00:00For a long time and Robbie would tell me and it's it's something that takes some getting used to for sure 38 yards here for Moody.
00:10A restless crowd watches as Moody splits the uprights again.
00:19Missed the extra point to start the game.
00:25Those last two kicks have looked good.
00:28Right down the middle.
00:30I think the whole key with him is and I talked about it back up confidence because he's certainly got the skills and I don't know a lot about kicking but I don't care if it's a 55 yard or an extra point.
00:44I think the idea is you stroke them all the same.
00:47It's not like you're trying to juice one a little further than the other.
00:50You're trying to kind of feather one on the shorter kicks.
00:53Just stay consistent with the wind up and the swing.
00:57Now he'll get a chance to kick it away.
00:5959 yarder a week ago.
01:02We mentioned it a couple of times.
01:03The game winner in Vegas, Grant Boyer, the new special teams coach.
01:08I mean here with a job to do.
01:10There's no question about it.
01:11Given the 49ers recent special teams performances, histories.
01:15He's got some stuff to figure out at returner because of some injuries.
01:22This guy Moore came in today.
01:24Had several clean punt catches.
01:27Miller-Hines gets out to the 32-yard line.
01:4049ers leading 16-13 now.
01:43Jacob Robinson there on the tackle.
01:51And here comes DJ Uyunglele again.
01:54He's had a really good night.
01:557-9.
01:56Sure has.
01:561-12.
01:57And has had some style points with it.
02:02His younger brother, Mateo, is a really good, you know, what position his younger brother plays?
02:07Defensive end.
02:08Wow.
02:08Which, if I told you, you know, DJ looks like once upon a time he could have played defensive end too.
02:14It's a big young man.
02:156-4, 2-52.
02:18His younger brother, Mateo, is one of the best pass rushers in the country at Oregon.
02:25Pressure up the middle.
02:26Uyunglele.
02:27Oh.
02:28Brendan Rice.
02:29There was a lot of traffic around that ball.
02:31Yeah, that was loaded coverage right there.
02:34And everyone dropped off into zone and loaded the middle of the field.
02:37You'll see Brandon Rice flash in from the right side of your screen right there.
02:41He wasn't even ready for the football with four 49ers around him.
02:50It's great to have Robert Sala back.
02:52Boy, is it.
02:53The clock is low.
03:08Chargers get it off.
03:10And Rice was in a battle with Saran Neal.
03:12It's a Rand Neal one.
03:14And now it's third down.
03:15Yeah, and I'll tell you what, Robert Sala, and who knows, may end up calling more blitzes.
03:21I've certainly seen him dialed up in practice and in some of the games here in the preseason,
03:26certainly the last couple.
03:27But, and they've been able to get home.
03:29You know the ball's coming out quick.
03:31Saran Neal is not his first rodeo in year eight.
03:34He knows the ball's coming out.
03:35You got pressure called up in front.
03:37But, DJ, you unloads it.
03:39Saran Neal just blanket coverage out there on Brandon Rice.
03:53We're under the lay.
03:55Might have been hit, clipped, and he can't connect.
03:58Boy, that flash came in.
03:59Jason, yes, it did.
04:01They're going to get defensive holding on Chase Lucas.
04:03I think they, I think he grabbed the receiver
04:06as he was making that out cut.
04:08Sometimes the flag's just a little patient to see the results of the play.
04:12Holding.
04:13Number 26 in the defense.
04:15Five-yard penalty.
04:17Automatic first down.
04:19The receiver, Jackson, is down still on the field after this play.
04:26Oh, boy.
04:28That's, I didn't see a lot of material restriction
04:32in terms of a hold right there
04:34as he was trying to get to the corner route to the out cut.
04:36Unless he had him up top on the inside.
04:41We just saw the back view.
04:43I think Chase is thinking the same thing I am after looking at it.
04:47He just watched it in 4K.
04:48The biggest 4K screen in the league.
04:51New screens this year.
04:57It's Trey Lance and Justin Herbert.
04:59Looking on.
05:00Trey started the night.
05:01Three series for the Chargers.
05:03Boy, what a career, a young career, Justin Herbert has had.
05:06Most yards, most completions of anybody in pro football in their first five years.
05:11Crunch.
05:11Nick Martin and Curtis Robinson.
05:14Nick Martin is a little slow to get up.
05:16Luke Grimm, the rookie, caught that.
05:18And you can see Martin feeling it at the end of the third quarter.
05:23That is the end of the third quarter.
05:25Time out.
05:28We'll check on Nick Martin while we return here to Santa Clara.
05:31Look at the light show.
05:39New at Levi's Stadium this year just before the fourth quarter begins here in the final
05:44and third preseason game for the 49ers.
05:47Great to have with us in the booth now the president of the 49ers, Al Guido.
05:52And how did the lights get added this season?
05:55You know, George told me for a number of years, Kittle that is,
05:59that he wanted the lights that he saw in college when people score.
06:03And so as part of this $200 million renovation to get ready for not just this season
06:07but the Super Bowl and the World Cup being here,
06:10that's one part of it with the rest of the big boards.
06:12We're real excited to kick it off for our fans.
06:13Well, you know he's a star.
06:14He loves the lights.
06:15Yeah, listen, you know, he gave me a shout-out on one of the podcasts,
06:18so I give him credit for that.
06:19You know, I told him we play a lot of our games at 1 o'clock.
06:22And then he reminded me, hey, we got like six primetime games every year.
06:26And late in the season it matters.
06:28I said, you're right.
06:28You're right, George, you're right.
06:30Good to see Nick Martin back in.
