23:15show and singing purple rain in the rain maybe someone could put purple rain on
23:21for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli with a shade of purple on their race suits for this weekend
23:27so we're definitely showing 18 laps to go which sorts out their fuel issue
23:32at the moment up on this screen here anyway so presumably they'll follow the safety car
23:37out again and we wait with baited breath to see whether the safety car pits and lets them go to
23:42the grid or adds extra formation laps and confirmation from the FIA that the race did
23:50not start it was an extra formation lap that was thrown into proceedings but what it has done
23:57is cut down the amount of laps that we will get for the race because cars have run out of fuel if we
24:03now had a 19 lap race and that said is is hot off the presses from Cameron at the FIA aha okay I've
24:11had it double uh confirmed by uh no less more no less authority than Andy Stevenson uh at Aston Martin
24:18the sporting director so will you believe him Crofty I know you didn't believe me I didn't believe
24:22that's fine I'm used to that I've got no problem and you know Crofty I'm also not the kind of person
24:26to say I told you so so I won't say that but you told me so no I didn't uh said the starting
24:30procedure the race never started the starting procedure was suspended so uh yeah I'm looking
24:37forward to the start it's it's baking down here now my friend it's absolutely it's drying out
24:42and uh the sun is out and no sign of the rain that was to the south of the city so well let's start it
24:48again I guess everybody will have to be out on uh intermediates including Carlos Sainz uh and you
24:54never know Crofty in five laps time you might be calling for some slicks well that would be a thing
24:59wouldn't it um Williams will have the chance to get rid of the wet tires on Carlos Sainz's car
25:07yeah uh that gamble as window of opportunities somewhat been taken away hasn't it but
25:13they'll still be struggling with visibility even in even in these conditions and the sun
25:18is definitely trying its best to get out there now and that's one very busy pit lane
25:27and uh yeah let's see how many formation laps are going to throw at it this time
25:36I reckon uh two laps behind the safety car and then a potential standing start is what race control
25:43are aiming for for this and what do you base that on uh Cameron from the FIA just sent me another message
25:51yeah while you were talking that's what I was messaging so right come on how many laps behind
25:54the safety garden I wonder why this information is not generally available um to all the race
26:01fans around the world and uh and everybody watching Zach Brown uh watching on um I don't know
26:09what your weather radar saying but it looks a lot brighter somewhere over Bill's mother's
26:15yeah it looks like there could be some more rain coming uh briefly and then it should stop so uh I
26:22think this is going to be a tricky race you've got to have one eye on a good result in the sprint but
26:26you don't want to compromise your car for for qualifying and what's what's the gap Zach between
26:33the sprint race and qualifying you have to have a a mandatory time don't you to uh in order to take
26:39cars out of park ferme and and do what you need to do yeah but if you have a uh severe damage
26:46to your car then you won't make qualifying and obviously uh you know I didn't see Charles car
26:51close up but I suspect uh they'll be running to get that car ready and that obviously happened a half
26:57an hour ago so if something happens here in the next 45 minutes it could be a challenge being ready
27:02for qualified is that your biggest worry this afternoon then that the qualifying for for the main event
27:07might be compromised by this sprint race yeah I think so you know more points at play tomorrow
27:13and uh if you have an issue and you can't make qualifying then it makes tomorrow pretty uh pretty
27:19difficult but uh we'd like to try and get on the podium on both so uh we'll race hard uh presumably you
27:26can see the Ferrari garage and Leclerc's car must still be stranded out on track they can't start working
27:30on it yet can they yeah no uh I do not see it so uh yeah they'll uh have it retrieved here uh pretty
27:36quickly I presume thanks ever so much indeed Zach we'll be uh we'll be back with you in a little
27:43while Valtteri Bottas as a reserve driver at Mercedes heading back to the garage and doesn't that look a
27:48lot better the the medical car uh making its way uh around the track that looks a lot drier Martin
27:56it does look uh considerably drier it looks as slippery as oiled oak though doesn't it um there's
28:02been some racing and some running here it's a temporary facility of course sort of folded in around
28:08the car park uh of this magnificent stadium and uh and I have to say I think they've done a super job to
28:15make a really credible high-speed racetrack in a very confined space um but my goodness it looks
28:21slippery 75 uh different circuit designs they came up with they simulated 36 of those different designs
28:30don't worry it hasn't started raining again that car uh it's just a show car it's not actually on the
