00:00The Eagles get dismantled by the New York Giants on Thursday night football by a final of 34-17.
00:07First time the Eagles have lost two in a row in approximately a year.
00:11Remember, they won the Super Bowl last year.
00:13Impressive performance from Jackson Dart, who ran up and down the field.
00:17And the same for Cam Scadaboo, who was drafted by the Giants this past offseason
00:21and scored multiple touchdowns in the games last night.
00:25Dare I say, the Giants appear to be back in the mix, at least alive for a potential playoff appearance.
00:33The home crowd also helped out and got it done.
00:36Here's Brian Dable, head coach of the Giants, on the win.
00:39Good team win.
00:41That's a division team on the road, or at home, should I say.
00:44Home crowd was awesome.
00:46But we got to give them a reason to be awesome, too.
00:49So, another good game by a rookie quarterback.
00:52But another good game from everybody around him, and that's where we need it.
00:56You know, it's not about one guy.
00:57It's about a team.
00:59Two turnovers on defense.
01:01Very good third down execution on offense.
01:05Ran the ball well.
01:06Finished the game.
01:09You know, it's good to have a young leader like Dart.
01:12Yeah, I mean, I try to talk about it in the week of just how important it is to start fast.
01:17And, you know, it's a great tone setter of the game, and especially getting the big boys rolling up front.
01:23So, you know, that's definitely really important to come out and score on that drive, you know, and then give the defense the chance to go match it.
01:32So, it was a big force.
01:34Meanwhile, on the side of the Eagles, got to pick up the pieces a little bit.
01:37They didn't score in the second half of the game.
01:39Very odd offensive performance.
01:41But, as I said yesterday here on Newswire, the Eagles are very good in one of the two halves in every football game this season.
01:48Go take a look at the stats.
01:49They either play great in the first half or great in the second half.
01:52They can't put a full game together.
01:54It's been going on now for a while.
01:56Here's Nick Sirianni on taking some time off after this and figuring things out.
02:01Nick, what was your message to the team coming at two losses in four days?
02:05What's the messaging at this point?
02:07Yeah, get up.
02:09We're going to take some time off and, you know, just get up and keep fighting.
02:16Got a lot of things to fix.
02:18Been here before.
02:19Let's go.
02:21I got to be better.
02:22Got to be better.
02:23I take ownership for it.
02:26You know, a lot of autonomy and a lot of opportunity there with the ball in my hands.
02:32And given those situations, I have to be wiser and more detailed with it.
02:39So I was looking inward first, you know, looking inward on the things that I can control.
02:44And, you know, I see a lot of opportunity in this.
02:48I give a lot of credit to how they came out of play today.
02:51They played a very, very, very, very well game and wasn't good enough on our end.
03:00Tough finish last night to the season of the Philadelphia Phillies and one that they're not going to forget anytime soon.
03:10Final score doesn't tell the story.
03:12Two to one in 11 innings.
03:13Very close game throughout.
03:15Dodgers end up loading the bases in the 11th, folks.
03:18And a soft hit right back to the pitcher.
03:22Ryan Kirkering throws it to home plate over the head and to the left of JT Real Muto.
03:31Play at the plate potentially could have had him out.
03:34Could have thrown it to first base and got an easy out.
03:37As we would say, it was a brain fart, so to speak.
03:41Unfortunately, it cost the Phillies their season.
03:43We'll hear about that in a second.
03:44But first, here's Dave Roberts on the victory.
03:46Obviously, you take the win.
03:49But what are your feelings when it comes to Ryan Kirkering right now, seeing that happen on the other side?
03:53Oh, it's brutal.
03:55Obviously, they played great defense tonight.
03:59And, you know, it's one of those things that it's a PFP, a pitcher's fielding practice.
04:04And he's done it a thousand times.
04:07And, you know, just right there, he was so focused, I'm sure, on just getting the hitter.
04:10And, you know, just sort of forgot, you know, the outs and the situation.
04:13So, you know, Kirkering is a stud.
04:16And, you know, you definitely feel for a player.
