00:01Previously on Project Runway All Stars.
00:06Your challenge is to create wearable art.
00:11Oh!
00:12Suede has never held a can of spray paint,
00:15so this is a major challenge.
00:17This looks a bit like blood running down here.
00:20Is it wearable art?
00:21Absolutely.
00:22Oh, my gosh.
00:23You make this tombola with many, many polka.
00:27Lara Kathleen, she's on everyone's last gay nerve.
00:30She said, I must have been a saint in another life
00:33because I've been given so much in this one.
00:39That's divine.
00:40Of all the projects, it gives graffiti the most.
00:43Emilio is this week's winner.
00:45Yay!
00:46It's labor-intensive on the eye.
00:48I don't find that this is wearable.
00:51You really lose that spray paint feel.
00:53Suede, you're out.
00:57Thirteen of the best designers from Project Runway are back.
01:01Back for more.
01:02Back for blood.
01:04Admit it, you missed them.
01:06And this time, the competition is tougher than ever.
01:09This is war.
01:11Each week, their skills are tested to the limit.
01:14Hideous or fabulous.
01:16This is not a game.
01:17Nothing gets past me.
01:19Who will be cut and who will have it all sewn up?
01:22This is Project Runway All Stars.
01:26The winning designer will have the chance to create a custom-branded capsule collection with Nine West.
01:31The winner will also receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire Magazine and a position as contributing editor for one year.
01:37From Laura Mercier, an all-expenses-paid trip around the world to Fashion Week such as Paris, London, Milan, and Tokyo.
01:44A technology suite and office space from HP and Intel to bring their creativity to life and run their business.
01:50A sewing and embroidery studio from Brothers Sewing and Embroidery to help launch their line and a cash prize of $150,000.
01:57Hello, designers.
02:15Hello.
02:16As all-stars, you all know that Project Runway has a lot of fans.
02:20So we've asked the fans to take part in the first interactive challenge ever.
02:27Wow.
02:28So Joanna Coles is waiting for you in the workroom to explain everything.
02:33And I'll see you back here tomorrow for the runway.
02:36Good luck.
02:39Thank you, Carolyn.
02:40You're welcome.
02:49I want to introduce you to Sandra Misik, who is the Senior Vice President of Marketing for USA Today, one of the nation's leading news organizations.
03:00So at USA Today, we pioneered visual storytelling and infographics.
03:05And we continue to be at the forefront of clear and concise, visually driven storytelling and journalism.
03:12And in publishing, we have a saying, every picture tells a story.
03:17So that's the theme of this week's challenge.
03:21We went out to all your fans and asked them to tweet us inspiring pictures.
03:30We received thousands.
03:33And your job is to take one of those pictures and turn it into a fashion design perfect for the runway.
03:41Wow.
03:42Great.
03:43It's an interactive collaboration.
03:46So I think this challenge is going to be a really intriguing and interesting challenge.
03:50It's really amazing that the fans are getting involved with this because I know how much this means to them.
03:55So hopefully I can make the fans proud.
03:57Think about what is the headline that you want to communicate with your look.
04:02So two desktop computers, courtesy of HP, have been set up in the lounge for you.
04:09Emilio, congratulations.
04:11You won last week's challenge.
04:13So you get to pick who you would like to select a photo with you first.
04:18I'm going to pick Casanova.
04:22Casanova doesn't have ulterior motives.
04:24He's open to everyone.
04:26He likes everyone.
04:27But before you get started, Sandra has a surprise for you.
04:32The winning designer and look will be featured with a photograph and an editorial piece in USA Today.
04:40That's a good surprise.
04:41Fantastic.
04:42Good luck.
04:43I'm really hoping that I win this one because the prize is amazing.
04:45It'll be on every doorstep, right under your door in your hotel, and also online.
04:50It's enormous for a young designer.
04:51Good luck, designers.
04:52See you later.
04:53Bye.
04:54I came upon Sophie from California.
05:07I'm choosing this picture because I have nieces her age, and that's an innocence that I think
05:12we lose in fashion.
05:13Okay, I already have mine.
05:15It's, for me, a fusion in between feminine and masculine at the same time.
05:22That's kind of cool.
05:27Ivy, next.
05:28Althea, next.
05:30Well, it's from the UK, and it looks like a train station to me.
05:37So that really spoke to me.
05:39It's just the colors and the shape, and it's reminding me of when my husband proposed to
05:44me in the train station.
05:45I decide to choose this photo because I believe a butterfly represents evolution and change.
