00:00Full practice, participation, information, sensation.
00:06Wow, it's two bucks.
00:08Cha-ting!
00:09Just so everybody kind of has a lay of the land.
00:14And, you know, we've been talking about Kendricks and Wallow so much,
00:17we're leaving D. Winters out of the conversation, and we shouldn't.
00:21He has practiced in a limited fashion both days this week,
00:24so he very well could be back in there.
00:27Fred Warner, back-to-back, limited participations.
00:31So, they are not ruling that out.
00:33Ricky Pearsall, limited yesterday, limited today, but said today he expects to play.
00:39Trent Williams upgraded from limited to full,
00:42and those on the scene said that he looked much more active than he did
00:47leading into last week's game.
00:49So, there's all of that.
00:50Dominic Pune was limited both days.
00:53Grosmatos limited both days.
00:54Your did-not-participate guys who I think right now are trending on definitely not playing
01:00are Jair Brown and Luke Gifford.
01:02Yeah, that sounds about right.
01:03But outside of that, I mean, you know, obviously, George Kittle's not playing in this game,
01:08but I don't know, man.
01:11This is turning to, if Fred Warner and D. Winters walk out there
01:14when the defense hits the field on Saturday night, this is a freaking Disney movie.
01:20But D. Winters I would expect to play, honestly.
01:22Yeah, it's not really about D, but you get what I'm saying.
01:25If Fred comes out there, then, yeah, we're starting to talk about something really dramatic
01:30and special.
01:31If he was able to do what he does so well, which is punch one out or, you know,
01:35find his way to get a pick and, you know, maybe seal a game with a big-time play.
01:40It can happen.
01:40Just be the best linebacker in the sport.
01:43Yeah, you can do that.
01:45Yeah, he is.
01:46He's allowed to, right?
01:47He is.
01:48I mean, I don't know if he would be right now.
01:51This is insanity.
01:54The foot was going the other way.
01:56It's pretty bad, yeah.
01:57Pretty bad, but, you know.
01:58Today, he's just running around in Santa Clara.
02:01Modern medicine, and these guys do get the ultimate in surgery and treatment.
02:06Totally.
02:07If you think about it, like, it's literally their job to get better, and Fred Warner attacked
02:12his rehab with ferocity.
02:13You know that.
02:14So, you get hurt.
02:16You're bummed.
02:17You post on Instagram.
02:18Then, you put ice on it.
02:20You get surgery, and you start rehab immediately, and your whole life is your lovely family and
02:25rehab.
02:26Rehab and your lovely family.
02:28It's not like you and I, where you've got three kids, five if you count the stepkids.
02:34You've got four jobs.
02:35You've got to deal with me, Grandy, and Lucas.
02:37You've got to commute and this and that, and yeah, I've got to rehab this injury, too.
02:41Fred gets to do four to six to eight hours of rehab and treatment and stim and ice and
02:47heat and all the rest of it.
02:48I know.
02:49I'm not saying it makes it easier when your foot is facing the wrong way, but you don't
02:53have to worry about, oh, I've got to get out to Emeryville for my hour appointment and
02:57the copay and all the rest of that nonsense.
03:00That's all true.
03:00So, I don't want to delay this any further, like what I said about George Kittle that was
03:06encouraging, and I said I did a deep dive, which is a total lie.
03:11No, I didn't do a deep dive.
03:13I just listened to our guy.
03:16That's it.
03:16I did do a dive on Doc Pandia information, and Doc Pandia said two things that I think
03:27are really encouraging.
03:31Achilles injuries today, the metrics are now at nine to 12 months.
03:38So, sure, it could be 12 months, which would mean missing the whole season unless the Niners
03:43make the playoffs next year.
03:46But nine months is not missing the season at all.
03:50Nine months gets you back about week five, week six, somewhere in there.
03:55Furthermore, he added that position by position, if you look at the results of an Achilles injury,
04:04because guys do different things.
