00:00that every single time Lynn got around the corner and helped create that sack he flushed him directly into the rest of the rush at Al-Qadim Mohamed but Nate Lynn a couple of good reps to force Mertz elsewhere in the pocket and no better time no better time to get the pass rush going than in a two minute situation getting close up there to midfield nice way to end the first half that's going to be something that Kelvin Shepard is going to keep demanding out of this defensive line rolling into
00:29the second half we have to get in the backfield we have to hit the quarterback we cannot keep letting our defensive back sit back there for five six seconds with man-on-man coverage well done at the tail end of the half Grant Stewart with a great kickoff return to open the game for the Lions and a couple of big hits but the Lions do trail 16 to 7 and our sideline report presented by Henry Ford held with Danny and Dan Campbell coach your defense comes up with a big two minute stop what did you like the most about the resilience there well that that's good to get
00:59off the field I mean really they're almost in field goal range and then we backed them out of there which was awesome you know look there's too many penalties right now that's a big thing for us but man it's encouraging to see what Kyle did at the end of the half with Tesla it's a big throw special teams Grant Stewart big return and then that's a good stop right there so something to build up for some players on the roster bubble this second half is their last shot to make their case what's your message to them yeah really what I started with which is listen man we're not the only ones watching this tape there's 31 other teams man your tape speaks for
01:29itself it always will thanks coach thanks to Dan Campbell with Danny there our halftime report begins now here at Ford Field being the starting quarterback for the Lions is moving out here welcome back to Ford Field for some more preseason action between the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans the final preseason game of the year and this is the first ever kids takeover day here inside Ford Field Audrey McCarty is here joining me today how excited are you for this game I'm so excited
01:59so excited I'm so glad to be here thank you so much for inviting me she can take my job that's for sure all right let's check out some of the fun memories Lions are help young fans create today
02:29such a fun filled day for all of the kiddos getting to participate thanks to Audrey for joining us we'll be back after this
02:46last two weeks for the NFL regular season to open before that week eight by there's some daggers in this schedule yeah I mean even after that it is but yeah sticking with those first seven games starting off obviously back to back NFC North competitions there that's going to set the tone for how this division goes really for the entirety of the season and we hit on it last week as well some tough road games in there at Baltimore
02:51at Cincinnati at Kansas City those are going to be loud environments but as Dan Campbell always says
02:56before that week eight bye there's some daggers in this schedule yeah i mean even after that it
03:01is but yeah sticking with those first seven games starting off obviously back-to-back nfc north
03:06competitions there that's going to set the tone for how this division goes really for the entirety
03:11of the season and we hit on it last week as well some tough road games in there at baltimore at
03:16cincinnati at kansas city those are going to be loud environments but as dan campbell always says
03:20they love going on the road man they love it so this team is going to be ready in a couple weeks
03:24september the 7th against the packers it's coming very quickly second half next
03:30key in the second half for the offense the defense each what would it be offensively you have to be
03:43better on first and second down setting up way too many third downs one for four on third down just
03:47not sustaining enough drives and then defensively got to continue to build the pass rush like what
03:52i saw in the last snap with nate lynn uh alco de muhammad getting in the backfield not enough of
03:56that you got to be able to stop the run defensively and then third down really start to to rush houston's
04:02quarterback and make sure they're not getting comfortable like they were in the first half
04:05graham mertz was great in the first half for the texans little lions out on the field we do it for the
04:10kids taking place it's good to see
04:12for the health amik robertson and danny amik a big revelation was made during training camp you said
04:26you're an offensive player playing defense what does that mean uh you know it's just you know having
04:32different kind of you know different skills right uh most importantly you know my ball skills um
04:38you know this i'm gonna try to emphasize that more you know showing everybody my ball skills even my
04:42return skills you know i was an offensive guy in high school really an athlete but i just
04:47transferred transformed my position when i got to college you know because i you know i couldn't
04:51take those hits coming across the middle i'm surprised you didn't mention your 2 000 yards and
04:55what 24 touchdowns in high school yeah yeah yeah hey i was all around guy you know i try to you
05:01know another game of football wanted to be a different kind of player a guy that was wanted to be on the
05:05field every down and to help my team you know you know i put the work in i was able to be one of the
05:10best you know for my area you told us this is the smartest you felt around the game of football in
05:15this season what's changed for you say it again one more time you said that this was the smartest you
05:20felt around the game what's changed for you this season i think just really dial dialing into you
05:25know my film study right and everything you know as far as working on my weaknesses um even when i
05:30wasn't out there you know still penitent to the game you know and the game has slowing down you
05:35know um like i said before trying to fix those mistakes that i made and attack my strengths right
05:41and i think now you know when i'm out there and being able to play corner and nickel the game has
05:46slowed down a lot for me you know so i had some time at the raiders so you know started off so for
05:50me but i used that time when i wasn't playing to watch tape and like i said before work on my
05:55weaknesses and you know it's you know i see it's paying off we can see it i mean thank you very
05:59much amik robertson thank you to him as we are underway half number two from here at ford field and
06:09the texans will have it first jordan on the return finds his way to the 29 yard line and tj will see
06:16keaton slovis coming to play quarterback for the texans the well-traveled usc trojan pit panther
06:25byu cougar in a texans jersey but graham mertz is 14 for 16 in that first half you want to see
06:33more of a pass rush you said yeah and you have to be able to stop the run on first and second down
06:37just too many opportunities in the first half for texans to run that play action pass and really
06:42start to mess with the eyes of the linebackers and the safety so first and second down if you're
06:46able to stop the run force the third and longs make the texans one-dimensional here in the second
