00:00Spectacular day in downtown Detroit as the Lions take on the Texans.
00:07It's time for T.J. Lang's keys to the game presented by Whisker.
00:11Number one, let it loose, like we talked about the last game.
00:14Coach said, hey, we kind of slimmed down the playbook a little bit this week.
00:17Don't want the guys sneaking too much.
00:18We just want them going and play fast.
00:19And then clear communication, specifically on the offensive side of the ball.
00:23Just too many missing details over the last couple games.
00:26Want to see guys get up in the line, lined up at the right spot.
00:29Want to see Hendon Hooker really command this offense.
00:31Clear communication.
00:32Shouldn't have any issues today, especially being at home at Ford Field.
00:35That is the plan.
00:36Try and minimize the penalties along with that.
00:38As well as we go downstairs to Danny Rogers on this whole roster shakedown.
00:42Hey, Jason, the 72-hour countdown starts right when this game ends.
00:46That's when head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes go home
00:49and they watch the game tape.
00:51Tomorrow morning, Coach Campbell will call a team meeting.
00:54He'll ask all 90 players to hang in there while he makes some tough roster decisions
00:59over the next 48 hours.
01:01After one last deep dive into the roster,
01:03Campbell and Holmes will meet one last time tomorrow evening around dinner time
01:06and they will make their final roster decisions.
01:10On Monday, players will be individually called into Campbell's office with Holmes nearby
01:14and they will be told exactly why they will not be making this Detroit Lions roster.
01:19The entire time Coach Campbell was describing this process to us yesterday,
01:22he looked uncomfortable.
01:24He was fishing with his sweatshirt.
01:26It was hard to find some words at some points for him
01:29because he says this part of the preseason, it is taxing, difficult, his least favorite,
01:35and it just stinks.
01:37Yeah, I mean, look, you've got to do it, but here's the thing about being better.
01:42Here's the thing about going 15-2 in the regular season.
01:45Listen, it's tougher to make this roster than it has been in a long time.
01:51Yeah, and Coach talked about that.
01:52In the past couple seasons, they've had time to be patient with some young guys
01:57and develop some prospects.
01:59Well, the fact of the matter is with the expectations that you have now,
02:02it's got to be a little bit more about urgency.
02:04So there are some young guys that they still want to see if they can take that next step,
02:07but the bottom line is you don't really have time to wait right now, right?
02:11This thing is a moving train, and you're either going to be on this thing
02:13or for some guys, you know, maybe doing it somewhere else.
02:17And that is the lay of the land, as you said, off the top of the show.
02:20You're performing for not only the Lions but every team.
02:23And, you know, Danny's breakdown there, there's like one meal in there.
02:27It's going to be a long 72 hours for Brad and Dan
02:30and everybody on the roster waiting to hear what their takeaway is going to be.
02:36But, boy, oh, boy, I think everybody is right in that mode.
02:40Like, let's roll it out and play the regular season.
02:42Yeah, and Coach Campbell, I think he best described it as, you know,
02:45it's kind of bittersweet type of time of year.
02:47You have to say goodbye to some guys that you've had around for a couple months now,
02:51but the sweet part is, man, we're gearing up to play some real football here in a couple weeks.
02:56Grant Stewart on the return of the opening kickoff.
03:00Right down the middle.
03:01There he goes.
03:02Grant Stewart to the 47-yard line.
03:05That's why he's back there.
03:06He played running back in Houston for the Cougars early in his college career.
03:11Look at this explosiveness from a linebacker.
03:14And just the burst, right?
03:16He gets this ball.
03:17He's going right up the hash, follows his block.
03:19Look at that, right up to the middle.
03:21And I know Dan Campbell's going to love that.
03:23He's been waiting for Grant Stewart to punch one of those returns out.
03:27Nice job by Stewart.
03:27You're right.
03:28We talk about him every single game in the preseason, Jason.
03:30Just his athletic ability and the versatility that he brings to this team,
03:34I know excites a lot of these coaches.
03:36He plays like every play matters equally at this elevated level.
03:42There's a motor there as Kyle Allen will lead the offense on first down from the 45.
03:48Great opening field position for the Lions.
03:51And Craig Reynolds gets jostled for a loss of about a half yard.
03:56Kyle Allen's first couple games in the preseason have been very nice after the Hall of Fame game,
04:01which was trouble for the entire offense.
04:04Last two weeks, though, TJ, your thoughts?
04:07Has been doing everything that they have asked him to do.
04:10He's been taking care of the football.
04:11His timing has been very good.
04:13And his accuracy has been much better.
04:15The decision-making, we go back to that Chargers game Hall of Fame,
04:18the decision-making was there.
04:19It was just the accuracy on a couple of those passes.
04:21He has been much better the last couple of preseason games.
04:24It's a run for Reynolds.
04:25It'll be third down and about seven coming up for the Lions.
04:29We'll give you the starting lineups presented by MGM Grand Detroit.
04:33You talked about the wide receiver room.
04:35Isaac Tesla has been fantastic in the preseason.
04:38You see the two tight ends there as well, along with Reynolds.
04:40The offensive line, TJ, where do your eyes go today?
04:43Kingsley and Glocken, the center.
04:44I think if they want to carry a backup true center on this roster,
04:49he is a guy that has been getting all the snaps at that number two offensive line spot.
04:54I think he is having a really nice camp going into his second year.
04:57Obviously, today is going to tell us a lot about the type of player he can be
05:01and if they can count on him come regular season time.
05:03Allen felt the pressure, and down he goes.
05:06He is sacked back at the 39.
05:09Tommy Togiai, the fourth-year man out of Pocatello, Idaho, with the sack.
05:15Yeah, kind of just felt like a coverage sack combined with a little bit of pressure.
05:18Nice job picking up the initial pressure.
05:20I don't think Kyle Allen felt comfortable going anywhere downfield with that football.
05:25Just takes the sack, takes the hit.
05:27Unfortunate start, especially after a spark play you get from your special teams to start the game.
05:30But you know what I do like about that play from Kyle Allen?
05:33What's that?
05:33He didn't force the ball anywhere, right?
05:35You take care of the football.
05:36How many times we talk about seeing four down necessarily isn't the worst thing,
05:40especially with this guy, Jack Fox, able to change the field position in a hurry.
05:44Jack Fox, who went to college down in the Houston area at Rice.
05:51And he boots it away.
05:53Justin Watson for the Texans will let it bounce inside the 10,
05:57and it heads toward the goal line.
06:00Let's see if they covered it up.
06:01What does the official have to say on the far side?
06:04It is very close right at the goal line, and they are going to say touchback.
06:12Jackson Meeks was back there, tried to cover it up.
06:18This is officially a touchback.
06:20Yeah, and just the biggest difference between college and the NFL.
06:23In college, it doesn't matter where your body is.
06:26You just have to keep the ball out of the end zone.
06:28But in the NFL, if any part of your body is over that white line, across that goal line,
06:33and you touch the football, that is a touchback.
06:35That is a very difficult thing for a lot of these young players to learn once they start playing at this level.
06:40It's the right call.
06:41It was very close.
06:43The shoulder was on the line as he touched the ball.
06:47Damian Pierce is the tailback for the Texans on first down.
06:56He hasn't seen any time in the preseason,
06:58so the fourth-year man out of Florida gets the handoff from Graham Mertz
07:01and second down for this Texans team that's been to the playoffs two years in a row.
07:06Defensive line linebackers, who are you watching today other than the guys you mentioned, TJ?
07:10Chris Smith has been getting a lot of compliments from the coaching staff over the last couple weeks.
07:14I know he played a lot for this team last year.
07:16We mentioned at the top of the show how packed and competitive that defensive tackle spot is.
07:21I think Chris Smith is a guy that is very above average at stopping the run.
07:25If he can develop a little bit more of a pass rush,
07:27I think he could be a good option for this team to keep as a depth player.
07:30We saw him in five games last year.
07:32Graham Mertz, former Wisconsin quarterback, goes to Hutchinson, the wide receiver out of Iowa State.
07:39And it's a first down for Houston.
07:44Good timing for Mertz.
07:46Drops back into his back foot.
07:49Just maybe a little too much separation there in the man coverage across the middle of that field.
07:53But that's one thing that we have liked.
07:55The growth over the last against Miami and against Atlanta was the pass rush coming to life a little bit.
08:00That time just, Graham Mertz, way too much time to try to find that wide open receiver of the middle of the field.
