00:00And in a game with small yardage plays, that's the longest play for either team, 25 yards.
00:09Bengals with a one-point lead, Jerome Ford with the carry, and Ford dropped by Chris Jenkins Jr. after a one-yard gain.
00:19Well, and when you look at this Bengals wide receiver room, Jerry Judy was clearly the standout, and coming into today,
00:26it was by a pretty significant margin as far as his career receptions above everybody else.
00:33Yeah, and DeAndre Carter, he'll have a role there, but he's going to be mainly your return guy,
00:38and you can see the other numbers.
00:40So Isaiah Bond, I think, is intriguing, you know, with that downfield speed.
00:45Jamari Thrash, you know, another year in this offense, feeling a lot more comfortable, says he's not thinking as much.
00:51I think it's going to be interesting to watch this group behind Jerry Judy-Grode during the year.
00:54It's going to be interesting to watch this game in the fourth quarter.
00:57Through three, a one-point Cincinnati lead.
01:02Presented by YouTube TV.
01:04Alongside Darrell Johnston, with Allison Williams on the sideline, our entire Fox crew,
01:08as we kick things off from Huntington Bank Field.
01:11Week one in a one-point game.
01:14Browns in Bengals territory to start this fourth quarter with a second and nine.
01:18Flacco a pump.
01:21He'll run to the right.
01:22Flacco tucks it and chugs up the field across the 40.
01:25And out of bounds at the 39.
01:27This crowd loves it as Flacco rumbles his way forward for four.
01:33Ah, that's awesome.
01:34I think, you know, some people, you always hear you underestimate the athleticism of Joe Flacco,
01:42even at 40 years old.
01:44I mean, that's awesome right there.
01:46I mean, as tall as he is.
01:50Well, it's not the longest run that he's had against the Cincinnati Bengals in his career,
01:56but it's four yards to set him up with third and manageable.
02:03Third down and five.
02:06Flacco floats it.
02:08Fannin had it and couldn't pull it in.
02:11Cam Taylor-Britt on the coverage, and the rookie wiping his hands on his pants.
02:16He knows he let that one slip away.
02:19Yeah, this is a big one right here.
02:21I mean, you're going to be able to convert this first down, run after the catch,
02:26and we've seen a couple of throws like that down in that area,
02:29but Dylan Sampson going down and making those great catches,
02:32and that's what you have to do in that situation.
02:37Here we go.
02:39On fourth down, they eschew the 57-yard field goal try
02:43and instead line up with the offense on fourth and five.
02:49It will go.
02:50Flacco, quick toss, dropped by Judy.
02:54He led the NFL with 13 drops a year ago.
02:58He drops this one on fourth.
03:03Jerry Judy had a first down.
03:06All he's got to do is secure it,
03:08and back-to-back drops cost the Browns the ball.
03:16Fannin a drop on third.
03:18Judy a drop on fourth.
03:20Browns turn it over on downs,
03:22and now the Bengals with an opportunity to add to the one-point lead.
03:25Good field position just shy of the 40-yard line,
03:27and Chase Brown with the carry,
03:29and Brown met in the hole by Schlesinger.
03:33Maybe a yard for Chase Brown.
03:35And that's all he's going to find.
03:39The real question becomes, can they get these wide receivers going on this end?
03:44Jamar Chase and T. Higgins, pretty quiet days, Darryl.
03:47Really quiet days, and that's been kind of a common theme against this Browns defense.
03:52It's always a little bit less than what their averages are,
03:55and even when you compare it across the board with the other division rivals here in the AFC North.
04:00So that's your strength.
04:02You've got to get back to it at some point in time,
04:05and challenge a great newsome challenge at Denzel Ward,
04:07and see if your guys can go up and make the plays.
04:09Let's chase in motion to the slot, top of your screen.
04:13Burrow looking that direction, but he finds Higgins instead.
04:16Higgins unable to get both feet down.
04:18He's out of bounds, ended up with a football,
04:21but Ronnie Hickman made sure that he couldn't get those feet down in the green.
04:25That's a really nice job.
04:27You can see Ronnie Hickman coming over.
04:28He's got to elevate to get it.
04:30He gets that first one down, but that second one is not down in bounds.
04:36Great look from our crew.