28:35track and then the final design was chosen from those 36 simulated uh designs and I'm with you Martin
28:43they've they've come up with uh with a really really good track here and we're going to be racing
28:47here for quite some time to come not just today with this delay uh but until 2041. okay so we have
28:54been informed that when we leave the pitlane the race will start so we will be taking the grid start
29:01okie dokie that sounds somewhat different doesn't it to the other information uh good so so they'll go to
29:09the grid from here yeah and start so there there's another lap that'll come off the screen then
29:13getting around to the start and go to the grid and start a race so yuki sunoda even though he starts
29:20this race from the pit lane i suppose because the cars have been on the track and now out the park from
29:27that that's a bit tenuous because if it was if it was one formation lap so there's no rain expected
29:36currently my finish on slicks yeah as uh as we were saying um if if it was just one formation lap
29:44yuki sunoda would have trundled out of his garage get to the end of the pit lane and then start the
29:48race but no because the race hasn't started yet so i think he can leave he can leave the pit lane
29:55do a formation lap he must then go back to the pit lane and start at the end of the pit lane and yeah so
30:01that i've just been listening to yuki's uh radio with his engineer and they're they're talking about
30:05very much joining this pack when they leave the pit lane coming round and they're still
30:09in question whether it's going to be a grid start or a rolling start interesting because there is from
30:16race control uh no indication yet that it will be uh that will be a standing start we're hoping it's a
30:22standing start it looks dry enough to be a standing start you'd think so yeah um you would think so
30:31the water's clear it's really difficult for the teams and drivers because there are vehicles out
30:36there blowing the track and sweeping the track you kind of don't know what you're going to find when
30:41you get out out the back of the circuit uh news coming in all the time the current plan is to have
30:45two laps behind the safety car in order to give the drivers a chance to go through turn one and then
30:50make a decision on a standing versus rolling start so i'm assuming that's not the drivers making that
30:55decision but their feedback will be taken into consideration by ruby marquez the race director
31:01i think i'm going to sit back and wait and see what they do because it seems somewhat unclear
31:05doesn't it there's no point in trying to second guess it at the moment and i'm sure it will be
31:10affected by that the feedback they're getting from the drivers as well so either way we're going to
31:15get going again in less than a minute's time now lots of cloud around we keep our fingers crossed that
31:22we don't get any rain toto wolf who made the decision when lewis hamilton left mercedes to bring
31:30in this man kimmy antonelli into the stable plenty of drivers would have been available for toto wolf but
31:37he chose the youngster the young italian and in what is his sixth grand prix weekend he has come up with
31:44with his first pole position in any format of formula one the first italian to take any pole
31:50since giancarlo fisichella in spa in 2009 impressive he wasn't fastest in any sector in in sprint
31:58qualifying it was just a really good tidy fast lap from from the youngster starting on pole and that's
32:06what made it was a few thousands that's what made the difference of he just hooked up three very solid
32:11sectors rather than sparkling in any of them in particular here we go then for the first of what
32:20should be a couple of formation labs and we'll be listening to the team radios which you can do
32:25obviously uh back at home as well via the sky sports app or via your interactive remote control
32:32uh if you're watching on now or sky q sky glass or sky stream and there will be lots of chatter i'm sure
32:39on the radio antsy davis is trying to keep across four drivers at the moment uh and uh to what they're
32:45saying but already answer is feedback coming in yeah they're just talking about most teams saying two
32:50laps they're expecting behind the safety car but uh it's a very organic thing at the moment crofty isn't it
32:55it's a lot less spray now uh when you see the cars uh like the red bull in the bottom of your screen
33:01there when it's got a bit of speed on there's way way less spray this is very raceable now this track
33:09the uh freeway has almost come to a standstill on the the right hand side plenty of traffic in the area
33:15and plenty of people still making their way uh to the circuit uh all the computers and computing power
33:22at his disposal but andrea stella wants to stand in the open air just to get a feel of the
33:28conditions the mclaren team principle and yeah this the spray is reduced obviously still
33:37hanging around it in pockets i'm sure it will hang in the air a bit given the humidity
33:42this is like melbourne where there was a delayed start and changeable conditions
