00:00welcome back to SoFi Stadium set for action between the Chargers and the Saints as we check
00:10in for the first time today with a third member of our crew Jamie Maggio Noah Dan thank you so
00:14much well the Chargers defense is looking to approve upon a season in which they allowed the
00:18fewest points in the league defensive coordinator Jesse Minter told us what he's looking for today
00:24three things emphasize physicality communicate well and execute regardless of the play call and
00:29he loved the physicality he saw in that Hall of Fame game as for game-to-game improvements
00:33Minter's looking for the basics speed of the game seeing things on the field and tackling it in terms
00:38of individual playing time he said it's going to be matchup based and he wants to leave guys in
00:42long enough to allow them to get on a roll I'm going to say you guys are on a roll already back
00:47up to the booth all right Jamie we appreciate it and appreciate you joining us on that roll as we
00:53take a look at the two quarterbacks that we're expected to see for the majority of this game
00:56for the Chargers Taylor Heineke is going to get the start after Lance started and played
01:00excellent football last week in the Hall of Fame game against Detroit Heineke will get about two
01:06series and then Lance will take the bulk of the work from that moment on and is excited to get some
01:11more game action the Chargers did win the toss elected to receive so Blake Groupie is going to boot
01:16it away and the Chargers will get the football first remember they kicked last week to Detroit and
01:21forced a fumble on the opening kickoff so Naheem Miller-Hines and Ahsan Haskins will be deep to
01:27return for LA that fumble they forced one of five turnovers that they forced against Detroit in what
01:36was a dominant effort in Canton Ohio eventually a 34 to 7 victory in favor of LA of course some slight
01:44tweaks the dynamic kickoff this year a touchback changes it to the 35 yard line as opposed to the 30
01:51so special teams coordinators have been a lot more upfront about trying to get it into that landing
01:55zone and this will be returned by Miller-Hines just shy of the goal line he had a big return of 39 yards
02:01last week another one he busts ahead of the 35 and a great start for this Chargers offense as we see
02:07Taylor Heineke for the first time yeah he's in his second year with the Chargers and 11th season in
02:14the NFL but he's been with six other teams got a lot of experience played very well for the Washington
02:20Commanders just a couple of years ago as a starter as you said Noah he will play the first couple of
02:26series and then we'll see Trey Lance but this is a big opportunity as this competition is hot at the
02:32backup quarterback spot it has really heated up as a result of last week's Hall of Fame game where Lance
02:38played just carefree and more so just impressive football as Vidal gets the first carry and picks
02:45up for today's players to watch are brought to you by X Dem V and Chargers have a number of guys that
02:53are going to be out there today that are vying for legitimate playing time come the regular season
02:56this season and Jim Harbaugh gave us a few names on this offense in particular the impressive rookies
03:02and Lambert Smith and Gadsden yeah and offensive lineman Jamari Salyer could be important too especially
03:09with the injury to Slater second play on this series looked like maybe a jump from New Orleans
03:16on the extension Heineke put it on the money but Conklin couldn't bring it in and we'll see what this
03:22penalty looks like as we'll hear from our referee for the first time today Craig Rolstad
03:28yeah as a quarterback you see the offside so the first thing comes to mind hey let's throw one up
03:40and it looked like Heineke wanted to do that coverage was too good so he had to come off of
03:45that but here's the obvious infraction into the neutral zone and as a quarterback you love to see
03:51this especially if you don't hear the whistle blow Chris Rumpf the former charger with the early
03:58penalties so now second down and two for LA another handoff bounce it to the outside Vidal was dangerous
04:04last week and gets it into New Orleans territory on his second carry of the day picks up nine and a
04:09fresh set of downs yeah really good jump to the outside he looked like he wanted to go off tackle
04:16watch him see the vision to the outside good pin block there by Matlock and that gets him that
04:22extra yards to pick up the first down Matlock is an interesting story isn't he both a two-way player
04:28but mostly wearing that number 44 we'll see him on offense at fullback well you see during training
04:33camp most guys were either wearing a blue or a white jersey and Matlock got black because he's the only
04:39guy who's playing both sides of the ball really impressive last year in his first year as a semi-regular
04:45fullback play action Heinecke over the middle open conflict just a little too high he had him beat and had
04:52Conklin with a step just couldn't connect
04:54a game of inches isn't it that ball thrown about four inches too far and
05:02Conklin not quite able to time his jump to bring that one in
05:06good to see Conklin out there though one of the
05:10major acquisitions from this offseason along with Najee Harris in the backfield they expect
05:15Conklin to be a big part of a tight end room that has gotten busier and busier for the addition of the rookie
05:21Conklin as well end up up the middle and the game of five for Hassan Haskins
05:28Haskins of course played at Michigan for Harbaugh
05:32so he has knowledge of the offense experience in the offense and he'll be in competition for that running back spot
05:40throughout the training camp as they await the return of Najee Harris
05:46Jim Harbaugh
