00:00What is winning out inside you?
00:02The excitement of 3-0 or the bummer of Nick Bosa's out for the year with a torn ACL?
00:09How about we go out to Jonathan in the city?
00:13Hi, Jonathan. Thanks for the call.
00:16Hey, the sweet emotion because of the winning.
00:213-0, first place in the division.
00:25What a start.
00:26I especially love the way they're winning.
00:28I mean, Kyle Shanahan is doing a massive full job of using the air yardage right now,
00:36especially with what you guys are doing, what we all saw, that very gutsy.
00:40Fourth down, played down the sideline.
00:42That was beautiful, guys.
00:44And also, I want to say, hey, what a super gutsy performance by Mac Jones.
00:50He got kind of injured there.
00:52Hopefully it's not too serious like Nick's.
00:55Because they're just falling like flies again, man.
00:58I don't know what it is.
00:59It's probably the water in Santa Clara.
01:01But, hey, it's also, I want to say, thank God that the special teams is special again, man.
01:08Eddie kicked a game-winning field goal.
01:12I thought we were really going to get undone by the safety.
01:16Thank God the office was able to engineer a drive to get that field goal as time expires.
01:26And, hey, Nick's injured, but it's like a blessing in disguise.
01:30Now we get to see more of the young guys that they picked up to the draft.
01:34And, hey, let's just keep this going.
01:36Go Niners.
01:37Jonathan, thanks.
01:38I wouldn't call it a blessing in disguise.
01:40I do love the positivity.
01:42I do want to point something else out, though, for special teams.
01:44I know that we see field goals go through the upright.
01:47We get excited, and we think special teams are all set.
01:50The safety is on the special teams.
01:52And you've got to keep little things like this in mind.
01:55Here's what I mean by that.
01:57There used to be a rule.
01:58I see it get broken now all the time.
02:01And I know Sky Moore is new to the Niners.
02:02I don't know to what level this conversation has happened.
02:05And I don't know if the 49ers even agree with me.
02:08But the deal used to be, if you're a punt returner, and you're standing on the 10, and the ball is over your head, let it go.
02:18Because there's a very high chance it's going to go into the end zone.
02:22Did you see what happened on the next Cardinal punt?
02:26Sky Moore.
02:27Fair catch.
02:27No.
02:28He let it go over his head.
02:30And it went into the end zone.
02:31So the Niners started at the 20, and they ended up with a game-winning field goal.
02:34Instead, the prior time, he does a fair catch all the way back at the 5.
02:40That's a losing play.
02:43What are you really gaining there?
02:45Are you stopping the chances of it being at the 4 or the 3?
02:48You're already at the 5.
02:50There's no point in catching the ball there in a fair catch situation.
02:55You are much better off letting the ball go, see if it goes into the end zone.
03:00If it doesn't, maybe you're at the 3.
03:02Maybe you're at the 2.
03:02Whatever.
03:03You're already at the 5.
03:04You're already kind of buried back there.
03:06Do not catch the ball back there, especially with an immobile quarterback who is dinged like that set Mac Jones and the offensive lineup for a lack of success, and then it's exactly what happened.
03:20So, obviously, Pune shares some responsibility.
03:23I'm not saying otherwise, but the special team, those are little things that are still happening that I would love to see be cleaner.
03:32Special teams, though, getting better.
03:33You can't deny that it's getting better.
03:36And the second punt that you're referring to, that was a no-brainer.
03:40That thing was already in a balance at the 2 or the 1.
03:43The other one, he's backing up from the 10.
03:46And, yeah, you need to know where you start at the 10.
03:49And if you're backing up, you should probably let that one go.
03:51And that turned out to be a bad play.
03:54And, you know, you're at the 6, though.
03:55That doesn't automatically mean that it's going to be a safety.
03:57No, of course not.
03:58And so I look more at Dominic Pune on that.
04:01And, you know, the Niners' offensive line had three holds in the second half.
04:04And that is an issue that's going to be there.
04:07And, you know, you look at – actually, it wasn't all the offensive line.
04:11Tonjes had a hold.
04:12Yep.
