00:00Sonic and the Tales of Deception, Story 1.
00:03A robot gets destroyed, and Sonic finds out it was Knuckles who did that to save him and thanks him.
00:10It sure was nice of Knuckles to fight robots instead of guard the Master Emerald.
00:14It's so lazy to say that Eggman's robots attacked the city instead of saying the name of the city.
00:22Nothing interesting happens until Eggman reveals that he's going to have Robot B sting the heroes
00:27to inject them with nanobots to turn them into robots.
00:31With the last part, issue 152 of Archie Sonic already came up with that.
00:36This only looks new because it's combining the idea of buzz bombers with the very common, if impressive, nanobots.
00:43And it's only impressive because Sega allowed Archie Sonic's star robotization to be in a novel based on the games
00:50before IDW came out.
00:52Him saying tiny before nanobots is forced from how redundant it is.
00:59Instead of the story immediately going on to have the heroes face the buzz bombers.
01:04I get to see Amy call Sonic amazing, only for it to be undermined by Tails rolling his eyes
01:09when he's supposed to look up to Sonic, so he would really appreciate this.
01:14Like, you can also go the other extreme and have them look up to Sonic too much.
01:18And as usual, it's not even just a matter of supposed to for me.
01:22It's just better for him to admire the main character.
01:26Sonic says she's right that he was amazing.
01:29Game purers get annoyed by this kind of thing because in the game,
01:32Sonic will say no sweat or it was nothing or tell people to stop.
01:37He could just be saying that to present himself as humble when he isn't to make himself look good.
01:42That must have been what I assumed, since I never questioned someone who's supposed to be cocky
01:46being grateful for getting shown appreciation and respect as a normal person would.
01:52It's not even something that requires overconfidence.
01:56This is a bit annoying of him, though.
01:59But if Sega really cared, they would say,
02:01No, don't do this.
02:03Knuckles tells Sonic he couldn't have beaten the robots without him,
02:07and Sonic disagrees while the narration says he's only pretending to be offended,
02:12which adds a little depth to his character.
02:14Sonic really didn't need their help fighting a bunch of measly badniks,
02:18so there was nothing wrong with what he said here.
02:21Tails somehow thinks it was suspicious that it was easy to beat those robots,
02:26even though it's always effortlessly easy to beat badniks.
02:30Somehow Sonic agrees with him,
02:33while Knuckles says that it wasn't easy because there were a million robots.
02:36even though it wouldn't matter how many robots there are.
02:40With most of these people,
02:42all they would have to do is start a spin jump,
02:45and they could just badnik bounce a million times with no chance of getting hurt.
02:50So Knuckles and Tails would have no excuse for fighting in a way that didn't involve the spin jump,
02:55because they're just risking eventually tiring themselves out with all the physical exertion.
03:00Doing it at first is fine,
03:03they just want exercise,
03:04but it would be weird for them to keep doing it that long.
03:09I don't think this writer has ever seen footage of the games before
03:12if robots are being taken as seriously as something they ever try to put up a fight.
03:17They're only a problem when they have projectiles,
03:20and the story hasn't bothered to explain which exact robots these were,
03:25because that would be not lazy.
03:28If there were robots that usually threw or fired projectiles,
03:32and they never did,
03:34then the heroes would have a good reason to be suspicious.
03:36Finally, a huge swarm of robot bees head for the heroes looking like a gray cloud
03:42that shrinks into a cube and heads for Sonic.
03:46Paralyzed in wonder.
03:48I hope the narration's being literal when it says Sonic was hypnotized by the bees,
03:53because if they used magic to hypnotize them,
03:57that would justify them stupidly standing still.
04:01But it's really not worth the irritation
04:03when the bees could have easily been sent to sting the heroes
04:06when they were already distracted biting.
04:09Which is what I thought would happen.
04:11The bees could have attacked them from behind that way.
04:14Knuckles slams Sonic to the ground,
04:17which snaps him out of what's called a hypnotic trance.
04:20But that just causes Knuckles to get stung.
04:23Then the robot bees regroup as the cube,
04:26and fly away instead of trying to sting the rest of them.
04:30Because that would mean Eggman wins.
04:33I have to assume that the robots lost their stingers,
04:36so they're leaving to have Eggman give them some more.
04:39Knuckles somehow wonders what happened to him,
04:42and immediately feels exhausted after he first got infected.
04:46Which is way more overpowered than the metal virus.
04:49If it was that,
04:50then he still would have been able to fight for quite a while.
