00:00I want everybody to really understand what's in play here with the Jawan Jennings thing
00:04and go to one of the staples of this radio show.
00:09If it's out in the public, there's a reason.
00:12That means somebody in private wants it in the public.
00:18They want us to see it.
00:20They want the particulars to see it.
00:23There's no need to tell us what's going on with Jawan Jennings.
00:26But if somebody does, it's because they want it out there.
00:30So there's what they say at the podium, and then there's what they tell reporters.
00:37Go write that.
00:39And then as soon as they write it, we go, oh, okay.
00:43So Kawakami's article, SF Standard, I find to be very, very revealing.
00:49He literally writes, there's growing frustration on both sides
00:53as Jennings continues to mispractice with a calf injury
00:57and Niners management continues to show little interest in restructuring his contract.
01:02Growing frustration on both sides.
01:04That can't just be about the calf.
01:07So all of a sudden, multiple NFL sources tell Tim
01:12that they might put Jennings on IR.
01:16That might be the way to just sort of like fix the whole thing, right?
01:20Because that way, well, we could use the roster spot.
01:24Go get another receiver.
01:25Get ready for week one.
01:27Well, that's not what it's about at all.
01:29And Kawakami writes, quote,
01:32here's what I really want everyone to hear.
01:34So if somebody else in your car is talking,
01:37you tell them to shut up.
01:39This is the line.
01:40The mentioning of IR by the 49ers also, let's be clear,
01:47could be a tacit threat to the Jennings camp
01:51to try to get him back on the practice field in time
01:55to be ready for week one.
01:57That's exactly what it is.
02:00Jennings has a bunch of contract incentives this year.
02:03The money that he is sort of, quote, unquote,
02:05scheduled to make will undoubtedly go way down
02:09if he misses a quarter of the season
02:11because they're incentives.
02:13He won't hit them.
02:14Yep.
02:14He needs a certain number of yards,
02:15a certain number of touchdowns,
02:17a certain number of, right, all that.
02:18It's about $3 million in total, the incentives.
02:20Which is a lot for a guy who's only made 10 in his career
02:24and is only scheduled to make about seven or eight this year.
02:27This is a big portion of the deal.
02:30So if the Niners believe,
02:32when you pair that commentary with the fact that Kyle said,
02:35yeah, he should be ready to go by week one,
02:37well, then why would you put him on IR?
02:40So that's why I've sort of lost all thought about a calf injury.
02:44I don't know if his calf hurts,
02:46but when I'm listening to the two sides talk
02:48and knowing that Tim has this information
02:50and somebody wants him to have this information,
02:53we're in full-blown holdout mode.
02:55We are, this is a negotiation sensation.
02:58It is on and tick-tock.
03:02Yeah, and I don't even know
03:04if we are in full-on negotiating period.
03:06We might be beyond that,
03:08where he comes out and has his Instagram post
03:12that basically says,
03:13you guys are messing with the wrong individual.
03:15And that is not by accident.
03:18You know, when you post something like that on Instagram,
03:20he's clearly frustrated
03:22because he feels like they're, quote,
03:25messing with him.
03:26And so then the Niners come out today
03:28through Tim Kawakami
03:30and basically say,
03:31yeah, IR is definitely a possibility.
03:34So if it gets to this point
03:36where you're using the media
03:37and you're having reporters write stories
03:40or reporters are writing stories
03:42and you're putting stuff out on Instagram,
03:44we've gotten to the stalemate portion,
03:47I think, more than we are in active negotiation.
03:50I could be wrong,
03:51but the tone of this feels different
03:53than it has throughout the entire last month.
03:55The IG post,
03:56for those of you not familiar with that,
03:59is of an artist named Offset.
04:02And the track is called Move On.
04:06And the quote is,
04:08you bleeped around with the wrong dude.
04:10Hope your next bleep be great.
04:15Yeah.
04:15That's what Juwan posted,
04:17and I don't think it's just because he likes the track.
04:20Probably a good track.
04:21I mean, Offset.
04:22I haven't heard it yet.
04:23Migos.
04:24It's new.
04:24Yeah, it's fresh.
04:25It's fresh hit.
04:26But yeah, I don't think that that would be the reason.
04:29So he comes out and he puts that out there
04:31because he's feeling like he's being messed with.
04:34And he wants to, quote, move on.
04:37But the team has no real desire,
04:40I don't think, to trade Juwan Jennings.
04:42None.
