02:12Hello designers
02:14As all stars you all know that Project Runway has a lot of fans
02:19So we've asked the fans to take part in the first interactive challenge ever
02:26Wow
02:28So Joanna Coles is waiting for you in the workroom to explain everything
02:32And i'll see you back here tomorrow for the runway
02:35Good luck
02:37Thank you
02:47I want to introduce you to Sandra Misik
02:50Who is the senior vice president of marketing for USA Today
02:55One of the nation's leading news organizations
02:59So at USA Today we pioneered visual storytelling and infographics
03:04And we continue to be at the forefront of clear and concise visually driven storytelling and journalism
03:11And in publishing we have a saying every picture tells a story
03:17So that's the theme of this week's challenge
03:19We went out to all your fans and asked them to tweet us inspiring pictures
03:29We received thousands
03:32And your job is to take one of those pictures and turn it into a fashion design perfect for the runway
03:42It's an interactive collaboration
03:45So i think this challenge is going to be a really intriguing and interesting challenge
03:49It's really amazing that the fans are getting involved with this because i know how much this means to them
03:54So hopefully i can make the fans proud
03:56Think about what is the headline that you want to communicate with your look
04:00So two desktop computers courtesy of hp have been set up in the lounge for you emilio
04:09Congratulations you won last week's challenge
04:11Thank you
04:12So you get to pick who you would like to select a photo with you first
04:17I'm going to pick casanova
04:21Casanova doesn't have ulterior motives
04:24He's open to everyone he likes everyone
04:27But before you get started sandra has a surprise for you
04:32The winning designer and look will be featured with a photograph and an editorial piece in usa today
04:39wow that's that's a good surprise fantastic good luck i'm really hoping that i win this one because the prize is amazing
04:48It'll be on every doorstep right under your door in your hotel and also online it's enormous for a young designer
04:55Good luck designers see you later
04:57Bye
05:03I came upon sophie from california i'm choosing this picture because i have nieces her age and that's an innocence that i think we lose in fashion
05:13Okay i already have mine it's for me a fusion in between
05:18Feminine and masculine at the same time that's kind of cool
05:21Mira yo te escogí a ti tu
05:26Ivy next
05:27Althea next
05:33Well it's from the uk and it looks like a train station to me so that really spoke to me it's just the colors and the shape and it's reminding me of when my
05:42husband proposed to me in a train station
05:45I decided to choose this photo because i believe a butterfly represents evolution and change
05:50I try every day to grow as a person
05:58What i love about this picture is that it is all vintage jewelry
06:03So the picture that i choose is shot out of an airplane and you see the clouds and the sun and the blue sky
06:09It makes me feel free and peaceful joshua anthony ryan
06:15Thank you
06:17So i'm looking around like what the hell nobody likes me here or people are thinking like oh
06:22She has everything let's not give her anything else seems like everyone that's left here
06:27She's offended in one way or another are you having a mean streak ivy how am i being mean
06:32You were just laughing i can't laugh if there's something that's not funny
06:37Yep they want me to like talk to them like we came from the same place it's not gonna happen
06:42Laura i choose you
06:49I come across this picture from debra from alabama and she has this rather forlorn look on her face
06:56And i thought you look so sad and i thought boy i'm kind of sad too because i'm you know the last picked again
07:02Let's go
07:03sketchy sketchy
07:10So this is my picture it really just spoke to me because it almost has a way of
07:15Past crossing and the different choices that you could make that could change your path of life
07:21The person that took my photo is kevin from massachusetts i think this is really beautiful
07:25The movement of water is really interesting and the way that water reacts to a single drop
07:31I know that i'm going to do something that's fluid it has to resemble water so immediately silk charmeuse
07:37This is the first time in this competition that i'm not doing the dress
07:40I want to put a stamp on these judges minds like i haven't even talked to them yet
07:44That's why to me it's imperative that i'm in the top for this challenge
07:47I'm designing a dress she has an all-american quality to her which is young and fresh i think
07:56What i've designed so far has been very bold and now i'm going to show my softer side okay guys time
08:02To head to moon don't forget your pictures i'm excited about this one
08:07I'm making these modular nets that can be combined in different ways kind of like a tinker toy set of fashion