04:08And so, what are the metrics position by position in terms of return to play?
04:14And at the highest level, at the quickest level, position-wise, tight end.
04:21So, put those two things together.
04:25I'm not now suddenly saying, sweet, we're good to go for the week five game.
04:29I have no idea, but you read those two things, and you're like, well, I'm certainly not ruling
04:36George Kittle out for the entire year next year.
04:39Of course not.
04:40Well, when he left on the card, I was.
04:43I'm like, it's January.
04:44It's an Achilles.
04:46You've had your 30th birthday.
04:48You're not playing next year.
04:50That's what went through my head.
04:51I don't think the Achilles cares how old you are, and it just comes down to how you go
04:56about repairing it, and I was actually talking to one of Doc Pandia's co-workers from when
05:02Pandia started, Jim Shively.
05:04So, I'm texting Pandia.
05:05I'm like, I'm here with Shives.
05:07Just met the man, friend of my father-in-law's, whatever.
05:09And so, we're talking about it, and I said to Jim, hey, how do you go about repairing it?
05:14Because I know when you tear an ACL, you get either a piece of your hamstring, or you
05:19get a cadaver, and then they stitch that baby in there.
05:22And he said, when you tear your Achilles, you rupture it.
05:25They just stitch that baby back together.
05:28That's why it takes so long for it to completely heal, and then you rehab it before you can
05:33go out there and test it again.
05:34I'm sorry for chuckling in that.
05:36I love what we do for a living.
05:38He's listening.
05:39Of course he is.
05:40Of course.
05:41So, it's almost, you know what the next question is the next time Doc comes on?
05:46Are you actually a doctor, and do you do?
05:49Because you're just listening to 95.7 The Game the entire day.
05:53It's a great question.
05:54Having had multiple surgeries, I do know that surgery usually happens early in the
05:58day.
05:58That's fair, but I'm also like, dude, are you doing AirPods when you're in the operating
06:03room, listening to Shasky be like, shut the head, shut the head, shut the head.
06:09Like, is that what you do?
06:10Shut the head.
06:11Anyway.
06:12Anyway.
06:13You bastard.
06:15Scalpel.
06:17What's your boy?
06:18Spadoni.
06:19Wait, what was that Doc?
06:20I love you.
06:21No.
06:21Sponge.
06:23Scalpel.
06:23Matt Joe.
06:25Text line.
06:26Doc, are you okay?
06:27Can you imagine?
06:29All right.
06:29Anyway, Doc, thank you for listening.
06:32Thank you for all you do.
06:33And I loved everything that you put out there about the Kittle injury.
06:37And here's what he just wrote to us just now in listening to us talk.
06:40I think there is a very high likelihood that Kittle could be back late September, early
06:49October, particularly with some of the new surgical techniques.
06:53Remember, Aaron Rodgers was like, I'll be back in two weeks.
06:57Right.
06:58And he's a crazy person, but whatever.
07:02So there it is.
07:03Doc Pandia says high likelihood late September, early October.
07:08That's a few games.
07:12Yeah.
07:12I mean, a month, essentially.
07:13Four or five games, if that's the way it goes.
07:15We don't even start until like a week and a half into September.
07:18Labor Day-ish.
07:19Yeah.
07:19You talked about it before about, yeah, put him on the pup four weeks and then, all right,
07:23George, here we go.
07:24Maybe.
07:25You never know.
07:26And I'm not going to compare the people and the characters when I say Iyuk and Kittle,
07:31because Iyuk, his rehab, it seemed like, and I was going through the return to play
07:35protocols on the average for the ACL and the MCL, like what it normally is.
07:40And it fell within a certain range.
07:42And even when we got in the middle of that range, it's like, okay, Iyuk should be getting
07:46ready to roll here because, you know, the medical history says that 300 days is about
07:51what it should be.
07:52And he obviously never came back for other reasons, but you do feel enthused by the
07:56fact that George Kittle, much like Fred Warner, will attack this thing.