04:39Clearly see the foot on the light, and now third and nine.
04:43Brown's defense wants that stop.
04:46And this is where Zach Taylor did not want to be.
04:49Are these third and long situations,
04:51these obvious passing situations because of that man right there?
04:57And timeout.
04:59Play clock was winding down.
05:01Joe Burrow has to call time.
05:04Timeout.
05:05Cincinnati.
05:06They're first.
05:07Cleveland's defense just two years ago was the number one defense in the league,
05:12and Allison Williams are trying to rekindle that magic here in this drive and in this game.
05:17They are, Kevin, and they're really pleased so far with how they're playing in the back end of this defense.
05:22Defensive coaches telling the safeties they're doing a good job holding their looks,
05:26disguising pre-snap, so important, so difficult against Joe Burrow,
05:30but that's a big reason why they've been able to keep these receivers in check so far today.
05:34Allison, what have you noticed on that sideline from the Browns from a confidence standpoint defensively after that rough year last year?
05:41Yeah, I would say the confidence on the defensive side has been high.
05:44It's been consistent.
05:45The energy has been really upbeat and positive.
05:48Obviously, a bit deflating on the offensive side, but it hasn't affected this defense at all.
05:53Allison Williams, good stuff.
05:54Third down at nine.
05:56For the Bengals against this defense.
06:00Miles Garrett, usually his time to shine.
06:03In a pure passing situation, he gets the hit on Burrow, who gets rid of the football to Jamar Chase.
06:10Incomplete.
06:12Didn't get the feet down.
06:13We saw that on the opposite side with Tee Higgins.
06:16Newsome on the coverage of Chase, and it's fourth down.
06:20This is great anticipation by the defense.
06:23On the call, you're going to run a game to the inside.
06:26So, when you put Miles Garrett on the outside out here, right, you've got all these assets that are going to help.
06:33He's going to loop back to the inside.
06:35So, everything you placed over there, he takes away from you and gets a clean run right at Joe Burrow.
06:49Fourth down and nine.
06:51Brown's defense.
06:53Stepping up in a big moment early in the fourth.
06:57DeAndre Carter.
06:59Let this Rico punt go.
07:01Bounces at the five and will trickle into the end zone for the touchback.
07:06Miles Garrett signed the four-year, $160 million deal in the offseason.
07:13Bill Burrow wishes he were anywhere else than the Browns right now.
07:18You're the next person that sees anybody throw anything onto this field.
07:24Point him out.
07:25Get him out of here.
07:25You don't live in Cleveland.
07:27You don't live in Cleveland.
07:29You know it's a good rivalry when you're playing somebody else and you bring up your rival in that kind of context as Sam Weiss did many, many years ago.
07:39Unbelievable.
07:40That's the way to fuel the rivalry.
07:451989 when Sam Weiss somehow ended up with a microphone on his sidelines.
07:50I don't know how that happened.
07:52Dylan Sampson meets Logan Wilson after about an eight-yard game.
07:56This defense has got to make a stop right here.
07:59You know, we're 12, just inside 13 minutes here in the fourth quarter.
08:04And the one thing that Cleveland has done a really good job here today is controlling the clock.
08:09And that was one of Al Golden's big things to his defenses.
08:12And we've got a great offense.
08:13We can't have him on the sideline all afternoon.
08:16And they've been over there much more than they needed to be.
08:19Second and two.
08:21Samson.
08:22First down.
08:23I tell you, this guy, yeah, you can see why they like him so much.
08:27I mean, he has been fun to watch.
08:29And you made a point, Kevin.
08:30A couple of those catches that he made, those are outstanding.
08:34And this is just really good feel inside.
08:37I mean, he's running through tacklers.
08:40That's T.J. Slayton.
08:41T.J. Slayton was brought in to stuff the run.
08:43And there's Dylan Sampson just kind of bouncing off him.
08:46Just signed their second-round pick, Quinshot Judkins.
08:49He's on the roster with an exemption.
08:53Don't expect to see him play a role in the weeks moving forward at running back as well.
08:58Flacco.
09:00Drifting to the right.
09:02Looking.
09:03And now Fannin adjusting his route.
09:06Makes the catch.
09:07In Bengals territory down to the 45.