06:51half start to get home maybe give yourself some opportunities take the ball away as well
06:54slovis play action there goes lynn around the corner again boy nate lynn has sped up the timer
07:00of both mertz and slovis on the past couple of plays dating back to the first half well i imagine
07:06uh halftime speech you don't have a ton of time there a couple minutes to get in there and you know
07:10take care of business talk about some adjustments you want to make but i can guarantee you if i was
07:15if i was in that locker room it'd be guys we got to get to the quarterback we had one really hit and it
07:19was the last play great job closing out that two-minute drill in the first half but
07:23not good enough we need to be more consistent in getting into the backfield and rattling the
07:28quarterback and try like i said trying to get some of those takeaway opportunities
07:30lynn again in pursuit didn't get there jordan to the 39 lauren strickland with the hit the
07:38best halftime speech of your career was what
07:41wow it's got to be the super bowl charles woodson went down early in the game with a broken collarbone
07:48and you know stayed with the guys and i don't know our fans don't want to hear it but charles woodson's
07:54beloved everywhere it goes especially in this town and you know just very passionate speech
07:58you could tell how much it hurt him to have to miss the second half of that super bowl and
08:01you know getting the guys fired up ready to go that was uh i don't remember verbatim what
08:06he said but you just remember the way you felt and big reason big part of the reason why
08:11the why that team ended up winning by the way our new referee in the second half the ball will be
08:17played steven wood 29 yard line first down in case you missed it in the first half the officials
08:23are simulated wait scratch that he said it is a first time okay you never want to hear scratch
08:30that yeah never mind they're simulating being down a man on the crew which has happened yeah you've
08:36seen guys get injured sometimes and normally get into playoff games i think you might have some
08:41backups on the sideline that you need it but a lot of regular season games guy gets rolled up on the
08:46sideline or run over in the middle of the field it can happen so don't mind the nfl trying to get
08:51these guys some work by the way the way you said you felt when you listen to charles woodson talk
08:55that's how i feel when chris spielman talks he's planning to join us coming up after the next break
09:01so can't wait if i get teary-eyed my flummer broadcast partner from the espn days you'll know why
09:07you two can take it if you want to i can step out no no no you guys need a moment you're earning
09:12your keep today lang second down and one for the texans jordan has run it very well in this opening
09:21drive of the third quarter behind keaton slovis
09:28everybody up in the box and a handoff for jordan right into the pile what is the uh just for folks
09:35who haven't heard you talk about it what's the pile like on a play like that when it's second and one
09:40and there's 20 guys within two yards of each other it's violent yes it's violent you want to try to
09:47try to lock up your guys just look how many guys are in the middle of this pile i mean it's hard to
09:52get movement you just had to try to sustain and then last second try to feel where the running
09:56backs out so you don't get rolled up on that's the one thing i think you fear anytime you have a short
10:01yardage play a goal line play is there's going to be guys flying all over the place so i got to get low
10:05i got to get my pads down i got to keep my feet moving because if i get stood up and and i get caught
10:10in the wrong position there's going to be a lot of guys flying in from every different direction
10:14false star offense number 42 five yard number
10:18your main first down
10:19you know asking you shall receive here is lions legend chris spielman joining us hi chris
10:29hey jace how are you man tremendous how are you i'm great i think it's coming down to the end of the
10:35preseason we're getting ready to finalize the roster and getting ready to open up against green
10:39bay divisional opponent on the road it's a great opportunity how do you watch preseason games with
10:44with how much football you've seen over the course of time you don't look at scheme as much as you
10:49great individuals and i think for me personally i i root for all the guys because i know these guys
10:55are living out their lifetime dream and they have a great opportunity so i want them all to do well
11:00unfortunately you can't keep them all but remember they're not only auditioning for us
11:05they're auditioning for 31 other teams and i know that you make relationships with the players as
11:10well it's a big part of why everybody loves you but is it bitter this time time of the year
11:15bittersweet for you as well where you just mentioned you've gotten to know a lot of these guys for the
11:19past four or five months and unfortunately you're going to have to have some hard conversations with
11:23some of the guys but the sweet part is man we're gearing up like for the regular season it's got to be
11:27exciting but at the same time yeah i mean i think everybody understands the world that we live in
11:33and that's the reality of the business and i think the only thing you can ask for a guy or a player
11:38can ask himself did he do his absolute very best and give it his best shot and he answers yes that's all
11:44what you can do to try to support the guy as much as you can
11:47it's an injured party for the lions it's ezekiel turner yeah
11:53so we will step aside we have a special announcement from you with you chris when we come back
12:01that i think people are going to want to hear 16 to 7 with turner down
12:05imagine this a day filled you've done a tremendous amount of work not only off the field but your
12:13work on the field speaks for itself we love the legacy that's being created here
12:17and it's great to have you join us in the pride of the lions you are being inducted on september 14th
12:26and we're looking forward to you man so yeah well well deserved
12:30that is big news the 22nd member of the pride of the lions robert porche
12:38just announced as powell makes the catch there chris how cool was that to tell robert and be there
12:45for that well you know i think you learn to over time appreciate your teammates you played with and
12:50you look at robert and say the player was a model of consistency the thing that i always admired about
12:55him and tj understands because he's probably played against guys the versatility that he had he could
13:00play the nose he can play the one tech the three tech the five tech the six tech seven eight nine
13:04tech which made him so good and he played with great effort and he cared i mean he deeply cared
13:09about where he and it was an honor to play with him i'm really happy for robert he deserves this
13:14and and how it had to make your job easier playing with guys like robert and you mentioned luther ellis
13:20and pritchard being a linebacker keeping those guys off you up front i know that was one thing with
13:25with robert that he excelled that as well well do pritchard and you know i played with a lot of
13:29good guy jerry ball for example when everybody knows jerry mark spindler danny owens and i've always