08:01Oh.
08:02And I do believe.
08:02It's George.
08:03Exactly.
08:03He's having surgery either today or tomorrow.
08:05I think you're right.
08:06Yeah.
08:06And then, you know, from there, you start to, I'm sure it's like three months of you do nothing
08:11and then you start to work through it.
08:12I'm not ruling him out of the Super Bowl.
08:15Next year.
08:16Next year's Super Bowl.
08:16No, no, no, no, no, no.
08:17I mean, it's George Kittle we're talking about.
08:20Yeah.
08:20Okay.
08:21Ayahuasca.
08:24Ayahuasca.
08:26No, I, I, so anyway, that, I found that to be both interesting, encouraging, and fun.
08:32And then, you know, the other side of it about what Grandy was talking about, I get it.
08:38Fred and George are, these are, these are different animals, man.
08:42These are, these are, this, they are very, very special to 49er fans.
08:47And if they do become among the Patrick Willis's and Frank Gore's, it's going to be a bummer.
08:53But at the same time, I, I'm like, tap the brakes a little bit on the, this is their last chance.
09:02And quite frankly, we don't even know if either of them are going to participate this year.
09:05We know one of them won't for sure.
09:08But like, I think these guys have a decent amount of tread on, on, on the tires.
09:15And, and sitting where the 49ers are, like, I kind of dig that, you know, remember now, this was supposed to be a retool year.
09:24This is supposed to be like a rework the defense and, and send it on a track that sets the 49ers up to really go after it a year or two from now.
09:36Um, and then things unfolded the way they did, but the way everybody's finally feeling about Kyle Shanahan, welcome to the party, by the way.
09:45Um, and, and the way people are now feeling about Brock Purdy, who's about to start his contract.
09:50Like, the Niners are, they're in position to compete every year right now for a handful of years.
09:58I don't know what's going to happen, the major injuries, blah, blah, blah, all that.
10:01But, like, this is, this is not some sort of like, put it this way, this is not the Golden State Warriors.
10:08Well, the end is much nearer for the Warriors, just based on age.
10:11A lot of people think the end is already.
10:13That's fine.
10:14I mean, they're, they're on pace to win, what, 44 games this year?
10:18And there'll be a playing team.
10:19And, you know, all they want is a shot in April.
10:22So, they're on pace to be that, which means, you know, like last year, they had a chance.
10:27If Steph didn't get hurt, everyone telling me that Minnesota was vulnerable.
10:31I don't know about OKC, but the point is, what Shanahan said in August was, you know,
10:36we just want to be in the tournament and stuff, and we just want to have a chance at it.
10:39And here you are, you have a chance at it.
10:41And Kittle is signed through 2029, which means next year, and then three more after that,
10:47even though, you know how those contracts work, he probably won't play it all the way out.
10:51But next year will be his 33-year-old year.
10:54He's been mostly durable for the majority of his career.
10:57And if he comes back from this in October, he has a chance to have another really sturdy year.
11:03It's interesting.
11:04Like, I just looked up Zach Ertz.
11:07And the reason I did that is, like, what is the norm for a tight end getting a little long in the tooth,
11:16but he can still certainly perform?
11:18How old do you think Zach Ertz is?
11:20Because Zach, by the way, I thought he'd be pretty good the last couple of years,
11:23but he's getting late in the career, he just tore his ACL, and when he left the field
11:27with, I think, one or two weeks left to go in the regular season, I'm like, oof, that's probably it.
11:34He's got to be 34, 35, I would bet.
11:37He's 35 years old.
11:38He just turned 35 in November.
11:40I remember doing his high school games on local TV.
11:43Really?
11:43Geez.
11:43You want to talk about a power forward now?
11:45Oh, dude.
11:46He was a handful.
11:47Yeah.
11:47I did their game against De La Salle, and I think it was a 31-30 final up there in Monta Vista,
11:53and De La Salle had a 6'8 kid, and I think Mark Appel was playing in that game,
11:58the former No. 1 overall draft pick, pitcher, who never really materialized in Major League Baseball.