08:31The colors i'd like two yards the black i'd like three ten minutes everyone thank you
08:38Why would someone take this photo and i think it's truly the colors i thought that i would be true to kevin and his photo
08:44And really match the colors perfectly i think it's something of this tone
08:50Time's up designers that's it got it
08:54Good luck everyone thank you
09:04Let's do this guys
09:06Pressure is up so high because we only have one day to complete this challenge
09:12Everyone has their own sewing machine so keep that in mind
09:17Okay i'm right behind you because this is all stars it seems very very intense like we're already
09:23Competing for the final three so i was on the bottom last week and this challenge i want to rise to the top
09:29i definitely consider myself a separates designer however i think this is unique for me because i'm pushing it more than i normally would
09:39I'm making a silk charmeuse gown and i'm going to create my own print to resemble water
09:45i need a drink i have like a stiff drink i'm trying to deal with the other designers personalities everybody
09:51Being like oh my god the whole privilege thing and i have this really vulnerable feeling i get that there are people
09:57Here that are not sincere and they're not wanting to be friends that's fine then we won't be friends we have different lives
10:03it's new people that don't understand you and as much as i
10:07Try to do this and not hear what other people are saying i still hear what they say
10:13I think laura needs to be more careful and soft with the way she says things because sometimes they can come off very harsh
10:22It's been difficult when people here don't understand me and i can't say a word about my own home life because they just want to be like
10:27Well isn't that peachy if you let every
10:30Person in here affect you you won't be capable of your best work
10:34Coming up on project runway all stars the pressure's on you actually seem a bit emotional today. It's very personal
10:45I'm surprised you haven't won a challenge yet. I might be an outsider where i keep all of my precious things
10:51This challenge is an interactive challenge
11:05Project runway fans around the world tweeted images and we're to select an image and be inspired to create a garment
11:14I think it definitely will be a little bit more difficult for the judges to judge this challenge because it is so arbitrary
11:21I mean what's important is to make sure that your inspiration story and the photo correlate with your design
11:28I think this is a great challenge for all of us
11:31The first thing i start working on is the top that i'm creating because i realized that you know the linear lines of the design
11:38Is going to be extremely time consuming and i want to make sure that it's done right
11:42The pressure's on but any type of stress or panic that i have i can just push it out
11:57I might be an outsider i'm reluctant to believe that i'm an outsider but i think i am
12:02I seem to have so little in common with these people i've created a second level of desk underneath my desk
12:09Where i keep all of my precious things
12:13Andre to me is golem from lord of the rings because he reminds me of that weird creature
12:19Andre is a great guy but i don't see him as a designer i see him at the personality
12:25Let's say something i'm jolton exactly
12:30Designers hello
12:33This is such a talented room and i just want to remind you this is all stars you all have what it takes to be a great designer
12:43Do you have what it takes to win this competition i'm thrilled to be joined by usa today's style editor
12:51Alison maxwell and we are now going to come around together and help you with your designs
12:57Andre so do you have your photograph i do i do this is deborah from alabama my response is modular
13:04Knits panels of fabric with zippers that came that are kind of interchangeable so you sort of make your own t-shirt
13:11Almost like strapping in your own panels or zipping them in when you feel like it i can't decide if it's bonkers or brilliant
13:18i think it's bonkers and brilliant but brilliantly so yes big shocker andre's doing something wackadoo
13:25i mean i think we're used to it by now
13:29hi oh hi laura kathleen hi tell us about your picture what spoke to you about it what spoke to me was um
13:38vulnerability i loved the look of it obviously but then it also gave a little emotion you actually seem
13:45a bit emotional today you know just the dynamics i think as the competition goes it gets more serious
13:51and you know tensions are higher this is beautiful when do people wear long gowns i wear long gowns
13:57everywhere i go why do i not find that surprising when was the last time you wore a long gown
14:02while ago yeah so i think it's really important to focus on something that
14:07you know everyone can wear sure good all right good luck with it laura kathleen thank you i appreciate it