08:05Saw Rakiasin make the tackle.
08:07He's been one of those hot spots at the safety slash corner position here in the preseason, getting more safety reps.
08:16Broken eye on first down.
08:18It's a run for Pierce again.
08:19Just trying to get him in the swing of things behind Nick Chubb in that running back room.
08:24It's a pretty deep room there for Houston as Trevor Nowoski made the stop from the linebacker position to the Lions.
08:31And we haven't talked much about Trevor Nowoski this preseason.
08:35He is still a very steady player on this team.
08:38He's playing more off the ball linebacker.
08:40We used to see him a lot on the edge or play that outside linebacker pass rush type role.
08:45He's playing right here, right off the box, about five yards off the field.
08:48The coaches like what he can bring at the second level, whether it's stopping the run, reading downhill, getting in the backfield just like that play.
08:54Nice diagnose from Trevor Nowoski.
08:56And he's just a guy.
08:57He is steady.
08:58Trevor Nowoski is just steady.
09:00And he's been playing a lot of snaps.
09:01This time just watch him kind of read.
09:03Be patient, right?
09:04Come downfield.
09:04Read the double team.
09:05Get out to the outside.
09:07Bring down the ball carrier right at the line of scrimmage.
09:10Excellent job from Trevor Nowoski.
09:11And that's still kind of a new position for him playing off the ball linebacker.
09:15Why is that difficult to transition?
09:17Well, because you have to cover and pass.
09:19Pass situations.
09:20Defensive end.
09:21A lot of time it's just go get the quarterback, right?
09:23Now it's, hey, how do I train my eyes to be able to cover the tight end?
09:27Be able to cover a running back one-on-one out of the backfield.
09:29Those are attributes that are very valuable to any defense at this level.
09:34Third and six.
09:35Mertz had some time.
09:36And now he'll run straight up the middle for the first down for Houston.
09:43Gain of 10.
09:45Just right up the middle here, TJ.
09:47And just not really enough discipline on the interior of that pass rush.
09:51You saw too many guys get past the quarterback.
09:53I think you have to know at that level, hey, I can't get washed outside.
09:57I've got to be able to come back and redirect, retrace my steps back to the inside.
10:01That's just way too much room for any quarterback in this league to operate.
10:05As an offensive lineman, you can feel that happening, right?
10:07Oh, absolutely.
10:08And you can feel the pass rush.
10:09And you can feel what the guy next to you is doing as well.
10:12And you know, hey, as long as I hold down to this block for a couple seconds, man, I'm going to give this quarterback an option just to run it right up the middle.
10:18So you feel that coming, right?
10:19Yes.
10:20And you're like, this is going to be what this play ends up.
10:23You see that middle of the defense just completely disappear, right?
10:27Maybe some out routes, maybe some man coverage.
10:29It's always an option, especially on third and that medium range, which we just saw there.
10:36Quarterbacks.
10:38See Jared Goff do it, too.
10:39Jared Goff's got some ability.
10:41He knows even when the middle of that defense vacates, hey, if you just hold the blocks and just kind of wash out these defensive tackles out to the edge,
10:48I'm still athletic enough to pick up seven or eight yards.
10:51Graham Mertz was there.
10:52It's second down and seven.
10:54They go Pierce again with a jagged cut and a tough run.
10:57He ends up at about the 30.
10:59He'll be third down and one coming up.
11:02Nick Whiteside, Eric Hallett in there as well from the defensive backfield.
11:07Third down and one.
11:09And this is one of those moments, right?
11:10If you make a play as a defensive player, you can draw the awareness of the coaching staff.
11:15Because it's situational football, and these are the plays that matter.
11:18Anytime you get in the red zone, anytime you get third down, the two-minute drill, whatever it might be, situational football,
11:23ways to finding a stop on these sort of downs is, like you said, Jason, how you separate yourself.
11:29Seventh run of the drive for Houston, and right into the middle of that defense.
11:33He may not have it.
11:35Pierce kind of tried to leap over the top.
11:37Stewart's at the bottom of the pile.
11:38Grant Stewart got in there, and you see it's like every third place somebody's got to replace his shoulder pad.
11:44He is in the fray.
11:47Yeah, and that's right down the line, too.
11:49Nice job by the defensive line for the Detroit Lions of just kind of standing their ground and not getting pushed.
11:54I think he's short, Jason.
11:55I think so, too.
11:56He is short, yeah.
11:57Yeah.
11:57So, like we said, another play.
11:59Third down is obviously a big play.
12:00They go for it on fourth down.
12:02This opportunity to get off the field and get your offensive ball back.
12:05We talked about the interior defensive line.
12:08Time to make a play.
12:09Fourth down and one, and there's a flag down.
12:12I don't think this play counted.
12:14It is going to be a false start.
12:16The play did not happen.
12:17Whiteside got the first hit as we hear from Clay Martin.
12:19Full start.
12:20Offense number 83.
12:22Five yards penalty.
12:24Fourth down.
12:25Yeah, just right over here, tight end.
12:28Just moving.
12:28Jack just wobbled in his stance a little bit.
12:31That's Ford Field.
12:31We talked to Jason, you mentioned how loud it was even in pregame and last week, too.
12:37Players love that.
12:37That makes a difference.
12:38What's that?
12:40Exactly.
12:40Yeah, yeah.
12:41Exactly.
12:42That's tough to hear in you.
12:43It has been difficult to hear.
12:45It was on Irv Smith, Jr., and so it sets up a 53-yard field goal for Kaimi Fairbairn,
12:52the all-time leading scorer for the Texans who passed Chris Brown for that mark.
12:57This is on the way, and it spins right on through.
13:01He drilled it for a 3-0 Texans lead, but the Lions defense holds the line on their first
13:10drive.
13:11Imagine this.
13:13A day filled with indulgence.
13:15Bursting.
13:16By Meyer.
13:17And brought to you by Cure Auto Insurance and by MGM Grand, Detroit.
13:253-0.
13:26The Texans with the lead.
13:28Seven runs, one pass on their five-and-a-half-minute sapping drive.
13:35But the Lions force a field goal, and we'll get it back.
13:41That's going to have to be an area where they need to continue the dominance, as once the
13:46opposing offense gets in your territory.
13:48Last year, they were excellent red zone defense.
13:51I know Houston was just outside the red zone that time, but any time you can hold a team
13:55to a field goal, you feel like, especially when you're in the regular season, Jason,
13:58the type of firepower this offense has, teams aren't going to beat you to kick and field
14:01goals.
14:02No, no, no, no.
14:03Love it.
14:03On the return, there is a marker in.
14:05We'll hear from Clay Martin.
14:06Let's not do this again with the penalties here this week.
14:17Made it almost eight minutes.
14:19During the return, holding, receiving team number 40, 10-yard penalty.
14:24It's first down.
14:25I lied.
14:25We did have a false start.
14:26Yeah, there was one.
14:27Zach Horton with that penalty.
14:29Hey, Detroit Lions season tickets have sold out, and the Lions are taking reservations for
14:33the season ticket wait list.
14:35Wait list benefits include priority access to seat selection and early access to single
14:40game and postseason ticket pre-sales.
14:44Another big crowd here today at Ford Field.
14:47Loud crowd on third down and fourth down helped force a false start, and the Lions will set
14:53sail from the 15 on this drive.
14:56Allen, the handoff for Reynolds, and he is doused after a gain of one, and you wouldn't blame
15:02this crowd for getting excited in warm-ups today, TJ, because of this.
15:06Look at that.
15:07We weren't expecting that.
15:08Were we to see Jared Goff out here?
15:10Maybe just wanted to kind of soak in that Ford Field atmosphere a little bit.
15:14I know they're not going to have a game here for a few more weeks, but really cool to see
15:18him and some other starters out there getting some reps in.
15:22And then he's back in the t-shirt game.
15:23Yeah, he's got the earpiece in.
15:24Great move.
15:26Could be our TV producer.
15:27Looks like Bart Fox.
15:30Allen.
15:31Ah, the drop back.
15:32He'll throw right down the middle.
15:33He's got Reynolds, and that's a first down after a couple jukes all the way down to the
15:3728-yard line.
15:39MJ Stewart with the tackle.
15:41You know, we talked about Sione Vocky last week.
15:43He won't play today, but Craig Reynolds is a big piece of this running back room as well.
15:48He's steady.
15:48I think they know exactly what they have with Craig Reynolds.
15:51He's played a lot of football.
