00:00Before we get to some baseball and some hoops let's talk some NFL some rule changes in play
00:04seems like they're walking back some of those kicking changes that they made from a year ago
00:09although not that significant competition committee has decided to permit the kicking
00:13team to declare an onside kick at any time during the game so that's a change from basically being
00:19more specific throughout the game last year also the competition committee has eliminated the
00:23kicking team's incentive to kick off and kick the ball out of bounds when kicking from the 50 yard
00:28line also modifying the kickoff alignment requiring the receiving teams to be played in that zone
00:34remember they used to show that graphic on the screen so you can find more about this online
00:39naturally but essentially kicking still going to be altered in the new way and age of the NFL but
00:44not significantly maybe the biggest news to come out of this by the way folks for those of you who
00:48have not been aware as of right now the NFL and the referees have no agreement for the upcoming season
00:54and so part of this new agreement in this new CBA or rules changes etc is the fact that the
01:01NFL has
01:02decided that if they use replacement refs they can take a closer look at some of the plays during the
01:07game just to make sure the integrity of the game is kept which I think is a really good idea
01:11but
01:11hopefully they come to an agreement with the referees coming up this summer although there's no
01:14agreement right now and here we are a couple of months away from OTA's draft next month okay Tiger
01:19Woods you know what happened to him over the weekend by now I'm sure if you follow sports at all
01:23had a DUI over the weekend he is stepping away from golf so that means no Masters no U.S.
01:28Open or
01:28anything else he says I know and understand the seriousness of my situation and that rollover that
01:32he had I find myself in today also said he's going to enter into some health treatment and focus on
01:41that in the future and take time away from the game and ask for privacy from his family so don't
01:46expect to see Tiger Woods TGL U.S. Open Masters anything anytime soon just get healthy Tiger
01:53Woods hopefully we'll see him back on the course next year okay let's get to the NBA last night
01:57congratulations Detroit Pistons what a season they have they clinched their first division title folks
02:0118 years it's been since the Detroit Pistons clinched the title tell Richard Hamilton that
02:07Jalen Duren had 31 points and 9 rebounds uh Dennis Jenkins had 21 points and so uh it's been a
02:15really
02:15long road for Detroit to get them back to this point probably got to give them some credit and they
02:19did
02:19it without Cade Cunningham the last couple of weeks here's Jenkins on winning the central division
02:23title for the first time in almost two decades yeah this is the first time that Pistons have won a
02:29central division title since 2008 what does that mean to you guys to be able to you know add your
02:33name
02:33in history like that yeah man I think um like I said man we we knew we were trying to
02:37do something
02:38special um since the summer since this group since this core group has been together even last year I mean
02:44we was just working you know I mean just grinding just scratching stuff off our list you know what
02:50I mean like it's it's great to accomplish things like that but we obviously got our eyes on the
02:55playoffs and want to do some damage in there so it's good we'll celebrate it tonight but uh you know
03:00we back to work tomorrow Los Angeles Lakers normally playing in the play-in game at this stage of LeBron
03:08James's career guess what they moved out of that last night Luka Doncic had 42 points
03:12and the Lakers win and cover as two and a half point favorites so that means they're a top
03:17six seed in the Western Conference playoffs the Suns lost to the Magic so that's the reason why
03:21Luka had 42 points in his return to the court and certainly the team seems to be coming together at
03:27the right time or at least that's what Luka said after the game have you seen I guess as the
03:31biggest
03:32factor in how this team has really formed over the last three four or five weeks I mean yeah
03:38definitely it just can't be uh some guys because it's some guys play good and you know the rest
03:44don't we don't win games so everybody I think the players playing great uh everybody the staff on the
03:49floor you know give uh 100 percent and we play for each other out there signature win for the Houston
03:55Rockets as they close out the month of March with a win against the New York Knicks 111-94 they
04:00were
04:00slight home dogs Kevin Durant had 27 points Amen Thompson had 17 so Houston needs a few wins here
04:08before the playoffs begin and they got it here's Kevin Durant on getting in rhythm
04:12I think we've been on the same page I think it's not a rhythm like you bet on the big
04:20house on the same page from the beginning
