00:00last night the nfl made its debut a lot of drama at the beginning of the game a player thrown out
00:05for spitting on another player early on as jalen carter the eagles got the season started in the
00:11wrong way and the game ended with a little bit of a thud the first half of the game incredible
00:16between the cowboys and eagles in fact there was 41 first half points but then the rain delay
00:23happened and a lightning delay happened and then not much more happened in that game 24 to 20 the
00:27final so the cowboys cover the eight and a half the total goes under imagine betting the over on that
00:32one and getting all those points in the first half and then getting virtually nothing in the second
00:37half nice game for jalen hurts as well scored a couple of touchdowns on the dallas side javante
00:43williams scored a couple touchdowns for them really good scene on opening night uh but nick
00:47seriani basically said it felt like two games were being played one offensive game in the first half
00:52and one defensive game in the second man i mean the first half right um i think what you saw
00:58first half we three possessions three touchdowns so obviously a really good start can't start much
01:04better than that i thought he i thought he called it really well again the communication kevin and i
01:09have been together long enough uh and through all these things where the communication was great we did
01:15what i wanted us to do in certain situations you know in game management situations as far as run pass or
01:21set up or whatever that is you know kevin's calling it but obviously we talked through a lot of those
01:26things and we were on the same page there and i thought he did a good job uh you know i think both
01:31offenses struggled a little bit coming off the the long break and the defenses kind of stepped up and
01:37on both sides of the football there wasn't any scoring uh after four i think it was 444 left on the clock
01:43when they when the clock stopped um so you know we'll go back and look at that but you know i think
01:49i think kevin did a really nice job of you know calling the game uh the way the game needed to be
01:55called today uh but again you have to go back and look at the tape and reevaluate everything but
02:00i i got a lot of confidence in kevin and the and the job that he that he does
02:05there was a long lightning delay approximately an hour because of the weather in philadelphia
02:11may have also changed the fortunes of the dallas cowboys who got off to such a good start but head
02:15coach brian schottenheimer said that was all for not in the second half yeah it was really calvin a
02:21tale of two halves you know i talked to the guys about that in the locker room you know we came out
02:25on fire on offense in the first half and defensively we struggled a little bit and then i thought we
02:30made some great defensive adjustments in the second half and we flipped it we gave ourselves a chance to
02:35win and um offensively didn't you know really do enough we put ourselves a more third down the longs
02:40um and uh just weren't able to capitalize but that's how a division game should feel man you
02:45know we had good moments they had good moments they do what they do you know they they bleed the
02:49clock on you and they limit your opportunities i think they had the ball for almost 35 minutes and
02:54um you know we uh we got to make make plays when they're there you know we got to get guys on the
03:00ground and things like that uh throw and catch a little bit better and um we had our chances
03:05i don't worry about cd lamb cd's gonna be fine what a great player um again you know this was a
03:17this was a team defeat and uh we uh own that you know we understand where we can go as a football
03:23team we understand i love the competition i thought guys competed their butts off i thought that was
03:27great but we're all about winning and we didn't win tonight and so therefore it's not good enough
03:31and lamb as he referred to dropped a couple of passes at the end of the game could have
03:36potentially led to a win tonight a game in brazil of the nfl exclusive to youtube if you have youtube
03:44which you should it's completely free the chiefs are three point favorites against the chargers the
03:49total is 46 and a half in this game they kick off this evening eight o'clock eastern in brazil
03:55there have been some field issues by the way on this stadium in the past not sure if that's going to
04:00be the case tonight weather's supposed to be good but naturally andy reed was asked about the
04:06conditions and whether or not they will be completely playable going into the game yeah i know i know
04:12the league has uh spent time on the field so field conditions was a question um i know that uh the league
04:19has spent time working on that they were aware of it last year and so uh i think it'll be ripping
04:25and ready to go but you know what whatever it is both teams are playing on it and we roll