05:47Know what he loves to do in terms of the running game along with Greg Roman that offensive line
05:52Marion Hampton is a lock we know that he's going to be out there early and often during the regular season
05:56Najee Harris as well but that third running back spot there are five different players vying for it all of them
06:02have cemented themselves during training camp as Haneke unloads it's incomplete he had
06:08Keiondre Lambert Smith looks like he might have put it near his chest and Lambert Smith can't reel it in
06:13fourth down upcoming and a likely punt for the Chargers yeah I think Isaac Yomden got his hand in there
06:19good crossing route good sharp route that time but there's the punch out perfect timing by Yomden
06:26by Yomden
06:28Embert Smith the star really from last week's game against Detroit the touchdown a couple of impressive pitches also drew a penalty
06:35has been one of the standouts during training camp for the Chargers as J.K. Scott will come on for his first punt of the day
06:43and Dante Pettis is back to return it for New Orleans
06:47a lot of hang time fair catch called for and made just inside the ten
06:51for this New Orleans offensive start at the 33-yard boot from the veteran J.K. Scott
06:56and Jim Harbaugh's defense will make its first appearance at home during this preseason game number two for the Bullets
07:06Chargers stall have to punt it away so scoreless just a couple minutes into this first the keys of the game are sponsored by your Southern California Jeep dealers
07:15yeah the Chargers have got to move on from Slater's injury and then build on that solid game ahead against Detroit last week
07:22and again it carry on nobody expected them to win 11 games last season
07:26but that's the momentum they're trying to build
07:29Spencer Rattler getting the start of quarterback for New Orleans
07:32we'll see the rookie Tyler Shuck as well as the third year pro Jake Hayner
07:36to the air on first down Rattler will dump it down Kendra Miller finds a crease
07:41and picks up nine on first down to the nineteen
07:45let's look at our players to watch brought to you by X Demphe
07:49on the defensive side of the ball similar to what we said offensively
07:52the guys that are gonna make an impact on the regular season will be out there
07:56yeah Tarheep still another surprise from last year
07:59Caleb Murphy had that fumble cause last week on that opening kickoff
08:04and Caldwell
08:06great competition at a defensive line
08:08Jesse Minner says Jamar Caldwell has improved as much as anybody over the last two weeks of training camp
08:13Miller to the outside he's chopped down
08:15what a stop
08:17no gain on the play
08:19and from the secondary there is Tarheep still like a bullet to make it
08:23watch number 29 read this and then explode beat the block of number 10 there
08:28and then just take the legs out from the running back
08:31tremendous play
08:34you don't expect some corners to come up and make that type of physical play
08:38but still is that type of player
08:40he really had an excellent rookie season
08:43as just a fifth round pick out of Maryland
08:46meanwhile there was a bit of a slow get up on an injury
08:51the former charger will clap appears to be OK as he's helped off the field
08:56so this Chargers defense Jamie talked about it right off the top
08:59led the league in points against last year just 17.7
09:03they were seventh in passing defense at 206.9
09:06now it's about building on that
09:08and the one thing Jesse Minner also told us is
09:10last year was a lot of install and
09:12just getting everybody comfortable with what they did at Michigan this year
09:15they could do a lot more self scout
09:17they understood what teams did to attack them
09:19and they tried to plug up those holes through training camp
09:22third and two Rattler to the outside
09:24wide open catch is made
09:26and dumped out of bounds Cedric Wilson Jr.
09:2921 yard pick up to move the sticks
09:32now you just don't get that wide open by yourself
09:34this has to be a busted coverage
09:36see there's nobody on the outside
09:38Cedric Wilson raises his left hand
09:41and yells at the quarterback throw me the ball
09:44big game for the Saints
09:47maybe a miscommunication Ben St. Juice
09:50and R.J. Mickens the rookie both in the general vicinity
09:54so fresh set of downs Brandon Cook's in motion
09:57Rattler looking to throw again
09:59now he looks to escape up the middle
10:01he picks up some positive yardage
10:02gets it across to the 45 and a gain of 6
10:05Marlowe Wax the rookie out of Syracuse makes the tackle
10:08New Orleans with a first year head coach
10:11and a familiar face here in Los Angeles
10:13the young 36 year old
10:16recently 36 year old Kellen Moore
10:18former offensive coordinator two years ago
10:20here with the Chargers won a Super Bowl as the O.C.
10:22last year with the Eagles
10:24and now trying to make his mark as the head man
10:26he's been a name that's been tossed around
10:28it feels like forever
10:29finally getting that opportunity in New Orleans
10:31second down and off Miller stumbles forward for the first down at midfield
10:40down to get a look this Saints offense
10:46in rhythm early and it's a lot of relationship between these two teams isn't there no it would
10:53yes Kellen Moore and of course defensive coordinator former head coach of the Chargers Brandon Staley you
11:00kind of the revenge game or union game how would you put it
11:04yeah revenge I think revenge is always the best way to sell
11:08play action for Rattler deep drop pressure comes hit as he threw it towards the sideline and out of bounds
11:14he took a shot in the backfield as the Chargers pass rush did get there just about a half second late
11:20second down and ten upcoming here's those two that you mentioned
11:24Kellen Moore offensive coordinator under Brandon Staley in 2023
11:27three years for Staley as the head coach here in L.A.