04:23our games always come down to knocking down shots I think defensively we don't want to strengthen I think we
04:29make the right plays
04:31um turnovers could be better throughout the season but I think we knock down shots that just focuses up our
04:36whole game
04:37and I think a lot of times um when we struggle was because we we generate good shots we not
04:42necessarily knock them down
04:44um but tonight we started off shooting confidence sorry it was incredible to start the game where he came out
04:50with energy
04:51I just think the energy effort and togetherness was there from beginning and we fed off it throughout the whole
04:57game
04:57we just didn't start off that way we had plenty of games this year we started off great
05:02and then let the team get back to the game easily and um they got back into it but we
05:07stayed poor in that second quarter
05:08I was able to push the lead up cut to 10 we just kept pushing the lead up we didn't
05:13let them get over the home
05:13I think there was a see see if Durant and company have a run in them out west all right
05:18meanwhile if there was a team in the
05:20NBA that needed a win last night it was the Orlando Magic and they got it they beat the Suns
05:24115 to 111 as they cover as two and a half point home favorites Desmond Bain 21 points Jalen Suggs
05:3320
05:33points but the Magic right now just looking for anything positive before the playoffs begin
05:37here's Jamal Mosley on the victory and building that momentum in April can a game like this and
05:43especially the way that that you guys won in the fourth quarter can can that be something that you
05:47can build off of and and move into tomorrow and gain some confidence from moving into tomorrow
05:51but we know what what we are capable of doing and I think that says a lot and what we
05:55were asking
05:56more for these guys was was a response how do you respond and that and they responded the right way
06:01and that's the beauty of this team that's the toughness of this team that's the resiliency of
06:05this team we started the game the right way I'm gonna say it again and we ended the game the
06:09right way
06:09we got to clean up the in-between yeah tremendous fight like super physical game felt like a playoff game
06:15knew they would be desperate um coming off the road and you know probably not a great response
06:22by us early uh we weren't able to match their physicality their intensity early um then as the
06:27game wore on especially in that third quarter great response coming out of halftime down 14 tied up going
06:31in the fourth um anyone's game down the stretch um you know just a hard fought game second I have
06:37a
06:37back-to-back flying got here late guys performed at a high level um you know we'll take a lot
06:44from
06:44this game also in the NBA last night as we close it out the Hornets beat the Nets 117 to
06:5086 they were
06:5118 and a half point favorites the Hornets because the Nets are just playing toward next year and the
06:55Hornets are getting ready for the playoffs maybe they have a run of them they've had a really nice
06:59season all right the pitching debut last night in case you missed it Shohei Ohtani was near perfect
07:05on the mound and they did let him go six innings pitched one hit no one runs three walks six
07:11strikeouts 87 pitches Dodgers win four to one Max Muncy also had a home run in the game and as
07:18I
07:18suspected with uh Kevin when I was on with him last night it seems like Ohtani feels a lot more
07:23comfortable on the mound this year than he did last in what way do you feel like you're better
07:29last year um last year I felt good but this year I I do feel a lot more loose and
07:34easy uh pitching
07:35overall and uh you know looking back at today's outing specifically that wasn't necessarily the
07:41case so that's something I want to work on but compared to last season I do feel a lot a
07:46lot loose
07:46and easy all right Ohtani back on the mound looking good also a rookie named Jose Fernandez on
07:53the Diamondbacks hit two home runs in his debut last night they beat the Tigers seven to five
07:58Corbin Carroll also went one for three drove in two runs the A's finally win a game as road dogs
08:02they beat the Braves five to two Phillies beat the Nationals three to two thanks to Andrew Painter's
08:07debut eight strikeouts five and a third Shane McClanahan returned to the mound for the first time
08:11in two years but he lost to the Milwaukee Brewers six to two Gary Sanchez Jake Bowers both hit home
08:17runs also one note from the upcoming World Cup in June believe it or not no Italy out again
08:22as they end up losing to Bosnia in a penalty shootout all right welcome back to Newswire we
08:29got Sam McQuillan in the house from Legal Sports Report you can read all about everything going on
08:34in the prediction markets and sports betting world over at LegalSportsReport.com Sam joins us
08:38usually three days a week to discuss all these hot topics and Sam is back with us today so Sam
08:44let's
08:44get started uh the National Football League who has been very adverse to dealing with prediction