13:35said this tj and you probably know this you're only as good as the people in front of you as a linebacker
13:41i only made tackles when guys would eat up space i played the only reason why i was able to to play or as
13:48long as i did and be productive i had some ability but i also had guys in front of me that were great players like
13:53robert borsche see right there getting a sack yeah he wasn't gonna let go of sean king there by the
13:59way you know no his his his thing was his effort man and you know effort is the great equalizer not
14:07only was he supremely talented but when you match that with effort you end up with the blue jacket
14:11for the pride of the lions so it's really cool and you're in great shape too robert porsche is
14:16still jacked every time i see the guy i think he still has a couple of snaps left in him confuse me
14:21and jason bonetti please don't ever do that to yourself see when people say you look like you
14:26can still play that's a compliment as a linebacker it's not lots of linemen that's just another way of
14:31saying yeah you're so pretty big huh this is this is goldilocks here it's like too big too small just
14:37right in the middle robert porsche as a person like for people who've never met him don't know him as a
14:45guy what what was he like so i think it robert understands that he's been given a gift and putting
14:52in a spotlight and with that spotlight he's recognized recognized that there comes a responsibility to give
14:58back and he's certainly done that within the communities that he lives in second and goal and we have a flag
15:07look you did this for a long time first as an analyst will you will you just for old time
15:12sake to say let's hear on second of yours all right let's see second and what do we have second
15:19in uh second goal second and 16 yep so what i want to do here just keep the ball in front of me
15:25get it in the third seven or eight give them a check down if you have to stop the run most
15:30offenses are successful in the red zone when they run the football that's how you determine a good
15:35offensive red zone so here we go we have a telestrator too if you want to draw something you're welcome
15:39to bart fox loves when people draw on live action second and goal
15:46quick set it's powell on the wide receiver screen they do get to about that seven chris and
15:55there's a marker down yeah and usually those wide receiver screens we did a good job with our corner
16:01turning the ball back in because 10 other guys are coming from the inside out the problem is
16:06offense number 15. you like how i shut up there on the flag that's nice good technique
16:14let me show you the preview here right here is you're going to have a corner coming out here his
16:19job is to turn the ball in because all our guys are being coming from this way in pursuit now and for
16:24those things for i got you somebody clear it for those things i'm out of practice for five years give me a break
16:32for the defensive line usually will create turnovers that that's the time to create turnovers because
16:39you're tackling a guy from behind that was next level telestration there i they haven't let me do
16:44that that's a lot well they haven't taken away from me but they let you tell straight on radio
16:50nice the arrows the lines there you go yeah nice read great read there
16:55trevor nawaski blew that thing up
16:58chris you gotta love that well here's the trevor's done a really good job i think his growth has come
17:05from playing off the ball now he's playing off the ball and trevor nawaski is going to have him man to
17:10man and uh watching me'll hug up he slips the blockers and he's able to break up the pass now trevor
17:19what he brings down not only his special teams value but he also can play on the ball as a sam linebacker
17:26or off the ball and the more you can do the better chance you have the better chance you have a
17:32stand and here's trevor right there you got him i got you j and the biggest difference between playing
17:37that sam maybe on the ball linebacker to playing now off the ball is i'll tell you here after i see
17:43this play there's good joe nice oh man what tackle lauren strickland with an absolute bone crusher i'm
17:53going to get to the biggest difference but i want to talk about yeah that's what we're talking about
17:56it's all fundamentals here here's the rules of tackling it's one step and wrap two steps to squeeze
18:03bring your feet eyes up head up wrap up run through your target not to your target watch him bring his feet
18:09look at his feet run through the target that's beautiful big thing about uh off the line happens
18:15a lot faster on the line that happens a lot slower for linebackers there you go here we go
18:21fairbairn to kick it oh a tough exchange again and this one goes sailing wide
18:28is no good no good the beautiful thing about football you can play with violence
18:42and this is the violence you want one step to wrap two steps to squeeze come with bad
18:46tensions bring your feet run through your target not to your target all right hutch we'll see you do
18:51that in a couple weeks chris you're the best thank you this lions preseason tv broadcast is presented by
19:04meyer and brought to you by cure auto insurance
19:11well tell us greater tom is gone chris spielman so fantastic to see him and just watch him in his
19:18element he's a honestly football is a better game when he's drawing stuff and talking about him he's
19:24phenomenal yeah he is i'm kind of intimidated right now i feel like i just lost my job no no no that was
19:29like telestrator level 20. i'm still at one yeah my circles he just beat the final boss hendon hooker
19:37dropping back stepping up there is a marker down he's on target for ronnie bell into texans territory but that
19:44will likely not stand
19:48that was like zach johnson 77 holding yeah offense number 77 10-yard penalty draw yeah and he's just
19:56going to get edged a little bit right he's got a one-on-one block here with this defensive tackle
20:01play action pass see how he misses with that left left hand jason then it just gets up around the
20:05shoulder pad you're going to get called for that every single time you have to be able to try to re
20:09redirect that hand a lot of times you're not going to hit that defensive lineman with your initial
20:14punch because if you ever go to practice and you watch offensive lineman just punch punch punch
20:18well guess what the defensive linemen are doing swipe swipe swipe so you're not always going to
20:24get that initial contact where you want it to be you have to be able to redirect that
20:28hand back underneath and find that shoulder pad
20:32there's a hand off and it is sailors all right i'm going to take my life in my own hands here
20:37show me how you're going to redirect do we need okay do we need
20:40yeah do we need a waiver for okay okay i signed it zach's hands are outside here right yep you have
20:45to find a way to keep your feet moving but then to circle it's a circle underneath it's circle you
20:49can't you can't go this way because their arms are right there so you have to try to find a way to
20:52circle back underneath get on that chest plate anytime you get caught out here for an extended
20:56period of time yep that's all the referees that's what officials see you end up up here right and