11:30he brought over Chris Rumpf now in New Orleans on that defensive side as well
11:34we know what he's capable of as a defensive play caller
11:37had a couple of excellent defensive units throughout his career as both a coordinator and at times as a head coach
11:44Miller Stonewall right at midfield no game
11:48Marlowe wax first one to get there
11:50and we go back one play to that big hit by Deshaun hand on Rattler
11:55that rattled his cage a little bit he was slow to get up after it
11:59but a real good pass rush watch number ninety one plant himself and then plant the quarterback
12:05flat on his back he also gets his own man with a heel to the face mask
12:11yeah the friendly fires never go
12:14I just saw you wince in some PTSD
12:17you make me wince all the time
12:20third and ten
12:23Rattler quick throw to the outside Johnson makes the grab but he spun down short of the first down with a flag down
12:30in the backfield
12:32as Rattler gets up a little shaky
12:36and this one's gonna go against the offense we'll see what Jim Harbaugh likes to do
12:42on the backfield
12:44and he's gonna get that
12:45one
12:46two
12:47three
12:48three
12:49three
12:50three
12:51three
12:52three
12:53three
12:54three
12:55three
12:56three
12:57three
12:58three
13:00Simpkins called for it at the bottom of the screen.
13:04And Torricelli, Simpkins, the third, with the penalty.
13:10I'm just glad that you said it.
13:12And you said it was so much gusto.
13:14It's like you just had a tiramisu.
13:19So it sets up third down and 20 for this Saints offense.
13:25Chargers rush four.
13:26Rattler with a deep drop.
13:27Steps up in the pocket.
13:28On the run.
13:29Makes the connection, but well short of the line of gain to Brandon Cooks, the veteran.
13:33Ten yards on the gain.
13:35It'll set up fourth and ten in a likely punt now for the Saints.
13:38That's courtesy of that penalty.
13:41Obviously benefited the Charger defense, but it was a smart defense that they ran that time,
13:46easily giving up that short pass that leaves the Saints still with nine yards to go.
13:51I can't wait for the first chain measurement, but there's no chain, right?
13:55No, no.
13:56It's virtual measurement.
13:57And by the way, it's gone very well so far.
14:00I'll be curious to see how it goes today.
14:01They've been going with some extra practice through these preseason games as James Burnett will send it away.
14:09Now he Miller-Hines back for the Chargers.
14:11He's got a lot of space, but Alexi go for the fair catch.
14:14He must have the punt.
14:15New Orleans gets it right back.
14:18Looks like Jack Stoll fell on top of that.
14:21But you saw Miller-Hines look to see who was coming down.
14:26He did have room, so he lately put his hand up for the fair catch.
14:31You see him look, and now he looks again.
14:34Lost concentration.
14:36The ball goes right through the wickets.
14:41Trayton Welch, rather, with the recovery of that month, but.
14:44First-year player from Wyoming, Johnny on the spot.
14:50A plus-32 net gain when it's all said and done.
14:53Essentially a long pass or a long penalty that keeps this Saints offense on the field.
14:59And now you've got Bayless Jones Jr. and Kendra Miller in the backfield with Spencer Rattler.
15:04Seeing the creativity of this Kellen Moore offense.
15:07Handoff goes to Miller.
15:08To the outside with some space.
15:09Spins away from one.
15:11And then he runs into a crowd just inside the tent.
15:15Picks up eight more on first down.
15:18And now the Saints threatening inside the red zone.
15:20Yeah, Miller's got good quickness.
15:22Also, he's got size.
15:24Six foot, 220 pounds.
15:27He lowers that shoulder and after contact, falls forward.
15:32Miller, already 14 yards on four carries from Miller.
15:37Just past the midway point of this first quarter.
15:39See if New Orleans can cash in on the mistake from Miller Hines.
15:44It's Miller again.
15:45Up the middle.
15:46Keeps the legs churning.
15:47It's a first down.
15:50Down to the five-yard line.
15:55We saw so many times last year this Charger defense so sticky in the red zone.
15:59There's a reason that they led the league in points against.
16:02Keeping teams out of the end zone.
16:04What a great and early opportunity for Jesse Minner's defense to prove in terms of their depth that they can do the same thing in 2025.
16:15And they pin their ears back.
16:18And find a way to get another stop.
16:20Jones the motion man on first and goal.
16:24They give it to him.
16:25Jones looking to get to the corner.
16:28Great pursuit by this Chargers defense.
16:35RJ Mickens, the rookie, got in front of him and made sure he couldn't get any further.
16:39He loses one.
16:40And he's got good speed, but there's just no place to go to the outside.
16:44The contain is there by Minkins.
16:47And he got help from the linebacker there.
16:51Tremont Morris Brash.
16:52Minkins, six-round pick out of Clemson.
16:58Rattler looking to throw.
17:00Rolling.
17:01Extending.
17:02Rattler, he's got wheels.
17:04He's not going to use them this time.
17:05Again on the contain.
17:07This time it's the veteran Tony Jefferson.
17:09The preseason start for the Chargers.
17:15Jefferson and his veteran experience there.
17:20You can see the coverage in the secondary.
17:22Rattler's just got nobody to open.
17:26Wisely steps out of bounds.
17:28Bringing up the third down.
17:30And goal.
17:30Miller stays in there.
17:34Wilson, the man in motion on third and goal.
17:39Play action.
17:40Rattler feeling pressure.