05:51I try every day to grow as a person.
05:55What I love about this picture is that it is all vintage jewelry.
06:04So the picture that I choose is shot out of an airplane, and you see the clouds and the
06:09sun and the blue sky.
06:10It makes me feel free and peaceful.
06:13Joshua.
06:14Anthony Ryan.
06:16Mwah.
06:17So I'm looking around like, what the hell, nobody likes me here?
06:22Or people are thinking like, oh, she has everything, let's not give her anything else.
06:26Seems like everyone that's left here, she's offended in one way or another.
06:30Are you having a mean streak, Ivy?
06:32How am I being mean?
06:33You were just laughing.
06:35I can't laugh if there's something that's not funny.
06:38Yep.
06:39They want me to, like, talk to them like we came from the same place.
06:42It's not gonna happen.
06:43Flora.
06:44I choose you.
06:45Andre.
06:46Andre.
06:47Andre.
06:48I come across this picture from Deborah from Alabama, and she has this rather forlorn look
06:56on her face.
06:57And I thought, you look so sad.
06:59And I thought, boy, I'm kinda sad too because I'm, you know, the last picked again.
07:03Let's go.
07:04Sketchy, sketchy.
07:05Sketchy, sketchy.
07:06Sketchy.
07:07So this is my picture.
07:13It really just spoke to me because it almost has a way of paths crossing
07:17and the different choices that you could make that could change your path of life.
07:22The person that took my photo is Kevin from Massachusetts.
07:25I think this is really beautiful.
07:26The movement of water is really interesting
07:29and the way that water reacts to a single drop.
07:33I know that I'm going to do something that's fluid.
07:35It has to resemble water, so immediately, silk charmeuse.
07:38This is the first time in this competition that I'm not doing the dress.
07:41I want to put a stamp on these judges' minds like I haven't even talked to them yet.
07:45That's why, to me, it's imperative that I'm in the top for this challenge.
07:50I'm designing a dress.
07:52She has an all-American quality to her, which is young and fresh.
07:56I think what I've designed so far has been very bold,
08:00and now I'm going to show my softer side.
08:02Okay, guys, time to head to mood.
08:04Don't forget your pictures.
08:06Woo! I'm excited about this one.
08:11You guys are going to have to move a little faster.
08:15Designers, we have 30 minutes.
08:17Thank you!
08:20Yes, yes, of course.
08:23Oh, we have a challenge.
08:24I'm making these modular nets that can be combined in different ways,
08:30kind of like a Tinker Toy set of fashion.
08:33The colors, I'd like two yards.
08:35The black, I'd like three.
08:37Ten minutes, everyone!
08:39Thank you!
08:40Why would someone take this photo, and I think it's truly the colors?
08:43I thought that I would be true to Kevin and his photo,
08:45and really match the colors perfectly.
08:49I think it's something of this tone.
08:52Time's up, designers.
08:53That's it.
08:54Got it.
08:56Good luck, everyone.
08:58Let's do this, guys.
09:07Pressure is up so high because we only have one day to complete this challenge.
09:13Everyone has their own sewing machine, so keep that in mind.
09:18Okay, I'm right behind you.
09:20Because this is All Stars, it seems very, very intense,
09:23like we're already competing for the final three.
09:25So I was on the bottom last week, and this challenge, I want to rise to the top.
09:30I definitely consider myself a separates designer.
09:33However, I think this is unique for me because I'm pushing it more than I normally would.
09:41I'm making a silk charmeuse gown, and I'm going to create my own print to resemble water.
09:46I need a drink.
09:47I have, like, a stiff drink.
09:49I'm trying to deal with the other designers' personalities.
09:52Everybody being like, oh, my God, the whole privilege thing.
09:55And I have this really vulnerable feeling.
09:57I get that there are people here that are not sincere, and they're not wanting to be friends.
10:02That's fine.
10:02We won't be friends.
10:03We have different lives.
10:04It's new people that don't understand you.
10:06And as much as I try to do this and not hear what other people are saying, I still hear what they say.
10:15I think Laura needs to be more careful and soft with the way she says things.
10:20Because sometimes they can come off very harsh.
10:23It's been difficult when people here don't understand me, and I can't say a word about my own home life
10:27because they just want to be like, wow, isn't that peachy?
10:30If you let every person in here affect you, you won't be capable of your best work.
10:36Coming up on Project Runway All-Stars.
10:41The pressure's on.
10:42You actually seem a bit emotional today.
10:44It's very personal.
10:46I'm surprised you haven't won a challenge yet.