06:31We saw him go off a little gimpy after the end of the third quarter,
06:35but he's back in here on the sequence.
06:36So they're George's lights.
06:37The other thing we've noticed being here now, two games of the preseason,
06:41you can see it every time a player looks up to the largest 4K boards in the NFL.
06:47These look great.
06:48Yeah, they're fantastic.
06:49I appreciate it, guy.
06:50And I will say welcome to the box, man.
06:52I know it's under tough circumstances.
06:54I reached out to Papa today,
06:55and we've done this the last couple years in the fourth quarter.
06:58And I'll just say you're doing an awesome job, man.
07:01It's really good to have you as part of this team.
07:03It's been – I give the York family all the credit.
07:04We put $300 million into this building in the first 10 years of the operation.
07:08To know that we're 10 years removed from Super Bowl 50,
07:11and we're going to host again this February.
07:14And I've had a chance to speak to a lot of our fans and what it means to the community.
07:17We're going to be the only building ever in history to host a Super Bowl
07:21and a World Cup in the same calendar year.
07:23And that would not happen without, frankly, all of our fans, the family, of course,
07:27the public support that we've got from the city of Santa Clara,
07:31and the rest of the public constituents.
07:32It's just a really, really special year.
07:34And, you know, I know 49ers are first, and that's what we're here to talk about.
07:38But I think for all of our fans, it's been fantastic.
07:40Yeah, and the venue is unbelievable.
07:42It looks like he did some stuff down on the field, too,
07:45for the soccer in the corners of the end zone.
07:48What's different? Because it looks different.
07:50Yeah, that's right, Tim.
07:50I mean, honestly, Matt Griner's thrilled because as part of the FIFA rollout,
07:55we had to widen the corners to make it for corner kicks.
07:58But the other thing that we did is we put a sub-air system underneath the field.
08:02And I personally think, look, we weren't great in that first year.
08:05Everybody knows it.
08:05But Matt Griner, in my opinion, is the best in the business as a groundskeeper.
08:09I fully agree with that.
08:10And our field has been great ever since year two.
08:12And it's only going to get better with everything that we did
08:15and invested in that facility.
08:16And that means a lot to our players.
08:18You know, Tim, you know, playing on grass is so much better than playing on turf.
08:22And the ability to do it here, in my opinion, the best service in the NFL does matter.
08:25Yeah, and you know what you're right about is the best surface.
08:28And the practice field is the same thing now and what Griner did over there
08:32and improving the grounds and the grass over there.
08:35Yeah, I mean, you know, it's part of the whole campus.
08:37And I said, like, you know, even though we're only 12 years in, right,
08:41we don't want to rest on our laurels in anything, whether it's on the field of play,
08:45whether it's in our strength and conditioning programs,
08:47whether it's our fan experience in the building, concession stands, retail.
08:51You know, this family, this organization really does want to make sure
08:54that we continue and invest.
08:55And, you know, we do that on the business side.
08:58We also do that on the foundation side.
09:00And that's a lot of what I'm excited for for this Super Bowl.
09:02I mean, $2 billion of economic impact has happened just because Levi's is built.
09:07Another billion will happen just because of the Super Bowl and the World Cup.
09:11And that, I think, is special.
09:12And we wouldn't be here without that.
09:14Boy, that is well said.
09:16I didn't realize it was those kind of numbers
09:17when you start talking about the economics of having the Super Bowl here in the World Cup
09:22and everything that it brings right here to the South Bay and really the whole Bay Area.
09:26Well, you know, we talked about it when we bid on Super Bowl 60 about how much the Bay has changed.
09:31I mean, you know, we went from the oldest non-renovated stadium in Candlestick.
09:35And, look, I loved it.
09:36It's got so many historic moments to then come to Levi's.
09:39And then now people ask me, like, what's going to be different about Super Bowl 60?
09:43And I have to remind people.
09:44I said, well, Chase Center wasn't even there.
09:46And what Joe and Peter and that team did with Chase Center.
09:49And then you look at what Larry Bearer and the Giants have done with Oracle Park
09:53and then the Mission Rock development.
09:55So a lot of the Super Bowl city is going to change dramatically from what happened the last time.
09:59It's going to be a lot on the waterfront.
10:01And then give Mayor Mahan in San Jose a ton of credit.
10:04The changes to SAP and what the Sharks have there.
10:07So I just think the footprint has gotten so much better.
10:10And then you add on to the fact that Apple and Google via YouTube are now partners of the NFL.
10:15Well, to me, there's just not a better region to host these large events in.
10:19And we didn't have that before Levi's.
10:21But give the rest of the sports teams credit because their facilities got a hell of a lot better, too.
10:26Great play there from Nick Martin.
10:27It's important, you know, you bring it up.
10:28For people who don't remember, 10 years ago, everything, all of that week leading up was in San Francisco.
10:33And the city was really buzzing leading up to that Super Bowl.
10:37And I know it probably feels like there's a little juice to try and get this team in their own Super Bowl.
10:43It's happened a few times in the last two years.
10:45Very much so.
10:46Look, it's definitely been a talk of the offseason.
10:48I've talked to John and Kyle about it.
10:49But, look, it's a long season.
10:51You guys know this.
10:52And we've struggled through the preseason with injuries.
10:55It's been widely, obviously, documented.
10:56But it's a long season.
10:57We've got a lot of young guys here.
10:59They know that we're hosting the Super Bowl in this building.
11:02But, look, you know, we've got to get off to a good start with week one.
11:05We've got to finish off tonight really strong.
11:08Get our guys healthy.
11:09Get ready to kick off in Seattle.
11:11We have a tough division.
11:12I know everyone's talked about the schedule, but you've still got to play the games.
