00:00River Island's guest line, wide receiving great, and now with Fox, our friend T.J. Huchmanzada
00:07joins us here on Willard and Dibs.
00:10Hey, T.J., thank you for jumping in on short notice.
00:12How you doing, my friend?
00:13Man, I'm good.
00:14How y'all been?
00:15We're doing fine.
00:16Like, before we play this Mark Schlereth comment for you, would love to just get your take
00:22on everything that we've seen this year from the 49er receiving core, from Kendrick Bourne
00:28coming back and popping, Ricky Pearsall hurt again, and now Juwan Jennings with a sideline
00:33spat with Kyle Shanahan.
00:34What's your take on what's going on, man?
00:37Number one, I'm happy for Kendrick Bourne.
00:40You know, he made a name for himself coming up with the Niners.
00:45They didn't want to pay him, so obviously you've got to take care of your family.
00:48He leaves, goes to New England.
00:49It doesn't work out.
00:51Gets back to the Niners, and the thing is, he is a familiar face at quarterback now.
00:56So, he played with Mack Jones in New England, so it's that familiar face, and it's that
01:00chemistry is crazy.
01:02And so, I'm happy to see that he's playing well after being injured and having some down
01:07years with New England.
01:09I don't know why.
01:11Well, I don't know what's going on with Juwan Jennings, why he would be upset.
01:17The only thing I could think of is that Kendrick Bourne getting too many targets, and he would
01:21like those targets to go to him.
01:23I don't know what it is.
01:24You wanted another deal.
01:25They didn't give it to you.
01:26You're not playing the way you played last year, so the deal you thought you were going
01:31to get after this upcoming season is not looking that way right now.
01:35And so, it's tough in San Francisco.
01:39You lose Bosa and then Fred Warner, man, the offense is going to have to carry.
01:44If this defense can just play top 15, Robert Saleh is a genius.
01:51I always have thought very highly of him.
01:52I know you guys know that, but if he can keep this defense in the top 15, with those two
01:58guys, probably two of the top 10 defensive players in the league, he deserves a ton of
02:04credit.
02:05But Shanahan's a genius, man.
02:06He's going to figure out a way to make it go.
02:08And as a receiver, when you see the loss of a couple of big defensive players, wouldn't
02:12that make you more motivated to go out there and just cook, knowing that you're now going
02:16to have to probably put up 30 to win games?
02:19Oh, of course.
02:20You would hope that's the case.
02:22But I think Jawan Jennings is just, he wanted a deal.
02:27And then Ayuk's out.
02:29Pierce Hall's out.
02:30He's like, okay, this is my time to shine.
02:31Like, everything is going to, Kittle's out.
02:34Everything is going to go through me.
02:36Oh, wait, hold up.
02:37Well, he just got here.
02:38How are we getting 10 catches for over 100, almost 150 yards?
02:42Like, what's going on?
02:44And so, when you, in essence, try to get a new deal and you don't get it, and you see
02:51the starters are out, you feel like, okay, they're going to regret this because I'm really
02:56going to ball.
02:57And that's not happening right now.
02:58He just has to lock in.
03:00And wherever the ball goes, it goes.
03:02But you got to just lock in and just do your job.
03:05The ball is going to come to you.
03:07The great TJ Houshmandzada is with us here on Withered and Dibs 95.7 The Game.
03:11TJ, I want to set this up accurately.
03:13So, Schlereth is on with us yesterday, and we're asking him about both this Juwan situation.
03:18I also mentioned what's happening in Philly, which from the outside looking in feels like
03:23a coaching staff that's now placating upset wide receivers.
03:27They're not running the ball, and now they're suddenly losing games because of it.
03:31So, I mention all of that and put that to Schlereth, and here's what he said, and I'd
03:37love your reaction to this.
03:38Receivers are like children, a lot of them.
03:41Not all of them, but most of them are like the diva ones are like children.
03:46One, you're completely dependent.
03:48Ten other guys have to do their job exceptionally well for you to sniff a ball.
03:53And two, you guys whine and piss and moan if you're not fed.
03:56You're just like toddlers.
03:58And it's incredible.