04:20And I'm obviously happy that we won.
04:22But it's just, yeah, he's had a heck of a year and is a heck of a pitcher.
04:26Do you think your players share that sympathy?
04:28You know, I don't know.
04:29I mean, I think that no one wants anyone to kind of, you know, bear that.
04:33But he's a heck of a pitcher.
04:35And, you know, for us, obviously, as Dodgers, we're happy with the result.
04:40Quality answer there, I think, from Dave Roberts for the Dodgers.
04:42Now, here's the flip side manager, Rob Thompson, on watching that unfold.
04:47Just to keep his head up.
04:49You know, he just got caught up in the moment a little bit.
04:53You know, coming down the stretch there, he pitched so well for us.
04:56And it's, you know, I feel for him because he's putting it all on his shoulders.
05:04But we win as a team and we lose as a team.
05:09I mean, to be honest with you, it's like I've talked about the last few days.
05:14You either win or lose.
05:15I don't care how it ends and who it is, what it is.
05:19It doesn't matter.
05:20At the end of the day, you win or lose.
05:22And losing sucks.
05:24It's the worst feeling that you can possibly have.
05:27So, yeah, just, you know, it sucks.
05:31And Phillies have some massive decisions to make with free agents,
05:35including Kyle Schwarber and JT Real Muto,
05:38set to become free agents in a few weeks.
05:40All right, Brewers took on the Cubs.
05:41It was a no contest at Wrigley.
05:43Chicago 6, Milwaukee nothing.
05:46They'll head back to Milwaukee for a deciding game five tomorrow night.
05:50Tigers take on the Mariners tonight.
05:53Tariq Skubal gets the shot against George Kirby.
05:56Skubal's going to be the Cy Young Award winner.
05:58And the Tigers are minus 138.
06:00And this total is five and a half tonight.
06:02Should be a very great pitching matchup,
06:05although it remains to be seen how the Mariners will fare against Skubal.
06:09They've had some good success against him in the past.
06:12Mack Jones, quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers,
06:15joins Brock Purdy on the who's going to play list this week.
06:19We have no idea who's going to play quarterback.
06:21They're both hurt.
06:22Meanwhile, Shador Sanders,
06:24not the backup quarterback initially for the Cleveland Browns,
06:27but now seems to be on the verge of playing
06:30if something would happen to Dylan Gabriel.
06:32Not that we're rooting for that,
06:33but here is Sanders who actually spoke,
06:35and we heard from him this week.
06:36Oh, well, no.
06:37We're going to make sure we do everything we can
06:38to make sure he's done and ready for the game.
06:40So, you know, whatever that means.
06:43So, each and every day,
06:44even when Joe is the start of everything,
06:46you know, to prepare the right way
06:48and be ready to know that you can get out there at any point in time.
06:51So, you know, I'm overly confident within myself.
06:55So, I know when I first got here, you know, I'm ready to play.
06:58But, you know, it's up to the coaches.
07:00You know, whatever decision, you know, they make,
07:03then I'm fine with it.
07:05And finally, Chris Jones,
07:07there was some video catching him on Monday night,
07:09just kind of watching him, you know,
07:12stroll a little bit after Trevor Lawrence,
07:14who was just, you know, running toward the end zone.
07:16Jones, one of the best defensive players in the NFL,
07:18said that he did not pursue Lawrence
07:20and called it a teaching moment for himself.
07:24Okay.
07:24Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grit.
07:26Sam McQuillan is with us to wrap up our week
07:28with Legal Sports Report,
07:30which you can read about over at LegalSportsReport.com.
07:32As we go over some of the big stories in sports betting,
07:35and one of the big ones this week
07:36seems to be, Sam,
07:37the idea that the NCAA may be ready
07:41to allow their collegiate athletes
07:43to potentially bet on professional sports.
07:45And some people may say,
07:47well, why?
07:47Why are they allowing them to do it?
07:48You know, I think that's a good question.