11:15That's right.
11:16And I think that our guys are really raring to go.
11:18It's great to see Robert Sala back on this sideline and all the juice that he brings into it.
11:23And I know our fans are really ready to kick off.
11:26And so I would just say support us on the road in those first two weeks.
11:28But then make sure you bring it when the Arizona Cardinals come here for week one.
11:32Yep.
11:32You're right.
11:33And, look, you know, guys left the roster.
11:35Debo Samuel.
11:36There's other guys.
11:36But Brock Purdy signed to the long-term contract.
11:40George Kittle signed to an extension.
11:42Fred Warner signed to an extension.
11:44Trent Williams is healthy.
11:46Fred Warner, I mean, guys on the back end.
11:49Renardo Green coming back year two.
11:51Malik Mustafa will be back in the mix.
11:52There's still a lot of stars on this football team fired up for Ricky Pearsall.
11:57I mean, there's still a lot of good players left.
11:58A muffed punt by Junior Bergen in his battle to make the 53-man roster.
12:05And that one hurts there.
12:06And that's something that he has not done all the training camp.
12:10That's the, I mean, obviously the eight returns in college, tremendous job.
12:14But the job number one catching the football, and that's where it's that knuckler.
12:18Look at that thing falling in on him.
12:21I haven't seen it.
12:22He just got out of position and looked like he lost track of it and just bounced off his chest plate.
12:27That's unfortunate.
12:29You didn't bring Morgan Wallen out with Trent Williams the other day.
12:33Is that something or what?
12:34I'll tell you what.
12:34Barry Bonds and Steve Young the first night, and then Trent Williams and George Kittle the next night.
12:40Yeah, you're right.
12:40And, Tim, you know, on your point, not only did we pay those guys, but those are foundational people, not just players.
12:48And I was so happy for Fred and George and Brock.
12:51You know, of course they deserve it on the field of play.
12:54But I'll tell you, what they do in this community and how much people love them, I can't say enough about the people they are and what they mean in our locker room.
13:02And I've got to tell you this, Al, and I know you've heard it, and I talk to a lot of the players, the ones that come, the ones that go, the ones that end up back here.
13:09And there's a lot of great, and there's some crown jewels, and there's a lot of great franchises in pro football.
13:15And Nick Martin just tattooing people again.
13:18They almost all say the same thing, whether they've been here or they're just getting here.
13:21There is nowhere like this franchise in terms of how the players are treated, how their families are treated, all the things that are offered to these guys.
13:30It's the ability to go beat big time in the community.
13:33There really is no place like this.
13:34Well, that starts with the York family for sure.
13:36And before that, obviously, the DiBartolo family.
13:39We talk a lot about what Eddie D. did here, seeing Jerry Rice in the building every single night.
13:44We always say, Tim, like, I get to come in here.
13:46I stand on the shoulder of giants who came before us, right?
13:48That we know our goal is to put another Lombardi trophy in that case.
13:52But we've got to do it the right way, you know, with the right people.
13:54And Jed's really invested in that.
13:57Obviously, John and Kyle have invested that, being, you know, part of the Bay Area culture.
14:01And, you know, you played.
14:03Those guys police themselves, right?
14:05Because it means something when you step on that field.
14:07There's a standard that this organization has set.
14:10There's a standard that those veterans, it's crazy that I call them veterans.
14:13They still feel like kids to me, that Nick is a veteran and Fred's a veteran and George is a veteran.
14:18It feels like yesterday they were rookies, but they set the standard.
14:22And that's really what we want to be about.
14:23Do you want to bring heat here, Al?
14:25What do you think, pressure?
14:26Bring a fifth and sixth man?
14:28You know, guy.
14:29Third and eight.
14:30Third and eight.
14:30Here we go.
14:33They're showing pressure.
14:35See if they come with bailout.
14:37They're bailing.
14:38We're not going to lay too high.
14:41And it's fourth down.
14:46You know, we were looking at earlier to the point that Tim just made.
14:50Navarro Bowman here with the charges.
14:52We saw Frank at practice the other day.
14:56Patrick Willis.
14:57I know Brent Jones is so excited to be going into the Bartolo Boomer 49ers Hall of Fame later this year.
15:03There's Bo.
15:04So deserving.
15:05As a matter of fact, I was looking up at the stands tonight thinking, how are we going to fit all these numbers of retired guys?
15:10Because, you know, seeing Bowman on that sideline, I got my own feelings about where he should be in that conversation.
15:15And so, you know, it's been a good run here.
15:21And this current roster stacked with guys like that.
15:23Al Guido.
15:23Looking for number six.
15:25The president of the 49ers.
15:27It's great to have him stop by.
15:29And we've got a good finish ahead.
15:30Thai football game here in the preseason finale.
15:33We were just talking to the 49ers president, Al Guido.
15:43Some of what's been going on here around Levi's Stadium.
15:46There's Kittle and Trent Williams.
15:48The night they brought Morgan Wallen out after Steve Young, Barry Bonds did it before.
15:5129 days away from the 49ers home opener against the Arizona Cardinals here.
15:56That's week three.
15:58Super Bowl 60 coming up 10 years after the 49ers hosted Super Bowl 50.
16:03And then the FIFA World Cup group stage in round of 32.
16:07And that's part of interesting, Tim, what you're talking about.
16:10How the area around the field has been modified a little bit to accommodate the FIFA World Cup.
16:15And I think it's everything.
16:17You talk about Super Bowl 10 years ago.
16:18The entire Bay Area is, like a lot of areas, have been modified.
16:22It's going to be quite a treat for hopefully the 49ers, but for all the fans and the two teams that do end up here for Super Bowl 60.
