00:01:00Thank you so much.
00:01:07You're noiseless.
00:01:13Thank you, everyone.
00:01:16Welcome.
00:01:17And in this incredible show, Richard reads a map, James wears a hat, and I remember how
00:01:27old I am.
00:01:29Here we go.
00:01:30Now, that smorgasbord of nail-biting action is all to come, but we start with our feet firmly
00:01:42on the ground.
00:01:43on the ground you see us three agree on well almost nothing really but we do agree that all
00:01:49medium-sized suvs are dreary and drab and rubbish yes but and we were talking about this the other
00:01:56day they are incredibly popular and we were arguing over which ones we'd buy if we absolutely
00:02:03had to yeah and needless to say we couldn't agree no it got quite heated it did get very heated
00:02:07indeed so we decided we should settle it by taking the grand tour this week to canada no we didn't
00:02:22this was the meeting point we chose the area 27 racetrack it was designed by f1 star jacques
00:02:32wheel nerve and it's a bit of a hidden gem
00:02:43and i'd be driving around it in this the new alfa romeo stelvio
00:02:51there is no way in hell that i would buy one of these because the saloon on which it's based is
00:02:57faster cheaper more economical and nicer to drive but if i had to have an suv this is what i'd choose
00:03:08at this point may arrived in the supercharged v6 range rover velour
00:03:13well you've done that wrong no i haven't look in the first season of the grand tour we did a big
00:03:25test of three large off-roaders you had a range rover and you went you'd be mad not to have a
00:03:30range rover the range rover is literally the best so you can't now stand there and say that it isn't
00:03:34what i meant when i said you've got it wrong well i meant two things one you picked the wrong one you
00:03:38should have had an alpha and two it's the wrong color i saw one of those in london the other day
00:03:43and it was silver and it's one of the best looking cars i've ever seen it is a very good looking girl
00:03:47yes i agree really good looking that's just hideous that looks like it's got a glove box full of k
00:03:52and mdf and building materials no what do i mean what is it i'm gonna mdma director knew that weirdly
00:04:00anyway never mind that what that is is a range rover that sits between the evoke yes and the
00:04:07range rover sport i thought the disco sat there no that sits over to one side no the discovery sport
00:04:14sits between the evoke and the range no way no the discovery sport no hang on evoke yes
00:04:22discovery sport off to one side that isn't yes it is why is it because that's the serious off-roady
00:04:27bit not the luxury before we had a chance to get to the bottom of land rover's very complicated
00:04:33lineup richard hammond arrived in a porsche mccann wow hammond that is modern yeah that's where you're
00:04:41wrong he's making a habit of that this is the new porsche mccann turbo performance pack you get 40
00:04:47horsepower more than the standard turbo so it makes 434 of them in total i'm sorry 434 in there yes and
00:04:55you managed to make it move why 505 italian horses which let's face it a flock of italian horses
00:05:03could go from shire to shetland these german horses how many talks 442 443 all right one more well
00:05:13it's too many for a car on still this isn't it what do you mean of course it's high it looks like
00:05:20somebody startled it look it's an suv it's at this point we decided to get on with testing the s part
00:05:29of our suvs the sporty bit
00:05:37we began by sending a bmw m3 sports saloon round the track to get a benchmark time
00:05:48it's a really really good race track
00:05:50good race track is like saying funfair it's just a contradiction james i think most of our viewers
00:05:59would disagree with you on that i don't know here it comes here it comes here it is and
00:06:08two minutes 26 seconds and james may will now fail to match that in his range rover velour
00:06:15james was soon ready to go but there was a problem can you hear me in the bmw
00:06:28could we have the brown bmw get off the track saying the key isn't in the car
00:06:33well how did he do a lap because if it was keyless if somebody got out with the key and he it was
00:06:39running no no because they stopped no they don't what because they don't otherwise it would just
00:06:43stop on the motorway what they won't do is restart all the while this is going on i'm forgetting the
00:06:48track you go down here and you go left and then it's a fog who has the key come on one of you has
00:06:56been near the bmw where's the key have you checked your pockets with the key nowhere to be found there
00:07:04was only one solution ditch the health and safety then get on with it anyway
00:07:16and he's off
00:07:21right compared with pinky and perky i have the least power the least torque i have the least
00:07:27impressive 0-60 time and top speed but i do have the mostest number of gears
00:07:33at eight so that's nice and confusing what happens here no idea you know one of the reasons
00:07:42why that thing is going to be very slow is because who's driving it yeah it's cause and effect
00:07:50now bigger range rovers the power is split 50 50 between the front and rear wheels on this one it's
00:07:56biased more towards the back which is of course very sporty but it will put some to the front when
00:08:02you're off road and you need traction or oh god when i cock it up do you know what he did last weekend
00:08:11he took his girlfriend across london to the victoria and albert museum to look at an exhibition of plywood
00:08:17how good was that next up richard lucky hammond his wife's already telephoned him this morning so if he
00:08:30goes around the corner with any tire squeal she's divorcing it
00:08:37and we're away
00:08:42finding the bmw on arriving at this first turn
00:08:46no tire squeal now this is the only one of the three that has a proper dual clutch gearbox the other
00:08:53two is just old school slush matic so it does change like a race car oh do you hear that nice
00:09:01little sporty noise yeah there's no doubt this thing can talk the talk it's got dry sump active aero but
00:09:11it's all wrapped up in the wrong body huge amount of lean i mean
00:09:19scrabbling for grip those squeals from the tires are in protest not for joy
00:09:25hammond breaking his record completing a lap without a crash
00:09:29and finally it was the turn of the stelvio
00:09:40oh well that's just a flying start
00:09:46and he's hit the bmw
00:09:50the twin turbocharged v6 engine in this thing well it's a masterpiece there's no other word
00:09:59the body's made from aluminium the prop shaft is made from carbon fiber this has all the ingredients
00:10:08of a full-on racer
00:10:12and it is quick easily the quickest car here 0 to 60 3.9 seconds top speed 177 in an suv
00:10:23in a straight line it would leave even the m3 for dead but this circuit isn't a straight line
00:10:31which causes a few problems oh chief among which is the steering
00:10:36it's as fast as the steering you get in the saloon car and it is too quick in a car of this type
00:10:43look at hell see what i mean tiniest little movement to the wheel and it's darting all over
00:10:53the place couple that to the wobbly long travel suspension and it all gets a bit haywire
00:11:02whoa that was rubbish what was that
00:11:06what's that all about and across the line after that fast but messy lap it was time to reveal the