04:12And Pune had a hold.
04:14And that one in the end zone, that was an easy call.
04:17That was a no-brainer.
04:18Well, it was an easy call except for this – here's my question about the two –
04:21the safety and then the almost safety with Kyler Murray.
04:24It feels like we're getting into a real fuzzy picture here
04:28where Kyler's got 86% of his body's in the end zone.
04:33But it's not a safety because little pieces of his –
04:35The ball.
04:36It's the ball.
04:37Well, the ball, partially in the end zone, then out of the end zone.
04:40It has to be all of him and all the ball.
04:42But then I would say why not the same for Dominic Pune's hold,
04:45which clearly started at the two-yard line.
04:48Clearly started at the two-yard line.
04:49So, like, to me it's just – I'm not saying it wasn't a hold.
04:53It was.
04:53But the letter of the law tells me that if anything and any part of your body
04:58is out of the end zone, then that's what plays.
05:02And Pune's hold, like, yeah, he got dragged into the end zone holding the guy.
05:07Right.
05:07So when did the hold start?
05:08To me it started at the two-yard line.
05:11Yeah, I don't know if it started that early.
05:13And, you know, obviously the ref didn't see it or didn't call it
05:15until it got in the end zone.
05:16And so, yeah, it's a little bit of a gray area.
05:18But for me it's partly Sky Moore, yes.
05:21And I do think that the special teams was, by and large, much better.
05:25You had a kickoff where I think it was Garendo caught it in the end zone
05:29and he just took a knee.
05:31And so lesson learned.
05:32Yeah, exactly.
05:34Touchback.
05:34Here we go out to the 35.
05:36So I do think they're making progress.
05:38They gave up one big kick return.
05:41But other than that, they were much, much better.
05:44This is going to sound mean, but here's another reason for Garendo to take a knee
05:48if he catches it in the end zone.
05:50He doesn't appear to be very good at returning kicks.
05:52No.
05:53He's not very good at it.
05:55Dude, when you do catch it at the two, you get knocked down by the first guy.
05:59You pick the wrong spot to run every time.
06:03I don't even know if he ever gets out to the 30,
06:05which is just kind of like the baseline now.
06:07I got him with a 20-yard return in the fourth quarter to the 28.
06:11He caught it.
06:12That was a low-line drive.
06:13He got 20 yards to the 28.
06:16But otherwise it was, yeah, Sky Moore had a 30-yarder.
06:20And beyond that, there weren't that many big explosives.
06:24No.
06:24It does not look right.
06:26Isaac Garendo is arrowed down for me right now.
06:30You know what I mean?
06:31I think there's the injury thing that keeps happening with him.
06:35Not very good at returning kicks.
06:36I think the 49ers got Brian Robinson for a reason.
06:39I don't think they love him as a backup running back.
06:43And they got to see him, obviously, in a situation that was low leverage late last year.
06:49And, you know, he had some moments.
06:51It's the moments that were nice.
06:52He broke some runs here or there.
06:53But I don't love Isaac Garendo's vision, I think is what I'm trying to say.
06:59Yeah.
07:00And so, I mean, you've got Sky Moore, who's got questionable hands and questionable judgment.
07:04So what are you going to do with kick returns?
07:07Better returner, though.
07:08Like he's been, you know, I don't love that he caught that ball that I was just talking about.
07:12But his returns have been much better than Isaac Garendo's.
07:17Yep, I got him here for a 30-yarder after Arizona got that field goal in the second half.
07:23He got a 30-yarder out to the 36.
07:25Yeah.
07:25The one where he broke a tackle and, you know, got a little bit of a positive impact on that play.
07:29But special teams, for me, last year were a flat F across the board.
07:34Totally.
07:35And so now, I mean, yesterday was probably their best game.
07:37Better than a C.
07:38But overall, it's still kind of middle of the road.
07:41But improving.
07:42Can you imagine if that was Jake Moody that went out there?
07:47For the game winner?
07:48Yeah.
07:49Oh, I mean, people would be like.
07:50Would you have left the TV on?
07:51Nauseous, yeah.