04:42He's worth more to them than he is to another team
04:45because of the way he plays
04:47and the way that the 49ers run their offense,
04:50the way he blocks and how important that is for the 49ers.
04:53So even if they entertained the idea of a trade,
04:57I don't think that they would get the value back
04:59that he can provide them as a member of the Niners.
05:02Agreed.
05:03Especially at this hour.
05:04Although I don't know that I would say it that way
05:06where it's like I don't know what he'd be worth to another team
05:10if they had acquired him in July
05:11and he had a full ramp up.
05:14Like, I think Juwan is a really good player.
05:16I think he could be valuable in a lot of spots.
05:19But there's no doubt that Juwan Jennings plays football
05:23exactly the way the 49ers want people to play football.
05:27And his attitude is exactly what they want 49er players' attitudes to be.
05:33Like, I love this dude.
05:35He's such a team guy.
05:36He's so physical.
05:38He does all the dirty work in addition to last year
05:40proving that he can do kind of the sex appeal work, too,
05:43of a wide receiver and go for almost 1,000 yards.
05:47So, I'll just agree with you in saying
05:50it doesn't even matter to me what he might be worth to another team.
05:55I think he's incredibly valuable to the 49ers.
05:58And I think that they need him on the field.
06:00It doesn't mean, oh, they can't win games without him.
06:03I don't mean that.
06:05But he does it exactly the way they want to do it.
06:08And I think he's a really good player.
06:10And you can't have too many of those.
06:12And then when you tuck it into the current situation
06:15where they are so thin, specifically at that position,
06:18who knows who's going to be back and whatnot.
06:20But they're so thin.
06:21And therefore, there's not really been time for Brock Purdy
06:25to build rapport with a lot of these receivers
06:27other than Ricky Pearsall.
06:29That's the other thing that worries me.
06:30I think you can put other good receivers on the field.
06:33How many of them have chemistry with Brock?
06:35Because Juwan does.
06:36So, all of that adds up to, I think this is a big deal.
06:40I think the Niners need to get him on the field.
06:42It doesn't mean they have to be the one to blink.
06:45Because as I've said all along, I don't know what he's asking for.
06:48But I think for both sides, this only and immediately goes to a bad place for everyone
06:56if he is not buttoned up, ready to go, on the roster and on the practice field this week.
07:05Likely by tomorrow.
07:06Yeah, tomorrow no practice, so today was a day.
07:09Tomorrow's cut down, but by tomorrow, set up.
07:12I'm with you.
07:12Wednesday, practice.
07:13Yeah, and then you get into a few days of shaking off the cobwebs,
07:17and then the week after that is game week.
07:19And you start to get the install, the offense installed into the game plan.
07:24And hopefully, if he's able to do that, the calf doesn't flare up.
07:28However, the calf is either hurt or not hurt.
07:31We have no idea, but just reading his IG post and looking at that and then hearing the comments
07:39from Shanahan and reading the Kawakami piece, it doesn't make me think that they're just
07:43a couple of million apart.
07:45This feels to me like a wide gulf between the two sides that has gotten it to this point
07:51where now he's blasting away on IG and, you know, stories are getting written by those
07:57in the know about, oh, you know, could be IR.
08:00There's other things the Niners could do.
08:02This feels like they're far apart to me.
08:04Well, I get it, although what if I throw this at you?
08:07I sort of feel like it's designed to feel like they're far apart.
08:10I have no doubt that there's frustration.
08:12That happens.
08:13It happens in workplaces.
08:14It happened with Trey Hendrickson and the Bengals.
08:16And today, they got it figured out.
08:17Now, it's happening between Jacoby Myers and the Raiders.
08:21Will they get it figured out?
08:22I don't know.
08:23You know, like, sometimes I also feel like this is football and you're allowed to play
08:27with frustration.
08:28I think most people play with frustration.
08:30It's a frustrating sport.
08:31You have to go out there angry and violent and aggressive and mad and all of those things.
08:36So, if Juwan is ticked off at the Niners while he's playing, that's okay.
08:41That's okay.
08:42I don't think that means he will play poorly.
08:44What's not okay is him not practicing and then getting out there to play.
08:49Nothing good happens.
08:51Tomorrow at 1 o'clock is actually, like, midnight.
08:56You know the phrase, nothing good happens after midnight.
08:58So, tomorrow at 1 o'clock, it's actually midnight.
09:01Nothing good happens after tomorrow for Juwan and the Niners.
09:04I think both sides go to a really bad place if they can't get this figured out one way or the other.