07:50But also, it makes me feel
07:51a little bit more comfortable, Sam,
07:53knowing that if they're going to allow this to happen,
07:56it feels like a lot of the safeguards
07:57that they have and the monitoring
07:59must be in place pretty well by now.
08:02Yeah, I think that's spot on, Craig.
08:04I think for a lot of people,
08:05especially within the NCAA,
08:07it's kind of been,
08:08it's about time we changed this rule.
08:10I think a lot of the times you have
08:11across sports betting and sports gambling now,
08:14rules that were written
08:16back when the mob was in charge of sports betting.
08:18And now you obviously have,
08:19it's a much, much different environment,
08:21still some shady characters out there.
08:23But for the NCAA,
08:24they're actually saying this is
08:25something that's going to help them
08:27identify more match-fixing scandals,
08:29more point-shaving scandals,
08:31which obviously we know
08:32has been a huge issue for them
08:34over the past year.
08:35We've talked about, you know,
08:36men's basketball teams at Fresno State.
08:38We have, of course,
08:38the Iowa baseball team
08:40and Alabama baseball team.
08:41But the NCAA says
08:43they don't have the resources
08:44to go after these, you know,
08:46small violations of a college basketball player,
08:49you know, betting $5 on the NFL.
08:52And quite frankly,
08:52it doesn't make much sense
08:53to have that rule still in place.
08:56Now, of course, you know,
08:58this isn't final yet.
08:59The Division I Advisory Council
09:02voted to change this rule,
09:05but it still has to be approved
09:06by the D2 Council,
09:07the D3 Council,
09:08which is expected to happen
09:10later this month.
09:11And if that does happen,
09:12it'll take effect November 1st.
09:14But again, they say
09:16it's going to allow them
09:16to, you know,
09:18leverage their resources
09:19more on kind of where
09:20the real problems are
09:22with sports betting
09:22or the real issues
09:23are with sports betting.
09:24And I think for college athletes,
09:26it's just, you know,
09:27it makes it a little easier
09:28and more comfortable
09:29to think about sports betting
09:31because, you know,
09:32if you're on the,
09:33you know, the Penn State football team,
09:34for example,
09:35and you're told you can't bet
09:36on the NFL,
09:36it's kind of just, okay,
09:37sports betting is taboo
09:39and stay away from it.
09:39So I think it's good
09:40that we're changing
09:41and adapting these rules,
09:42of course,
09:42but at the same time,
09:44the NCAA is definitely
09:45not endorsing,
09:46hey, go bet on these games.
09:47It's more, hey,
09:48let's, you know,
09:49have it where you're comfortable
09:49doing it,
09:50doing it responsibly,
09:51of course, all those things.
09:52But yeah,
09:53just another one of these rules
09:54that kind of takes a long time
09:56to fix.
09:56We have 39 states
09:57with legal sports betting now.
09:59So, you know,
10:00it moves slowly but surely,
10:01but still moving.
10:03Yeah.
10:04Let's get to the results
10:05of college and pro football
10:07in the month of September.
10:08But I want to throw
10:10a little caveat out here, Sam,
10:11because we're going to talk
10:13about the fact that September
10:15looked a lot like last season
10:18in the NFL
10:19and a little bit
10:19like college football.
10:20But Sam, as you know,
10:21if you've been following,
10:22I'm sure you have
10:23in the month of October.
10:25Sportsbooks are going to do
10:26very, very well this month.
10:28The results have been
10:29completely upside down
10:31in the National Football League.
10:33And by the way,
10:34especially in these
10:35primetime games,
10:36a lot of the underdogs
10:37winning outright.
10:39Yeah, you're spot on, Craig.
10:41October is off
10:42to a much, much better start
10:43than September was
10:45for the sportsbooks.
10:45I think you had
10:46three underdogs
10:48of a touchdown or more
10:49won outright last week,
10:50which was like the first time
10:51that's happened
10:52in the past decade,
10:54something like that.
