Workers attached to the mental health unit of the Scarborough General Hospital are upset.
00:06
Sources at the hospital told TV6 News they have been complaining for the past two years
00:12
of having to work in mold-infested conditions and their cries have fallen on deaf ears.
00:20
They claim the mold scent is so strong that staff have to wear masks.
00:25
The mold infestation came to a head recently when a registered mental health nurse
00:32
who is not licensed to work at any other part of the hospital
00:36
was relocated to the Accident and Emergency A&E Department
00:42
because she was experiencing a rash on her skin due to the mold.
00:48
Since TV6 News raised the matter with the Health Secretary, Dr. Faith Brebner,
00:53
there has been some surface cleaning but deep cleaning is needed according to hospital sources.
01:01
And there is more as TV6 News was supplied with photographs where part of the ceiling was removed
01:08
revealing thick black mold also behind the furniture on the ward and at the bottom of this television stand.
01:17
Staff have also been complaining that the air conditioning unit in the ceiling
01:21
is constantly dripping water while there is also a leaking toilet upstairs of the ward.
01:29
Staff at the mental health unit say they were threatened that they must report for duty
01:34
after the entire night staff failed to show up for work.
01:39
Some arrived the next day wearing and working in full protective gear,
01:44
which they shared with patients.
01:47
TV6 contacted Health Secretary, Dr. Faith Brebner, on the matter.
01:51
She said, quote,
01:52
We are aware of the issue at the mental health ward.
01:56
I became aware of it recently and I instructed my team to begin solving the problem.
02:02
The ward is currently being cleaned.
02:04
Air testing will also be done.
02:07
When these works are completed, we will provide an update.
02:11
End quote.
02:12
Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
02:17
awesome.
02:21
Remember, it says the important thing you should have done.
02:23
You can do that.
02:35
There was a few people being treated, but there was nothing that you must get rid of.