09:1122-yard pickup and the rookie making a play.
09:17This is great.
09:18I mean, Joe Flacco is rolling to the right.
09:21So keep your eyes on Harold Fannin.
09:23Everything that he does.
09:23He's going to go over here.
09:24He's going to check down on a short route.
09:26And when Joe goes that way, he just kind of stands there for a second.
09:28He's like, no, no, you've got to move.
09:30You've got a guy right next to you.
09:32You've got to get open.
09:33Run yourself open.
09:34You can see why they like Fannin, too.
09:39There's a lot of talent there and a lot of versatility.
09:41He led all of the FBS football in catches and receiving yards a year ago.
09:46Flacco under heat again.
09:48Fires it to Ford and a good open field tackle.
09:51What a play by Oren Burks.
09:53There was a little space out there for Jerome Ford.
09:56And what a tackle by Burks.
09:58A loss of three.
09:59Yeah, and here's one of those situations, right?
10:02There's an interception for the Browns here this afternoon.
10:05But it's a great play by the Cincinnati Bengals defense.
10:08This is an accident waiting to happen right here.
10:10Your eyes are off of what's going on outside to your right.
10:13And you throw it out there.
10:15Those are the ones that can come back and just ruin a great afternoon for you.
10:19Now Golden told us, Joe Flacco's so hard to get down in the pocket.
10:23Great example of it there.
10:24B.J. Hill had a shot at him.
10:25Couldn't pull him down.
10:27Second and 13.
10:28Flacco throws.
10:29Fannin again.
10:31Catch number six in the rookie's debut.
10:35This one picks up six.
10:36And Allison Harold, Fannin Jr. has had quite the path.
10:40Yeah, we're seeing why the Browns are so excited about this rookie.
10:43A local kid grew up not far from here in Canton, Ohio.
10:46Played just down the road at Bowling Green.
10:48And while they loved what he did there, they had some concerns because Bowling Green didn't huddle a lot.
10:52So they wanted to make sure that he could handle mentally the different things they would ask of him
10:56and the different concepts they would throw his way.
10:58So Kevin Stefanski and a few others made the drive there.
11:01He said after about ten minutes of watching tape with him, he looked at his coaches and was like,
11:06what are we doing here?
11:07This guy clearly has got it.
11:09No doubt about that, Allison.
11:10You've seen it in game one as Judy with a flag down makes the catch.
11:14Excellent tackle by Jordan Battle with that flag thrown at the 49-yard line.
11:23Looks like DeJuan Jones is going to be called for the hold.
11:30Holding offense number 79.
11:33That penalty's declined fourth down.
11:36Sometimes when you're going against Trey Hendrickson, you have no choice but to hold, Darryl.
11:40Yeah.
11:41If you get out of position with him and you can see right there, I think it's a little bit of a pretty nice sell job there by Dre.
11:48You know, his feet went out from underneath him.
11:51I think DeJuan Jones is going to be like, I've held worse than that already during the course of this game and didn't get called.
11:56So now Corey Bohorkas, who led the NFL in punts inside the 10-yard line a year ago, will try to do it again in the season opener.
12:08Jones will let this one bounce at the two and it gets past D.J. Turt.
12:12Or rather, it gets past Jarek Bernard Converse and into the end zone for the touchback.
12:18Cincinnati and Cleveland.
12:21Good one coming down the wire here on Fox.
12:26Flourning love in the beauty lot.
12:28Brown superfans Desiree First Lady Wheeler and Charles Brown Spider Bevel Jr.
12:33They were married.
12:34They both used to tailgate the beauty lot, met as Browns fans.
12:37That passion led them to love and marriage.
12:40Webster Slaughter, who's now an ordained minister, was the officiant in the wedding.
12:44Brown Spider and First Lady now honeymooning at the Dog Pound.
12:49Where else would you rather honeymoon than the Dog Pound?
12:52They have to be the leaders in the clubhouse after week one for superfan in a year.
12:57Call Roger Goodell.
13:009.22 to go.
13:02Cincinnati up by one.
13:07And on first down, Burrow under pressure.
13:10Down he goes!
13:12Guess who?
13:13Myles Garrett with the sack.
13:23It's just, you know, the last one we saw, they had people to help.
13:27He goes inside.