04:30um like i said uh to be in this game you know this this uh this second game of the nfl season
04:38friday night game uh you know big stage uh there's an honor there uh to be uh selected to play in this game
04:47and that really over overshoots any uh you know the home home game aspect of it but uh but you know
04:58at its core it's this is a big game to us this is uh this is huge you want to start off your season on
05:04the um you know the right foot and uh that's what we uh we prepared ourselves we've been working
05:11very very hard uh for this game and we're ready to have that uh you know pay off with a great
05:17performance on friday night jim harbaugh's former team that he coached the san francisco 49ers will
05:23open up against the seattle seahawks on sunday will they have christian mccaffrey we'll probably find
05:28that out later today mccaffrey was held out of practice yesterday with a calf issue no word on what
05:33or exactly what this is but of course kyle shanahan will have to talk about this later today
05:39michael parsons ramping up says it's basically the packers call as to whether or not he plays
05:44sunday against the lions and a bit of a surprise in the nfl yesterday amari cooper who signed less
05:49than a month ago with the las vegas raiders has decided to retire apparently either doesn't feel
05:54good or doesn't like what he's seeing amari cooper 10 000 receiving yards over the course of his career
05:59and 64 touchdowns meanwhile in college football more changes coming to the transfer portal in college
06:05football after the ncaa fbs oversight committee voted on thursday to move the january transfer
06:10window and eliminate the spring window so this is a shorter period of time that players can actually
06:15transfer which is what colleges want they want to know if kids are going to stay or go and they'll
06:20vote on this sometime before october 1st to shorten the transfer portal meanwhile there are reports in
06:26north carolina that bill belichick the head coach of the tar heels is not willing to allow his former
06:32team the new england patriots to scout their players going into the nfl draft uh kind of wild
06:39north carolina has declined comment but it does seem like that's the only team his former team that he
06:44won't allow bill's quarterback josh allen has his college jersey retired at wyoming and there are
06:49games tonight including eastern washington at boise state northern illinois at maryland and james
06:55madison louisville yes the schedule's not fantastic it's much better tomorrow as far as the major league
07:00baseball slate last night was concerned the big hitter for the new york yankees this season that's
07:05come as a surprise to most has to be trent grisham he hit his 30th home run last night and the yankees
07:10beat the astros by a final of eight to four the rays take care of the guardians four to two they've now won
07:15seven games in a row and all of a sudden the rays are back in the playoff mix royals hit four home runs
07:21bobby witt hit a home run in the eighth inning and they swept the angels four to three the pirates have
07:26their biggest series win of the season the last few days they swept the dodgers paul skein six
07:32innings pitch no one runs as he is down to 1.98 ranger suarez six shutout innings the phillies beat
07:39the brewers two to nothing freddie peralta also pitched very well and the white offense have come
07:45alive since the all-star break they scored 11 more runs yesterday and they swept the twins so the white
07:50socks not the worst team in all of baseball season that's an accomplishment in its own all right sam
07:56mcquillan's ready for a big weekend of college and pro football before we get to that let's get back
08:00to the latest in sports wagering and some news as well by the way you can read about all of the
08:03stories that we discuss over at legalsportsreport.com great to have you back here sam on the show here
08:07on this friday as we close out the week let's get started and talk about the cftc ruling that poly
08:12market is now back in the united states i know that's not going to be ready for the weekend and also
08:18probably a quick synopsis as to what poly market is what i'm sure help our viewers and listeners
08:22yeah of course poly market is the latest uh prediction market that's going to launch the
08:27sports platform just in time for nfl season they got a letter from the cftc uh this week that cleared
08:34them to launch uh they actually have been a company that's been around um you know the the globe
08:39internationally taking sports prediction wagers uh this is of course the mechanism that looks a lot
08:45like gambling but these companies are calling it a prediction market service and say it's you know
08:51commodities trading and contracts trading so it falls under federal oversight instead of state
08:55laws so it's allowed these companies to you know have these uh you know now nfl spreads in all 50
09:00states and there's a big fight going on with that but poly market has kind of been in the background