12:04But Zach Ertz was a handful on the court.
12:07I bet.
12:07I bet.
12:08But that was what went through my head, and it looked like that might have been what was going through his head,
12:13because he was very emotional when leaving the field, and I'm like,
12:16you're not emotional because you're missing the playoffs because you're on Washington, and they suck.
12:21So, like, what's going through your mind?
12:23And I'm guessing.
12:24I don't know.
12:25But it felt like somebody who was thinking to himself,
12:30am I on a cart, and am I leaving a football field for the last time?
12:34Travis Kelsey at 36, where he didn't get carted off.
12:38His quarterback did a few weeks earlier, and he's walking off, and everyone's thinking,
12:41all right, that's it, you know.
12:44Don't shake it off.
12:45You're going to go see Taylor shows now for the rest of your days.
12:48And I know, like, George, dude, this is third injury this year.
12:53Like, he had, and one of them was kind of minor-ish, and the other one was pretty major-ish.
12:58And what did he miss, six games?
13:00With the hammy?
13:00Yeah, the hamstring.
13:01They called it a full tear.
13:02Like, he missed a month and a half.
13:04So, add all that together, and are we ever going to see George kind of perform the way he has in the past?
13:12I can't say that.
13:13Maybe not.
13:14But do I still think he's got productive years coming up?
13:18Absolutely.
13:20Now, that said, this is a very good tight end class this year.
13:24Is that something that the 49ers maybe would have been thinking about anyway?
13:29Because George is about to turn 33, and now he's turning 33 with an Achilles.
13:34And that was the reason I brought up the 30th birthday, by the way.
13:37Right, right.
13:37Tight ends can perform beyond 30.
13:39There is a thing in sports, and maybe Doc Pandia can weigh in on this too, but I remember this when Kobe did it against the Warriors, there was this, there's this thing.
13:49That injury, after 30, usually means athlete is never the same again.
13:56Maybe that's different now, but 10, 15 years ago, that was always the thing.
14:01Like, that's the worst injury, and you really don't want it after age 30, because that's when you can return, but you're never really, you don't have the burst that you used to have.
14:12And I think basketball is much more of a factor.
14:14For sure.
14:15Because you need that, you need the bounce, you need that lift, you need more of that short area explosiveness.
14:20Now, George Kittle, he has that in many ways, but he could still be a good tight end and maybe not be as quick.
14:28Maybe it's not as much yak when he comes back from the Achilles, but yeah, I was thinking about Klay Thompson too, how old he was when he did his Achilles, and he was right about 30, because he was 28 in the finals when he did the ACL, missed that year, and then got hurt again, and then missed the next year as well.
14:47And I'd like to ask the question, now that we've arrived where we are, did Klay Thompson ever look the same again?
14:53He did in the short run?
14:54I disagree.
14:55Well, he averaged 20 and then 22.
14:57He was good.
14:59He was good.
15:00If you want to look at just numbers and the fact that he was a part of a championship team that first year back, then two years after, he still looked very close to old Klay, and subsequently, no, he hasn't.
15:11Yeah.
15:11But he was not the second best player on the championship team.
15:14He was during the year, but not in the finals.
15:17Yeah, Andrew Wiggins runs.
15:18Andrew Wiggins.
15:19Hi, this is Andrew Wiggins.
15:20It would have been good to get him to tell you that your picks stink.
15:25Although they didn't this week.
15:27Maybe when they acquire Wiggins tomorrow, he'll get a chance to do that.
15:31I've been traded back to the Warriors.
15:33This is Andrew Wiggins.
15:34He would hate that.
15:37I don't even know.
15:38Nobody knows what Andrew's ever thinking, but I feel like he would hate that.
15:42I mean, you never know.
15:44Come play with Jimmy Butler.
15:46I'm sure Jimmy wouldn't mind if he took a couple possessions off.