33:48it's really hard to keep your head at this time you're you're hyped up you're ready to go racing
33:54and you just have to just stay calm somehow um with the uncertainty that's going on it's really a
34:02peak time for a formula one driver to to get into some kind of zen and not let this get in your head
34:08i'm not saying it's easy for kimmy antonelli but if you're one of the six rookies maybe pole is the
34:13best place to be our conditions uh raceable area okay given that he hasn't got the spray when we do
34:21get going uh coming from a car in front of him yeah it is raceable as uh as we were saying um and you
34:28know max wants to get going so the red bull because as we go into another formation lap them i'll keep an
34:35eye on the safety car lights to see if that's coming in uh this lap so they can go and do a standing start
34:41presumably wait for that information as well as standing or rolling start but um i would imagine
34:47max and red bull think there's some scalps to be had here uh in these conditions with max's undoubted
34:55talent well everywhere but in the rain uh yeah standing water's gone quite a lot still a couple of rivers
35:04visibility is okay end of the streets are still pretty bad
35:08very detailed analysis there from oscar piastri you'll notice lap two of 18 so these formation laps
35:19are counting for the total race laps because of the fuel issue and not wanting cars to run out of fuel
35:26and we're told it is a standing start so with max verstappen and oscar piastri giving some feedback and
35:33other drivers to standing start has been chosen yeah i can understand you know max down there in
35:38fourth is keenest to get this underway than perhaps oscar piastri the world championship leader up there
35:44in second as it were but it does look entirely raceable now is is the right word and now they'll
35:52need some heat in those intermediate tires it's a compound that uh generates grip in cooler conditions
35:58because you're obviously running through water a lot of the time completely different sometimes it
36:02can be a harder compound even than the slick tires it is a different type of of compound on the on the
36:08tire to to generate grip in cooler conditions and uh and they soon overheat as well which comes back to
36:15ocon's comment of it'll finish uh on the slicks if we're not careful get the feeling he might be right you know
36:22give it seven or eight laps of this with no more rain uh we might yet get some uh some pit stops yeah
36:29now it's about who's been able to practice any wet starts um and which gear will they start in well
36:36they start in second gear that's normally the way isn't it yeah um and so you know who's really on top
36:42of their wet starts there's your pole sitter then kimmy antonelli for this sprint alongside him
36:49on the front row of the grid the championship leader oscar piastri behind oscar piastri keen
36:55to get to the grid lando norris max verstappen starts alongside lando norris on that second row
37:02third row george russell was charles de claire no charles de claire out of this race after crashing
37:09on his initial lap to the grid when the rain was at its heaviest about an hour ago lewis hamilton
37:15ahead of alex albon isaac hadja ahead of fernando alonso and that is the top 10
37:22and plenty of ferrari fans here wanting to see can lewis hamilton make it two sprint wins out of two
37:28this season and we've just completed lap three of this non-race so we haven't had any racing so far
37:35we've had plenty of incidents so far and we're about to get going for the sprints lewis hamilton
37:43will slot in to where his teammate charles de claire should have been which means everyone now moves up
37:49a grid spot because they don't leave the space open and empty right at the back is yuki sunoda he's gone to
37:56the grid so has gone to the grid and red bull have obviously checked that out and made sure that that's
38:02okay so we've got 19 drivers on the grid for this miami sprint eight points for a win points all the
38:14way down to eighth place no pit stops unless it gets too dry for those intermediate tires
38:20and kimmy antonelli on pole it slides out and away we go and i think oscar piastri had a better
38:26reaction time and piastri is coming at kimmy antonelli and has the inside line into the first
38:31corner and antonelli has to back out of it and he's going to lose places now as through goes piastri
38:37through goes norris and through goes max verstappen pole down to fourth now and george russell all over
38:43the rear wing of his teammates mercedes yeah the trouble for antonelli he's out of position now he's
38:47falling back through the pack it's really hard so then gather the speed up he should have yielded
38:52that first corner instead of trying to fight it around the outside you live and you learn and he's
38:57still on the race track it was just a slightly better reaction time from oscar piastri it wouldn't be off
39:05and once again second race running oscar piastri involved in the first corner incident with one car
39:10leaving the track but unlike in jenna uh the uh the race leader the man on pole didn't try and carry