16:32George Kittle still locked in here.
16:3410-27 to go.
16:3516-16.
16:37Helping Jalen Allen get his pads right.
16:41After the Cameron Dicker field goal to tie the game.
16:45Persistent in the good five.
16:47Junior Bergen.
16:49Two new dads right there.
16:51Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey.
17:01Tanner Mordecai.
17:03Play action.
17:05Malik Turner.
17:06Across midfield.
17:08He's been a first down machine.
17:09He has.
17:09He certainly has.
17:10He certainly has.
17:12And I love this for Tanner Mordecai.
17:14It's play action.
17:15It's going to, I mean, everything's good.
17:17Now watch him set his feet and just rip it into the middle of the field right on to number seven.
17:22This is the best Mordecai has played.
17:30I think when you look at it, the whole body of work here since he's had to play most of this because of the injury to Bradley.
17:38Keyshawn Vaughn gets two yards.
17:48And looks like Isaiah Prince.
17:50Isaiah Prince.
17:51Second down coming up for the 49ers.
18:05And we'll step aside.
18:06Healed after this injury.
18:21And you'll see him right in this area.
18:23You'll see that left leg just stretch out.
18:25You saw it get.
18:27Hopefully that looked like those cleats weren't sticking in the ground and got a little bit of slide out of it.
18:33Hopefully he's going to be at no doubt.
18:38Every bit of six foot seven with those long legs, hopefully he's going to be okay.
18:42He's in the blue tent.
18:44And Keyshawn Vaughn sprints forward on second down to pick up a first.
18:50Pick up of 11 yards for Vaughn.
18:55That's straight downhill getting some good blocks.
18:59Here's Conjus Alarcon getting some nice wipeout blocks, getting everybody down the line of scrimmage.
19:07And Keyshawn Vaughn just north and south.
19:11It's best for a running back up inside when you're running inside.
19:14Austin Pleasance, who started the game at right tackle, hasn't played in a while.
19:18He's back in there after the injury.
19:20And here's Vaughn falling forward for four yards and three yards.
19:26It's a nice kickout block.
19:27He got Dunn in there at right guard.
19:29He just got a uniform two days ago.
19:31I think he just got here.
19:33That's hard now.
19:34When you talk about, you know, the synchronicity of offense and 11 guys working together and just players in and out of the lineup that just got here.
19:43What a challenge second down at seven Mordecai in the face of pressure delivers to the tight end, Willis, and this will be very near a first down.
20:06We're going to get the Sony Hawkeye out.
20:08We haven't had it yet tonight, which means you haven't had a chance to guess.
20:12How close it is.
20:16It is close.
20:18It is inches.
20:19Boy, no.
20:20I guess in the third preseason game, there's Mordecai trying to sneak it.
20:25Did he get there?
20:26No, he's going to be short.
20:29Now it's fourth down.
20:36Oh.
20:39Carter Bradley, the Niners' other quarterback,
20:41already limping around the night.
20:46Tim, you made the point earlier, keep Bradley out of sneaks and now Mordecai gets into a sneak and
20:52something happens to him.
20:54And needs the length of the football to keep this drive alive.
20:58In the red zone.
20:59He's an end.
20:59He's six inches from the red zone and eight inches from a first down.
21:02He's got the play clock.
21:06Oh, they just reset the play clock.
21:08All right.
21:12Now he's got the play.
21:13Now the.
21:14Helmet communication is working.
21:16Or it's not.
21:18Nope.
21:19Here's Carter Bradley.
21:20Here we go.
21:23Fourth down in inches.
21:28Limping to that handoff.
21:29The Vaughn.
21:29That is.
21:30Yeah.
21:30He can't move.
21:31Wow.
21:35On fourth and inches, the 49ers third and inches get stuffed.
21:39Mordecai comes up limping and then turn it over on downs.
21:56Stop by the newly renovated 49ers team store, Levi's Stadium, or shop online at 49ers.com.
22:04You know, he thought he's been over there more than once.
22:06Yeah, look at that 75th anniversary jerseys wearing.
22:13See, Cedric the entertainer.
22:15I've seen them all over there.
22:16There's nothing like that store when you're looking for swag and for gear.
22:20They just put a 40 on the big video boards here in the stadium and the crowd loved it.
22:26So after the 49ers kind of haphazardly turn it over on downs, the Chargers take over.
22:34They were still running very hard tonight.
22:36Harden hard all night is Raheem Sanders, the rookie from South Carolina, trying to make this Chargers team.
22:41Got another injury out there for the Chargers.
22:43Well, you feel awful for all these guys that we hate to see anybody get hurt in any game.
22:55But at the end of the preseason, six and a half minutes to go.
22:59And these guys have been grinding through everything and working their way through and, you know, get back on the field.
23:06And to have something happen, it's just, it's unfortunate because this, I mean, it's just a, this is a hazardous game.
23:14It's all part of it.
23:16It's Branson Taylor, the right tackle.
23:19Look for him on the screenplay here.
23:21The rookie out of Pitt.
23:21And that rookie out of Pitt hasn't, hasn't stopped since before his final year in college.
23:32Well, that was weird as he was taking Hector down.
23:35It looked like something, something happened to him.
23:38Jim Harbaugh, over.
23:47Of course, the offensive line news started poorly early for the Chargers when their star offensive lineman, Rashawn Slater, hurt his knee.
23:58Yeah, and just, just paid him, too.
24:00He just got a big deal.
24:01Very good left tackle.
24:02So they'll move Joe Alt over to left tackle.
24:04And, and Pipkins, who was their swing, will slide in at right tackle.