21:00you're restricting and now your feet are going to get beat your feet are going to be in a bad position
21:03if you have bad hands but you can still keep your feet in front of the defender you are probably
21:09going to get away with it most of the time but when your feet are out of place and when your hands
21:12are out of place that's when you're going to get called for the hold sailors on the run see we both
21:15survive that i didn't hurt you you got a long day ahead of you i don't want to multiple attorneys
21:22were on line one iowa so the late great bill walton i did some games at his house in san diego that the
21:28nba had us do together and we did a skit where he was blocking my shot and there were four or five
21:36people that were terrified that it was going to be the absolute end of me why would you ever agree to
21:41that well i'm a glutton for punishment and he's the absolute third down for hendon hooker
21:49little shovel pass got it away for sailors who is hit from behind he's down at the 29
21:56by dylan horton the third year man out of tcu
22:03looks like a free rusher that time you're going to get the classic double-a mug and sometimes that
22:08means hey the right tackle i've got to now squeeze in and block the three technique
22:12houston did a nice nice job of kind of baiting that protection they dropped everybody out hendon
22:17really didn't have an opportunity to look downfield too long because he had that free rusher coming to
22:21his right but i like the decision and that's what coach talked about yesterday is we just want to see
22:25him play clean just make the right decisions don't try to do too much and run around and scramble
22:30keep your eyes downfield and just go play football i think he's doing a much better job of doing that today
22:34jordan back to receive with his heels at the 10 and he gets dumped at the 20 yard line
22:44dominic lovett went down to make the stop dan campbell and the lions defense back on the field next
22:54three percent back on every purchase in stadium when you scan your lions perks card presented by delta
23:00the lions first card is free and accessible to anyone with the detroit lions app
23:09wonder if that's a hearty soup or if it's a
23:12broth based on that sign i don't know well what do you prefer
23:17we're asking first down katie slovis snaps it off he's got it to luke lachey the tight end out of
23:23iowa the rookie's seventh round pick dj miller knocked him down a couple of nice tackles form
23:29tackles from the lions here in the second half yeah haven't seen a lot of missed tackles really
23:33throughout the preseason i've seen some guys maybe take wrong angles at times but uh that's a
23:39must that is a requirement if you were going to play for kelvin shepherd and and this defense and
23:44dan campbell i mean he preaches it too you have to do the fundamentals we've got a great breakdown from
23:49chris spielman a couple drives ago about what it looks like to you know fire shoot at the guy
23:55go wrap up finish drive to the ground lions defense as a whole has really been doing a nice job
24:00pressure from the secondary forced a high throw and powell tripped up lauren strickland got a hand on
24:07him to make sure he was down it's third down but a little creativity from kelvin shepherd there yeah
24:13we almost jinxed it and that's just a simple rpo from houston they see the blitz off the right side
24:18throw the little quick quick stop route and lauren strickland does just enough to bring down the tag
24:23bring down the ball carrier that's a huge stop because if you miss that there is a ton of green
24:28grass out there lauren strickland did a nice job of keeping this the third down instead of an explosive play
24:38slovis got it to cephas quintez cephas gets cleaned out by strickland
24:44to short a midfield it's a first down for houston you know we've talked about rock you see and we've
24:49talked about some other guys playing multiple positions here in the preseason and dan campbell
24:56loves versatility loves to have it on the roster with whoever ends up making this roster you can
25:01imagine it's going to be a major factor and tj i know in your experience playing football you've been
25:08a really versatile player as well you know people thinking of you as an offensive lineman but like
25:14you you i asked you about that two yard gain earlier because look you've played defensive line
25:19that's a good point and you've been curious to see what we're oh of course but we don't have the
25:24footage of you being really good at it you could have picked any other of the nine plays and nothing
25:29like getting circled out on national tv by the way playing out of position there by my buddy chris
25:35collinsworth in front of millions of people i can't tell if you can circle i don't know if you can
25:39tell this is a 15-year uh wound that you just reopened for me but it was you know it's hey it's
25:45about being being versatile and being coachable jason you have to be able to do whatever the coaches
25:50ask if you fill in a little bit find a spot no i think that tackle wasn't my home but and honestly
25:55you and uh you and spielman did such a great job let's see it there you go right there that's one
26:01person that's two that's here we go four people worth of nothing and i haven't forgiven john
26:09sullivan for this either yeah i mean i got tripped right that's when you go back to the sideline it's
26:14like i would have had it coach i got tripped i kind of want to circle it again if we could show it
26:18again it might have been boy this is fun i love the telestrator here might have been my last play
26:23at defensive tackle by the way was it your last play actually that now that i think about it i think it
26:28was was it actually it was only for two games probably about 10 or 12 plays on short yardage
26:35thanks for ripping that scab off for me yeah we do our best third down and two it's a throw for a
26:40first down it is luke lachey the rookie out of iowa yeah let's just i'll keep having fun well why don't
26:46you just break it down like what happened here though like why was this not let's circle well look i mean
26:51i'm on the back side they're clear they're gonna run power to the left yeah i get back blocked i try to
26:56swim move right there and then you could clearly see me trip so me one-on-one in the hole with adrian
27:01peterson i probably would have liked my chance yeah i think my eyes just got a little bit too big for
27:05my britches and you know got wiped out the plate and once again like i said got circled on sunday
27:10night football and exposed in front of millions of people so hey yeah not bitter about it at all no
27:15no no you seem like you're not jacob johnson on the catch he gets cut down at the 29 to be clear
27:21to be clear you did share the that's true like there was a uh well i i didn't share that play
27:28you know necessarily i think the conversation was i've played seven positions in an nfl game all
27:35five linemen spots tight end and then actually i played a couple defensive spots as well
27:39and it was like how did it go and i said actually it went pretty well
27:43and then somebody was like well i do remember that one i'm like of course i almost had a pressure
27:48one time against miami with a nice little spin move on a pass rush but we didn't have that's the