00:11:15times bmw two minutes 26 range rover three minutes two porsche 246 you're only 20 seconds slower
00:11:28than the m3 alfa romeo 240 240 oh six seconds faster than the porsche turbo which proves conclusively
00:11:39that the most sporty of three completely unsporty vehicles yes is the alfa romeo yes right
00:11:48onwards to the next part of our test which was to find out how utilitarian they are
00:11:58we're going to do this by seeing which one of us can get the most amount of dogs in the boot of our car
00:12:07how many do you idiots what what are they if you say dog in canada these are what you get
00:12:12newfoundlands i mean they're enormous they're not dogs they're cattle yeah
00:12:19they're having sex there's dog sex there's actual dog sex going on
00:12:24dog sex maybe we don't need to see this in a brief break from the mating we got on with the test
00:12:31up we go come on come on come on up in the car oh it's a new range rover come on dog right um there's
00:12:42no no i've got up we go in we go
00:12:46the dog that has never been in a car and doesn't want to go in one right sit getting another dog
00:12:55the alfa romeo not only the sportiest vehicle
00:13:04the alfa romeo not only the sportiest vehicle but as you can see perfectly capable of handling
00:13:22a brace of dogs oh yeah the problem is you know electric tailgates if they sense anything they'll
00:13:36open yes that's what so you can't actually close it's not going to stay in is it oh
00:13:43biggest dog here is in yes but you try closing okay then close your boot lid
00:13:49go on then
00:13:51you see it won't close because it's electric
00:13:55what we've established then so far is that these cars are nowhere near as fast as an ordinary car
00:14:00around a racetrack that you cannot put a medium-sized dog in them because of the electric tailgate
00:14:07and you'll damage them because they've all got painted rear ends and carpeted boot floors and that
00:14:12concludes another important test i'm sorry
00:14:19we then went for a short drive to the location for our third test
00:14:23how well our cars worked as vehicles now to do this we are going to see whether our cars are better
00:14:33than a horse and here comes the horse now
00:14:39it's being ridden by somebody called miney kampf
00:14:43it's maddie what it's maddie it's maddie mine is something completely different yeah
00:14:48do you know my range rover is better than that horse in every single way ah but is it yes it is
00:14:53is it well yes it is because it doesn't jig around a bit when you're trying to get in it
00:14:57it doesn't set off on its own at maximum speed it doesn't veer off to one side to
00:15:02eat something or sniff another range rover's ass yes good thing is though we're trying to find out
00:15:06now whether our cars are faster than this horse in this arena this is barrel racing a sport for
00:15:22cowboy girls the idea is that you ride around three barrels as fast as possible
00:15:28while wearing randler jeans her time was 22.69 seconds that's what she did in i shall now go and
00:15:42beat it in my porsche well you've got to remember this is what the roads look like where hammond lives
00:15:47all of this is like his garden yeah it is broken tractor yeah knackered old caravan rusty fence
00:15:53it is we've come to hammond's house soon i was in position and preparing for the off right
00:16:01to do this i need sport plus firm suspension no ride height traction control off okay in three two
00:16:12one go and we're off barrel racing so i'm gonna get around this one first of all with it on my right
00:16:19i'm already going much faster than the horse left now
00:16:29what
00:16:33he's stuck
00:16:36a all-wheel drive overload what oh it's gone into limp home mode
00:16:44this is the most lamentable spectacle
00:16:50gonna do it again no don't let him do it again no you can't have another go that was your time and
00:16:55it was 48.77 that car it's not even half as good as a horse next it was may's turn in the velour
00:17:05oh
00:17:18he's not lost no he's not he's actually i really did think he'd be lost oh god he's gonna beat me
00:17:23come on oh no slowly look he can't find the pet
00:17:32what the hell is this
00:17:37what's the time please tell it's quickly the gate 40.78
00:17:43would you like to jump off the back here yes
00:17:45finally it was my turn and i'd had a brilliant idea now this is what those two didn't realize
00:17:55use the handbrake flip the tail around oh yeah in three two one go
00:18:02there it is ready for the handbrake here we come
00:18:12oh
00:18:14i'm trying to put the handbrake on but it's an electronic handbrake so it just stopped dead
00:18:19the electric handbrake is as useless as the electric tailgate
00:18:22oh no no i'm in limp home service atv system everything has failed
00:18:36virtually parked this is it flat out foot hard down barely moving
00:18:43that looks utterly feeble he's still not out and he's out damn you
00:18:48what's the time you did it yes in yes 45.44 so james may was the fastest yes and then i was the
00:19:03second fastest yes and with that test completed it was time for our conclusion we've proved that
00:19:12suvs are no good at sports or utility stuff and that if you want a vehicle you're better off
00:19:20with a horse and with that back to the tent
00:19:32we thought that we finished at that point but mr willman had other ideas so we're going to be
00:19:38picking that up later on yes we shall however now it's time to step in a dog turd of chat
00:19:46on conversation street
00:19:57now um i want to stick if i may for a minute or two on suvs because 25 of all new cars sold in britain
00:20:05these days are suvs and the thing is i was working out the other day why so many people buy them and i've
00:20:11worked it out see if you're in a hatchback or a saloon and you see an suv which is much larger coming
00:20:15towards you you think if we have an accident i'm going to come off worse so i'd better have one too
00:20:20they're like nuclear weapons once one person's got one everyone's got to have one next thing you know kim
00:20:25young-un's gone one and then it's all a disaster but the fact remains everybody has them or not they
00:20:31are really silly the moment we asked that alpha and the porsche to do a tiny bit of off-roading in
00:20:35that horse arena they just panicked and gave up when did a limp home i actually think they might
00:20:40have too much electronic stuff on those cars they do i mean the four-wheel drive system's all idiotic
00:20:45and then the handbrake that doesn't work no and the tailgates i mean how do you actually load a dog
00:20:51into a car i don't know how do you i mean you can't if you put your hand in to hold the dog back
00:20:56then it's going to detect your arm yes so then you'd have to go around and hold the dog against
00:21:00the seat then you can't close the boot you're not well i know and also you by you're walking around
00:21:04the dog's left on its own in a boot with their own what you're doing is asking a dog to stay alone
00:21:10in a room that's getting smaller it's not going to do it it's going to run away there is no solution to
00:21:15this that i can think of no i think no there is a way to do it you'd have to put your dog in the boot
00:21:20shoot it with a tranquilizer dart so that it went out for a bit well yes james you could do that uh
00:21:26or you could buy a car with a manually closing boot lid yeah which would be cheaper lighter faster