15:48Hang on.
15:49We got more Doc texts.
15:52Most of the data now suggests that you have a first season drop-off, and then the second season,
15:58it ends up being more normalized, but career length is shortened.
16:04Oh, I'm on these.
16:05Yeah, I told you he was texting us.
16:08I know, but...
16:08Not just texting me.
16:09You know.
16:10Doc isn't thoughtful like that.
16:12He knows, especially you.
16:13You get your feelings all hurt.
16:15I'm just doing a show here.
16:16I'm not all on my phone all the time.
16:17Well, no, the Doc is...
16:18This is part of the show.
16:20The Doc has always been part of our show.
16:22The Doc is in.
16:23Yeah.
16:23No doubt.
16:24He's locked in.
16:25He's yoked in.
16:26Yeah.
16:27Look at him.
16:28This is like firing script here on the fly.
16:31Gotta love it.
16:32Yeah.
16:33Anyway.
16:34Yeah, career shortened, and so, you know, can Kittle play until he's 36?
16:39Maybe.
16:39Maybe, and what you said before, though, I think is a part of the story.
16:43I was looking at Travis Kelsey's career.
16:46He played in 15 or more games every year.
16:49Every year.
16:50Kittle has a couple of eights in there.
16:52He's got a 12, and so, not that he's been fragile.
16:56Somebody earlier on one of the platforms chimed in with that.
16:59That's totally unfair and wrong.
17:01Completely.
17:02But George has had a number of injuries.
17:04Well, Travis is still waiting to block someone for the first time in his life.
17:09Fine.
17:09I mean, he's also figuring out where to store his rings when he goes on tour with Taylor.
17:13Not taking a shot.
17:14Just telling you they play a different brand of football.
17:16You took a shot.
17:17They play a different brand of football.
17:21They do.
17:23It's just different schemes.
17:25So, yeah.
17:25Yes.
17:25Well, no, one of them is not really asked to block that much.
17:29He's a receiver.
17:29And the other one's not being asked to play all the time.
17:33Yes, he is.
17:34I mean, he's being asked to, but he's not available.
17:37Right.
17:37All the time.
17:38Yeah.
17:39Yeah.
17:39He's a pretty good record through his career.
17:41Yeah.
17:42Yeah.
17:42Pretty good record.
17:43Pretty good.
17:44And when he's out there, he's phenomenal.
17:46He's going to be in the Hall of Fame eventually.
17:48I get.
17:49I don't like it when we're all football.
17:51Like, even right now, can I share something with you that's starting to tick me off?
17:56Save it for Friday.
17:57No, because our brothers in the morning, I love you like brothers.
18:02I text with them all the time.
18:04But to take his shots and yucking it up at Pearsall's expense this morning, in my opinion.
18:11They probably would say, no, we weren't.
18:13But, like, I just, we're not there yet.
18:17I will acknowledge the frustration of Ricky Pearsall's lack of availability through his
18:23first two years of football.
18:25But I don't like it when we immediately jump when someone has struggled with injury two
18:32seasons in a row.
18:34And he didn't even really struggle with injury during his rookie year.
18:38He got shot.
18:39He struggled with injury before he got shot in camp.
18:42Yes, for sure.
18:44Absolutely.
18:45Which, by the way, is far from reserved for Ricky.
18:49Like, I just think we do that.
18:51We jump really quickly on the football front, especially, to this guy's brittle.
18:58Or this guy is, you know, he made a glass or whatever.
19:01It's like, come on, man.
19:03This is football.
19:05It always makes me laugh.
19:06Actually, this text came from my buddies over the weekend.
19:10They're like, did Pearsall have an injury history when he was drafted?
19:14I don't know if there's ever been a football player that doesn't have an injury history
19:18when you draft them.
19:20Like, are some injuries bigger than others?
19:22Yes.
19:23There's no such thing as...
19:24Do some have more injuries than others?
19:26Yes.
19:26Yes.