27:53one that everybody remember yeah of course we didn't have that one nice stop there but yes it
27:57was a serious conversation especially if you're a depth player yes you cannot specialize as at one
28:04spot no you joke around but like that's important it is important and whether you're in the secondary
28:10being able to play safety bump into the nickel spot go play outside corner uh whether you're on the
28:16offensive line you can't just be a left tackle right we might need you on right tackle we might
28:20need you at left guard so that flexibility and versatility is important it's a third down and one
28:25lynn on the tackle to get the stop on second down everybody up at the line brooks is the tailback
28:31third and one they'll hand it to him he runs right into the pile and brooks drives his legs to pick up the
28:38first down and that's just old school football right there everybody in this building knew exactly what
28:48the texans were going to do and fullback leading up in the way stalemate at the line of scrimmage they just
28:55texans find a way to sneak out that extra inch or two to pick up the first down that play we showed of
29:02yours is the perfect example of what's important to nfl teams at the tail end of a roster though the
29:07want to the hey if you need me i can do this and the lions needed that more than just about any team
29:14in the nfl last year you learn a lot about your depth in the preseason and then sometimes in the
29:19regular season one quarter of the preseason left next with the litter robot that is the end i can't
29:27smell your litter right lions preseason game broadcast is presented by meyer the silent report
29:33is presented by henry ford health and i'm joined now by jameson williams there aren't very many days
29:38in training camp that we don't see you going for a 50-yard dime from jared golf how excited are you to
29:44get into this playbook once week one comes um i'm really excited you know um it's just football it's
29:50just ball it's something i love to do and me and my quarterback and all the other guys we've been
29:54connecting well through camp so you know we're looking forward to week one um we got to go away
29:58so we just hopefully hopefully we get a win how is johnny more in your new oc bringing out the best
30:04in you uh you know he always pushes for the best um he's been around a lot of guys he's been coaching
30:08for a long time and you know he just want the best for us um if we mess up on something you know we
30:13got to redo it two or three times just to get it right and perfect it um he's coming over with some
30:18great play calls he's still trusting his players and he's letting his players handle everything so you
30:22know i love him man he's just got the got got the good things ahead for us you were on his radar all
30:28the way dating back to spring he's like jmo is something else right now where have you grown the
30:33most whether it's physically or mentally i think it's mentally all mentally um the physical part of
30:39the game and playing football you know it kind of comes easy with me just being athletic and things
30:43so you know you got to go to the mental part of sometimes and just make sure everything is there
30:48and put put both together and once you put both together you can become unstoppable so i've been
30:52working on my mental a lot you know just staying calm and you know going next play mentality a lot
30:57and that's that's the main thing next play mentality you might have a drop and you might the ball might
31:01come back to you next place so you can't be focused on that drop gotta be focused on the next play what's
31:06the next play you might got a block for a brother you might got to have a touchdown block you might
31:10just got to do anything for the team to score so or win so you know my main thing been mental uh next
31:16play mentality moving on with things jmo thank you
31:22tyson russell the interception danny had spoken to jameson williams moments ago and that is a big
31:29takeaway for the defense but you love to hear jameson williams talk about the big pictures that's an
31:34interception hendon hooker has it picked off by jalen mills the 10th year man out of lsu is right to him
31:42and that is a rough giveaway yeah especially when you just got the momentum back houston was driving
31:52down in the red zone you get a massive takeaway and then one play later give it back and that ball just
31:58sailed on on hendon it was going to get a little pressure that see that blitz and linebacker 46
32:04probably made hendon throw it a little bit faster you can tell loved it wasn't even out of his break yet
32:07but i think even you know if you had more time that probably wasn't the right guy to throw to
32:13if you're hendon hooker that's where you'd like to see maybe use your legs to get out of the pocket
32:17maybe just throw the ball away right anytime you have underneath coverage on a crossing route with
32:22the safety over the top that is a very very dangerous throw in this league after the play
32:27that can just launched it unsportsmanlike texas 15-yard penalty first down texas
32:39he's not used to where he's doing his best he was trying to steven woods so
32:46we'll step aside but we're going to find out some trivia about the texas okay after this you're
32:50ready interesting gear up for game day at lions supply the official retail store of the detroit lions
33:03located inside port field and accessible through gate a or gate g lions supply is open monday through
33:08friday 10 a.m to 4 p.m and on saturdays before lions home game all right so we heard the second
33:16half referee stephen woods mentioned that the penalty was on the texans or texas texas that team
33:23that the other team after the play we'll tell you about their name keaton slovis to throw got it to
33:32the sideline and the feet are in for cephas it's a first down so the texans had five finalists as the
33:38story goes for their name when they chose okay the other four has a story on nfl.com had apollos
33:46bobcats stallions and wildcatters yeah i think they picked the right one you think so i mean bobcats
33:54isn't terrible wildcatters wildcatters yeah that sounds like a double-a baseball team i don't think that one
34:01would have went over too well texans keep it simple yeah yeah apollos you know what about the houston
34:07houston's i mean we'd have a problem be a little too simple it's jordan to the outside and he
34:15leans for the pylon i don't think he got in russell with the hit as jordan was right around the one
34:23and he gets close reaches out watch that right leg come down right knees down yep just about a yard
34:33short my hands are starting to lose a little bit too much of that edge on the back side of some of
34:39these runs texans are doing a nice job of cutting it back and gotta be disciplined in your gap
34:44integrity right if i'm supposed to have the outside the most outside gap i gotta stay there even if the
34:49play looks like it's going away from the original you gotta trust that your teammates are going to be
34:53there to make the play for you first and gold jordan into the pile and he is swarmed under he's
34:59going to lose maybe two as the interior of the line there's keith cooper jr crawling from the bottom of
35:06the pile a young man by the way who went to arian fosters camps as a kid down in houston playing against
