00:31We added a piece today and, you know, in MVS, Marquez Valdez-Scanling,
00:37and thrilled to have him part of it.

00:41Are you involved in any other wide receivers?
00:45You know, we're always trying to improve our roster.
00:48You guys have mentioned his MRI in the past.
00:51Do you guys see progress with that, with the imaging that's been taken on the calf?
00:56Yeah, you don't image a guy like daily, you know.
00:59So that's something that happened a little bit ago.
01:02And, you know, if it doesn't get better soon, I'm sure we'll be doing more of that.
01:07Is it worse than you originally had thought it was going to be?
01:10Yeah, but I also, you know, calves can take a long time.
01:15That's one thing with that injury.
01:17Played with guys who they can take a while.
01:20John, I'm sure you may be aware that there's been some conjecture that there's more than just a calf going on,
01:27given his desire for your contract and everything.
01:30Are you convinced when he is healthy that he will be ready to play?
01:35Well, there's a lot that goes into that, Eric.
01:37You know, ideally, everybody has a training camp.
01:40Everyone's out there.
01:41You know, that's a perfect world.
01:43But, you know, he's been putting in work to the side, and we'll have to make that judgment when the time comes.
01:50You know, the other thing is both things can be true.
01:52You know, he wants a new contract, and he's got our calf.
01:54So I think people want to assume one or the other.

01:58When you make your decisions on the wide receiver position specifically,
02:01do you have to do it assuming you might not have to on for the first few weeks?
02:05I think we make every decision on this roster with so many things in consideration.

02:15Has he asked to be traded?
02:18You know, a while ago he did.
02:20But that was a long time ago, and we've moved on from that.
02:24That was during camp, or was it before?
02:26I'm not getting into when it was, but it was a while ago.
02:30What about Russell Gage?
02:33Is he – any plans to bring him back?
02:37Yeah, yeah.
02:38Gage will be out there today.
02:41Yeah.
02:42On the practice squad?
02:43No, he'll be on the 53.

02:46It's just a couple weeks gone, but there would be definitely movement.
02:48It's fluid given the number of injuries and the positions.
02:52How hard is it to start looking at week one, knowing that there's still moves to be made,
02:58knowing – I mean, there's some positions that look pretty short right now.
03:02As a coach plotting for that, how difficult has that been?
03:05I mean, it's always difficult.
03:08You know, it's difficult in week eight when you have a bunch of guys go down the week before, too.
03:12And you're sitting there, and you don't have those guys on practice squad,
03:15and you're not sure how you're going to put it together.
03:17But you find a way to figure it out, and you show up the next Sunday.
03:19So, you know, at week one, it can be a little bit different.
03:24But these are times that you go through always as a coach at some time in the year.
03:27I'm glad that we have gotten a lot of our entry guys back, some joining in on practice on Monday.
03:32We'll have more out there today.
03:34So hopefully we'll keep having better luck with that.
03:35And this is a team that's had great chemistry, obviously,
03:39but it's also had some contractual issues in the past.
03:42What does it tell you that Juwan did ask to be traded,
03:45and does that change the way you think about him
03:49or the way he exists on this organization?
03:53No, that doesn't faze me at all.
03:55I don't think it has anything to do with team chemistry.
03:57That only has anything to do with how we approach each other,
04:00how we spend our time with each other.
04:02It has to do with business decisions,
04:05and those are the business decisions people make.
04:09But I don't look at any of that stuff.
04:11I mean, you get a tweet of that while you're on a vacation,
04:13and I don't get the tweets,
04:15but when people copy a tweet and send it to me,
04:17that's about all I get, and I usually move on with my life.
04:20John, when you said he did ask for a trade a while back,
04:23has that trade request been rescinded?
04:26No, he asked for it, and we've moved on.
04:30We're not doing that, so we're moving forward.
04:33What is his contract?
04:35One of the contract sites says that he has incentives
04:38baked into that contract that he signed.
04:40Does he have performance-based incentives?
04:43I think that report, somebody put that in front.
04:45That was from last year,
04:46so those are things that he's already earned from last year.
04:49Yeah.
04:50So your offense is pretty consistently over the years, right?
04:53He's going to be tough for the league and yards after the catch.
04:57From your view, to what extent is that a credit to the scheme
05:01versus the individual ability of anyone, receiver, and player?
05:05I mean, I think it always goes to players.