17:41Matlock couldn't get to him.
17:43Rattler going to tuck and run.
17:45He won't get there.
17:46Major stop by the Chargers defense.
17:49And Josh Sear Taylor coming in from the back line.
17:55Boy, that's another physical tackle by Taylor.
17:59Miller, there's the miss by Matlock.
18:01But watch this tackle.
18:02Because Rattler thinks he can maybe go over the top.
18:05Had a little bit of help there that time.
18:08Jamari Caldwell, that big body coming over.
18:10But this Saints offense is going to stay on the field.
18:12It's fourth and goal inside the two.
18:16Miller, six foot, 220 in the backfield.
18:20Give it to him.
18:21Miller, stolen!
18:22Troy Dive, comes into the backfield and denies this Saints offensive point.
18:37Nothing doing after the Muff punt.
18:40The Chargers stand tall in the red zone and keep it scoreless.
18:44Today's broadcast is sponsored in part by Carl's Jr.
18:53Get Carl's Jr.'s new queso crunch combo with fries and a frozen drink for just $9.99.
19:00Now that's hot!
19:01And by Yamaha Resort and Casino at San Manuel.
19:05Second offensive possession for the Chargers.
19:09They stalled out just past midfield.
19:11Then they get the red zone stop following the Muff punt.
19:14So, second drive for Taylor Heinecke.
19:16Leading this offense out of the gun.
19:19Devontae Bidell stays in there.
19:20This is wrapped by a left-hander.
19:22Tucker fisked the man in motion on first end.
19:26Hand it.
19:26Bidell.
19:27Jump cut.
19:28And it gets it across the five for some extra breathing room down to the eighth.
19:31A game of four on first down.
19:33We're going to see Trey Lance eventually.
19:36Expected, likely after this series for Heinecke.
19:40Played great football last week on Thursday against the Lions.
19:45Just mistake-free more than anything else.
19:48Showed off some of that touch that he's shown during training camp.
19:51And the confidence has really improved.
19:53He's said being around Jim Harbaugh, it permeates through the rest of the team.
19:57Heinecke on second and sixth.
19:59To the outside.
20:00A little bit out of reach for Bidell.
20:03A little bit off target as well as that long pass down to Conklin on the first series of plays.
20:18But when you're backed up like this, you really want to get the ball out of your hand as quickly as possible.
20:22Sometimes that throws the timing off between you and the receiver.
20:27A couple of those star rookies out there.
20:29Trey Harris at the bottom of your screen.
20:31The second-round pick from Ole Miss.
20:32You've got Lambert Smith, number 84 in the slot.
20:35Along with Arondé Gadsden, the tight end from Cuse.
20:37And that one was tipped in the backfield and incomplete.
20:41Heinecke had an open man but could get rid of it quick enough.
20:43And it's going to be a three and out for the Chargers.
20:50You can see him looking downfield, then looking to his right to get the ball off.
20:55But Barnhart had trouble keeping Jackson away from the quarterback.
20:59And Jackson got both hands up there.
21:01DeMarco Jackson in his fourth year with that pass deflection that really came close to being not only an interception but maybe a pick six.
21:11J.K. Scott, second punt of the day.
21:13Dante Pettis with a second look at a J.K. Scott punt.
21:17He's known for that hang time.
21:18He's going to need it here.
21:20Trying to flip the field the best he can.
21:22Pettis will have a chance to return it.
21:24But not very far.
21:26Perfect coverage by this Chargers special teams unit.
21:2856-yard punch is the one-yard return.
21:32And a nice play downfield by Caleb Murphy who continues to impress for the Chargers.
21:36Still scoreless late in the first.

21:56Well, the big news from this week on the positive side for the Chargers was the reunion with Keenan Allen coming back after a year in Chicago.
22:05And there is the number one receiver, Ladd McConkie.
22:08And, yeah, XO.
22:09What are we playing?
22:09Tic-tac-toe?
22:10What are you doing?
22:10It's offenses O.
22:13Yeah, it's tic-tac-toe.
22:15And the other guys are X receivers.
22:16I got you.
22:17I understand.
22:18And Herbert's got his top two targets now with Ladd McConkie and Keenan Allen.
22:22The crazy thing in all of that.
22:24And a shout-out to Chargers GM Joe Portis as a toss to the outside for Cam Akers.
22:29Doesn't get very far.
22:31Gains just three yards above the 40.
22:32The great thing was Joe Portis traded Keenan Allen last year for a fourth-round pick.
22:38They then rerouted that fourth-round pick to trade for two different picks, one of which ended up as Ladd McConkie.
22:43The other one ended up as Tar Heap still.
22:46So you get two high-impact starters and then get Keenan Allen back as a free agent this year.
22:51And I have the right sign now.
22:56Yeah, I'd say that generally fits.
22:57When you sign a deal like Justin Herbert signed, is Rattler over the middle on a tight window?
23:03Tipped a dangerous throw.
23:05Just harmlessly incomplete.
23:07He was looking for Jack Stoll, the tight end.
23:09A couple charges in the area.
23:11Yeah, Kendall Williamson had a shot at it.
23:13He just couldn't react quick enough.
23:14Watch number 40 come up from behind.
23:16And it's just about a yard away from an interception.