24:09They went and got Makai Becton.
24:10I'm telling you, and I know Harbaugh as, as well as anybody, and played with him in the NFL in, in Chicago.
24:17And worked here when he was, he was coaching and had some great years.
24:20You, you know what he wants to do.
24:22He wants to get in heavy sets and pound the football at you and run it.
24:27Thus, Najee Harris coming over in free agency.
24:31Marianne Hampton, their, their first rounder out of North Carolina.
24:34And then manage risk for the quarterback.
24:37And they have upgraded weapons for Herbert.
24:39So, it all starts and stops for, for Harbaugh teams at the line of scrimmage and being able to get people blocked.
24:47Second down at five.
24:48We're going to a leg.
24:49Going through the progression and throws it right to Curtis Robinson.
24:53Robinson all the way back for a 49ers touchdown.
24:57I am so happy for seeing Rob, Curtis Robinson.
25:04You know, guy, I am a firm believer that good things happen to good people.
25:08And C-Rob, with what he's been through, and the ACL tear last year, just before he was going to get an opportunity, is on the receiving end of a gift.
25:22Here he is.
25:22You're going to see him just slide right out to his spot.
25:25Eyes on the quarterback.
25:26I mean, I, I, I, I don't know what DJU is looking at.
25:31That in cut right behind C-Rob.
25:33He's in perfect position at his landmark.
25:36I think maybe getting bumped a little bit, but that was an ill-advised throw right to 59.
25:42Who punches it in for the pick six?
25:44It was September 27th of last year.
25:47He tore his ACL in practice.
25:50What a road back for him.
25:52He's made some big plays on special teams.
25:56And well-liked and well-respected around here for just him.
25:59He's just been a grinder.
26:01Well, he was the 49ers nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award last year.
26:08Which tells you something to be nominated for that award in a year you're not even playing.
26:14Yeah, and this is his fifth year.
26:16He's bounced around.
26:16He's a Stanford guy.
26:18He's from, you know, the area.
26:21Bounced around practice squad, on and off practice squad.
26:24And, and, boy, he is right in the mix to get that sixth linebacker spot.
26:31And hopefully that's going to help him do it.
26:35Now Moody for the extra point.
26:38And it is good.
26:44Imagine what his last 11 months have been like, as Tim said, just before he's about to get the opportunity to start.
26:52He tears his ACL at a Thursday practice.
26:55Yeah, in a pre-practice drill for special teams on air.
26:59It was just buzzards luck for him.
27:01And he's in a good spot mentally.
27:05I, I try to have conversations.
27:06He is serious about his craft now and getting better.
27:10And I'll tell you what, if you, you look at that 6'3, 235, if you look up linebacker in the dictionary and there's pictures, he's going to look like Curtis Robinson.
27:17Oh, you can just feel it emanating off of him.
27:35Had a big special teams tackle here last week against, uh.
27:39Look at Johnny Holland, his coach.
27:41You coached him how to hit, go right to that landmark.
27:43Yeah.
27:43Johnny, I know Johnny's like, remember I told you, you go right to that little hook right there.
27:47It's going to be there for you.
27:49He threw it right to him.
27:53He's had plenty of time to catch his breath, too.
27:55He's saying, thumbs up, I'm ready to go back out.
28:01So the 49ers now take the lead here.
28:036-0-6 to go.
28:06Oh, boy.
28:06Nick Martin on special teams.
28:10He has turned up the hit stick tonight.
28:14The hit stick with a lot of juice.
28:17Oh, my goodness.
28:19Flying around on defense.
28:21Making plays on special teams.
28:23First, you've got to defeat the block right in front of you.
28:26Boy, he can close the gap in a heartbeat.
28:30His returner's like, boy, how did he get on me that fast?
28:34Seventh tackle.
28:35It's a big deal for him to be able to contribute on special teams.
28:36No question.
28:37No question.
28:38Because he's not, as it looks right now, we'll see as the season goes on how much he really develops in terms of what he's looking at.
28:45He is still just playing on skills.
28:49And it's showing up.
28:49His best pathway and his biggest contributions early in the year is probably going to be on special team.
28:56Naheem Miller-Hines chased down.
28:59Is that Curtis Robinson again?
29:01No, it's Gibson.
29:02Excuse me.
29:02That's Travis Gibson.
29:03I'm reading 56 and 59 upside down.
29:06Gibson with his own celebration.
29:08Boy, what a play by him.
29:10Just trying the old crack toss.
29:11They're going to try to crack him.
29:13He's like, nope, I'm going to cross the face
29:15on Tucker Fisk and chase this thing down
29:19from the inside out.
29:22I've got to appreciate the way these guys are battling, right?
29:31There are precious few roster spots left.
29:34Roster's cut down to 53.
29:351 o'clock Pacific time on Tuesday.
29:39Uyungle-Lay.
29:40Pressure from both sides.
29:42And Stills able to get it away, but it's broken up.
29:44Saran Neal.
29:45I mean, you talk about the competitive spirit
29:51of battling for roster spots.
29:54Robert Beal, Travis Gibson, both probably battling
29:58for one of those last defensive end spots.
30:00Look at both of these guys turning it up.
30:03Trying to have a Saturday evening meeting at the quarterback.
30:09And now it's third down and 12.
30:12With Saran Rapp on the back end.
30:14Saran Rapp.
30:16I've used that before.
30:17Not on air, though.
30:18That was good.
30:18Oh.
30:19Was that?
30:19That was good.
30:20Inadvertently stolen?
30:22No.
30:23Play clock roll.
30:25Uyungle-Lay gets it away.