10:49I might be an outsider.
10:50Where I keep all of my precious things.
10:52This challenge is an interactive challenge.
11:07Project Runway fans around the world tweeted images, and we're to select an image and be inspired to create a garment.
11:16I think it definitely will be a little bit more difficult for the judges to judge this challenge because it is so arbitrary.
11:22I mean, what's important is to make sure that your inspiration story and the photo correlate with your design.
11:30I think this is a great challenge for all of us.
11:32The first thing I start working on is the top that I'm creating because I realize that, you know,
11:37the linear lines of the design is going to be extremely time-consuming, and I want to make sure that it's done right.
11:49The pressure's on, but any type of stress or panic that I have, I can just push it out.
11:55I might be an outsider.
12:00I'm reluctant to believe that I am an outsider, but I think I am.
12:04I seem to have so little in common with these people.
12:06I've created a second level of desk underneath my desk.
12:11Where I keep all of my precious things.
12:15Andre to me is Gollum from Lord of the Rings because he reminds me of that weird creature.
12:20Andre is a great guy, but I don't see him as a designer.
12:25I see him at the personality.
12:27Let's see some, oh, Johnson!
12:29Exactly.
12:32Designers, hello.
12:33Hello.
12:35This is such a talented room, and I just want to remind you, this is All Stars.
12:41You all have what it takes to be a great designer.
12:44Do you have what it takes to win this competition?
12:48I'm thrilled to be joined by USA Today's style editor, Alison Maxwell,
12:53and we are now going to come around together and help you with your designs.
12:58Andre.
12:59So, do you have your photograph, Andy?
13:01I do, I do.
13:02This is Deborah from Alabama.
13:04My response is modular knits.
13:06Panels of fabric with zippers that are kind of interchangeable.
13:10So you sort of make your own t-shirt almost.
13:13As it works.
13:13By strapping in your own panels or zipping them in when you feel like it.
13:17I can't decide if it's bonkers or brilliant.
13:19I think it's bonkers.
13:21And brilliant.
13:22But brilliantly so.
13:23Yes.
13:24Big shocker, Andre's doing something wackadoo.
13:26I mean, I think we're used to it by now.
13:28Hi.
13:31Oh, hi, Laura Kathleen.
13:32Hi.
13:33Tell us about your picture.
13:35What spoke to you about it?
13:37What spoke to me was, um, vulnerability.
13:41I loved the look of it, obviously, but then it also gave a little emotion.
13:46You actually seem a bit emotional today.
13:48You know, just the dynamics.
13:50I think as the competition goes, it gets more serious and, you know, tensions are higher.
13:54This is beautiful.
13:55When do people wear long gowns?
13:58I wear long gowns everywhere I go, I feel like.
14:00Why do I not find that surprising?
14:01When was the last time you wore a long gown?
14:03A while ago.
14:04A while ago.
14:05Yeah.
14:05So I think it's really important to focus on something that, you know, everyone can wear.
14:10Sure.
14:11Good.
14:11All right.
14:11Good luck with it, Laura Kathleen.
14:13I appreciate it.
14:14You know, I'm not going to lie to you.
14:15I'm not trying to make clothes that are accessible to, like, the farmers of America.
14:19I'm trying to make clothes that are fashion-forward and progressive.
14:24Amelia.
14:25Hello.
14:25Congratulations on last week's triumph.
14:28Yay.
14:29Finally.
14:30Tell us a little bit about the picture.
14:33To Sophie from California.
14:35And I loved her attitude.
14:37So what I created is a simple T-shirt dress.
14:41What's the headline?
14:43Sophie's Choice.
14:44I'm not sure about that headline.
14:46We do have to remember what Sophie's Choice refers to.
14:49So we don't want to go there.
14:49I remember the Meryl Streep and how deep it was.
14:52So you're right.
14:52Maybe I just played on the name.
14:54Okay.
14:55But thank you for the tip.
14:56Good luck.
14:56Okay.
14:58Hi, ladies.
14:59Hi, Joshua.
15:00So talk to us about this.
15:01Sure.
15:01I wanted to be true to the colors and work with this color palette.
15:05So I'm working with a very structured shirt.
15:08I want you to pay attention up here that it doesn't end up looking too arts and craftsy.
15:13Josh's look.
15:14Josh's look, it's disheartening because I know that he's better than what he's doing.
15:19One of the things we always say at USA Today is when you're looking at a design, you want
15:24to look at it and feel it.
15:25And in looking at the picture and what you have going so far, I think it's perfect.