13:28Now he's going to stay outside again.
13:30I mean, there's two, three people blocking him.
13:32And it's funny, when you talk to Jim Swartz and you talk to him about his skill set and what he can do,
13:37he's like, listen, everybody knows he's the game wrecker.
13:40Everybody knows to look for 95 pre-snap.
13:43It's not like he's hiding from anybody.
13:44And that's how good he is.
13:46You've designed a game plan around to minimize his impact, and it's so hard to do.
13:52And Joe Burrow has to call timeout.
13:55As frustrated a timeout call as you will see from a quarterback.
14:008.36 to go in the fourth, and at one point, Bengals lead.
14:08Now this from State Farm.
14:09All preseason, Darryl, the conversation was, how do the Bengals avoid slow starts to the season?
14:16All preseason, everything was adjusted to avoid a slow start.
14:21The pressure's got to be rampant a little bit here.
14:25Second and 16 up by one point in the fourth.
14:30Burrow.
14:32Pocket collapsing.
14:33Garrett again!
14:34Number 11 all-time of Joe Burrow back-to-back sacks for Miles Garrett.
14:42If you could just force him to hold it for a tick, right?
14:48And that's what we talk about.
14:50This is, again, we said at the top, can you find a better combination of rushing coverage
14:57between two players than Miles Garrett and Denzel Ward?
14:59And he's so good.
15:01I mean, Orlando Brown Jr. thought he was going inside on another stunt, and he took his eyes off him.
15:07He comes right back on him and attacks him.
15:11Third down and 22 from the end zone.
15:16Burrow in trouble.
15:17Lunges forward as he goes down.
15:19He avoids the safety.
15:21Isaiah McGuire got him around the ankles.
15:24Burrow's an absolutely dominant defensive possession by the Browns front four.
15:31Well, Jim Schwartz said it all when we met with him on Friday.
15:34This defense will go the way our defensive line goes.
15:38And they have just taken over this game.
15:41Look at the push.
15:42They are all the way back into Joe Burrow's lap.
15:45And he is so lucky that he didn't get his safety.
15:48And one of the cool things he did this year, they had a pass rush camp.
15:51He had Isaiah McGuire come down.
15:53He had Alex Wright come down.
15:55He had Aiden Huntington come down.
15:57Three of his defensive line teammates down there working with Micah Parsons.
16:01You know, all these great pass rushers, you know, that are down.
16:05You know, Will Lewis down there in Texas.
16:08DeAndre Carter with a return of the Bengals territory.
16:13Tyson Anderson on the tackle.
16:176.56 to play.
16:19The Browns already on the edge of field goal range.
16:22And we talk about the slow starts for the Bengals.
16:24And each moment, that pressure, that entire conversation.
16:29It's like the old adage, if you don't, you know, don't talk about the elephant in the room.
16:33And the only thing you can think about is the elephant in the room.
16:36This is the elephant for the Cincinnati Bengals.
16:38And everything they did to address it.
16:41And we'll get into that after this snap.
16:43But there was a lot of structure, scheduling, a lot of changes to prevent this type of game from happening in week one.
16:51Samson to the 39.
16:53And it was the entire approach to the preseason.
16:58Zach Taylor told us it was a little bit of shame on me if we used excuses and we didn't change it.
17:02Well, we talked to him about it last year when they come out of the first two games in 0-2.
17:06And he said there were unique circumstances.
17:09And he didn't feel it necessary for a wholesale change.
17:12And to your point, Kevin, I think that was the biggest thing that Zach, you know, shared with us is, you know, I needed to do that.
17:17I needed to change our schedule.
17:19We went from an afternoon practicing team to a morning practice team.
17:23To Allison's point at the beginning, the starters played during the course of the preseason.
17:28I think one of the big things is that competitive period that she mentioned.
17:31It was a basketball-style competition every single day.
17:36And it was one-on-one.
17:37And the people from the offense and defense competed against each other.
17:41And then they would pick the next two combatants for the next morning.
17:44That's how they started every day.
17:46So there's been so much energy put into avoiding what potentially could happen again today.
17:52And that's losing your season opener.
17:55Again, we mentioned it right out of the gate today.
17:58One-and-eleven in the first two weeks of NFL seasons under Zach Taylor.