39:18on right here goes antonelli into the next left-hander with george russell right behind him and lots
39:24of pressure being put on the young italian in really really tricky conditions still lewis hamilton ahead
39:30of alex album fernando alonso up into eighth liam lawson up into ninth from 14th isaac hadja has dropped
39:37down a couple of places lancestrol has made an excellent start from 16th esteban ocon holds on
39:43the 12th and they're all on the inside of the track way off the racing line to try to find some
39:48traction out of the tight left-hander onto the back straight the astray leads from norris and
39:53verstappen as into the heavy braking zone at 10 17 we go through the spray come the cars here just for one
40:02moment thought that esteban ocon was trying to make a move on lancestrol he couldn't do that science
40:07though gets past pierre gasly as we look down to see that yuki sunoda has made up a couple of places
40:13already and piastri's lead 1.7 seconds at the end of our first racing lap and they won't be drs of
40:19course in these conditions maybe later in the race they might enable it but nonetheless piastri's got
40:24himself a handsome advantage out there he certainly has lando norris under a little bit more pressure
40:30from max verstappen antonelli has just moved a bit further ahead of george russell now and maybe his
40:36tires getting a little bit warmer and that's certainly helping him through the car stream now
40:42into this brilliant complex of high speed changes of direction left to right left to right out in front
40:49all looking very nice for oscar piastri he is streaking away from lando norris there'll be tiptoeing
40:55around there zach brown said to is on the pit wall you know what's more important is having a car for
41:00qualifying this afternoon for the main race tomorrow do not take any risks out there um but there are
41:07some points available liam lawson would dearly love to get himself into the top eight but fernando alonso
41:12knows his way around in these conditions carlos science has already got past pierre gasly he's trying
41:17to make a move on the has of esteban ocon just has to sit behind him through the chicane currently
41:26and then try down the back straight strike very quickly yeah things could change around quite
41:32heavily here if someone wants to take an early gamble onto the slicks it might really pay dividends but
41:37probably not just at this moment martin no not for some time yet but um there are no mandatory pit
41:43stops in the sprint but of course you can make a pit stop that's carlos science then up the inside
41:49nicely done yeah carlos science nicely done jack doing almost uh so pierre gasly almost taking
41:55esteban ocon too ocon struggling out there a touch but he's back ahead ocon got better traction out of
42:01the corner science went in a bit deep and reclaimed the position that will carry on then for a few more
42:08corners as carlos science tries and tries again hulkenberg started 11th down into 15th for first
42:15couple of laps for him i won't turn lewis hamilton struggling once again with the handling of his
42:22ferrari it's a different sprint today than it was in shanghai for him last month we're on board with the
42:28seven-time world champion now and you can see how tricky it is martin yeah when he says it won't turn
42:32obviously it does turn but it won't turn as fast as he wants it to let's have a look and see who got
42:38to the apex first down in that first corner and uh that's piastri's corner on the inside touch and go
42:48really touch and go there as to where you you need to stop the car really and decide where the apex is
42:54exactly uh and whether uh piastri was far enough he's got to be alongside the mirror of the mercedes
43:02of antonelli it's front wheel so as you get to the apex it does look like it was piastri's corner
43:09doesn't it yeah lando norris neat and tidy behind just minding his own business it looked like a carbon
43:16copy of of jeddah when piastri had the right to the corner but piastri was considerably further
43:23ahead in jeddah oh that's a bit of braille overtaking isn't it ollie bearman was there a gap did he
43:30breathe in at race control have noted that incident between antonelli and piastri hasn't been taken to
43:36the stewards as yet but it has done though as ocon stays ahead of carlos science under pressure once more
43:44it's given piastri the perfect launch in this race and he's two seconds clear now yeah there's a
43:49critical point there as to whether piastri owned that corner or not his front axle has to be at least
43:56alongside the mirror which i don't point out you're supposed to see that as a driver in a transient
44:01situation especially in these conditions um or or beyond that as you hit the apex now as i've always
44:08said to people where exactly is the apex of of certain corners but uh they're saying no further
44:16investigation required you can see it at the top of your screen piastri lives for another day in the
44:22lead how long can liam lawson last in this race he's just been on the radio saying that his visor's
44:27broken and he can't see um i don't know if it's uh it's vibrating a little bit the uh tinted uh tear