15:30I think you have to be careful with black lace and red.
15:34It can read very hookery.
15:36Ew.
15:36I actually like these pants.
15:38I'm just nervous.
15:40First of all, those hats are making me crazy.
15:42What I'm doing is to add some masculine elements.
15:45You don't really realize that a caterpillar can turn into something as beautiful as a butterfly.
15:49I feel like as human beings, we always try to evolve into better people.
15:54I think you are finding a real energy in this season.
15:58I feel like you've found a place where you feel strong.
16:01I appreciate that.
16:02All right.
16:02Good luck, Ivy.
16:03Thanks.
16:05Hey.
16:05Anthony Ryan, how are you?
16:07I'm great.
16:07How are you?
16:08Good.
16:08So where's your photo?
16:09Let's take a look.
16:10Right here.
16:11This is from Diane from New York.
16:13Okay.
16:14And what was the headline you pulled from the photo?
16:16Always moving forward.
16:17It's very personal.
16:19I was diagnosed with cancer.
16:21And that whole time I was doing chemo, I maintained a full school schedule because doing this is
16:27what really brought me a positive outlook.
16:29Designing and fashion, that was who I relied on when I had cancer.
16:33It wasn't family or friends or doctors.
16:37It was myself and designing.
16:40Life is really about second chances, and I'm going to make the best of it.
16:44Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the skirt.
16:46I think it looks great.
16:47Yeah, good start.
16:48Thank you so much.
16:50Althea.
16:51Hi, how are you?
16:52Hi.
16:52Tell us a little bit about your photo.
16:54I love the color combination.
16:55I love the tone.
16:56When I look at this picture, I see lots of light.
17:00I'm not seeing the taupe, which is your dominant color.
17:03I felt like if I went too much in the direction of a lighter color and all of the draping, it might just start to go away from that classic element of a suit.
17:12I'm glad you're stretching yourself.
17:13I'm glad you're stretching yourself by doing a trouser suit.
17:16I wonder if it's as special.
17:17I wonder if it's as special as the photo.
17:19I wonder if it's as special as the photo.
17:21Althea's picture is very architectural, so she's going to definitely have to step it up on the fit of her garment this time.
17:29I would just like to say, when you guys picked your pictures, there was probably some emotion you were feeling.
17:34I want you to make sure that that emotion translates into your final product.
17:38Thanks.
17:39Thanks.
17:40Okay.
17:41Good luck, guys.
17:47I'm more just like I want to make sure that it looks like amazing.
17:50Mm-hmm.
17:51I decided to do a little bit of a drape in a pant just because it's something different.
17:55I'm here to take a risk.
17:56This is all-stars.
18:00Let's just try it on and see how it fits.
18:02My name is Sophie.
18:04Look at her.
18:05I know she's all done now.
18:06Let me put some shoes.
18:07Let's try those.
18:08Althea's design, I don't know what woman would want to wear something that unflattering.
18:13There's going to be like a drape front on top.
18:16Kane has bad taste, and at this point in the competition, nothing can help change or fix Kane's aesthetic.
18:23It gets really boring.
18:25I just got to really press it.
18:27I think with the time constraints, I bit off more than I could chew.
18:30I'm like, boo-boo, you have got to hurry up.
18:33I know I'm not just the only one.
18:36We're all scrambling.
18:37Ten minutes, everyone.
18:38Ten minutes.
18:39The skirt is five yards of fabric.
18:40That's what gives it a poofiness.
18:41And then I have to line it.
18:42It's a lot.
18:43Torture.
18:44Okay, guys.
18:45That's a wrap.
18:46Let's go home.
18:47Come on.
18:48In the end, you're here to show what you can do.
18:49I'm here for that.
18:50You're here for that.
18:51You're here for that.
18:52Right.
18:53Any kind of drama or that kind of thing around it, I just, I don't really want to be a part
18:56of, you know?
18:57No.
18:58You just really have to stay focused on the design.
18:59You know, that's gonna get you through.
19:00Right.
19:01So cheers, girl.
19:02To create design.
19:03Cheers.
19:04Cheers.
19:05Cheers, girl.
19:06Cheers.
19:07Cheers.
19:08Cheers.
19:09Cheers.
19:10Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
19:12The morning on the runway, I don't have enough time.
19:13I don't have enough fabric.
19:14Oh, no.
19:15I'm not even ready for you.
19:16Joshua's look reminds me of Rainbow Brite.
19:17I wouldn't really see anyone.
19:18I don't know.
19:19Oh, I'm here for that.