15:52They know the type of physicality he can bring, the elusiveness that he has.
15:56And I'll tell you what about Craig, too, is he's reliable on third down, whether it's
15:59catching the ball out of the backfield like we just saw there or diagnosing some blitz
16:03pickups and being able to protect the quarterback on some key third downs.
16:06He's got a couple dozen catches in his career as Tom Kennedy makes this catch.
16:12The former lacrosse star sets up second down.
16:15As you watch the offensive line today, TJ, we heard Dan Campbell mention last week about
16:21pad level, but where do your eyes go in these first couple drives?
16:26Communication.
16:26I want to make sure, see if everybody's on the same page.
16:29And there's been a couple plays each game where you see a free runner up the middle or
16:33an unblocked guy.
16:34That usually means that not everybody's on the same page.
16:37So as long as you get some double teams across the board, get some movement up front, that's
16:40going to let me know that they're taking a step forward and building that chemistry.
16:43A little sidestep from Reynolds of EJ Speed out in space, forcing Barnett to make the
16:49tackle.
16:50Reynolds versus Speed and Reynolds Speed beat Speed.
16:54Great protection.
16:55Nice job by Mann who left tackle there with the spin move inside, washing his guy down
16:59to the inside.
17:00And then Kyle Allen just kind of staying on tempo, just taking what the defense is giving
17:06them.
17:06And anytime you get the ball into Craig Reynolds' hands, he's obviously a threat to either
17:11plow some guys over or definitely get some yards after that catch.
17:14That's what Dan Campbell wants to see, though.
17:16Staying on schedule, making the right decisions.
17:19And that's why, to your point, on that third down earlier when he just took the sack, I would
17:25bet you Dan Campbell was actually happy with the result there.
17:28I would think so.
17:29Compared to what was possible.
17:31Rather than forcing the ball somewhere where now you're putting it at risk.
17:35And checkdowns are not a bad thing.
17:37We see Jared Goff do it a ton.
17:39And especially, you know, with Montgomery and Jameer Gibbs.
17:42But that is a staple of this offense.
17:44Don't force the ball downfield.
17:46Clearly, if we get a one-on-one and we want to take our shots, don't get me wrong.
17:48But if there's any sort of danger, get it down to your running back underneath and let
17:52him pick up some yards.
17:54Now, here's Jacob Sailors, who has been the type of running back who looks like he could
17:59himself pick up a 7-10 split.
18:03He is a rugged, low-to-the-ground runner.
18:05And we have an injured party for Houston right now.
18:11Jake Hansen, former undrafted free agent out of Illinois.
18:16That is the very last thing you want to see in the last preseason game, is an injured player.
18:25Lions have it when we come back.
18:34Three nothing Texans with the lead.
18:37The Lions and Meyer have created a collectible flag.
18:40Oh, there I am.
18:42Thanks, buddy.
18:43Here, put this in your bag.
18:44I know you want to take it home.
18:44Hey, well, you know, it's big enough, obviously, to cover up my entire body.
18:48Who says a blanket?
18:49This is a great collaboration between the Lions and Meyer, by the way.
18:52A collectible flag program in 2024 started to build on the two organizations' year-round
18:58commitment to addressing food insecurity in Michigan.
19:01It's a great collaboration.
19:03You can get them in all Michigan-Meyers stores beginning Wednesday, September 10th.
19:08This throw down the middle is a first down Tesla from Allen.
19:12So, Wednesday, September 10th, you can get these flags.
19:16They'll be available $15 any in-store purchase.
19:19Meyer's donating all proceeds from the sale of each flag to the Detroit Lions Foundation,
19:24which will be used to help increase food access in communities throughout the state of Michigan.
19:28Great program.
19:29Flags will feature a new limited edition design each year, with this year's displaying the team logo underneath the words,
19:36Raise the Roar.
19:37Lions and Meyer work closely during Thanksgiving to pack and distribute meal kits to families in and around the state.
19:43Meyer, the exclusive grocery partner of the Detroit Lions.
19:46It's a tremendous partnership for a great cause, and if you have a very tiny friend, you can cover them up entirely with the flag.
19:55So, that's one benefit that TJ has found so far today.
19:59What do you think of Jacob Saylor's?
20:00I love his style.
20:02I do.
20:02And he's quick.
20:04He's physical.
20:06Once he sees the hole, he goes.
20:08But I still like the elusiveness that he has to hit some of those one-cut bounce backs.
20:12He doesn't like to bounce it a lot to the outside.
20:14It's just, hey, if there's two or three there, I'm going to get two or three and hopefully push the pile for another couple.
20:18But even like that play right there, you see just a little quick step.
20:21Right?
20:22Offensive lines getting feet on the edge a little bit.
20:24Okay.
20:24Left foot in the ground.
20:25Cut back to the middle.
20:26Getting north.
20:27That's, I think, long way of saying.
20:29I love the way he just goes straight up the field.
20:31He doesn't like to run sideline to sideline.
20:33He likes to get north and south and pick up positive yards.
20:36Have not seen many negative plays when he's been in the game.
20:39He always finds a way to get at least three or four, it seems like.
20:41Yeah, and Reynolds has been good in this first quarter as well.
20:44Sailors just went off a moment ago.
20:46Looked like he was limping slightly.
20:48So, two minutes to go in this first.
20:52Second drive for the Lions.
20:53Reynolds once again the tailback.
20:55And Allen will take a shot.
20:57Down the sideline and in there.
20:59It's another touchdown.
21:01For Isaac Tesla, who worms his way to his home pylon.
21:13This dude erupts.
21:15I can get used to seeing that.
21:17Just a simple fade route.
21:18He's going to work down.
21:20Stays a couple yards inside that white line.
21:22And the hands, Jason.
21:24We love it.
21:24We tried to get Coach to give us some compliments on him yesterday.
21:27He said, I don't want to do that.
21:28I like where he's at right now.
21:31I do not want to jinx anything when it comes to this kid.
21:34He is making plays like that is a fast track to seeing game action.
21:39And he is going to be hard to keep off the field when they start the season in a couple weeks.
21:43I mean, that was phenomenal.
21:46Your thoughts on the celebration.
21:49A scale of 1 to 10.
21:51I give that about an 8.7.
21:53We got the worm coming up.
21:55The hands right over the shoulder.
21:56First great ball placement from Kyle Allen.
21:58Let's check out the worm.
22:00Let's check out.
22:00Ah, there we go.
22:02I know Kyle Allen wants to get in on this as well.
22:04Yep.
22:05Perfect throw.
22:06Great call, Coach.
22:08And Jameer Gibbs.
22:10Woo.
22:10Isaac Tesla is an impressive young man, isn't he?
22:17Auto insurance.
22:18Isaac Tesla's third touchdown of the preseason every week.
22:22He does something neon, something electric for this Lions team.
22:27A kid who won a state title in this very building.
22:33Back here as a Detroit Lion.
22:35And the Texans will get it back on this return.
22:39And the coverage is pretty good for the moment.
22:42But Powell breaks free.
22:43Cornell Powell across the 49 to about midfield.
22:48But let's go back to the touchdown.
22:55Right over the shoulder.
22:56Great ball placement, too, in the late hands.
22:58Nice job, Kyle Allen, putting it right in stride.
23:01Phenomenal job by Tesla going and using those big hands like we've seen time after time.
23:09Okay.
23:10Cupid drawback here.
23:11Bowe.
23:13He's going to earn a nickname sooner or later, don't you think, Jason?
23:16Very quickly.
23:17I know they're rare in sports these days, but it might be the worms after that touchdown.
23:22So, after the Smith return, that was the other number 11, Tremont Smith.
23:28Graham Mertz right down the middle with a laser to pick up a first down to Jaden Higgins.
23:34The Texans get only receivers from Iowa State.
23:37They have three of them on the roster.
23:39They have Hutchinson, Higgins, and Noel, two rookies from Iowa State.
23:43And then Xavier Hutchinson, the third-year man out of Iowa State.
23:47So, I guarantee our ratings and aims are great today.
23:51Pretty safe bet that they're going to have.
23:54They're watching it and mods and aims.
23:57Yeah.
23:5870 seconds to go, quarter number one.
24:02It's a pitch for Pierce.
24:03And he gets through the line and runs into the former Texan, Zach Cunningham,
24:08who had over 500 tackles as a Houston Texan.
24:12He flowed over well there.
24:13Great read by him.
24:14And you can tell Zach Cunningham just has a ton of experience in this league.