09:05uh while this is going in in the u.s uh they've been out of the u.s since 2022 they got kicked out for
09:11taking uh unregistered contracts on the election at the time this was before a court ruling that said that
09:17no that's actually okay so they had to pay a fine and stay out of the u.s but now they have acquired a
09:22florida-based exchange called qxc so after acquiring that exchange and after getting the
09:29screen light from the cftc they can now uh you know essentially take nfl spreads nfl bets maybe even
09:34player props and other sports bets uh in the united states in all 50 states uh for the foreseeable
09:40future so we're gonna have our ear to the ground to see when they actually do end up launching they
09:44can launch as soon as today uh they might not get ahead for the weekend though i'm not sure how
09:48quickly they'll be able to get everything up and running but um they're a big rival of calci they
09:52just got valued at a billion dollars a couple months ago so that was kind of the breadcrumbs that
09:57you know maybe they're going to enter the u.s market again if they're getting valued so high calci's
10:02valued valued at two billion and the sides are very much kind of rivals with each other and they've
10:07been rivals overseas but now that they're in the u.s doing sports uh it's going to kind of turn up the
10:11heat a little bit more um you know how they can out compete each other so really interesting to
10:15see what polymarket does uh what the product actually ultimately looks like and then of course
10:20what states and courts ultimately decide or say on the matter will be something that we have to decide
10:26or see about on a later date but it certainly is quite a messy space right now yeah no it's uh this
10:31prediction market stuff is kind of crazy to see now just point spreads being up on on some of these
10:36sites as you pointed out on social media earlier today uh all right so uh maybe the prediction
10:41markets jumping in in in the back door will open up to somebody else competing in the future against
10:47draft kings and fanduel but sam and it just appears as though for now there's really not much to talk
10:52about these two companies are dominating the space and dominating stocks and for whatever you know espn bet
10:58is trying to be or some of these other companies they're gonna have to fight their way over fanduel and
11:02draft kings yeah draft kings and fanduel have combined now for 70 of the market for a long time
11:08and that number keeps going up every football season uh this football season investors are calling
11:13especially critical not just for those two companies but to your point craig if anybody else is able to
11:18make a dent it'll have to happen now espn has had about three percent market share their goal is to get
11:24to 10 by next year so if they can't make a big push this year and really see a lot of the new features
11:29that they put on their apps a lot of the integrations with espn fantasy products with espn you know
11:34flagship products across the board if those don't pay off soon this football season uh it might be
11:39curtains for them they do have an opt-out clause so that would only leave the space you know more
11:44dominated by fanduel draft kings that mgm is of course also in the race but they've been more focused
11:49on i-gaming lately and have kind of ceded some ground to fanduel and draft kings but the big question
11:55here this football season just for the industry overall is going to be looking at handle growth
11:59uh there's about 13 billion dollars that is expected to be bet on the nfl this season which
12:04is obviously more than last year you have another state turning on as well but the rate at which
12:08handle is growing has definitely slowed down over the past couple years it went from it was about 15
12:14to 30 growth every year and this year so far it's about eight to nine percent growth so i think
12:19investors are going to be really keen to see if these sports books are able to take more money now again
12:24that's not exactly how you measure how well they do they also have margins they have hold rates
12:28they have uh the revenue that they make is much more important but if people are betting less or
12:33not betting as much at an increased rate that definitely is a concern of wall street so they
12:38want to see if you know shoving parlays down everyone's throat uh whether that's actually making
12:42people bet less money like betting five dollars as opposed to you know a bigger bet you upon a spread
12:48or something like that so that's going to be a very you know important thing for investors to watch
12:53this nfl season how much they can actually keep growing the handle and ultimately how well the
12:58books do because as we know very well they got absolutely hammered last football season when i
13:03think there was about you know 10 weeks where 75 of the favorites won and the public loves to back
13:08favorites so we'll see if the pendulum swings this this season if the public gets hammered you know