03:59And like I've said this many times, if you're going to whine and piss and moan, what I would
04:04like to do is take you down to one-on-one offensive line versus defensive line and let some defensive
04:12tackles put you in a guard and let defensive tackles beat the living piss out of you so
04:17that you understand what everybody else has to do for you to sniff a football.
04:21It is the ultimate team sport.
04:25And that position, to me, is the ultimate dependent in that team sport.
04:31We're all dependent on one another doing our jobs, but there's no position that's more dependent
04:36on everybody else doing their job than wide receiver.
04:39And the fact that you guys don't understand that blows me away.
04:44It just absolutely befuddles me.
04:46What do you think of that, TJ?
04:47I agree and disagree.
04:50His comment befuddles me also.
04:52So we're both befuddled.
04:55I'll say this.
04:56He's right.
04:58But Schlereth was a guard.
04:59He depended on a center to help him.
05:02Please believe it.
05:04Everybody on the football field needs the guy next to him playing well in order for him
05:10to do his job the best way that he possibly can.
05:14If the offensive line doesn't block, the quarterback can't do anything.
05:17The running back can't do anything.
05:19The receiver can't do anything.
05:20If the offensive line blocks and the running back misses his protection, it doesn't matter
05:25that you did a great job blocking.
05:27If the protection is great, the quarterback throws a great ball and the receiver drops
05:31it, it doesn't matter.
05:32And so football is the ultimate team game.
05:34I've played with some offensive linemen that were toddlers.
05:38But nobody talks about that.
05:41Nobody talks about that.
05:43I've had the guys that I play with, they know who I'm talking about.
05:47I play with old linemen that were toddlers.
05:49They're crybabies.
05:51But nobody talks about it.
05:53We get the ball as receivers six to ten times a game if you're lucky.
05:58There's 60 plays a game.
06:00And so the opportunities that you have to make an impact in a game are not very high.
06:07The percentages.
06:08When you feel like you can impact a game, it bothers you when you're not given an opportunity.
06:14And I don't understand why other people on your team don't understand that.
06:18Like, if I suck, or I'm not helping the team, you don't see the guys that can help the team crying for the ball.
06:26They know they're not good enough.
06:28It's the good players.
06:29Because they know they can help the team more than they're helping the team.
06:33But I will say this.
06:36I agree with his comment.
06:38But there's toddlers at every position.
06:41They just always want to pick on the receivers.
06:43I don't know why.
06:44I don't know if it's because I'm really going to ruffle some feathers with this.
06:49We look the best.
06:51We built the best.
06:52Like, everybody won't.
06:54Like, I'm just telling you.
06:57I mean, us.
06:59Us in the DBs.
07:00Us in the secondary.
07:02We built the best.
07:03We look the best.
07:04So, I don't know what it is.
07:06But I done played with some toddlers.
07:10At offensive line, it don't matter what position you play.
07:13There's immaturity at every position.
07:16Certain guys show it more than others.
07:18I'll say that.
07:19But I do agree with Mark to a certain degree.
07:21I do.
07:22It's kind of like when I drive home in my Honda Civic and I drive by somebody who's maybe in a Porsche or in a Lambo.
07:28And I automatically hate them, TJ.
07:30Because they got a nice car than me.
07:32Hey.
07:34To me, if you want to be built like that, like Mark, I'm going to give Mark some credit.
07:43Like, pause after I say this.
07:45Mark is, he's in great shape to be a former offensive lineman.
07:50Not good shape.
07:51He's in great shape.
07:53But there's some of Nick Hardwick, great shape.
07:55There's some of these linemen.
07:57Man, these dudes retire and they're bigger than when they played.
08:00Or so, like, the majority of us receivers, I mean, I'm still, I ain't gained a pound in 20 years.
08:07I'm the same way that I was when I was 20 years old.
08:12I'm 48 years old.
08:13I got a six-pack.
08:15So, I mean, could it be that?
08:18I don't know.
08:19But we're not all toddlers.
08:20We're not all immature.
08:21But there's toddlers and immaturity at every position.