14:12you know i'm not going to lie to you i'm not trying to make clothes that are accessible to like
14:16the farmers of america i'm trying to make clothes that are fashion forward and progressive
14:23emilio hello congratulations on last week's triumph yay finally tell us a little bit about the picture
14:31to sophie from california and i loved her attitude so what i created is a simple t-shirt dress what's the
14:40headline sophie's choice i'm not sure about that headline we do have to remember what sophie's
14:46choice refers to so we don't want to go i remember the meryl streep and how deep it was so you're
14:50right maybe i just played on the name okay but thank you for the tip good luck okay hi ladies hi joshua
14:58so talk to us about this i wanted to be true to the colors and work with this color palette so i'm working
15:04with a very structured shirt i want you to pay attention up here that it doesn't end up looking
15:10too arts and craftsy okay josh's look it's um it's disheartening because i know that he's better
15:16than what he's doing one of the things we always say at usa today is when you're looking at a design
15:22you want to look at it and feel it and in looking at the picture and what you have going so far
15:26i think it's perfect thank you i think you have to be careful with black lace and red it can read
15:33very hookery i actually like these pants i'm just nervous first of all those hats are making me crazy
15:40what i'm doing is to add some masculine elements you don't really realize that a caterpillar can turn
15:46into something as beautiful as a butterfly i feel like as human beings we always try to evolve into
15:51better people i think you are finding a real energy in this season i feel like you've found a place
15:58where you feel strong thank you i appreciate that right good luck ivy thank you thanks hey anthony ryan
16:04how are you i'm great how are you good so where's your photo let's uh take a look right here this is from
16:10diane from new york okay and what was the headline you pulled from the photo um always moving forward
16:16it's very personal i was diagnosed with cancer and that whole time i was doing chemo i maintained
16:23a full school schedule because doing this is what really brought me a positive outlook designing and
16:28fashion that was who i relied on when i had cancer it wasn't family or friends or doctors it was myself
16:37and designing life is really about second chances and i'm gonna make the best of it well i'm looking
16:43forward to seeing the skirt thank you i think it looks great yeah good start thank you so much
16:48althea hi how are you hi tell us a little bit about your photo i love the color combination i love
16:54the tone when i look at this picture i see lots of light i'm not seeing the taupe which is your dominant
17:01color i felt like if i went too much in the direction of a lighter color and all of the draping it might just
17:08start to go away from that classic element of a suit i'm glad you're stretching yourself by doing a
17:14trouser suit i wonder if it's as special as the photo althea's picture is very architectural so she's
17:24going to definitely have to step it up on the fit of her garment this time i would just like to say when
17:29you guys picked your pictures there was probably some emotion you were feeling i want you to make sure
17:34that that emotion translates into your final product thank you thanks okay good luck guys
17:45i'm more just like i want to make sure that it looks like amazing i decided to do a little bit of
17:50a drape in a pant just because it's something different i'm here to take a risk this is all
17:55stars let's just try it on and see how it says her name is sophie i know she's all done let me put
18:04some shoes let's try those althea's design i don't know what woman would want to wear something that
18:11and flattering there's gonna be like a drape front on top kane has bad taste and at this point in the
18:18competition nothing can help change or fix kane's aesthetic it gets really boring i just gotta really
18:24press it i think with the time constraints i bit off more than i could chew i'm like boo boo you have
18:30got to hurry up i know i'm not just the only one we're all scrambling
18:3910 minutes everyone 10 minutes the skirt is five yards of fabric that's what gives it a poofiness
18:47and then i have to line it a lot torture
18:51okay guys that's a wrap let's go home come on
19:08in the end you're here to show what you can do i'm here for that you're here for that any kind of drama
19:13or that kind of thing around it i just i don't really want to be a part of you know you just
19:17really have to stay focused on the design you know that's going to get you through right so cheers
19:22girl to great design cheers coming up on project runway all stars
19:32the morning the runway i don't have enough time i don't have enough fabric oh no i'm not even ready