23:21There's a drop pass there.
23:23Big hit there by Mickens.
23:24A couple of big plays now here in the first quarter by Mickens.
23:27Just to pay it off, by the way, the contract for Herbert is five years, $262.5 million.
23:34That's not bad.
23:35Let me get some water to swallow.
23:38Dry my throat right up.
23:40And a timeout called by the Chargers, first of this first half.
23:45First charge timeout.
23:47Los Angeles.
23:48It was a 30-second timeout.
23:49So, we saw the connectivity that he had to Justin Herbert with Ladd McConkie last year.
23:55They set all types of rookie-type records, by the way, that they broke, did Ladd McConkie,
24:01from Keenan Allen from many years prior.
24:03And you see what he's done over the course of his first five seasons.
24:06All time in the NFL.
24:08Over 1,900 completions first.
24:1121,000 first.
24:14137 touchdowns sixth.
24:15That's pretty good.
24:16I think that warrants $262 million.
24:19There's no question.
24:20The pride of Sheldon High School and Eugene, Oregon, and the Oregon Ducks,
24:24it's worth every penny.
24:27And there are a lot of pennies in that contract.
24:31Yeah, so just for the record, that's three Syracuse mentions from me
24:34and one Oregon mention from you.
24:36We're doing well.
24:38Third down and seven.
24:41Chargers bringing the blitz.
24:42Up the middle.
24:43It's caught.
24:44It's going to be short at the 45.
24:46Well, the Chargers defense contains once again,
24:49as Austin couldn't get to the line again,
24:51and they get the stop quickly on this defensive series.
24:55Yeah, good blitz here this time.
24:57By the safety.
24:59And the Chargers, that made Rattler get rid of the ball
25:01just about a second before he wanted to.
25:04He had a receiver a little bit farther down the field,
25:06but couldn't afford to hang on to the ball and give him a chance.
25:10Track was Bridges right there
25:12to ensure he wasn't going to get any further.
25:15So second punt of the day now for New Orleans.
25:17First one was muffed by Naheem Miller-Hines,
25:20and he's going to get another crack at it.
25:23This one angling a little bit more.
25:25Another fair catch called for.
25:27This time it is brought in just in front of the 15-yard line
25:30by the veteran with a flag down back towards the initial line of scrimmage.
25:34Now that time Miller-Hines really focused on the ball,
25:47did not look at the coverage of the Saints,
25:49and made a secure catch.
25:51For the time being, it's a 39-yard punt
25:55by this special teams unit for New Orleans.
26:03So it's a 39-yard punt when it's all set again.
26:14And the Chargers offense will come back out of the field.
26:16Will we see Heineke?
26:18Will we see Lance answer on the other side?
26:21Scorless here in L.A.
26:26The shakeup is sponsored by Shakey's Pizza Parlor,
26:28home of the famous pizza chicken and Mojo's.
26:30When it's game time, it's go time at Shakey's Pizza Parlor.
26:34The Chargers certainly shook up their backfield this offseason.
26:37First-round pick spent on Amarion Hampton,
26:40second-team All-American, over 1,600 yards,
26:43which was third most in the country.
26:45Najee Harris coming over from Pittsburgh,
26:471,000 yards in each of his first four seasons,
26:50including a Pro Bowl season as a rookie with the Steelers.
26:54You've got those two.
26:55You know you're solidified with your top two backs.
26:57Now it's a battle for that third spot in the backfield
27:00with five different guys vying for it.
27:02Hassan Haskins is going to get his opportunity
27:04out there on the field.
27:07And a surprise may be this man, Raheem Sanders.
27:11He's a thumper, kind of like Gus Edwards was last year.
27:15Six-foot, 230-pounder.
27:18And you like his nickname?
27:20Rocket.
27:20Yeah, Rocket.
27:21Rocket Sanders.
27:23Meanwhile, that penalty, they discussed it.
27:25That was the actual terminology that was used.
27:29They discussed it during the break
27:30and decided there was holding after all.
27:32So half the distance to the goal backed up the Chargers
27:35and now maybe a gain, if anything,
27:37back to the line of scrimmage for Haskins on first down.
27:40And because Heineke just got three plays at last possession,
27:44he's back at quarterback.
27:46He'll finish out this first quarter.
27:49So that should answer your question.
27:51I mean, I did ask it, so I appreciate you answering.
27:54It wasn't rhetorical, was it?
27:55No, no, no, never.
27:55I never asked rhetorical questions.
27:58Trey Lance awaits his turn.
28:00You're expected to see him for a lot of this game.
28:04Gadsden, the motion man on second and ten.
28:07Play action.
28:08Heineke looking for his first completion.
28:09Christian not going to get it this time.
28:10It's a safety.
28:13Christian Boyd came in in a blink.
28:16And the first points come courtesy of the Saints defense.
28:21Yeah, because the Chargers really haven't run the ball very well,
28:24play action pass did not fool anybody on that Saints defensive line.
28:29You can see the immediate pressure that time right up the middle by Kings' Kristen Boyd.
28:37Boyd just overpowering, getting right to the quarterback for two points.
28:44So a mental lapse from Heineke.