44:36offs that are causing him a bit of discomfort but he's under pressure here from his teammate isaac
44:40hadja and probably the closest battle on the track ah max verstappen has been noted for being out of
44:48position at the start as we see how carla science got past estaban ocon and estaban ocon said thank
44:55you i'll take it back again there's a tiny dry patch on the inside of that what is effectively the
45:00the last corner on the track and uh so what you can do if you've got misted up visor yeah you can get
45:05rid of some rip-offs you can crack the visor open a little bit but sometimes that lets more water in
45:11than not they are double glazed devices some of them are heated um and it's unusual to have so but
45:18it's i think it's because it's still so humid out there your own breath will soon fog up the visor as
45:24any motorbiker knows verstappen noted that for a false start for being out of position uh the indication
45:31is from our production team who spun this back and had a look that he was uh further ahead from his uh
45:38grid box he'd overshot his position wow that happened to lando norris didn't it yeah and um
45:43normally that's but no further action so we've had a look at it and thought that he might be about
45:49out of position the stewards have said no further action let's have a quick look
45:54fire up the rear tires a little bit and there's the yellow reference line well surely that's too far
46:02forward uh it looks very similar to norris doesn't it yeah in bahrain i'm oh there's a mercedes uh
46:12somewhat uh wider than it should be but it's all right well i i'll wait for the uh i'll wait for
46:18the end of this race and then someone can tell me why max verstappen was further forward than his pit
46:25box but was okay and wasn't noted for a false start he still had a i mean if he wasn't they should all be
46:31that far forward on every start at every grand prix because there's you you can gain a third of a
46:37meter right he probably had a bit of contact patch still on the white line but if that's the story
46:42everybody must go right to the front of their start boxes uh lewis hamilton ahead then of alex
46:48albon albon looked to be a little closer to hamilton meanwhile albon's teammate carlos science is having
46:54a go here at esteban ocon who's been using that inside line to get better traction he might just do it
46:59again because science has outbraked himself the old switcheroo there helped by carlos science and
47:06that must be getting very frustrating indeed now for the spanish driver stuck down in 13th can't get
47:12past the house every time he does ocon reclaims that position pole sitter kimmy antonelli in fourth
47:18holding off george russell max verstappen in thirds trying to put pressure on lando norris but not and
47:24the cars starting to slide around on these intermediate tires now they'll overheat very
47:29quickly indeed they'll have to start going to find the water off the racing line look at the dry line
47:34there that'll just burn these tires out quicker than you could ever imagine looks like the sun's coming
47:41out as well yeah we might well see drivers having to come in for slick tires ted all the mechanics are just
47:49clearing areas in front of the pit box to just in case martin that is the situation bright sunshine
47:54in the pit lane so lando not being able to put any pressure on piastri piastri driving away out front
48:00i'll tell you who's also getting close and that's fernando alonso in p8 getting a bit closer to the
48:06williams of alex albon in front of him if he finishes in this position crofty of course that would be alonso's
48:11first points of 2025. absolutely and uh first points in a sprint race as well for an aston martin team
48:19who haven't scored a sprint point since qatar 2023 on board with kimmy antonelli down the back straight
48:27we go uh behind him alex albon looks to be getting closer once more uh to lewis hamilton and then
48:34fernando alonso trying to keep tabs with albon well my visor is just absolutely i have no visibility
48:44i don't know if it was a holding on something terrible well not just liam lawson struggling
48:49today with visibility problems no i think it's the humidity it's um you you know you're sweating
48:56inside the car as well but when you can see now the tread blocks start to move around the cars just
49:02look a little bit jelly like through the corners the back end of the car um and i have to say the
49:08front tires on hamilton's ferrari look particularly nasty he has been talking he said it won't turn
49:13that means he got understair he's turning the stairwell and the front axle just sliding across
49:18the racetrack and i think it's hurt uh he's 30 seconds i think it's hurt lewis a lot you can see
49:23that dry line uh that's appearing now has appeared uh quite quickly uh who is ready to take a gamble and go
49:30on to uh to slick tires i wonder how's the track trying but not as quick as i thought so piastri's
49:39got a bit of a buffer just under three seconds from his teammate at lando norris so he can maybe
49:46hang it out just a little bit longer and still do an extra lap on the intermediate tires or