18:04They've been tremendous after that.
18:07But it's been the constant slow starts.
18:09And it was the slow start that last year kept this team out of the postseason.
18:13They ended on a five-game winning streak but fell a game short.
18:15Yeah, that New England game.
18:16I mean, you go back and look at just, you know, where's the one game?
18:19Obviously, it's that opener against New England.
18:21And they're staring at saying the same thing down the road this season about the opener against New England.
18:28Second and seven.
18:31Joe Flacco in the pocket.
18:33Pro's looking for Fanon.
18:34It's incomplete.
18:35Coverage from Geno Stone.
18:38And now third and seven.
18:41Before third and seven.
18:42Carissa down.
18:43Back and forth there.
18:45Tight in this one.
18:46One-point game.
18:48Third and seven.
18:49Bengals defense needs a stop.
18:52Browns looking to move the chains.
18:54It's Flacco on the throw to Judy has the first down.
18:58We saw the drop on fourth down last possession.
19:01Jerry Judy made sure to secure this one.
19:04He picks up 13.
19:05And almost the exact play design and really the same coverage.
19:09You press outside a little bit.
19:10You're open and here comes the safety.
19:12And I think that that was one of the things that happened on that other play.
19:15You start to see or you start to hear Geno Stone coming down.
19:19Here's Flacco.
19:20Tried to check that one short.
19:22He had Cedric Tillman in the area.
19:24A little bit of confusion it looked like from the snap.
19:26But it's second down.
19:275.46 to go in the fourth.
19:29There is a flag down.
19:32Ineligible downfield.
19:39Ineligible player downfield.
19:40Offense number 79.
19:43That penalty's declined.
19:44Second down.
19:46Le'Von Jones.
19:48A little too far downfield.
19:50And that's one of the things that they have to clean up this season as well.
19:54You know, the penalties in general, but the pre-stamps.
19:57You know, they led last year.
20:00You know, the turnover ratio, you mentioned that, Kevin, is just unbelievable.
20:03You know, the scoring differential.
20:06You know, just across the board there's things.
20:08And they've been so much better today.
20:09What can they do down the stretch with the game hanging in the balance?
20:12Sampson tries the right side.
20:18Works to the 22 in the arms of Joseph Osai.
20:22Four-yard pickup.
20:24Pivotal play.
20:25Such a big play in this game coming up, Darryl, third and six.
20:28Yes, absolutely.
20:29The ability to convert here.
20:31Take more time off the clock.
20:32Again, what is this Bengals defense going to be in trying to kind of figure out exactly what we've seen here this afternoon?
20:42We haven't seen, you know, pressure where there's a declining thing there with the pressure.
20:47Here's an opportunity for them to step up and start to make a name for themselves.
20:51Third and six.
20:52Flacco looking to the sideline.
20:55Judy is there.
20:56Makes the catch.
20:57Both feet in.
20:59First down, Cleveland at the 13 of Cincinnati.
21:02A pickup of nine.
21:06Yeah, and it, you know, with a huge play here, Kevin mentioned how big this is right there.
21:11And what, Camp Taylor Britt, you've got to move your feet.
21:13I mean, Jerry Judy is coming up on top of you, and you're standing flat-footed.
21:18And that was easy for him to just break across his face and just throw a simple out route.
21:23I do not know why he did not get into a backpedal.
21:27Coming up on four and a half to play.
21:30Browns down one, but in the red zone.
21:35Sampson with the football.
21:37Breaks initial contact, but not much after that.
21:40In fact, no gain on the play for Dylan Sampson.
21:43But the clock continuing to run.
21:46Cleveland down one.
21:48Why are they down one?
21:49Missed extra point.
21:50If you're thinking about a go-ahead field goal, Andre Schmidt, remember, missed an extra point.
21:57It's why the Bengals have the one-point lead.
22:00Now, pushed it right off the star.
22:02You can see this angle's great.
22:04You can see that.
22:04That is outside that upright immediately.
22:08Right about an extra point distance.
22:10If you don't get another yard, you're looking in that general area.
22:13There's Fannin.
22:19Fannin trying to find some room.
22:22Much there.
22:22Well defended by the Bengals.
22:25Pennell and Hill combined on this stop.