19:36for you joshua's look reminds me of rainbow bright i wouldn't really see anyone over the age of 20 wearing
19:42that garment
19:47it's important to have a challenge like this because we actually get to draw inspiration from
19:57the fans they're the people that are coming back wanting to see what i'm going to be designing next
20:02so many clothes andre is crazy as a loon he is constantly thinking 10 steps ahead but as far as
20:10time maintenance it's a miracle he pulls anything out
20:13i'm pushing myself because the level of work is elevated i'm competing to do the best i can and to win
20:24all right
20:27hey
20:29oh no i'm not even ready for you to put it on yet so okay i'd like to see althea push herself a little
20:34bit more you know she hasn't been in the top or the bottom so it's hard to get a read on what they're
20:39thinking about her there are moments where you feel the pressure you know when something's not
20:45finished or ready the day of a runway show but that's the industry
20:49good morning oh good morning how about red orange lit and laura mercier mascara
21:04i want her to look very fresh sheen here and then the rest of that great copper bronze with like a
21:09nice glow and strong eyebrows tight tight tight not a pony it's got to be a pony i'm thinking center
21:17park do you agree center park maybe something like that love it guys we have 30 minutes
21:26flawless no casanova is a quick little monster that little bugger knows how to sell a pair of hands in
21:31like 30 minutes i do love althea's look the jacket beautiful but i think the execution of the pants
21:38was sloppy don't fluff it behind the screen no no no no okay emilio's dress is so bold it's so out there
21:46i love it these challenges are super difficult and i've put a lot of emotion into my design and made
21:53it very personal so i really hope the judges see that can't make this parisian prostitute with a
21:59chicken in the head terrible oh deborah from alabama what's going on in this photo i wonder if deborah
22:09is like me another creative spirit trying to get their work out into the public guys time to walk
22:18line up pack your bags get your girl it was not fitting because it was too tight thank god for a
22:24laughter joshua's look to me reminds me of rainbow bright i wouldn't really see anyone over the age
22:30of 20 wearing that garment i just don't think that it's chic going into this runway i'm trying to be as
22:38happy as i can about this look but it's very nerve-wracking coming up on project runway all stars there's too
22:49much to think about it just feels costumey for me like it looks like a wound i would look like a chinese
22:55lantern in that thing when you go up against the best that's divine make sure you have flavor keep what
23:09good evening designers hi this week's challenge was truly for the fans
23:15we joined forces with usa today for the first ever interactive challenge the project runway fans
23:22tweeted us their photos they came in from all over the country in fact we even heard from fans in spain
23:29indonesia saudi arabia australia and russia wow your challenge was to turn a picture into a fashion story
23:38on the runway let's meet the judges first the designer and co-founder of marquesa the beautiful georgina
23:46chapman hi designer and one of the most famous names in fashion designer isaac mizarahi hi designers
23:59our first guest is one of the biggest sensations in the fashion world
24:03her fashion blog called style rookie is one of the most influential blogs in the fashion business
24:10and she's still only 16. oh my gosh the style rookie herself tavi gevinson
24:20our next guest is leading the new generation of women's wear designers
24:25her fashion forward clothing and accessories have been worn by kate moss blake lively and rihanna one of the
24:32coolest designers out there charlotte ronson
24:39the winning designer and their look will receive a photo and interview story in usa today
24:45so let's find out who's going to make the headlines have a good show thank you
24:49yeah
24:53i think my dress looks badass i am on cloud nine
24:58i think the fabric is moving very fluid the print looks amazing i have worked to prove myself to
25:14anybody that has doubted
25:16you can see how comfortable she is and how happy she is with the look
25:22she looks great and i'm thinking wow this is really working this is good this is exuberant and happy and
25:29clean and there's a ton of whimsy and she has great hair
25:34it's kind of harmonious you can see how comfortable she is and how happy she is with the look you can feel it
25:46i love how she looks in the suit i think the suit has great movements it's tailored very nicely to her figure
26:01it would turn my head and i'd you know be like who designed that i want one
26:04i'm capable of designing clothing that people will love all i'm thinking to myself is i don't even have
26:16a shot in hell at winning this so god please don't let me go home on this