08:24That bothers me, though, when they do this because that's a narrative that they always want to paint with the receivers.
08:29That is not always the case.
08:3148 with a six-pack.
08:32TJ, I've never hated you more.
08:36Hey, maybe I'm blessed.
08:38I will say this.
08:39I don't eat a lot of food.
08:40Food is like, I don't eat a lot.
08:43I really don't.
08:43But I weigh 208 pounds.
08:45I played at, like, 205, 206.
08:48No, what's a normal eating day for you?
08:51Take me through it.
08:51All right, so I never eat before noon unless I'm on vacation.
08:56All right.
08:57I drink probably four to five bottles of water a day.
09:01I make an acai bowl probably four days a week.
09:05So, I make the acai bowl, frozen fruit, then the fresh fruit.
09:09I get blueberries, blackberries, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries on top.
09:12So, I eat that four to five days a day, four to five days a week.
09:16Yep.
09:17And then I'll eat dinner.
09:18So, that's it.
09:19That's all I eat all day.
09:20What's a dinner?
09:20Acai bowl and dinner.
09:22What's a normal dinner?
09:25Oh, man, I eat whatever.
09:26Like, last night I had In-N-Out.
09:28Hey.
09:30I had In-N-Out.
09:31The night before, I had a ribeye with some asparagus and mashed potatoes.
09:39What's your In-N-Out order?
09:42Oh, man, very simple, man.
09:43I just get two hamburgers, lettuce, ketchup, mustard.
09:47That's it.
09:47I don't even get fries.
09:48Just a burger.
09:49Yep.
09:49Is it two double-doubles or just two burgers?
09:52Nah, two burgers.
09:53Two regular burgers.
09:54That's it.
09:54You know, very simple.
09:55Very simple.
09:56No animal style.
09:57None of that.
09:57Just ketchup, mustard, lettuce.
09:59That's it.
09:59Yeah.
10:00It's like an eight-yard curl.
10:01Very simple.
10:01Just go out there and drive the DB back and then turn and catch the ball and let's move
10:06the chains, right?
10:07Yeah.
10:08And if I'm hungry, I'll snack on some grapes.
10:11I'll cut an apple up.
10:12I'll eat me some almonds.
10:13I'm not the healthiest eater.
10:14I just don't eat a lot.
10:16Well, I tell you this, TJ.
10:17If you were a toddler, you'd be getting fries.
10:22Hey, man, the fries ain't good for my cholesterol, man.
10:26I have high cholesterol, so I'll try to stay away from the french fries.
10:30Now, I have children to live for, man.
10:32I got to make sure I'm here as long as possible.
10:34Hey, man, I hear you.
10:35And my doctor was just saying that this week, like, hey, with the fried foods, first thing
10:39she said when we started talking about diet.
10:41So, anyway, TJ Houshmanzada is with us here on Weatherton Dibs 95.7 The Game.
10:48Hey, what do you think about, we've talked about Pearsall before, what do you think about
10:54the injury bug that seems to keep hitting him, but obviously in between the injuries,
11:01man, he looks fantastic.
11:03What's wrong with him right now?
11:04What's wrong with him?
11:05It's a knee.
11:06It's a PCL.
11:08So, it's unfortunate, man.
11:10He, when you're a first-round pick, there's a lot expected out of you immediately, and
11:16so he's going to have to figure that out.
11:17I can relate to it.
11:18I was hurt pretty much my first three years, specifically my third year.
11:23I didn't play a snap.
11:24I missed the entire season.
11:25I had some groin and hamstring issues my first two years, and then kind of figured out how
11:31to train the correct way in the offseason, what to do, what not to do, and I was good
11:36pretty much from that point on.
11:37So, he's just going to have to figure out how to get his body ready for the season, and
11:45it's a lot of trial and error, especially if you don't have anybody that you can talk
11:50to, that you can go train with, that just has that experience of, okay, look, this is
11:55what I did.
11:56This is what I think you should do.
11:57Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
11:58Like, meticulous.
12:00Everything in your training is done the right way.
12:02You got to spend money to make money.
12:04And so, you know, a lot of guys, we don't want to spend no money.