24:18You're going to get an outside toss there from Houston.
24:20And he just does a nice job of going right down the sideline, right?
24:22Not getting caught up in the wash with the pulling guards, with the down blocks.
24:26Stay on track.
24:26Get to where you think the running back's going to be.
24:29And he is doing a phenomenal job this preseason of finishing tackles, too.
24:33It doesn't seem like he misses a lot once he gets to that call carrier.
24:35No, that was one-on-one.
24:36And he was the victor for sure.
24:39Gain a two.
24:40Play action for Pierce.
24:42Mertz scanning and rolling.
24:44Graham Mertz on the run.
24:46He pumps and dives for the first down,
24:49throwing his body across the line to gain.
24:52Grant Stewart was closest.
24:53A couple nice runs from Mertz here.
24:55Didn't have that on the bingo card,
24:57seeing Graham Mertz scrambled a little bit.
24:59I think Grant Stewart just, man,
25:02he got caught up in between,
25:03ah, do I want to go hit the quarterback,
25:04or do I want to go find the tight end and stay in coverage?
25:07Kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
25:09That time he tries to stay in coverage.
25:10A nice job by Graham Mertz of just taking what the defense has given him.
25:13I like Graham Mertz watching his replay on the video board here at Ford Field,
25:17enjoying his running.
25:18Seven-three Lions after one.
25:20Why settle for good when you can be on the video board?
25:24They're replaying the Isaac Tesla touchdown.
25:26Why wouldn't you?
25:28Again, he breaks free.
25:31Kyle Allen, a beautiful throw to get him to score.
25:34And Allen, by the way, on that touchdown drive was four for four.
25:38Stock continues to rise for Isaac Tesla.
25:40First down, Mertz, short set.
25:47He'll go to the out route,
25:48and Jaden Higgins makes the catch
25:50as we go downstairs to Danny and Marcus Davenport.
25:53Yeah, the veteran defensive end, Marcus Davenport,
25:56began working with the training staff here in Detroit this past spring,
25:59this past spring, rather,
26:00and they noticed something different.
26:01The defensive end,
26:02who's been plagued with injuries throughout his NFL career,
26:05including a torn triceps last season,
26:07was working on improving his durability,
26:09and as a result, he came out a better player.
26:11The staff noticed right away,
26:13and it's giving Kelvin Shepard, defensive coordinator,
26:16all the confidence in the world
26:17that he and Hutch can be two forceful bookends
26:20on this Detroit defensive line.
26:22Oh, you want forceful?
26:23How about Grant Stewart,
26:24who just single-leg takedown Woody Morris?
26:28Goodness gracious, he's rabid.
26:31He takes it personal, I think,
26:33when running backs try to come right at him.
26:35He's awesome.
26:36He just plays with that edge and plays angry,
26:39driving it back to one leg.
26:42Little rope down right there.
26:44Yeah, that just,
26:45how can his energy not possibly be contagious
26:48in that linebacker room
26:49and really around that entire defense?
26:51Man, he brings it every single day.
26:53I mean,
26:53he's fun to watch.
26:54A kick return all the way out to short of midfield today.
26:57We're seeing the full menu
26:58as Graham Mertz will throw,
27:01and he's got the first down to the 16.
27:04He's got the tight end,
27:07Bryant, Harrison Bryant.
27:08But to Danny's point,
27:09Dan Campbell told us a couple weeks ago,
27:11Marcus Davenport moving better,
27:13bending better,
27:14just overall athleticism improved
27:16because of that individual work.
27:17He's got all the ability in the world,
27:19and we all know,
27:20you don't really have to mention it,
27:21but just the availability.
27:22If you can have him for the entirety of the season,
27:25that is going to make your defense better.
27:26That's what they're counting on,
27:27and that's what Marcus is counting on as well.
27:29He knows the expectations for himself
27:31and for this defense,
27:32and he is a huge part
27:34of what they want to do defensively.
27:35Just a perfect bookend
27:36to the speed
27:38and the quickness and agility
27:39you have with Aiden Hutchinson
27:40on the opposite side.
27:41A guy that can push the pocket,
27:42a guy that can stop the run as well
27:44because you're going to get a team,
27:45a lot of teams, Jason,
27:46that don't want to run the ball
27:47at Aiden Hutchinson.
27:49So if you say,
27:50okay,
27:50well,
27:50the next option is
27:51we have to run at Marcus Davenport,
27:53good luck
27:54when he's healthy.
27:55He is just that type of playmaker.
27:56Just got to stay healthy,
27:58and it sounds like,
27:58you know,
27:59he changed some things personally
28:00this offseason
28:01and this training camp
28:02and really rolling into the season,
28:04and he's feeling pretty good about himself,
28:05and I know the coaches and players,
28:07they're excited to see what 92 can do
28:09once he gets on the field here
28:10in a couple weeks in Green Bay.
28:11For sure,
28:12and if the open field tackling
28:13is like what we've seen so far
28:15from the second line,
28:16including Cunningham there
28:17on Woody Marks,
28:19that's a good sign.
28:21Second down,
28:24it is Marks,
28:25and he is in.
28:26It's a touchdown
28:27for the rookie out of USC,
28:30Woody Marks.
28:31And it looked like
28:36maybe Keith Cooper
28:38might have had a shot
28:39right in the backfield,
28:41and yeah,
28:42just could never find his.
28:43Somebody's getting mauled
28:44up there in the middle.
28:46Keith Cooper had a shot
28:47there in the backfield,
28:48just I think by the time
28:48he collected his feet,
28:50the running back
28:51was just already right by him.
28:52Yeah,
28:52nice play.
28:53Keith Cooper's doing
28:55a sneaky nice job
28:57of kind of pushing
28:58that line of scrimmage
28:59right now.
29:00Yeah,
29:00they are.
29:00And getting up
29:02to that second level.
29:03We've seen the linebackers
29:03and some safeties
29:04have to be very active
29:05in this run game.
29:06We'd like to see
29:06if that defense
29:07can make some adjustments,
29:08start getting some penetration
29:09in the backfield,
29:10see if you can get
29:10some free runners
29:11out there to force
29:12some negative plays.
29:14Against Woody Marks
29:15and Houston,
29:16who takes the lead,
29:1710-7.
29:21Dave,
29:22J-Bat is here.
29:23Thank you for stopping by.
29:24Thanks for having me, Jason.
29:25So glad to be here.
29:26It's our pleasure.
29:27We're very excited
29:28to see the Honolulu Blue
29:30go green coming up
29:31in a few months here.
29:32I know you're very excited
29:33about bringing the Spartans
29:34to Ford Field.
29:35Absolutely.
29:36What an amazing venue
29:37and thank you so much
29:38to the Lions
29:39for partnering with us
29:40and for you guys,
29:40TJ,
29:41you guys having us today.
29:42It's an incredible venue.
29:44It was my first trip
29:45into Ford Field
29:45and, you know,
29:47certainly one of the loudest
29:49and best
29:49in the entire country,
29:52in the NFL
29:52and we're so excited
29:54to be back here again
29:55for the first time
29:56or second time
29:57in three years.
29:58So excited to be back.
29:59Yeah,
29:59the Penn State game
30:00a couple years ago.
30:01You got Maryland
30:01coming up this year
30:03and college football
30:04starting very soon.
30:05Six days, right?
30:06You're underway.
30:07You know what?
30:08Week zero today.
30:09Week zero today.
30:09So actually on board
30:10and, you know,
30:11we were there,
30:12Michigan State.
30:13One week,
30:14we're going to be
30:15at home
30:16against Western
30:17Western Michigan.
30:18Yep.
30:18And, you know,
30:19sales are going well,
30:20almost sold out.
30:21So anybody not have tickets yet,
30:22we'd love to have them
30:23in the building.
30:24Very excited to see
30:25Hayden Childs
30:25in another year
30:27as the quarterback.
30:28Everything I've read,
30:29he is even more
30:31commanding of the offense,
30:32like really in charge.
30:34And it's a team
30:35that feels like
30:36it's on the rise
30:37in the Big Ten
30:37as Hendon Hooker
30:38drops it off
30:40over the middle
30:40for Sailors.
30:41That's a first down.
30:42What's your feeling
30:43about this team?
30:44Jonathan Smith
30:44coming over year two.
30:46How do you feel
30:47about the Spartans?
30:47I have a lot of confidence
30:49in that process.