19:27But, like, is there an injury history?
19:29Yeah.
19:30He's a football player.
19:32Answers yes.
19:32He's played in 20 of the 35 available games in his two-year career.
19:37How much of those, though, will fall under the gunshot wound?
19:41Because you can, in my mind, I remove those.
19:44That's not, to me, that's not fair.
19:45He didn't play the first six last year.
19:47Now, was that all gunshot-related, or was he also nursing another injury?
19:51I think those were gunshot-related.
19:52Okay.
19:53I mean, the OTAs and the camp and, like, it's a fair question, but don't start yucking it up
19:59and being like, ah, he's a little wimpy boy.
20:02Like, that stuff is just, to me, if I were a football player and that was fans and media,
20:08like, no wonder there's a little bit of tension there.
20:11I'd want to punch somebody in the face if that's what they were saying about me.
20:14If you wanted to do the yuck it up thing, you'd go to Jacob Cowling, for example,
20:19as a guy who can't get healthy and can't play.
20:23Full participant today.
20:24Okay.
20:25Cool.
20:26You think he'll be up on game day?
20:27I don't know.
20:28I'm telling you, he won't be.
20:29Probably not.
20:30Probably not.
20:30Probably not.
20:31So, I mean, there's other players that they've had, and, you know, the Oregon running back
20:35who's been unable to ever play for this team.
20:37Yeah.
20:37The rookie.
20:38He's been active the last couple weeks, Dibs.
20:40Yeah, active.
20:41What's he done?
20:42No, well, see, but I don't...
20:43He's passed Garendo.
20:44Garendo's now the inactive running back.
20:46Ooh, there he goes.
20:47Scoreboard, Dibs!
20:48What's, like, I mean, he's a backup.
20:49He has not cracked Christian McCaffrey and Brian Robinson, which is not really a slight, by the
20:56way, you have not cracked a Hall of Famer and another very accomplished NFL running back.
21:02Okay.
21:02Yeah, Dibs.
21:03But he's just a backup.
21:04In large part, his season has been beset by inability to actually be healthy enough to
21:09even threaten.
21:10Well, and this is one year of his life.
21:13Right.
21:14Do you know what I mean?
21:14He's a bust.
21:15Yeah.
21:16Well, okay.
21:18I mean, if you're afraid to call it as you see it, I'm not.
21:22How come you won't do that with any of the Warriors?
21:24How come you wouldn't, like, you still get uncomfortable when I call James Wiseman a
21:28bust?
21:28Oh, his race is not yet run.
21:29Oh, fuck right.
21:30We'll see where he lands, but it's not looking good.
21:33His race has been very run.
21:36Yes, it has.
21:36Trey Lance, third team now, and...
21:38Bust?
21:39I'm afraid so.
21:41Poor Justin Herbert's getting his spleen removed, and...
21:44Good Lord.
21:45You know, Harbaugh's like, should I go to...
21:47No.
21:48Get up, Justin!
21:49I'm going to need you to get up.
21:51Dude, that was one of the...
21:52And I was...
21:53Okay, I'm doing the show with an offensive lineman on Sunday night.
21:56Kind of doing the show.
21:58Part of it.
21:58But anyway, I've never heard...
22:00I've never heard him like this, because that game was on during the show, and he literally
22:05was...
22:06He didn't want to watch the game anymore.
22:08He was so uncomfortable watching that Charger offensive line.
22:12And it's not their...
22:13I don't want to say it's not their fault.
22:14It is their job.
22:15But, like, they are second and third and fourth string offensive linemen.
22:19The Chargers have been so crushed by offensive line injury.
22:24But, then again, there's also guys out there who are first stringers, and they're not playing
22:28well.
22:29But he was uncomfortable watching that game as it was happening, because, like, you're
22:34going to get Justin killed.
22:36Literally.
22:37Literally.
22:37That one's out there.
22:37That one's right.
22:40Ah!
22:41Mm-hmm.