00:21:31and easier right so that's covered that don't buy suvs they're stupid but we have got more on them
00:21:37later on um i've got a bit of conversation is it about iambic pentameters no is it about the
00:21:42embryo 190 no is it about plywood no what is it about it's about vans yes because i borrowed a
00:21:50transit van the other day and the amazing thing about it is it's got all the equipment you'd expect
00:21:54on a well posh car including those sensing headlights that dip automatically so when they see the lights
00:22:00coming the other way they automatically dip but they also dip if they see a reflective road sign oh no
00:22:05that's unbelievable when that happens because it blinds you because they've dipped and now you can't
00:22:08see where you're going as you approach a sign warning you of a hazard ahead which you then can't
00:22:12see no they're all stupid here comes a really dangerous right hand bend i'll just turn the lights
00:22:17off so you can't see it but apart from that i have to say the ford transit van long wheelbase is
00:22:23absolutely brilliant much better than any suv and half the price and the amazing thing is you can get
00:22:28absolutely tons in the back of it well i mean just yeah james it's a van yeah exactly the one problem
00:22:36with it was i found is that when you load a van you have to get out you don't step out you sort
00:22:41of do a little jump so that you look no i don't do a little jump you do a little jump but what i
00:22:45didn't think of was that i had my big parker on that i've got on in that film and as i jumped out
00:22:49the hood caught on something on the roof and i actually i actually hanged myself pretty much as i
00:22:54if you actually had hung yourself we'd have put out a press release saying that you died in an auto
00:22:59erotic accident yeah we would did you have an orange in your mouth no i didn't yeah you would have
00:23:03an hour version of events mate definitely you'd have been wearing a fur-lined anorak and nothing
00:23:08else when you were found by police well you wish you hadn't started that conversation now we get
00:23:15quite a few letters asking us why we never review anything made by tesla very simple actually many
00:23:22years ago i uh gave a firm but fair review to the uh roadster picture of that one there yeah and tesla
00:23:29sued yes they did and they lost and then they appealed and they lost that which is all fine
00:23:35but being sued is a massive pain in the ass it keeps you awake at night really stressy so i thought
00:23:40i will never ever review another tesla as long as i live i shall simply ignore them however tesla is on
00:23:46the brink of becoming a mainstream manufacturer they reckon that by the end of this year they'll be bigger
00:23:52than volvo so i couldn't really ignore them anymore which is why i decided to test the new model x okay
00:23:59because i thought this might actually be an suv we all like
00:24:08with its bobby dazzler back doors this doesn't look like a normal family suv
00:24:13it looks better especially on the inside and it's more practical too because you have seating for seven
00:24:29a boot at the back that's big enough for an owl sanctuary
00:24:32and then another boot at the front because of course it's electric so there's no engine
00:24:42most of all though i'm intrigued by this car because it represents a whole new way of thinking about
00:24:50what a car actually is take this enormous command and control screen as an example it does all the usual
00:24:59stuff navigation music connectivity and so on and so much more besides for example if i want i can
00:25:06turn it into a sketch pad then i can just you know draw pretty patterns and so on as i go along or if
00:25:15i'm bored with being in where am i here there you are swindon which i am i can change it so that i become
00:25:22on mars look at that i'm actually on mars i mean i'm not there obviously
00:25:30but it says i am and that's fun oh and this is a good one if you don't want to see the car you're
00:25:36driving depicted on the screen you can change it so that it becomes
00:25:40bonds lotus that is actually quite funny
00:25:51of course you may think all of this might be a bit of a distraction when you're driving oh well
00:25:58now you see that's the thing because if i pull this lever here twice i get a bong to tell me i've engaged
00:26:06the autopilot which means i'm not driving it is seriously it's doing it all by itself
00:26:16legally cars aren't really allowed to drive around by themselves but this is getting awfully close
00:26:22because it's reading the white lines in the road and then simply sticking between them
00:26:27then if i want to change lanes i don't have to bother with any of that mirror signal maneuver
00:26:31nonsense you just put the indicator on and if it's safe to pull out it does
00:26:38put the indicator on to pull back into the central lane and
00:26:46that's just astonishing all of this means that i can drive along writing important messages on my
00:26:53sketch pad because i know that if the car in front slows down i'll slow down if it speeds up i'll speed
00:27:00up if the traffic stops i'll stop honestly this is the most relaxing thing i've ever driven because
00:27:07all i have to do is sit here unless of course i can't be bothered to do even that
00:27:17okay the car is over there and i literally can't be asked to walk to it so take out my phone put it in
00:27:25summon mode connecting to vehicle and here we go
00:27:40look at that i mean it can't extricate itself from a parking space or come to you from the other side
00:27:47of town so it is only a gimmick but what's wrong with a gimmick that's brilliant and stop
00:28:02but what's it like if you do actually drive it
00:28:05well because it's electric it's quiet obviously eerily quiet stupidly quiet too quiet as they say in the
00:28:21movies
00:28:24it's also heavy because of its massive battery pack however because it's mounted under the floor
00:28:32the center of gravity is very low down
00:28:37and because you've got one electric motor at the front driving the front wheels and one at the back
00:28:41driving the back wheels
00:28:47the car feels nimble and agile feels good
00:28:53so you're thinking it's a fun-filled family car with show-off doors and lots of stuff to excite your inner
00:29:03child but that there's nothing here for the enthusiastic motorist hmm not so fast on that one because
00:29:11what i'm going to do now is drag race this family suv against a mid-engined v10 powered 600 horsepower
00:29:24audi r8
00:29:29right before i do this i'm going to engage what's called ludicrous mode there we are hold on i've got a
00:29:36choice i really want to do this no i want my mommy yes bring it on there we are and then because i have
00:29:44the mental age of a nine-year-old i'm going to use the warp speed graphic and there it is right good i'm ready
00:30:02i'm going to use the warp speed graphic and there it is
00:30:15sweet jesus
00:30:18that really is properly lindicrous
00:30:24100 miles an hour
00:30:25105 110
00:30:28london 12th and he's coming
00:30:32but not fast enough
00:30:40that is astonishing
00:30:43small wonder this thing is fitted with my favorite mode of them all
00:30:48celebration mode there we are all i have to do now is put it in park and get out and lock the doors
00:30:55what's this
00:31:08So, this may be a two-and-a-half-ton, seven-seater PlayStation,
00:31:30but it'll do 0-60 in 3.1 seconds
00:31:34and has a top speed of 155.