30:50You know,
30:50the confidence
30:52coming out of the building,
30:53the confidence of development,
30:54been to several practices,
30:56several scrimmages,
30:56certainly made progress
30:57way ahead of last year.
30:59You know,
30:59certainly one of the strategies
31:00was retain a lot of our guys.
31:03We were able to do that
31:03in the offseason,
31:04brought in some really dynamic
31:06kind of additions,
31:07heavily invested
31:08in the offensive line,
31:09defensive line,
31:10so important to win
31:11in the Big Ten, right?
31:12And so we've done that,
31:13feel really good about it,
31:14excited to see him
31:15take the field in a week.
31:16How big of a challenge
31:17is the new landscape
31:18of college football
31:19with the transfer portal,
31:21with the NIL money?
31:22I'm sure it can be
31:23a pain for you guys,
31:24but if you start to,
31:26like you mentioned,
31:26getting some players up there,
31:27it could also be
31:28a benefit as well.
31:28Yeah, you know,
31:29I kind of always thought
31:31of it as an opportunity,
31:32TJ.
31:33You know,
31:33at the end of the day,
31:34certainly it's different,
31:35very different,
31:36but it's an opportunity,
31:38and particularly as we move
31:39into the post-house
31:40settlement era,
31:41it becomes an opportunity
31:42for us to move forward,
31:43take ground,
31:44and as long as you're able
31:46to deploy it well,
31:47be smart about it,
31:48be strategic,
31:49and have this incredible
31:50fan base that we have,
31:51it'll be a continued
31:52opportunity for us.
31:53As we let you go,
31:55and we let everybody know
31:56that it's November the 29th
31:58here at Ford Field
31:59is the Maryland game.
32:00How big of a football fan
32:01is Tom Izzo?
32:03There's no bigger football fan
32:04than Tom Izzo,
32:05and nobody at Michigan State
32:07that cares more about
32:08our entire athletic department,
32:10including the football team,
32:11and so, yeah,
32:12he, from day one,
32:14he's as committed
32:15as I am,
32:16as we are,
32:16that Michigan State
32:17Spartan football
32:18is going to be back
32:19and back to where it belongs
32:20as a top 10 athletic
32:21department in the country.
32:22Very excited to see you
32:23all this year.
32:24I'm sure I'll be at
32:24Breslin Center
32:25at some point
32:26for basketball too
32:27and maybe for football
32:28as well as this
32:29from Hendon Hooker
32:30and it leads to some
32:31jostling down the sideline
32:32and a fourth down
32:33coming up.
32:34Jay Bat,
32:34thank you so much
32:35for stopping by.
32:36Thanks so much, Jason.
32:36So nice to see you.
32:37Pleasure to do it.
32:38Really appreciate it.
32:39Nice to meet you.
32:40Appreciate it, guys.
32:40Go green.
32:42I feel the obligation
32:44to say go white
32:45because there's nobody
32:46to answer him.
32:48It's fourth down
32:48and four coming up.
32:50Here's a second.
32:50I know you weren't
32:51going to do it.
32:59Football is better
33:00with Michigan State
33:02competing.
33:03Yes.
33:03To bring the rivalries back.
33:05And having covered
33:06Jonathan Smith
33:07at Oregon State
33:09and what they did
33:10with that program
33:11even as they left
33:12the old version
33:14of the Pac-12.
33:16He is a really
33:17thoughtful guy.
33:18He's building
33:19something there
33:20and it'll be exciting
33:21to watch.
33:21They'll be at Ford Field
33:22on the 29th of November.
33:24Texans have it
33:25after this.
33:27Imagine this.
33:29A day filled
33:29with indulgence.
33:30Meijer
33:31and brought to you
33:33by Cure Auto Insurance
33:35and by
33:36Jack Daniels.
33:40That's a high launch
33:41angle on the bow
33:42and arrow
33:42for Tesla.
33:44High fly ball
33:45to left field
33:46and then he goes
33:46full ground ball
33:47on the worm.
33:49That was solid.
33:50Like 8.7?
33:53I think
33:54I think you're
33:55undervaluing that.
33:56I don't know.
33:57I'm a stickler.
33:59Okay.
34:00Here is Woody Marks
34:01on the run
34:02once again.
34:02The rookie out of USC.
34:03You know how he got
34:04the nickname Woody?
34:06No.
34:06So every...
34:08But I am fascinated.
34:09So he...
34:09For Halloween
34:10he dressed up
34:12as Woody
34:12from Toy Story.
34:13And you might say,
34:14Jason,
34:15you don't just do that
34:16once and get a nickname.
34:17No, no, no.
34:18Every year
34:19he dressed up
34:20as Woody
34:21from Toy Story
34:22growing up.
34:22So he had
34:23all these
34:23different costumes
34:24as Woody
34:26from Toy Story.
34:27The running back
34:27for the Texans.
34:28Different costume
34:29every year?
34:30Yeah, kept like
34:31growing into
34:32a new costume.
34:33I was going to say
34:34his parents
34:34would probably be happy
34:35but you're still
34:36buying a costume
34:37every single year.
34:39That's commitment
34:39to the pit bull.
34:40That is.
34:43Second down
34:44and seven
34:44for Graham Mertz
34:46with time again.
34:47There is Woody
34:47Marks again
34:48in the clutches
34:49of Steward.
34:52And it's very
34:53close to the
34:54first down.
34:54Mitchell Agude
34:55is there as well.
34:57They are going
34:58to move the sticks.

35:11If you ever see
35:12T.J. Lang
35:13around town
35:14and you just can't
35:15get his attention
35:15like take a picture
35:16or something
35:16just say
35:17all-inclusive
35:18food and beverage
35:18and he immediately
35:20will turn your way.
35:22Either or.
35:23They don't have to be.
35:24That's right.
35:25You take either.
35:25They don't have to be both.
35:26That's right.
35:26I love it.
35:27I love it.
35:28Jakob Johnson
35:28with the Keds there
35:29at Gain and Nine.
35:30I'm not wrong.
35:31Am I?
35:31No.
35:32Okay.
35:33Well, depends on
35:34the establishment
35:34I think.
35:36This guy's got standards.
35:38No.
35:41Second and one.
35:42The beverages
35:43doesn't matter
35:43on the establishment.
35:44I like it.
35:45Food is, yeah.
35:46We're learning so much.
35:48Oh, you didn't know
35:49that already?
35:49No, you're right.
35:51You're right.
35:52Nobody buried the lead.
35:54Second and one
35:55for the Texans
35:56from right at the 30.
35:59It is Marks again.
36:00A little hesitation
36:01and a first down.
36:02The Texans
36:03on their first two drives
36:04were over six yards
36:05of play.
36:06We have not seen that
36:07and I'm not saying
36:08that to raise alarm bells.
36:10The Lions defense
36:10has been consistently good
36:12and we're not
36:12seeing any starters.
36:14Texans have done
36:14a nice job offensively.
36:15They have
36:16and really with the run game
36:17starts with there.
36:18Just Lions
36:19can't really find a way
36:20to get off those
36:21double teams
36:21or play in the
36:22Houston's backfield.
36:24It kind of looks like
36:25that offensive line
36:27for the Texans
36:27is really starting
36:28to kind of establish
36:30that line of scrimmage
36:31which is going
36:32to hurt you defensively
36:33any time they run the ball.
36:37Mertz on play action.
36:39He looks to his left.
36:40He throws that way
36:41and he's on target again.
36:42Some bullseyes here
36:43from Mertz.
36:45He's got this to Powell.
36:46Cornell Powell,
36:48the former Clemson Tiger.
36:51And that's the effect
36:52of the run game.
36:54That's the effect
36:54of Houston having
36:55a lot of success
36:56running the ball
36:56is now it opens up
36:57the play action game
36:58and if this is
36:59a copycat league
37:00we obviously know
37:01that's a big part
37:02of what the Lions
37:03want to do offensively
37:04but once you start
37:05running the ball
37:06now you're starting
37:06to force the safeties
37:07and the linebackers.
37:09Anybody who's in coverage
37:10over the middle of the field
37:10you're starting to force them
37:11to keep their eyes
37:12in the backfield
37:13just a little bit longer
37:13because you start
37:14to feel like
37:15I've got to do something
37:16a little bit better
37:16to stop this run game.