19:20You're here for that.
19:21You're here for that.
19:22Right.
19:23Any kind of drama or that kind of thing around it, I just, I don't really want to be a part
19:24of, you know?
19:25No.
19:26You just really have to stay focused on the design.
19:27You know, that's gonna get you through.
19:28Right.
19:29So cheers, girl, to create design.
19:30Cheers.
19:31Yes.
19:32Cheers.
19:33Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
19:35The morning on the runway, I don't have enough time.
19:36I don't have enough fabric.
19:42There's anyone over the age of 20 wearing that garment.
19:49It's important to have a challenge like this because we actually get to draw inspiration
20:00from the fans.
20:01They are the people that are coming back wanting to see what I'm going to be designing
20:04next.
20:05So many clothes.
20:06Andre is crazy as a loon.
20:08He is constantly thinking 10 steps ahead.
20:12But as far as time maintenance, it's a miracle he pulls anything out.
20:17I'm pushing myself because the level of work is elevated.
20:21I'm competing to do the best I can and to win.
20:26Right.
20:27Thanks.
20:28Oh, no, I'm not even ready for you to put it on yet.
20:33Oh, okay.
20:34I'd like to see if Elthea push herself a little bit more.
20:37You know, she hasn't been in the top or the bottom, so it's hard to get a read on what
20:41they're thinking about her.
20:44There are moments where you feel the pressure, you know, when something's not finished or
20:48ready the day of a runway show, but that's the industry.
21:00Good morning.
21:01Morning.
21:02Oh, good morning.
21:03How about red, orange, lit, and Laura Mercier's mascara?
21:06I want her to look very fresh.
21:08Sheen here and then the rest matte.
21:10Great.
21:11Copper bronze with like a nice glow and strong eyebrows.
21:16Tight, tight, tight.
21:17How bony?
21:18It's gotta be a bony.
21:19I'm thinking Center Park.
21:20Do you agree Center Park?
21:23Maybe something like that.
21:25Love it.
21:26Guys, we have 30 minutes.
21:29Flawless, no?
21:30Casanova's a quick little monster.
21:31That little bugger knows how to sell a pair of pants in like 30 minutes.
21:34I do love Altia's look.
21:36The jacket, beautiful, but I think the execution of the pants was sloppy.
21:41Don't fluff it behind the...
21:43No, no, no, no.
21:44Okay.
21:45It means your stress is so bold.
21:47It's so out there.
21:48I love it.
21:49These challenges are super difficult and I've put a lot of emotion into my design and made
21:55it very personal.
21:56So I really hope the judges see that.
21:58Can't make this Parisian prostitute with a chicken in the head?
22:03Terrible.
22:04Oh, Debra from Alabama, what's going on in this photo?
22:09I wonder if Debra is like me, another creative spirit trying to get their work out into the
22:17public.
22:18Guys, time to walk.
22:20Line up, pack your bags, get your girl.
22:23It was not fitting because it was too tight.
22:26Thank God for elastic.
22:28Joshua's look to me reminds me of Rainbow Brite.
22:31I wouldn't really see anyone over the age of 20 wearing that garment.
22:35I just don't think that it's chic.
22:37Going into this runway, I'm trying to be as happy as I can about this look.
22:42But it's very nerve-wracking.
22:48Coming up on Project Runway All Stars.
22:51There's too much to think about.
22:53It just feels costumey for me.
22:55Like it looks like a wound.
22:56I would look like a Chinese lantern in that thing.
23:01Good evening, designers.
23:02Hi.
23:03This week's challenge was truly for the fans.
23:04We joined forces with USA Today for the first ever interactive challenge.
23:18The Project Runway fans tweeted us their photos.
23:21They came in from all over the country.
23:23In fact, we even heard from fans in Spain, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Russia.
23:30Wow.
23:31Your challenge was to turn a picture into a fashion story on the runway.
23:36Let's meet the judges.
23:38First, the designer and co-founder of Marquesa, the beautiful Georgina Chapman.
23:44Hi, designers.
23:45And one of the most famous names in fashion, designer Isaac Mizorahi.
23:52Hi, designers.
23:54Our first guest is one of the biggest sensations in the fashion world.
24:00Her fashion blog called Style Rookie is one of the most influential blogs in the fashion business.
24:07And she's still only 16.
24:08Oh my gosh.
24:09Wow.
24:10The style rookie herself, Tavi Gevinson.
24:14Hi.
24:17Our next guest is leading the new generation of women's wear designers.