00:31:38So, it really does seem to be all things to all men.
00:31:44It's serious and light-hearted. It's sensible and daft.
00:31:50It doesn't feel like anything else. It doesn't go like anything else.
00:31:55It's fabulous.
00:32:00There are, however, some drawbacks.
00:32:03But before talking about those, Mr Wilman said I should fill the remaining six seats with a team of lawyers.
00:32:10First thing I want to talk about is range, because Tesla say this will do 351 miles between charges.
00:32:22But, in my experience, electric cars never do the range that...
00:32:26How extensive is your experience, Jeremy?
00:32:29How many electric cars have you driven?
00:32:31Two.
00:32:33Both of them failed to do the range that the manufacturer said they would do.
00:32:37Because it depends on temperature, it depends on a million things, in any way.
00:32:40As you've said, legally, we need to make very clear, it depends. It depends on the conditions.
00:32:46Most people are not driving like a maniac like you.
00:32:49I'm not doing 34 miles an hour.
00:32:51At the moment.
00:32:52But so are we clear, we completely accept that this car can do 351 miles between charges, don't we?
00:32:59I don't know. I haven't tried it.
00:33:01Well, I think we should accept that, if that's what Tesla says and we don't have any evidence to the contrary.
00:33:05What, you just take what a car manufacturer says as being gospel?
00:33:08Vauxhall says its cars are exciting.
00:33:10I wouldn't wish to contradict them on television unless we had strong evidence to the contrary.
00:33:15Suggesting a claim of a manufacturer is untrue is not where we're going to go today, is it?
00:33:18All right, then. Batteries.
00:33:22We on this show have some experience of electrical fires in a crash.
00:33:28And this has the same sort of batteries that the Rimac had.
00:33:31Yeah, that was in a crash, wasn't it?
00:33:33Drove off an edge and rolled down two hillsides.
00:33:36What, you're saying, Richard, that was too small to steer over the steering wheel?
00:33:39I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying that that was a crash.
00:33:42What people don't understand is that if you crash an electrical car and it has lithium-ion batteries,
00:33:48it could catch fire.
00:33:49And often the fire brigade will turn up and they've only got water on board.
00:33:53So as you're sitting there on fire, you're then being electrocuted.
00:33:57It's just something that's worth bearing in mind, isn't it?
00:34:00Well, I think we should make it clear that we're not suggesting that these cars have any inherent defect.
00:34:05I mean, look what happened with Samsung with their batteries.
00:34:07Well, we're not going to start defaming Samsung, Owen.
00:34:10I think the battery is a good analogy for liable law and reviews generally, in that it has to be balanced.
00:34:17You must have the positive and you must have the negative. Should we bear that in mind?
00:34:21No, what we should bear in mind is that, what I've just written on the screen.
00:34:23I know an area we need to discuss. I think the biggest drawback with this car actually is the width of it.
00:34:32It's so wide, 79 inches, that it won't actually go across Albert Bridge in London.
00:34:37It really won't go across the bridge or do you mean it won't go through a width restriction, a road narrowing?
00:34:43Right, so I have to say this is too wide to fit through the width restriction at the start and indeed finish of Albert Bridge.
00:34:55That's perfect.
00:34:58There is, however, one advantage to this size, especially in a supermarket car park when your Model X is full of lawyers.
00:35:06No, no, no, listen.
00:35:09Mean what you say, just say what you mean, that's the law.
00:35:11Just stay there, all right, stay there.
00:35:15OK, got the phone, summon mode, forwards.
00:35:27Sorry, that never ceases to amaze me.
00:35:30Little bit more, little bit more, and stop.
00:35:33Right, now they can't open the doors, they're trapped, which means they can't interfere when I tell you this car's really big drawback.
00:35:43It's a hundred and fifty-six thousand pounds.
00:35:52I think this is a lot to like on that.
00:35:55Yeah.
00:35:56This is a lot to like.
00:35:58Thing is, though, is that an SUV that we all like?
00:36:04Well, not at that price.
00:36:05No, 156 is silly.
00:36:07I do love some of the gimmicks, though.
00:36:09Yeah, now on that, I have to say, you know the summons facility it's got on it, OK?
00:36:13That didn't always work.
00:36:15And then there was the business on the motorway where it checks for fast traffic coming up behind before moving lanes.
00:36:20How did you find that?
00:36:22Well, I can't say.
00:36:24So I've got a lawyer to write this for me.
00:36:26Really?
00:36:30It's my honest belief that a driverless system does not always behave as you'd expect, and when it doesn't, it can be discomforting.
00:36:37Discomforting?
00:36:38However, I acknowledge and accept that a number of external factors can reasonably result in a driverless car's decision to deactivate self-driving, including, but not limited to, other cars on the road unexpectedly accelerating.
00:36:52So?
00:36:53No.
00:36:54What?
00:36:55For the avoidance of any doubt, these personal observations about driverless cars are my honest opinion and should not be regarded as any statement about the general safety road-worthiness or mechanical effectiveness of this specific car or any other Tesla vehicle.
00:37:11It is bloody fast, though, isn't it?
00:37:13It is really fast.
00:37:15We actually put it round the Ebola drone.
00:37:16It did a 129.6, which is the same as a five-litre Mustang.
00:37:20It's quick.
00:37:21But anyway, let's park the Tesla now and move on to Celebrity Face-Off.
00:37:38Another important question.
00:37:41And it's this.
00:37:43Who is the world's fastest golfing enthusiast?
00:37:46Well, to find out, would you please welcome Rory McIlroy and Paris Hilton?
00:37:53CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:37:56Look at this!
00:37:58That is a surprise!
00:38:02Peter, how are you?
00:38:03Have a seat, Eric.
00:38:04Lovely to see you.
00:38:05How are you?
00:38:07Have a seat.
00:38:09We're not messing around.
00:38:10We're not messing around this week.
00:38:14Now, you are both golf enthusiasts.
00:38:17Well, you obviously are, because you're heavyweight golfing champion of the world.