04:53Meanwhile, if Eggman had used these things instead,
04:56he probably would have won.
04:58You just can't make Eggman as competent as he realistically would be,
05:02because that would end the series.
05:05You'd expect the heroes to get Knuckles to a hospital.
05:08But instead, Tails conveniently decides
05:10to have him connected to machines in his lab.
05:14Why does it say Tails is matter-of-factly saying
05:16that Knuckles is turning to a robot?
05:19He'd be startled by this.
05:22This almost happened to him in Lost World.
05:25It's like he doesn't even care about him.
05:27Which is logical,
05:28because Knuckles bothered Sonic a lot more
05:30than he helped him in the games.
05:31But I'd expect Tails to be more compassionate than Sonic.
05:36Sonic says Eggman has to be behind this,
05:38as if it's some brilliant revelation,
05:40and not something they all instantly assumed to be the case
05:42as soon as robots attacked him.
05:45What lame dialogue that was.
05:47At least it's also written to be angry about this,
05:50showing that he cares.
05:51Ironically, more than Tails does.
05:54Tails says that they've got one shot to help him.
05:57They have to get inside Knuckles and destroy the nanobots.
06:01Or, he could send nanobots of his own against them.
06:04Oh, how convenient, he already has a shrink ray.
06:07Well, it makes sense that he would have wanted to make a shrink ray a while ago,
06:10so he could carry around what's normally big, heavy lab stuff.
06:14Or materials.
06:15I know W doesn't have Tails have a shrink ray in his lab,
06:19because this story actually respects how competent a character he would be.
06:23But I'm still not impressed by this plot point,
06:25because I've already seen literally the same thing happen in Archie Sonic.
06:30The only thing new here,
06:31is that more than just Sonic is going to get shrunken.
06:35Tails under the assumption that nanobots are being controlled by a leader nanobot among them.
06:40It's ambiguous whether that was the case last time.
06:43The story wastes my time with blatant padding having slow pacing,
06:48instead of instantly getting to the part where the heroes are shrunken.
06:51Also, Tails gave Sonic a handheld digital map of Knuckles' innards,
06:55with a flashing dot showing Sonic his location on the map.
06:59How goofy that he already made such a map,
07:01that he never would have thought he would need until minutes ago.
07:05Sonic didn't need a map to do this in Archie.
07:08Sonic's shrunken, and Tails uses tweezers to pick him up.
07:11I also like the extra detail that Tails and Amy knew not to speak,
07:15because the sound waves could have been like a huge gust of wind to Sonic.
07:19And it sure is a magical, magic shrink ray,
07:21to not have Sonic start freezing to death in no time from being so small.
07:26But it's a magical world,
07:27so Tails could have just used a magic material to make the rain.
07:31Sonic's really the only one going to get shrunken, apparently.
07:35So much for the story being new.
07:36Sonic goes up to a door in the metal spot on Knuckles' arm,
07:41that leads him into a metal hole that leads him to an opening of muscle tissue.
07:46How would he be able to see anything?
07:48There would be nothing but darkness.
07:50I just have to assume magic is what's keeping this place well lit,
07:54by making the walls glow in the dark.
07:56It was definitely magic last time.
07:58I mean, he does have magical powers, so why not?
08:03Here I could assume the nanobots were providing the light.
08:07Conveniently, the nanobots only glance at Sonic before returning to their bossization efforts,
08:12instead of trying to attack him like last time.
08:15So they're not a threat at all,
08:16and Sonic even points out they're wimpy as he destroys them.
08:19Eggman didn't anticipate that Sonic would try to destroy them.
08:24Well then what is the point of telling a story like this again,
08:26if it's less engaging than last time?
08:29As lame as the constant jokes were in old Archie Sonic,
08:32at least there was something.
08:34This part of the story is mostly no dialogue,
08:37and just narration describing where Sonic is,
08:40and the fact that he's progressing.
08:42It's taking the cliche kiddie concept seriously instead of parodying it.
08:46Which would acknowledge how silly it is.
08:49It does have Sonic make one pun saying that the nanobots are getting on his nerves,
08:53and then saying Knuckles' nerves, which is lame,
08:56and doesn't take Knuckles' condition seriously.
08:59And the fact that Sonic is the one making the joke
09:02makes it nonsensical that he thought this was worth joking about.
09:06Speaking of no charm,
09:07it wastes even more time by showing Eggman discovering that Sonic is there
09:11in way more words than it needs to.
09:13He finds this out because any damage to the robots alerts him about it.