28:48He didn't have a ton of time to get rid of it,
28:50but recognition of where he is and the veteran surrendering the first two points of this game
28:55was just under two minutes to play in this first quarter.
28:57So, Cameron Dicker is going to come out.
29:05See if he can get this as deep as possible on the free kick.
29:14A lot of teams use the punter on the free kick.
29:16Chargers want to see that distance, though, from Dicker here.
29:21It's preseason game number two.
29:22Can't hold anything back now, Dan.
29:23Don't tell me.
29:26Don't tempt me to tell you to shut up, too.
29:30And so they're going to take a look.
29:33It was close because when he first got hit,
29:35it looked like he was just in front of the goal line here.
29:39And, of course, that forward progress is going to be where he's marked down.
29:42However, the ball certainly in his hand, certainly in his possession,
29:46and then the momentum took him in.
29:48So, you see here he plants.
29:51And his foot is outside.
29:53And then he gets taken back.
29:53You've got a good point.
29:54No, I don't think that's a safety.
29:55Because when he was tackled, he had the ball outside of the end zone.
30:02The only issue was the ball behind him as he was trying to wind back.
30:07But still, he's got the ball forward there.
30:09Right.
30:09And his feet are not in the end zone.
30:11So, they could put this on the half-yard line as a result.
30:17And take away two points.
30:21So, Kellen Moore getting the official explanation.
30:24All smiles in his first preseason game as a head coach.
30:28Youngest head coach in the NFL at just 36 years old.
30:34Impressive resume in football.
30:37Another look again.
30:39See that foot?
30:40You can clearly see the green in between.
30:43Yep.
30:43They're bringing that football back towards the goal line as of right now.
30:48Here's the announcement.
30:49After review.
30:50When the quarterback was initially contacted, the ball was outside of the end zone.
30:55Therefore, it is not a safety.
30:58It will be further down in the one-half-yard line.
31:01So, Chargers catch a break.
31:02149 on the game clock.
31:05The eagle eye.
31:07Ah!
31:07Good job.
31:08These aren't just fashion glasses.
31:10I didn't think they were.
31:12No.
31:13Oh, come on.
31:16I'm just waiting to unleash blue steel.
31:19Please.
31:19Well, the only safety the Chargers have allowed since 2021 was actually against the Saints week eight last season.
31:26It was the first score of the game, a game in which the Chargers eventually ran away with.
31:30It was actually their first victory against the Saints in quite some time.
31:34It dropped five in a row against New Orleans from 08 to 2020.
31:38So, second down and 17.
31:40They've got to get this out from near the goal line.
31:43Heineke deep drop to the back of the end zone.
31:45And his first completion goes to Haskins.
31:47He's going to try to get away and gets it all the way to the nine.
31:50A gain of eight to get back to the original line of scrimmage.
31:52But you could not step any further back in the end zone.
31:56I mean, his right foot was almost out of the back of the end zone, which would have resulted in a safety.
32:03So, instead, no points on the board.
32:07And J.K. Scott will have a chance to try to at least get this back into New Orleans territory.
32:15Dante Pettis has been busy in the return.
32:17He just hasn't really had an opportunity to bust one.
32:21He had one yard on his previous return.
32:24This one's got a high spiraling kick.
32:26Goes all the way back inside the 35.
32:29And let's see what Pettis can do with it.
32:30Getting to the outside.
32:33Pettis stops in his tracks.
32:34And he's shy of the 40.
32:36Again, the coverage from this Chargers special teams unit continues to be impressive on a 69-yard boot,
32:42four-yard return, and the tackle from Kendall Williamson.
32:46While the latest in Chargers breaking news, exclusive content, scores, highlights, and more,
32:51stay in touch with the convenience of a text.
32:53Simply message the word BOLTUP to 83676 to receive updates.
32:59That's BOLTUP all one word.
33:05So, Rattler stays in there.
33:06Will await the appearance of the rookie, Tyler Shuck, who was taken in the second round this year out of Louisville.
33:16Quick throw to the outside and a quick tackle made.
33:18Jack Stoll had nowhere to go.
33:20Gains maybe a yard as Tony Jefferson comes in and makes another play.
33:24Well, Tony Jefferson is in his 11th year.
33:27He's got a lot of experience, obviously.
33:29The native of Chula Vista with the quickness still and the head in front of the legs of the runner here.
33:38There's just no way that you can have extra yardage after that tackle.
33:43A veteran type of play.
33:45Reading and then tackling.
33:49Just elite effort from an 11-year veteran.
33:52First quarter.
33:53So, the first quarter will end scoreless after it looked like New Orleans had the first two points on the board.
33:59The Chargers defense continues to get it done.
34:02And we await the first score of the game as we head to the second here in L.A.
34:06All zeros on the board after one.
34:08Well, Dan, you're never too young to bolt up.
34:17That's at least how I've lived my life.
34:21You're certainly never too much in your prime, Tabalta.
34:26Okay, what's the next step?
34:28I'm not going to get there.
34:33Second quarter starting.
34:34Cam Akers in the backfield for New Orleans.
34:37It's like maybe an early jump.
34:39No flag comes in.
34:40And they'll strip.
34:41Chargers all over it.
34:42They forced five turnovers against the Lions last week.
34:46Justin Aboigby right there to scoop it up after Caleb Murphy forced another one.
