00:00We're reacting to Aaron Turner, the agent for Jonathan Kaminga,
00:03coming on for, let's just call it what it was,
00:06as long as Steini and Goo wanted him to.
00:09That's how, that's, he came on for as long as they wanted him to.
00:13Even when I thought, you know, they did a great job of being like,
00:17hey, tell Jonathan to come over.
00:20And I was shocked in the moment when Aaron was like, well, um,
00:24and he starts looking.
00:25He's a couple courts over.
00:26Yeah, but he wasn't like, guys, we're not doing that.
00:29He was like, I mean, he'd probably come over and say hi,
00:32but he's not right.
00:33He's not in the neighborhood right now.
00:35And then later on he did.
00:36And they tried to hit him the AirPods and then everything went south.
00:39But, um, yeah, like I, again,
00:43they tried to strike a chord of sure.
00:46Like we're just chilling here.
00:48I just don't see that as chilling.
00:50I saw that.
00:51I saw this as a very, very,
00:53a move of desperation coming from frustration.
00:57Um, and the fact that I,
00:59that I very much my perception right now is those of you expecting the
01:02Warriors to move again on a contract off is not going to happen.
01:06I would be shocked if that happened.
01:08I don't think that they're going to move up in the money because the,
01:12the offers already patently fair.
01:14It's a good number.
01:15It's a fair number and they don't want to get into that second apron.
01:19And he actually addressed it.
01:20Aaron Turner, he said, you know, we don't,
01:22we don't want to have to get them into the second apron and have it
01:25hamstring their ability to still improve the team around the core and
01:30Jonathan coming and all the rest of it.
01:31So yeah, the money's not going to go any higher.
01:34They already tacked on an extra year from the previous offer.
01:38So now it's three and 75 and they're not going to move off of their team
01:43option because if they do that,
01:45then all of a sudden a trade with Jonathan involved,
01:49you get a lot less back because the team that's going to acquire him,
01:52they're going to want as much control as they possibly can.
01:55100%.
01:56Yeah.
01:56All right.
01:56So like, we're here for you.
01:58Eight at eight, nine, five, seven, nine, five, 70.
01:59We'll play some more of the, uh,
02:01the clips from Aaron Turner, Kaminga's agent earlier.
02:04Let's start with Ed in Benicia.
02:07Hi, Ed.
02:07Thank you for calling.
02:08What's up.
02:09Hey, how's it going guys?
02:11What's up.
02:12All right.
02:13What's, what's up is if, uh,
02:15Jonathan Kaminga and his agent are foolish enough to do the qualified
02:20offer, uh,
02:22the only person to blame for this situation other than those two people is
02:26Joe Laker.
02:27Joe Laker is the guy that pushed for, uh,
02:29Kaminga to be drafted when there were coaches and scouts with the
02:33Warriors, they wanted somebody else.
02:34Namely,
02:35the guy that's making $245 million down in Orlando.
02:38Franz Wagner.
02:39Same thing happened to Wiseman.
02:40When Wiseman, uh,
02:41got drafted,
02:42uh,
02:43there were elements in the organization that did not want Wiseman.
02:45They wanted somebody else.
02:47If they take that qualified offer,
02:49it's on Joe Laker's account only.
02:54That's what my comment is.
02:55Yeah,
02:55Ed,
02:56that's an interesting,
02:56uh,
02:57thanks for calling,
02:58man.
02:58Appreciate you listening.
02:59Um,
03:00look,
03:01I always have a hard time going back in time and,
03:03and just receiving as gospel,
03:06what we've heard about who got drafted and why,
03:09and who in the organization said this,
03:11that,
03:11and the other.
03:12I know what,
03:12what Ed is saying,
03:13um,
03:14in Slater's report,
03:15which I believe 100% uh,
03:19is that back in the day,
03:20there were those in the organization pushing for someone else with that
03:24seventh pick.
03:25Franz Wagner's name came up.
03:27So I'm sure there were,
03:28but I don't know that that's ever not the case.
03:30Like it's a whole organization of people.
03:32I got to imagine that it's rare.
03:34You know what I mean?
03:35Like,
03:36I don't know where there are people in the bears organization that were
03:38like,
03:38Hey boss,
03:39Jaden Daniels.
03:40Like,
03:41I don't know.
03:42You know what I mean?
03:43Like,
03:43I,
03:43I,
03:43I don't know.
03:44I don't know.
03:45So is it fully Joe Lacob's fault?
03:48I,
03:48I,
03:48I don't know that he went out and just made this decision by himself.