22:27Just a one-yard gain.
22:28Yeah, just kind of an extended run play right there with David Njoku moving outside, bringing
22:35a blocker out, and then just throwing that quick little screen to Harold Fannin, Jr.
22:40Darryl's second half has been a big different story for Cleveland.
22:43Seven of nine on third after the one for five at halftime.
22:48A little worse to the NFL on third down a year ago.
22:54A third and nine here for Flacco.
22:57Flacco pumps.
22:59Pressure comes.
23:00Spins away.
23:01Down he goes.
23:02Hendrickson was there.
23:04Shamar Stewart brought him down.
23:07Flacco is sacked at its fourth down.
23:11Yeah, and just take that sack.
23:12Obviously, you're trying to get this thing converted, but the worst thing you could possibly do is
23:17have that turnover.
23:18You're in the pocket.
23:19It's starting to collapse.
23:19Get your two hands on.
23:20You can see Joe right there.
23:22Good ball security in the pocket as that starts to break down.
23:29Andre Schmidt in his first NFL game.
23:34The Lou Groza Award winner for the best kicker in college football as a youngster at Syracuse.
23:40For the lead.
23:42And it is no good.
23:45He missed it wide to the right.
23:49A missed extra point.
23:52A missed field goal.
23:54And a missed opportunity for the Cleveland Browns.
24:02Wow.
24:05Yeah, one of those decisions you make during the course of training camp.
24:09And kind of ironic, it was the P.A.T. that gets you into that position, because that was probably the deciding factor to go with Andre Schmidt over Dustin Hopkins.
24:20And again, both kicks missing to the right.
24:27The margin between a good and bad Sunday is often very slim.
24:35As Chase Brown gets the carry, and Miles Garrett pounces on him at the 24-yard line.
24:42Browns will use one of their three timeouts.
24:51Andre Schmidt in his first ever NFL game.
24:56What must be going through his mind right now?
25:01It's like any player that feels that he let his team down.
25:05It's C.D. Lamb on Thursday night with the drop.
25:09You know, I had a critical fumble in a game that ended up tossing us the game.
25:12I mean, it is the sickest feeling you can imagine, because your mistake hurts so many other people.
25:19And it is hard to shake it off.
25:23And for Andre Schmidt, he's got to, as a kicker, I mean, you've got to be able to get rid of it quick.
25:28Because they have the potential to need you to come back and win this game.
25:32Second and 11.
25:34Burrow to the sideline.
25:35There's T. Higgins out of bounds at the 35, one yard short of a Cincinnati first down.
25:47Again, another big throw by Joe Burrow.
25:50A big cushion on the outside.
25:52Kind of interesting to see that soft with that distance to go.
25:58Got out of bounds, so that stops the clock.
26:02Zach Taylor's team wants to get that first down.
26:08It's Brown with the carry, and he falls forward awfully close, but he didn't get there.
26:14Stacked up at the 35.
26:15Devin Bush on the tackle.
26:18He does not get the first down.
26:20We've reached a two-minute warning.
26:23It's fourth down, Cincinnati.
26:27With two minutes to play in the Battle of Ohio.
26:32A fourth down decision coming.
26:35You planned all season to change your mojo in the early stage of the season.
26:41Fourth and one, they're going to go.
26:43Leave it in the hands of your best group, offense, defense.
26:46Put your trust in Joe Burrow and that offense.
26:48On fourth and one.
26:57Switching Drew Sample.
27:00Motion from Chase.
27:02Will they snap it?
27:07Burrow up to the line.
27:09Nobody will move.
27:12The delay of game.
27:15And a punt coming for Cincinnati.
27:18Delay of game.
27:19Off it.
27:21Five-yard penalty.
27:22The base fourth down.
27:23I tell you what, on that motion by Jamar Chase, the orbit motion when he crossed, came back,
27:30and then went back out, the defender slipped a little bit.
27:33He had him out leveraged.
27:34And you wonder if Joe was just like, oh my gosh, if we could have just, you know,
27:38if it was a play where I could have the ball snap, if we got to a point where we felt like
27:42we could convert, because I really felt like Jamar Chase had got him out leveraged on that motion he ran.
27:50Ryan Rico to punt.
27:53DeAndre Carter with his toes on his 15.
