00:00and we begin in the nfl in the pros because week five is underway thursday night football last
00:06night it was a dramatic one where the niners stunned the rams in overtime heavy dogs in this
00:12one as many as eight and a half point dogs as a matter of fact going in with the niners
00:17absolutely decimated by injuries we knew of course no brandon iuke yet brock purdy was going to be
00:26unavailable for this one brandon i uh george kittle pardon me has been out since week one
00:31there was no juwan jennings there was no ricky pierce saw this was to be the mac jones show
00:38and the christian mccaffrey show and maybe just maybe kendrick born with his former patriots
00:45teammate mac jones could hook up and find some success maybe right well guess what they did
00:51that trio absolutely incredible statistically so here's what we saw mac jones tremendous while
00:57gutting his way through injuries for all the people that remembered him in new england as
01:00not necessarily being all that tough 33 for 49 342 passing yards two touchdowns he really leaned
01:08on kendrick born who did his best jerry rice impression 10 catches 142 yards my god and christian
01:16mccaffrey almost 140 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown as well but the bigger story here in
01:22this one unfortunately it's not really the niners win so much as it is the rams just kept shooting
01:28themselves in the foot kyron williams scored a touchdown to tie up this game after the 20 to
01:33seven third quarter deficit he tied it early in the fourth josh carty has an extra point blocked so
01:40it's 2020 at that point niners go ahead on eddie pinero's 59 yard field goal with about three minutes
01:47to play and then the rams they drive downfield at that point in time pretty effortlessly honestly
01:53between matthew stafford and puka nakua especially only to see williams then fumble the ball on the one
02:00yard line the one yard line guy fumbles the ball how many times have we seen this from prominent
02:05running backs i'm looking at you derrick henry so far this year so he fumbles the ball
02:10niners end up getting stopped at that point in time just decided to try and run clock it was just
02:16run after run after run from christian mccaffrey but still with enough timeouts to give themselves
02:22a chance the rams with good field position after a lack of gain there from short yardage by the niners
02:29get a field goal essentially as time expires from carty forces overtime so we get to ot
02:35niners are limited to a field goal and so that sets up the rams with another possession to either
02:41tie or win the game obviously for those that are unfamiliar with the overtime rules here in the pros
02:46and rams get their turn they go for it on fourth and one now this is the decision that has been
02:53heavily dissected they go for it on fourth and one in very manageable if not short field goal range
03:00to again tie up the game if they want to with still three four minutes remaining in the extra session
03:07and certainly the niners an opportunity to go back downfield and win the game if the rams could not
03:12get a stop and so they elect to go for it obviously but the the crazy part was the two teams that trade
03:20timeouts and sean mcveigh is trying to just trying to draw san francisco offsides to get the first down
03:27that way it doesn't wind up happening good discipline there for shanahan's defense and so
03:31the play call was let's just try and run it up the middle with kyron williams
03:36doesn't work out he gets stopped they turned over on downs they lose the game now the rams
03:43they had been two for two on fourth down in this game to their credit so this was you know the first
03:50time they tried for it and lost but mcveigh i think the big takeaway is how i felt in real time i don't
03:55know about you out there watching listening sean mcveigh had no confidence whatsoever in his defense
04:00to get a stop going the other way the niners in this game have been 10 for 21 on third and fourth
04:07downs combined so i think mcveigh was thinking you know sure we could each theoretically have a tie i
04:13mean obviously i want the win i'd like to go for the win but if i didn't if i settled if i take the tie
04:19well what happens on the other side and i just don't think he believed in his defense the way it
04:24was going there throughout the majority of this game nevertheless we hear from mcveigh and niners
04:28coach kyle shanahan thought about maybe trying to draw them off sides i took one they took the other
04:33and uh it was a uh poor decision by me right there but uh you know you give the niners credit they made
04:40enough plays to be able to win the football game we had plenty of chances throughout this game you know
04:44we stayed in it we fought we battled um but there's a lot of things that we have to be able to clean up
04:48and a lot of football left but uh i'm pretty sick right now i'm sick of the spot that i put our group