03:52I don't,
03:53I don't necessarily think that's the case.
03:55I get where Ed is coming from,
03:58but I'd also answer it this way.
03:59And I think you're with me on this.
04:01I'd be very,
04:02very surprised at this hour,
04:03if this ends up on the qualifying offer,
04:05I'd be stunned.
04:06That would be,
04:07I've always thought it was a bad idea.
04:09And then the comments from Aaron Turner today would suggest that they agree
04:12that it'd be a very bad idea.
04:14Right.
04:15And the team doesn't want that either,
04:16because then it's a guy who's not happy playing for 7.9 million.
04:21And even if you get to the,
04:23to the spot where you could trade him and he'd have to,
04:26okay,
04:26a trade.
04:27So now the warriors find a team that will take Kaminga and Kaminga agrees to
04:31be dealt before the deadline.
04:33And you get 8 million back worth of player.
04:35And if you want to look at the list of guys who make about that much,
04:39you're not going to get a difference maker.
04:40You're not going to get a player who was as good as Kaminga.
04:44Kaminga making 7.9.
04:46He'll probably be the best player in the league making less than $8 million.
04:49For sure.
04:50Outside of maybe a rookie,
04:51you know,
04:52somebody on a rookie deal.
04:53I don't even know what Wemby makes,
04:55but it's probably not a ton because that's the way you get slotted in the
04:59association.
05:00So the team doesn't want it.
05:02He doesn't want it.
05:03They're going to have to find a way to figure this out.
05:06And the only figuring it out,
05:08I think from the warrior side is come on in and you can take the two year
05:12contract.
05:13We hold the option.
05:14You can take the three year contract.
05:17We hold the option or,
05:18or what?
05:19Guys.
05:20Cause we're not,
05:20we're not doing,
05:21we're not doing the player option.
05:23So nor should they,
05:25they shouldn't.
05:26Well,
05:26especially if you're looking to trade him.
05:28And if we can just take the,
05:30the premise that if he signs,
05:32when he signs that both sides are going to look to trade him,
05:36like Kaminga is going to work on finding a team and they're going to work on
05:39getting them out.
05:40Then the warriors need to have that number be big and the contract be ironclad
05:47to where Kaminga,
05:48if he's acquired has to be that team's player.
05:51The number is commensurate with what the other teams put on the table in front
05:56of him as well.
05:57So maybe it had another year on it or something,
06:00but this is,
06:01this is about what the sons were reportedly offering.
06:04This is about what the Kings are reportedly offering.
06:07We've arrived at a spot where it sounds to us.
06:11And I think Aaron Turner,
06:12he confirmed all of this.
06:14You're,
06:15you're going to turn down.
06:16And again,
06:16I'll just go with the guarantees.
06:18You're going to turn down essentially $50 million and instead take eight
06:23solely so that there is a player option in the third year,
06:29which means you get to potentially be a free agent two seasons from now,
06:35a year earlier than what you would anyway.
06:39And the fear there is that you might get traded somewhere.
06:43You don't want to go odd to me.
06:46That's an odd request.
06:47You already seemingly want to be anywhere that will play you.
06:51It's not like the Kings and sons are just banner organizations who are crushing
06:56it right now.
06:57Aren't they like they're both dumpster fires and you want to be there.
07:01So what do why,
07:03why is Charlotte so scary?
07:05Why is Washington in new Orleans?
07:07So scary.
07:07I don't think anything is so scary,
07:09but he wants to be able to have the control.
07:11Well,
07:11but he wants to call the shot.
07:13You don't get it.
07:13Well,
07:14he couldn't after a year,
07:15he gets it.
07:16Right.
07:16But the,
07:16that it,
07:17here's the control will cost you $42 million.
07:22Well,
07:22potentially you could go out there and sign a free agent deal and immediately
07:27recoup it.
07:27And you're assuming that if he plays on the qualifying offer for 7.9,
07:32then he's going to go out and not get a penny.
07:34He's going to get something.
07:36So you're not costing the guaranteed,
07:38but he'd be getting the guaranteed money.
07:40Perhaps.
07:41But if you play on the qualifying offer and you think that there are five or
07:45six teams out there that they want you.
07:48And that's what the agent was saying today.
07:49He's like,
07:49yeah,
07:50we've had conversations with Sacramento and Phoenix and there's other teams
07:53also that we've talked to because he's a free agent.
07:56He's allowed to restricted,
07:58but he's allowed to talk to teams.