09:10Even if it just means somebody throwing their tail between their legs.
09:13It might mean that.
09:14Sometimes you've got to take an L.
09:17But, you've got to have this figured out one way or another to me in the next 48 hours.
09:23Yeah, it would be nice.
09:24I mean, you obviously don't have to.
09:26And we've seen these, like the Nick Bosa dragged into the first week of the season.
09:31Game week.
09:31Doesn't go well, though.
09:33And it didn't go great.
09:34I mean, he had a better year than people want to allow for.
09:37But, ideally, it's not the way you would go about it.
09:40And if you're Kyle Shanahan, you want to know who you're going to have available as you get ready to play that first game of the season.
09:47And the interesting part about this is, because he has been injured through all this, that they can just have him come back.
09:56And it doesn't have to be a big embarrassment for him.
09:58He can just suddenly be healthy and just report.
10:01And, you know, the contract thing can go to the wayside and he can just be a 49er.
10:06Yeah, but then there's no new deal.
10:07Like, if there's a new deal, it will be reported.
10:09Of course.
10:10If there's no new deal, then Juwan...
10:11If there's no new deal, he could still just show up and play football.
10:15He may have to.
10:16I have no doubt that he will.
10:17But that, in my...
10:19The problem with that is that I don't think that that will go well.
10:23We've watched this.
10:24You're not wrong.
10:25Nick Bosa didn't have this awful year.
10:27He was a little disappointing.
10:29But the point is, is it takes time to ramp up.
10:32Like, I have every belief, if they just look at Juwan and they're like,
10:35Too bad, dude.
10:35We're doing nothing.
10:37See ya.
10:38Sharpie.
10:39It's over.
10:40If they do that, I do think Juwan will show up next week.
10:44But I don't think it'll go well.
10:46I think he'll get hurt.
10:47I think he'll underperform.
10:49I don't think he'll be in correct game shape.
10:53There's a big difference.
10:55It's already late.
10:56It's already late.
10:57Next week, to me, is too late.
11:00Brandon Ayuk's season last year was doomed from the get-go.
11:04And it did all of the things.
11:05It had all of the characteristics that a lengthy and divisive negotiation has.
11:12He showed up.
11:13He was rusty.
11:14And then he got hurt.
11:15So he barely played any good football.
11:17And then he was gone.
11:18And I do not want that for Juwan Jennings.
11:21That does not sound like a good situation for the 49ers.
11:25And certainly not for him.
11:27Certainly not for him.
11:28Because if he does come back with no new deal, guess what?
11:30He's a free agent at the end of the year.
11:32Right.
11:33So he has to go out there.
11:34And if he gets no new deal, he has to go out there and ball out and make it so that the 49ers will regret not giving him more money.
11:42Because he'll go be a free agent.
11:43And just looking at his escalators in his contract, 50% of the snaps, he gets $1.5 million.
11:51And if you lose four games, then it's harder to get all the way up to 50% of the snaps if you happen to sustain an injury later in the year.
12:0060 catches, he gets money.
12:02600 yards, he gets money.
12:04Six touchdowns, he gets money.
12:06All three of those are $666,000.
12:09So in total, it's more than three mil that he stands to earn by playing and playing as well as he did last year.
12:17Yeah.
12:17Once again, here's the Shanahan take.
12:20We'll take your calls on this.
12:21If you're taking sides, Niners or Jennings, and kind of how you interpret Kyle Shanahan's commentary after the game.
12:30Asked about Juwan's availability for week one.
12:34It's been almost a month since Juwan last practice.
12:37Is he in jeopardy of missing week one?
12:39I mean, if it doesn't heal, yes.
12:41But I expect him to be back.
12:43I think he should be back from it.
12:44But you never know with calves.
12:46Do you expect Juwan's calf to be this severe when he re-aggravated it earlier in camp?
12:52I'm not a doctor.
12:54So like I said, calves take time.
12:57You never know with calves.
12:58Okay.
12:59There's another characteristic that just hit me.
13:01Kyle's so good at this.
13:05I'm not a doctor.
13:06Head coaches are so good at this.
13:08You have to be.
13:09When Kyle's answers are really short, that just sort of means like I can't answer your question.
13:18Yeah.
13:18In other words, I'm not going there.
13:21So I'm just going to give you a little this.
13:24I'm not a doctor.
13:26So that's it.
13:29And his first answer of if it heals.
13:31And then I fully expect him to be out there for week one.
