00:00Sonic Superstar's Fang's Big Break.
00:03It starts with Eggman, Fang, and Eggmobiles hovering in front of the islands of Sonic Superstars,
00:09with Eggman giving him the predictable exposition that he's hired him to hunt down whatever wonders are here.
00:16Why is he only telling him this now?
00:18He likes being withholding, apparently.
00:21It is tedious to have to explain yourself.
00:24He just likes being reminded that he's got a position of power over him by the fact that he didn't have to tell him why he was hiring him right away to get him to come here.
00:33He just had to tell him he was going to pay him if he did.
00:37Wait a minute, why does he think he needs Fang in particular to search for anything that let him conquer the world instead of also searching himself,
00:44when so many of the games had him looking for stuff like that by himself?
00:49And here he's just going to stay here.
00:51He didn't think he had to hire someone else to find Project Shadow.
00:56And Sega originally planned on bringing back Fang for Heroes with Bean and Bark,
01:01so it's not that they were considering those characters to be off-limits back then just because it wasn't the classics,
01:07when Amy made it into the Dreamcast game just fine.
01:11Suddenly here, Eggman is doing nothing because he's lazy now, when he could just send a robot to do this for free.
01:17I assume he sent Fang here specifically to look for treasure,
01:22and that would be sort of justified because he wouldn't know how to program treasure hunting strategy and knowledge into a robot.
01:30Although I'd argue that since Eggman's experienced treasure hunting already because he's been looking for the Chaos Emerald since the main Genesis games,
01:38he was the first treasure hunter.
01:40But it makes sense that since the only treasure he ever found was the Master Emerald one time,
01:47he would see an actually successful treasure hunter as superior at this.
01:51The story made more sense in my head,
01:54but explaining that Eggman doesn't know there's treasure here has it make less sense.
01:59Because he's not just looking for treasure.
02:01Any regular old methods of searching the island should be just as likely to work for finding beasts and people that help him.
02:09Him searching the island as well as Fang would make finding whatever he wants twice as fast as the alternative.
02:15Actually, there's no reason for him not to hire a treasure hunter any time he goes somewhere now,
02:20just in case he gets treasure out of the deal,
02:23and only pay him if he does find it.
02:25And I can even use this to figure out why he didn't keep hiring Fang into the modern era.
02:31Either Fang got tired of almost never finding treasure, or he died.
02:35I like that Fang calls Knack a fake name that he dropped years ago,
02:39because I always thought Knack sounded lame.
02:43But it's insulting that Fang the Sniper is allowed to be mentioned, but isn't what he goes by.
02:48When there's no reason he wouldn't go by Sniper when he is a Sniper still.
02:52He's not called Sniper anymore because of censorship, so why was Sniper in the comic?
02:59I don't know why Fang is taking the risk of being condescending to Eggman.
03:03Doesn't he want to get paid and not punched in the face?
03:07Eggman Lampshade says needlessly confusing, and fortunately there's an explanation.
03:13When you're a wanted criminal, you use all sorts of tricks to cover your trail.
03:17But he doesn't mention any other trick than different names.
03:20A different name alone wouldn't work when people still put wanted posters of his face up.
03:27Only a ski mask would solve his problem.
03:30Since when does Fang need to tell people his name anyways?
03:33I thought he never interacted with anyone unless it was an enemy or someone trying to hire him,
03:38aside from him needing to buy food.
03:40Which wouldn't require a name exchange.
03:43So Eggman really does not go to the island while Fang does.
03:47Fang's thoughts are boring, pointing out the obvious.
03:51As soon as he lands on the island, he gets spotted, and the rustling of the grass as a result has him nervous.
03:58Logically, he has no reason to be.
04:00Because he has a stupid little kiddie-fied gun from Sonic the Fighters with him that nobody in his position would settle for.
04:06It looks silly, but it's still hurt, so making him a coward is just out of character for him.
04:13I like that Eggman's sarcastic with him.
04:16Hilarious that Fang thinks Eggman would let him get away with billing him extra when he's lucky he pays him at all.
04:21This was already down to Archie.
04:24This whole plot point where he walks around an island was already implied in Sonic Superstars.
04:28The next page is completely worthless, boring padding where nothing happens.
04:35He finds some giant tracks in the grass for some reason,
04:38and yet another page is completely wasted on boring padding fan service.
04:43There's flashes of light hiding some of the impact when he gets punched in the flashback,
04:48so it's only slightly nice to see.
04:50And in the leftmost square, I'm too disgusted by how his eye bulbs was out to enjoy it.
04:55I'm so bored that I'm talking about the art.
04:59He sees a giant bird, and takes a dumb risk of shooting at him with something that's basically harmless,
05:05without it being foreshadowed that he was hungry enough to resort to this to get grapes.
05:10Why would he ever put up with this pathetic weapon?
05:13Why would he drop it as he's running away?
05:16The story has Fang move around a lot,
05:18and eventually get his vehicle to put a net around the giant animal to capture him.
05:22I guess the reason he did this was to kidnap a minion for Eggman because he's so big.
05:27He could be assuming he would put a bomb in him to force him to be loyal to him
05:31because he's too big to fit in a bad neck.