04:53in um to end the game but um hey these are the tough beats that you got to be able to learn from
04:59and move forward and that's what we're going to do i couldn't i can't say enough about the guys they
05:02were unbelievable um we talked how long this game was going to be how focused we had to be how
05:07competitive we had to be for the entire time and started out great um but you know it's a good team
05:12they tightened it up got real tight then lost a number of dudes who we had to overcome
05:15i'm losing two d linemen in that game and the d line still like stepping it up big alfred getting
05:21that strip at the end um it was it was a huge character win we've been in tight ones all how
05:27many of we had all five of them um had a chance to pull out last week we didn't um pulled this one
05:33out and can't be more proud of the guys rams certainly could be five and oh they're three and two
05:37instead and it's the niners in front despite all the injuries leading the nfc west at four and one
05:43mlb wild card round is over we're setting up best of sevens now the red sox the very first team in the
05:49current wild card format to win the first game in the best of three and then lose the series the
05:55others 15 and oh that includes the tigers the dodgers the cubs who all advanced in the last couple
06:01of days as well more on them in a moment the yankees of course they fall to garrett crochet back in game
06:06one but then they get the best of brian bale and last night connelly early defense did not help them
06:11out the story though really boston suburb native and perhaps future yankees ace cam schlittler
06:18eight shutout innings no walks five hits a dozen strikeouts for the rookie in his first postseason
06:24start yeah i think honestly before the game started just with the bullpen i had out there um
06:29i'm just very in control of all my pitches and being able to mix that so um you know i think once i
06:33got past the you know first second inning i was able to you know really get a rhythm when you were
06:38walking off the mound the seventh inning then the eighth inning your head down into the roar of the
06:43stadium what are you saying to yourself nothing really just again like keep my head down just
06:49making sure you know i'm locked in and uh you know not getting too overaggressive with with the
06:53emotions okay dave you're on the left cam that as a boston kid do you even realize what you've done
06:59so far eight scoreless innings 12 strikeouts as a yankee against the red sox has it even sunk in
07:04with you yet no not really again i mean i'm just happy we won the game but uh again able to go out
07:08there and then uh you know get ben our shot to you know your shot to you know close it down
07:12yankees will head to toronto next beginning tomorrow the cubs they outlasted the padres three
07:20to one to advance in their rubber game to milwaukee the cubs cranked out 13 hits chase you darvish
07:26in just the second inning of that game as for the tigers we all know we've been talking about it for
07:31weeks they blew a 15 and a half game lead in the american league central to the guardians who go on
07:37to win that division obviously but the tigers get the ultimate revenge knocking them out in their house
07:43in cleveland in the playoff 6-3 the final in game three to set up a trip to seattle the tigers four
07:49runs in the seventh inning that was the difference in that game a couple of nfl notes the ravens we don't
07:56expect to see we don't know for sure but we don't expect to see lamar jackson under center against the
08:01texans this weekend those two teams one and three coming into this game vikings will continue to start
08:07carson wentz in london against the cleveland browns no j.j mccarthy chuba hubbard is out for the panthers
08:13this week against the dolphins and look like bucky irving for the buccaneers is going to miss time
08:18as well we'll be packed a whole lot on the way to start with college football on the other side

08:29while we like to break away from obviously just giving you previews and predictions and things that
08:33we expect in the upcoming games and tell you a little bit about the space and that is where we
08:37bring in our good friends from the legal sports report today it is our pal sam mcquill and who is
08:43posting a new headshot on twitter i noticed that sam underscore mcquill sam welcome back how are you
08:48pal i'm doing great adam thanks for noticing absolutely so let's uh talk a little bit about
08:55kalshi we've been talking about kalshi for a little while here as they have really started to kind of
09:01impact the space the predictive markets in a lot of different ways but now parlays are in the mix
09:07which i think is is really for one it's consumers love it and it's you know impacting a lot of people
09:14favorably in that end there is uh a uh an element of this that is not so good elsewhere though outside