07:52I mean.
07:53I'm going for a walk.
07:54Tell me later.
07:56Tell me later if it went in or not.
07:57And when you watch his kicks, Eddie Pinero, they come off the foot and they are.
08:02Right.
08:02Dead straight.
08:03Down Broadway.
08:05Even if they're not.
08:06Actually.
08:06Even if they're not right down the middle.
08:08His first one was a little dicey.
08:09Right, but they're not going like left to right or right to left.
08:12They are straight.
08:13They're straight.
08:13Whether or not it's like a little bit of a block or a little bit of a pull, it's dead
08:16straight off the foot.
08:18Let's go to Matt in San Jose.
08:19888-957-9570.
08:21What's hitting you today?
08:22What's winning inside your emotions?
08:24Is it the high of the wins or the low of Bosa?
08:27Hey, Matt, what's up?
08:30You know what?
08:31What wins more so is the 3-0 start.
08:34And I'm going to, I guess, use the Schedule Sam conversation we had last week.
08:38We're talking about, you know, it's just the Saints.
08:41If the Schedule's, they're playing the Jaguars.
08:44Like, are they good enough to beat the Jaguars without Nick Bosa?
08:46Well, yeah, sure.
08:47I mean, are they good enough to beat the Rams?
08:49Maybe.
08:50Maybe.
08:51We'll see.
08:51Like, they have enough time to get the offense healthy, get players back, get the reinforcements,
08:57and still keep pushing this thing forward as Salah figures out how to work with these guys without Bosa.
09:04Maybe they do make a trade.
09:06They have so much time to figure it out.
09:08What if they develop into a championship defense over the course of the season?
09:12And Robert Salah's doing the thing, and they're high-fiving and jumping on the sidelines and stuff.
09:16And here's Brock Purdy.
09:20He's healthy.
09:21He's got Ayuk back.
09:23He's got Jennings back.
09:24Ricky Pearsall is Ricky Pearsall.
09:26I mean, good God.
09:27This guy, he looks like he could be a pro bowler.
09:29Baller.
09:30Baller.
09:31They have the pieces that could make a really, really good team,
09:35and the schedule doesn't really give them too many challenges.
09:39Matt, I agree with you, and even more so because, and thanks, Matt,
09:44I don't love looking at schedules six, seven, eight weeks down the road
09:48and assuming we know what that's going to look like because, you know,
09:52two weeks ago you would have won, hey, Vikings-Bengals.
09:55That's an interesting game.
09:56And then it ended up being Carson Wentz against Jake Browning.
09:59Right.
09:59I have no idea what this is all going to look like in November.
10:03But what you're buying yourself right now is wiggle room.
10:06Like, the Niners probably will have some sort of a valley at some point this year.
10:12Why?
10:13I don't know.
10:14You know, like you have to go to Indianapolis.
10:16That was going to be easy.
10:17Now it looks like it's going to be hard.
10:19There might be some weird games.
10:21There might be other injuries.
10:22But you've bought yourself a lot with a 3-0 start
10:27and two of them being within the division.
10:29You have bought yourself a lot.
10:31You have more division wins this year than you had last year.
10:34Exactly.
10:35That's incredible.
10:36It's incredible.
10:37I have a hard time believing that this 3-0 start is not going to sort of come into our collective consciousness later on
10:46and go, but it's a good thing you won those games.
10:48For sure.
10:48Especially when you didn't have Brock Purdy.
10:50So, Mack Jones, who again was good enough and he wasn't necessarily great and you got in the fourth quarter
10:56and he threw a bad interception and you thought, oh God, okay, that pick, that pick's going to cost you the game.
11:02And the defense stood up and then you got the ball back and you gave up a safety
11:06and that was not on Mack Jones, but you fell behind again and then you had to give the ball back
11:11and the defense stood up again and then Mack Jones, okay, go down there and drive us down here
11:16and get us into a spot where you can win the game and he did.
11:19So, you went 2-0 with Mack Jones and you probably should have Brock Purdy back this week, I would guess.
11:27I would put it at very probable.
11:29Seems like it, yeah.