05:34He goes from looking at him to looking behind him for no apparent reason
05:38considering that no noise happened to make him do that.
05:41Also, he went from having his vehicle be too high in the sky for anyone to hurt him
05:45to being low to the ground, for no reason.
05:49Which only makes it irritating that Tripp trips on something she would have already seen before this
05:54from looking in front of her.
05:56So Fang can get to smash a part of her spear which had a pathetic wood handle instead of metal for no reason.
06:03It's already bad enough that the sharp part of her spear is still there,
06:06so she could just poke him with it, but doesn't.
06:09And the story ends without explaining why she won't
06:12when he's too short to be believable to someone she'd find intimidating
06:15when she has a helmet protecting her.
06:18But knowing that Tripp can spin dash
06:21makes it enragingly forced that this couldn't have ended with her spin dashing him over and over again
06:26because she works for him in the game.
06:29She can instantly spin dash in the games,
06:31so why does it end without explaining why she won't do that
06:34the second his back is turned to make him not a threat anymore?
06:37Why doesn't she spin dash him over and over again
06:39giving him no chance to fight back
06:41because he'd keep getting knocked down?
06:44He doesn't even have his pop gun at this point.
06:47How is he a threat to her?
06:49He could do literally nothing to her.
06:52I assume this is her first intruder,
06:54so the excuse is she wants to go easy on him
06:56because she feels bad about the idea of hurting anyone
06:59and she's a little kid.
07:01Knuckles wasn't like that,
07:03so that's no excuse.
07:04Knuckles had an actually good excuse.
07:09It could have been they didn't believe Eggman,
07:11but didn't beat him up anyways
07:12because just in case he wasn't lying,
07:15he didn't want to hurt someone who was trying to warn him about a thief.
07:18So he didn't even have to be gullible.
07:21I guess the plot is forced by Sega
07:23to ever get intimidated into this.
07:25And that's lame as fuck
07:27because there is a better way to do it.
07:29It's sad when repeating an old idea
07:32would be a better idea than trying to be new.
07:35Just have her get the same line.
07:38I used to assume she didn't know Eggman's side was evil
07:41and just didn't know any better.
07:43And even that would be better
07:44because it could have the excuse
07:46that she lives on a primitive island
07:48with no TV or internet
07:49because it's an island.
07:52I really did assume it was Knuckles' excuse
07:54and that would be better than this pussy ass excuse
07:57that especially doesn't sit well when she's a girl
08:00and she happens to have the wimpier excuse.
08:03The story could have not wasted space
08:06and had enough panels to actually prove
08:08that she couldn't fight her way out of this.
08:10It could have had Fang use
08:12a force field generator of Eggman's
08:14against the spin dash
08:15and then tell her he'll never have his back to her.
08:18So there wouldn't be the question
08:19why wouldn't she just spin dash him
08:21when he's not looking at her
08:22so that he wouldn't know to put the force field up.
08:26This boring story by Ian Flynn apparently
08:28shows Fang getting sent to the setting
08:31of Sonic Superstars by Eggman.
08:33But Eggman doesn't go there himself
08:35when that would get the job done faster.
08:38And he doesn't even know for sure
08:39that there is treasure
08:40so why doesn't he just have his robots do this
08:43and only hire Fang
08:43after the island's been thoroughly scouted
08:46for everything but treasure?
08:48This only makes the plot of the game make no sense
08:51so it never should have existed
08:53because it only makes a character in the game look bad.
08:57Instead of actually explaining
08:59why Trip got intimidated by someone unarmed
09:01who wasn't much taller than her
09:03while she is able to spin dash instantly
09:06and has a helmet.
09:07Instead of the writer caring enough about Sonic
09:10and doing a good job
09:12to say Fang had a force field generator
09:15and show him winning against Trip in a fight
09:17to prove she couldn't beat him
09:19by taking off her helmet wrestling with her
09:22it just makes Trip look like a wimp
09:24who gives up too easily at worst
09:26or only implies such a fight at best.
09:29It's sad when no creativity would have been better.
09:34While we don't need another Knuckles
09:35giving her Knuckles this excuse
09:36would have still been better and forgivable
09:39when she already has enough
09:40to make her different from Knuckles.
09:43It wouldn't have had to end too fast
09:44if it cut out the boring panels
09:46where nothing's happening.
09:48It doesn't have him lie to her
09:50that he came here to warn her
09:51about a potential thief
09:52so she'd have a good reason to follow him.
09:55Which would have been clever of him.
09:57If Sega wouldn't have allowed either of that
10:00that doesn't refute it
10:01that's just lame as hell.
10:04It'd make no sense
10:05if Sega would have actively pushed for
10:07the wimpification of one of its characters.
10:10The only thing great the story does have
10:12is having Fang be capable of
10:14trapping a giant in a net with its vehicle.
10:17Which means nothing to me
10:18because I never knew it could do that
10:20so it comes out of nowhere to make him win.
10:22And it's really the vehicle that's awesome
10:24not him.
10:25We already knew Knack was retconned
10:28when it was called Fang internationally
10:30in the game
10:30so the Knack as an alias thing
10:32doesn't make up for anything.
10:34None of these great things
10:36make up for anything.