35:13the texas and just look at the get off from the defensive line you can say they're two yards in the
35:17backfield anytime you can get that type of penetration you're not going to allow that fullback to
35:21get to his assignment which is normally one of the middle linebackers you just throw everything in
35:25a jumble and then you try to find a way to get off the block and make a play really good rep from the
35:29entire defensive line that time roll out and throw for slovis it is a touchdown for daniel jackson the
35:37rookie out of minnesota with the texans touchdown
35:43and you a lot of that is awareness jason i try to tell young guys all the time if you if you're
35:49down on the goal line at the one yard line and you they try the other team tries to run the ball
35:52and you stop them for a two yard loss that a lot of offensive coordinators are not going to go right
35:58back to a run play they're going to try to mess with your eyes and go to a play action a bootleg a
36:02rollout of some sort because offensive coordinators are very they get spooked by negative plays hey we
36:07just ran the ball we lost two yards do you guys really think i'm going to trust you to call another run
36:12no i'm going to try to call play action and a lot of times it works because you are taught down
36:17inside that five yard line you know we've got to stop the run got to stop the run got to stop the
36:21run that's just one of those awareness plays for young players we just stop the run now my antenna's
36:26got to go up i have a feeling that the pass is going to come good play call from houston better execution
36:33imagine this a day pre-season tv broadcast is presented by meyer
36:39and brought to you by cure auto insurance and by jack daniel there it is
36:48got a little smoke here for the last one i don't even know who that is
36:53classic voiceover contact there i know you i know you're an impression guy too and by
36:59the line
37:04texans scored most recently a daniel jackson touchdown to make it 23 to 7 and the lions would
37:10love to have a little momentum for the offense last pre-season game two weeks before the opener
37:15and hendon hooker specifically trying to bounce back from that interception on his last pass kennedy
37:21to the fringe across the 25 he's out of bounds at the 28 and that's where the lions will set up shot
37:26and hendon hooker has to have a short memory here i thought really the most of the reps he's taken
37:31before that last interception have been what the coaches are looking for stay on timing stay uh you
37:36know let's see some accuracy let's see some poise stay in the pocket try to be show us what you can
37:40do with your arm right at the atlanta game miami game just saying too much like hang in the pocket
37:46right keep your eyes downfield i think he's done a nice job of doing that obviously the last play he had
37:51was not a good one but if you're hendon hooker there's still a lot of football game there's still
37:54almost 13 minutes to go you got to find a way to be have a short memory and get back to playing some
37:59some positive football see jackson meets there with a block on that run for dion jackson downstairs
38:05to danny on jackson meets yeah the undrafted rookie is seriously eyeing a roster spot here
38:10in detroit and this has been a moment he's been preparing for long before he signed with detroit dating
38:15back to his high school spring breaks you know who he would go up and spend a week with it was his
38:21nfl defensive end uncle zadarius smith he was uncle z's little shadow they ate the same diet
38:27did the same nfl training meek told me he's okay if he never gets to play with his uncle right now
38:32he's just focused on being confident and trying to make this roster great pedigree hendon hooker
38:37flashing the speed that is the tantalizing part of the game for hendon hooker just carving the middle of
38:44the field of a run of 25 and just finding something out of nothing a lot of press up there in the
38:50middle of that pocket hendon does a nice job of keeping his legs alive only thing i'd like to see
38:55different jason is just slide right there's no it's not necessary to take three shots from the defenders
39:00there you did a great job of getting out of the pocket picking up the first down don't don't put
39:04yourself at risk to getting injured but i like the athleticism i see there that that looked like a
39:09football player there's nothing there everything's crashing down on me do i just take the sack
39:14stay alive right improvise try to find a way to make something happen when everything when nothing
39:18is there it was also a decisive choice i mean it was the most self-assured decision we've seen from
39:24him in the preseason just watching him physically right foot the ground go and escapability it looked
39:30like you know from our level here there was absolutely nowhere to go with a couple guys bearing right
39:36down right through the middle of that offensive line and if you're going to be a second quarterback
39:42in this league you have to bring something different to the table a lot of these guys
39:46do have some elusiveness they do have some speed where you know this play only works against you know
39:52cover three you know and then you get cover two and it's like oh man they got the perfect defense
39:56called how can i still find a way to make it work though that's how that's what you have to do
40:00to get the organization confidence that you can go in there and just give everybody hope that you can
40:05in belief that you can go out there and compete you don't get to choose when your starting
40:11quarterback goes out back up you look number two quarterbacks are like folk heroes in a lot of towns
40:17they're probably the one athlete i would say in a major sport that fans love but hope to never watch
40:22play right right because that means obviously something happened to your number one yeah but hendon is
40:29even there just a little quick movement that ball hits around yeah that should be incomplete they will
40:36blow it dead i mean it's like going to watch a movie about people singing and instead of anna kendrick
40:41you get an offensive lineman oh more jabs huh yeah yeah i mean that's not really a jab i guess it's
40:48true but yes that ball did hit the ground yeah even the quick little step to the right though from
40:54hendon to you know kind of get out of that pressure keep his eyes downfield wasn't the best the great
41:00throw but overall keeping that play alive when there again there was nothing there kick keeps the ball in
41:06your hand and gives you an opportunity here on this fourth down to try to look downfield and you know you
41:10got what at least nine yards to go got to get to the 37 hendon hooker on fourth down over the middle
41:20and that is going to be that for this lions drive he wanted to love it we talked about how deep the
41:26receiver room is love it an interesting prospect the rookie out of georgia couldn't reel that in and
41:32the texans will take over next
41:38what up one pride like that rory i know you're gearing up for the season man port field is always
41:43a fun time what do you want to learn you
41:45okay i got you yeah i think i got it that's good you're a great interpreter for rory i agree tj
41:54fantastic interpreter here's a throw down the middle and the texans with powell to the 46.
