Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said the new Central Block Hospital at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital cost $1.3 Billion dollars and called the facility pure excellence.  Sharla Kistow has this story.

00:00Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Health Terence DL Singh said

00:04the staff at the Northwest Regional Health Authority has always stood as a

00:09beacon of excellence. Adding the new facility has a 540 bed capacity with a

00:15medical surgical trauma and general wards unit and more. What can this

00:20hospital do to patients? Who will be treated here? Intensive Care Unit,

00:28Pediatrics ICU, 15 beds dedicated to that purpose. High Dependence Unit,

00:33Pediatrics, HDU, 13 beds. So pediatrics will be returned to Port of Spain,

00:40General Hospital. Coronary Care Unit, 10 beds. Surgical wards, 194 beds. Medical

00:50wards, 216 beds. Psychiatry wards, 26 beds. Why psychiatry wards? You would have

00:58heard me talk about the decentralization of mental health. This is part of it. So

01:03not everyone will be in St. Anne's. We also have psychiatry wards in Arima,

01:10Sandy Grande, Point Fortin. As part of the government initiative to digitize the

01:15country, the health minister said he took the call seriously to bring the

01:20country health care into a digital era. He said that three steps were needed for

01:25full digitization, electronic medical records, electronic health records and

01:30electronic patient records. Everybody knows that they take an x-ray, they take

01:35a CT scan, they take an MRI. If you take one in Port of Spain and you happen to

01:41be in San Fernando on vacation or you happen to be in Grande for Easter

01:46weekend, something happens to you, what do they have to do? Re-image you. Take a

01:52new CT, a new MRI, a new thing. We are now in a stage where North Central RHE,

02:02Eastern RHE and Southwest RHE can share images. Minister D.L. Singh

02:09described the hospital and its staff as excellent, seeing they serve the country

02:14well. Following the ceremony, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and other

02:18ministers toured the central block of the Port of Spain General Hospital.