26:27i think the dress looks stunning i love it on the girl but i'm a little worried because it's not a bright
26:34color
26:43this really does mean a lot to me because this is a huge opportunity to show our work on a national
26:49scale so i'm more motivated than ever to win this competition
26:52i love creating something different and i'm like ba bam it's bold it's fresh it stands out from the rest of
27:06them it's exciting
27:13my model looks hot strong confident beautiful in command
27:19designers
27:33if i call your name please step forward
27:35laura kathleen andre joshua anthony ryan emilio althea if i called your name one of you has this
27:53week's highest score and will be the winner and unfortunately another has the lowest and will be eliminated
28:01the rest of you congratulations you are safe thank you you may leave the runway
28:14designers let's bring out your models
28:16althea how did you pick your photo the photo really spoke to me because i like the idea that
28:29even though it's this really old glamorous building how they've kind of been able to reuse
28:33it for a very modern purpose you succeed in so many ways but somehow the pants i'm not getting at
28:39all i think like the expected thing to do would be like a skinny pant with this jacket so i wanted
28:43to push it and do something different so what's that sort of pocket in the front side this year
28:48that's a drape it doesn't drape enough or it drapes too much or something it looks like a wound
28:54i like the way that you reference the photo in the colors but overall i think it's a bit drab
29:00i like the idea of like a deconstructed job perk pant but we see this look from givanshi and so it's
29:07got to be so spot on yeah i think the jacket is done really nicely and all the details and i like
29:13how you took a victorian feel to make it modern but the trousers do kind of throw me off i like how
29:19you talk about the photo and how you are interested in this old building being used in these new modern
29:26ways and i'm a drop crotch apologist and i really like that you like did it but i wish that there had
29:32been something more interesting with the jacket or with the color of the top underneath
29:37thank you anthony ryan essentially in the photograph it was really all about not looking
29:42back it was always moving forward i love looking at the photograph and looking at the dress and how
29:48they reference each other could you turn around because all those straps on the back are so great
29:54for a dress that might be too sexy it's not too sexy thank you you have such a graphic quality to
30:00what you do my criticism to you today anthony is that i've seen these colors from you and i've seen
30:05this dress from you right i'd like you just take a bit of a risk next time i agree with georgina that
30:10you could take more risks but i'm really happy in looking at this dress thank you i like how it's
30:15like a little bit of a mock to the neck makes it a little bit more conservative and i also like that
30:20it's a longer length too i think you did a really good job of capturing both the spirit of the photo but
30:26also the spirit of the kind of woman who chose that photo and i just love so much how that's reflected in
30:32both the sheer in front and all the straps in the back so yeah i like it joshua so the photo i chose
30:39really spoke to me and i love how linear it is but at the same time there's something that's so fluid
30:45about it it just feels a touch costuming when i see your picture the colors bleed into one another
30:51i wanted to see something more organic i love the idea of color but for some reason i feel like in this
30:58design there's too much to think about if that was all gray and black we probably would have liked it
31:03a lot more it's hard for me to really like the two pieces together but it's also hard for me to imagine
31:10them working with other parts of someone's wardrobe so andre why did you choose this photo it's a photo
31:19of a woman from alabama looking off to the side slightly forlorn so this is my response euphoric
31:26modular knits panels of stretch fabric but they have separating zippers that you can combine
31:31as you wish i don't get anything forlorn or what forlorn has to do with anything i had no idea
31:37that it was about zipping together panels part of the idea that i thought would be so wonderful
31:42is if this was a spread in usa today the actual article could be the pattern oh interesting
31:48interesting maybe i'll get through to you oh dear i'm sorry i'm sorry andre when you're using a
31:54stretch fabric and a zipper what happens is the zipper is stiff and it's going to buckle
31:59and it's taking away your idea of having the illusion of a slimming waist through color blocking
32:05which is a great idea i mean i like the punch of colors i just think if you had more time it would
32:11have been a little more successful if only laura kathleen i was really happy to get my picture it is a