27:59Carter will creep up to the 21.
28:02Fields the punt claimer.
28:03Carter across the 30.
28:06And the Browns will start at the 33-yard line.
28:10One minute and 50 seconds remaining as we welcome you back into the booth.
28:15That's Daryl.
28:16I'm Kevin.
28:16And the Browns with an opportunity to, once again, spoil the early start of the season for the Cincinnati Bengals.
28:23But the biggest question mark of the year for Cincinnati is, what is this defense going to be?
28:27Because, again, they don't have to be great.
28:29They just have to be solid, be good.
28:30Kind of what we've talked about with quarterback play for the Browns.
28:33Here's a great opportunity for them to be complimentary and say, hey, offense, we got your back.
28:39We got your back today.
28:40It was a tough battle with our offense against that Browns defense.
28:44But we're going to close this one out for you.
28:46Flacco on first down.
28:48Tosses short.
28:49Najoku with the catch.
28:51He picks up nine to the 42.
28:54Two timeouts remaining.
28:56Joe Flacco, cool hand at the helm.
28:59He's been in this spot before.
29:0390 seconds to play as he gets the snap.
29:06Flacco.
29:07Juggled, juggled, intercepted.
29:10DJ Turner off the deflection takes it away for Cincinnati and takes away the opportunity for the Cleveland Browns.
29:19Two picks off deflections today.
29:27Today, this one could put it away.
29:31He's had such a good game today to Cedric Tillman at the top of the screen.
29:38Just a little curl route.
29:39He's wide open, bobbles it.
29:42And it's just a great job by DJ Turner being there.
29:45And again, you know, ball disruption.
29:47That's the one thing that Al Golden preaches to his guys.
29:50And you've got a weakness with the Cleveland Browns, right?
29:53They were minus 22 in turnover ratio last year.
29:58You know, continue to make them doubt themselves in those situations.
30:02I mean, two huge takeaways today by that Bengals defense.
30:06Not great, not great, not what Al Golden wants this group to become, but they found a way to help their team potentially earn a victory here.
30:14What a time for DJ Turner's first career NFL interception.
30:20Browns have two timeouts left.
30:22So you can't necessarily kneel it out.
30:29They use one of those two here before the second down play.
30:35DJ Turner II, drafted in the second round in 2023.
30:40Limited last year with that collarbone injury.
30:43He was known best for his speed.
30:45He ran a 4-2-6 at the combine.
30:47Comes up with the biggest play of his young career, the interception, that might change the narrative.
30:56Joe Burrow talked to us about the narrative changing.
30:59His bonus coverage between the Bucs and Falcons coming up here on Fox.
31:03He said the narrative was that they were a Super Bowl contending team.
31:06Then they became a team that scored a lot of points, but didn't win a lot of games.
31:09Yeah.
31:10He wanted to flip that narrative back to somewhere in the middle.
31:13Exactly.
31:13I mean, you go back to 21-22, and it's, you know, finding ways to win.
31:18A gritty team that would find ways to win.
31:20It got to the Super Bowl and got to the AFC Championship game.
31:23And then they just became explosive, and they found ways to lose football games.
31:31And movement by the Cleveland Browns.
31:38Take your pick up front.
31:40Four guys jumped.
31:43Five-year-old penalty to remain second out.
31:55Shelby Harris, Malik Collins, a lot of folks moving up there.
31:59Somebody had to get called.
32:00But how about this defense being able to do exactly what Al Golden challenged them to?
32:07Plus two.
32:07We want to be plus two in the turnover ratio every week.
32:10That's hard.
32:11But that gives you such a great opportunity to win that game.
32:14But to be able to be plus two for 18 weeks?
32:18I mean, I don't know.
32:19You listen to it.
32:20It sounds great, but can you actually go out and do that?
32:23And here they are.
32:24First game of the year with a new defensive coordinator,
32:25and they kind of meet the standard that he challenged them to.
32:28And the timeout used by Cincinnati.
32:41Final timeout for the Bengals.
32:43Second and eight with a minute 20 to play in the fourth coming up.
32:46Let's get a game break with Carissa Thompson.
32:47All right, Carissa, thank you.
32:50Here, a one-point lead for the Bengals.