13:12that's kind of how the law of averages usually work but again this is a very uh explosive business
13:17and risk averse business so um investors are going to be keen to see week to week how the results are
13:22doing and if it doesn't get off to a good start you can see some heat from wall street and the stock
13:26prices that would be fascinating to see if that was the case all right so uh unlike last season
13:32the sports books sam uh no doubt get off to a good start last night okay like if that's the play
13:39what we saw last night dog and under covering this is going to be the opposite of what we saw a year
13:46ago i i last year sam was such an anomaly for the sports books with them losing consistently on all
13:52these overs and favorites winning even in college football i have a feeling we're headed back to
13:56where we used to be yeah it really was and uh it it was such an anomaly because it's never even
14:03happened in the past like 80 years it wasn't just you know one weird season it was like the weirdest
14:07season ever and it came at a time too when you know more people had access to sports betting than ever
14:13so part of me thinks is you know the way people are betting is that changing things is you know the
14:19information that's being put out there the way we consume sports betting is at an all-time high so
14:23you have to wonder if that had an impact um but to your point correct i would be i would be shocked
14:28if it didn't swing back the other way this season not just because kind of that's what you know the law
14:32of averages tells us but also the sports books themselves do not want to be put in that position
14:36where they expose themselves to a lot of risk so it'll be really interesting to see how they maybe adapt
14:41and try to push or market different kinds of bets and how they react but definitely got off to a good
14:45start last night with a game going under uh you know with a big spread being covered by the underdogs
14:50so um i'd expect more in week one i expect sports books to be rooting for that you know so far most
14:55of the money tonight is on the chiefs uh most of the money is on the over so not surprising there
14:59um we'll see if the books can go 2-0 and we'll see how they do on player props and parlays and all the
15:05other fun things that the public has really loved to bet even more uh than spreads and totals and money
15:10lines at this point uh in the game yeah and having a really good week one in college i mean sam the
15:16two most public teams in college football alabama loses outright notre dame is the favorite loses too
15:24are there any other teams by the way or any priorities for the books that they have to be
15:27careful of i mean i know they got to be careful of alabama notre dame the dallas cowboys well aware
15:32of those teams yeah a lot of money on texas right now obviously they didn't have the best start
15:37a lot of money coming in ohio state as well i think with the expanding college football playoff
15:41it's going to be even more interesting to see uh where they shift their priorities and where the
15:46season-long betting kind of changes throughout the year especially with more games um i know arch
15:50manning was like he had more money than anybody else to win the heisman before the game that's
15:54obviously shifted a lot a lot of money coming on the alabama receiver but you know they lost they
15:59start off oh and one but you know now that you have more games and more of a chance to make the
16:03playoff um i think it leaves a lot more exposure if teams lose early on it's going to impact these
16:08kind of season-long betting markets a lot less on the nfl side you have most of the money on the
16:13bills the chiefs the eagles kind of the usual suspects there will be interesting to see if any
16:17of that shifts after week one but again you have 17 games down a regular season in the nfl so i think
16:23week one kind of means less and less to bettors in the betting public i mean last year you had the
16:27saints score over 40 points in back-to-back weeks to start the season they're now projected to have
16:31the least amount of wins in the nfl so you never know what can change throughout the long season
16:36but i'd imagine that the bills the chiefs uh eagles ravens will all be right up there throughout the
16:41season unless something crazy happens like an injury or some you know a suspension or something
16:46like that yeah i'm glad you brought that up sam because i've done a week of shows where everyone
16:50comes on here and just says this team's gonna stink it's a favorite this i mean do they not remember
16:55last season with the saints being amazing in the first couple of weeks i have a fee i mean
17:00i think dallas just scratched the surface my guess is the majority of teams in the nfl this weekend
17:05not just cover but maybe even win outright that's the way that the nfl usually is sam great stuff as
17:10always enjoy the games this weekend and we'll catch up with you again next week you too thanks greg