11:30It seems like if you have Brock back and so if Mack comes in and he goes 2-0,
11:35if Mack Jones goes 2-0 as your backup, including one divisional win and one road win,
11:41what are we even talking about?
11:42That's found money right there.
11:44No, completely.
11:44That's actually a great phrase for what I think the Niner season has been so far.
11:49It's found money.
11:50Two of these three on the road.
11:51Two of these three are in the division.
11:54Other players are dropping passes constantly, seemingly, that could put the game away.
11:59And they're just not doing it.
12:01So, things have gone their way, even in the face of all the injury luck not going their way.
12:06Mike in Santa Clara is next.
12:08Hi, Mike.
12:08Thanks for the call.
12:11Thanks, guys.
12:12Thanks for taking my call.
12:13Man, so many mixed emotions.
12:16I don't even know where to begin.
12:20I'm happy with the win, but obviously the Bosa injury is huge.
12:25I think that they do make a move to get an edge rusher just to, you know, just basically back him up at this point.
12:35The other thing that worries me is this offensive line.
12:41I do worry, especially with Mac Jones, especially if, you know, if Brock Purdy is not going to be back.
12:50We don't know that for sure yet.
12:52But if Mac is going to be hobbled, as he is already, you know, where is that going to be?
12:56The special teams, you know, it looks a lot better than it used to be.
13:01And I'm not just talking kicker.
13:02I'm just talking in general.
13:04Yeah, there were some mishaps on that.
13:06But, you know, again, guys, I'm just all over the place on this.
13:10I'm just curious what you guys think about where, like, where the Niners go at this point.
13:16I think they do need a new edge rusher to back up the Nick Bosa injury.
13:21But, man, I'm still a little nervous about what the hell is going to happen moving forward.
13:28So that's all I wanted to kind of get across.
13:30Mike, I get it.
13:32Like, I get it.
13:33I think you speak for many people where it's like it's really hard to define whether this is a good day or a bad day.
13:40It's a lot of both.
13:42All I can do is kind of share what I try to do in these situations.
13:46And I have found, admittedly, this is one of the hardest things to do in life.
13:51But how to think about what the Niners should do or where they are, it's Monday.
13:57It's Monday, September 22nd.
14:00Yep.
14:00So let's do Monday, September 22nd.
14:04In a football sense, because there's no game for six days, I would say, what do they do?
14:09You go play Jacksonville.
14:12That's what you do.
14:13Don't even worry about the Rams in a week and a half yet.
14:17Like, no.
14:17No, I would not make a call and overpay for a star defensive lineman today.
14:25I would not do that.
14:26It's like, don't.
14:27That's blinking.
14:28Like, you're 3-0.
14:30Be 3-0.
14:31And go face the team you're favored to beat again this weekend in the Jacksonville Jaguars.
14:37Hopefully, with your starting quarterback, back on the field.
14:40And hopefully, that's a healthier outcome in terms of the players and all of those things this weekend.
14:47I think the time will come as to, A, do the Niners need to pick up someone else?
14:53B, is someone else available?
14:56C, does their record at the time call for that?
15:00And I think that the answer to all three of those things is probably yes.
15:04But that's why I'm stoked.
15:06They're 3-0, and it's Monday, September 22nd, and the Jaguars are on a plane this weekend.
15:13And I like the Niners' chance to beat them, too.
15:15You've got six more games until the deadline.
15:18And the deadline's on the 4th of November, and you've got the Giants two days before that.
15:22And you go to New York at that point.
15:24And so, in six games, Cincinnati might be in sell mode.
15:29The Giants probably will be.
15:30Who knows who else is going to be looking to move off of pieces that you may want to acquire.
15:35And you may find out that Mikel Williams is actually really, really good on the outside.
15:41And he's played inside.
15:42He's played outside.
15:43He's kind of moved around a little bit.
15:44But you're going to find out what you actually have on your team.
15:48If you can have Mikel Williams go out there and be more of a defensive end.
15:53And C.J. West, and Alfred Collins, and all the rest of the guys in the interior who've been so good.