08:00I'm sure the agent has canvassed the league and they figured out what is
08:04possibly going to be out there after a year.
08:05Aaron Turner agent for Jonathan Kaminga was asked what matters more for
08:11Jonathan going forward,
08:12money or his role.
08:14I think it's clear.
08:15I mean,
08:15if he could prioritize,
08:17it's the role,
08:18but that's not really existent right now,
08:21right?
08:21Like you can't,
08:21you can only get the role on the place that you can get to.
08:24And right now you can't get to those spots.
08:25So yes.
08:26I mean,
08:26I think the fact that,
08:27you know,
08:28he he's very open-minded to Sacramento to Phoenix and some of the other
08:33teams that we've talked to says that.
08:35I mean,
08:36he wants a bigger role.
08:37No one's hiding from that.
08:38He's he's not hiding from that,
08:40but on any great team,
08:41right?
08:42Somebody has to sacrifice.
08:44It's a hundred percent needed to win at the highest level.
08:47And sometimes you got to do stuff you don't want to do,
08:49or necessarily,
08:50you know,
08:50put your personal agenda behind you to win.
08:54So I think,
08:55you know,
08:55the role would be the coveted thing for him,
08:58but that's just,
08:59you know,
08:59at this moment,
09:00not an option.
09:01Aaron Turner joining us on.
09:02Unless the Warriors do one of these two sign and trade.
09:04Sorry.
09:04Right.
09:04Right now.
09:06It's just not.
09:06Yeah.
09:07Okay.
09:07Unless they do one of the two sign and trade options,
09:09which feel dormant.
09:12Completely.
09:12The Kings and son stuff.
09:13I'm just looking at the,
09:14uh,
09:15the Kings offered three years between 63 and 66.
09:19This offers better.
09:20Phoenix was reportedly four years between 80 and 88 million.
09:24This offers better.
09:25In terms of AAV.
09:26Those are fully guaranteed.
09:28Correct.
09:28So one would be between 20 and 22 a year.
09:31The other one would be between 21 and 22 a year.
09:34And the Warriors are offering roughly 25 a year,
09:37but the caveat being they want the team option for the third year.
09:41So Stiney asked Aaron Turner,
09:42like point blank,
09:44like really you could turn down like that amount of money over,
09:49over this argument to take a qualifying offer.
09:52Listen to the answer.
09:53It's a lot of money.
09:54Don't,
09:55don't get me wrong.
09:55But if you know JK,
09:57he's somebody that,
09:57um,
09:58you know,
09:59he's,
09:59he has principle,
10:00right.
10:00He's very grounded in who he is.
10:02And,
10:03you know,
10:03we've gone over the risk of the qualifying offer.
10:06I mean,
10:06it's a nauseam at this point in the summer.
10:08We've looked at it,
10:09you know,
10:09we have,
10:09I like to think a pretty smart group around them.
10:12We've,
10:12you know,
10:12got some insurance policies that hedge out a lot of the risk.
10:15Um,
10:16we're not very worried about the on court play where,
10:18you know,
10:19we'd be more worried to just keep them healthy.
10:20So we've been able to hedge out,
10:22you know,
10:22with some insurance policies that'll definitely help.
10:24If we had to go down that route,
10:26as far as would you lose money this year?
10:28Yeah.
10:28Would you lose money next year?
10:29Probably.
10:30But if you go where you want and you are the player,
10:33you think you're going to be JK,
10:35then yeah.
10:36In 10 years from now,
10:37five years from now,
10:38we could say that's the best decision you ever made.
10:40You know,
10:40if you want the upside to choose your spot where you feel great,
10:45you're going to have to probably take some risks,
10:47but that's how it works,
10:48right?
10:48Like risk reward.
10:50And I'm not,
10:50JK is not risk averse.
10:52I mean,
10:52if you know the backstory of him,
10:53I mean,
10:53he came over here when he was a kid,
10:55didn't see his parents for six years and coming over from the Congo.
10:58Like this is a guy that believes in himself and bet on himself every step of
11:01the way.
11:01So to say,
11:02you know,
11:03now he's going to change at this point.
11:04I don't,
11:05is that going to happen?
11:06I don't think so.
11:06I thought this was Aaron Turner's best moment,
11:09quite frankly,
11:09in this 17 hour conversation.
11:12I thought that was his best moment because that's where I will agree.
11:16And it's not what,
11:17for me,
11:17that's not about Kaminga.
11:18That's about any human being out there.
11:20Like there's absolutely no price on your happiness and,
11:23and the peace of mind.