42:00let me do a little uh little what do you want to see a little play of offensive lineman okay well
42:04we'll just do a simple one rory where and i'm gonna teach i'll expect you to learn this too i know
42:08you're a quick learner anytime we already kind of did it jason but our hands get outside
42:13the defensive lineman's hands are inside oh no i'm getting pushed back what do you gotta do jason
42:17uh you gotta hold him you gotta circle you gotta circle get back on the chest plate rory you got
42:22that you think you got it no you don't think okay all right well let's see if we can do it again
42:27we got to do it again then it's a fourth uh second and one run to the 45 and a first down
42:33all right try again okay rory well it's rory's turn now okay you're the offensive lineman you're
42:37blocking oh no i'm getting pushed over i'm getting oh look at that he's got some power to him i like it
42:44he's a much quicker learner than you are jason i tell you that that's not hard to do
42:49uh good to see rory fantastic i rory wants a hug rory oh boy you want to call the play i lost my headset
43:00rory you taught rory so well he did he just he's locked he said he's not a big fan of you though
43:07jason no that's what you spent too much time with paws across the street is that the problem yes it's
43:11a first down run and it is brooks to the outside let's get rory on one more time so i can say hello
43:17real fast rory wanted a hug so say hi to pause for me we'll see you soon all right rory great to meet
43:26you my pleasure rory ladies and gentlemen that's the best headset placement we've ever had on a telecast
43:35i mean tj maybe if you were a little more right on the nose i'll tell you his head's not that much
43:40bigger than mine i like it stretching this thing out for sure second down and five coming up for
43:50the texans thanks to rory for popping by you know what i like the camaraderie of the mascots in the
43:57city do you think they have like each other like a society where they hang out i think they have darts
44:02tournaments though they have to do something where they can't talk though because that's right charades
44:08yeah but how are you gonna guess well i guess he's got his chalkboard that's good point
44:15third down here lions trying to get it back ball at the 39
44:24keaton slovis desert mountain high school in arizona
44:32we'll hand it off for brooks right up the gun he's got a first down
44:37across the 30-yard line ford's tailgate sweepstakes running all season long and giving lions fans the
44:43chance to drive home the grand prize a lions raft 2025 ford vehicle sweepstakes open until january 31st 2026
44:51must be 18 years or older to enter no purchase necessary head to lionsfordtailgate.com to enter today
44:58pre-season's almost over this happened fast by the way we're halfway through quarter number four
45:05some long drives today for the houston texans
45:09brooks the tailback fake it there here comes lynn got into slovis's face and sped up his timer again
45:16tell you what second half nate lynn has played very well and it really started with the last play of the first
45:22half sometimes it takes you you know a couple reps a couple series to kind of get in that rhythm feel
45:26out what the offense is doing feel out what the offensive lineman across from you is doing maybe
45:31try to pick up some tips and then you gather information every time they motion you know it's
45:35one of these i can the best defensive lineman one of the underrated skills that they can have is reading
45:40the offensive lineman stance if i can tell if he's going to his right if he's going to his left if he's
45:45maybe sitting back a little bit and going into a pass set that automatically changes what
45:49you want to do and then you gather that information and if you can uh execute it at a very fast pace
45:55because you only might have a split second to do that uh that's where it makes a difference so then
46:00some of it's not surprising to see some defensive linemen sometimes start to come on as the game goes
46:04on because they've gathered all that information and now they're starting to use uh use all the
46:09all the little tips and keys that they have read for 25 30 plays to their advantage that's wayne
46:14state's anthony pitman on the tackle after this play i want to ask you about some of those keys that
46:19you're looking for and how you read tips from a lineman the first third down and 12 we're under
46:24seven minutes to go quarter number four call it officially third and 13. slovis off his back foot
46:32going for the end zone and incomplete he wanted cephas with white side trailing him and fourth down coming
46:38up but if you're a defensive lineman what keys are you reading like where do those tips come from from an
46:44offensive line well you try i think the first thing is you look at the balance is he really
46:49leaning forward like he's going to fire off the ball is he kind of leaning back a little bit you
46:53look at the foot what the stance the actual feet if one foot is behind the other one you know if i'm
46:58playing right tackle it might just think of your right foot being staggered about six inches behind
47:03your left foot okay maybe he does that when he's going to his right and then when he goes to his left
47:06maybe they're a little bit more balanced because it's tough when you have that big stagger to open up that
47:10inside hip and go the opposite direction uh some of the best defensive linemen that i ever played
47:16knew that they would watch my stance and be like all right run this way run then how okay how can i
47:20use it against them i'm pretending it's a run this way but it's really a play action and you know what
47:24i got you buddy 26-7
47:3326-7 here in the fourth quarter 6 35 to go
47:37stay tuned for the cure auto insurance post game show for highlights analysis and interviews with
47:43your detroit lions isaac tesla has the lone touchdown for the lions this afternoon tj like
47:50just continues to take steps right and i know that he's got a lot of development and still a lot of
47:55learning uh to do as we approach the regular season but it's hard not to be excited about uh the
48:02potential that you see isaac tesla having not only in this league but on this offense and just the
48:08different areas where you could start to use him and you know what i love is after his touchdown catch
48:13the very next kickoff he's out there yeah like good job buddy okay now go cover but go block somebody
48:20go do this you know be versatile talking to dave phipp about that last week i thought it was a fascinating
48:25meeting we had with him because of the way the kickoff is now and how important a non-touchback
48:31is and how much you're going to want more coverage involved you're going to see more skill players
48:37right not just special teamers for special teams sake you're going to see teams around the league
48:42use more of their higher end talent on special teams because of the value of that yard yeah you need
48:48athletes out there on all four core special teams punt punt return kickoff kick return you need guys out
48:53there that you know can chase somebody down if they have to but can also play physical a nice throw
48:58from hitting hook over the middle to ronnie bell who's got the first down the former wolverine danny
49:04yeah michigan fans know ronnie bell's name very well and bell peeled back the curtain a little bit
49:09back for me in terms of roster cut down day he says we don't talk about it with each other it's on no
49:15one's mind because you know what we are trying to make this roster bell's mindset is climbing the mountain
49:21of one of the deepest wide receivers rooms that dan campbell has had since he's been here bell says
49:26he's proud of what he's done this training camp that he's played his best ball in his life and he
49:31loves being back in michigan a really familiar place yeah with his time at the 49ers certainly he
49:37went to high school in kansas city but he became a star at michigan as jackson lost his shoe by the way
49:43who throws a shoe but this wide receiver room is so deep there are a lot of choices to be made here
49:50there are and you're going to have to start deciding you know do we want to go heavy on receivers
49:54because all of these guys can play and maybe we go lighter some at another position those are going to
49:59be difficult conversations that the brad holmes and dan campbell are going to have to have over the
50:03next couple days but you know what you wouldn't rather have it any other way you want to have tough