08:49markets in fact they're probably going to end up being the lone league that has no affiliation
08:54whatsoever because they don't need their money so to speak uh is asking the prediction markets very
09:00specifically Calci Poly market to take a couple of their predictions off the market involving uh
09:08different kind of outcomes which is like individual based not action based so tell us more exactly
09:14what they want removed and why they want it removed
09:20yeah Craig the NFL sent letters to Calci and Poly market which are the two leading prediction markets
09:26in the U.S. uh this past Sunday urging them to stop offering these uh certain sports related contracts
09:33it believes are could be a special especially especially ripe for uh manipulation sorry tongue twister
09:40there uh these are markets like uh what is someone on the broadcast going to say during the game which
09:46you can bet on these are called mentioned markets uh you know which could be anything like Tom Brady
09:51saying oh I think that um they're going to run an RPO here how many times is he going to
09:56say RPO
09:57something like that uh is a celebrity going to be at the game you can bet on as well there
10:01was a lot
10:02of money wagered on that uh during the Super Bowl when uh Mark Wahlberg uh there was some contention
10:08about whether he actually did appear or not appear and how they could settle the markets
10:11and then other markets like you know who's going to be taken at what point in the draft which
10:16are things that some sports books offer in certain states certainly some states don't allow sports
10:21books to offer them because of the way their laws are written designed for this very thing where
10:25you're thinking about insider information that potentially a team somebody around the team
10:30personnel might have other markets like coach firings officiating decisions which I haven't really
10:36seen any of these officiating decisions or injury markets uh popped up on call sheer poly markets so
10:42far but it is notable that the league is kind of including these in all these markets uh specifically
10:47uh NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller talked about the league just wanted to stay away from
10:53uh inside information wagers all these kind of markets which they made a point in their letter these
10:59are all guardrails that sports books have currently there are no real guardrails that prevent this
11:05on the prediction market space because it's federally regulated by the CFTC available on 50 states
11:11which again is something that a lot of law states are challenging in their own lawsuit so this is
11:16just kind of the NFL raising the issue once again saying hey we really need to figure this out
11:21we're kind of worried about this the CFTC meanwhile is working on rules it's collecting comments so
11:27I would imagine that this the letter the NFL sent these companies is going to get put into those
11:33comments and go into the rulemaking process right here but you brought up a point Craig about how the
11:37NFL is in a unique position you know they're obviously the biggest league they have more uh kind of
11:43bargaining power here with how much they can see their prediction markets I don't think it's any
11:47any coincidence that the first league we saw really uh get in bed with prediction markets so to speak
11:53was the NHL which out of the four leagues is by the least popular and then recently had major league
11:58baseball uh going even farther with beyond the partnership they had with these prediction markets
12:03and uh signing a memorandum of agreement with the CFTC which we've never seen a federal agency that
12:09oversees you know financial exchanges and you know a financial investing partner with a sports league on
12:16this front so certainly a lot of other leagues are kind of embracing it notably the NFL the biggest most
12:22powerful league really kind of saying you know maybe let's hedge our bets here and say we need
12:27more guardrails we want to protect integrity definitely at a time when integrity is is really a big issue
12:31in sports and of course you do have the NCAA who has been just kind of banging their chest like
12:36this is
12:37really problematic this is really could be an issue we don't want to have to find out more of these
12:42cases where you know people are sharing this inside information uh but right now the the attitude from the
12:47CFTC and college and polymarket is you know we're trying our best we're just gonna keep policing so
12:52uh we'll see if this leads to any kind of concrete rules from the CFTC or uh if college and
12:58polymarket
12:59respond in some way but not a huge bit of news but definitely some positioning for the NFL right here
13:04as prediction markets continue to grow all right let's go over some financial numbers while we have
13:09you here Sam on the show was a very big deal Missouri got sports betting uh last year made their
13:13debut
13:14got off to a really strong start uh but financially I'm seeing the numbers dip quite a bit I'm not