30:26Oh, pressure from Valdez who trucks him.
30:29That gets thrown incomplete.
30:32There's another guy battling.
30:39I love this.
30:40And here he is, 55, working.
30:44A twist.
30:45A three-man twist on the inside.
30:47Wraps it tight.
30:48And I love the fact that it was a legal hit.
30:50Didn't put his helmet right through the chest to the guy.
30:52Turned his head to the side.
30:53Did it all how you're supposed to do it.
30:55By the book.
30:57Boy, he's worked his tail off since he got here as a free agent.
31:01Fired up for him.
31:01Junior Bergen has not had many opportunities to punt return.
31:05He muffed one earlier and lost it.
31:09And now flags.
31:12Junior's going to take a practice catch.
31:15False start.
31:15Number 54, offense.
31:18Five-yard penalty.
31:19Fourth down.
31:20Now Junior Bergen is just dying to make a play here.
31:23Eight punt returns for touchdowns in his college career.
31:29An FCS record at Montana.
31:31J.K. Scott now from his end zone.
31:47Well, you'd love if they get some good blocking.
31:48They're double bison, both gunners.
31:50So, Graham Boyer's counting on these guys.
31:53And some blocking for Junior.
31:55That ball is hanging on the moon, and Bergen Fair catches it at the 42.
32:02That was way up.
32:03J.K. Scott has got a leg.
32:06Yeah, they're in pretty good shape with their kicking department, that's for sure.
32:1046 yards on that boot.
32:13But now the 49ers with five minutes and two limping quarterbacks will see it's Bradley back out.
32:19Mordecai was gimpy on the last drive.
32:22Bradley gimpy on the opening drive of the day.
32:24They've gone back and forth tonight, the only two quarterbacks in uniform.
32:28And now the 49ers trying to execute a little five-minute offense.
32:31Yeah, let's see him take the air out of the ball and just salt this thing away.
32:41Keyshawn Vaughn.
32:45Four-yard.
32:4649 days, we mentioned a couple of times before the Cardinals are here for the season open.
33:00The 49ers last year went one and five in the division.
33:04Four of those losses by one score.
33:06Those four losses by a combined 13 points.
33:10And two of their first three games are in the NFC West to open it up this year.
33:15And that's why I've talked a lot about special teams this preseason.
33:19You think of the Ram game early in the year, and that was a special team's victory for them.
33:24And then the Arizona game here, the first one, before the one at the end of the season,
33:28when a lot of guys didn't play because of injury.
33:30And Arizona was able to trounce the 49ers pretty good in that game.
33:35But remember, I think it was the Arizona game, Moody got hurt on the kickoff
33:38and had that lower leg injury, and it was just a comedy of errors.
33:41And it's a big reason why Brent Boyer is here now coaching up these special teams.
33:48Tariq Owens is in the game.
33:51We saw Brendan Rice under Jerry Rice on the other side for the Chargers.
33:55There is Tariq who had his first preseason catch last week for the 49ers.
34:01He's trying to set up the screen on third down to Vaughn.
34:03Boy, just a little bit of hesitation.
34:06He was thinking about going back inside.
34:08If he just drops steps to the outside and chews up that grass,
34:10he's got an opportunity for a few more yards.
34:13Jim Harbaugh takes a timeout.
34:173.32 remaining.
34:19First charge timeout at a half.
34:21Game clock operator, please reset the game clock to 3 minutes, 33 seconds.
34:29So two left for the Chargers, knowing they've got to get a touchdown.
34:33Came down to the wire last week.
34:42Two weeks, you know, the whole, we mentioned Mikel Williams, all looking forward to seeing him.
34:47CJ West, we'll see the other rookie, highly drafted defensive line along with Alfred Collins.
34:53Both Williams and West with those hyperextended knees early.
34:57But, you know, their roster spots are safe.
35:00There's some other guys here these next few days.
35:02It'll be interesting.
35:03And, again, we mentioned earlier, but just because you have the 53, then there's more cuts.
35:07Then there's more options.
35:08Yeah, and something tells him, you know, a lot of new and young players.
35:12The bottom end of the roster could be getting manipulated really a good portion of the season is just the way they do it.
35:18Luke Grimm off his face.
35:20Another muff.
35:21The ball's still loose.
35:23And the 49ers recover it.
35:26Chad Surratt.
35:29Rolling on the field.
35:31As the kick was muffed by the receiving team.
35:35Recovered by the kicking team.
35:36That was another right in the grill shot right there.
35:39I mean, you just, what, you hate to make excuses, but you've seen three months tonight.
35:56But from both teams, we've seen three months.
35:59I just wonder if the wind has been.
36:01Yeah, that's a good point.
36:03Misjudging it while it's up in the air.
36:05That's certainly what happened to Junior Bergen.
36:10If one got away from him, and then the two right right in the face match, you probably just misjudged it because of the wind.
36:17I don't think that flies in the special teams meeting.
36:19It's not going to work.
36:20Yeah.
36:21I'm trying.
36:22Harbaugh's going to take another time out here at 315.
36:2949ers just trying to keep this in field goal range now.
36:32That's a tough night for the rookie, Luke Grimm, from Kansas.
36:36Game pod, operator.
36:37Please reset the game.
36:38And think about this now for the L.A. Chargers.
36:42They'll be getting ready for a trip to Brazil, right?
36:45They open up down in Brazil.
36:47They've got Keenan Allen back a couple of weeks ago.
37:01Keenan Allen still got juice.
37:03I can tell you that.
37:04He's still got a little shake to him and his route running.
37:08Cal product, year 13.
37:11Year with the Bears, and now back with the Chargers.