05:09I mean, you can always get more yards after the catch if you're really open.
05:12You know, but you need good players to get really open.
05:16And sometimes you're not really open, and you have the right player
05:18who's only a normal guy would get two yards after the catch,
05:20but we've got a different guy who gets four yards after the catch,
05:23so that stuff adds up.
05:24So I always give that credit to the players.
05:27There's a nickname for Debo.
05:30You can kill the Yak bros.
05:33Debo's not here anymore,
05:34and he won't be ready to go for the third part of the season.
05:38How would you assess Ricky Pearsall's chances
05:41if they were being accepted as a new member?
05:44I'm struggling to hear him,
05:45but you're saying him getting yards after the catch?
05:47Yeah.
05:48A Yak bro?
05:49How would you assess his chances of being a new member?
05:53I think any time you have really good hands,
05:55that's where it starts with having yards after the catch.
05:59How quickly you can stop the spin of a ball and tuck it away
06:01and get immediately vertical usually has to do with how good your hands are.
06:06And Ricky is very good at that.
06:08Then other stuff goes into breaking tackles and stuff.
06:10Debo was a lead at that because of how big he was
06:12and how powerful he was.
06:15And then some guys get yards after the catch
06:16because they can run away from everybody.
06:19But usually the guys who are yards after the catch,
06:21the guys who don't mess around, catch it clean, get right up the field.
06:24And that to me always starts with your hands
06:26and leads to the mindset of how you play football.
06:28Are things trending so that you think you'll have Poonie and Arch week one?
06:33We're optimistic about it.
06:35We're hoping so.
06:36I mean, I guess I would say that it would be trending in the right direction,
06:40but we won't know that until next week.
06:42And we got Barch back out on Monday's practice,
06:45so we're on course for that
06:47and hoping to get Poonie out sometime next week,
06:49if not Monday, hopefully Wednesday.
06:52But he's doing good in his rehab,
06:53and it's looking positive so far.
06:54You guys activated Yeter yesterday from Republic.
06:58Where is he?
06:58Is he possible for week one, or is that going to be?
07:00Yeah, he's possible for week one.
07:01We expect him to get out and start practicing here next week.
07:05But we've been working him out like he's going to play week one.
07:10He's been handling that well,
07:11and hopefully that will continue and he'll be out there on Sunday.
07:13You guys did that overhaul of that defensive front.
07:16It was a big emphasis all offseason.
07:18So now that you're about on the cusp of the season,
07:20how does that unit look?
07:22You guys stocked up on him at the 53-man roster.
07:24I'm sure there's changes now too.
07:26But how has it come along?
07:28There's a lot of change to it, but we like the group.
07:30And I think they've all gotten better throughout camp.
07:33I mean, Bosa's Bosa.
07:34He's going to be Bosa.
07:36You know, Mikel started off really good, had a great offseason,
07:39then got nicked in training camps, as did C.J. West.
07:44But they've both done a nice job.
07:46Alfred Collins were really happy and proud of the efforts he's put forth,
07:50and I think he's improving as he's getting his legs underneath him.
07:55Sam O making great contributions.
07:57Kyle just talked about Yeter.
08:00Bryce Huff really has shown his value to us.
08:04So I think when you throw it all together, Beal in that group as well.
08:08So as you throw that whole group together, there's a lot to like.
08:11We did claim a guy from Jacksonville, Jordan Jefferson, today,
08:18and felt like an opportunity to upgrade our group,
08:21a guy we've liked way back to his college days in LSU,
08:25and add something to our group, and we wanted to take a look at that.
08:28So, you know, when you put the whole group together, I think we like it,
08:32and there's versatility, guys who can move inside, rush inside,
08:36and be a fun group to work with.

08:49Well, it's certainly nice to, you know, when you can see the film.
08:52We can all see the film.
08:54You go back to draft process.
08:55But how's he been since he's been a pro, and it's nice to have Ethan's, you know,
08:59we respect Ethan's opinion.
09:01He's earned that around here.
09:03And so it is nice to have that resource.
09:06You mentioned you're not going to trade Juwan Jennings.
09:07How hard was the decision on Sebastian Valdez,
09:13and kind of what went into that decision to kind of go forward the way you did?
09:17Does he mean him not making the 53?
09:21Just numbers.
09:22I mean, we had sometimes we go with four guys inside.
09:25Sometimes we go with five.