09:17It was smart of him to make this something that can happen.
09:21It makes sense that Sonic wouldn't get to the brain faster than he did,
09:25because he's covering less ground from being small.
09:28He runs in a circle to create a whirlwind,
09:30which is slightly more interesting than him attacking how he usually does.
09:35I say slightly because he's still done this a million times before,
09:37and the whirlwind not only yanks some of the robots into it,
09:41but has them smack into each other.
09:43So that feels new and also impressed me.
09:46It's also interesting that Sonic gets himself sent up
09:49by letting the breath and Knuckles' windpipe carry into the brain,
09:53and the story says he climbed into the brain,
09:56but it doesn't mention that he had to go through any fluid to do so.
09:59At least it doesn't confirm that he didn't have to, either.
10:03Again, Sonic attacks the robots the way he usually would.
10:08Surprisingly, none of them put up a challenge,
10:10not even the leader of them.
10:12There's not even any dialogue from the leader.
10:15Meanwhile, in Archie,
10:17Sonic actually had a challenge dealing with the nanobots,
10:20which meant that things were actually happening in the story,
10:23and things that I never saw before in Sonic as well.
10:26At least this acknowledges that Sonic shouldn't need anyone
10:29to save him from a fight with a robot,
10:32let alone some weird character that just showed up
10:35who shouldn't exist.
10:37Somehow Sonic destroying the Queen robot
10:39caused all of the other robots to self-destruct,
10:42which would only be possible if it were intentionally
10:44a feature Eggman put into it for no reason,
10:48considering that the self-destruct doesn't create
10:49a huge explosion that would have killed Knuckles.
10:53Eggman would have won here if he had announced to Sonic
10:55that destroying the robots would kill Knuckles that way.
10:58Self-destructing robots was just as stupid in the games as well.
11:03But at least there I can assume that maybe it's not canon,
11:06it's just metalogic for the sake of the player.
11:09Sonic is so dumb, he doesn't know how to get out of here
11:12when it'd be common sense that he has to go back the way he came
11:14and leave through Knuckles' nose.
11:17Eggman rips off the main villain of Inspector Gadget,
11:20saying, next time Sonic.
11:22And because it's a memetic line,
11:24I don't think it has anything but him being made fun of,
11:27which is dissonant with how amazingly competent
11:29and brilliant his idea was.
11:32The story ends with Sonic thanking Knuckles
11:35for taking the stings for him,
11:37but then making it all about himself and his ego anyways
11:39by redundantly saying that he would have stopped the robot
11:41to the last minute anyways.
11:44Even though Knuckles went through something bad
11:46and he had to save him because of what he did for him
11:48that he's dismissing as not being necessary to his face.
11:52This might be worse than how Flateway Sonic treated Knuckles.
11:55This story by Jake Black
11:57has functionally the same premise as an Archie Sonic story
12:00where Sonic has used the shrink ray of his inventor friend
12:03to go inside one of his friends
12:05to destroy Eggman's nanobots
12:07that had made one of them completely exhausted and passed out.
12:10The story's execution was boring
12:12from how blandly uncreative it was.
12:15Because usually the plot's just that Sonic runs around
12:18and destroys the nanobots
12:19the way he usually fights robots
12:21and doesn't deal with any creative challenges.
12:25It only had one new idea,
12:28that he needs to use wind from inhaling to go up to the brain.
12:31But that's a brief moment
12:32that only exists to justify the plot progression.
12:36It's not a new idea that happens
12:38during a fight with the leader of the robot.
12:40who doesn't have any lines this time.
12:43He doesn't try to have any charm.
12:45The story doesn't do enough that's creative and memorable.
12:48So there's less to respect
12:50because he didn't take as much effort to come up with.
12:53Only the beginning was awesome
12:54by making Eggman extremely competent.
12:58For once he acted like he logically would as a genius.
13:01But nothing was done with that
13:03because Knuckles didn't turn into a robot and start attacking
13:06because instead he was taking forever to become a robot.
13:09This is the longest robotization ever chunk.
13:13And that's new, but it's not good
13:14because it makes the robotization just hollow fan service.
13:19The robot Knuckles could have been knocked out
13:20and put in restraint
13:21so it didn't have to take forever for Sonic to cure him.
13:25At least Knuckles got the nanobots in him
13:27without it being because he was stupid.
13:29He didn't trust something that was clearly called to make Robos.
13:36A few improvements doesn't make it good though.
13:38That was great.
13:38All right.
13:43We'll see you later.