24:22Her fashion forward clothing and accessories have been worn by Kate Moss, Blake Lively and Rihanna.
24:28One of the coolest designers out there, Charlotte Ronson.
24:35The winning designer and their look will receive a photo and interview story in USA Today.
24:41So let's find out who's going to make the headlines.
24:45Have a good show.
24:47I think my dress looks badass.
24:53I am on cloud nine.
24:56I think the fabric is moving very fluid.
25:07The print looks amazing.
25:09I have worked to prove myself to anybody that has doubted.
25:20She looks great.
25:21And I'm thinking, wow, this is really working.
25:23This is good.
25:24This is exuberant and happy and clean.
25:27And there's a ton of whimsy.
25:29And she has great hair.
25:31It's kind of harmonious.
25:38You can see how comfortable she is and how happy she is with the look.
25:42You can feel it.
25:43You can feel it.
25:51I love how she looks in the suit.
25:53I think the suit has great movements.
25:55It's tailored very nicely to her figure.
25:58It would turn my head and I'd be like, who designed that?
26:01I want one.
26:02I'm capable of designing clothing that people will love.
26:11All I'm thinking to myself is, I don't even have a shot in hell at winning this.
26:15So, God, please don't let me go home on this.
26:19I think the dress looks stunning.
26:25I love it on the girl.
26:27But I'm a little worried because it's not a bright color.
26:31This really does mean a lot to me because this is a huge opportunity to show our work on a national scale.
26:46So, I'm more motivated than ever to win this competition.
26:55I love creating something different.
26:57And I'm like, ba-bam.
26:59It's bold.
27:01It's fresh.
27:02It stands out from the rest of them.
27:04It's exciting.
27:10My model looks hot, strong, confident, beautiful, and commercial.
27:16I'm a man.
27:26Designers.
27:30If I call your name, please step forward.
27:34Laura Kathleen.
27:37Andre.
27:39Joshua.
27:41Anthony Ryan.
27:44Emilio.
27:46Althea.
27:48If I called your name, one of you has this week's highest score and will be the winner.
27:55And unfortunately, another has the lowest and will be eliminated.
28:02The rest of you, congratulations, you are safe.
28:06You may leave the runway.
28:12Designers, let's bring out your models.
28:22Althea, how did you pick your photo?
28:23The photo really spoke to me because I like the idea that even though it's this really old, glamorous building, how they've kind of been able to reuse it for a very modern purpose.
28:32You succeed in so many ways, but somehow the pants I'm not getting at all.
28:37I think like the expected thing to do would be like a skinny pant with this jacket, so I wanted to push it and do something different.
28:42So what's that sort of pocket in the front, side left?
28:45Oh, this here? That's a drape.
28:47It doesn't drape enough or it drapes too much or something. It looks like a wound.
28:51I like the way that you referenced the photo in the colors, but overall I think it's a bit drab.
28:58I like the idea of like a deconstructed job pant, but we see this look from Givenchy and so it's got to be so spot on.
29:06Yeah, I think the jacket is done really nicely and all the details and I like how you took a Victorian feel to make it modern, but the trousers do kind of throw me off.
29:15I like how you talk about the photo and how you are interested in this old building being used in these new modern ways and I'm a drop crotch apologist and I really like that you like did it, but I wish that there had been something more interesting with the jacket or with the color of the top underneath.
29:36Essentially in the photograph it was really all about not looking back. It was always moving forward.
29:41I love looking at the photograph and looking at the dress and how they reference each other. Could you turn around? Because all those straps on the back are so great. For a dress that might be too sexy, it's not too sexy.
29:56You have such a graphic quality to what you do. My criticism to you today Anthony is that I've seen these colors from you and I've seen this dress from you.
30:02Right.
30:03I'd like you to take a bit of a risk next time. Okay.
30:06I agree with Georgina that you could take more risks, but I'm really happy in looking at this dress.
30:11I like how it's like a little bit of a mock to the neck, makes it a little bit more conservative and I also like that it's a longer length too.
30:19I think you did a really good job of capturing both the spirit of the photo, but also the spirit of the kind of woman who chose that photo. And I just love so much how that's reflected in both the sheer in front and all the straps in the back. So yeah, I like it.
30:34Joshua.
30:36So the photo I chose really spoke to me and I love how linear it is, but at the same time there's something that's so fluid about it.
30:42It just feels a touch costumey. When I see your picture, the colors bleed into one another. I wanted to see something more organic.
30:51I love the idea of color, but for some reason I feel like in this design, there's too much to think about. If that was all gray and black, we probably would have liked it a lot more.