09:27We usually go nine as a group.
09:29We went 10.
09:30We ended up finding a, I think we went 11, actually.
09:33Finding out we could get one from another roster,
09:37and we're glad that he's still here on our practice squad.
09:41So you always take a risk of losing those guys.
09:43But there's no difference to me between our 53 and the 16 guys on practice squad.
09:49I know for those guys there's a difference because it's a different paycheck,
09:51which I fully understand.
09:54But Sebastian's part of our team, and I'm glad that we don't lose him.
09:58And I plan on him continuing throughout the year,
10:00and there's probably going to come a time this year where we need him.
10:03You mentioned you're not going to trade Juwan.
10:04Are you negotiating with him or waiting for him to come back soon?
10:07We keep those things behind.
10:09We have throughout the offseason, and we'll leave it at that.
10:13You mentioned bringing Russell Gates back.
10:15Any other moves of guys who will be out into the 50s?
10:17Just some practice squad stuff that's gone on, continuing to add to that.
10:22We'll put that out as soon as that's final, but just that right now.
10:27Do you plan to have a quarterback on the practice squad?
10:29Yes, we do.
10:30We do.
10:31What's the plan with Curtis Rourke this season?
10:35Is it going to be a red shirt for him?
10:37He gets three weeks to decide when he comes back.
10:40So we'll decide on that and how those three weeks go.
10:43And I don't expect it any time real soon, but I think what I said last time,
10:47around week six or something.
10:49So sometime in that area.
10:50So when that happens, we'll have three weeks to decide.
10:52And it's always tough when a guy doesn't get any offseason to throw him into three weeks of Carter practices
10:58and stuff to make a decision.
10:59But I'll tell you, he's worked as hard as anyone can in the position he's in.
11:03Just what we see him out there doing alone in the morning, how attentive he is in the meetings and stuff.
11:08So he'll give himself a chance in those three weeks.
11:10And if not, he'll get a red shirt here.
11:12John, how do you think Jake Moody did as a quarterback here to the practice squad?
11:16It's not official.
11:18Yeah, he's still en route.
11:20But Adrian Martinez is his name.
11:22Was with the Jets.
11:24And he's en route.
11:26Yeah.
11:27How do you think Jake Moody did this preseason?
11:29Well, I think it was an excellent competition between him and Joseph.
11:34You know, I think Kyle spoke to we didn't want that competition to end.
11:38But anyone who says it wasn't a competition, I don't really agree.
11:42I think, you know, the coaches, the special teams coaches are always charting everything.
11:46So you see what you see in front of everyone, and then they're doing things to the side.
11:50And Jake had a really good, you know, preseason.
11:53And, you know, I found it interesting after, you know, having a hell of a game in Las Vegas that, you know, a lot of people still have questions.
12:03And I guess that when you had a season like you did last year, those things are going to be there until you put those, you kind of put that away.
12:11And, you know, we got a lot of belief in him and understand that last year was rough.
12:15But that happens in guys' careers.
12:18And, you know, our confidence and belief in him is what we see out here.
12:23But, you know, I will say everything's earned in this league, and everyone's got to go prove it each and every game, each and every year.
12:29And so Jake understands that.
12:31You mentioned that guy's up front.
12:33As far as the Marcus Seagull, what's his progress been?
12:35Also, the updates on Upton's stuff.
12:38Upton should get out there today or this afternoon.
12:41So it'll be his first time out of practice here in a little bit.
12:42So excited about that.
12:44And Marquis Seagull's had an awesome camp.
12:46I mean, he got a late start missing OTAs.
12:48I think it was his core surgery, I think.
12:51But he's been great.
12:53You guys have seen him in the games.
12:54It's been the same way in practice.
12:55And we'll expect him to help us this year.
12:57You guys had 17 guys with offensive linemen, defensive linemen.
13:01This year it's 21.
13:02Was this just a product of guys that were unhealthy?
13:07We like the groups, you know, really.
13:09And, you know, we like the groups.
13:11And sometimes there's roster mechanics that go on.
13:13Last year I forget exactly what happened, why we went light.
13:16But this is where we thought our best 53 was right now.
13:20You know, as Kyle always tells the guys, it's never a final 53.
13:23I'm sure it will be fluid.
13:24But we like the group of guys.
13:27And, you know, like I said, expect it to move.
13:30It never stays static.
13:32A couple more.