37:17On a short set
37:19he misfired to Daniel Jackson
37:21the coverage
37:21from DJ Miller
37:23it feels a little bit
37:25Graham Mertz transferred
37:26Wisconsin to Florida
37:27these drives have felt
37:28like Wisconsin Badger drives
37:30right play action
37:31a lot of run game
37:33and I think that just
37:35preseason football too
37:36I mean you want to try
37:37to establish a line
37:38of scrimmage
37:39and you want to try
37:39to make it comfortable
37:40for the quarterback
37:41you don't want to live
37:41in the world
37:43where every play
37:43is second and long
37:44and third and long
37:45and you're one dimensional
37:46and now you're just
37:47throwing the ball
37:48you don't want to be able
37:48to do that.
37:51Second and ten here
37:52and they'll toss it
37:54for Marks
37:54Woody Marks
37:56is swallowed up
37:57third and long
37:58coming up
37:58and every time
37:59the Lions are on defense
38:00and the Texans
38:01are on third down
38:02the opposing team
38:03fans are encouraged
38:04to get on their feet
38:05get loud and wave
38:06custom third down cards
38:07for every stop
38:08the Lions make
38:08on third down
38:09Rocket and the Lions
38:10will donate
38:11$313 to Connect 313
38:13Connect 313's mission
38:16is to bring
38:16the digital divide
38:17bridge the digital divide
38:19by ensuring
38:19every Detroiter
38:20is fully digitally included
38:22improving the quality
38:23of life
38:23for all residents
38:24throughout the last
38:25three years
38:25we've donated
38:26$169,736
38:29to Connect 313
38:30a fantastic cause
38:33crowd is loud
38:34on third down
38:35and 11
38:36for Mertz
38:37he steps into it
38:38down the middle
38:39he's got the first down
38:40it is
38:42Juwan Winfrey
38:43the 5th year man
38:44out of Colorado
38:45for a gain
38:46of 25
38:47in the middle
38:47of the defense
38:48and I know
38:49Rak Yassin
38:50is kind of
38:51set with himself
38:52he just felt like
38:53maybe if I read
38:53the quarterback's eyes
38:54just a little bit
38:55quicker
38:55you'll see him
38:56coming to that picture
38:56just a couple yards
38:58outside
38:58but you know
38:59that's really tough
39:00on the secondary
39:00when Graham Mertz
39:01is just standing
39:02back there
39:02for 4, 5, 6
39:04looking into
39:04first, second, third
39:05this defensive line
39:06has got to start
39:07generating a pass rush
39:08but you have to be able
39:09to win your one-on-ones
39:10if you want to stand out
39:11to your coaches
39:11and create some turnovers
39:14as well
39:15Dare Agumbawale
39:16gets to the outside
39:18and he has a first
39:19and goal
39:20for the Texans
39:22that's Allen
39:24on the stop
39:24but to gain a 19
39:25you may remember
39:26Agumbawale
39:27from a couple of years ago
39:29when he was forced
39:30into kicking duty
39:31to not get a field goal
39:34for the Texans
39:35when they ran out
39:36of special teamers
39:37versatility
39:38the more you can do
39:40against Baltimore
39:40I think it was
39:42at Tampa Bay
39:43back in 2023
39:44with an injury
39:46to Kaimi Fairbairn
39:48that week
39:49against the Bucks
39:50first and goal
39:53Mertz
39:58end zone
39:59incomplete
40:00for Quintez Cephas
40:02said it felt
40:05like a Badger drive
40:06that's a former Badger
40:07Cephas
40:08the target
40:08Tyson Russell
40:09the rookie
40:10out of Vanderbilt
40:11on coverage
40:13Cephas started
40:14his career
40:15here in Detroit
40:15and had some
40:17injuries pop up
40:19a few other things
40:20but he was always
40:22a pretty dynamic
40:23athlete
40:24we used to watch
40:25him just with
40:25some of the jump
40:26balls even back
40:26in college
40:27he was a young
40:27player
40:28with a catch
40:29radius that he
40:30has
40:30good to see
40:32he's still
40:32getting a chance
40:33to try to prove
40:34he can stick
40:34around in this league
40:3537 catches
40:37in his time
40:38with the Lions
40:39Mertz
40:41end zone
40:42again
40:43Cephas
40:43again
40:44to high point
40:45it
40:45and it's a touchdown
40:46exactly as you
40:48described
40:48it's against DJ
40:49Miller
40:50who came away
40:51with the football
40:52but Cephas
40:53is in
40:53for a Texans
40:55touchdown
40:55and everything
40:58we just talked
40:59about with Cephas
41:00I know a lot
41:01of Lions fans
41:02will remember
41:02that but just
41:03that's pretty
41:03good coverage
41:04and nice job
41:06by Cephas
41:06going up
41:06with late hands
41:07and look at him
41:08look at the strong
41:08hands
41:09you can see there
41:09that that ball
41:10is trying to get
41:11ripped away
41:11by DJ Miller
41:12that's good coverage
41:13DJ Miller
41:14does everything
41:14you're supposed
41:14to do
41:15try to drive
41:16your hands
41:16right through
41:17the receiver's
41:17hands
41:17rip out that
41:18ball
41:18couldn't have
41:19Cephas
41:19that time
41:20just
41:20with a little
41:22bit better
41:22rep
41:22sometimes
41:23I know
41:23you don't
41:24like to hear
41:24it Jason
41:24but sometimes
41:25you have to
41:25compliment
41:26the other
41:26team as well
41:27those guys
41:28are NFL players
41:29and you know
41:30sometimes you
41:30have to accept
41:31the fact
41:31that they're
41:32going to make
41:32some plays
41:33that was a
41:33nice catch
41:34you don't
41:34think I'd
41:34like to hear
41:34that
41:35I don't
41:36think a lot
41:36of people
41:37like to hear
41:37it but
41:37you know
41:38there's a lot
41:39of people
41:39you don't
41:39like to hear
41:40the facts
41:40sometimes
41:40into the line
41:44that was weird
41:45yikes
41:46well
41:47Bear Bairns
41:49looking down
41:49at his
41:50landing spot
41:51Tommy Townsend
41:53came up
41:54with it
41:55he did not
41:59really ever
42:00get it down
42:01and then
42:01Bear Bairn
42:02whiffed
42:02he just totally
42:05missed
42:05percent last year
42:09best single season
42:10in Lions history
42:12completion percentage
42:13David Montgomery
42:14Jameer Gibbs
42:15in that backfield
42:17this is a well
42:18stocked offense
42:19you don't get to see
42:20it in the preseason
42:21but in a couple weeks
42:22they will be raring to go
42:24against the Packers
42:27it's 15 days away
42:28the regular season
42:30in the NFL
42:31as Sailors
42:34the return
42:35Jacob Sailors
42:36gets clocked
42:38to the 24
42:38downstairs to Danny
42:40running back
42:41David Montgomery
42:41had a busy offseason
42:42completing courses
42:43and internships
42:44so he could finally
42:46get this
42:46walk across the stage
42:48and graduate
42:48from Iowa State
42:50a degree
42:50he had started
42:51almost 10 years ago
42:52he had to complete
42:53two courses
42:54during last season
42:55two more
42:55in the offseason
42:56in addition
42:57to earning
42:57internship credit
42:58with the Boy Scouts of America
43:00and the Boys and Girls Club
43:01it was a promise
43:02he made to his mom
43:03when he started college
43:04that if it was for free
43:05he was going to get
43:06his degree
43:06and he told me
43:07the feeling of accepting
43:08his diploma
43:09was way better
43:10than when he got the call
43:11for the NFL draft
43:12because no one
43:13can take that degree
43:14from him
43:15that is awesome
43:16good on David Montgomery
43:18who has been such a weapon
43:20for this team
43:20but is beloved
43:21in Ames, Iowa
43:22their team by the way
43:23is starting the college
43:24football season today
43:25they're in Dublin
43:26playing Farmageddon
43:27as they call it
43:28against Kansas State
43:29but man
43:30David Montgomery
43:30an unbelievably productive
43:32running back
43:33and he and Gibbs
43:34I don't know
43:35how you stop that
43:36with all the weapons
43:38the Lions have
43:39in that room
43:39not a lot of teams have
43:41obviously the numbers
43:43that they put up
43:43last year
43:44historic offensively
43:46with points scored
43:47with the yards
43:48that they were able
43:49to gain
43:50and just the uniqueness
43:52that John Morton
43:53is going to have
43:53I know Ben Johnson