00:38:21Sort of need to be, yeah.
00:38:23You, more of a surprise, but your family, of course, does own 50 golf tracks, isn't it?
00:38:27Yes.
00:38:29Or is it courses?
00:38:30Courses.
00:38:31Courses, that's what it is.
00:38:3250 golf, so you play quite a bit of golf.
00:38:34I'm not as good a golfer as him, obviously.
00:38:36As him?
00:38:37Yes.
00:38:38Not figures.
00:38:39But I have been playing since I was around four years old.
00:38:42The one area of golf I really genuinely love are the golf carts.
00:38:46Me too.
00:38:47I don't think I've ever got out of a fully functioning golf cart in my life, ever,
00:38:53because I've always crashed them.
00:38:54I don't know what it is that makes you think, right, I'm going to go a million.
00:38:57You would like my golf cart because I've got the restrictor taken off it,
00:39:00so it goes about 50 miles an hour.
00:39:01You're kidding.
00:39:02No, it does, yeah.
00:39:03That's sick.
00:39:04It does.
00:39:05How much damage could I do with that?
00:39:06You could do a lot.
00:39:07I love the golf carts.
00:39:08Actually, when I was a little girl, my grandfather has a Rolls Royce golf cart and a Bentley one,
00:39:14so my sister and I decided that we wanted to race them.
00:39:18So we're going around the pond on the golf course and going so fast,
00:39:22I smashed the rolls into this huge rock.
00:39:26The entire thing was smashed.
00:39:27I was totaled.
00:39:28We were so scared.
00:39:29We just ran away.
00:39:31And then later, my grandpa's like, where's the Rolls?
00:39:33Like, I want to go golfing right now.
00:39:35I have no idea.
00:39:36Stolen is the answer.
00:39:37That's what I always say.
00:39:38Someone went and had a joy ride in it.
00:39:41I know one thing I wanted to talk about is golfing slang.
00:39:44Okay.
00:39:45Because apparently there's quite a bit of, well, it's quite rude.
00:39:48Are you familiar with this?
00:39:50There's a Richard Hammond.
00:39:51I know that, isn't there?
00:39:52There is a Richard Hammond, which means straight down the middle like a rocket, then veers off into the rough at the last minute.
00:39:56Jamie Oliver, you really want to smack it, but you can't.
00:40:09I actually like Jamie.
00:40:10I want to make that quite plain.
00:40:11This is not me.
00:40:12This is just golfing people.
00:40:13Ryanair, okay in the air, but landed miles from where you wanted it to live.
00:40:18Right, shall we go on to cars?
00:40:21Because this is another thing you two have in common.
00:40:23Genuinely an astonishing collection of cars that you both have.
00:40:27You started at the age of 17 with a BMW.
00:40:30Yeah, I had a One Series was my first car.
00:40:32Did that go well?
00:40:33Not very well, no.
00:40:35I thought I was cool having a BMW at that age, just passed my test.
00:40:39Tried to do some handbrake turns in the golf club car park.
00:40:42And that didn't go so well.
00:40:43Nearly actually drove it through the front door of the golf club.
00:40:46Hit a big high curb, bent the steering axle, and I literally had to drive it like this to keep it straight
00:40:52for the five miles I went home.
00:40:53And I got back to my parents and I said I had to swerve to miss a fox away home and it occurred.
00:40:59But, any girls watching, they will have been impressed.
00:41:02We've argued this many times.
00:41:03When a girl sees a guy do a handbrake turn, it's like when a peacock does that feather thing.
00:41:08You say you're not interested, but you are, aren't you?
00:41:11I think it's pretty hot.
00:41:13First honest girl I've ever met.
00:41:15So that was your one series and then you moved up quite quickly to a, well, edge 19, I think.
00:41:2119, I won my first professional golf tournament at 19 and I always thought the image of success was a Ferrari.
00:41:28So I bought a Ferrari at 19.
00:41:30How the hell did you insure it?
00:41:33The premium was quite high.
00:41:36Make it live for us.
00:41:3725 grand a year.
00:41:41You need to win a lot of golf.
00:41:43Yeah, you do, yeah, yeah.
00:41:44And did that kindle like a love of Ferraris?
00:41:47It did, yeah.
00:41:48And I always know that you've loved Ferraris and I, and the reason that I have the cars that I have at the minute, I saw you test drive the F12 that I have and the other.
00:41:56The F12? That's a scary car.
00:41:58You've got an F12 now?
00:41:59Yeah.
00:42:00That's a really, that's almost too fast.
00:42:02And didn't you get a LaFerrari?
00:42:03I've got a LaFerrari, yeah.
00:42:04No, because why did you go for a LaFerrari and not a P1, which I proved on this show was better?
00:42:09I would have killed myself in the P1, I think.
00:42:12The P1 is nuts, but they are brilliant. I mean, the LaFerrari is awesome.
00:42:15It's, it's incredible. I mean, I, I haven't taken the LaFerrari on a track like, you know, what we obviously did today.
00:42:21Um, and I don't know if I'd want to. I'd be so scared of flipping another roll in it.
00:42:25That's where it sort of, that's where it belongs on a trip.
00:42:26I know, I know, I just, I just, I'm scared.
00:42:30That's an impressive car collection.
00:42:31Well, not really a collection, but two, they're really super fast Ferraris.
00:42:35But yours is not far behind, because you've got McLaren.
00:42:38Yes.
00:42:39It's 650, yeah?
00:42:40It's absolutely.
00:42:41I love it. I think it's just such, like, a sexy car.
00:42:44It is. And then, and I really hate to say this, my favourite car in the whole wide world, you also own,
00:42:48which makes me slightly murderous, actually, is the word I'm looking for.
00:42:52You've got a Lexus LFA.
00:42:54I actually got the second one they ever made.
00:42:57Really?
00:42:58So, I was so excited, and just driving on the street, no one had ever seen it before, so they literally looked at it like a UFO or something.
00:43:03Yeah, it's definitely a head-turner.
00:43:05Didn't you drive a Bentley every day?
00:43:07Um, yes, I actually had a Bentley custom-made, so it's all baby pink, with crystals on it.
00:43:12Oh, wow, that's...
00:43:15Very pink. I used to drive it all the time, but when I drive it, it's literally like Mickey Mouse at Disneyland.
00:43:20People are pulling over on the freeway, taking selfies.