13:34Should be.
13:35Yeah.
13:35By the way, that's a big statement.
13:38Should be.
13:38Should be healed.
13:39That's right.
13:40Well, it should be healed.
13:41In other words, it's going to be healed.
13:43It's already healed.
13:45It is healed.
13:45And once he gets over the reality that he's not getting any more money from us and he
13:50gets all up in his feelings, he'll realize that his calf feels better than he thought
13:54and he'll be out there.
13:55He should be out there.
13:56I get that.
13:57But see, to me, this is the way I look at this.
14:00I know that a lot of us, when we're watching football or talking about football, we do sort
14:07of fall into the idea that it's a reality show and whether Americans want to agree with
14:12this or not, we all love drama.
14:14TNT has built its entire network around it, right?
14:17We know drama.
14:18And so we love it.
14:20And we look at a situation like this and we all have opinions and take sides.
14:26And the next thing we do is, you don't want to know what I would do in that situation?
14:31And the old, grizzled parent comes out in all of us.
14:36I'd tell Juwan, you better get over it.
14:39You better get over your feelings.
14:41We got all the leverage.
14:42You better get out there and you better play football.
14:44And guess what?
14:46You're right.
14:47The Niners can do that.
14:49But it's going to lead to bad stuff.
14:53It's not going to work.
14:54So that's why I suddenly feel a ton of urgency.
14:57Which is to say that we can play the dramatic angle if you want.
15:02I'll tell you what I would do.
15:04You have to figure out with your employees, I believe, a way to sort of at least meet them
15:11halfway.
15:12Keep them happy.
15:13It doesn't mean you just kowtow.
15:15It doesn't mean you do everything they want.
15:17They also need to understand your business model and understand that he just signed a
15:23contract.
15:23Yes, all of that factors in.
15:26But I don't, I'm just not a believer that employees with some sort of a gripe, I don't
15:33believe they should just be flicked because you can.
15:37I don't think that he's being flicked.
15:39He feels that way.
15:40Well, and he's allowed to feel however he wants to feel.
15:43And if I'm the employer in this case, I'm feeling like disrespected after just last
15:51May, end of May, end of May, he comes to you and says, or you go to him and you figure
15:57it out and you get a one-year extension and you give him a whole bunch of money, signing
16:01bonus and upfront money and that's it.
16:04You know, we signed you.
16:05And then now a year later, you have a great year and now you want to do this again.
16:08Yeah, that's football.
16:09Yeah, it's football, but it's also their ability to just, quote, flick him away and
16:15they've got other players who can play football.
16:17So if he doesn't want to, yeah, we'll see.
16:20Who are the other receivers right now who can play football?
16:23Ricky Pearsall.
16:24I mean, you think that he's going to be one of the best receivers in football this year?
16:28I don't know about that, but yeah.
16:29Well, you think he's going to have a monster year?
16:30I think he's going to have a...
16:30Over a thousand yards, you said.
16:32So, you know, you've got other guys who can play receiver and you've got a quarterback who's
16:37going to be making $52 million a year next year.
16:39You've got the best play caller in football.
16:41So all these things build up to where, you know, Jawan, maybe you're not as important
16:46to us as you think that you are to yourself.
16:49So we'll find out.
16:50We will find out.
16:51Yeah, we'll find out.
16:52You know, you come back to the team 15 months later and you want another reworked contract
16:57because you had a good year.
16:59That, to me, as an employer, would be annoying.
17:014-0-8 on the Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line.
17:07Willard, such a bad take.
17:08The sport is already bad and if you're frustrated, you'll not be motivated to put in any effort.
17:14Let me tell you actually why your take is bad.
17:16This is going back to the comment I made that, like, you can play football angry.
17:21If you're mad at your team, how will Jawan go out there and play?
17:25You're wrong if you think that he won't put in any effort.
17:28Like, you literally can't even do that in a football game.
17:31You can't not put in effort.
17:32You'll get bulldozed.
17:34You'll get absolutely crushed.
17:36But furthermore, if Jawan does have to go tail between legs, I think he'd actually be extra motivated.
17:43But it's not the motivation you want.
17:46He'll be motivated to play because he's going to be a free agent at the end of the year.
17:49He's going to want to put up numbers.
17:51He's going to want to play really, really well.
17:53He's going to want to show the Niners how wrong they were.
17:56And then he's going to want to get a big contract somewhere else.
17:59That's what he'll be motivated to do.
18:00So there's no question in my mind about motivation.