37:14He's going to throw.
37:24Bradley's got T.O.
37:25Tariq Owens scores!
37:29Owens!
37:34The first touchdown of his professional career.
37:38In the uniform is where his dad caught so many.
37:46Happy for him.
37:47He has not stopped working.
37:49He was here last year on the practice squad.
37:51He's been grinding all summer.
37:52He comes out of a tight alignment.
37:54He's just going to run the over route.
37:55And he's open and Bradley rolling out to his right, sees it, puts it right on him.
38:02Six points.
38:04There's still some time left.
38:06We'll see what Brendan Rice does, but maybe it's bragging rights for who knows how long.
38:10Owens, Owens, Owens, Owens, Owens, he caught it.
38:17And Moody the point after.
38:23That's cool.
38:25He's been working so hard.
38:27He has.
38:28Remember, he was part of an open tryout, not this past 2024.
38:31Right.
38:31Here on this field, local tryout, a number of players, like a local pro day.
38:40And T.O. was here that day.
38:42And, you know, he's got a big smile here to see.
38:45Yeah.
38:45And you know what?
38:46He's not here because he's T.O.'s son.
38:48He's here because he's earned the right and he works his tail off.
38:52Period.
38:52I think of all the highlights, all the moments of Dad.
39:0681 touchdowns as a niner for Terrell, the Hall of Famer.
39:11I know it's a preseason touchdown, but it's a touchdown.
39:14That's right.
39:15And a lot of hard work rewarded there for Tariq.
39:17And Klay Kubiak's saying enough of this running.
39:23Calling the plays tonight.
39:41And good coverage from Isaiah Hodgins on Naheem Miller-Hines.
39:45With Nick Martin-Kane.
39:46Nick's trying to get any type of action.
39:49He wants more.
39:54Thomas Morstead, John Weeks, the cutter and long snapper.
39:58There's Hodgins.
40:05Nick Mark got turned up after he went limping off the field.
40:12Well, you can see when it went.
40:14And Robert Sala knows this.
40:15Robert Sala, you talk about linebacker coaches.
40:17That's where Robert cut his teeth in pro football.
40:19And he and Johnny Holland do a great job with those guys.
40:22When you match up that foot speed and those skill sets to go with aptitude in terms of what he's looking at
40:29and understanding pro football and what teams are trying to do to him, the sky will be the limit for Nick Martin.
40:35Jaylin Graham racing to go push Uyung to lay out of bounds with a first down scramble.
40:39Because there's a lot to it, guy.
40:41It's not just on line up and play and go get the football.
40:43I mean, there is a lot to it in terms of the responsibilities and the technique and where you're supposed to be and then where you end up and what they're trying.
40:50And it's, I mean, it's just hard for young players.
40:53And Robert knows this.
40:55He's, I mean, I don't care.
40:57And the D-line is probably the aegis in terms of the back seven because D-line, and there's still a lot to that.
41:02But these linebackers and defensive backs, you better have a Ph.D. in football.
41:06It is not easy.
41:12That is going in and caught for a first down.
41:14It was interesting hearing Tatum Bethune this week talking about the major difference between year one and year two, the linebacker.
41:22And a big part of that, he gave credit to Fred Warner for teaching him so much about the game.
41:27He said he went up to Fred, said, I want to do it like you.
41:31Here's Uyunglele, and there's Brendan Rice, son of Jerry Rice.
41:35And Fred said, get your nutrition and your hydration right, and then come back and talk to him.
41:39So Tatum cut out the Swedish fish, his guilty pleasure, got himself in great shape.
41:45And Tatum Bethune's going to make it.
41:49You know what I love about Fred Warner and just how Fred's mentality is.
41:58Flag comes in.
41:59Saran Neal there.
42:00And they're probably going to get some type of a foul over there.
42:04And Fred has said this many times, but the way he works and what he does is you can't step in.
42:11There is no foul for defensive pass interference.
42:13The pass was deemed uncatchable.
42:15You cannot skip steps.
42:16And Fred says, I will not skip steps.
42:18He does the same thing, preparation every day, day in, day out.
42:21You talk about the nutrition and the hydration and taking care of your body.
42:25He said, I'm not a finished product, and I never will be.
42:30Think about that.
42:31And that's the mindset of Fred Warner.
42:33I'm not a finished product, and I never will be.
42:38Kind of says it all.
42:39There is no mountaintop.
42:42That's pretty incredible.
42:43Yep.
42:44It explains why he seems to get better, even through some injury last year, and still played at such a high level.
42:51And I remember his rookie year at Arizona, it was like.
42:53But as the game is slowed down, and he plays without thought, and plays with anticipation, and, you know, has that educated guess, down in and down out, based on all the indicators.
43:04What's the down and distance?
43:05What's the formation?
43:07Who's in the game, personnel-wise?
43:09Fred's got, he's so studied up.
43:11And there's Dee Winters, his teammate, right next to him.
43:14He's going to be huge, I think, in replacing Dre Greenlaw.
43:16Both of those guys playing off each other, but if Fred can play without thought, and have all those indicators, and get a hint of what's coming, and share it with his other guys, it's, you know, this defense is going to fly around.
43:28It does seem like Dee Winters has taken a step this year.
43:30No question.
43:30Year three.
43:31The light is going on for him.
43:35Four seconds before the two-minute warning.
43:39E.J. Wendell, I thought the play clock should have been reset, but it's a delay game.
43:42Delay a game.
43:44Offense.
43:44Five-yard penalty.
43:46First down.
43:5222 combined penalties.
43:5511 apiece tonight.
44:01It's been fun watching these guys battle, for sure, and with roster spots on the line, and, you know, there'll be guys that are cut that end up on other teams.