00:43:25It causes, like, accidents almost, so I try to keep it at home now.
00:43:30Anyway, listen, you obviously came to do your laps.
00:43:32There's no snow this week, which is good, but it's still quite greasy.
00:43:35It was icy.
00:43:36Yeah, it was a little greasy, yeah.
00:43:37Icy and greasy, so we're not going to be looking for a record time today.
00:43:40And you were seriously pushing it, by all accounts.
00:43:43I was.
00:43:44I mean...
00:43:45I love driving fast, and I love when there's no cops around to pull me over, so it's...
00:43:50Exactly. Well, anybody want to see an outtake, actually, of Paris trying really hard?
00:43:57Let's have a look. This is the last corner, which you've got to slow down for,
00:44:01which we obviously never told before, girl. Here we go.
00:44:04Shit!
00:44:05LAUGHTER
00:44:08That's a properly big one.
00:44:10Yeah.
00:44:11Well done.
00:44:15You did have a problem, apparently, with that last corner.
00:44:17Because I just wanted to go so fast at the end, and then just making that right...
00:44:22Because it's a really slow... You've got to slow right down to get around.
00:44:24Yeah.
00:44:25I thought I was going to flip over. I was actually really scared at that point.
00:44:28Would anybody like to see Paris' actual lap?
00:44:31Yeah!
00:44:32Let's play the tape.
00:44:36Yeah, that's an aggressive start.
00:44:39Let's go!
00:44:41OK, the first S.
00:44:43Ooh, beautifully done. Keeping it very tidy.
00:44:47I like to break there.
00:44:49Oh, girl, that's... Was that left foot probably not left foot breaking?
00:44:51That's panic breaking.
00:44:52Ooh, I see.
00:44:53That's the tail out there.
00:44:55On to the difficult bit.
00:44:57And how are we going to handle this?
00:44:58First right.
00:44:59Wide, but...
00:45:01Nicely held.
00:45:03And completely off the track.
00:45:06But that's OK. Back on it again now.
00:45:08F***ing rocks.
00:45:10F***ing rocks.
00:45:11Ooh, that's...
00:45:13Family-friendly words there.
00:45:15Through the gravel cell.
00:45:16Still looking tidy.
00:45:17Not necessarily the wrong thing to do.
00:45:20Keeping it tidy.
00:45:21Ooh, that's wild.
00:45:22And now trying to get in shape.
00:45:24Ready to go back on the tarmac.
00:45:26Bet this was slippery too.
00:45:27Ooh, no, you've done that beautifully.
00:45:30And then.
00:45:31Right.
00:45:32Now, round the final left.
00:45:33And on to the straight.
00:45:35Flat out.
00:45:36Let's do it.
00:45:38Now, this isn't your tricky, but this is now...
00:45:40You've got to start breaking...
00:45:43Now, and do you?
00:45:45Oh, yeah.
00:45:49That's heavy.
00:45:50That was probably too much breaking.
00:45:51But there we are anyway.
00:45:52You've made it across the line.
00:45:53Nicely done.
00:45:56Good.
00:45:58Looks good.
00:46:01So, what do you reckon then?
00:46:02Now you've seen that.
00:46:03Are you feeling nervous?
00:46:05Yeah.
00:46:07Do you want to see Rory's lap?
00:46:08Yeah.
00:46:09Let's see if you chose the wrong sport.
00:46:11Here we go.
00:46:13Right.
00:46:14And we are underway.
00:46:16Third.
00:46:18Fourth.
00:46:19Breaking the 50 board.
00:46:21This is a man who's been listening to the instructors, haven't you?
00:46:23You can tell.
00:46:24That's nicely done.
00:46:26Listening to the instructors is always the key, really.
00:46:29Most men think, I can go better than they do.
00:46:31I know more than they do.
00:46:33Right.
00:46:34And...
00:46:35Holding it on.
00:46:36Yeah.
00:46:37Are we going to take the Paris line?
00:46:38No.
00:46:39We're going to stick on the actual track.
00:46:40Oh, a little bit.
00:46:41That's better.
00:46:42Get two sideways, Rory.
00:46:45Yep.
00:46:46That's beautifully held through there.
00:46:49Smooth power application.
00:46:51Yep.
00:46:52And more of a...
00:46:53Yeah, you should have done this.
00:46:54You're in the wrong sport.
00:46:55No.
00:46:56No, this is looking very good indeed.
00:46:57Are we going to be able to control it here?
00:46:59Yep.
00:47:00Very nicely.
00:47:01And keeping it to the right.
00:47:02Which puts you in the right place for that left?
00:47:04Keep two tyres on the track, so that's all right.
00:47:06And off we go.
00:47:07OK, come on.
00:47:08Lift a little.
00:47:09Turn in.
00:47:11Probably not flat through there today.
00:47:13It's too slippery, too icy.
00:47:15And here's the corner that we were having trouble with.
00:47:16This is the tricky one.
00:47:17The last corner.
00:47:19Oh, a bit of understeer, but just keeping it...
00:47:21Oh, no!
00:47:22Oh, no!
00:47:24Just about made it across the line.
00:47:27Oh, yeah.
00:47:31So, there we are.
00:47:34Right now, just so you know, I've got the...
00:47:37Some times we've had.
00:47:38Fastest so far, 117.
00:47:40Kevin Peterson.
00:47:41Kevin Peterson, yeah.
00:47:42Slowest.
00:47:43Dynamo last week, 139.3.
00:47:45But the track was two feet deep in snow, so he has got an excuse.
00:47:48Oh, he does.
00:47:49He does.
00:47:50He does.
00:47:51Got your times here.
00:47:52Paris Hilton.
00:47:531.25.8.
00:47:54So, that puts you...
00:47:55We'll have a round of applause for that.
00:47:56APPLAUSE
00:47:57You're faster than two people you've never heard of.
00:47:58Alfie Bow and Bill Bailey.
00:47:59Are both, well, roundabout that sort of time, OK?
00:48:001.25.8.
00:48:01That's the time you've got to beat on a greasy track.
00:48:02Rory.
00:48:031.25.
00:48:041.25.
00:48:051.25.
00:48:06That's the time you've got to beat on a greasy track.
00:48:07Rory.
00:48:081.25.
00:48:091.25.
00:48:101.25.
00:48:11That is a very good time.
00:48:12APPLAUSE
00:48:13Very good time.