13:19really sure what to correlate this to because it's a unique situation because generally all the markets
13:25when sports betting has become legal has been a really bullish run for about six months I mean
13:30I mean it can't be all just associated with the Kansas City Chiefs not being in the playoffs or not
13:36having a good year maybe that's part of it but it can't be a huge part of it why is
13:39the state of
13:40Missouri not doing as well as some of the others when they opened up sports betting
13:46yeah important to note with Missouri it's important not just for people in Missouri but it's important
13:52because it's the only state we really had legalize and launch sports betting uh this past year so it's
13:57really only our you know latest bit of evidence as to how a new market might look what the trends
14:03are
14:04in the overall industry and obviously a lot has been made about how she and polymarket you know
14:09supposedly cannibalizing some of sports betting eating into that that's not what the case is here
14:14actually Missouri was off to a really good start in December football season obviously was great it's
14:19slowed down in terms of actual uh betting since then it's down about 50 since launch it's one of the
14:26sharpest slowdowns we've seen in overall betting obviously February is a shorter month there's less days in
14:31it there's no football season uh but it is a little bit of uh more of a concern when you
14:36look at the
14:37revenue uh that they made in the state as well the operators took about 188 million dollars in revenue
14:43total uh since launch but only about two million dollars of that has gone to taxes because what what they
14:50did was just flood the market with a ton of promotions at the start they were very smart to get
14:57this written
14:57the law where you can write off all of the promos you give to people in the state to try
15:02to grow sports betting
15:03when it launches you can write that all off in Missouri from your taxable revenue so it really
15:07reduced the taxes they paid in the state to like really nothing which is could be a huge issue going
15:12forward but the betting has dropped off and the total taxable revenue you get in Missouri as well
15:18has dropped off so it's definitely concerning as we round the calendar I mean we'll get a look at these
15:22March figures uh in a couple weeks now I would imagine March badness would have attracted a lot more
15:27activity but not great when you talk about a new state in Missouri really just kind of tapering off
15:33and it seems to be because they had so many promos to start and that's not only translating to less
15:38revenue for the operators it's really hurting the state in terms of tax revenue one thing I will note
15:42um is that Missouri is one of those states that breaks out uh the betting and the handle by bet
15:48types
15:48and 37 percent of all the money bet in Missouri was tied up in a parlay somehow so it should
15:53go to show
15:54you how important parlays are but while 37 percent of all the money wagered it was also 70 percent of
16:00all the
16:00revenue so operators made it I don't know twice as much uh from the amount that so another interesting
16:06portion here but yeah we'll see if Missouri gets back on track here it's been a pretty pretty strange
16:10story to start the year all right Sam let's wrap it up with the state of New York trying to
16:15propose
16:15some biometrics to make sure that kids who are underage are not placing bets illegally and watching
16:23certain deposit numbers as well this is not a novel idea it's just an idea that we're seeing if they
16:30can
16:30actually implement correct correct this is an idea actually proposed by governor Kathy Hochul of New
16:37York who is concerned like every big lawmaker seems to be right now about betting specifically underage
16:43betting so what she's asked the New York Gaming Commission to do is create these new rules where
16:49you have stronger safeguards you know it's harder to get into account where you have to you know give
16:54a thumbprint to get in as opposed to a password as opposed to all these you know login connections
16:59that you have and also institute some more rules that would automatically trigger problem gambling
17:05safeguards for people like when someone deposits over ten thousand dollars in 24 hours automatically
17:11put them on a list when someone has visited the problem gambling page five times in one day
17:16automatically put them on a list so it's some more of these responsible safeguards that would be
17:20triggered by people's actions which I actually think is a good thing here whether or not the industry
17:25actually lets that happen and it passes is another thing we'll have to see but it is encouraging so
17:30far to see a state like New York coming back to the drawing board with at least some sensible measures
17:34to address some of these really big issues in the space right now great stuff as always Sam we'll
17:39catch you later in the week thanks for coming on Newswire
17:41thanks Greg
