to explain
08:35
why he's an orphan
08:36
living with Sonic.
08:38
I have to wonder
08:39
if the story
08:40
was something
08:40
Sega of America
08:41
considered canon
08:42
at the time
08:42
because it kept
08:43
getting remade
08:44
even as late as 1995,
08:47
which is confusing
08:48
when they already
08:49
had a better backstory.
08:51
Again,
08:52
Eggman gets Sonic
08:52
to leave Chuck alone
08:53
by ordering a ton
08:54
of chili dogs
08:55
from his stand
08:56
so he could have
08:56
them roboticized.
08:59
And like in the novel version
09:00
that's heavily ripped off,
09:01
Sonic and Sally
09:02
have the common sense
09:03
to destroy the robots
09:04
and save Chuck and Mutsuki.
09:06
And Chuck and Mutsuki
09:07
simply get to
09:08
roboticize with a ring,
09:10
which was only worth
09:10
being anticlimactic
09:12
because at least
09:13
it's better than Archie
09:14
where Chuck getting
09:15
free will back
09:16
made no sense as well
09:18
and him being
09:20
diroboticized
09:21
was something
09:21
Sonic didn't
09:22
do anything to cause.
09:25
Despite how much
09:26
worse the story was,
09:28
I'm glad it was
09:28
different enough
09:29
that he stopped
09:29
feeling like it'd be
09:30
seen as a waste of time
09:31
to review this.
09:33
But it'd feel
09:33
less like a waste of time
09:35
if they did more
09:36
new with it
09:37
had hammers
09:39
not be the thing
09:40
that was in that
09:40
factory Sonic
09:41
went through.
09:42