12:07How do you think you're going to make money?
12:08And so, put money into you being the best player you can be.
12:13You're going to make that money back.
12:14And so, it's just for him learning how to get ready in the offseason.
12:20Can't have another injury seasoned like this, because then they're going to start giving
12:25up or they're going to go get other receivers, and now you're on the back burner, even though
12:28you're a really good player.
12:30And so, for him, my advice would be try to figure out in the offseason what you were doing.
12:36That don't work.
12:36Don't go back and do that again.
12:38You got to figure out an offseason training schedule and program that works for you, that
12:43can keep you healthy.
12:45You mentioned the hamstring, and George Kittles has now been out for four or five games with
12:49the hammy.
12:50How tough is that, knowing that it may be back, it may be healthy, but it's not all the way
12:54healthy?
12:55What's it like to try to come back and play off a hammy?
12:58And I'm like the hamstring expert, like, because I tore my hamstring three times.
13:04And Marvin Lewis, she just, he was so, and that's why I love Marvin Lewis and Hugh Jackson,
13:10because they were so honest with me.
13:12Like, you get hurt again, we got to let you go.
13:15And I was like, oh, I got two kids.
13:17I can't, I can't have this happen.
13:18And so I got lucky.
13:23I found a guy that helped me out tremendously, and I never had a hamstring problem again the
13:30rest of my career.
13:31I didn't have a muscle problem.
13:32No soft tissue injuries from that point forward.
13:35Once I found the guy, he told me exactly what was wrong, and I trained with him pretty
13:40much, I did his body every single offseason.
13:44I never had another muscle injury to wrestle.
13:46I'm a hamstring guest.
13:47Where anybody got a hamstring problem, they come to me, I put them with my guy, they'll
13:50never have another one again.
13:51That's a guarantee.
13:53And we're going to send the Niners your way, dude.
13:55This sounds pretty valuable right now.
13:56Now, it's not easy.
13:58It's hard work, and that's the thing.
14:00Some people run from hard work.
14:01They want it to be easy.
14:03It's tough.
14:04It's hard.
14:05It's not easy.
14:05It's hard work, but it's worth it.
14:09TJ, how's Brandon doing, and when do you think he's going to be back on the field?
14:13I ain't talked to B.A. in a while, man.
14:16I think what happens is you had these type of injuries, man.
14:20You kind of just go in your own little bubble, and you stay to yourself.
14:25I haven't talked to him.
14:26It's been a while.
14:27I don't really bug guys.
14:28When guys want to talk, they'll reach out to me.
14:30They'll text me or whatever.
14:32So I just assume, man, he's just locked in trying to get himself ready to help the team.
14:39Yeah, and hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later.
14:42It's coming up on 12 months since the surgery, and when you get better as an athlete, and
14:47yet you're not quite all the way back, how tough is it to get over that last, I don't
14:52know, 5%, TJ, to where you think you're ready, but the team may not, or the team thinks you're
14:57ready, but you may not be?
14:58How do you get through that last little bit to get back on the field?
15:03It's all mental.
15:04It's a mental hurdle.
15:05You know, you're running at about 80%, 85%, and you're cutting at about 80%, 85%, and you
15:12just have to mentally be able to understand, like, my body is good.
15:16Now I'm going to go 100%, and everybody's case and situation is so different, the way
15:22their mind works and how they feel.
15:23You know, you have that apprehension of going all out because you're a little nervous, and
15:27once you do, you're like, oh, that wasn't bad.
15:29Okay, I'm good.
15:30But getting to that point, 100% all mental, and it's each case individually.
15:36You just never know how somebody is feeling or thinking.
15:39TJ, thanks for hopping in, man.
15:41Oh, yeah.
15:41We always appreciate it.
15:43All right, man.
15:44Y'all take care, man.
15:45Keep the great work up.
15:47All right.
15:47Y'all enjoy it.
15:48My guys.
15:48Appreciate you, man.
15:49Thank you, TJ.
15:50There it goes.
15:50TJ Huchmanzada joining us here on 95.7 The Game.
15:53I'm going to go to the game.
15:55I'm going to go to the game.