32:55The Cleveland Browns missing an extra point and a short field goal in this game.
33:01The difference in this game between a potential win and a potential loss.
33:08Andre Schmidt with a lot on his mind today.
33:26Second and eight for Cincinnati.
33:31It's Brown tripped up in the backfield.
33:35Carson Swessinger.
33:36Timeout.
33:37Cleveland, their final timeout.
33:43For Andre Schmidt, a forgettable debut in the National Football League.
33:50Missed extra point, missed field goal, both wide right,
33:55and a one-point game as a result.
33:59He was perfect through preseason, perfect through camp.
34:03Dustin Hopkins was who he competed with.
34:05Hopkins struggled, missed two extra points in the preseason.
34:09They went with Andre Schmidt.
34:11And unfortunately for Cleveland to this point, that decision has not paid off.
34:16No.
34:16And we watched him Friday practice.
34:18He was great Friday practice.
34:19Right down the middle on every kick.
34:21I mean, yeah.
34:28Third down and 12.
34:31It's Chase Brown trying to spin away, and Miles Garrett is there to stand him up.
34:37Grant Delpit helping out.
34:38It's fourth down.
34:41Bengals are going to run this clock down as far as they can.
34:47But Joe Flacco and the Browns offense should have one last glimmer,
34:53one last brief opportunity here in the fourth quarter.
34:57They'll run it down to about 30 seconds.
35:11They'll take the delay of game.
35:12And they'll punt it away and turn it over their defense for one last time.
35:24It was a daunting proposition if you said that about last year's Cincinnati Bengal defense.
35:30Rely on them to close it out.
35:32But Al Golden has said this is a different group.
35:37Zach Taylor confident in this group.
35:40They've come up big today.
35:41Can they do it one last time?
35:50DeAndre Carter waiting at the 10.
35:5530 seconds to go in this one.
36:02Carter will watch it bounce.
36:06It'll continue to roll.
36:08And down at the 1.
36:1119 seconds.
36:13No timeouts.
36:16The best possible scenario if you're the Bengals defense.
36:20Joe Flacco starts from the 1.
36:22Just need 99 yards for the touchdown.
36:25Get yourself into field goal range.
36:27It was interesting on that punt, though.
36:30I mean, you played a traditional thing.
36:32I would have brought my guys inside.
36:34And, hey, either we're going all out to block this kick.
36:37Pull my returner up.
36:38I mean, he couldn't have gotten any worse than it is right now.
36:4719 seconds to go.
36:52Flacco in the end zone.
36:55Rolling.
36:56Throws on the run.
36:58Incomplete.
36:59Down to 13 seconds left.
37:02Second down and 10.
37:13Al Golden.
37:15Two takeaways, two sacks.
37:16Only 49 yards allowed on the ground.
37:21He said they shielded throughout the preseason.
37:25We're not showing you what we're doing.
37:27They've been affected today.
37:33Second and 10.
37:36To the sideline and out of bounds.
37:38That's Jamari Thrash.
37:40Not much there.
37:42Out at the 7.
37:43Eight seconds left.
37:49No time for a methodical drive here.
37:52I mean, it's just so difficult just to get into, you know, field goal range to give Andre Schmidt an attempt.
37:58You would have had to do, you know, Hail Marys, you know, to get yourself down there with no timeouts.
38:04It's just such a challenge here.
38:05And flags fly.
38:09Movement by Cleveland.
38:14False start.
38:15Offense.
38:16It was 79.
38:17Actually gets it to the goal.
38:19Remains third down.
38:20The clock was starting to snap.
38:25Trey Hendrickson thought the game was over.
38:27He thought they'd do a runoff.
38:28But the clock had stopped on the out of bounds.
38:34So one more play.
38:37At least.
38:43Third and eight.
38:47Blacko over the middle.
38:50Juggling catch made by Judy.
38:52Down at the 30.
38:53Time expires.
38:55And the Bengals win the opener.
38:5917-16 Cincinnati gets it done and starts off with an opening game win for the first time since 2021.
39:13And, oh, by the way, that year they ended up in the Super Bowl.
39:20Bengals get the 17-16 win.
39:23We'll be right back to wrap things up and send you out for bonus coverage in a moment.
39:30Bengals get the win.