50:07decisions you want to say we've got a ton of dudes man and we've got great options and really no matter who
50:13who we go with we feel like we're at a great spot i know that they feel that way with that wide
50:17receiver room right now certainly there was a free runner in amalette and there is a 10 yard sack
50:23on the board but a marker down as well
50:28here's stephen woods
50:31illegal formation
50:34number 10 that penalties decline second down
50:39it was on ronnie bell who the look on his face like what
50:43what i do yeah and that whole play just looked like it was off i mean anytime you have a free
50:48runner that fast in the backfield lets me know jason that the guys up front weren't all on the same
50:55page maybe they heard a different protection maybe they heard a different call at the line of
50:58scrimmage but you can't have a free runner that fast going right at your quarterback that's the
51:01communication dan campbell talked about ronnie bell on the receiver screen to the 32 so how do you fix
51:07that like what is the fix i know you don't know exactly what happened because you're not down there
51:13what tends to be the fix well that's difficult from a coaching perspective because coach told us
51:17yesterday these guys will come to the sideline and ah you know well you cover for your buddies you know
51:22you don't want to say like i told him what to do and he didn't do it like oh maybe i
51:26maybe i wasn't loud enough or maybe the word i was trying to get out sounded like something else like
51:30you can understand that it's just you have to have the trust uh in your buddies you have to have to
51:35trust in the quarterback to get you number one in the right spot and then up front make sure all
51:40five guys are seeing it through the same lens you can't be the right tackle and oh i think i'm
51:45getting pressure from here and then the left tackle saying no no i'm getting pressure from here you have
51:49to see everything from the same lens and when there's pre look preseason's tough i mean you have
51:53so many moving parts and just as soon as you start to settle into left tackle okay great go play right
51:58tackle okay now i'm feeling really good at right guard great go play center for the next couple
52:03series right it's fast but that's what the coaches want to do they have to challenge these guys
52:08to be able to see who can process the information who can process what's going on in front of them
52:13in a second or two and to where we're not taking forever to get to you know to where you start getting
52:17to lay a games or free runners and it hooker gets drilled there on a fourth down it's hey guy
52:23on to bc with the hit and with the texans taking over we'll step aside and hear this from meyer
52:29the good life shouldn't be reserved for the field the finest cuisine should always be on the menu
52:39and looking good shouldn't just be for the rich and famous at meyer we believe that real life
52:45deserves real good and we work hard to bring more of it here quality meets value and selection meets
52:52savings so the good life is always within reach we do more to make life a good deal better
52:59at meyer all right we're 348 away tj from the regular season being on the clock where's your
53:07mind on the lions right now uh starting with the next couple days i want to see what this roster is
53:11going to look like and no matter what happens on tuesday uh that's not going to be the final roster
53:16you know you have you're going to have 69 guys in totality 53 on the uh regular squad and then 16
53:22practice squad guys now which i think is great that they bump that up give more guys opportunities
53:26to develop but that's that's going to be number one i want to watch some of the positions
53:29wide receiver we have hard time defensive line what is the depth going to look like there
53:34and then offensive line offensive line depth is certainly one of them but quarterback i mean i you
53:41know coach was very honest last week that said when he said that kyle allen looks like a number two
53:46quarterback and you know it'll be interesting to see if you know they want to keep three of those guys
53:51and keep developing the number two and number three however it shakes out or do we want to go
53:55heavier at another spot maybe you keep an extra receiver and you go lighter you know just rolling
53:59this season with two quarterbacks or rolling this season with only eight offensive linemen it's going
54:03to be interesting to see how brad and dan construct this roster going into next week and to be clear the
54:08reason you're talking about the 69 players and 53 players is you have the practice squad you have these
54:13other roster spots but you have to sneak them through to make sure that they're not claimed by other
54:17teams in certain circumstances so they think of it as a whole picture but if you keep one position
54:24part of it it's a little bit like options for relief pitchers in major league baseball some guys
54:30are out of options so it's tougher to send them down to the minors in this circumstance you might
54:36choose one rather than the other because of their ability to sneak through to the practice squad and those
54:43are all the decisions along with everybody else's roster decisions being made across the league at
54:48the same time and brad holmes has a tremendous record of judging which guys he believes he can get back
54:54on practice squad very rarely do they play the game okay we're gonna try to sneak him through and then
54:58they lose him he's he's very good at judging which guys he can get back and keep on that developmental
55:03squad more on this after the two-minute warning the two-minute warning
55:10our jack daniels make it count player of the game isaac tesla with his third touchdown of the preseason
55:17he did he always shows up on tape he's a rookie who division two to arkansas didn't play as
55:26much as he wanted to in arkansas but a local product who won a state title in this building
55:31as a quarterback that was predominantly a running quarterback he picked off two passes in the state
55:36title game and now he's dressed as a lion and he's going to be a real lion very soon yeah and how well
55:40can he stay grounded right a lot of success this uh preseason throughout training camp the joint
55:45practices obviously the games how can you continue to stay level-headed stay grounded keep working your
55:52way into this this system this offense keep building trust from your teammates your coaches putting
55:58yourself in the right position doing what you're supposed to do being where you're supposed to be
56:02all those cliche things that we talk about but at the end of the day make a difference and can really
56:06speed up your development as a player i know that he's a guy that like we said he kind of came in and
56:11they were okay you know we want to work it work him in a little bit see what kind of talent he has we
56:16know it's going to be you know a little bit of time right to to uh get used to this level of speed
56:22at the nfl but he's kind of gone from like a we think he can help us on special teams too oh we
56:29think he can help us everywhere yeah and as long as he can continue to get better the the sky is the
56:35limit for him he's got a ton of talent and his coaches and his teammates speak very high of him too
56:39so i think he's got he's got his head on his shoulders the right way he does the right things and
56:44he's going to have to continue to do that and it was a phenomenal worm after the touchdown as well
56:49it's a great you didn't like my 8.7 that i thought you undervalued it well you can't give the first
56:55worm ever you can't give it a perfect score jay you guys you know there's always room for improvement
56:59room for improvement certainly everybody always feels like that after pre-season anywhere no matter
57:05what not just tesla not roderick martin everybody wants to be better as you go into the regular season
57:11but this lions team has so much talent on the front line and it's harder to make this roster than it
57:16has been in a long time tesla making some friends kyle allen saying hello as well we are done with
57:25pre-season football the lions fall 26 to 7 here at ford field our cure auto post game show is coming
57:34up next we'll get tj's final thoughts on the pre-season and then springboard into the regular
57:39season jared goff the lions will take on the packers in a matter of just about two weeks we'll tell
57:45you about all that when we come back to ford field