15:59And Sam Okawonu, who's been good.
16:01And Yator Gros Matos.
16:03You've got a really deep defensive line.
16:05You may not miss Nick Bosa as much as we all think that you do right now.
16:09Now, I know he's a star.
16:11And he is your best defensive player in the front.
16:14I think Fred Warner's your best defensive player overall.
16:16But you may find that you can make do with what you have and still be a good defense.
16:22Maybe.
16:23Yeah.
16:23I don't think by any stretch the defense has now totally got their pants around their ankles.
16:28I just know that the presence of Nick Bosa makes everybody else a better player.
16:32He is one of those players.
16:33And that's my concern today.
16:35It's not even just about the Bosa production in and of itself in a vacuum.
16:39It's about the fact that his presence means that you've got more one-on-one time for the other pass rushers.
16:47You have in coverage those guys need to be good for a second less than they will need to be now.
16:53It doesn't mean they can't do it, but it is going to be harder.
16:57It's going to be harder for all of those other players.
17:00And many of them are going to have to grow up fast.
17:03Let's go to another Jonathan in Alaska.
17:05Hi, Jonathan.
17:06Thanks for calling Willard and Dibbs.
17:07Hey, I actually got a couple thoughts.
17:12I'm actually down the middle on the whole thing here.
17:15So, super thrilled with the win.
17:17I mean, that's the kind of game we would have lost last year.
17:20So, they came through and they had to.
17:23This Nick thing, it's just a bummer because the rookies are looking really good.
17:28The team, they're getting better game by game.
17:30But Nick is one of the leaders.
17:33And with him out now, I think we can still be a playoff team.
17:37But with him out, I think our ceiling is significantly lower.
17:41Like, because we can get there.
17:43But he's the kind of guy who can just wreck a game, a playoff game, make one play.
17:48He can swing a game.
17:50And I don't know.
17:51It's not quite the same example because the Lions had a lot of other injuries last year.
17:56But, you know, they lost Aiden Hutchinson last year.
17:59And they had a great year but got to the playoff.
18:02They couldn't stop anybody.
18:03So, just, I think it lowers our ceiling.
18:06And that's what bums me out about it.
18:08No, there's no question.
18:10That's a good way to put it, too.
18:11It is.
18:11At the same time, though, again, the way I'm going to choose to look at this is to say to lower the ceiling,
18:17you're already flashing forward to December and January.
18:20And I don't know who's on the team yet.
18:23So, that can change.
18:26That absolutely can change.
18:28And I also don't know how many of you were looking at the 49ers as a true Super Bowl contender even with Nick.
18:36Is that how you were thinking about this?
18:37No, of course not.
18:38So, you know, depends on what perspective you started with, I guess.
18:44Yeah, and I started with the perspective of they couldn't win the division.
18:48They can be a team that wins a game, and then you get down to the final four teams in your conference,
18:54and you're going to have a hard time.
18:55Green Bay, wow, even though yesterday was, you know, a little bit sideways and Jordan Love, bad game.
19:03Is it a trend?
19:04We don't really know.
19:05They have a good defense.
19:05Philadelphia is a really good team, and, you know, they found a way to beat the Rams,
19:10who I think the Rams are also a really good team.
19:13Tampa Bay is interesting without Mike Evans, and we don't know how long he'll be out,
19:16if it's four weeks or longer with the hamstring.
19:19That sure looked like a classic grade two, like kind of a George Kittle,
19:24where he might be out for longer, but Tampa's a team I think that is dangerous.
19:28So even if you get to that divisional round in the playoffs, you're going to face a really good team.
19:33And if you beat that team, you'll face an even better team.
19:36And if you win that game, you'll face a team in the AFC who is unlike any team you'll face all year.
19:42The only bad news in looking at the framework of the NFC is that the Niners play in what is,
19:47and we told you this before, is a very high-floor division.
19:51I don't know if it's great at the top, but, boy, it's great at the bottom.
19:55The Niners are in first place by themselves.
19:57They're also a game out of last place.
19:59Like, everybody's got a winning record, and that by far and away is the only division
20:02that can say something like that.