43:54used to talk about
43:55trying to get them
43:55on the field
43:56at the same time
43:56I didn't see that
43:57a ton
43:57last year
43:59I'm really hoping
43:59to see
44:00hoping that
44:00that's going to be
44:01something we're going
44:01to see more of
44:02this year
44:02getting two of your
44:03better athletes
44:03on the field
44:04at the same time
44:05and really putting
44:05defenses in a bind
44:06the way David Montgomery
44:08said it last week
44:09like well we can
44:10there's John Morton
44:12somewhere
44:12which which one is
44:13you want to play
44:15whack-a-mole for us
44:16I know that's Don
44:18Muehlbach up there
44:18but I'm not going
44:20to circle the wrong
44:21guy Jason
44:21unless you want
44:22to come
44:22no I just
44:23play with this
44:24again we're playing
44:25home improvement
44:25we have Wilson
44:26there looking over
44:28the fence
44:28the one in the
44:29white hat I would
44:30say
44:30a good one
44:31yes
44:31nailed it
44:32very descript
44:37well they said
44:38TV don't have to be
44:39too descriptive
44:39because the people
44:40can see for themselves
44:40people can see it
44:41for themselves
44:42yep thanks for
44:43figuring it out
44:43tour guide
44:44figure it out
44:45third down
44:46and there is a
44:48marker in
44:49sailors trying to
44:50twist his way
44:51to the first down
44:52line
44:52communication was
44:54just thrown off
44:55there that was
44:55one of our keys
44:56to the game
44:56making sure
44:57everybody's on
44:57the same page
44:58looks like about
44:59half the line
45:00moved before
45:01the ball was
45:02snapped
45:03by the offense
45:04number 83
45:05did not reset
45:06penalties for five
45:07it's fourth down
45:08okay so it's
45:09fourth down
45:10we'll see what
45:12Dan Campbell
45:12wants to do
45:13but there I mean
45:14what do you have
45:16to lose
45:16they declined
45:17the penalty
45:17I thought there
45:19were whistles
45:19in the middle
45:20of that play
45:20didn't you Jason
45:21you know
45:22with an illegal
45:22shift
45:23they did
45:23adjudicate it
45:24properly there
45:25but I agree
45:26with you
45:26it felt like
45:27almost before
45:27the play was
45:28over
45:28anyway
45:29false start
45:30or illegal
45:32shift I guess
45:32but hey
45:33fourth and one
45:34is probably
45:35a better percentage
45:36than if you
45:36were to move
45:37back to third
45:37and sixth
45:38and there's
45:39that start
45:40yep
45:40false start
45:41it's on Horton
45:43and now you
45:44don't have choice
45:45oh you always
45:48have a choice
45:48it's a good
45:50point
45:51no I'm
45:51I'm with you
45:52fourth and sixth
45:53in the preseason
45:54you can't do it
45:55yes
45:56back to back
45:56penalties are
45:57killers
45:57especially
45:58in a legal
46:00shift
46:00and a false
46:01start
46:01those are just
46:02mental penalties
46:02coach talked
46:03about a couple
46:04weeks ago
46:04you know
46:04we can
46:05we can deal
46:06and coach
46:07with the
46:07holding calls
46:08or the
46:09physical penalties
46:10right
46:11the block
46:11and the bat
46:11we can coach
46:12that
46:12but if guys
46:13are out there
46:13competing
46:14those things
46:14are going to
46:14happen
46:15we have to
46:16eliminate
46:16the mental
46:17penalties
46:18just kicking
46:18ourselves
46:19and you know
46:20with very
46:21avoidable
46:22distractions
46:24very avoidable
46:25penalties
46:26right
46:26that's right
46:27have to be
46:27better

47:05in the second
47:05quarter
47:06just in case
47:07you thought
47:07you'd seen
47:08everything
47:08in the preseason
47:09we had a
47:10kicker whiff
47:11on an extra
47:13point
47:13just fully
47:14witnessed right
47:15through it
47:16and some timing
47:17issues with the
47:18holder Townsend
47:19Houston has it
47:20from the 31
47:21Mertz
47:22hits Powell
47:23the quick hitter
47:24and he's across
47:26the 35
47:26into the Lions
47:27secondary
47:28and it's nice
47:28to see the
47:29Lions secondary
47:30the first teamers
47:31on the sideline
47:32taking it all in
47:33like starting
47:34pitchers together
47:35expecting a lot
47:35of big things
47:36from these guys
47:37Brian Branch
47:37Arnold back there
47:38Jack Campbell's
47:39covering somebody
47:40up
47:40Amik Robertson
47:41Kirby
47:41see if he can
47:42get the double
47:43digit interceptions
47:44close last year
47:45led the league
47:45expecting a lot
47:46of things from
47:47those guys
47:47especially while
47:48you wait
47:48to kind of get
47:49some guy
47:50Lee McNeil
47:50healthy back
47:51on that defensive
47:51line
47:52you're gonna have
47:52some moving pieces
47:53up there
47:54so if that
47:54those guys
47:55in the secondary
47:55can start off
47:57fast
47:57get some takeaways
47:58really be locked
47:59out in coverage
47:59man that's gonna
48:00let that defense
48:01really start to
48:01really start to
48:02progress
48:03and I like it
48:04and DJ Reed
48:05too can't leave
48:06him out
48:06they're expecting
48:07a lot of big
48:07things from him
48:08as well this year
48:08Houston has the
48:14ball at the
48:14two minute warning
48:15leading 16 to
48:167
48:172nd down
48:20and 5
48:20for the Texans
48:21who've been
48:21very efficient
48:22behind Graham
48:23Mertz
48:24gotta get this
48:26pass rush
48:27going a little
48:27bit
48:27Isaac Cuckoo
48:28Nate Lynn
48:28out there
48:29Keith Cooper
48:29see if anybody
48:30can get in the
48:30backfield
48:31and be disruptive
48:31Lynn on the
48:36near side
48:37here he comes
48:38Mertz
48:38gets it away
48:39again down
48:40the middle
48:40it's a first
48:41down for
48:42Powell
48:42one more
48:43time
48:43gain a 10
48:44and now
48:45you're really
48:46putting your
48:46secondary in
48:47a bind by
48:47being able
48:48to not
48:48bring a
48:48pass rush
48:49because
48:49Kelvin
48:50Shepard's
48:50gonna fire
48:51both inside
48:52linebackers
48:53that time
48:53which obviously
48:54takes a couple
48:54guys out of
48:55coverage
48:55leaves a lot
48:56of one-on-ones
48:57Houston did a
48:57nice job of
48:58picking up the
48:58blitz
48:59you can tell
49:00he's man
49:00Kelvin Shepard
49:01he wants to
49:01see some more
49:02from these
49:02young guys
49:02go compete
49:03right
49:04we got some
49:04spots still
49:05available
49:05somebody go
49:06start separating
49:07yourself
49:07make a name
49:08for yourself
49:08show us
49:09that you want
49:09to be on
49:09this team
49:10create a
49:11turnover
49:11right
49:12I mean
49:12we just
49:12have nice
49:12way to do
49:13it
49:13take aways
49:14from this
49:16defense at
49:16the clip
49:17that we
49:17expect
49:18in the
49:18regular
49:18season
49:19when the
49:19starters
49:19are there
49:20as Woody
49:20Marks
49:21catches that
49:22check down
49:22and he gets
49:23caught by
49:24George
49:24and Steward
49:25Houston's not
49:28in a major
49:28rush here
49:29they put
49:30quite a bit
49:31of parking
49:32into the
49:32meter
49:32evidently
49:33and the
49:35three timeouts
49:36they still
49:36have the
49:37entire
49:37middle of
49:38the field
49:38available as
49:39well
49:39and it's
49:40false
49:40dark
49:40looks like
49:40the center
49:41maybe
49:41twitched
49:43that ball
49:44a little
49:44bit
49:44before
49:44he snapped
49:45it
49:46this is fine
49:49though
49:49gives you
49:50a little
49:50bit
49:50extra
49:51time
49:51to catch
49:52your breath
49:52false
49:52start
49:53you'll see
49:53wholesale
49:53changes
49:54to the
49:54five-yard
49:55penalty
49:56wholesale
49:56changes
49:57to the
49:57officiating
49:58crew
49:58in the
49:59second half
50:00they're going
50:00to simulate
50:01being down
50:02unofficial
50:02they need
50:03reps on
50:04that
50:04in the
50:05regular
50:05season
50:05just in
50:06case
50:06something
50:06were to
50:07happen
50:07so
50:07the
50:08second half
50:09referee
50:09will be
50:09Steven
50:10Woods
50:10Clay
50:11Martin
50:12is the
50:12first half
50:13white hat
50:14as they say
50:14there's a runoff
50:18so 45 seconds
50:2110 second runoff