13:33Owner's meetings, when free agency was fresh, kind of indicated that you guys had to take your medicine.
13:39And I don't think you said it was a one-season pause.
13:42But, you know, kind of had that vibe.
13:44But I know you've since said that your feelings have changed.
13:49And, John, if you want to weigh in.
13:51But, like, where do you – like, it doesn't feel like it's quite a Super Bowl or plus.
13:55But, obviously, you still have a lot of great players.
13:58Like, I guess, big picture, where do you think you are?
14:01And, I mean, is it a different feeling than some of the past years?
14:06I mean, I've been feeling the same for a while.
14:08I mean, we can go back to free agency.
14:09I mean, that was – we lost a lot of our team that day.
14:11And we didn't sign a bunch of guys, so there was a lot of uncertainty.
14:15I felt a lot better after the draft when we filled up some of those holes.
14:18When you look at it today, I mean, the draft makes you feel better because you fill up some of those holes.
14:23But you're not going to feel good until you actually see those guys make your team and play.
14:28I think that was the most exciting thing when you look at the 53.
14:31I mean, we lost more D linemen and stuff and defensive players than what we had in one exit.
14:37And sometimes when, as a coach, and you think you're going to make that all up in the draft, I look at that as a little make-believe.
14:44I don't – wherever you draft, first round, second round, seventh round, it's usually 50-50 on that guy.
14:50And then when I look at all the guys we drafted and that they legitimately made our team and we're excited about them,
14:54that's the stuff that makes me feel a lot better.
14:56Where are we at?
14:57I don't know.
14:57It depends on how good we get as this year goes.
15:00We lost some good players, but I think we've filled them with some guys who are capable of becoming those guys
15:04and hopefully be capable of becoming better.
15:07Is that going to happen right away?
15:08No, it never does.
15:10But can it happen this year?
15:11Can it happen by week four?
15:12Can it happen by week eight?
15:13And those are things that we're optimistic about.
15:15You want to have good luck with injuries and everything like that, which can't control all of that.
15:20But I'm excited that we have options in this building.
15:22We have young guys to work with.
15:23And we have a bunch of players who have been successful in this league
15:26who I still believe have a number of good years ahead of them, too.
15:30Kind of following up on that, you look at it two ways.
15:32So you're more inexperienced, particularly depth-wise, but also maybe more upside.
15:36How do you kind of view the variance that you might get with a younger group when you're building up a roster?
15:42Yeah, you know, I think, Nick, 10 of 11 of our draft picks, that's a lot of draft picks.
15:48And 10 of 11 made it, you know.
15:50And an undrafted free agent made it as well.
15:52So there is a lot of youth on this team.
15:54There's a lot of opportunity, you know, with youth.
15:56The expectation, the standard doesn't change.
16:00And, man, they've got great examples of guys who've done it at a high level in this league.
16:05So that's really cool for these guys.
16:08But you don't expect for it to go perfectly.
16:10And hopefully you've worked through a lot of that during the offseason, during training camp.
16:15These guys have played preseason games.
16:17Because of some injuries in camp, a lot of these guys have probably got more reps than they've expected.
16:22Now, in the same tune, some of our rookies were hurt for, you know, a couple weeks during training camp.
16:28So I think a lot of it just remains to be seen, you know.
16:32But we're excited about what this group has infused into our team.
16:37We're excited about the team in general.
16:39Did a lot of talent leave this team last year?
16:41Absolutely.
16:42But that's the league.
16:45And, you know, we made the best of it.
16:47And I like where our team's at.
16:49When you look at the construction of this team, despite the turnover, there's a piece of guy in the room who's a veteran who's been there.
16:56Can you kind of show who has the ropes?
16:59Is that encouraging for you in terms of, like, looking at, okay, like, how the transition can be scored because of that?
17:05Yeah, it's a great mix.
17:06I mean, I remember when I was a rookie having Hardy Nickerson next to me, you know.
17:10Also, to be a young guy and have an established vet who's been really successful, who can help you on the field but help you off the field, too, take you through that, that's what you want in a locker room.
17:22And I think we've got that throughout this locker room.
17:25There's a lot of really impressive people.
17:28And, obviously, their work on the field speaks for itself.
17:31So, tremendous for these rookies to have role models.
17:35And you want to be successful, study successful people.
17:38They're all over this locker room.
17:39So, I think that bodes well for us.
