01 September - National Forecast Presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. It is meteorological autumn now, and so no real surprise that there's
00:06an unsettled autumnal feel to things as we go through this week. Starting off though,
00:10let's look at the earlier satellite imagery, and you don't need to be a meteorologist to
00:15be able to work out where the low pressure is centered. You can see around the swirl
00:18of cloud. Yes, a relatively mature low here, but it is the driving force for the showery
00:24blustery theme that we have across the country. There are a couple of occluded fronts making
00:29their way, and these fronts are quite important because they're where we're seeing the showers
00:34kind of banded together, so you may get some longer spells of rain. Elsewhere, a fair few
00:39showers for many of us already this morning, and as we go through this afternoon, we are
00:44going to continue to see those occluded fronts, bringing some more organized bands of showers
00:49perhaps, but even elsewhere, a fair few showers developing for many of us. Now, showers by
00:54their very nature, they're hit and miss, so not everywhere will necessarily see them, and
00:58they may not last especially long. There could be just a heavy, perhaps even thundery downpour
01:03with a bit of hail for a short period of time, and then the sun comes out, and it's all changed.
01:08Classic British weather at this time of year. Now, if you do get any sunny spells, temperatures
01:13are going to rise. High teens, low 20s for most of us, but worth factoring in that there will
01:18be some blustery winds with those showers, and so in the blustery winds, it's obviously going
01:22to feel a little bit fresher than this. Now, the showers will continue for a fair few of us
01:27for a little while as we go into the evening, but actually, then they'll start to fizzle
01:31out, and lots of places turning largely dry with some clear skies. Not everywhere, though.
01:36Northwestern parts of Western Scotland here, the showers will stay pretty frequent, could
01:41still be thundery, could still be heavy across some parts here, and a few showers across some
01:45western and perhaps southern coastal parts as well. But away from these zones, some dry,
01:50clear weather, and with that, then I'm expecting temperatures to be a little bit lower than last night.
01:55Not particularly remarkable. Towns and cities generally holding up in double digits, but
01:59more rural spots could quite easily fall into single figures. And then tomorrow, a big talking
02:05point is a swathe of cloud and more persistent rain that's pushing into parts of the southwest.
02:10We'll have reached Devon and Cornwall by dawn, and then it's going to feed its way eastwards,
02:14a little bit further northwards as well, across southern counties as we go through the day.
02:18Now, this rain could be quite persistent for a time, could be quite heavy as well, and there
02:22may even be some rumbles of thunder mixed in as it starts to wrap its way up in towards
02:27East Anglia later on in the afternoon. Now, elsewhere, it's again another day of some
02:32sunny breaks and showers. The showers look heaviest across parts of northwest Scotland.
02:37Here again, there could be some thunder mixed in, so some hail, some lightning, and watch out
02:42for those blustery winds. Elsewhere, the showers don't look quite as intense or as widespread
02:46as the ones that we'll have seen through today. Temperature-wise, well, it's looking fairly similar
02:51to today, really high teens, low 20s. It's really a case of where you get the sunshine
02:56that you get the chance of the highest temperatures, so perhaps across parts of the southwest with
03:00the system clearing away and a bit more brightness developing later. That's where we have a greatest
03:05chance of getting to highs of around 21 or 22 Celsius.
03:10Then there's more unsettled weather to come as we go through the rest of this week. Watch
03:13out for Wednesday because we do have a system coming across, and that's going to bring some
03:17pretty wet and pretty windy weather. We'll probably need to issue some warnings for that,
03:21especially across parts of the south-southeast, coastal gales, that kind of thing. Then Thursday's
03:26looking like a showery day at the moment, so more hit and miss rain coming and going.
03:31And then by Friday and into the weekend, a bit of a northwest-southeast split,
03:35so across northwestern parts, it's looking fairly wet. In the southeast, it's actually looking largely dry.
03:40For many places, actually, Friday's going to be the driest day of the week. But if you want more
03:45information about what to expect through the week as a whole, well, check out our week ahead forecast,
03:49which Alex Deacon will be bringing to you later. Bye-bye.