44:11There'll be guys that are cut that won't play football anymore.
44:13There'll be guys that are cut that are brought back on the practice squad.
44:15But I really appreciate the competitive spirit across the board on both sides of the ball.
44:20And, you know, uh, we're going to get another foul for you.
44:24Now, they're going to get another foul on Neal.
44:27pass interference number 33 defense ball be placed at the spot of the foul automatic first down
44:39sorry neil's hot i'll tell you what he's put together now from top to bottom and he can play
44:47corner but he is here to be a specialist on on special teams over 2 000 special team snaps
44:54he's missed two games in seven years no he is great at it last year in miami six years in buffalo
45:02available he can scrap to one of eight kids he has seven brothers
45:13well he is one of seven brothers
45:14this is brendan rice and he cannot match kariq owens and we hit the two minute warning and it looked like
45:29he had to stop at least a step on chase lucas that ball just outside he couldn't go get it
45:43so 49ers with a
45:4624 point burst here in this second half to lead the chargers 30 to 16. nick martin's been flying around
45:5449ers trying to put the finishing touches
46:01on back-to-back wins to close out the preseason
46:12second down and 10 here for the chargers under two minutes
46:15and nick martin breaks that up it was bouncing off the hands
46:27of the intended receiver thomas yasmin
46:31it is look at nick already knows he's man coverage he's got this swing going out there
46:37just get out there and he is closing the distance
46:41and he has been had i mean
46:44probably could have pulled that in it would have been for a minimal gain but
46:47i'm telling you the speed kills and nick martin has got it
46:50third down and ten play clock at two
47:08and there's luke grimm did not go down and is able to get very close to the line the game just shy
47:15but after that initial hit he kept his feet yeah jacob robinson went down low on him thought he was
47:20going to knife through those legs and chop him down and you're right he never did go down
47:29and the charger was able to pick up the first with raheem sanders
47:34first down and ten end zone shot too high
47:51that was a throwaway luke grimm luke grimm was just covered up by mahoney who
47:57had the big interception to give him the opportunity against the raiders last week
48:02another guy that's just gotten better just been here grinding
48:06got here last year as an undrafted free agent
48:10out of vanderbilt
48:11was released already once this year during training camp
48:14i mean the the thick skin and the mental toughness these guys have to have is
48:19people always talk about the physicality of the game the strain emotionally and mentally
48:24guy is it's it's unbelievable
48:30second down back to graham and he's got it for the touchdown so
48:35graham who's muffed two punts today
48:39responds with the touchdown catch
48:41and the chargers pull with an eight with a minute left well just to the point on the mental toughness
48:46tenor mordecai who did not have a great first preseason game
48:51and then was not on the team last week in the preseason
48:55been released and signed twice by this team 10 of 13 tonight
48:59with a touchdown pass yeah and and responded and that's what you want to i mean look guys are going
49:05to go ups and downs especially guys that are undrafted and trying to make their way in this league
49:10but you just want to see guys continue to handle the adversity and develop
49:14not make the same mistakes over again make some plays at crunch time
49:19and you cannot mimic game action no matter how hard you practice
49:23well something you don't get to practice a lot is the onside kick
49:29well the chargers would expect set one up here
49:34boyer be calling out the hands team i'd be shocked if
49:38jim harbaugh didn't try to on downside it here
49:42down the score
49:44one on one to go
49:47with great situational opportunities for
49:49for the coaches on both sides for them to work their onside and for
49:54brent boyer to get the hands unit out there
49:56with so many guys without uniform today this will not be the real hands unit there's probably
50:05one or two guys that right don't have hands that'll be out there
50:08be like ryan you're out there get out there what is ryan doing out let the ball go by you and block
50:17sky more and junior bergen on that third level tarik owens and malik turner on the second level
50:35for the 49ers cameron dicker's gonna put it down there's no more surprise onside kick of course
50:44so what kind of magic dicker's got with this onside a lot of it is how good these guys are
50:54getting the english on those kicks or getting the right kind of bounce
50:57isaiah hodgens he's right in the right in the line preparing himself tonjas in there
51:14just had to pick his mouthpiece up off the grass
51:18this is right at tonjas and he softly takes it to the turf
51:33i think tonjas has made his made this football team this year i really do and it's not just that
51:40obviously i mean he has done a lot of good things on offense
51:43he's been here since last year he's a local kid from los gatos high school went to
51:48went to cal was doing good in chicago early in his career until he got hurt came here and i'm gonna
51:55tell you he has no problem getting open he's got a lot of foot speed
51:58he's had to show that he can block this year he's been able to do that in the preseason clearing the
52:03way on some of those isolation runs up inside great opportunity for tonjas to get him a game day
52:10uniform here with the 49ers well and they were both available quarterbacks are going to limp
52:16towards the locker room the 49ers with some great plays on special teams on defense
52:22pick six from curtis robinson and they're going to beat the chargers and then turn the page
52:30i'm sure a lot of the code did you know robert sala said it this week yeah we start thinking about
52:34seattle but we owe it to the guys fighting for roster spots absolutely get them ready for this game
52:39against the chargers as well but the seahawks are up next two weeks from tomorrow in seattle
52:46the regular season will begin big hug for tarik owens who's taking a football home with him tonight
52:52after his first professional touchdown and the two coaches that sit third and fourth on the 49ers
52:59playoff wins let's shake hands and the preseason done for so many of the rookies
53:07like mick martin
53:09mucin catching up with his old coach
53:12the 49ers beat the chargers here in the final preseason game 30 to 23 back with more from levi's after this
53:22so