09:21of kalshi and that is for some of the uh u.s sports books that saw a drop in stock prices as a result of
09:29people really flocking to this new market uh what do you make of what we've seen so far
09:33yeah it's a really interesting scenario parlays obviously if you know anything about sports betting
09:39or the u.s sports betting business at all it's what has driven the backbone of profitability for
09:44sports books like fanduel and draft kings that kind of for years were just emptying their wallets on
09:50acquiring customers and investors really wanted to see them show how they could turn a profit so
09:55they shoved these high margin bets down people's throats and they've been doing it if you open the
09:59apps you see same game parlay you know bonuses and everything's geared around getting people to bet
10:04more parlays that's what wall street wants to see is people betting more parlays because those bets are
10:10twice as profitable for sports books usually the hold is much higher for them it's just better bets for
10:16the sports books in general on top of all the extra stuff like they attract people to bet them more
10:22when you see somebody win five dollars to win a thousand it's kind of free advertising for them so
10:27this has been their crown jewel for the most part it's the reason that fanduel and draft kings are
10:31kind of in the lead and then there's everybody else because they do it better than any anybody else
10:36they have the product they have the technology in the app uh enter prediction markets which have
10:41just started to do basically a version of sports betting in 50 states including states where sports
10:46betting is illegal they haven't been able to do this so far which fanduel and draft kings executives
10:52have said you know that that makes us not worried about them we have a better product people want
10:56to do parlays it's much more profitable then flash forward to this week suddenly before monday night
11:00football all of a sudden calci which is partnered with robin hood uh unveils its same game parlay
11:06product which again it's not calling parlays it's calling a make your own combo prediction because it
11:11doesn't want to be regulated as gambling it wants to be federally regulated they did about 256 000
11:16in handle on the monday night football games with the first test of their parlay product which
11:21is is much smaller than a sports book would take on any given game i want to make sure that's clear
11:27it's not the same amount of handle it's much less money but what that did among the investing
11:33community was get everyone worried about sports books ability to offer this product or prediction
11:38markets ability to offer this product which would kind of infringe on the crown jewel that sports
11:43books have so the stocks took a massive hit draft kings fell 12 the next day flutter which owns
11:48fan duel fell 10 the next day as kind of the investment community tries to figure out okay is
11:54this a long-term threat are these prediction markets going to stay around um we don't know
11:59when legal clarity will come it doesn't seem like it will for a long time in the meantime the states
12:04tell draft kings and fan duel and every other sports book hey you can't do this because it's going
12:08to piss us off and we'll revoke your license in a state like ohio if you do it uh where we think
12:13it's illegal in california so it creates this quandary of sports books having to kind of wait on the
12:17sidelines while these prediction markets obviously only ramp up their offerings make their technology
12:22better and seemingly expand the money that they take so uh some investors believe it's actually a
12:27good opportunity to buy now because it won't last other investors think it's more of a threat so
12:32uh yeah it's caused quite a tizzy in the stock market community so far we'll see what kind of
12:37comes out of it uh in a few weeks when we have the g2e conference in las vegas where uh presumably
12:43draft kings and fan duel and everyone else will kind of dress the elephant in the room and
12:46you know we'll see if these stock hits are real and here to stay or if kind of prediction markets
12:50are you know just a temporary thing so as you said calci being a threat or perceived threat to some of
12:57these u.s mainstream sports books does calci though have a threat or some competition outside of those
13:04books because we are looking at polymarket u.s potentially could become the second federally
13:10regulated operator to offer sports predictions election predictions across all 50 states as soon
13:16as next week so what's on the horizon here yeah calci's biggest competitor has always been polymarket
13:24more globally because polymarket hasn't been able to operate in the u.s these are two platforms under
13:29these event contract prediction market spaces before they started doing sports last year it was mainly
