A 37-year-old Debe woman has died, weeks after an explosion from a leaking gas tank, in her kitchen.

The victim was about to prepare lunch before heading to work when she tried to light the stove, unknowingly igniting the gas-filled room.

Our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh met with the victim’s husband today, who urged the gas company to take responsibility before others suffer the same fate.

00:00About seven weeks ago, 37-year-old Rhea George got up around 5am, as she usually did, to prepare lunch for her and her husband to take to work.
00:11Speaking at Yadigati village Debe home on Tuesday, her husband Rakesh George says he was still asleep, but Rhea later reported smelling gas when she entered the kitchen that morning.
00:22He says it was relatives on hearing the bomb-like explosion who woke him, and they all rushed to her aid.
00:52Then the ambulance come, I tell you she's back in the room, I take out your clothes, but I couldn't take out your clothes because while I was taking it out, everything was peeling and coming out.
01:02So they gave me some liquid to pour in she hand, and then the ambulance came, she's in the hospital.
01:07Well, I was devastated, I was crying, and she told me, don't worry, everything will be okay.
01:11At the San Fernando General Hospital, she stayed in ICU for a few days, then weeks in the burns unit improving, then in and out of ICU again before dying on Saturday morning.
01:24George says while he would encourage people to place their gas tanks on the outside of their homes if possible, or to open windows if they smell gas, ultimately, he believes the gas company should accept responsibility.
01:37He told reporters on Tuesday, the Blue Seal LPG tank was bought from NP.
02:07When contacted, Corporate Communications Officer with the Trinidad and Tobago National Petroleum Company Limited, Michel Salandi, said it was the first they were hearing of this incident, and quote,
02:19No report was made to NP. NP cannot investigate what was not reported to them. We have no comment to make if the claim is not verified, end quote.
02:30George and his wife were married 14 years and worked at the same supermarket in Debe.
02:35She, she, as a supervisor, and he, in the warehouse.
02:38It was inseparable. Everything we did together, everything. Work home, sleep, eat, go movies, go beach.
02:49If we drive, every single thing we did together.
02:54That was a pillar, and she gone. I don't know how to cope with this.