11:25So if that's what you want,
11:26because here's what I would say to Jonathan,
11:28if that's what really,
11:30really makes you tick.
11:31Okay.
11:32If you have the utmost confidence in yourself and you know,
11:37you're going to be that dude,
11:38you're going to be an all-star player in this league.
11:40And you just need some schmuck to get out of your way and give you 37 minutes a
11:47night.
11:47If that's all this is about,
11:49well then do it,
11:51do it.
11:53Take the QO.
11:54I don't think the Warriors are getting in your way.
11:56In fact,
11:56they can't,
11:57they legally can't.
11:59Right.
11:59So do it.
11:59And they,
12:00why are you going to play him?
12:02If he's still here because,
12:03and he talked about eating minutes,
12:05you know,
12:05coming is a guy who he's eating minutes and he's young.
12:08And so,
12:08yeah,
12:09they will play him and yeah.
12:11Come on back for 7.9.
12:13Bet on yourself.
12:14I also thought it was interesting that he talked about hedging out with some
12:17insurance policies.
12:18I wonder what,
12:19uh,
12:20what the,
12:21the amount would be that you could hedge out.
12:24Like you got a policy for 20 million against injury.
12:26Right.
12:27I don't know.
12:27I don't know.
12:28I have no idea what the number would be or what it would cost or,
12:31or all of those things.
12:32The premium would be bananas.
12:35Right.
12:36Um,
12:37but then,
12:37uh,
12:38then this conversation goes on and here's more from Turner with regard to
12:43Kaminga and the qualifying offer.
12:45Do we want to take the QO?
12:47No,
12:47nobody wants to take the QO.
12:48I don't think we would be blind.
12:50If I said,
12:51that's ideal.
12:52The hope is,
12:52you know,
12:53we can get something figured out,
12:54but,
12:54um,
12:54if he does take it,
12:56it'll it's,
12:57it's not going to be a good feeling for him.
13:00Um,
13:01you know,
13:01with the fact that he actually puts that pen to paper on October 1st,
13:04it's not something that he is going to be very happy that we got to that
13:08situation,
13:08um,
13:09and had to do that.
13:10Um,
13:10so,
13:11you know,
13:12I think,
13:12uh,
13:13I think it's a possibility.
13:14It's not something we want to do,
13:15but,
13:15you know,
13:16look,
13:16it's hard for me as his agent,
13:18you know,
13:18I'm,
13:19I'm looking for a deal where I can,
13:20you know,
13:20and I think the player option does that where I can stand on the table
13:23and say,
13:23we're taking this deal.
13:24You know what I mean?
13:24There's,
13:25there's nothing to talk about.
13:26We're taking this deal,
13:27but with what's on the table right now,
13:29you know,
13:29I have to be a little more,
13:31you know,
13:31respective of JK,
13:33you know,
13:33and,
13:33and his understanding.
13:34And if he wants to stand,
13:35you know,
13:36to a degree on like,
13:37Hey,
13:37you know,
13:37I think it's fair that,
13:39um,
13:40we don't do this deal.
13:41Then I have to,
13:43I understand it.
13:44You know,
13:44I,
13:44I do.
13:45I don't think it's at a point where if his principle is,
13:47I don't think this is fair to me.
13:50I kind of have to respect that.
13:51Okay.
13:52So there were moments where I did feel like Aaron Turner.
13:55I don't think he meant to do this.
13:56I'm not trying to make this all like real housewives or something like that,
14:00but there were moments where it sounded like veiled threats were being made.
14:05If you,
14:05if you do this,
14:06Jonathan will,
14:07he'll sign,
14:08but he'll be,
14:09he'll be disgruntled and he will,
14:11he will be mad.
14:12Sure.
14:13He will.
14:13He will.
14:13And then I don't think that's going to go well.
14:15It's not like there were moments I'm,
14:17I'm paraphrasing.
14:18There were moments where I felt like these were veiled threats at the
14:24organization of,
14:25if you don't blink,
14:26if you don't give us a player option,
14:29well,
14:29then we're forced to take the qualifying offer and you're going to get a
14:32puddle of anger.
14:34Oh yeah.
14:34To show up in your clubhouse.
14:36Okay.
14:36Yeah.
14:36And then that could be seen as a,
14:38as a veiled threat all you want,
14:40but it's like,
14:41it won't work with Joe Lake,
14:42by the way,
14:43why would it work?
14:44Like,
14:44why would you all of a sudden capitulate?
14:47And it reminds me of my sister when she would threaten to run away from
14:51home and she would,
14:53and usually she'd be back by dinner.