34:53Yeah, you've got the...
34:54You earned that money.
34:56Watch the right hand of Murphy come right down on the right arm of Rattler.
35:01Ball comes out.
35:03Charger ball.
35:03Tremendous pass rush off the corner by Murphy as he continues to make big plays.
35:11Last week on special teams, this went on defense on a first down.
35:14I mean, Jesse Minter was just raving about what Caleb Murphy has done so far.
35:23He said he's just done a really good job of every day coming in and slightly improving.
35:29And now it's our first look at Trey Lance in at quarterback for the Chargers with a pitch to Nyheim Miller-Hindes.
35:34Showing off the speed and the shiftingness across the 30.
35:39So Trey Lance getting his second action of the preseason after the start last week.
35:45He really played well.
35:46Third overall pick for San Francisco back in 2021.
35:50Of course, the devastating ankle injury after winning that starting job.
35:54And the coaching staff, they've just preached game reps for him.
35:56Getting out there and playing legitimate game opportunity.
35:59Yeah, Arbaugh told us that he was impressed with how well Lance ran the team last week against Detroit.
36:06Solid stats.
36:08Confident play.
36:10On the bootleg play action.
36:11Low throw incomplete.
36:13He was looking for Gadsden.
36:14And it's throw down and five.
36:17Went 13 of 20 against Detroit for 120 yards and two touchdowns, including a perfect touch pass to Disley.
36:23But this one, just a little bit off target.
36:26And this is a tough throw to make on your first attempt of the ball game, running to the left and having to drop your elbow and hit a moving target.
36:36Ball was just, as you said, down around the knees, too low for Disley.
36:41So Taylor Heineke's day is over.
36:43Not a super productive day with just one completion, five attempts.
36:48First, third down for Lance of the day.
36:53And they're going to hand it off for Videll.
36:55He'll push the pile, but he's not going to get there.
36:58Now curious to see with that type of play calling on third down, if Greg Roman wants to leave the offense on the field,
37:04or instead they'll go for either a long field goal or, and it is, a long field goal.
37:09So three quick plays for Trey Lance on his first offensive set after the fumble recovery by the Charger defense.
37:19And Cameron Dicker, a fan favorite, will come in for what is going to be a 44-yard attempt.
37:25Need another body in there.
37:26Here comes Fisk to play the wing position.
37:28J.K. Scott on the hold, and the kick from Dicker curves in.
37:35Chargers on the board first here in this second quarter.
37:38It all started with a turnover forced on the fumble by Caleb Murphy, scooped up by a Boyd B, and cashed in by Dicker.
37:46Three nothing.
37:47Well, Caleb Murphy directly leading to the first points of the game for the Chargers with a forced fumble on Spencer Rattler.
37:58The savvy decision is sponsored by Verizon, the official 5G network of the Los Angeles Chargers,
38:03and the Chargers certainly made a savvy decision bringing back Keenan Allen.
38:07Look at his Charger ranked second in receptions and yards only to the now Hall of Famer Antonio Gates
38:13with over 900 catches, over 10,500 yards, got 59 touchdowns, and averages 76 yards per game.
38:22Bring him back on a one-year deal after trading him to Chicago last year,
38:26coming on the heels of the surprise retirement from Mike Williams,
38:29who was brought back into that receiver room.
38:31And now you've got this blend of young players and a savvy veteran who has done it at the highest level.
38:37You think about what Keenan Allen did even just two years ago in 2023 for this Charger team.
38:43Had one of his best seasons of his career before he was dealt to Chicago before last season.
38:49On the return with a crease, Kendra Miller is going to get this to the 40-yard line,
38:53a good field position on a 36-yard return for the Saints offense.
38:57And for more with Keenan Allen, go to Jamie Maggio.
39:00Noah, thank you so much.
39:01First of all, Keenan, it is great to see you in this building, on this sideline, in these colors.
39:05How great does it feel to be a Charger once again?
39:07Oh, it's amazing.
39:08Being back home feels like home.
39:10Being back in front of the fans with the organization, back with the teammates is great.
39:15In another 52 receptions, you'll be the franchise leader in receptions.
39:19What are we looking at, week three?
39:21Week three, that would be nice.
39:23But, yeah, just one game at a time.
39:25You know, just doing my job, doing what the offense, you know,
39:28entitles me to do, being there for Justin and making the plays when the opportunities come up.
39:31Speaking of Justin, you're a six-time Pro Bowler.
39:34Three of those Pro Bowl appearances came when you were getting the rock from Justin Herbert.
39:38How good is it to be back with him?
39:39And is it like riding a bike?
39:41You guys pick up where you left off with the chemistry?
39:43Oh, yeah.
39:44You know, it's felt right since the day I came in and did a little workout.
39:48It just felt normal.
39:49You know, it didn't feel like we were doing a workout.
39:50It felt like we were just playing ball, playing catch.
39:53But, yeah, man, you know, he's a great quarterback.
39:56He has the arm talent.
39:57He's obviously gotten better, you know, through the years and smarter with the game.
40:00He knows what he's doing.
40:02He's in control of the offense, and, you know, I can't wait.
40:04I love that.
40:05The rookie KLS, by the way, said that you were one of the receivers that he looked up to and admired.