10:55So it's obviously
10:56always good for the sportsbooks
10:58when underdogs win
10:59because what that does
11:00is it knocks out
11:01a lot of the money
11:02they have tied up
11:03on these, you know,
11:04favorite money line parlays
11:05where most casual bettors
11:07are just, you know,
11:08picking the big favorites
11:09to win
11:09and trying to tease them down
11:11to get a better price.
11:12So that helps there,
11:13but that comes after
11:14it was, you know,
11:15a really bad start
11:16to the football season
11:17for them.
11:17I think teams favored
11:19by a touchdown
11:20or more were 16
11:22and two and one
11:24straight up
11:25through September.
11:26So getting to what
11:27you're talking about,
11:27a bad start to the month
11:28for them,
11:29which continued to streak
11:31of last year
11:31when those teams actually
11:32have won 90%
11:34of their games
11:34since week 13 last year.
11:36And obviously we know
11:37just how bad
11:38last NFL season was
11:40for the sportsbooks.
11:41It was really unprecedented.
11:42They've told investors,
11:43no, this is kind of
11:44a crazy thing
11:45that just happened.
11:46And things happen sometimes.
11:48And this was the first time
11:49this has ever happened to us.
11:50But the fact that it was
11:51continuing to start
11:52in September
11:52was definitely not a narrative
11:54the sportsbooks
11:55wanted to keep going.
11:56It's going to actually
11:57impact the companies,
11:58though,
11:58because they have
11:59their third quarter
12:00earnings coming up next.
12:01You got one
12:02Wall Street analyst
12:03estimating that
12:04the bad results
12:05in September
12:06cost Caesars
12:07about $39 million
12:08more than
12:10they normally would
12:11on sports,
12:12cutting their profits
12:13in half
12:14for the third quarter.
12:15So they're still
12:17feeling it.
12:17But eventually,
12:18you know,
12:19they're sportsbooks.
12:20They're the house
12:21for the reason.
12:22They're going to stay
12:22in the game.
12:23They're going to hope
12:23their luck turns around,
12:24which obviously so far
12:25it seems like it is
12:26in October.
12:28You know,
12:28you have the Giants,
12:29you know,
12:29win outright last night
12:31against the Eagles
12:32as big underdogs as well.
12:34So you are starting
12:34to see that trend
12:35normalize a bit,
12:36but you never know
12:37in the NFL.
12:38It's week to week.
12:39Anything could change.
12:40But yeah,
12:41so far the sportsbooks
12:42enjoying a much better
12:43start to October
12:44than September,
12:45which was kind of
12:46just a continuance
12:47of a terrible last season.
12:49I saw on social media
12:50you posted earlier today
12:52that Calci is getting
12:53some backing financially
12:54from investors,
12:56but I don't know
12:57if that's the right play
12:58at this point
12:59because at some point
13:01this year,
13:03next year,
13:04states are going to
13:05ask for Calci
13:07to be taxed.
13:08And I think they're going
13:09to have to pay taxes
13:10if they continue
13:12to operate in this space.
13:13Specifically,
13:14the state of Pennsylvania
13:15is looking and saying,
13:17hey, our sportsbooks
13:18are paying us tax money
13:20every month
13:20to do the same thing
13:21you guys are doing.
13:24Yeah, add Pennsylvania
13:25to that growing number
13:26of states,
13:27which is not only
13:28telling Calci to leave,
13:29which Calci has responded
13:30with lawsuits saying,
13:31no, we're not going to leave
13:32because we don't think
13:33that what you're talking about,
13:35us being an unlicensed
13:36sportsbook is accurate.
13:37But now Pennsylvania
13:38wrote a letter this week
13:39asking Congress to intervene,
13:41which if you know
13:42anything about Congress,
13:43they don't really like
13:43to get involved
13:44in the state issues.
13:45That's one of the reasons
13:46that sports betting
13:46was left up to the states
13:48in the first place.
13:49Congress really has,
13:50they don't do much
13:51around gambling usually
13:52because it's, again,
13:54left up to the states
13:55and the tribes
13:55for the most part.