14:55And she did this over and over and over.
14:57And it got to the point where it was like,
14:59it was comedy.
15:00She'd get mad at my parents and that's it.
15:03I'm leaving.
15:03And I would be on the floor just,
15:05you know,
15:05busting a gut,
15:06but it's like,
15:06it's a veiled threat.
15:08Okay.
15:09You run away from home and then we'll see how that goes for you.
15:12So coming is going to be really upset playing for 7.9 million on the
15:16qualifying offer.
15:17Okay.
15:18Go to your room,
15:19be upset and you'll cry into your pillow and we'll go out here and try to
15:23play basketball.
15:24I get the sense,
15:24uh,
15:25based on some conversations I've had,
15:27the,
15:27the warriors are sure.
15:28This whole thing has been frustrating.
15:29I'm not going to say the warriors aren't frustrated.
15:31Annoying.
15:32Yeah.
15:32But I think that they've arrived,
15:33especially since they did add another year,
15:35I think they've arrived at a spot where they're like,
15:37dude,
15:37we're here.
15:38We're like,
15:39you're going to have to do one of these.
15:40And if it's a qualifying offer,
15:41then it's the qualifying offer.
15:43No,
15:44no,
15:44we don't want that either.
15:45You don't want that.
15:46We don't want that.
15:47But,
15:47um,
15:48for everybody out there who thinks that Joe Lacob is so enamored with
15:52Jonathan Kaminga,
15:53that he's treating this in this most humanized sort of way.
15:58That ain't how business minds think he is treating this like business and
16:03he believes,
16:04and he's correct that this is an incredibly fair deal commensurate with the
16:09market value.
16:10Please don't forget.
16:11Nobody has offered him this much money per year.
16:14Nobody else.
16:15Number one.
16:16Number two,
16:16no money out there.
16:17So that,
16:17you know,
16:18that's circumstantial in many ways,
16:20but you could also make it happen with a sign in trade.
16:22And I pointed that out that those,
16:24those values are lower than what they're offering.
16:26And nobody,
16:27nobody out there has been willing to offer the warriors,
16:29this amazing set of players or assets,
16:33because they're dying to get their hands on Jonathan.
16:36That didn't happen.
16:39Don't forget.
16:40He's coming off of his worst statistical year of his career.
16:44I know injury,
16:46Jimmy,
16:47all of that.
16:48Bottom line business.
16:50Your numbers are going down.
16:52They went down.
16:54What,
16:54what are the warriors supposed to do with that?
16:56Act like those numbers aren't there.
16:58Like you can believe,
17:01I love people who believe in themselves.
17:02It's great,
17:03but you're not going to convince a company to ignore data based on your
17:09personal belief.
17:11Let's go to Barry in Burlingame.
17:13Hi,
17:13Barry.
17:13Thanks for calling.
17:15Hey guys.
17:16Happy Friday.
17:17I did a little research on that.
17:21I worked in the insurance industry a long time ago,
17:23and I was curious about what that product actually is and what it looks
17:28like.
17:29And apparently you can go to a broker and you can say,
17:33Hey,
17:34I want to protect myself against what I might lose,
17:38which in,
17:39in coming his case,
17:41I think would mean he plays on the one year qualifying offer.
17:46He's injured during that season,
17:49which ruins his free agent financial prospects.
17:55And I think the way it works is,
17:58is that you simply negotiate the number you think you're worth.
18:02So just to use round numbers,
18:03let's say 15 million bucks.
18:06And then they tell you how much it costs.
18:08And then if you agree to pay that,
18:11then if that consequence occurs,
18:15then you get the 15 mil,
18:18which for him would be the security blanket,
18:21right?
18:21If he had to sit out a year or,
18:23or if his value on the open market went way down,
18:26but I think though that the triggering event and I don't want to do insurance
18:31one-on-one here,
18:31there's another point that I wanted to ask you guys about,
18:33but I think that it has to be a specific outcome.
18:37Like you tear your ACL or something like that.
18:40Yeah.
18:40It might.
18:41Yeah.
18:41Hey,
18:41Barry,
18:41thanks so much.
18:43It's very interesting.
18:44But Oh,
18:44by the way,
18:45also means if that insurance policy is expensive and he doesn't get hurt,
18:49that's another portion of the $8 million.
18:51Right.
18:52Unless the agent's paying for it.
18:53I'm sure the agent would pick that up.
18:54You know,
18:54I have no idea who have these.
18:56Oh,
18:56you.