50:22it was a penalty
50:23with the clock
50:24in motion
50:25they opted
50:27to not take
50:28a timeout
50:29the lack
50:31of urgency
50:32continues
50:33so they're
50:40going to put it
50:40at 48
50:40now
50:41so we lost
50:4110 seconds
50:42to pick up
50:43three seconds
50:44that's a net
50:45negative seven
50:46for you keeping
50:47score at home
50:48they have a two
50:49minute situation
50:50those timeouts
50:51are gold
50:51you want to save
50:52them as long
50:52as you can
50:53there's another
50:54false start
50:54I think
50:55on the right
50:55side of the line
50:56looked like
50:57Connor McDermott
50:58the right tackle
50:59now you're going
51:01to use a timeout
51:03was the game
51:06clock rolling
51:07on the signal
51:07yes
51:08number 68
51:09it's a five yard
51:10penalty
51:10second down
51:12Houston will take
51:13a timeout
51:13to avoid
51:14the ten second runoff
51:16these ten seconds
51:17are more important
51:17than the other ten
51:18seconds for D'Amico
51:19Ryan's
51:20here's a message
51:20from Meyer
51:21while you sort
51:21it all out
51:22the good life
51:24shouldn't be
51:25reserved for the few
51:26the finest cuisine
51:28should always
51:30be on the menu
51:31please set the game
51:32clock to 45 seconds
51:34shouldn't just be
51:35for the rich and famous
51:36at Meyer
51:37we believe that
51:38real life
51:38deserves real good
51:40and we work hard
51:41to bring more of it
51:42here quality
51:43meets value
51:44and selection
51:45meets savings
51:46so the good life
51:47is always within reach
51:49we do more
51:50to make life
51:51a good deal better
51:52at Meyer
51:53a little window
51:55into how D'Amico
51:56Ryan sees time
51:57on the clock
51:58right
51:58he didn't want
51:59to take it down
51:59to 35
52:00so he used
52:01the timeout
52:01this time around
52:02game management
52:02is very important
52:03and it still surprises
52:05probably everybody
52:06how often
52:07we still see teams
52:08remember the Chicago
52:09game last year
52:10when they came
52:10to Ford Field
52:11just let the entire
52:12you know
52:12last 35 seconds
52:13wear off
52:14it's like
52:14man
52:16you have to be able
52:17as the coach
52:17to make the right
52:18decisions
52:18D'Amico Ryan's
52:19played that right
52:2010 seconds
52:21that's okay
52:21because we all
52:22we still have
52:22all three timeouts
52:2320 seconds
52:24hey now you're
52:25that's that's just
52:26way too many
52:27you're taking probably
52:27two or three more
52:28plays off the board
52:29so burn one
52:29we still have two
52:30in our back pocket
52:30as we get
52:31another flag
52:33it was down
52:33in the Lions
52:34secondary
52:3540 seconds to go
52:37this first half
52:39so when we
52:41when we lose
52:42a referee
52:43in the second half
52:44is that going to be
52:44less flags
52:46do you think Jason
52:47might be more
52:47could be
52:48because then trying to do
52:49too much
52:49yeah it could be
52:50this will be a great
52:52psychological experiment
52:53can't wait
52:54I know you're thrilled
52:55to engage in
52:56the officials are talking
52:58to D'Amico Ryan
52:59and Dan Campbell
53:00but you're right
53:01I mean that game
53:02at Thanksgiving
53:02I don't know
53:04if ever
53:04I have seen
53:05real time
53:06there is no foul
53:07in the play
53:08Houston
53:08will take another timeout
53:10to avoid the 10 second runoff
53:12required by rule
53:1330 seconds
53:14okay
53:16so there was no foul
53:17but then Houston
53:19second timeout
53:20because
53:20how would there be
53:22a runoff
53:22if there was no penalty
53:24I don't understand it
53:26because the play clock
53:27the game clock
53:28still stops
53:29as they have to
53:29call the penalty
53:30so
53:31I don't know
53:32what the penalty
53:33was going to be
53:34I don't even think
53:34they gave us
53:35an idea
53:36of what it was
53:37a possible penalty
53:37would have been
53:38but if that would have
53:40been on the defense
53:41then you would think
53:43okay the play would stop
53:44yeah
53:44when they picked the flag up
53:46we saw it a lot last week
53:47it's only been one today
53:49so we haven't had to
53:50talk about it too much
53:51but
53:51this is a huge
53:53third down right here
53:54Jason
53:54especially with Houston
53:55getting the ball
53:56out of halftime
53:57if you can find a way
53:58to get a stop
53:58and maybe get this ball
53:59back into your
54:00offense's hands
54:00with around 30 seconds
54:02left
54:02put some points
54:03on the board
54:03this is a giant
54:04third down
54:04they'll flush him
54:06out of the pocket
54:07Lynn got there
54:08to speed up
54:09his timer
54:09there is a marker
54:10in at the 41
54:12we'll check
54:15we'll check
54:15the marker
54:17before the pass
54:22was thrown
54:22holding
54:23defense number 38
54:25five yard penalty
54:27automatic first down
54:28you know you have to be
54:29ready for all the
54:30situations here in
54:31preseason football
54:32and because of last week
54:33we decided that we need
54:34to be a little bit more
54:35flexible
54:36for our own penalty play
54:37you want to
54:38yeah we can do that
54:39when they lose the ref
54:40and you think we can
54:41make it to the field
54:41if we see something
54:42in the second half
54:43yeah I think
54:43certainly safety first
54:45but yeah I think
54:45probably
54:46feel bad for these
54:47people sitting about
54:47ten rows in front of us
54:48I don't think they would
54:49appreciate that too much
54:50a little farther
54:52than it looks Jason
54:53I'm just glad we have
54:55props for preseason
54:56football
54:56it's great
54:57it's a first down
54:59on the holding penalty
55:00and Mertz again
55:01with a short set
55:02and he throws it
55:02over the middle
55:03to the 44
55:04it is Herb Smith Jr.
55:07with 31 seconds
55:09and I believe
55:09a timeout Houston
55:10timeout Houston
55:12their third and final
55:13of the half
55:1430 seconds
55:15Jason talking about
55:17being versatile
55:18and picking up
55:19a heavy workload
55:20oh boy
55:21let's take a look
55:22at what your afternoon
55:23looks like my friend
55:24well it's spending
55:26a portion of it
55:27with you
55:27which is great
55:29and then going
55:30across the street
55:30right across the street
55:31there it is
55:32to America Park
55:33I'm sure a lot
55:33of these fans
55:34are going to be
55:34following you over
55:35are you coming
55:36are you going to make
55:37you want to come
55:37do you want to come
55:38be Andy Nertz
55:39I wish I could
55:40I like it
55:40I'm very excited
55:43and by the way
55:44thanks to the Tigers
55:45for lending me over
55:46here to the Lions
55:47and thanks to the Lions
55:47for having me
55:48and to you
55:49for your hospitality
55:50and this entire crew
55:51to let me go play
55:52two jobs in one
55:54it's great
55:54it's very nice
55:56of everybody
55:56and glad to do
55:58you've been great
55:58oh thanks
55:59Burns finally got hit
56:01and that is
56:02somehow
56:03incomplete
56:05there is a marker
56:07in
56:07Avante Maddox
56:11on the coverage
56:12of Powell
56:13that's like it might
56:14get through to him
56:14offensive over 11
56:15oh they get Powell
56:17offensive interference
56:19jostling with
56:20Avante Maddox
56:21the veteran
56:22just maybe
56:26looked like
56:26a push off
56:28the initial one
56:29to gain separation
56:30then right there
56:31I mean
56:32both guys
56:34were kind of
56:34competing for that
56:35football
56:35we did see at the
56:37beginning of that
56:38replay though
56:38there was an arm
56:39extended
56:40yes
56:40right on the right hip
56:41I think it was
56:42Avante Maddox
56:43it looked like that
56:44probably is when the
56:46ball got
56:46or I'm sorry
56:47when the flag got
56:47thrown
56:48which receivers
56:49you're always taught
56:50that bent arm pressure
56:51if you stiff arm
56:52with a straight arm
56:53they're going to call
56:53that every single time
56:54you know
57:04and
57:06and
57:07you