13:56So the fact that
13:57a major gaming state
13:58in Pennsylvania,
13:59it's always top five
14:00and handle
14:00and it's really big market,
14:02obviously,
14:03they're urging Congress
14:04to do something
14:04because the CFTC,
14:06the government agency,
14:08which is supposed
14:08to oversee Calci
14:09and these prediction markets
14:10and kind of make sure
14:12that they're not offering things
14:12they're not supposed
14:13to be doing,
14:14they haven't stepped in so far.
14:15They've kind of just been,
14:16you know,
14:17hands off.
14:17They're going to continue
14:18to operate.
14:19The lawsuits are playing out
14:20to your point,
14:20Craig,
14:21where eventually
14:21some point you think
14:22that it might,
14:23you know,
14:24get these companies
14:25to actually pay money
14:26and follow these rules,
14:27but lawsuits take a long time.
14:29So in the meantime,
14:30I think states
14:31are going to try
14:31everything they can
14:32to not just use their power,
14:34but to leverage
14:35any voice they have
14:36with other people
14:37who make decisions
14:38like a Congress.
14:40You've seen other states
14:41send cease and desist orders.
14:42You've seen Michigan
14:43just this week as well
14:44issued a letter
14:45to operators saying
14:47if you partner
14:47with a Calci,
14:48if you partner
14:49with a Robin Hood
14:49to do a prediction market,
14:50it might cost you
14:51your betting license
14:52in Michigan,
14:53which again
14:53is a huge kind of dilemma
14:55for sportsbooks
14:56that want to get in
14:57on this action,
14:58want to be able
14:58to offer these things
14:59without taxes.
15:00I'm sure,
15:01you know,
15:01if they had their way,
15:01they would never pay
15:02any taxes,
15:02but obviously
15:03there's a reason
15:04we regulate things,
15:05but while they wait
15:07for these decisions
15:08to play out,
15:09you just have,
15:10you have these prediction markets
15:12just taking money
15:13in the meantime
15:13and to your point,
15:15the $5 billion valuation
15:17for Calci,
15:17which was just announced today
15:18is only a reflection
15:19of how I believe
15:20Wall Street
15:21and the market thinks
15:22that this is a huge opportunity
15:23for us right now
15:24regardless of regulation
15:26when it may come
15:27down the line,
15:28who knows when
15:29that's going to happen.
15:30Yeah,
15:31so it's just so fascinating
15:32to me, Sam,
15:33because I do believe
15:36even though
15:37we're dancing
15:38around the subject,
15:39which is I think
15:40we both agree
15:40that this is some form
15:41of sports betting.
15:42I think we both agree
15:43with that,
15:44but the fact
15:45that people
15:46are willing
15:47to put their own money
15:49into this
15:49to make the investment
15:50and potentially risk
15:52losing money
15:53leads me to believe
15:56that there's going
15:56to be some form
15:57of success
15:58potentially
15:59with these companies,
16:00either that
16:00or just a lot of people
16:01have money to burn
16:02if it doesn't work out.
16:03That's the thing
16:04that just has me
16:05a little bit wondering
16:06how it's going to end.
16:08Right.
16:09Again,
16:09the safeguards
16:10you're talking about,
16:11which is stuff that
16:11that's the reason
16:12we have state regulators
16:13that monitor
16:14and work with sportsbooks
16:15is the reason
16:16you have licenses.
16:17Those don't exist
16:18for these companies
16:18like Kalshi right now,
16:19very similar
16:20to offshore sportsbooks,
16:22although I think
16:22the difference
16:23in this scenario
16:25is that they have
16:26the backing
16:26of these financial institutions.
16:28They have the backing
16:28of a Robinhood,
16:29the legitimacy
16:30of a crypto.com
16:31versus something
16:32that's completely
16:33ruled illegal
16:34and offshore.
16:35And so far,
16:36it's continuing to grow.
16:37So I guess people
16:38are definitely interested
16:39in it.
16:40Yeah, agreed.
16:41All right, Sam,
16:41great to catch up.
16:42Have a great weekend.
16:43Enjoy all the sports
16:44and we'll see you next week.
16:46Thanks.
16:46You too, Craig.