13:34around the election economic events weather etc now that sports is a huge booming business for
13:40prediction markets in the u.s poly markets made a move to enter the u.s as you said seemingly as soon
13:45as next week is self-certified with the cftc this week to start offering money lines spreads and totals
13:53on nfl games so basically another sports betting product uh that kind of joins them on the sports space
13:58with their biggest competitor calci which does already have a leg up now that it's you know is the first to do
14:03it um offering parlays and other products but um i think what this will do mostly is kind of ramp up
14:09the pressure within the prediction market competition themselves rather than a calci versus a draft kings
14:14it's going to you know be positioned more for a calci now we have to compete against another company that
14:22can offer these prediction markets in california in texas in these huge untapped sports betting markets
14:27where sports books are just not going in right now they've you know fanduel and draft kings have made moves
14:32to eventually maybe offer sports prediction markets in those spaces but they have not gone
14:37through with them yet they're kind of waiting for legal clarity and while we wait for legal clarity
14:41more entrants that are able to come compete and offer in those states um i think calci is going to
14:46be uh it's not it's not a great sign for calci but uh i imagine i'll just ramp up kind of the
14:50competition more and more uh and just add to the the crazy chaos we have in this space right now
14:56sam we've obviously seen sports books and networks or leagues partner up for years at this point in
15:04time but i think as part of that evolution now you're seeing some net next steps for instance the
15:08streaming platform amazon prime has its new rights agreement with the nba it's an 11 year almost two
15:14billion dollar per year rights package and now the sports betting side is getting involved prime
15:20announcing uh just tuesday a couple of days ago that nba betting fans will be able to link their
15:26fan duel accounts to prime profiles directly which is i mean kind of crazy to think about having that
15:33ability it truly is all right there at your fingertips and once you're connected active wagers will appear
15:39on screen and update dynamically throughout the broadcast showing progress on parlays props straight bets
15:45all of it i mean this is next level picture and picture kind of thing to be able to watch a game
15:50and also see your bets tracked there on the side i mean is this just the beginning of where we're going
15:55yeah i would say it's the beginning of kind of the next phase um i'm we're both old enough to remember
16:01when the nba was one of the main sports leagues that argued against legalizing sports betting and now
16:08you have nba broadcasts are going to be able to watch your bet while you watch a broadcast on national
16:14television it's just crazy to think about the leap we've made from pre-2018 to now 2025 where amazon's
16:21partnering with fan duel uh importantly you can opt out of this so it's you know people who are annoyed
16:26or pissed off by having more betting being involved in sports you you don't have to see this if you don't
16:31want to you also don't have to have a fan duel account to see this stuff too maybe you're just interested
16:35in the betting integrations um as a way to follow the game more but yeah i would say this is only the start
16:41of these kinds of partnerships it's the thing that's been talked about for a while since sports
16:45betting was legalized is when we're going to have more of that integration between how we watch the
16:49game and actively betting encouraging fans to you know hey you're watching the action go on let's you
16:55know let's place a bet on it let's get you more involved that's what sports books really want at
16:59the end of the day is to foster more of that connection more of that feeling like you're in the
17:02game so you're kind of you know more prone to placing money on it as well so it'll be interesting to
17:07see how this evolves throughout the season it's the first of its kind in any league it'll be
17:11interesting to see you know if we're successful here if this goes to the nfl the mlb and just
17:16how far we're willing to go or uh media companies themselves are willing to go embracing sports books
17:22embracing the money we'll see what the returns are like for fandle if it's a worthwhile deal you know
17:26in the past we've seen other sports books shed these kinds of deals so fandle kind of going against
17:30the grain here but should be really interesting especially with you know obviously prime doing the
17:35nba for the first time ever this season uh they're obviously making betting a big component of
17:39well in that last part you mentioned that's really the thing i wonder going forward sam