00:48:14Faster than Hugh Bonneville.
00:48:17Faster than Hugh Bonneville.
00:48:18There you go.
00:48:19Faster than Hugh Bonneville and he was on a dry track.
00:48:20So that was extremely good.
00:48:21I can't thank you enough for coming.
00:48:22I really can't.
00:48:25、 absolute pleasure to have you here.
00:48:27Ladies and gentlemen, Paris Hilton.
00:48:29All right.
00:48:30Paradeonan.
00:48:31That's the time you've got to beat on a greasy track.
00:48:330.25.
00:48:34That's the time you've got to beat on a greasy track.
00:48:371.25.
00:48:381,25.
00:48:390.26.
00:48:40have you here ladies and gentlemen paris hilton and the world's fastest golfing enthusiast rory
00:48:53now earlier on we were in canada where we proved that medium-sized suvs are useless
00:49:00at everything but mr wilman said the tests we'd done were idiotic yeah he said people
00:49:07actually buy them to go canoeing and hiking and mountain biking and he then also said
00:49:12that we could only come home once we'd completed one more challenge
00:49:26why are we telling speed boats never mind that james why have you bought a brown speed boat
00:49:39uh it's orange never mind james's brown speed boat where's your alfa romeo
00:49:45it was stolen no it wasn't it was i came out of the hotel this morning just gone literally gone you
00:49:53know canada is number one in the world for car theft no it isn't so what i've done is i've replaced it
00:49:59with this ford f-150 pickup truck which is the best-selling vehicle not just in canada but the
00:50:06entire world yeah but the fact is you've replaced your alpha because we were told to tow speed boats
00:50:14and you can't fit a tow bar to estelvio the problem is that they've rooted the exhaust on estelvio in
00:50:22such a way that you can't actually as hammond says fit a tow bar i think the thing is that in italy
00:50:28it's unmanly and undignified to tow something i mean why would they tow something it just slows you down
00:50:37soon we arrived at the start point for mr willman's challenge which was precisely in the middle of
00:50:45nowhere james what this is a skip no it's just all stuff that was thrown in well literally thrown in
00:50:54yeah it's all it's all boat stuff is it what there's a traffic cone well that's probably something
00:50:59to do with boating it isn't anything to do with boating it's an oar in a boat suit and a what are
00:51:04you doing looking for bears why because one of the things i don't want to be is eaten by a bear
00:51:10i won't worry about being eaten by one well i do well they do far worse than that oh hang on hang on
00:51:16hang on we have a message and it's from mr willman each of your cars has been fitted with a satellite
00:51:23compass which will direct you to the finish line whoever arrives first can claim to have the best
00:51:28suv well that's me well probably haven't got an suv it's got a twin turbocharged v6 same as the alpha
00:51:36four-wheel drive same as the alpha it's exactly the same color with all that cleared up the race began
00:51:43ah right where are we now there my compass thing says i'm gonna go in that direction
00:51:525.1 kilometers how hard can that be
00:52:00come on little porsche this is your chance to show your off-road credentials
00:52:04the porsche was the only one with a proper four-wheel drive system for this it can divert all of its power
00:52:09to the front wheel so it can scrabble its way out of trouble like a dog pulling itself with its front legs
00:52:16right typical of those two just roar off being brilliant let's have a look at the map first
00:52:26right let's go straight up here through these nettles what are they christmas trees i don't know what they are
00:52:32if you really want to go off road you need a real off-road a range rover a land cruiser a raptor
00:52:45there's no point messing around with a little suv it's not going to go anywhere speaking of which
00:52:56oh i'm stuck going backwards now
00:53:03so i'm going west northwest that's high terrain that's very high i want to avoid that i should
00:53:10try and get through that
00:53:15come on come on
00:53:22all-wheel drive overload rear-wheel drive only reduce engine load
00:53:25it doesn't work i need another route james meanwhile had sorted out his route and was
00:53:34now sorting out his car i'm putting my response system in grass gravel and snow it has just started
00:53:41snowing i also have had what the hell is that look he's got exactly nowhere what a spanner anyway
00:53:52with both my colleagues still on the start line i was winning by miles
00:53:59this is a very narrow little path this one i don't want to be making a mess oh hello
00:54:04right what that is is is a fallen down tree how the hell did you reverse a trailer
00:54:16so if i turn the steering wheel this way
00:54:18this way i've got it i've got it this is a bit no oh
00:54:31oh shit no oh god
00:54:37boat is still attached correct direction roughly right everything's excellent
00:54:46plenty of power this is good
00:54:50right arrows pointing that way
00:54:51now we're making progress
00:54:59once again if i turn into the
00:55:04no this way
00:55:09oh trust that's not all right having carefully unhitched the trailer
00:55:15right i was soon turned round and back on the move looking for another route
00:55:22trailers definitely have
00:55:25an intelligence they have a mind of their own and it's a vindictive mind it wants you to fail
00:55:34and thanks to its vindictiveness all of my lead in this important race was gone
00:55:44quite ballsy of land rover really to build a car that doesn't have a low ratio gearbox
00:55:51but there is a lot of electronically controlled stuff the central diff for example it just locked for me
00:55:56then i can feel it working stuff out finding the grip on different wheels
00:56:01and it works look at that
00:56:09my off-road work is exceptional
00:56:11how long before james may says keep thumbs out of the steering wheel it's all he knows about off-roading
00:56:20thumbs outside the steering wheel in case it kicks
00:56:22mud rut selected just because it's gone a bit slippery but then i too hit a dead end
00:56:33oh
00:56:33oh
00:56:34york
00:56:35right trailer reversing tip
00:56:39if you look in the mirror and i see i want to go the boat to go that side i lift that hand
00:56:45so you look in the mirrors so i do that
00:56:46well i am getting closer according to my electronic compass this is looking good
00:56:58i just don't know if they don't find this track
00:57:05to be honest in the raptor i didn't need a track