31:02It's hard for me to really like the two pieces together, but it's also hard for me to imagine them working with other parts of someone's wardrobe.
31:10So Andre, why did you choose this photo?
31:15It's a photo of a woman from Alabama looking off to the side, slightly forlorn. So this is my response, euphoric modular knits.
31:25Panels of stretch fabric, but they have separating zippers that you can combine as you wish.
31:30I don't get anything forlorn or what forlorn has to do with anything. I had no idea that it was about zipping together panels.
31:36Part of the idea that I thought would be so wonderful is if this was a spread in USA Today, the actual article could be the pattern.
31:44Oh, interesting. Interesting.
31:45Maybe I'll get through to you. Oh, dear. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
31:50Andre, when you're using a stretch fabric and a zipper, what happens is the zipper is stiff and it's going to buckle.
31:56And it's taking away your idea of having the illusion of a slimming waist through color blocking, which is a great idea.
32:04I mean, I like the punch of colors. I just think if you had more time, it would have been a little more successful.
32:11If only.
32:13Laura Kathleen.
32:14I was really happy to get my picture. It is a droplet of water hitting a clean surface of water. And so I got ivory and I actually dyed this and made the print.
32:24This is really good as a dress. And then when you see that it's inspired by that photograph, you go, oh, right. It's wonderful.
32:33I like that you had to dye it yourself because I really love that it captures the mood of the photo without directly referencing what it's of.
32:40Overall, I think you did a great job and I love this dress all the more. Now I know you did that print yourself.
32:48If you're going to do a long skirt, I really would have loved to see in the bottom of the dress touch the floor. It's a commitment to long skirt and I always think it needs to go all the way.
32:56It just really stood out for me and it is very organic and I think it's really, really beautiful. And I would wear this.
33:04I'd love for you to wear it.
33:05Amelia.
33:06My photo is from a young girl from California named Sophie because it reminded me of the fantasy of fashion and I wanted to create a dress that had a fantasy element to it.
33:17It's light as a feather. Your girl looks totally modern to me. Just was like this one fresh idea.
33:23It's definitely a harder dress to wear and the shape could probably have been pushed out a little bit more and bigger. But I think it's fun. I think it's playful.
33:33Yes, thank you.
33:35I absolutely love your inspiration. I'm in love with her. I mean, she's so sweet. You know what? Your dress evokes that emotion. It makes you smile. It has a wink to it. And I love that creativity and the way you've stepped away from, I don't know, the zeitgeist of everybody else here.
33:49Thank you very much. Thank you, designers. You've given us a lot to think about. So we're going to have our chat and we'll call you back.
33:58Hey, what's up?
34:11So what did they say?
34:12I'm on the bottom and they didn't like the color of the suit. Clearly, they want a bright runway.
34:17With that said, you know, mine was so bright and they're like, if you do that on a monochromatic scale, it could be really impactful.
34:23I think they expect color. And if you don't use color, you should have a really good reason why you're not.
34:30I mean, I guess we can start with the high scores. There we saw some standouts.
34:34Anthony did a pitch perfect dress. Portions were fantastic. His balance is great.
34:40The great thing is that we know who that woman is. She's sexy. She's in control. There's always invention. He actually gets it right.
34:47I think he did a great job. But at the same time, the back part is like almost too low.
34:52There were so many bodycon dresses, but it was the only one where I didn't immediately feel like skin was being shown.
35:00And I like that he plays around with that. I think that he knows he's playing around with something. It's an actual intention.
35:05Talk about Laura Kathleen. I do love that she created something with these panels in front that had a bit of originality.
35:16Laura Kathleen did an amazing job dyeing that fabric and props to her for doing that.
35:22She played up the fact that she did create that fabric. And that being said, it's what made it interesting.
35:27But really, when that dress walked, it wasn't like, wow.
35:33I liked Emilio's dress a lot. To quote you, he was at a different place than the zeitgeist.
35:38In this case, I think he was right and everybody was wrong.
35:41It was very bold and loud, but felt light.
35:44It was kind of a breath of fresh air. The pop of color underneath and all the kind of little details.
35:49But at the same time, it's not an easy dress to wear.
35:52I would look like a Chinese lantern in that thing. It would not be pretty.
35:56The low scores. Hearing Andre talk about how excited he was, it's great.
36:04But, like, you don't get that back story if you're just shopping.
36:08I'm kind of getting tired of having these conversations with him.
36:13I got Patagonia from the whole thing. I did. I got Foot Locker from this.