32:19droplet of water hitting a clean surface of water and so i got ivory and i actually died to this and
32:25made the print this is really good as a dress and then when you see that it's inspired by that
32:31photograph you go oh right it's wonderful thank you i like that you had to diet yourself because
32:37i really love that it captures the mood of the photo without directly referencing what it's of
32:44overall i think you did a great job and i love this dress all the more now i know you did that
32:49print yourself thank you if you're going to do a long skirt i really would have loved to see in the
32:53bottom of the dress touch the floor it's a commitment to long skirt and i always think it needs to go all
32:58the way it just really stood out for me and it is very organic and i think it's really really beautiful
33:04and i would wear this i'd love for you emilio my photo is from a young girl from california named sophie
33:12because it reminded me of the fantasy of fashion and i wanted to create a dress that had a fantasy
33:19element to it it's light as a feather your girl looks totally modern to me just was like this one
33:25fresh idea it's definitely a harder dress to wear and the shape could probably have been pushed out a
33:32little bit more and bigger but i i think it's fun i think it's playful yes thank you i absolutely love
33:38your inspiration i'm in love with her i mean she's so sweet you know what your dress evokes that emotion
33:45it makes you smile it has a wink to it and i love that creativity and the way you've stepped away from
33:51i don't know the zeitgeist of everybody else here thank you very much thank you designers you've given us
33:57a lot to think about so we're going to have our chat and we'll call you back
34:13so what did they say i'm on the bottom and they didn't like the color of the suit clearly they want
34:19a bright runway with that said then you know mine was so bright and they're like if you do that on
34:24monochromatic scale it could be really great i think they expect color and if you don't use color
34:29you should have a really good reason why you're not yeah i mean i guess we could start with the
34:34high scores there we saw some standouts anthony did a pitch perfect dress portions were fantastic
34:41his balance is great the great thing is that we know who that woman is she's sexy she's in control
34:47there's always invention he actually gets it right i think he did a great job but at the same time the
34:53back part is like almost too low there were so many bodycon dresses but it was the only one where
35:00i didn't immediately feel like skin was being shown and i like that he plays around with that i think
35:06that he knows he's playing around with something it's an actual intention
35:12talk about laura kathleen i do love that she created something with these panels in front that had a bit
35:19of originality laura kathleen did an amazing job dying that fabric and props to her for for doing
35:25that she played up the fact that she did create that fabric and that being said it's what made it
35:30interesting but really when that dress walked it wasn't like wow i liked amelio's dress a lot to quote you
35:39he was at a different place than the zeitgeist in this case i think he was right and everybody was wrong
35:45it was very bold and loud but felt light it was kind of a breath of fresh air the pop of color
35:51underneath and all the kind of little details but at the same time it's not an easy dress to wear
35:56i would look like a chinese lantern in that thing it would not be pretty
36:02the low scores hearing andre talk about how excited he was it's great but like you don't get that
36:09backstory if you're just shopping i'm kind of getting tired of having these conversations with
36:16him i got patagonia from the whole thing i did i got footlocker from this oh and the pink shoes
36:21and the matching eyeshadow wow that was really rough rough the styling on that was not okay her face
36:28looked forlorn though can i just say i'll see his jacket was really good and those pants were a disaster
36:35but i do think she will learn her lesson i felt like it was a mommy kangaroo and something was
36:40going to jump out she tried to do a suit when everyone else was doing dresses something you notice
36:45about neutrals some khakis are wonderful that one was not good and you almost can't know that inside
36:51a fabric so you have to try it and fail with it and then go on to the next khaki
36:58if we move on to joshua hi it was a combination of that top and scar
37:04it was so schizophrenic to me could you wear this is this a wearable piece i mean no
37:09it just bared no resemblance to the image of me at all like military geisha sergeant pepper
37:15that's it sergeant and the fit too it's so literal how he just copied the palette
37:21it was just kind of like a math equation
37:26we have our decision yeah
37:29okay