00:57:10i'm not a fan of pickup trucks and i will kill you if you ever told richard
00:57:13him and this but this is impressive it's just drumming its fingers coming along here i mean
00:57:20if i'd have asked it to tow a battleship maybe it would be struggling a bit but a speedboat
00:57:31yes well done you little car
00:57:36do you know i'm gonna win this
00:57:39oh hang on a minute
00:57:40well this thing's telling me it must be on the other side of the lake
00:57:49i can see a flag there's a flag it's there
00:57:53clearly it would be impossible to drive the mccan round the shoreline
00:57:58so i needed to break out the map and find another route
00:58:02a track track track track there will be one
00:58:05oh oh good
00:58:07why you stopped here finish line's over there yes i know i'm just working out how to get there
00:58:15you just drive around the outside blow it on the beach i can't do that that's because you're in
00:58:20the wrong car but you're in the wrong car i'm not in the wrong car rather than have a pointless debate
00:58:28about this i decided to let the raptor do the talking here we go oh yeah
00:58:35meanwhile very far back in a blizzard on a hill the velar's electronics predictably were starting to
00:58:45struggle right low traction launch activate
00:58:52doesn't like it
00:58:53oh no i've got to be honest i'm a bit disappointed i'm using absolutely everything on here
00:59:02what's that big bump this beach is woodier than i thought but the speed boat is still upright and
00:59:22that's good and round and we go oh no no no no no bloody hell
00:59:35distance reducing hill descent control is automatically on trolling the speed with my thumb
00:59:42um it's excellent at going downhills this range rover not so sure about it going up them having
00:59:50righted the boat with no help from any of the film crew
00:59:55i was back on the move
01:00:00it's not just dithering about
01:00:01this is what we need proper track it's further from the lake i'll have further to go but
01:00:18i can get a move on now we've got a race on our hands eventually i arrived at the lake but i wasn't
01:00:27worried about how far back i was because i'd had an idea that message from mr willman it said the
01:00:35first person to get to the finishing line didn't it is that right director yes first person didn't
01:00:41say anything about the car so why don't i just unload the boat and boat across meanwhile i'd left
01:00:48the difficult beach through a wood and was on a track with a problem
01:00:55my vindictive trailer has now decided to have a puncture
01:01:02well i'm going to pay it back by not stopping because i've got time
01:01:06i didn't even stop when the vindictive trailer decided to be on fire
01:01:21oh i'm gonna lose that outboard
01:01:24i'm gonna lose that outboard
01:01:25i'm gonna lose that outboard
01:01:27okay
01:01:28so now i'm going to lose that outboard
01:01:30i'm gonna lose that outboard
01:01:32i'm gonna lose that outboard
01:01:34and i'm cutting in front of this point
01:01:35one wheel on my wagon and i'm still rolling along
01:01:40This is good. This is very good.
01:01:43But then...
01:01:45Bloody hell.
01:01:47No! I'm in another dead end!
01:01:50There was only one thing for it, another manual three-point turn.
01:02:01This steel's just so warm and comfortable.
01:02:10Whoa! Come on!
01:02:14Drifting my boat!
01:02:29I'm 57.
01:02:33No! No! No!
01:02:40Come on, come on, come on!
01:02:47Right.
01:02:48Meanwhile, I was ready for the final charge.
01:02:51Goodbye, losers.
01:02:53Ignition...
01:02:54Start!
01:03:04Oh, Cork!
01:03:08I'm just going as fast as I dare.
01:03:11Speed, speed, power.
01:03:20With the other two heading for failure,
01:03:22I'd got HMS Orange started and was cruising to an easy win.
01:03:28This is just brilliant.
01:03:30Full throttle!
01:03:31Oh, Cork!
01:03:44The boat is beginning to behave oddly.
01:03:47There is a bit of water coming in, but it's not very far.
01:03:57Come on!
01:03:58There's the flag!
01:04:03There's the flag!
01:04:08Oh, really?
01:04:10A loser!
01:04:13Oh, God.
01:04:15Well, hang on a minute.
01:04:16What?
01:04:17Where's your boat?
01:04:19It was there.
01:04:20No, it's not.
01:04:21It's just some bits of boat.
01:04:23It's a boat...
01:04:24It's a boat jigsaw.
01:04:26So, you're finishing this race without your car...
01:04:28Yeah.
01:04:29...without your trailer or the boat that was on it...
01:04:31And you've got the boat!
01:04:32You've got some bits of boat and you're claiming to be the winner.
01:04:35Listen.
01:04:36You've come second.
01:04:37You're taking it badly, I think.
01:04:39It doesn't matter.
01:04:40Because an even more interesting race
01:04:43is developing out on the water as we speak.
01:04:48Handling is affected by water ingress.
01:04:50It's getting closer to my kneecaps.
01:04:52Our Canadian flag, come on!
01:04:55Will he make it to the finish point before he sinks?
01:04:59That's got some tension in it, hasn't it?
01:05:01I know!
01:05:02There's no tension here.
01:05:03This is done.
01:05:04Oh, yeah, this is...
01:05:05But we'll give you more.
01:05:06You two!
01:05:08Help!
01:05:08Come and rescue!
01:05:10I'm going down!
01:05:11My boat's smashed to pieces, James!
01:05:13I can't help you with that!
01:05:15My boat's...
01:05:16Look, it'll take me ages.
01:05:17It's all the way over there!
01:05:19It's going down!
01:05:20I'd have to move mine out of the way.
01:05:23Yeah.
01:05:24And then I'd have to walk up there, along those rocks.
01:05:27It's gone!
01:05:28Oh, Jesus!
01:05:30Ah!
01:05:30It's so cold!
01:05:31Look, he's going...
01:05:33Ah!
01:05:33You bastard!
01:05:34Have you ever seen...
01:05:35Ah!
01:05:37My testicles have retreated!
01:05:38We don't need to know that!
01:05:40Oh!
01:05:41Oh, no!
01:05:42Oh!
01:05:44Oh!
01:05:45That hurt me just watching.
01:05:46I've got a runny nose thinking of.
01:05:48My bit's just shriveled.
01:05:49Oh!
01:05:50Cold day.
01:05:52That was a cold, cold day.
01:05:54I wouldn't have wanted to be in that water.
01:05:56That couldn't help.
01:05:58I really wouldn't.
01:06:00What...
01:06:01What that film proves is that if you want to buy a Range Rover Velar
01:06:06or a Stelvio or a McCann, you're better off with a Ford Raptor.
01:06:11Yeah, not only that, the Raptor is actually near as damn it.
01:06:14Half the price of those other SDGs.
01:06:15Yes, but you can't buy a Raptor in Britain.
01:06:18And so, on that terrible disappointment, for you lot, at least,
01:06:22it's time to end.
01:06:23Thank you so much for watching.
01:06:24Goodbye!