36:17Oh, and the pink shoes and the matching eye shadow.
36:20Wow. That was really rough. Rough. The styling on that was not okay.
36:24Her face looked forlorn, though.
36:29Can I just say, Althea's jacket was really good and those pants were a disaster,
36:32but I do think she will learn her lesson.
36:34I felt like it was a mommy kangaroo and something was going to jump out of the pouch.
36:38She tried to do a suit when everyone else was doing dresses.
36:41Something you notice about neutrals, some khakis are wonderful.
36:44That one was not good. And you almost can't know that inside a fabric story.
36:48You have to try it and fail with it and then go on to the next khaki.
36:53If we move on to Joshua,
36:57It was a combination of that top and skirt.
37:01It was so schizophrenic to me.
37:03Could you wear this? Is this a wearable piece?
37:05No. I mean, no.
37:06It just bared no resemblance to the image of me at all.
37:09Like military geisha.
37:11Sergeant Pepper?
37:12That's it, Sergeant Pepper.
37:13And the fit, too.
37:14It's so literal how he just copied the palette.
37:18It was just kind of like a math equation.
37:23We have our decision?
37:24Yeah.
37:26Okay.
37:27Designers, tonight one of you will be named the winner of this challenge.
37:40And will receive a photo and interview story in USA Today.
37:44And one of you will be going home.
37:51Designers, one of you will be named this week's winner.
37:56And one of you will be going home.
38:00Emilio.
38:02You are safe.
38:03You can leave the runway.
38:09Anthony Ryan.
38:11And Laura Kathleen.
38:13One of you is the winner of this challenge.
38:17And that designer is...
38:22Anthony Ryan.
38:27Congratulations, Anthony Ryan.
38:28Yeah.
38:30Your headline is...
38:31Always moving forward.
38:32Well, that's good.
38:33Because you'll move forward to next week.
38:35You may now leave the runway.
38:38I won the Interactive Fan Challenge, and I get an editorial in USA Today.
38:43This is huge.
38:44This is something that I would never get anywhere else.
38:48Laura Kathleen, you also did a good job.
38:51So you can leave the runway.
39:01Congratulations.
39:03Second time.
39:04Second time.
39:05I was about to pass out.
39:06Awesome.
39:07Althea.
39:12You are safe.
39:14We'll see more from you next week.
39:16Thank you guys so much for your feedback.
39:22Andre.
39:23Joshua.
39:25You have the lowest scores.
39:27And that means that one of you will be eliminated tonight.
39:30Andre.
39:31Your look is very colorful.
39:33But yet it's unclear who the woman you're designing for is.
39:38Joshua.
39:40We love your idea of using bright colors.
39:43But you were too literal with your inspiration.
39:48Joshua.
39:50You are in.
39:53Which means I'm sorry to say Andre, but you are out.
40:05It's too bad.
40:07Thank you, Joshua.
40:09You stay in the competition.
40:11You may leave the runway.
40:13Thank you guys.
40:19Andre.
40:20We've loved having you here.
40:23This is something that, um, that I'm proud of.
40:28We're gonna miss you.
40:31Thanks, Carolyn.
40:33Bye.
40:34Bye.
40:38Just one group hug, please.
40:40Really fast.
40:42It was eye-opening to be in this group of people that were so driven.
40:46I'm sad that it's over, but it's making me very interesting and it's definitely giving me a lot of stories to tell.
40:55I shall be okay.
41:01Congratulations on winning the USA Today Challenge.
41:05Why did you pick that picture?
41:06One thing that I really got from my whole cancer experience is just to be appreciative for every day that you're given.
41:11I really wanted the dress to just be very linear, like to photograph.
41:14It's sexy.
41:15It's kind of unexpected.
41:16And you really turn to the back and it's like, oh, wow.
41:19For this strong, confident woman who is comfortable in her own skin.
41:22You nailed it.
41:27Next, on Project Runway All Starts.
41:30Your challenge is to create an androgynous look for your model.
41:33And I'm gonna give you a bit of a twist.
41:35Oh, no.
41:36Oh, .
41:37Don't panic.
41:38Don't panic.
41:39Don't panic.
41:42Did you just say there wasn't much ballroom?
41:44I'm in trouble.
41:45Such a drama crew.
41:46What the hell?
41:47We should be doing our own garments.
41:49We are thrilled to welcome designer Jason Wu.
41:52I think in this case you would have done better with less.
41:54I mean, everything's wrong.
41:56I have to cool off after that one.
41:58Atrocious, okay?
42:00Okay.