18:04But what's the motivation?
18:06Motivated to do what?
18:07Are you motivated to play well so you can get the hell out?
18:10Or are you motivated to win football games and have a common goal with a team?
18:17And are you healthy enough to do it after not having any camp?
18:21I mean, all roads lead to what?
18:23This is the concern with Jonathan Kaminga.
18:26If he's on the Warriors this year, what's his motivation?
18:29Is the motivation to win games and have a common goal with your team?
18:33Or is the motivation to ha-ha so you can get a contract somewhere else in a year and a half?
18:38A little different with the receiver.
18:39It's a little different.
18:40You are reliant on the play call and the play and the pass being thrown.
18:45And then you can go out there and get the ha-ha.
18:47If you're Kaminga, you can have the ball in your hands and you can just decide, I'm going to do Kaminga things.
18:52If you're on the floor.
18:53Right.
18:54And that's the same thing with Juwan Jennings.
18:56Because if Juwan is not blocking as hard as he used to block because he's in his feelings or if he's having a couple of drops because he didn't go to camp, well, those things can be fragile.
19:08Playing time can be taken away from a number of different athletes in different situations.
19:13510 just texted in Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line.
19:16Is this constant stream of drama unique to the 49ers?
19:20No.
19:21It's not.
19:21A lot of teams, yeah.
19:23Yeah, it feels that way.
19:25But again, I can't remember the last time the Bengals didn't have a weird offseason.
19:31If you think this is dramatic, you should go read about the Dallas Cowboys right now and how awful that situation has gotten to the point where Jerry Jones and Micah Parsons spent the entire preseason game over the weekend laying down on the trainer's table on the sideline,
19:51just basically trolling his team.
19:54And this came 24 hours after Jerry Jones went public on Michael Irvin's podcast and said, I had a deal with Micah, agreed to, verbally.
20:05I called his agent to get the whole thing written up and his agent told me to go bleep myself.
20:11This is what's, that's public.
20:13So, I'd actually still, in this moment, this take's going to go away soon, but in this moment, I think the 49ers and Juwan have done a really good job of actually making this look like it's not dramatic at all.
20:28I think the jig is up.
20:30Well, I think the jig is up and now we're out of time, but this.
20:33Also, it's not a high profile thing.
20:36No, no, it's not Micah Parsons.
20:37I mean, this is not Henderson or Parsons, you know, or even Terry McLaurin.
20:40But it's a big deal to us.
20:41It's a big deal to the team.
20:42It's a thousand-yard receiver almost.
20:44Right, and it's a situation where maybe it'll get resolved, maybe it won't, but I don't think that it has a ripple effect across the league.
20:52Maybe fantasy drafts, when you get to the ninth or tenth round, you're wondering if I should actually take Juwan Jennings or not, if he's going to play football or not.
21:00They always play.
21:01You know how rare it is for them to, you know, who was the...
21:05Trent Williams did it.
21:06He sat out a whole year.
21:07Right, and Trent is the exception because, A, he's just, he is the big dog, and, B, it's different when you've made bajillions of dollars.
21:17If you've already made big contracts, it's different.
21:20It's different.
21:21You may get to a spot where you're that angry and you're just like, I don't care.
21:26I don't care.
21:27I'll make my millions back on the back end.
21:30But it's very rare that guys actually miss games, and then I think it's even more rare when they do miss games where it goes well for them.
21:42You know, Le'Veon Bell or, I mean, the examples we've had through the years of people who are like, all right, I'm not playing.
21:49Well, you know what?
21:50It's much more likely that you're never going to play well again than it is that this is going to suddenly turn into a financial windfall for you.
21:58So, I'm with Kyle.
22:01Like, Juwan's going to play.
22:03He's going to play next week.
22:05But what do we got?
22:06What kind of Juwan?
22:07What's the health?
22:08What's the ramp up?
22:09What's the...
22:11What's all the things?
22:12You miss camp.
22:13So, that, to me, is the question.
22:16I don't see Juwan Jennings sitting out until week four.
22:20Like, no way he's missing game checks.
22:22Probably not.
22:23I mean, if he goes on IR, then he still gets paid.
22:27So, that would be one way that the team and he, you know, if he comes back and practices, maybe he feels a little tweak in the calf and he winds up on IR.
22:36You don't know, but he has those incentives that he's going to want to hit.
22:40And, you know, 50% snap count for a million and a half, that's enough of a motivation to get you out there to have you playing football.