40:10He said he played it cool when he first ran into you in the locker room.
40:13Is that true, or did he fanboy a little bit?
40:15No, no, no.
40:15It was literally, what's up, bro?
40:17I'm Dre.
40:18And in my mind, I'm like, damn, I thought you was KLS.
40:21So I thought he would have gave me that I'm KLS, but he's Dre.
40:24But, yeah, it's been cool.
40:27You know, we talked it up a little bit.
40:29You know, I've only been there for three days at this point, so we'll chop it up.
40:33Great to see you, man.
40:34Thanks for the time.
40:35Absolutely.
40:36All right, guys, back to you.
40:37Thanks so much, Jamie.
40:38Well, Keenan Allen, we asked Jim Harbaugh what it's been like to have him back, and he said there's a presence about him.
40:43He said all the great players have it.
40:44Justin Herbert has it.
40:46He said first day he had Andrew Luck at Stanford practice.
40:48He said he could feel it when he got on the field, and then, Dan, you said, well, you had it.
40:52He goes, no, no, I'm not on that dance floor.
40:54That's not me.
40:56Well, the big thing with Keenan is the unspoken part of it is the example he was set for Dre, Keiondre Lambert-Smith,
41:06and Trey Harris, a couple of rookies, but to be able to be in the locker room with him and see how he prepares
41:14and see how he runs his routes and all those type of things, it's so invaluable,
41:19and that's where the benefit of having Allen will really pay dividends as much as the catches in the yards
41:26because this is the future.
41:28Those guys are the future, but his contribution at this point is going to be very, very important.
41:34He is one of the biggest additions this offseason along with the rookies that were mentioned.
41:39Arian Hampton, Trey Harris, expected to be big parts.
41:42Makai Becton we haven't talked about yet, winning a Super Bowl last year at the guard position
41:47as opposed to his initial position at tackle with the Philadelphia Eagles, Najee Harris.
41:52Dante Jackson, a ball hawk at cornerback.
41:55And KLS, if he can continue to develop under the tutelage of Allen and his coaching staff,
42:00look out, this receiving room has a chance to be really special.
42:03Third down and seven, Rattler steps up, time runs out, Rattler looking to get it,
42:08and he does with his legs into Charger territory all the way down to the 45.
42:13Mauga finally gets to him, but 11 yards on the pickup to move the chains.
42:18Rattler in competition with Shuck and Jake Hayner shows that he's not afraid to go head first
42:25and challenge the tacklers.
42:26Not the biggest body, six foot, about 210 pounds.
42:32Difference with Shuck, who will come in likely next at six foot five, 220.
42:37But four rushes already for Rattler, amassing 22 yards, and keeps this drive alive with his legs.
42:44Akers and Jones, two running backs in there.
42:46Jones in motion.
42:47Swing it to him on the outside, and he is devoured.
42:50Big-time open field tackle made in the backfield.
42:55And a nice play to keep this Chargers defense cooking a little bit by Kendall Williamson.
43:00Al Williamson has made a couple plays today.
43:03We've seen some really solid tackling from the defensive backs of the Chargers.
43:08Saw Jefferson earlier.
43:11This time it's Williamson.
43:12So you said with Allen going back to that receivers room, you've got...
45:12A false start.
45:16Clyde Edwards, Allaire, now the running back.
45:18We've seen a number in the backfield.
45:20Fourth option here already.
45:22And another great play by Caleb Murphy.
45:24He got penetration and two more lost.
45:27What a day already in this first half from the rookie.
45:33Yeah, playing that edge rusher.
45:35Of course, he can learn from a great one in Khalil Mack.
45:39You can see him number 50 right there.
45:42Coming down inside, beating the block of Dylan Radduns.
45:46We apologize for any of our technical difficulties.
45:53Third sack already for this Chargers defense.
45:56Murphy, the D2 product from Ferris State.
45:59Flag down.
46:00They're going to take a shot towards the sideline.
46:02Incomplete from Means.
46:07Looks like this is going to back up New Orleans even more after what looked like a very promising drive.
46:13It is going backwards before it's going forwards as Khalil Mack looks on.
46:17He's going to enjoy for his defense.
46:22Illegal formation.
46:24Offense.
46:25Number 77.
46:26Not on the line of coverage.
46:27That penalty is defying the result of the play.
46:29Third down.
46:30You see that penalty a lot in the preseason where the offensive tackles are trying to cheat back a little bit
46:36to be able to take some of the steam off that pass rush coming around the edge.
46:41Point of emphasis is what the bosses back in New York talk about
46:45when it comes to certain penalties they want to enforce throughout the year.
46:50New Orleans three of six on third down.
46:52They're two for two on this drive.
46:54Rattler quick throw.
46:55Tipped up.
46:56Another dangerous one couldn't be brought in by Dean Leonard.
47:00But it is fourth and forever.
47:03And New Orleans will have to boot it away one way or another.
47:07Well, the deflection here.
47:08And Dean Leonard, if he makes this catch, it's going to be a foot race to the end zone.
47:13Ball thrown behind the receiver.
47:15And Leonard just could not adjust to the ball in flight there.
47:19And Leonard just could not adjust to the ball in flight there.
